4 out of 5 stars Strangely useful book, if you can sort through the clutter.......2007-10-10

I passed my PMP Exam, but I would not be thanking this book for it. Unlike other books, this book presents a lot of good material, but the material is strewn across several useless exercises and discussions. The workbook style is going to serve you no good purpose, as it is not meant to test your understanding and retention, rather it is geared towards pointing out how much of your real life understanding of the topic is different from the one the author is presenting. This gets exasperating, repetitive, and inane in a few pages. The text is not coherent, not easy to follow, has a lot of repetitive elements, and is poorly organized for an exam study guide.

Look past the crowd of words, and you will pick up some gems of information for the exam. I would suggest Head First PMP for those looking to "understand and retain" some of the key concepts for the exam, but I will recommend using combination of these books and PMBOK Guide for a good coverage.

The questions presented in this book are similar to those asked in the exam, and I'd rate the book high for just that reason.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Study Guide to pass the exam.......2007-10-08

Of course PMBOK is necessary to get the knowledge of PM best practice, but if you want to pass the PMP exam, Rita's book is a must, cuz PMBOK never tell you what you should be expecting in terms of exam questions.
After going through PMBOK and PMI's own training course, I read through Rita's PMP Exam Prep 3 times, practicing using the software included and the test questions at the end of each chapter, and passed the exam in first try.
This book's really cool. Not only for exam prep, it also highlighted areas of importance of each section so the information will be useful in real-life scenario as well. I highly recommended this book for everyone, esp those trying to pass the exam through self-study.

2 out of 5 stars Extremely Disappointed.......2007-10-07

I've read this and many other PMP study guides and here is my opinion. I passed the PMP exam but NOT due to this book. The main disappointment I have with this book (and a few others) is that it is organized according to the knowledge areas, whereas the PMP exam specifications by PMI are organized according to the process groups. Also it makes more sense to study project management by process groups because this approach is closer to the real life experience: initiating, planning, executing, controlling, and closing. If I need to look at the project management body of knowledge organized according to the knowledge areas, I would rather look at the PMBOK Guide. The exam study guides should follow the exam specifications, and should not be a mere re-run of the PMBOK Guide. Also, there is no mention of the exam objectives in any chapter. It reads like more or less a re-run of the PMBOK Guide without any consideration of the exam spec. Other drawbacks of the book are the following:
1.Questions are artificially difficult and not very close to the real exam questions.
2.Lots of empty spaces in the book
3.Lots of uncovered topics (or missing explanations) for which the book refers to the PMBOK Guide.
4.Lots of errors/typos
So, don't use it as a primary source for your preparation. It's ok as a secondary source.

5 out of 5 stars the only guide you'll need.......2007-09-26

Pros:
1 - very well organized.
2 - great exercises help eliminate memorization. (although some amout of memorization is required).
3 - Helped me understand "wrong" project management practices. My favourite is the planning process. I have actually built my own little PM planning check list.
4 - Rita does an excellent job mixing concepts with examples, making reading the material a lot easier.
5 - if you are into project management, you will easily relate to a lot of concepts.
6 - great end of chapter review questions. (Some quite tricky)

Cons
1 - shameless advertising of other products is a bit of a turn off.
2 - There were times when I disagreed with Rita's point of view.
3 - Sometimes the end of chapter questions test you for english comprehension instead of project management skills. For example project manager is working on completing risk identification versus project manager has completed risk identification. The intent here is to deliberately trip the student.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent !.......2007-09-21

As with all Rita's materials - excellent resource! You will have no excuses for not passing the PMP if you use this book.

Book Description

Imagine a world without eBay...unthinkable! How would you get that Farrah Fawcett poster, retired Beanie Baby, or first-edition pet rock? Handling over a gazillion (OK, we exaggerate--it's actually only 1 billion) page views each day, server-side Java makes eBay work.

