5 out of 5 stars Love &Sadness all in one.......2007-09-16

It must be so hard for some of the offspring of Stars to front their demons. I do believe these two stars loved greatly but coming from different backgrounds was always going to be difficult.Their working days were completely opposite which had to cause friction. However I have passed this book around for others to enjoy. Unfortunately Sandra's addiction to alcohol would have been difficult for Bobby as he did not like this scene. His problems lay elsewhere. Nonetheless two great talents produced a loving son. Great read.

5 out of 5 stars Loved this bio- very well written.......2007-08-01

This book is a touching recollection of the glorious, yet shattered lives of Sandra Dee and Bobby Darin, the Dream Lovers of the title who were entertainment superstars during the late 50s and 60s. Their son Dodd along with his co-writer Maxine Paetro did a terrific job in telling his family's heartbreaking story by getting input from many of the people closest to his parents. I would also recommend picking up the DVD of Bobby's last TV show in 73 "Mack is Back" along with reading Dream Lovers. They go well together.

5 out of 5 stars Good read.......2007-07-29

I read this book cover to cover in a day. From a son's perspective, it was hard to see the progressive decline in his parent's lives through his eyes. Still, I believe it was told with as much objectivity as he could muster. I'm still fascinated with the Darrin/Dee relationship after all these years.

5 out of 5 stars A sad and truthful story written by a beloved son.......2007-07-03

I fill Dodd Darin wrote a very tragic and truthful story of both of his parents. I felt he captured their inner feelings of joy and of heartbreak. He also showed his love for both. I have and would recommend this book to others

5 out of 5 stars Dream Lovers.......2007-02-07

Loved this book. It will make for another interesting movie about these two lovers whom after they met were forever joined together solidified even more by their son. Tragic love story and had it not been for Bobby's short time on earth I am sure they would have worked it out and stayed together forever.

I cannot help but feel for Dodd who somehow hoped that his parents could have worked it out. As the son of two wonderful icons, he showed us the turmoil in their lives.

I thank Dodd for sharing his pain as well as his happy times with his parents though short lived.

1 out of 5 stars Important theme, but not helpful.......2007-06-19

If you like nice theories, this is a great book. If you are objective and want to solve problems and apply knowledge, forget it. This is one more book about initiation, mythology, the goddess, quests, the sacred and so on. Good for academics.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent explanation.......2006-08-30

This book does an excellent explanation of exactly how I felt toward my mother, and helped me to start to release my victimized perception of myself regarding her. The philosophies about hurting nature as a result of my mom seemed quite out of place, everywhere they were mentioned, but nearly everything else was well placed.

4 out of 5 stars Yes, it has some hyperbole and a pop psychology feel but it is still thought-provoking.......2006-03-25

Having just used the "Search Inside the Book" feature on Amazon to look at parts of another of Gurian's books (about choosing movies and books for boys and teens), I used it again to get a feel for this book. It convinced me to buy it, just as it convinced me NOT to buy that other book.

While browsing through sections of this book (Mothers, Sons, and Lovers...)I was intrigued by many of the points made. I wanted to know more, including how our society short changes boys in all sorts of way, major and minor, resulting in men who may be searching for a stronger sense of what being "male" in our society means.

One of the most crucial relationships is between a boy and his mother, as well as an active, engaged father. What I particularly liked was the emphasis on helping men heal past wounds, on building from the here and now to the future. I didn't find this book to be a "Blame the Mother" type book but more of an exploration of what can go right - and wrong - in families and , most particularly, between mother and son.

The insights I got from this book will affect my future behavior with my sons and I hope that males who are now living on their own but with unresolved issues with their mothers find solace, support and healing from reading this book.

I confess that I found some of the language to be a bit high-flown for my taste but that is just a very personal opinion and it may not bother other readers. Get past that and go for the nuggets of wisdom that are in this book.

I would strongly suggest readers also get a copy of the book and/or DVD Raising Cain because the it addresses some of the concerns the author has raised about how to raise boy in a system that isn't often designed to best meet their needs (in particular, the average public or private school).

5 out of 5 stars "I'm very close to my mother.".......2005-03-06

Would it not seem common sense self preservation to politely run not walk in the other direction from any man who wants you to know this about him right off the bat? Mother-bound men in literature and film from Oedipus to Norman Bates -- and every sentimental serial killer with a picture of his mother on his nightstand in between -- have yet to teach even 21st Century women the hard lessons in steering clear of this terrible spidermother tragedy. Should have long been a classic in popular psychology; recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Female Reader.......2004-11-25

This book was tremendously helpful in helping me to understand how my Man's Mother shaped his life, why he has such difficulty with intimate relationships and what perhaps he can do to help himself. Thank you Paul Gurian! A library must have for any woman who finds herself involved with a Peter Pan, a perfectionist, or a misogynist.

