Good Book, Title Misleading.......2007-10-09

First I want to qualify this review by saying that this was a good book, a book that I enjoyed and learned from, however it wasnt really what the title made it seem that it was, a book on heaven. Sure Mr. Piper explains his experiance in heaven, well at least at the gates of heaven, in the first chapter and it does paint a picture of heaven that I cant wait to experiance, but there are maybe 2 chapters on heaven in this 17 chapter book. The rest of the story is about how Don Piper came back to life from a terrible auto accident and how he was able to find passion again and regain a sense of Gods Purpose in his life, which is a great read, not just what the Title premises.
That being said. I did enjoy the book and the story, it is uplifting and enspiring for anyone who has gone through illness or any tragedy in their life for that matter and I would recommend it to anyone needing new perspective. I just would have titled it "Back from the Dead" or Glimpses of Heaven: One Mans Journey to Heaven, Back Through Hell and on to Purpose" or something of that like.

Truly a disappointment. I should have known better than to purchase this book. How can an entire book be written about a 90 minute experience? However, I did not expect a blow by blow of medical treatments and his healing process.

I found it believable and an amazing description of his experience of seeing heaven's gates,etc., but after that, the long drug-out story of the author's recovery was somewhat tedious.

After the 90 second replay of Heaven, the rest of the book was just reading about his stay in the hospital and his slow recovery. I was disappointed.

This book isn't for everyone. It's a heartfelt tale with many great lessons. Don's experiences demonstrate the most valuable lessons in life:
- trust that God has a purpose for each of us;
- often the best way to help others is to let them help you;
- everything leads to good if we let it;
- often the smallest gestures can have the most impact;
- even the worst experiences have silver linings;
- heaven is real and waiting for us.

Makes You Feel Like A Kid Again.......2007-09-29

Katherine Paterson, with vividly beautiful prose, tells a story about the friendship between a young boy and a young girl, and how that friendship transforms the life of that boy from something dull and normal to something as spectacular as a imaginary fantasy land. The book itself is short and an easy read, but what the book really says to the reader is quite a bit bigger than its page count. Much like growing up, this book is both sweet and painful, and Paterson truly has a great handle on what its like to be a ten year old, fifth grade boy. So for all those readers who aren't afraid of a book that will make them cry (for both sad and warmer reasons) than I recommend this book. It doesn't matter if you're a child or an adult, "Bridge to Terabithia" is universal.

There are some pretty heavy subject matters within this beautiful work of fiction. Yet, they are subjects that need to be dealt with, and what better conversation starter than a response to something you've read together? This is the story of Jess and Leslie, two outcasts of their 5th grade class (although I found both to be interesting). They become neighbors and fast friends, and make up an imaginary kingdom deep in the forest, called Terabithia. There, they have the confidence and control which eludes them in the real world. But an amazing thing happens in that they begin to see the world in a different, more favorable light. They find that people are not who they seem, and this makes them better and more compassionate individuals. The first time I read this, I was absolutely stunned by the tragedy that takes place. Even still, after several times rereading it, it tears at my emotions. I commend Katherine Paterson for bravely venturing into such sensitive matters, ones that will make children better capable of dealing head-on with their own emotions.

What was this book about?.......2007-08-10

I did not understand why this book was written. What was it all about? The only point it seemed to make was Leslie's death at the end of the book. Overall I thought that it was exteremly uneventful. Terabithia seemed to have a small role to play in the book. 'Much ado about nothing' fits this novel.
I cannot, however, ginve this book only one star. Giving it one star would be hating this book. I did not hate it I just thought that it never did get to the point. If it was a memior I would have liked it. As a memior I would have thought it was a good book because I would have expected this. (I wouldn't have picked it up though. Memior isn't quite my style.) I liked the characters and was sad when that girl died. I think that that is why I haven't given it one star.
Not a ringing endorsement, but if memior is what you like I'd give it a shot.

A wonderful tale of friendship and loss.......2007-08-09

This book digs deep into the lives of two children just trying to make it in a world where everyone sees them as outcasts. The slow start to friendship is quite clear and gripping as we see Jesse struggle with his ability to allow a girl, someone that beats him at something he is supposed to be the best at, enter his life and transform his world.