Isn't it time you learned the latest (J2EE 1.4) versions of Servlets & JSPs? This book will get you way up to speed on the technology you'll know it so well, in fact, that you can pass the Sun Certified Web Component Developer (SCWCD) 1.4 exam. If that's what you want to do, that is. Maybe you don't care about the exam, but need to use Servlets & JSPs in your next project. You're working on a deadline. You're over the legal limit for caffeine. You can't waste your time with a book that makes sense only AFTER you're an expert (or worse one that puts you to sleep).

No problem. Head First Servlets and JSP's brain-friendly approach drives the knowledge straight into your head (without sharp instruments). You'll interact with servlets and JSPs in ways that help you learn quickly and deeply. It may not be The Da Vinci Code, but quickly see why so many reviewers call it "a page turner". Most importantly, this book will help you use what you learn. It won't get you through the exam only to have you forget everything the next day.

Learn to write servlets and JSPs, what makes the Container tick (and what ticks it off), how to use the new JSP Expression Language (EL), what you should NOT write in a JSP, how to write deployment descriptors, secure applications, and even use some server-side design patterns. Can't talk about Struts at a cocktail party? That'll change. You won't just pass the exam, you will truly understand this stuff, and you'll be able to put it to work right away.

This new exam is tough--much tougher than the previous version of the SCWCD. The authors of Head First Servlets and JSP know: they created it. (Not that it EVER occurred to them that if they made the exam really hard you'd have to buy a study guide to pass it.) The least they could do is give you a stimulating, fun way to pass the thing. If you're one of the thousands who used Head First EJB to pass the SCWCD exam, you know what to expect!

5 out of 5 stars This book is very exciting.......2007-10-06

This book is really very exciting. This book is very easy do read and to learn. I'm waiting to new version of this book and to new topics.

5 out of 5 stars Trust me, just buy it!! .......2007-09-22

I referred religiously to only this book for my study. It makes for a very interesting read. Most of the questions were based on this book. And I am happy to say that I scored 85% after just studying for a couple of hours for one month.
If you want to refer to just one book, this is it.

5 out of 5 stars Best book for SCWCD.......2007-09-13

This book is just too good. I had thought of writing this review as soon I had cleared my exam this July with 92%. My apologies for this delay.
If you would like to brush up your servlet/jsp/ tag libraries and appear for the SCWCD exam, then look no further. This is the book.
With Head First's unique style of presentation, I just loved reading this book.
I would say the book can improve more on examples and exercises. But whatever it has it really drives it in and makes your fundamentals solid.
The exams after each chapter are solid with good answers and very less errors or typos as found in other books of the same genre.
However the final exam in the book is much much tougher than the real one.

Enjoy
-Arijit

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2007-09-04

I started reading and i couldn't stop more. I'm a little suspect to say anything about this book because I'm really fan of this series.

What can i say about it ? If you really want pass the exam and don't want spend money with courses, use this book.

ps: sorry if i did some mistake, I'm Brazilian and my English is not the best thing i got.

I learned something in the first chapter. This is leading me by the hand, which is refreshing in a sea of new information. I am not even studying for the exam, but I chose this one over a couple of others and I'm glad I did!

About the Book

A PMP certification is more than just passing a test. It means that you have the knowledge to solve most common project problems, and proves that you know your stuff. Once you're certified, your projects are more likely to succeed because you have the skills and knowledge to make them successful. Not only that, it can mean a better job, more money, and greater respect from your peers.

But studying for a difficult four-hour exam on project management isn't easy, even for experienced project managers. You want to remember everything that you're learning about project management, but your brain is working against you! Your brain craves novelty, and most PMP certification prep books are anything but novel. When you keep putting down a boring book instead of studying, it's because your brain doesn't think the information in it is worth learning. Your brain has more important stuff to think about, like how to keep you alive and out of danger-and it doesn't think that failing the PMP exam qualifies as life-threatening!

So how do you trick your brain into thinking that your life does depend on learning everything you need to know to pass the PMP Exam? Head First PMP is the answer! Using the latest research in neurobiology, cognitive science and learning theory, Head First PMP has a visually rich format designed for the way your brain works-a multi-sensory experience that helps the material stick, not a text-heavy approach that puts you to sleep.

