Book Description
"Sublime . . . complex and riveting."-Maureen Corrigan, The Washington Post Book World
"A vivid picture of modern Chinese society . . . a work of real distinction."-The Wall Street Journal
"[A] terrific series. . . . [Qiu's] perspective on China gives the mystery genre a cultural twist and unusual direction that make his books unique and well worth reading."-The Rocky Mountain News
Inspector Chen Cao of the Shanghai Police Bureau is taking a vacation, in part because he is annoyed at his boss, Party Secretary Li, but also because he has been made an offer he can't refuse by Gu, a triad-connected businessman. For what seems to be a fortune-with no apparent strings attached- he is to translate a business proposal for the New World, a complex of shops and restaurants to be built in Central Shanghai, evoking nostalgia for the "glitter and glamour" of the 1930s.
It is up to Detective Yu, Chen's partner, to take charge of a new case. Yin, a novelist, has been murdered in her room. At first it seems that only a neighbor could have committed the crime, but when one confesses, Yu cannot believe that he is really the killer. As Yu looks further into Yin's life, ample motives begin to surface, even on the part of Internal Security. But it is only when Inspector Chen steps back into the investigation that the culprit is apprehended. And then Chen discovers how Gu has played him and how he, in turn, can play the new capitalist system.
Qiu Xiaolong was born in Shanghai and received an MA in English and American literature in China. He received a PhD in comparative literature from Washington University in St. Louis, where he now teaches. He is the author of Death of a Red Heroine, which has now been translated into seven languages, and A Loyal Character Dancer, both available in paperback from Soho Crime.

Inspector Chen Strikes Again.......2007-06-22
Let me set out my bias at the outset: I love the Inspector Chen novels. I drink up each one and can't wait for the next to be published. The real question is why do I enjoy them so much. The mysteries themselves (this one included) are not so mysterious. They are relatively straightforward. No novel twists and turns to challenge the mind. So, as a mystery, I would rate the books as mediocre. But the characters are fantastic. They are tortured -- each struggling to find his or her own way in a society that changes year to year, even month to month. Things that were taboo a decade ago are now norms. The characters wrestle not only with how to adapt to these changes but whether to adapt at all. After all, haven't we seen China develop down a path only to abruptly change course in "1984" fashion? Some criticize the prose as being plodding. But the prose mirrors the characters. They are deliberate -- unsure of the changes in themselves and society. I love the Inspector Chen novels, not because of the mysteries but because of Inspector Chen and all the other characters.
Fascinating Foray.......2007-06-13
In this detective novel, Qiu Xiaolong gives a detailed account of the tragic effects of the Cultural Revolution on ordinary -- and extraordinary -- people living in Shanghai in the 1990's. I could not solve the mystery, but I adored the poetry-spouting detective (who is probably quite a bit like the author) so much that I ordered Qiu's anthology of Tang and Song poetry.
When Red is Black.......2007-04-23
This is the third novel in Qiu Xiaolong's Inspector Chen mysteries.
The murder of a dissident author comes at an inconvenient time for Inspector Chen. He has just taken a break from his "iron rice bowl" job to engage in some highly paid free-lance translating. At first he is content to leave the investigation of the murder to his deputy, Sergeant Yu, but pressed by Party Secretary Li and by his own growing curiosity, he becomes fully involved in the unravelling of the murder case.
His translating job, however, continues. He has been given the task by Dynasty karaoke club owner Mr Gu (introduced in the previous novel A Loyal Character Dancer). Mr Gu, who has Triad connections, has also supplied Chen with a xiaomi, or personal secretary, the young and attractive White Cloud.
By coincidence, the murder has taken place in a shikumen, one of the traditional styles of housing created during the era of the Foreign Concessions in Shanghai; the translation undertaken by Chen is of an investment proposal for a major commercial, retail and residential precinct in the heart of Shanghai designed in the shikumen style. The author creates an interesting tension between the reality of life in the shikumen that is the murder site (no privacy, too many families living in incredibly cramped conditions) and the proposed New World project, the success of which, according to Chen "would depend on a myth - on nostalgia for the glitter and glamour of the thirties, or to be exact, on the recreation of that myth - blending the past into a delicious brew, a cup of cappuccino, to delight customers in the nineties" (p. 23).