This is a great book about a friendship that goes slowly, and ends too quickly. Wonderful fantasy lies within which will surely make your children want to create their own Terabithia.

This is easily one of the most touching books I've read. Morrie's thoughts are those that I think all should read. The book is concise and is not overpowering in it's enlightenment. If you buy one book this year - buy this one. It will cause you to smile and laugh and cry and might just change your world.

Obviously this book doesn't need another review, but, for what it is worth, I liked it. It is a nice sentimental story, with some good advise and some believable people. Morrie was obviously a likable old man. I don't really agree with his philosophy entirely but my turn on that ride hasn't arrived yet. Maybe I'll change my tune when I get there. You really can't miss with this one.

What a great book. I started to read this and could not put it down. Mitch shares Tuesday afternoons with his dying college professor Morrie. The fact that Morrie and Mitch found each other again is some divine intervention. Morrie shares life stories with Mitch and changes and touches your life. Morrie's strength of character will amaze you, and touch your life forever.

OK, but not helpful for me.......2007-09-13

I bought this book because the table of contents looked good and it had so many 5-star reviews. However, after reading it cover-to-cover I did not find it very helpful for my particular situation. I lost both my parents when a drunk boater hit them (they were in knee deep water and he came ashore at full speed). While this book acknowledges the extra feelings that come from sudden loss, it does not address the complex images left after a violent homicide, and dealing with the drawn-out legal process.

Also, none of the self-help suggestions were appealing or really plausable for me ... I stay home with 3 kids age 3 and under, and I can't go out and shout in a forest or get into aromatherapy.

This book helps you understand what you or a loved one is going through during those first weeks of grief. It was enormously helpful as we suffered through strange physical symptoms and thoughts. We were not crazy. We were grief-stricken. Enormously helpful reference book, without getting into too personal stories at this time of shock.

I bought this book 3 years ago when my mom died suddenly. It was such a big help to me to get through the stages of grief. It explained everything that I was feeling and going through at the time. It was a tremendous comfort to me and had a big healing effect. I have since bought it for a few a my friends who have lost their parents, and they have in turn bought it for others.

Wonderful healing tool for dog lovers who have lost their pet........2007-10-06

This book offers peace as well as humor to those attempting to deal with the loss of their beloved dog. The illustrations are priceless, and the dialogue reminds us that dogs do, after all, go to heaven. I have bought numerous copies for friends in need, and they have all been so grateful!

When my two young friends, boys aged 6 and 10 lost their lifetime friend, Charlie-the beagle, to illnes, I purchased several books to help them formulate their own feelings and perhaps talk about their loss.

I first saw this book mentioned in the AKC magazine as an appropriate title for a bereaved dog owner. I am sure that, for an owner who had lossed a loved canine, this book would be a simple affirmation of the dog's importance. The book would also call up memories of precious times.

It was sweet, but I had expected and hoped for more. We just lost a dog after over 11 1/2 years and were looking for a book to really help the children cope. It was just alright.

Found this book in the veterinary ER waiting room the night we took in our 16 year old dog, and had to put her down. My 8 year old son couldn't stay in the exam room while they did the procedure, but found this book and read it out loud to me while it was happening, and then went into the room afterwards and read it to his dad and 2 sisters. I was so impressed I bought us a copy for my pastor-husband's office, and then 2 more copies for family members who responded to my email about losing our dog and my son reading this book to the family. I cannot say how much this helped our family.

This book had everything I needed to understand what my dad was going through as he slowly prepared to die. It made it all so understandable and much easier to accept. Not only is everything explained, it gives concrete examples from the author's experiences as Hospice nurses. Such an informative and comforting book to have...I have read it numerous times and find new things each time as the dying process progressed. I would recommend it to everyone.

I hate to be a wet blanket because so many people have drawn so much strength from this book. I found it to be extremely helpful in learning to listen to the symbolic language of dying people--a perspective that, in itself, is worth the read. It troubles me, however, that almost all of the deaths were reported as peaceful, even joyous, that almost all family members were healthy and fulfilled. Most of the dying people were young, smart, and/or extremely articulate.

I would have appreciated an account that included the not-so-pretty experiences of death--the ambiguous, ambivalent, hard, messy parts.
Including those pieces would have made the book more helpful.