Head First PMP offers 100% coverage of The PMBOK® Guide principles and certification objectives in a way that's engaging, not tedious. This book helps you prepare for the PMP certification exam with a unique method that goes beyond answers to specific questions and makes you think about the big picture of project management. By putting project management concepts into context, you will be able to understand, remember, and apply them-not just on the exam, but also on the job.

With Head First PMP, you get the best of both worlds: a thorough and effective preparation guide for the PMP certification exam with hundreds of practice questions and exam strategies, along with puzzles, games, problems, exercises and the unique Head First approach that makes learning easy and entertaining. When you're done with Head First PMP, you'll know your stuff, you'll pass the exam, and you'll be able to bring everything you've learned to your job.

3 out of 5 stars One of many books you need to conquer PMP - not the only.......2007-10-10

I passed my PMP exam recently. In spite of my years of experience, I found that the exam needs a truckload of preparation! I started with PMBOK Guide, Rita Mulcahy, some others, and settled on HFP. The HFP is not the first book you should read, and certainly should not be the only book you read. Unlike the somewhat snide (and ineffective) Mulcahy book, this book would give you tons of useful mnemonics to remember stuff by. After reading this book, I was having a much easier time answering questions in other books, such as Mulcahy's.

The PMP examination is not for the faint of heart. At the minimum, you should know the PMBOK Guide by rote (esp. the I-TT-O, Glossary, and the formulae). You need to supplement that knowledge using other books. These are the list of books I found useful (in no particular order):
0. PMBOK Guide
1. HF PMP
2. Mulcahy
3. Kim Heldman
4. Andy Crowe

Unfortunately, HF PMP does leave out many vital topics. This will hurt you in the exam, if you have not covered it elsewhere (e.g. Calculating CPPC and FPIP using numbers, GERT, etc., amongst many other examples). But for the topics covered, you will have a strong help from this book in retaining that information!

I would strongly encourage the authors to consider revising the book and adding the missing topics - given the treatment of topics from the authors. Add a glossary of terms that may be referenced in the PMP Exam, even though these are not covered in detail in the book (with a ref.). It will be worth the price you'd pay for such a book!

1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed.......2007-10-07

I've read this and many other PMP study guides and here is my opinion. I passed the PMP exam but NOT due to this book. The main disappointment I have with this book (and a few others) is that it is organized according to the knowledge areas, whereas the PMP exam specifications by PMI are organized according to the process groups. It reads like more or less a re-run of the PMBOK Guide without any consideration of the exam spec. Other drawbacks of the book are the following:
1. Questions are not close to the real exam questions.
2. The emphasis is on the "fun" not on explaining the topic...so the coverage of many topics is very shallow.
3. At best, the book is a collection of lecture notes without any lecturer explaining them.
4. Oversimplification of serious knowledge often leads to inaccuracies. This book even goes beyond over-simplification in search of humor. It's hard to draw the line between humor and inaccuracies.
If you think project management (or PMP) is a joke, this book is for you. If you believe project management is a serious business, stay away from this book...it has the potential to contaminate your project management knowledge.

So, don't use it as a primary source for your preparation. It's ok as a secondary source, perhaps...

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book with great content!.......2007-09-12

Hi, I passed the PMP exam on Sep 6'07 and used HF PMP as part of my preparations. I must confess anything that PMBOK covers is being covered by this book. But what is more interesting is the ease with which all concepts are explained and can be understood. This book goes in depth to make you understand the finer points in PMBOK and that is one big reason to buy it. Not forgetting the presentation of this book which makes it so much enjoyable to read and pass the exam.

There are questions at the end of each chapter which are in line with the real exam and tests your understanding of concepts.

All in all a great book for preparation and a must have for anyone appearing for the exam. Cheers!

