Excellent!.......2007-10-03
I'm 52 yo. I read this book for the first time when I was 9, in the Portuguese version. Now I bought this pearl of literature to my young daughter. She is 14 and speaks English very well. She already read the entire Harry Potter saga and other books, like The Man and The Sea, etc. The classic story The Swiss Family Robinson and other books I received by the same order will be entertaining and important to learn more and more English. I'll expect to buy many other titles as soon as possible.
UNabridged??.......2007-04-04
I read this classic long ago and it left enough of an impression on me, through multiple childhood readings, that I still remember some of the lines word for word. The only problem is... they're not in here.
Now, I understand are that there are multiple translations and recensions of this work, so this COULD be an "unabridged" version of something closer to the original than what I first read - but if it is, then the original is nowhere near as charming and riveting as the version I recall. Everything here moves too quickly and simply, without suspense or detail; entire conversations are missing... and, most telling, "jumps" occur in which you think, "How did we get HERE?" This last is what makes me suspect that the "un-" was either an editor's mistake or a blatant bit of false advertising... but again, I'm no expert and don't have an "original" version to consult, nor could I read it except in an English translation anyway. Another point that makes the "unabridged" tag suspect is that some of the "lessons" are missing (i.e. Fritz getting scolded for "lying" that he brought nothing home with him, when his hands were obviously hiding something behind his back), and my understanding is that the author originally wrote this thing as one big lesson. (I may not agree with all the lessons, but why remove any part of a classic text?) The language, at least, hasn't been "dumbed down" for children (what an insult to children when we do that!), but it still reads like a simplified version of the story.
So I now own a book which I have little interest in reading, and have had to order another one... THIS time I used the "search inside this book" feature to find the exact lines I recalled from my childhood reading - and yes, I DID remember them exactly, they ARE in there. If you're curious, I looked at the scenes with Ernest classifying the agouti - "... listen to the great professor lecturing! He is going to prove that a pig is not a pig!" - and Franz objecting that "I should not much like to taste glue soup" - both in chapter 1, easy to find, and in this version completely missing. If, like me, you recall a richer version of the tale, try ISBN 0440415942.
That said, it's a nice solid hardcover edition with a ribbon bookmark. 1 star for a nice physical presentation. Now maybe I can find someone to pawn it off on.
The Swiss Family Robinson.......2007-03-19
This book, full of adventure, danger, and most of all, exciting discoveries and dangerous endeavors, will capture your imagination immediately.
Taken from their father's journal, this exciting book will engage you. A family of four boys, a mother & a father were shipwrecked on a desolate island w/absolutely no other people except themselves. Trying to survive in this dangerous wilderness is quite a job. Setting up several plantations, discovering giant skeletons, having an encounter w/a lion and lioness... these are only a few of the many exciting adventures they have.
This book I recommend for boys ages 8 and up. Girls may not be as interested as there are few female characters. I like reading this long book because of all the adventures in it. (Be sure to read the unabridged edition.) Like to read? Then you will like this book.

The adventure of Swiss Family report.......2007-02-26
I am Nicole Curtis a 6th grade student at Stanley British Primary. For my book report I
chose to read The Swiss Family Robinson. It was a captivating book about a family
stranded on an island. I enjoyed reading it very much.
The book Swiss Family Robinson had a lot of adventure it was about a family who got shipwrecked and used little bouts to get to land with all there animals and treasures. The family faced many problems at this island. They built two houses and the father, and his three sons named Fritz, Ernest Jack would go of on trips to find food and kill animals. There had been many hectic times in the forest on the island for example jack was in the woods with his brothers and a wild boar came after jack the dogs came after the boar to stop it from attacking jack his father and brothers were trying to shot at the boar but they were afraid they would hit one of the dogs but soon one of them hit and the boar was died and jack was pretty hurt. The dogs had been in many fits one had died from fitting a lion her name was Flora. After the family had been there for ten years Fritz the oldest son went on a trip and found a women Emily who's dad was sir Ewared Montrose and she had been shipwrecked also. Emily was a sister of the family now and soon after they found her a ship had came to their island and it had the Europe flag they were saved turns out Emily farther was looking for her. Some of the family decided it stay on the island cause that had everything there that they needed and they loved it but some of the family left to go back to Europe they new they wouldn't ever see each other again it was a though time for everyone. This is the summary of the Swiss family Robinson.
The author of this book had some hard words or words I haven't even heard of. It was pretty difficult to know what you were reading. But the author was very dscriprive she gave much information and painted a picture in my mind. I liked her writing I could understand what was going on in the book I could feel and picture what the family was feeling and facing and how hard it would to live on a stranded island. I would probably like to read an easer book my father thought it was a pretty hard book to read when he read little of it also. But I like it very much the author would kind of skip around like talk about on thing then move on to a different subject pretty fast. This is my opinion about the authors writing.

