The Christmas Box Collection: The Christmas Box Timepiece The Letter
ASIN: 0743428706 |
Amazon.com
Michael Keddington and Faye Murrow are young lovers who marry on the eve of Faye's departure for medical school. While the bonds of matrimony and faith pull them together, the troubles of the real world do sunder: disapproving parents, work demands, distance, death, and an unplanned pregnancy. As in his earlier novel, The Christmas Box, nostalgia and emotion run unchecked, to the delight of most readers.
This is not the great American novel, but Evans never pretends that it is, he only hopes that you "might find the message of this story meaningful and applicable to your own life." If that is the standard, most readers should be satisfied.--Nancy R.E. O'Brien
Book Description
This is the love story of Michael Keddington and Faye Murrow, a love story that takes place not in seclusion but in the real world, with the challenges that all lovers must face. No relationship is an island: There are threads that bind us all and pull at our lives -- the demands of family, of friends, of work, and social obligation. And there are times that the pull of those threads becomes greater than the strength of the relationship. In these times, no matter how much two people love each other, a relationship must grow strong or be torn apart.
The Carousel is about what happens when life doesn't turn out the way that we planned. Beyond a love story, it is about faith, loyalty, and sacrifice.
My hope is that you, and those with whom you share this book, might find the message of this story meaningful and applicable to your own life.
And that in some way you might feel changed.
Sincerely,
Richard Paul Evans

Continuing on with a Good Story.......2006-11-28
"The Locket" story is continuing on with the same characters. Michael and Faye's romantic relationship continues. This book is sentimental, sad, and touching. This is a wonderful book.
Sweet Love Story.......2006-08-09
The ups and downs of love and tragedy for a young college couple. Good portrayal of the doubts and missteps taken in response to life events and the decisions and emotions which tend to keep people on the right track, even when faced with adversity. An enjoyable read with a happyily-ever-after ending.
timeless message.......2006-01-08
This is the first Evans book I read. I fell in love with his writing immediately. I love his down to earth style and his ability to write a wonderful romance based on true love, not lust. If you are tired of having to skip over porn while reading a romance novel, check out this one. I recommend you start with the first in this series, The Locket. The main characters Michael, Faye, and Ester are easy to fall in love with. This book certainly doesn't sugar coat life. It is very frank about the unfairness of life, but it is not super depressing and the message is full of hope.
This book would appeal to both males and females. I think anyone who enjoys a love story, whether they are 14 or 80 years old, would love this series.
good.......2003-12-03
Though I must admit the story was poignant and I agree that life is like a carousel at times, it left me unsatisfied... This is the first book I've read of Evans, and he's a good author, but at times I was left hanging and wondering...it felt like a soap opera episode... It's a decent read, though, and the publishing company did a really good job designing his books, so don't be surpised if you're drawn to this book.
Ups and Downs.......2003-03-26
Michael and Faye's story began in another book and continued in this one is one that promises lasting love and emotion....hope even in the event of adversity......
Maybe it is idealistic for me to feel that "love conquers all" but having been married to my first and only husband for nearly thirty years and two children and two grandchildren, I KNOW that love does conquer all and that no matter what happens you can get past it and continue to live and be happy!!!

Add it to your carousel book collection!.......2005-12-08
Charlotte Dinger's Art of the Carousel is a must have for any enthusiasts carousel book collection. This book features chapters about all the major carousel artists/carvers and great photographic examples of each carvers style.
There is also a chapter about restoring and collecting these magnificant animals. This book is very similar to "Painted Ponies" by William Manns/Marianne Stevens. Included is a census of operating carousels. Since the book was written in the mid 1980s, many of the carousels that are listed in the census have been long gone. For an updated censue check the National Carousel Association.
Quoted from the book's dust jacket.......2005-09-04
ART OF THE CAROUSEL, lavishly illustrated in full color with over 400 photographs, is a complete guide for collectors, museums and galleries, as well as a delightful book for those who simply enjoy the beauty and nostalgia of the carousel.
The author traces the development of carousel art by describing style variations and identifiable features of carousel animals produced by the major American carving companies. Important considerations in evaluating carousel figures are defined, as well as characteristics that distinguish European and Mexican animals from the more valued carvings.