Neeraj , PMP

5 out of 5 stars A must for PMP Certification preparation and beyond.......2007-08-30

"Head First PMP" is an absolute must for anyone who would like to prepare for PMP certification. It is well written, covering all the topics required for PMP. There are a lot of books available for preparation of the certification, but Head First PMP stands out from all of them. It is easy to read, understand, and believe me, it would help you make a great deal of progress in your understanding and study of the material. Even after certification, Head First PMP will serve you as a quick and easy reference for your project management questions. I would definitely recommend this to all.

5 out of 5 stars Head First PMP Defines a New Oxymoron: Engaging Textbook.......2007-08-22

In preparation for the test, I recently spent some extended time in the bookstore comparing options to help my studies. The local bookseller I visited unfortunately didn't have the Head First book that I had heard so much about, so I ended up with a another title that was also highly recommended on Amazon. After bringing the other book home, I read two chapters and realized I was thinking about everything other than what I was reading. I decided I needed a different route if I planned to stay awake during my preparations for the exam and decided to try to source a copy of the Head First guide instead.

I found a copy of the Head First PMP title at another bookshop and settled in for what I thought was going to be another futile attempt at cramming this information into the old gray matter. However, much to my surprise, I found myself *engaged* in the content, and moreover, I was truly *learning* it! The book's approach ensures understanding of the content through thought and exercises - not reading lots of text and hoping some of it sticks long enough to pass the test.

If you haven't seen what makes the book different, definitely take a moment to visit the book's website (http://www.headfirstlabs.com/pmp) to see if this writing style is a fit for you. As another reviewer mentioned, this book definitely has a quirky feel to it (e.g. a fireside chat between the scope management plan and the project scope statement as one example) that may not be right for everyone, but for the rest of us, Fireside chats, crossword puzzles and Cows Gone Wild is half of what makes the book so engaging.

Don't let the fun use of graphics and informal style of the book fool you into doubting its usefulness or accuracy. While I can't guarantee that you'll pass the exam by reading this book, I will say that when you use the book as outlined in the book's introduction, the Head First PMP should absolutely increase your knowledge of the things PMI deems important for the exam without torturing yourself in the process.

Finally, for those that may be wondering why you should take my word on the use of this book, I passed the exam by a good margin yesterday. I found that on at least 25-30 questions, I would not have gotten the question correct had it not been for something I read in the Head First PMP book over the two days prior to the test.

Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Good but..........2007-07-20

This is a good book but not great. I prefer PMP Flashcard Quicklet by Paul Sanghera, which is very self contained and comprehensive. This book by Rita has quite a few errors and too many references to Rita's other books (not self contained)...as a second flashcard book, it's fine.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the purchase, but a bit strange in execution.......2007-07-03

This review is for the audio cd flashcards. I am a recent PMP, and this was one of the tools that I used to pass the certification exam. For the price, this is a worthwhile purchase for those that will be studying for the exam and will spend a lot of time in the car.

At the beginning of the first disk, the explanation states that the cds should not be transferred to any device, which sounds like it includes transferring to MP3 players. There is no encoding restriction to prevent you from treating this like a normal cd and saving it to your hard drive or MP3 player, but in this day and age, it's a strange thing to hear. It's unclear if that's actually the intent, but it certainly comes across that way.

Rita tries to break up the monotony by telling anecdotes and tips at the beginning of each section, but this gets tedious quickly. Some of her jokes fall flat, and it becomes excruciating upon repeated plays. In addition, some of this is straight from her PMP Exam Prep book.

The bulk of the cds is recorded by a voice actor has chapters divided up by the knowledge area. The voice actor asks a question, and then there is a brief pause so the listener can attempt to come up with the proper answer. The pause is followed by the answer...most of the time. Some questions are asked, but in some cases the voice actor states that the answer is too long to be repeated, which just comes across as disruptive to the flow of learning.

In this day and age, it's bizarre to hear that the audio recordings can't ethically be allowed on a portable media device. The CDs could benefit from having some of the conversational fat cut out of them, and it would be good to hear answers to all of the questions posed. That having been said, this is a worthwhile purchase if you will be studying for certification and will be in a place to hear the cds. It's a fairly inexpensive study aid, and it certainly helped me earn my certification.