Having been to Shanghai's model renovation in the shikumen style, the area known as Xintiandi, I can relate to the author's bemused sense of contradiction: the little museum and founding site of the Chinese Communist Party (my destination) is hardly noticeable among the yuppified coffee shops and bars of the new New China!
As with his previous novels, Qiu Xiaolong intersperses his narrative with insightful sociological observations. Some of these relate to the Cultural Revolution, which forms a backdrop to the murder, whilst others clearly reflect the author's concern with the growing gap between rich and poor that emerged in the wake of Deng Xiaoping's reforms: "The New World could turn out to be like present-day China, full of contradictions. On the outside, the socialist system under the rule of the Communist Party, but on the inside, capitalist practice in whatever disguise. Could the combination of the two really work?" (p. 139).
Nor would it be a Chinese novel without reference to food. White Cloud turns out to be an accomplished cook: "She finally emerged, carrying a large tray with a broad smile. `From the Dynasty Club,' she announced, placing on the folding table an impressive dinner that included some delicacies he had never seen before. One was a small dish of fried sparrow gizzards, golden crisp. How many sparrows had gone into the making of that dish, he wondered. The other dish, of duck, was also original - it was duck heads with the skulls removed, so people could easily reach the tongues, or suck out the brains. It was the sauna shrimp, however, that really impressed him. River shrimp were brought to the table in a glass bowl, live, still jumping and wriggling. She also provided a small wooden pail whose bottom was covered with red hot stones. She poured some wine into the bowl of shrimp, then took the drunken shrimp from the bowl and put them into the pail. There was a shrill hiss, and in two or three minutes, a plate of sauna shrimp appeared." (p. 108).
Some western reviewers have found the narrative pace and unexpected thrills of the mystery genre lacking in this novel; however, it is an intriguing tale and a pleasure to be transported back to a familiar Chinese setting.

Highly recommended.......2007-04-13
Another engaging Inspector Chen mystery, but this time his sidekick Detective Yu is more involved, which adds breadth to the story. But this is not so much a mystery as a portrait of modern Shanghai, which in spite of its economic boom is still haunted by the horror of the Cultural Revolution. Although the denouement seems a bit dragged out, this is a finely written piece of work.
A wonderful writer!.......2007-01-04
Qiu Xiaolong writes in a way that is so wonderful on several levels:
1. He is a superb writer.
2. These are very good mysteries/crime stories. No pat endings and detailed characters with complex motives and relationships.
3. This view into modern life in China and the effects on its people of that nations recent history are not to be missed. Nowhere will you find such a detailed and eye-opening look at "real life" in China unless you have friends from there!

This bible is like a jack hammer made into a work of art.
Watch when you break out this bible, it is like showing up to a north side high school ball game in an 8 door limo, with go team painted on it.
Folks treat ya like - "E. F. Hutton" - you remember the commercials where everyone gets real quite so as to hear anything he might say.
Warning when you whip out a serious bible like this, people expect you to either be a seeker or a teacher.
Way to nice to be used as a door stop!
If there is a seeker or teacher in your life that you would like to bring a tear of joy to - put this bible in their hands, and be ready with your camera. Most excellent, ***** Highly Recommended!
The One From Kirkbride.......2007-09-05
I have read that some are buying the NKJV Thompson-Chain Reference Bible and getting a Bible of lower quality this time. I didn't know what it was all about until I bought one for sale at a bookstore one time. After noticing that the pages where glued instead of sewn, I investigated (they can't be messing with my Thompson)! Anyway, here is what I found out. If you want the quality made one you have to get one that comes from the original publisher Kirkbride Publishing company. They sold the right to Nelson Publishers to publish the Thompson Chain as well at a lower price. The one from Nelson Publishers (ask before you order) is the lower quality, but the one from Kirkbride is the higher quality. I pray that this has helped. Pastor Aaron Gravett
Declining Quality---What a Shame!.......2007-08-28
Years ago(not too many years, though) Thompson Bibles from Kirkbride were a quality product. There was Morrocco Leather, Cowhide, Bonded Leather. The smooth and thick Cowhide leather has disappeared, and has been replaced aby some sort of Levant(pebble)grained madness that sells for $84.99, versus the $89.99 of the Cowhide. Definitely not worth it! There are now Bonded Leather editions in some horrible shade of bright purple, and also a forest green---both with black ribbon markers---is Kirkbride so cheap they can no longer afforsd to coordinate the ribbons? Also, most of the ribbon markers are cut very short, so they serve no purpose since there is nothing to hold onto...then there is this miserable Kirvella substance, which comes in Ivory, Grey, and Black. As soon as you hold the open Bible in your hands, the spine caves in. I don't care for red print in the Gospels, but the red-letter is now pink on some pages, or very light red, and hard to read. Bleed through with the inferior-quality paper. Need I go on(there IS more), or have I made my point as to quality?