Book Description
"For many days we had been tempest-tossed . . .the raging storm increased in fury on the seventh day all hope was lost." From these dire opening lines, a delightful story of adventure begins. One family will emerge alive from this terrible storm: the Robinson's -- a Swiss pastor, his wife, and four sons, plus two dogs and a shipload of livestock, hens, pigeons and geese! Inspired by Daniel Defoe's "Robinson Cruesoe," this heartwarming tale portrays a family's struggle to create a new life for themselves on a strange and fantastic tropical island. There each boy must learn to control his own nature -- such as Ernest's bookishness and Fritz's hot temper -- as their adventures lead to amazing discoveries, danger, and tantalizing surprises, including a puzzling message tied to an albatross's leg. But it is the authenticity of the boys' behavior, the ingenuity of the family, and the natural wonders of this exotic land that have made The Swiss Family Robinson, first published in 1812-1813, one of the world's best-loved and most enduring stories of shipwreck and survival.

Other Books.......2007-09-03
A fairly low-key and low-rent adventure story. A shipwreck, and miraculously all who survive are of one family unit, plus some pets and enough livestock and food animals to keep them going.
They have to contend with the wildlife, build a tree house and other sorts of things to survive. Pretty tame all around, this story.
"What are the Robinson's going to kill tonight?".......2007-06-01
I read this with my 8 year old daughter. When she and I would prepare to read each evening we would joke " Lets see what the Robinson's kill tonight?" Then there is the crazy array of animals. Where in the world can you find Kangaroos, Antelope, Grizzly bears and condors without being in the St. Louis Zoo? This became stupidly funny and neither of us could take any of the book seriously. We finished it just to see how it ended. Even without the killing and impossible aminals it would have been dry and boring from the never ending descriptions of plants discovered and rigging gadgets from stuff they found, which is why Disney added Pirates to their version. I don't reccomend this book at all!
the swiss family robinson.......2007-02-26
I personaly thought that the swiss family robinson was a good book but it had a little to much discription in it. Every day of their lives is written and I think that jonathon wyss could have cut out a few peices.I gave this book 3 stars because I liked the story line a lot and most of the story but it just went on and on for a while about similair things like for example alomost every night he talks about eating dinner and how good it was,or they always found or made somthing new and useful they never really have a bad day.
here is a summary of the novel: the swiss family robinson get stranded on an island without siviliziation and have to learn to live with what they have. luckily they are stranded on and island full of provisions and safe places but they have to learn to cope with the wild animals and they even tame some of them.they bild a tree house a ,cave house and a cotage for them selves. they make a nice place for them selves eventually. They find a girl(Jenny) and her mother and help save them and the girl becomes their sister.friz goes back home when he is offered the job to tell people about new swisterland.
I can't really disided about jonathons wyss's style of writing I liked some of his writing and other parts I didn't like he was good with description of places and things but he worked to hard on description. but over all he did write very well, I liked how he would change somthing that they di8d everry day.
The Swiss Family Robinson.......2007-02-26
The book that I am reviewing is The Swiss Family Robinson. The Author is Johann Wyss. This Book is an Adventure novel; it has a lot of fun and interesting content. The author did a great job on this book.
The story is about a family that gets stranded on an island and try to survive by themselves. The family set up camp on shore. The family awhile after made a house in a tree. They only made it in 3 months and every person participated. The Family also had to fight animals such as a serpent and a lioness. The Robinsons planted crops and other vegetables. At times the children would do weird things but that made the story even more irresistible.
The writer's word use was a little above my level sometimes as a 6th grader, but was still enjoyable to read. Her Sentence structure was equal in the way that, not all her sentences were short, or long. This book has a lot of action and adventure, and sometimes rather sad. With word choice she used word that ranged in difficulty. This book is great for anyone who wants to read it.
The Swiss Family Robinson.......2007-02-26
I read the Swiss Family Robinson by Johann Wyss. This book was about a Swiss family with a mother, a father and four kids. They got stranded on an island. This book tells about all the family's experiences on the island!
This family suffers from a tragic shipwreck. Everyone abandoned the ship while the family is sleeping. They find their way to an island. At first they think that they will not be able to survive because they won't be able to find food on the island. They find out that there are a lot of wild animals to shoot for food. They built a tree house to sleep in and they find a cave to stay in when it is raining to stay dry. They discover many islands. In each island they find something special. It might be more animals to kill for food or sugar canes or a pet animal. With all the food, islands they discovered and the tree houses and other shelters they made, they end up living a life of luxury for living on an island.
I did not really like this book. I expected this book to be really good because it is a classic. After I read it I did not understand why it was a classic. I did not enjoy reading about animals getting killed. This book showed that the people were very self centered because they only thought about themselves. Although they do need food to survive I think they should only kill what they need instead of killing every thing that moves. For instance they already have two pigs but they need to kill two more, but they do not need that much food at one time. They also killed a walrus and a whale which they did not need for food. I also thought that this book was very repetitive, because the family woke up, killed tons of animals, ate dinner and went to bed. They woke up and did the same thing day after day. I also found it very hard to understand the book because it was written in old English. It was also very hard to distinguish who was talking because the author did not really describe each character very well so, I did not really have a sense of each character. The book has a lot of words that I do not know how to pronounce. I also do not know what the words meant. I am glad I read this book because over all it did have a good main plot line!