Sons and Lovers was the first modern portrayal of a phenomenon that later, thanks to Freud, became easily recognizable as the Oedipus complex. Never was a son more indentured to his mother's love and full of hatred for his father than Paul Morel, D.H. Lawrence's young protagonist. Never, that is, except perhaps Lawrence himself. In his 1913 novel he grappled with the discordant loves that haunted him all his life--for his spiritual childhood sweetheart, here called Miriam, and for his mother, whom he transformed into Mrs. Morel. It is, by Lawrence's own account, a book aimed at depicting this woman's grasp: "as her sons grow up she selects them as lovers--first the eldest, then the second. These sons are urged into life by their reciprocal love of their mother--urged on and on. But when they come to manhood, they can't love, because their mother is the strongest power in their lives."

Of course, Mrs. Morel takes neither of her two elder sons (the first of whom dies early, which further intensifies her grip on Paul) as a literal lover, but nonetheless her psychological snare is immense. She loathes Paul's Miriam from the start, understanding that the girl's deep love of her son will oust her: "She's not like an ordinary woman, who can leave me my share in him. She wants to absorb him." Meanwhile, Paul plays his part with equal fervor, incapable of committing himself in either direction: "Why did his mother sit at home and suffer?... And why did he hate Miriam, and feel so cruel towards her, at the thought of his mother. If Miriam caused his mother suffering, then he hated her--and he easily hated her." Soon thereafter he even confesses to his mother: "I really don't love her. I talk to her, but I want to come home to you."

The result of all this is that Paul throws Miriam over for a married suffragette, Clara Dawes, who fulfills the sexual component of his ascent to manhood but leaves him, as ever, without a complete relationship to challenge his love for his mother. As Paul voyages from the working-class mining world to the spheres of commerce and art (he has fair success as a painter), he accepts that his own achievements must be equally his mother's. "There was so much to come out of him. Life for her was rich with promise. She was to see herself fulfilled... All his work was hers."

The cycles of Paul's relationships with these three women are terrifying at times, and Lawrence does nothing to dim their intensity. Nor does he shirk in his vivid, sensuous descriptions of the landscape that offers up its blossoms and beasts and "shimmeriness" to Paul's sensitive spirit. Sons and Lovers lays fully bare the souls of men and earth. Few books tell such whole, complicated truths about the permutations of love as resolutely without resolution. It's nothing short of searing to be brushed by humanity in this manner. --Melanie Rehak

Book Description

With a new Introduction by Geoff Dyer
Commentary by Anthony Burgess, Jessie Chambers, Frieda Lawrence, V.S. Pritchett, Kate Millett, and Alfred Kazin

Of all Lawrence's work, Sons and Lovers tells us most about the emotional source of his ideas," observed Diana Trilling. "The famous Lawrence theme of the struggle for sexual power--and he is sure that all the struggles of civilized life have their root in this primary contest--is the constantly elaborated statement of the fierce battle which tore Lawrence's family."

Sons and Lovers is one of the landmark novels of the twentieth century. When it appeared in 1913, it was immediately recognized as the first great modern restatement of the oedipal drama, and it is now widely considered the major work of D. H. Lawrence's early period. This intensely autobiographical novel recounts the story of Paul Morel, a young artist growing to manhood in a British working-class family rife with conflict. The author's vivid evocation of the all-consuming nature of possessive love and sexual attraction makes this one of his most powerful novels.

For the critic Kate Millett, " Sons and Lovers is a great novel because it has the ring of something written from deeply felt experience. The past remembered, it conveys more of Lawrence's own knowledge of life than anything else he wrote. His other novels appear somehow artificial beside it."

Drawing on both the physical setting and emotional atmosphere of his own childhood, Lawrence's evocation of a working-class life and of family conflicts is a literary masterpiece rich in insights into its author.