The helps in the Bible are excellent and unchanged. The Thompson has been around for going-on 100 years, and still sells, so something must be right. You can learn much from the Thompson Bible. It's almost a Bible school between the pages. Unfortunately, the product quality now stinks, but the outrageous prices continue. Your choice.
KJV Bible of Choice.......2007-08-16
I love KJV bibles and own several different kinds of KJV bibles. However, the KJV Thompson Chain-Reference Bible is the one I would take with me if I were to be away from home for a long time. This bible uses scripture to back up scripture, less of man's input and more of the holy word. I love the way the chain references was set up and ton's of bible information at the back. I could take this bible with me anywhere and enjoy every minute of learning subjects and issues based on scripture and the excellent chain references. I always look forward to reading the KJV with this bible. I purchased the large print because it makes it easier to read the sideline scripture references and because I am going on 50. If you're looking for the only KJV bible for your home or if you know someone who loves the KJV bible and needs a replacement, this is the bible I highly recommend and the one I would buy for love ones. May the holy bible transform and renew your mind, that you may prove what is good, acceptable and the will of God.

Book Description
Written by highly acclaimed historian Gary B. Nash, this book presents an interpretive account of the interactions between Native Americans, African Americans, and Euroamericans during the colonial and revolutionary eras. It reveals the crucial interconnections between North America's many peoplesillustrating the ease of their interactions in the first two centuries of European and African presenceto develop a fuller, deeper understanding of the nation's underpinnings. Coverage explores the interaction of many peoples at all levels of society, from various cultural backgrounds and across the centuries; African-Americans as active participants in the cultural process, drawing upon the work of African and African-American historians; the origins of racism, tracing the development of racial attitudes and the mixing of people across racial boundaries; Indians as much more than victims, reaching beyond the Europeans that "discovered" North America to explore the society that had already been here for thousands of years; profiles of the various European colonizers, examining French, Dutch, and Spanish settlers and comparing their treatment of enslaved Africans and Native Americans with that of the English. For those interested in Colonial American History.

Don't believe the poor reviews.......2005-03-25
First of all, I can see where some would find this book boring- that is if the reader has no interest in American History. But this begs the questions- why would such a person pick up this book to begin with? For class maybe, but I imagine every student of history has read a difficult book or two. This one simply doesn't qualify. As far as books I've had to read for school, this was pretty easy to get through.
This book is not a primary source. If you are looking for such a thing, look elsewhere. This is a well-researched account of life on the early American frontier, and the interaction between different cultures.
Someone makes the claim further down that this book makes the Europeans look really bad. I disagree. This book does a fine job of looking at this time period from multiple view points. There are moments when the Europeans will come off badly, but almost any group has it's moments throughout history where it's not going to be a shining example of how to live your life. Aside from which, as this book points out, the Europeans are not one single group and the different European groups looked at within this book (The English, Dutch, French, and Spanish) all had different relationships with the various indigenous peoples of what would become the eastern United States. This book also takes a look at slavery and the origins of that horrid institution in the Americas. It is often fascinating reading and certainly doesn't deserve the one star reviews it's received.
So boring!.......2003-02-25
Like a few others on here I could not read this book. It did help me fall asleep though, lol. Anyone who's looking into reading this book, Id suggest checking it out of the library before you buy it.
..........2002-09-04
This is by far the worst book I have ever needed to read for school ever. When I attempted to read this book, I must've fallen asleep at least 10 times and I haven't even got past the first 2 chapters. I have no idea what my teacher was thinking when he saw this book. If it was a choice, I would choose negative 5 stars for this waste of paper and ink. It is, hands down, a boring book with absolutely not point at all except to critizice the immigration of the early Europeans. It almost seems like Nash couldn't give about the Europeans coming over here. Well, I would be quite upset if they didn't come over here, unless it would have prevented the publishing of his redundant, afwul book.