Swiss Family Robinson CD.......2007-08-04
An excellent reading of the original classic. The regular pauses make it easy to stop and pick up again later.
NOT for 4-8 years olds.......2007-03-18
I played this audio book in the car for my five and eight year olds. They begged me to stop after the first chapter. The narrator uses a monotone that drones on and on (yes, he does have an English accent). The plot was potentially exciting but the presentation was very poor.
A great adventure.......2006-12-18
The Swiss Family Robinson became a favorite after I read it for the first time when I was thirteen. A Swiss family is shipwrecked on their way to help begin a new colony. Everyone else being lost, they manage to escape to the neaby shore, returning to collect all the useful supplies from the ship. The father's ingenuity seems to make nearly everything possible. The story culminates with the possibility of returning to Europe, and the family deciding that their colony, New Switzerland, as they call it, is their home.
Written by a pastor, throughout the book thanks are given to God for their blessings, and His help is implored in times of danger. He is remembered in devotions and family prayer every morning, and Sundays are set apart from the rest of the week.
I enjoyed the British accent of the narrator, and will certainly listen to the CDs many times.

Book Description
_The tempest had raged for six days, and on the seventh seemed to increase. The ship had been so far driven from its course, that no one on board knew where we were. Everyone was exhausted with fatigue and watching. The shattered vessel began to leak in many places, the oaths of the sailors were changed to prayers, and each thought only how to save his own life. "Children," said I, to my terrified boys, who were clinging round me, "God can save us if he will. To him nothing is impossible; but if he thinks it good to call us to him, let us not murmur; we shall not be separated." My excellent wife dried her tears, and from that moment became more tranquil. We knelt down to pray for the help of our Heavenly Father; and the fervor and emotion of my innocent boys proved to me that even children can pray, and find in prayer consolation and peace._ . . . Many years ago, an English translation of the first part of this charming tale appeared; and few books have obtained such deserved popularity. The gradual progress of the family from utter destitution and misery, to happiness and abundance, arising from their own labor, perseverance, and obedience, together with the effect produced on the different characters of the sons by the stirring adventures they met with, created a deep and absorbing interest. Every young reader patronized either the noble Fritz, the studious Ernest, or the generous Jack, and regarded him as a familiar personal acquaintance. . . .
