Customer Reviews:
Five Sweet Treats...and what that means.......2007-07-25
As mentioned in other reviews; this set of books is nicely smallish (5 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches), and beautifully drawn, and the 5 stories are lovely. What no one has yet bothered to mention is the answer to "What do you get?" in this smallish, prettily drawn and nicely written set?
You get 5 small, hard cover books in a nice, slick board box;
Lilly's Chocolate Heart, Owen's Marshmellow Chick, Wemberly's Ice-Cream Star, Julius's Candy Corn and Sheila Rae's Peppermint Stick.
Each short story involves a 'treat'; an Easter Marshmellow Chick, some Halloween Candy Corn, a Forth of July ice cream, etc, that barely mention the holiday to which they owe their existance. For example, although Owen does get an "Easter basket", there is no mention of Christmas in Sheila Rae's Peppermint Stick and no mention of why a red, white and blue star-shaped ice-cream would be Wemberly's special treat "on a hot day".
All of which is fine with me, I thoroughly enjoy reading these with my 3 1/2 and 4 1/2 year old kids, even our 18 month old seems to enjoy these stories, but I feel if we were not a Christmas-and-Easter-celebrating household, this set would have been a bit of a bummer. So, consider yourself warned. :)
just a little too sweet.......2007-07-22
first, these are great little stories. kevin henkes is a fabulous author. my only issue is that i would have liked to have known ahead of time that all the stories were about sugary sweets and the characters hording their sweets in some way. it's turned out to be fine - my daughter still loves the stories. i just would have liked a heads' up.
Big Help.......2007-04-11
This is a great set for anyone teaching the Lucy Calkins Units of Study for Primary Grades!
Cute and Clever.......2007-03-31
I am a big fan of all of Kevin Henkes' children's books. This little book set is bright and colorful and looks good enough to eat!
They are a good introduction to the rest of his stories. Not only are these written with little ones in mind, they are smartly written. I enjoy them as much as my son! Henkes really knows how to capture the innocence and whimsy of children everywhere.
one of my toddlers all time favorite gifts.......2007-03-08
My 2 1/2 year old adores these books. She brings them to me to read to her several times throughout the day and night, never seeming to tire of them, She has had them for about 6 months so this is no passing fancy.
In the large size, any one of these books would cost what you can get five of them in this box set. Actually, this size is much better for little hands and I think adds to the fun. I am keeping it in mind as an ideal gift to give other children in the future. My daughter has learned many words from the books, just because she enjoys repeating them after me. Her favorite is "Delicious!" from Julius's Candycorn. This is definitely a good buy.

Book Description
Lumphy is a stuffed buffalo. StingRay is a stuffed stingray. And Plastic... well, Plastic isn't quite sure what she is. They all belong to the Little Girl who lives on the high bed with the fluffy pillows. A very nice person to belong to.
But outside of the Little Girl's room things can be confusing. Like when Lumphy gets sticky with peanut butter on a picnic, why is he called "dirty"? Or when StingRay jumps into the bathtub, what will happen to her fur? And where in the house can they find the Little Girl a birthday present that she will love the most?
Together is best for these three best friends. Together they look things up in the dictionary, explore the basement, and argue about the meaning of life. And together they face dogs, school, television commercials, the vastness of the sea and the terrifying bigness of the washing machine.
With all the appeal of a classic, here are six linked stories form Emily Jenkins, and illustrated by Caldecott winning Paul O. Zelinsky that showcase the unforgettable adventures--and misadventures-- of three extraordinary friends.
Customer Reviews:
Fun book, good quality and presentation.......2007-09-08
I bought this for my 6 year old cousin and she enjoyed it (except it does not have that much illustration). The story its self is fun and interesting and she has read it 3 times already! I would recommend the book
Stuffed animals have feelings too.......2007-08-23
Regardless of one's age, this book is a pleasant reminder of the simplicities of childhood. Who didn't have a favorite stuffed animal, or even toy, that was "real" to them? It was easy to fall in love with these toys!
A Huge Hit in Our House!.......2007-05-02
My 7-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter demanded I read this to them again. This is the first time they have ever requested a chapter book be read a second time. They wait for their favorite lines and speak them along with me, laughing the whole time. My daughter plans to write a letter to the author asking for more stories about the toys, also a first. What a wonderful book!
Wonderful read aloud.......2007-04-08
My six year old and I just finished this book, and I can't remember the last time I looked forward to reading aloud so much ! Even my 9 year old was so hooked that he snagged the book to finish on his own. Jenkins has a wonderful sense of humor and the illustrations are adorable. We can't wait for her next book !
A good read for all.......2007-03-26
This is a lovely book, with toys that talk and become as real and dear as any family pet. My 7 year old son has enjoyed reading and rereading this book and my husband and I always look forward to it as well. It's a refreshing break from some of the newer books that are so fast-paced and not very well-written. This feels like an old time classic to be kept and passed down.