Exploring Nash's argument.......2002-02-05
RWB by Nash attempts to present a more accurate picture of colonial society. However, in the end, I believe Nash fails to do any real justice to his examination of this society's underpinnings. Essentially, Nash abandons this pursuit very quickly into the book and deals mostly with the facts of the era. Additionally, Nash's views seem all to decidedly Neo-Progressive. He simply will not concede a point or discuss a point, which does not fit this mindset. Another perhaps more disturbing issue is Nash's like of primary sources throughout his work. The majority of his sites are from other historians' works. But before you think of moving on and passing this work up understand a few basic things about it. First, by no means am I questioning Nash's historical ability or accuracy. Second, this work provides a novice student of history and excellent foundation to start to build an understanding of the Colonial Period on. Moreover, Nash's analysis though I find fault with it is still holds water in the historical community through refinements and redefinitions of his point. I suggest that any one seeking to get a handle on the Colonial period or start a study of this era should start here. However, do not read this work and take it as anything other then a meager beginning; instead, use it as a stepping stone to branch out into other works by Winthrop Jordan, William Cronon, Edmund Morgan, Bernard Bailyn, and Laurel Ulrich.
A View From All Angles.......2000-08-29
Gary Nash scratches beneath the surface in his analysis of the deomographics of colonial America. He skillfuly reveals the interaction between Europeans, native Americans, and Africans in the years preceding the American Revolution. Nash brings an important missing element to the mix by exploring how native American and African cultures affected European society, offering a refreshing look race relations. For once, readers are given a glimpse of the proud and unshakable cultures of these two exploited peoples.
Red, White & Black compares race relations between several different cultures and regions. Nash not only spouts statistics; he helps the reader to understand why certain peoples fought and why they formed alliances during this volatile period in our history.

Product Description
Never before has the history of the air war on the Eastern Front been written in such depth, in such detail, and so carefully balanced between both sides. The air war on the Eastern Front in World War II was history's largest and longest air campaign. Nevertheless, it has been one of the least known and least understood chapters of aviation history. This is because prior to the release of the Black Cross/Red Star series, publications on this immense subject have been based on material taken almost exclusively from the German side. Black Cross/Red Star, presented in several photo-laden volumes, has evolved as the most complete and detailed series ever published on the air war on the Eastern Front. Volume 3, Everything for Stalingrad covers the German summer offensive in 1942; the subsequent fierce air battles over the Caucasus; the Luftwaffe's onslaught on Convoy PQ-17; the hard air war over the Central and Northern combat zones, when the Soviets launched their relief offensives in the summer and fall of 1942; and, mainly, the huge Air Battle over Stalingrad. This volume contains a large number of photos along with 37 high-quality aircraft color profiles by Claes Sundin.
Customer Reviews:
Impressive and Valuable Book.......2007-06-06
The series "Black Cross Red Star" is a milestone in many respects. If you are interested of the air war over the Eastern Front these books are goldmines of information and contain many fabulous photos.
All books in the series are also well-balanced in the perspective as they have been made by specialists on both the German and Soviet air forces.
In this third volume the air war over Stalingrad and the Caucasus is highlighted. But unlike most other books on the Eastern Front this does not mean that the northernmost sector, over Murmansk, is forgotten. On the contrary the authors report extensively on this plus also on special female pilot detachments of the Soviets and the last great German successes, over Leningrad and Rzhev.
Being an author myself I am in awe at the amount of research that Christer Bergström and his friends have done. They have not spared themselves, that's for sure.
Finally I wish to stress that the photos, maps, paintings and lists are in themselves reason enough to acquire these books.
A Wealth of Information Previously Unknown in the West.......2007-02-08
Sub-Title: Everything for Stalingrad
This series of books, now in it's third volume (out of I believe four total) is a breakthrough in the description of the air war in the eastern front. For the first time we here in the west have been able to take advantage of the information being released out of the former Soviet Union. In this volume, the information is just about evenly balanced between information from the German and the Soviet sides in the battles. This includes not only the text, but also the pictures.
I didn't count them, but this book probably has about 200 pictures. You get the feeling that just about every type of plane flown by both sides. This includes more Me-109 variants than you can imagine as well as the Soviet and American planes such as P-39's, P-40's and B-25's given to the Soviets as part of Lend Lease.