In addition, the book includes descriptions and illustrations of restoration techniques, practical advice on buying, shipping, and insuring carousel animals, and a census of operating carousels in the United States and Canada.
A must for the carousel lover.......2002-05-15
There are two books that any carousel collector or would-be collector must have. Dinger's "Art of the Carousel" and Manns' "Painted Ponies". These are simply the most complete of the carousel reference books. Bruce W. Zubee - Webmaster - [URL]
the best I've seen or read........2002-03-27
The book Art of the Carousel is the best I've read. It gives a full history and it is beautifully illustrated. I showed it to a co-worker and she had to have one to put on their coffee table for all to view. You won't be sorry!
Best.......2000-03-27
This book is just a fun with the education about the carousels! This'll tell you much about the carousels ! Charlotte is a great author, and has a good sense of understanding people's psycology. You'll have fun with this book !

Sadly not a Rosamunde Pilcher hit.......2006-11-18
I just finished this book, and when I had read the last line, I wondered what had happened to Rosamunde Pilcher. Further--where is the meat? I checked the copyright date--1982. Her stride with the Shell Seekers hit in 1987, followed by September in 1990, Coming Home in 1995, and Winter Solstice in 2000. Sadly, I think I was reading before she became that marvelous storyteller. Everyone has to start, and this book foreshadows the descriptions and storylines she grows to entertwine so wonderfully. But not in this book. The characters are but briefly drawn, but never drew me in like the others above. I never got a picture of Cornwall or Penmarron as the other books had. I finished it as a task that needed finishing, not with the "I have to see what happens" and then, "oh, no, it's over" that her masterpieces gave me.
As a lover of Ms. Pilcher's work, I cannot recommend this one. If I had read this one first, I would never have picked up those other wonderful stories of hers. The reviews written are dismal as well...it is not "satisfying," "captivating," nor "an unforgettable journey." I actually want to forget this one. Sorry, Rosamunde. I do love your other work. I think this is a story that happened on the way to becoming a wonderful writer. Note the copyright dates is my word of advice to Pilcher readers. And if this was your first with her--go to one of the above mentioned!
Saddly disappointed.......2006-07-21
I don~t know if this is Rosamund Pilcher~s first book or what, but I have to say that I was disappointed by it.
I picked it up at the library and when I opened the first page sitting in my favorite chair in my living room I was filled with anticipation...thinking I would have the same experience with this particular Pilcher book that I have had with all the others that I~ve read. Ahh, not to be. I found all of the characters lacking in development, whiny, and just not likable at all, with the exception of Charlotte. The description of the Cornish countryside wasn~t up to par with The Empty House and Coming Home, though nothing can ever compare to Coming Home. I had a hard time visualizing Phoebes house and her garden. I didn~t even get a full picture of Lily Tonkins. To be honest, I didn~t even like the characters names.
If you have never read a Pilcher book before, do not start with this one. If you do, I think you may never want to read another.
tis' ok........2006-03-06
I read this with an open mind. The reason I picked it up is because I was quite taken in by her son's first two books. In some of the reviews for his novels, I saw that others were saying that his books did not compare favorably to his mothers. Well, after finnally plodding through this 'Carousel' book, I have to disagree on the outset. Pilcher is a pretty good author. Sort of like a modern EM Forrester. This is not what I would call a romance. Or if you were to classify it as such, I would say that this is more of a literary romance. I was constantly reminded of the author Stegner. Both Stegner and Pilcher weave around similar topics and subject matters. But where I would consider Stegner one of the 20th centuries great authors, Pilcher is sort of stale in comparison. Her story unfolds like Pilcher is on a train ride, passing one town after another and unloading the plot like it were baggage that she had to drop off at each next town. This is a very linear book. From start to finish it heads in a straight line towards its destination and seldom pauses to contemplate or add nuance to the narrative.
Ah, I am being a little hard on Pilcher, I will read her again. This was a very readable book and was not off-putting in any overt manner.