The interventions of the authors were somehow just too neat and tidy.

My daughter and I think that EVERYONE should read this book. Sooner or later, most of us will need it. I read this book after bringing my Mother
home from hospital and placing her under Hospice care. I was with her 24/7 for that last month she lived. I cannot even begin to tell you what a help this book was to me and all members of my family. This book changed our lives. We look at life and death so differently than we did previously. I felt honored to be there through all the changes and the death of my Mother.

A book to share.......2007-09-18

I read this book while my grandmother was dying; I wish I had read it sooner. I have purchased multiple copies of this book and try to have a copy on hand at all times to share with the next person experiencing this process. The insights that the authors share are helpful in understanding this process without attempting to put it into a religious context, but in the dying person's language. They explain the value of listening to that person and what they are saying and respecting their choices.

Everyone needs to read this book, not just those who are experiencing this now, with someone, but everyone. We all will face this death sooner or later and the preparation this book gives invaluable insight into that final gift.

This book will help families and health care professionals understand the precious time surrounding death. So well written, it will make you laugh and cry and feel more comfort around a topic our society tends to avoid. I work in oncology and highly highly recomend this book to nurses, physicians, families, ANYONE. We all deal with death and this book really helps you to understand a new perspective!

I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT THE AUTHOR THIS BOOK DID A SUPERB JOB IN PLACING THE EMPHASIS AND KNOWLEDGE OF VARIOUS CULTURES HANDLING OF DEATH. I HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH FROM THIS BOOK.

Boilerplate plus.......2004-12-22

For those readers who have not done much reading or thinking about death, this book offers an easy to read and thoughtful introduction to looking at death vis a vis topics. In addition, this book provides for the scaffolded reading experience by asking the reader many questions, summarizing the main points of chapters and providing resources for further exploration.
On the negative side is the fact that the topical approach is available elsewehere in other books on death and dying in more encyclopedia form and more complete form.
The authors seem to think that death isnt something that people wonder a lot about or should wonder a lot about the mysterium tremendum of death. The illustrations in the book are sans context and images or illustrations on death are important in their own right for exploration as numerous authors like Robert Lifton have pointed to the importance of images when contemplating mortality. Furthermore the authors could have and should have indicated what complete exploration of death might be-surely the topical approach is just one amongst many approaches to death. So in this regard there is a disconnect between death as a subject of interest to be held at arms length and death as a highly personal vital concern that transcends topical approach.
In concluding if looking at death from arms length as a subject of interest is what youre into this book provides a good enough scaffolded reading experience. If you want something to be or more personal value in dealing or orienting to your own mortality then this wont fit the bill.

This book accomplishes a rare feat--appealing to those who would use it as a teaching guide but also so readable that the average reader will find it fascinating and invaluable. It is packed with illustrations as well as solid advice and history--from ancient funeral practices to today's arguments on assisted suicide. In between is every conceivable question and answer you could want on the subject of dying and death.

I will be using The Last Dance for the third year in a course I teach on Death and Dying in Western Culture. This text does a marvelous job of addressing the socio-cultural aspects of death in America and the world. The chapter on suicide is both helpful and haunting. There are so many excellent illustrations and photographs in this book that it really comes alive for the students. It is clear that the authors are very familiar with their subject matter, and that they care very much about those who read this book. I cannot imagine a better general text on the subject of death and dying.

I had to read this for school and let me just say, you will probably feel pretty depressed at the end of this book. The whole book has this cloud of dead always surrounding it. Another than that, it's a pretty good book. It's got alost of teen issues and sexual things in it, so I really wouldn't recommend it to anyone under the age of 14 or 15.

An amazing first novel.......2007-09-01

I had heard of "The Perks Of Being A Wallflower" for a long time from people on the internet. I had also seen it awhile and I eventually decided to buy it on Amazon to read it.

When it came in I didn't expect much of it. It was a small book and the whole story was a bunch of letters. Or at least that was my first impression.

After reading it, I've officially stated it as my favorite book. Although it was a first novel from Stephen Chbosky, I must say he truely did an amazing job writing it. It was so easy for me to relate to the main character Charlie. And all of the other characters seemed so real. I read it in two sittings. I won't give the plot because plenty of other reveiwers have posted it.