The sub-title referring to Stalingrad shouldn't be taken as meaning the book is only about Stalingrad. It spends a lot of time talking about the battles around Leningrad, and has a quite complete description of the air attacks on convoy PQ-17.
This is a large format book, printed and bound using high quality materials.
Black Cross Red Star volume 3.......2007-02-07
This is the best volume so far of this series. A fast reading and excellent discription of the air war around Leningrad. The best was the portion of the book in the Caucasus air war. The description of the battle around Stalingrad was good but only gave one side of the description from either side in details many times about incidents.Christer Berstrom as always gives a very interesting view of the air war in the Arctic. I still believe it's one of the best descriptions so far to come of this aspect of the war in Russia. This seems to be winning team working on these volumes. Now I'm waiting for volume 4 to finish the story for this campaign in the south. Check out Vlad Antipov's book on "Dragon's On Bird Wings" for further reading of the southern air war from a Russian fighter regiment's view of Stalingrad and the war in the south.

Book Description
Handsome and ambitious, Julien Sorel is determined to rise above his humble peasant origins and make something of his life-by adopting the code of hypocrisy by which his society operates. Julien ultimately commits a crime-out of passion, principle, or insanity-that will bring about his downfall. The Red and the Black is a lively, satirical picture of French Restoration society after Waterloo, riddled with corruption, greed, and ennui. The complex, sympathetic portrayal of Julien, the cold exploiter whose Machiavellian campaign is undercut by his own emotions, makes him Stendhal's most brilliant and human creation-and one of the greatest characters in European literature.
Translated with an introduction by Roger Gard.
Customer Reviews:
"Hypocrisy is the respect vice pays to virtue.".......2006-11-21
Hypocrisy, or "frontin," is one of the least respected vices today. However, hypocrisy was much worse during the Victorian age, where its exaggerated concern for the external appearance of virtue led to insincerity and deception. This concept is brilliantly exemplified in The Red and the Black, a magnificent representative of 19th century French literature. Stendhal's claim to immortality lies in his perceptive writing that balances social commentary with psychological insights of the main characters, the arrogant yet clueless Julien, the virtuous Madam de Renal, and the impulsive Mademoiselle Mathilde de la Mole.
What I found most interesting was the portrayal of "hypocrisy" according to the protagonist's perception and as the overall characteristic of society during the Restoration period. The trouble is, Julien despises hypocrisy, but at the same time, he realizes that in order to acquire success he has to give in and be hypocritical. He holds a romantic view of Napoleon, but conservativism has forbidden such sentiments. Since the only possible route for the son of a bourgeois is the priesthood, Julien learns Latin in order to impress Chelan, the local priest, and this is only the first of a long series of insincere acts that helps him to get ahead. Authenticity is cheap.
Rousseau, one of Stendhal's philosophy muses, claims the source of hypocrisy is society itself because it is artificial and its members develop deformed natures. Society is deemed artificial because it imposes inequality among its members, especially when inherited social rank and inherited rank have nothing to do with the innate abilities of the person. Also, the artificiality of language creates a gap between the ideals and behavior in the real world. These ideals such as beauty, freedom, happiness, are all impossible to actualize in the real world because they are indefinable. There is nothing in the real world to correspond to these abstract ideals. The pursuit of abstractions in a socially invented hierarchy of wealth and rank causes psychological damage to people. One cannot truly live in an artificial world and escape the charge of hypocrisy.
Stendhal carefully showed how hypocrisy could betray a secret truth of character, and more importantly how the phony emphasis on piety actually drained all passion from the interactions of people in Parisian society.
a noble book.......2006-05-10
Stendhal's hero is the low-born but intelligent and ambitious Julien, son of a country carpenter. Julien is effectively shut out of power in French Restoration society by virtue of his lowly status.
But Julien is a scheming and calculating kind of guy. He does what it takes to get as far up the ladder as possible. This means stuff like seducing powerful women and hanging around with important bishops.
Stendhal, perhaps reflecting his literary genius, does not allow us (the readers) to formulate a definitive impression of Julien. We see him alternately as a despicable cad, an ambitious over-achiever, and a forlorn lovesick boy.
The book is about the anguish that Julien faces with regard to "how he should live his life." It is an important book to read if you are interested in the conflict between career advancement and personal integrity. This is a conflict that many of us face and, as such, the book is very relevant in today's world.