5 out of 5 stars A Portrait of An Artist as a Young Mama's Boy..........2007-09-30

"Whatever else is unsure in this stinking dunghill of a world a mother's love is not." James Joyce

"Mama's gonna check out all your girl friends for you... Mama won't let anyone dirty get through... Mama's gonna wait up till you get in... Mama will always find out where you've been... Mamma's gonna keep baby healthy and clean..." Lyrics from the song "Mother" by Roger Waters of "Pink Floyd"

This rather abstract, deeply affecting autobiographical novel by D.H. Lawrence is sure to unearth a myriad of emotions and conceptions for most readers as it did for me. In fact, one could easily scribe a terse, ten page thesis on this one. Talk about a complex story filled with a group of complicated, and yet captivating characters, especially our two main protagonists - Paul Morel (based on D.H. Lawrence himself) and his possessive, yet extremely endearing mother Mrs. Gertrude Morel. Yes, as you have probably read in the other reviews, Freud would have loved this one, for it's a prime example of his Oedipus complex theory. However, to focus solely on that aspect of this story would be doing this masterpiece a grave injustice, for it is so much more than that. The abnormal and imperfect relationships of Lawrence's "Sons and Lovers" are among the most widely discussed and analyzed in English Literature. This is one of those novels that will keep you completely absorbed from the first chapter on to the very last page.

The story takes place right around the turn-of-the-century in the small, rather poor, mining village of Bestwood, England (Bestwood actually based on Eastwood where Lawrence was born). All of the main characters (with the exception of Clara Dawes, who was a composite) are based on real people in Lawrence's early life. Essentially, Paul Morel's early life story is the story of D.H. Lawrence. Paul is one of four children of Mr. and Mrs. Morel, two people who are complete opposites of one another, with the former being an uneducated, uncouth, and extremely unsophisticated mineworker. Estranged from her husband early on in their marriage, Mrs. Morel decides to take comfort in her four children, particularly (after a family catastrophe that I will refrain from disclosing) her middle son Paul: "Wherever he went she felt her soul went with him. Whatever he did she felt her soul stood by him..." And to young Paul, completely alienated from his ogre father, his mother is his whole existence, by far and away "the strongest tie in his life". However, trouble soon awaits the pair as Paul begins his slow ascent into manhood.

As Paul enters into his teens, and those hormones start kicking in, he soon falls deeply in love with the austere, esoteric, loner Miriam who lives on a farm not too far from Paul's home. For many years the two of them carry on an extremely intimate, but yet purely platonic relationship. An intimacy that leaves Paul confused and totally unfulfilled. His feelings for this all-consuming girl seesaw back and forth from love to hate. And of course, his mother far from approves, "she's not like an ordinary woman... she wants to absorb him... til there is nothing left of him, even for himself... she will suck him up." Of course, his mother's adverse opinion of Miriam proves to be one of the main reasons he chooses not to marry the girl.

Paul's second love affair is with Mrs. Clara Dawes, a suffragette, who is currently separated from her troubled husband. She is introduced to Paul through Miriam, and at first the two become close friends (it is her sage advice which soon helps him end his frustrating, platonic relationship with Miriam). However, despite her being married and Paul's heart belonging to someone else, the two of them begin a passionate love affair. Of course this affair also leaves his mother very despondent and discouraged to say the least. And in the end, of course... well... I'll refrain from disclosing anything more.

I know this is a rather long review, however I still think I could write for days about this one and even then not quite do it justice. D.H. writes with such detailed, flowery, and poignant prose. This novel is a unique, in-depth look inside of the artist himself. He very bravely sketches for us his true character, warts and all, and about all the events that made him what he was.

Lastly, I've read several reviews bashing Mrs. Morel, but all in all, with what she had to work with, she seemed to do a relatively good job in raising her children. The majority of 'mama boys' I have known in my life usually are self-centered, egotistical, under-achieving, pompous jackasses. They are the type of guys who think that it's their planet, and the rest of us here are just visiting. Thankfully so, D.H. Lawrence did not turn out that way! Ergo, his mother had to do something right.

In closing, all I have to say is - WHAT A MASTERPIECE! If this isn't deserving of five stars, then I don't know what is.

2 out of 5 stars Weak Characters.......2007-06-12

Gertrude Morel thought at first that she was getting into a good marriage. Walter Morel seemed happy and successful and was not a drinker. She thought he would make a good husband and a good father to their children. It was only after they were married for awhile that she found that he spent much of his time drunk and didn't own any of the property he'd told her he owned. A seed of resentment was planted.

Once their children, especially two sons, William and Paul, were born, Gertrude stopped caring much about her husband at all and concentrated on her offspring.