Customer Reviews:
NICE LITTLE LESSON HERE AND THE LITTLE ONES LOVE IT........2007-09-22
The cover of this book (I am reviewing the hardback), is enough to catch your eye and it will certainly catch the eye of your child. I recently had the pleasure of reading this one to a group of pre-school kids, and not one child was unhappy with the choice of book. I even got requests for seconded readings! That is a nice endorsement for any childrens book. This work is actually a bit of a mini-lesson in accepting those that may be a bit different..i.e. it is okay if the other kid is green rather than yellow, it is good to have diverse friends. The bold, simple art work in this one is an absolute delight to the eye. The text is simple and repetative and the characters are just simply cute. The little duckling and little frog are pretty typical you children and our little human children can certainly identify with them. Actually, there is not very much not to like about this book. Highly recommend.
Love this book!!!.......2007-08-27
My 2 year old has fallen in love with Little Quack. Ever since reading "Little Quacks Bedtime" she's been obsessed. Since I'm a push-over, I've purchased every book in the Little Quack series and while she LOVES them all, this one is her favorite. We've read it everyday for about a month now. I think it's all the fun sounds she gets to make as she reads along with me. I would recommend this book highly!!!
Great Illustrations.......2007-03-23
Such a cute book. Little Quack reminds me of my little one. Beautiful Illustrations
Charming illustrations, perrfect for bedtime reading.......2006-06-02
Little Quack's New Friend by Lauren Thompson and illustrated by Derek Anderson is a completely delightful children's book. The bright cover got me to bring it home from the library and the clever story entranced my 3 year old daughter. Little Quack and his siblings: Widdle, Waddle, Piddle, and Puddle meet a new friend Little Ribbit, and they play together. The illustrations are amazingly charming, the words just repetitive enough for my daughter to enjoy what's coming next without me wanting to tear out my hair, and even my twelve year old daughter sat through a reading. My husband declared it adorable. It has a sweet, easy message of getting along despite our differences which is perfect for this age group. I've ordered other books in the series from the library, and if they are as good as this one, they will probably become Christmas presents.

Fun Books!.......2007-05-13
My son at 6 months really was not into books. This series uses small puppets that can be wiggled with each page keeping kids interst. The stories are nothing special but the illustrations are bright and colorful. I have since bought a set as a gift for a friend.
Great and simple.......2007-04-06
What can I say! I work with kids for a living and they love it!

Little Bear meets Emily, a human girl, and her doll. 'Once again Little Bear proves himself to be as wistful and tender a little creature as exists in the child's library.' -- K.
Customer Reviews:
Another good Primer from Ms. Minarik - a review of "Little Bear's Friend".......2006-06-13
I am amazed at the sort of complex storytelling that Ms. Minarik can accomplish with fairly simple words. [Why can't more modern authors accomplish the same?!?]
In this book, Little Bear finds two new friends, a little girl named Emily and her doll, Lucy. Together they have adventures which include going to a party, a broken arm for Lucy, and tragedy of tragedies... Emily's having to go away at the end of summer to attend school.
Five Stars. Wonderful storytelling. Good Read-aloud. I would estimate that this "I Can Read" book is on the first grade level. [Other sources list it as a second grade reader: 2.2 Level.]
Principally the difficulty lies not in the vocabulary but in the fact that there is quite a bit of dialog and more words per page than is found in Ms. Minarik's earlier stories.
charming beginning reader.......2003-01-11
These stories about Little Bear and his friend Emily are a charming introduction to the world of reading for beginners. Little Bear is a sweet child to his mother and father and a good friend to Duck, Hen, Owl and Cat. Minarik's simple narrative will be easy enough for early readers, and Sendak's illustrations will hold their attention. The four stories are: Little Bear and Emily, about the friends' meeting; Duck, Baby Sitter; The Party at Owl's House, in which Lucy falls from a tree; and "Your Friend, Little Bear", about Little Bear's coping when Emily goes away for the school year.
A wonderful rediscovery!.......2001-12-14
I just found this book in a used book store recently and I am thrilled! I remember Little Bear so well from childhood. I bought the book and it proudly sits on my shelf waiting for the day when I have a child to share it with.
This book will give you warm fuzzys! Else has created a wonderfully warm, sweet and adorable book with cute characters.
You and your child will really enjoy it! Don't pass it up!
A childhood treasure waiting to be discovered.......1998-09-22
As a little girl in the early 1960's, Little Bear's Friend was one of my favorite books. What a joy to discover that this old friend is still available for my three year old daughter to enjoy!