This product is not worthy of your money....

These are just global review of general topics. If you read the book, you won't need these. If you need these, you won't pass the test. Don't fall into Rita's clever web of buying her stuff...which is repackaged material. It's all in the book....

I would not have bought this item. This is not what I expected.

2 out of 5 stars Could be improved..........2007-08-22

I honestly found this book to not be very helpful. Instead of simply reviewing math and giving a lot of practice problems, Princeton Review wants you to learn new tips and tricks to get the right answer. (Which, in my opinion, is much harder than familiarizing yourself with concepts you already know.) The verbal review is decent, but the vocabulary list is terrible; they define words you may or may not know using lengthy definitions that include other words you may or may not know, instead of using simple language. After using this book to study for several weeks, my scores on the practice tests had not improved. (It is a very good thing I had to wind up rescheduling my test to a later date due to other reasons, because this was simply not effective preparation.)

I have the Kaplan Vocabulary Book and Barron's Passkey to the GRE as well. I am also going to purchase some materials to practice with, but would not choose Princeton Review again. For some people, this book might be a good way to go, especially if your math skills are not the best. For me, however, it was not worth the money or the time spent in attempting to study from this book.

5 out of 5 stars It's a good start!.......2007-07-02

If you don't know how to start to GRE, this is a good book. However, you should complement this book with a tougher one in order to score closer to 800. Barron's book was my complement.

1 out of 5 stars Don't even waste the time and money for it.......2007-03-21

I have bought this book and was horrible, this is the worst book of GRE that i have ever seen. I also have the Cracking GRE 2002 and there is no difference between 2002 and 2007 edition, even examples and sample math and verbal questions are the same.
I have taken online 4 full length tests and those tests were not the the real predictor of my actual score. So I recommend potential buyers to avoid this book from their mind.
Kaplan and Barron's are the best materials from which you can really benefit.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for GRE.......2007-03-20

I went to Kaplan live lectures and paid about $1350! It was totally waste of time and money. This book has a way of showing you the key points for the exam and their way of attacking math problems are so simple and easy to follow. I would recommmend for those who want to study for GRE.

2 out of 5 stars meh, not sure I'd buy it again.......2007-01-22

I guess this wasn't too bad, but I wish they'd focused a little more on teaching some of the math concepts instead of showing how to plug values to get the answer. Like they admit, none of the math is advanced, so just some reminding of what we learned in jr. high would seem more appropriate than the endless number plugging. The GRE writers write questions that make plugging difficult, to see if you can reason the solution through knowing a little math. The plugging takes more time and leaves more room for error, in my opinion, than just learning how to solve the problem.

I also think their sample tests were not great samples. They had typos and re-used charts between tests. They were not very good predictors of my actual result. I took the four on-line sample tests, and the two from PowerPrep and the actual GRE all in 2 days. Here are my scores:

Princeton Review sample tests:
Quant (4 tests): 670, 610, 650, 690
Verbal: 650, 750, 730, 510

PowerPrep sample tests:
Quant: 720, 700
Verbal: 640, 690

My actual scores: quant 710, verbal 640

Also, in their online sample tests, some of the wording is a bit flippant and many of the verbal questions are far too ambiguous to be representative of real GRE questions. The flippant parts are probably supposed to be light and humorous, but I found it a little offensive to have each verbal 'explanation' include the sentence "Learn your vocabulary!" It implied that anyone who had studied or had a decent vocabulary would KNOW the answer. Not very professional, in my opinion.

PowerPrep (free download from [...]) was better, in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars I passed, my colleagues passed, you will pass too!.......2007-01-31

I've been wanting to write my review of this book for a few weeks not though time is always of the essence. After reading the last review, it is clear that he never read Dr. Silverstein's book! I easily passed my exam using only Laughing Your Way to Passing the Pediatric Boards, and studying PREP questions. I read through this book with ease once, studied PREP, then reread this text again and it all came together. I found questions on the exam that I swear could have come directly from the case studies found within. Thanks Dr. Silverstein! I will recommend this study series to anyone!