Paul ends up with his mother's undiluted attention and affection. His decisions are largely based on keeping her happy, and when his thoughts wander to other females, such as those he dates, his mother grows petulant and her pouting convinces her son to come back to her. Although Paul has a good job and a bright future as an artist, he finds himself unwilling to commit to the girls he dates, because nobody can quite match up to his mother in his mind.

This is a sad story of a mother ruining her son's life without meaning to. She really only wants to love him, but her love is so overbearing that she doesn't leave room for anyone else in his mind.

The characters in this story didn't grab me. They were all incredibly weak, from Walter with his drinking problem drifting farther and farther away from his family; to Paul, unable to break away from his mother; to Gertrude, unable to make a life for herself and clinging to her son instead; to Miriam, allowing herself to be hurt over and over instead of walking away from Paul once and for all. They all needed to have some sense shaken into them.

4 out of 5 stars Sons and Lovers.......2007-05-28

This book didn't seem to have the normal climactic format that I had expected, which is perhaps why it is considered a piece of literature and not popular fiction. The book as a whole read rather flatly, without much action or drama, a fact lending itself to its rather autobiographical nature. It was nonetheless, very beautifully written. The book seemed more poetic in composition and most certainly more emotionally intense than perhaps would be expected. In is in fact the poetic sentiments and composition of the book that keep the reader so engaged into what would otherwise be a rather depressing work. It is ironic that a work that seems to focus so much on the reality of life would at the same time evoke a romanticism of feeling and words which it would normally criticize. That too also seems to be the conflict Paul Morel finds within himself.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good, Def. A Classic.......2007-03-26

I enjoy reading the works of D.H. Lawrence. I believe no other author of his time explored the complexities of human sexuality, behavior, intimacy, and depth as poignantly as him. By far I loved Lady Chatterley's Lover, his most famous and controversial novel. SONS AND LOVERS is the second Lawrence book I've read. I can't really say if I truly liked the book or not. I believe that what this book explores is deeply interesting and even haunting, seeing how controlling and possessive a mother could be on her sons, and how deeply attached sons could be towards their mother. It was also interesting seeing the complexities of the characters grow and develop with each chapter. I can definitely see why SONS AND LOVERS is considered a classic. The only flaw i found with this novel was how annoying Paul Morel is. I just found his behavior to be pathetic and ridiculous. But other than that, this is a great read, but not necessarily Lawrence's BEST work.

5 out of 5 stars Autobiography Reigns Supreme.......2006-08-27

Few novels by any author have ever been examined under the microscope of autobiography more thoroughly than SONS AND LOVERS. Nearly every character represents someone from the life of its author D. H. Lawrence, who clearly has used himself as a model for the protagonist, Paul Morel. To complicate matters there is a well-documented undercurrent of the Oedipal Complex between Paul and his mother Gertrude (also the name of Hamlet's mother who was linked to Hamlet in the same potentially incestuous way). Lawrence was later to deny ever having read Freud but his much older wife Frieda (a dead ringer for Gertrude) has written in her memoirs that she had several discussions with Lawrence about just that theory.

Gertrude, a pretty woman of twenty-three marries a handsome, virile, but loutish man named Walter. Their marriage is unhappy since he drinks, is abusive, and has nothing in common with his wife. They have four children of whom Paul is the focus of dramatic interest. He is artistic, sensitive, and hates how his father treats Gertrude. She in turn lavishes on him all the love that might otherwise have gone to Walter. As Paul matures, he meets two women of consequence: the virginal and puritanical Miriam and the earthy and sexually aggressive Clara. Gertrude approves of Clara but disapproves of Miriam. From an Oedipal perspective, Miriam is a threat to Gertrude's primacy over Paul while Miriam as a floozy is not. Paul has an extended affair with Clara that she breaks off when her husband re-enters the picture and beats the crap out of Paul. Paul has a single sexual contact with Miriam, knowing that she would find it most distasteful, so he breaks off this relationship. Gertrude dies of cancer with a push from Paul. Walter becomes a cripple and drifts out of Paul's life. Paul devotes his life to his art as the book ends. All of these characters relate to Paul in ways that are at best weird and at worst ugly to contemplate. As Gertrude smothers Paul with a misplaced affection, she makes sure, perhaps unknowingly--we are not sure, that he will have difficulty relating his own burgeoning sexuality with any other woman. Miriam, in her sexlessness, is a Gertrude surrogate that Paul can feel comfortable with so long as they do not achieve intimacy. Clara is the chippie that Paul can show physical affection toward only so long as he does not show emotional intimacy. It is no surprise that both relationships turn out badly. Walter, who starts out as the Bad Guy, slowly accrues the sympathy of the reader as he has a positive side that even the confused Paul can see.