Stendhal wrote the book in about 1830 (the exact date is controversial) at the time of the Restoration in France. During this period, the nobility are once again in control, but are under constant threat from the masses who orchestrated the orginal revolution in 1789. Memories of the Napoleonic era are also fresh in everyone's mind.
It is a modestly challenging read. Hey, its French romantic (not postmodern) so how difficult can it be?! It offers an interesting glimpse into 19th-century French Restoration society. Go for it! I also recommend The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand, which explores the same theme of career ambition. There are a lot of similarities, in fact, between Julien and Rand's hero Howard Roark.
I would be interested if any other Amazon reviewers can comment on the similarities between Stendhal's Julien and Rand's Roark.
One of History's Great Novels.......2006-02-08
The Red and the Black is like no novel that I have ever read. The issues raised, and there are many, dealing with love, marriage, illusion, the role of religion in society, the nature of God, capital punishment, the role of class in society and countless others, are as relevant to life in America in 2006 as they were to France in 1830. The story not only has great intellectual depth, it is also wildly entertaining, as related by the sarcastic, cynical narrator who never seems to be able to decide whether he likes, or despises, his hero and those with whom he comes in contact. If I could give a rating higher than five stars, I would. This was the best book I have read in quite a few years.
A colourful tale..........2006-01-13
Stendhal's 'Le Rouge et le Noir' (The Red and the Black) is a classic novel that was very important to me in early formation of directions in life. I found I could identify quite strongly with Julien Sorel, who wanted a better life, a life of meaning and importance, and was torn about which direction in which to go.
The Red (symbolising the church, the scarlet of cardinal's robes) and the Black (symbolising the military, the uniform, etc.) were both options held out to me early; in fact, I rejected both for a while, but have found myself drawn back in the red direction.
The story is one of coming of age as a bookish fellow in a working-class family, then ambition (but not overpowering ambition; in fact, Julien's father wishes he had more), then shifting careers (rare in an era and country where one's path is usually set for life early; however, this was the post-revolution era in France, in which some things were giving way, some more than others, it seems). Julien is pulled by events rather than being the director and creator of realities; Julien finds he loves the affect of various roles in life (more than the substance and responsibilities that come with such roles) -- for instance, he loves the swagger and the horsey-ness of being a soldier, but doesn't particularly like to get dirty or have to fight. He likes the trappings of religious office, but isn't inclined so much to spirituality, and Julien ran up against this in seminary:
The seminary director said to Julien: 'Truth is austere, sir. But our task in this world is austere, too, is it not? You must take care to guard your conscience carefully from this weakness: Excess of feeling for vain exterior charm.'
There is love, a love triangle in fact, romance and thwarted desires, and loves fulfilled, if not completely. It ends with a dramatic homicidal act, trial, an execution, and a most bizarre funeral. The melodramatic performance of Mathilde (re-enacting an earlier story with which she was familiar in which the heroine carried the severed head of her lover to his grave) provided the most animated conversation among ministers and psychologists I have ever witnessed.
Stendhal often built a character's name out of words that were descriptive, which is sometimes lost in translation as the names often don't get translated in the same way, or may have lost the immediacy of their meanings over time. Julien may be a play on Julian the Apostate, enemy of Christianity; Abbe Castanede is decidedly Spanish and inquisitional; Noiroud and Moirod come from words meaning swarthy and mottled; many other examples abound.
This is a very hard book to encapsulate in such a small space. It is not easy reading, but it is rewarding reading.
And again, an interior dialogue of Julien in seminary helps inform me, and keeps me thinking (both for and against in many ways):
'In the seminary, there's a way of eating a boiled egg which declares how far one has progressed down the saintly path....What will I be doing all my life? he asked himself; I'll be selling the faithful a seat in heaven. How will that seat be made visible to them? by the difference between my exterior and that of a layman.'
Choose your path wisely.
Dostoevsky must've liked this one.......2005-11-21
In 1830, a novel appeared in France under the title Le Rouge et le Noir and the subtitle said that it was a chronicle of the nineteenth century. It wasn't really well received in the art and literary world where French Romanticism was the major style, ruled by the likes of Renee de Chateaubriand, Victor Hugo, Eugenie' Delacroix and Louis Hector Berlioz. The new novel was about a very complex character named Julien Sorel and his attempt to rise in post-Napoleonic French society. It is a satire of French society and of the two institutions: the army (the red) and the Catholic Church (the black) whose wrongs Stendhal has as the primary focus in his "chronicle" of post Napoleonic French society.