1 out of 5 stars A couple of improvements over the earlier edition, but still WORTHLESS.......2007-01-25

I was saddened to see a new edition of this book out on the market to waste the studying time and effort of a new crop of peds residents, but here it is. I flipped thorugh it and found it essentially no better than the terrible earlier version(s). Distracting. Poorly researched. Laden with typographical errors. It manages to provide chunks of useless info in some topics while still missing key points in others. Quite a feat! Save your money.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for the peds boards!.......2007-01-11

Of note, I did not have the 2006 edition of this book, I had the older black one. but i heard the new one is even better so..

I waited to write this review until I knew whether I passed the boards. Well, if that's your goal, this is definitely the book for you. I am NOT a good test taker, and needed a concise and accurate review to study for the boards in the midst of taking care of a 10 month old and starting a whole new residency in anesthesia. I did PREP questions when i had downtime in the operating room and studied this book for about 30 minutes each night...basically read it cover to cover at least six or seven times. No other reference materials used.

I am VERY glad I did. As soon as the exam was over, I knew that my study strategy had worked. this book encompasses all of the major material that you need to know to pass this exam in addition to giving you essential pearls for all those crazy zebras that you will come across as well. Thanks to good pnemonics and pictorials, I actually got a couple questions right about things like Hallerman-Streiff Syndrome and supravalvular aortic stenosis and Williams sydrome, things i never would have gotten if I had used another reference book.

It was key to have one book to study intensively that was a good read and easy to memorize facts with. So bottom line, get this book! Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars the "Bible" for passing your boards.......2006-11-11

Every single person who's taken the pediatric boards before me recommended this book, as the one thing to buy that would be worth my money. At nearly $100, I hesitated for awhile. But in the last 2-months or so before boards, I realized I needed an easy, quick-read summary of everything I hadn't learned yet.

This format worked fabulously. It does have everything - all the metabolic, developmental, rare diseases that are such a pain to memorize. They use pneumonics (some of which are better than others) to try to help you remember. Most of all I was glad to have all the information together in one place. Later I compared it to friends' other review books and didn't think anything was missing at all.

My advice to anyone taking peds boards in the coming year:
1. Unfortunately peds is full of such rare things, that no matter how much you saw during residency, you did not see everything that will be on the boards. The test (I'm sorry to say) is hard. STUDY!

2. Do review questions - the AAP's PREP questions will truly prep you for this marathon of a test.

3. Get a comprehensive review book - I really recommend Laughing your Way through the Boards. It will not fail you.

Good luck to all!!

5 out of 5 stars sufficient for passing exam.......2007-09-20

I had purchased a couple other exam prep resources besides this particular one, but I decided in the end to only rely on Rita's CAPM prep book. Yes, I did read the PMBOK and had class training on the PMP concepts (quite some time ago), so I already had a good understanding of the project management concepts, but this book hit the mark 100% on how the CAPM exam was going to approach the questioning. I took the CAPM and passed it on the first try after a few days of cramming with her book. I could not have done it by prioritizing according to the contents of the PMBOK materials - her book really did focus on the what the exam focused on. What the exam emphasizes and what one thinks might be emphasized, due to only reading the PMBOK, are completely different animals.

4 out of 5 stars The PMBOK Guide in Plain English.......2007-09-09

Anyone who's flicked through a chapter of the Guide to the Project Managmeent Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) for the first time will find their eyes glazing over - it's quite hard going! This book is a good way to make sense of the Guide in preparation for the CAPM exam. I would recommend reading the chapters in this book to get an overview of a topic, before reading the corresponding topic in the PMBOK Guide for greater detail.