SONS AND LOVERS may be full of a constant undercurrent of sexual energies running at cross purposes, but it is not necessary to see the book only or even mostly in terms of seeing a twisted Oedipus to enjoy reading it. There are other non-sexual themes at work that engage the reader. Lawrence was upset over the slow disintegration of English society caused by an encroaching industrialism that he saw as crushing the human spirit. Whether one chooses to see SONS AND LOVERS under a sociological or a sexual lens is a matter of personal taste. Lawrence, who was an advocate of freedom of choice, would certainly agree.

From famous writers and personalities who call the city home, whether by birth or simply love, these pieces written in the wake of Hurricane Katrina serve as a timeless tribute to New Orleans.

Sentimental, joyful, and witty, these essays by celebrated writers, entertainers, chefs, and fans honor the life of one of America's most beloved cities.

4 out of 5 stars A Milestone or an Epitaph?.......2006-03-03

MY NEW ORLEANS is a compilation of essays and a few poems about the Big Easy. Most were written post Katrina. The lead poem, "Nasty Water" by James Nolan, however, first published in 1997, is hauntingly prophetic. The authors, ranging from Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Olen Butler to restaurant owners Leah Chase and Ella Brennan, are united in their love for the city. And therein rests the beauty of this book. There are no questions or answers, no pointed fingers, no predictions or solutions. Here are multiple points of view by natives and lovers of a city that is different, yet they point in the same direction - love of place, and a worry. Is Katrina a milestone or an epitaph?

        Book Description

When a trip home for Spring Break turns out to be less than a vacation, 21 year old, Nyzera Wallace becomes the target of long time secrets, hidden lies and a very speedily developed and unexpected relationship.

The divorce of her parents kicks things off, and Nyzera sets out on a quest for answers. Her mother can only provide one point of view, but because of Nyzera's not-so-great relationship with her, "Ma" is kicked to the curb and Nyzera seeks out the one true source she can count on, her father.

"Daddy" sets the record straight. He discloses the past issues with her mother, which led to the divorce, and then he introduces Nyzera to the new lady in his life, Ms. Regina Taylor. Regina is a very successful corporate lawyer with her own practice. She's beautiful, physically fit and a far cry from Nyzera's father's usual type. To Nyzera, Regina is the perfect role model. She's totally impressed with Regina's overall person but even more impressed with her extremely sexy son, Tashán.

Tashán, a 25-year-old interior decorator (not your typical profession for a young black straight male) finds Nyzera just as intriguing, but because of the relationship his mother has with her father he doesn't fall victim to Nyzera's advances.

Nyzera is relentless in her pursuit, though. Tashán begins to buckle under her charm and appeal but soon retreats when his mother drops a bomb on the both of them. As of result of this news Tashán takes action suited for his best interest, and Nyzera is left in a state of utter confusion.

The astonishing information causes Tashán and Nyzera to set out on missions of their own, which leads them to a much-needed confrontation, which, at a later point, brings closure to their tumultuous relationship.

        4 out of 5 stars Spoiled Brat!.......2005-05-22

On a trip home from college, Nyzera finds out that after being married for fourteen years, her parents are going through a divorce. She first gets one side of the story from her mother and then hears the other side from her father Vaughn, who she favors. She believes her father and blames her mother for the failed relationship. Meanwhile daddy has moved on and has a new ready made family he want Nzera to meet.
Nyzera is receptive to Regina, daddy's girlfriend who is a criminal lawyer. When she meets Regina's son Tashan, she immediately wants him and feels that this may be the love she has been waiting for. Although Tashan also has feelings for her; but his main goal is to have Nyzera's father adopt him. After all, Vaughn has been like the father he never had for the past 20 years! Meaning daddy had been cheating on mother all this time! AND...Tashan wants Vaughn to be his father legally!
So here's where the story heats up.
I don't want to give away the whole story, but I have lots of questions to ask the author David Williams, who I met recently at a literary event.
This book will definitely be up for discussion at one of our book club meettings!
Basically, I like this fast paced story, but I felt that Nyzera's character could have been developed a lot more. This girl did not have any love for her mother. There was no mention of her friends until she felt she needed them, and she was ready to kick ass at the drop of a hat. As far as I am concerned there had to be a lot more to her personality than that rough exterior. Tashan's character seems to be a nice man but what did we really learn about him?
The cover and title of this novel will get this book noticed and it is worth the read. I was not happy with the ending...all that drama and then...read for yourself.