--Get away to Cornwall for a few hours--.......2005-05-28
Rosamunde Pilcher is one of the most reliable authors that I read. She always delivers an entertaining story. THE CAROUSEL takes place in Cornwall, a spot that this author writes about with a great deal of enthusiasm and comfort.
Prue Shackleton at the age of twenty-three, is an attractive and responsible young woman. Her mother feels that its time for her to settle down. Prue isn't sure about that even though there is a kind and wholesome Scotsman who is hoping to marry her. In her heart she knows that he's not the man she wants to spend her life with. On the eve of a visit to meet his parents in Scotland, Pure hears that her favorite aunt has just broken her arm and she rushes to Cornwall to help her.
On the train to Cornwall, Prue becomes acquainted with a sad little girl who is going to visit her grandmother. In Cornwall, she also meets Daniel Cassens, a well-known artist who she finds quite attractive. What follows is a story that involves everyone that I've mentioned and it all takes place in beautiful Cornwall.
For complete enjoyment and relaxation all that's needed is a Pilcher book and a cup of Earl Grey. I believe that I've now read all of Pilcher's stories, hopefully she'll write a few more!
Predictable and Unremarkable.......2001-05-31
Having read The Shell Seekers before I read The Carousel, I was expecting a great deal more from this book than was delivered. It is your basic, everyday love story that is so madly predictable that you will find yourself yearning for something original to read. The story lacks depth and warmth; just when one gets to know and enjoy the characters, the story ends.
I wished for a great deal more background information about the characters while reading this book; The Shell Seekers told richly layered stories about the personal histories of its characters, in The Carousel, one must be content with a mere skimming of the surface of its characters and their lives.
If you are looking for a simple, short and uncomplicated 'Danielle Steel' sort of read, then this book is the one for you. Don't bother with it if you loved The Shell Seekers and are looking to recapture the magic it held. Personally, I was embarrassed for Rosamunde Pilcher; her publishers must have been shocked and disappointed in her. The Carousel is far below the quality one expects of the author, and was a very poor attempt at literature on her part.

Book Description
Love were one of the legendary bands of the late '60s U.S. West Coast scene. Their masterpiece Forever Changes still regularly appears in critics' polls of top albums, while a new line up of the band has recently toured to mass acclaim.
Michael Stuart-Ware was Love's drummer and shares his inside perspective on the band's recording and performing career, and tells how drugs and egos thwarted the potential of one of the great groups of the burgeoning psychedelic era.
Customer Reviews:
Was Arthur Lee Love?.......2007-09-24
This book is an interesting first person perspective on the great band Love durings its heyday in the mid-60s. The author joined the group in time to play on Da Capo and Forever Changes, two of the greatest albums ever recorded. You get the highs and the lows, the ups and the downs of a band that refused to tour to support its music, and when it did tour, usually wound up late for gigs or without one member of the band on stage. The picture of Arthur Lee that emerges is most probably accurate, but not pretty. No one can question his musical ability as a singer and a songwriter, but as a bandleader, he clearly needed some direction. Drugs played an inevitable part in the demise of the band, as it did with so many others. The theme that runs through the book is whether or not Love was Arthur Lee or the combination of musicians who worked together to make such wonderful music. In the end, the answer is probably "yes", Arthur Lee was Love. Certainly, with his passing, the band has ceased to exist. I enjoyed the book and the first hand accounts of the life and times of one of my favorite rock combos. Be prepared for the all too well known sad ending, although Michael Stuart-Ware seems to have made a good life for himself after music.
laufdogpro.......2006-07-24
I was very sceptical when I first started the book, but as I continued to read it I found that it had a real sincerity about it. Considering is was written by Michael, drummer for love, it was a candid and warm reflection of the L.A. music scene. It talked about restaurants, clubs and even supermarkets in Los Angeles. An enjoyable read for me that I decided to read it again.