5 out of 5 stars Great CAPM prep material.......2007-03-03

Even if it is not recommended to use only one training and study material to apply to any of the PMI's exams, this is really a complete and usefull book. It covers all the Knowledge areas, processes, tool and techniques needed not only to present the exam, but also to help you in your Project Management career. It has some exercises along the way, assestment tools, and a set of exam simulation questions.
It really gets you up to speed to do the CAPM exam, and it is the latest revised version, based on the PMBOK 3rd edition.
I recommend to use this along Rita's own exam simulation software, and some other books, like PMP in Depth (from Paul Sanghera), wich is also great, and reading the PMBOK.

5 out of 5 stars Excellet Book for Teaching Citizenship.......2005-02-01

As a volunteer who teaches citizenship, I can say that this book, and its accompanying teacher's guide, is a good teaching tool for Citizenship for the group of students at which it is aimed - the low-beginning learner, who does not have great English skills.

Yes, anyone can go to the USCIS (formerly INS) website and get the 100 history and civics questions to study, as another reviewer noted. That person can even download from the USCIS the sample dication sentences, and the PDF documents (of 100 plus pages) that contain the USCIS's study guides on both American History and Civics. And I agree that's all that the average, college educated (perhaps high school educated) immigrant needs.

But that is NOT an option for my students, who are smart but who have little or no educational backgroun in American history, and whose English skills are not the best. Those students don't know what World War II was (and look at those words and say "World War Eleven" because they are not familiar with Roman numerals). Those students don't know what the word "emancipation" means, or what the word "preamble" means. I have had students who don't know what the word "slave" or "king" means.

Even the more motivated students I have had who have obtained the lists and memorized the questions by rote and given the correct answers to the questions have asked me over and over "what does that mean?"

This book does an excellent job of boiling the information behind the 100 questions down to the basics. Its pictures may seem juvenile, but that's not the point - the point is that the book brings out the basic information, and explains it so that the student can make sense of the question, and thus the answer. And understanding the question and answer is far better, in my opinion, than just learning things by rote.

These students are not political science majors, as another reviewer has noted. So just explaining the words "Electoral College", is a challenge. Nor is this the place to engage in an anthropological debate about where the Native Americans came from and quibble about whether they were actually the first "Settlers" or "Inhabitants" (although I understand there is scholarship to support the notion thattheir ancestors likely migrated over the Siberian land bridge and therefore could be called "settlers", it doesn't explain all the Viking lore we have here in Minnesota;-).

The point is to give these students a fair shot at becoming citizens. The point is to help them try to understand as much as possible the knowledge they are being asked to demonstrate during their face to face, potentially nerve wracking interview with "The Government Of The United States." Like all students forced to learn an unknown subject to achieve a goal, some will become interested enough in the subject to pursue its deeper meanings, and contradictions, later. Others will not (how many born Americans know who wrote the Declaration of Independence, much less what it really SAID?

This is an excellent book that gives people who have little or no background in American history and government, and not so great English skills a good chance at learning, and understanding, at least the basics of the topic. That's all it claims to do, so any other objection to it beyond that listing is really unfair.

1 out of 5 stars Do not get this book! It's unnecessary!.......2002-05-14

I just took my citizenship test today; this book was not helpful at all!

Instead, go to the INS site and download the 100 questions which are listed as sample questions.

These are the same questions you'll be asked. Your interviewer will ask you 10 questions from that list. So, just prepare for those 100 questions and you'll do fine.

Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read and right to the point........1999-09-17

I have been in the field of ESL for almost 20 years now. Although I have never taught a citizenship class, civic education has been an integral part of all my ESL courses in the U.S. It had been always a problem for me to find the "right" texts for my beginning level students until this book came along. The contextual connection this book makes between illustrations and key concepts/terms of the U.S. history and government has broken new ground for civic education in the ESL setting, particularly for beginners.

The reflection I have of my own classes and my observation of others' has convinced me that sometimes our classes, for whatever reason, become occasions exhibiting what we know about a subject rather than an opportunity for students to learn what they need about a subject. This book, simple as it may look to civic scholars, not only reminds me of what my students need, but also helps me show what some abstract concepts are such as religion, freedom, government, etc. Less well-educated new immigrants are no Political Science majors. This book, along with its cassettes and self-study materials, offers what they need to pass the citizenship test. In fact, I sometimes wonder whether the author is a recent immigrant herself. How else could she have known so precisely what new immigrants would need in their civic education?!