3 out of 5 stars MY LOVER, MY BROTHER, MY DADDY'S SON.......2005-02-25

Zera, a 21-year-old college student returns home for spring break to find out her parents are divorce, and her father has moved on. but her mother is stuggling with it. Zera listens to her mother reason why, unsatisfy with her answer, waits on her father to explain. Zera meets Regina Taylor, the new woman is her father life (at least that's what she thinks). Regina is everything Zera mother isn't. Zera looks up to Regina for all she has accomplished and the way she takes care of herself. Zera meets Tashun(25), Regina's son, and is attracted to him. After coming close to having sex, Regina gives them some news that changes their relationship. Can Zera control her feeling for Tashun? Zera treats her mother so bad. I can't image treating my mother this way, no matter what happen between my parents. There are always 3 sides to a story, her mother's, her father's and the truth. She was a spoiled, selfish, disrepectful daddy's girl with some serious issues. I dislike her the entire book. This book was just okay to me. I would probably read more of his writing because he's a good writer. This book just didn't do anything for me.

5 out of 5 stars My Lover My brother My Daddy's Son.......2005-02-10

I think it was a great book. Nyzera was a bit of a rebel. I didn't like her all that much. My mom is everything to me and she didnt treat her mom right, she needed to have a little more respect for her mother. After all that was her mother. I just think she was to rude in every aspect. I loved the book I just didnt love Nyzera. She's too much of a daddy's girl. Anything her father said she would be ok with it. What her mom did to her father was not good but then again any woman would do that if they suspect that their husband is cheating on her. I don't justify her mothers actions but she had a reason for doing what she did it was kind of like payback. Only that Nyzera doesn't see it that way she just sees her mom as this slut that cheated on her father without barely hearing her mother's part of the story and only relying on what her father told her. As for Tashan I think it was wrong the way that he told Nyzera's father to adopt him legally. I mean he knew Nyzera loved him and that would hurt her why did he want to all of a sudden become her legal brother. After almost having sex a couple of times I think that's a little disrespectful for Nyzera's father and for Nyzera. If he was already considering on becoming Nyzera's brother he should've thought about that before he decided to be with her or to look at her in nothing but a sister way. In this book I think they all have their faults nobody's perfect so I think that's what mostly makes it such a great read. To me there were no boring parts and it kept me interested at all times not knowing what was going to happen next.

5 out of 5 stars Nyzera really is a trip!.......2005-01-27

I absolutely loved this book. Nyzera really is a trip like the back of the book says. She reminded me of the no-nonsense "Winter" from the book, "The Coldest Winter Ever." Zera was just as hardcore, and she pretty much didn't take anything from anyone. I have already recommended this book to all of my friends. The story line was very unique; unlike anything else I have read. I think the author put a lot of thought into his characters, and for a first-time writer, he kept me interested from page to page. Great work!

          Book Description

Sons and Lovers is a highly autobiographical and compelling portrayal of childhood, adolescence, and the price of family bonds. Repelled by her uneducated and sometimes violent husband, delicate Gertrude Morel devotes her life to her sons. But conflict is inevitable when Paul seeks relationships with women to escape the suffocating grasp of his mother. As profoundly affecting today as it was nearly a century ago, this is the peerless Lawrence at his most personal.

          4 out of 5 stars a good book.......1999-04-03

A young man must break away from his mother and her life before he can discover a life of his own.

5 out of 5 stars Like S. Maughm, Lawrence presents a class emerging.......1998-09-17

I skipped over Lawrence for years. I had heard the tawdry tales of his work and felt a bodice ripper is a bodice ripper no matter what century you put it in. But I was wrong! He is a marvel. As soon as I finished Sons and Lover's I went out and got The Rainbow. S & L, reads very quickly, much like Maughm's On Human Bondage. They are both of the same period and are both loosly based on the perspective authors lives. Tantilizing, they allow us a glimpse into the emerging industrial era. The middle classes and lower middle classes are emerging into the plutocracy but slowly. All around them are the dredges of a past system. The coming of age of Lawrence as he throws off his childhood and his need to throw off his mother is engrossing, since you know it is based on real life and not a campy Sally Jessy Rapahel show. He struggles as we all struggle to make the right choices. What Lawrence does is let us in on the stuff that most novels don't let the reader know. The truth the character gives to the reader is unheard of today. Read this book and follow him from childhood of a mama's boy in a coal town in Norther England that love's, and love's, and looses only to truly love .