But I will tell you that after reading it my look on life was completely changed. If you ever have read it or will read it, you will understand what I mean.

Just so you know if you're considering to buy it, this is coming from a thirteen year old. And although I may be young, I can still tell you quite honestly that I highly recomend buying no matter your age. Some of the topics included though may not be sutible for a younger audience.

Chbosky has revealed a great deal about youth and their problems, and does so sensitively and with empathy. You have to read it closely because he weaves his facts into the story so subtly that you might miss them.

For some reason I decided to check out the audio book for a mild distraction. As a woman in her 30's, I was moved how the author did a wonderful job capturing the feelings of lonliness, anger, happiness, despair and the basic need of being love and loving others that most of us experience.

In my opinion, it almost takes someone with some life experiences to really see just how fragile we can be, whether it was yesterday or almost twenty years ago.

I wish I'd discovered "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" when I was still in high school. The main character is stunningly real and gives an authentic literary voice for millions of young adults. He goes through typical youthful indiscretions without the gloss of so many other stories featuring teens. Its short enough to finish in one read and powerful for readers of all ages.

Considered by many to be the most astute interpretation for Western culture of the Tibetan Book of the Dead and the Tibetan Book of the Living, this contemporary classic by Sogyal Rinpoche blends ancient ideas of Tibetan Buddhism with a fresh perspective from a master who has spent a good deal of time teaching and lecturing in the West.

It is most moving to read his prologue especially, in which he deals with the death of his master, for which he was present. The great spiritual process of learning to die, before dying, as the secret to life, is explored in this section. Much of what is now being reflected upon in the new spirituality of Echart Tolle and others is covered here with clarity and a certain depth not found in other western spiritual classics.

On a personal note, I revisited this book after dealing with a lost love and found it to be the pure water of the dharma that I needed in order to overcome the horrors of such a loss. I would encourage anyone to read this amazing book, but especially those who are in a place of pain, hopelessness, or suffering in this very moment. Strike while the iron is hot! The terrible, clear light of grief is in fact a step into profound self-awareness. It was an honor to read Rinpoche and to be touched by his sincerity and clear mastery of the practice.

First most lifechanging book I've ever read.......2007-10-02

I reviewed the second most life changing book I've ever read, so I figured I should come back and review the first most life changing book I've ever read, The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. After my husband died, I wanted to know what happened after you died. He was my one and only true love. When I read this book, I realized that Sogyal Rinpoche had some knowledge of what he was talking about, and this book had all the answers to the mystery of life and death for those with the wisdom to recognize it, and the determination to study and practice it. I read the book 3 times in a row right away right after I bought it.

A few years later after reading the book I joined Rigpa and took the classes they offered. After few years of practice, the cube farm way of life no longer made sense to me. So, much to the chagrin of all my relatives, I ditched my 6 figure Silicon Valley job to go work on a horse ranch by the beach!

Maybe the book should come with a warning label. Warning, this book could be hazardous to your income! Don't feel bad for me tho because I have a sweet IRA which I invest myself so I'm all set for retirement. You can feel jealous instead :-)

Actually, after some years of Buddhist practice, my clarity of mind has improved so I think if I ever had to go back to my old work, I would get all those enterprise-wide IT projects done better, faster, and everyone would have a lot more fun along the way.

Understandable at Last.......2007-08-23

This book makes a complex Buddhist belief understandable for most. The author illustrates principals with examples from his own life. Interspersed with poetry and songs, it is an insightful study on a most important subject.

A well written book by an author who understands the Tibetan teachings of impermanence. This book is an easy read for the novice student of Budhism, but I wouldn't recommend picking it up as a complete beginner. The book is best suited for early students who are at the least familiar with Tibetan teachings and philosophies.

It is an excellent companion to the Tibetan Book of the dead as it will help clear up some of the things explained in that text in an easy to read and understand fashion. The author makes good use of personal stories, and conventional teachings, and helps to simplify a very demanding aspect of Buddhist study.

I find it hard to fully express how important this book is.
The subject may seem morbid but the contra is true, like the bardol thodol it stands alone in spiritual writings.