To the ESL teachers interested in using civic education materials in their classes, I would say, Give this book a try. To recent immigrants struggling with English language and basic knowlege of the U.S. government, I would also say, Give this book a try. It may not help you chitchat with a sales clerk in the mall, but will certainly help you impress the INS interviewing officials.

See you at your swear-in ceremony!

I got my PSI book in record time. I actually received the PSI book days before I expected to get it. The book was in excellent shape. I am very satisfied with the book and amazon.

4 out of 5 stars A-1 Books.......2006-08-08

Great book, I had to use a friends book to prepare for my upcoming exam. I order this book via Amazon with sale via A-1 Books. Accordingly it was indicated as "in stock" and would be shipped within 2 days. I ordered the book on July 29th, received a e-mail from A-1 a week later telling me they are out-of-stock on this item and they expect it to be in stock in 3 days and I should expect delivery by the 17th, which is much too late. I considered what A-1 did to be false advertising, baiting and switching to steer me away from other vendors who had the book for sale and ready to ship. They knew they didn't have the book in stock, why didn't they update their Amazon inventory listing. It should be crossed referenced/verified before a customer's credit card is charged. Amazon is partially to blame for not monitoring the vendors they represent; and giving customer false expected ship dates. I will never order anything again from A-1 or Amazon. They didn't even have the common decency to offer me free overnight shipping for their mistake. That's not good customer service at all!!

I took the PSI Affiliate Broker exam for the first time and passed. This is a great book to review prior to taking the exam. I had a great teacher for pre-licensed 1 & 2 courses. However, I used the PSI book as a review. I took the exams in the PSI book which help me identify with my weak areas. I recommend this book for anyone who is about to take the PSI Affiliate Broker exam. Good Luck!!

Book Description

The Message Passing Interface (MPI) specification is widely used for solving significant scientific and engineering problems on parallel computers. There exist more than a dozen implementations on computer platforms ranging from IBM SP-2 supercomputers to clusters of PCs running Windows NT or Linux ("Beowulf" machines). The initial MPI Standard document, MPI-1, was recently updated by the MPI Forum. The new version, MPI-2, contains both significant enhancements to the existing MPI core and new features.

Using MPI is a completely up-to-date version of the authors' 1994 introduction to the core functions of MPI. It adds material on the new C++ and Fortran 90 bindings for MPI throughout the book. It contains greater discussion of datatype extents, the most frequently misunderstood feature of MPI-1, as well as material on the new extensions to basic MPI functionality added by the MPI-2 Forum in the area of MPI datatypes and collective operations.

Using MPI-2 covers the new extensions to basic MPI. These include parallel I/O, remote memory access operations, and dynamic process management. The volume also includes material on tuning MPI applications for high performance on modern MPI implementations.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Thorough coverage of MPI programming in Fortran, C, and C++.......2006-09-14

This book is an excellent introduction to programming with the MPI. It gradually introduces concepts from the simple to the complex. This is done with examples that illustrate the use of different techniques. The examples include the code to implement them. The programming examples alternate between Fortran 90, C, and C++. However, after giving the example in one language, the bindings for the MPI functions in the other two languages are presented. In addition, the programming examples in either language are easily understood. Although my first choice of programming language is Fortran (and I have very basic knowledge or C), I was able to follow the examples in C and C++ and to write their equivalents in Fortran so I could test them on our computers.

4 out of 5 stars good reference but short on C examples.......2000-04-05

I liked the reference as an introduction to MPI, but it switched between fortran and C so often that I spent a fair amount of my time just trying to interpret the code samples and synchronize to the syntax of the language they were using. You shouldnt have that problem if you have used Fortran in the last ten years but i havnt touched it since college. You have to be able to work with both languages though because many of the key concepts are only demonstrated in one language. Also the examples were usaully spread out into mini snipets as opposed to a larger block that might show a more complete picture.