Rock group Love's drummer shares insights.......2006-04-13
Michael Stuart-Ware is drummer on two of Love's albums and here shares his insights on the rock group in a coverage of the band's recording and performing career. Love's frontman Arthur Lee has enjoyed much limelight but the group was far more than just his backup group: there were many incarnations and powerful musicians in the band, which Stuart-Ware explores in chapters packed with 'you are there' first-person experiences. LOVE: BEHIND THE SCENES ON THE PEGESUS CAROUSEL WITH THE LEGENDARY ROCK GROUP LOVE is a lively survey of a long-lasting, popular rock group which has played for decades.
Music business illusions.......2006-03-12
When I was about fifteen, I picked up the first love album. The picture of the band standing under a chimney with only the logo LOVE on the cover enthralled me and I had to have it. I have been a Love fan ever since. Michael Stuart-Ware does a very good job at exposing why Love never became a super group like the Rolling Stones or the Doors even though Love could have easily been more popular than both those groups if Arthur Lee hadn't shot the band in the foot. My only criticism of the book is the slight undercurrent of bitterness (maybe my imagination) about what could have been. Mr. Stuart-Ware could have made a career in music in spite of Love, but he chose not to. It was probably a good move for him to leave the music business and I'm glad he has given the world of an insider's look at an truly extraordinary band.
Sirens and Sea-Monsters Glimpsed Through the Glass Bottom of a Submarine.......2005-08-07
There isn't much I can say about this fabulous book that hasn't already been said by other reviewers here. Stuart-Ware is an exceptional storyteller, and though as one reader noted, his work lacks the polish of a professional writer's, I would read an exceptionally engrossing tale such as this one over a well-written doorstopper any day. And yes, I wish he had discussed the recording of *Forever Changes* in much greater detail, but what might be cited as a flaw in this instance points to a much greater overall virtue: this book leaves you wanting more, not because it isn't satisfying, but precisely because it is. As I see it, he could have written a book twice this long and, assuming it was as engrossing as what we see in *Pegasus Carousel*, it wouldn't take any longer to read because it would be that enthralling.
One hardly need be a Love fan to enjoy this memoir. Of course it helps, but on a much larger level, this book is for anyone who loves rock music and is fascinated by both the creativity of great musicians and their tendency toward dissipation. Likewise it's for anyone who appreciates modern American popular culture, because it gives a street-level view of a seminal time and place in the creation of that culture: the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles during the halcyon years 1965-68.
And if one should only discover *Forever Changes*, and Love's music in general, after reading this book, then not only is a great reward in store--I think FC is a very serious contender for the title "greatest rock album of all time"--but so is a great shock. To read Stuart-Ware's book is like looking into the kitchen of a five-star restaurant and seeing the piles of grease-laden dishes, the cook with a cigarette dangling from his mouth as he stands over the stove, the rats gnawing around the trash can out back--and then, when you enter the dining room, everything is all polish and pressed linen. In other words, to hear the breathtaking brilliance that is *Forever Changes,* and then to contrast that with the atmosphere of infighting, jealousy, laziness, and dangerous drug use that Stuart-Ware portrays, is to experience cognitive dissonance of a high order. And yet ultimately, of course, these revelations of self-undermining behavior only make the achievement that was FC all the more impressive.
With a book like this--especially given the great number of famous names that make cameos here, and the many extraordinary stories--there's always somebody who is going to question its veracity. Yet Stuart-Ware's account has an unmistakable ring of truth, and not just because of the extraordinarily evocative details it contains. Of greater importance is the author's attitude--his humility and his clear-headed perspective. He does not seek to make himself seem more important than he was, he has no axe to grind, and he's not reliving some mythical past that the rest of his life never equaled. In fact, as he makes clear in the preface, the really important things in his life are the ones that happened after his brief stint in the limelight. As for his portrayal of Arthur Lee, I think Stuart-Ware shows an impressive command over the age-old writers' dictum, "Show, don't tell": he never tells you what to think about this extremely troubled, enigmatic genius, but the portrait is clear enough anyway.
All in all, an extraordinary and enormously entertaining book whose greatest flaw is that it had to have an end.

Very nice photos. Only 30 photos (post cards). Too pricy as a book for me. Very cheap if you plan on using them as post cards. I paid $9.00 (2006) so that's only 30 cents each, a real bargain for the quality. The publisher should print up Volumes III thru C, I might by them all!