A Treasure.......2004-04-07
I'm pretty surprised about the few people here who have actually bashed this book. As a big Beatle fan and one who's read tons of books about them, I don't recall any inconsistancy's in this book whatsoever. Though short, this is probably one of the most prized Beatle books in my collection. My only complaint is I wish George Martin would do the same thing he's done here with Sgt. Pepper and write books about the sessions for the White Album, Revolver and Abby Rd. : ) A treasure to own. A book to read and re-read over and over.
A must read for all music producers.......2001-01-22
It is a well accepted fact that two of the best produced pop/rock albums to date are Sgt. Peppers and Pet Shop. The reason for owning this album is to gain an inside look into the master mind of one of these most important albums. It may be true that our recording equipment has improved our flexability but nothing can replace a truly great producer and great musicianship. George Martin is one of the truly great hero's of our ART and this book gives us a wonderful look into one of his master pieces. I am a big Beatles fan but this book is really directed to producers rather than The Beatles fan base...and I love it. This book has become very hard to get a hold of but it is a MUST HAVE for the library of every producer.
You place your bets, you takes your chances.......2000-03-17
This book isn't perfect. As a previous reviewer has remarked, it's inconsistent with Martin's previous books, not to mention other books that have been written about the Beatles. Still, it provides a contrasting point of view, and as such is worth looking over. Nobody's perfect, and Martin admits in so many words that his memory isn't ironclad. Just don't bet the ranch on what Martin has to say.
Read "All You Need Is [ouch!] Ears" instead........1999-10-14
There is very little here that isn't also in George Martin's earlier and much superior (and ungrammatically entitled, alas) "All You Need is Ears". The stories retold are altered, seemingly to jibe with Paul McCartney's relentless post-Lennon rewriting of Beatle history. Veracity aside, this tends to make them banal and humorless.
Recommended: PENTATONIC SCALES FOR THE JAZZ-ROCK KEYBOARDIST by Jeff Burns.
crudely written, redundant, and of questionable authenticity.......1999-10-11
It's amazing to think the author needed the services of a ghostwriter to write this badly. You'd think a reasonably intelligent twelve-year-old could have accomplished it by himself. Those who "[assume] the TRUTH [sic] will be 'good enough' [sic] entertainment for any sensible reader" may appreciate the Andy Warhol documentary in which the exterior of a building is filmed for twenty-four hours (the film lasts twenty-four hours). The art of the memoir is knowing what to leave out. McCartney's habitual trick is to damn John Lennon with faint praise. He loves to tell (and retell and retell again) how John Lennon contributed to his "It's Getting Better" the line "It can't get no worse", while completely ignoring the sophisticated and innovative harmony of "Julia" and "Because", etc. Rather a coincidence then that George Martin treats us to here to yet another rehearsal of this insipid story. (John Lennon was murdered December 1980. Interviews with John Lennon appeared in the December issues of "Playboy" and "Rolling Stone". In neither of these interviews does John Lennon attribute any bit of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" to Paul McCartney. In 1965, on the other hand, the Beatles were still pretending that the attribution "Lennon-McCartney" necessarily implied a collaboration.) I can't help suspecting that in this case "research"--in contradistinction to believing your own eyes and ears--meant letting your book be edited by Paul McCartney's propensity for dissimulation and enormous ego.

Book Description
Everybody knows that elephants and rhinos can never be friends. Or can they? Babar's daughter Isabelle and Rataxes's son Vic aren't about to let the grown-ups stop them from playing together. But when they sneak off in a boat, the weather turns stormy and they worry they will never see their families again!
First published in 1990, this is a heartwarming story, perfect for reading at home or in the classroom.