This masterpiece is probably the most influential novel until Flaubert's Madame Bovary. Stendhal's presentation of the character of Julien Sorel is not only original for 1830, but Stenhal's psychological insight into Sorel's mind was revolutionary for the time. Stenhal is often called the founder of the psychological novel. Tolstoy said it was greatly influential to him and Emile Zola and other realists of his day considered Stenhal to be the founder of their movement. But...did our great friend Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky (1821-1881) like it....nobody knows... It's almost like the elusive answer to the eternal question, (of course there is a God) who is the better novelist, Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky or Count Leo Nikolayovich Tolstoy (1828-1910)???? Nobody knows...yet everyone cares and wants to know... Who can tell us...how about you, Miss Woolf? Tolstoy?...yeah...well..I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with ya there, yeah, Tolstoy's been kinda flaky with me lately and I don't think one's better than the other.
Count Tolstoy, you are a great friend, and so are you Monsieur Dostoevsky. and you Monsieur Pushkin. My friends, my only friends. I love you guys! Hey bartender drinks all around!!! Hey!! Nikolai Gogol! You are my HERO!!!

My Favorite So Far.......2003-08-08
I am a pastor, and over the year's I have had the privilege of using several different study Bibles. I have used the Open Bible, Thompson Chain, Matthew Henry Study Bible, Dakes, Word, and Scofield to name a few. The notes and helps in each of these have their particular strengths and weaknesses. I could comment on each but will not. For my expository style of study, I have found that I like the Ryrie by far the best. What I am looking for is insight into the scripture for what it actually means, giving consideration to the original intent of the author, NOT JUST A PRETTY DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT. In the Ryrie, notes on Old Testament symbolism with New Testament fulfillment are great. In particular the notes in Hebrews are very well thought out. The notes in the Gospels are also excellent.
Dr. Ryrie chose his words in his notes to be concise meaningful but not overly wordy. This allows for the Bible not to be cumbersome to use with overly exhaustive notes that give repetitious lists (i.e. Dakes). If I had to choose one study Bible for the rest of my life this would be it.
My only regret: I purchased the less expensive bonded leather rather than the genuine leather. Now I have a favorite Bible that is full of my own hand written notes and underlined passages, but the cover is separating. Oh Well...

Ryrie Study Bible.......2002-11-02
This is an excellent Bible with a lot of extras that provide in depth information without just being filler. My only complaint is that there's not more room for notes.
Excellent resource!.......2002-01-28
In the short time since my purchase of this Bible, it has become my primary carry and reading Bible.
First, the explanations are quite thorough and researched. The introduction to each book of the Bible is quite useful for setting the stage for understanding the material to follow. Timelines are also included to help place Biblical events in perspective.
The overall quality of construction of this Bible is tip notch. I feel that even with heavy use, this Bible will be around for many years.
Ryrie Study Bible.......2000-05-16
I would like to highly recommend this Bible for anyone who is interested in studying God's word. In all my years of Bible study and preaching God's word the Ryrie Study Bible is the best study Bible I have found. I have recommended this Bible to many people and they all have enjoyed it also. It will help you to understand the Bible. It has a very detailed section in the back on Doctrines of the Bible, it also has detailed maps and outlines of the chapters. If you are interested in studying God's word this is the Bible for you.

Book Description
What is more important--race or class--in determining the socioeconomic success of the blacks and whites born since the civil rights triumphs of the 1960s? When compared to whites, African Americans complete less formal schooling, work fewer hours at a lower rate of pay and are more likely to give birth to a child out of wedlock and to rely on welfare. Are these differences attributable to race per se, or are they the result of differences in socioeconomic background between the two groups?
Being Black, Living in the Red demonstrates that many differences between blacks and whites stem not from race but from economic inequalities that have accumulated over the course of American history. Property ownership--as measured by net worth--reflects this legacy of economic oppression. The racial discrepancy in wealth holdings leads to advantages for whites in the form of better schools, more desirable residences, higher wages, and more opportunities to save, invest, and thereby further their economic advantages.
Dalton Conley shows how factoring parental wealth into a reconceptualization of class can lead to a different future for race policy in the United States. As it currently stands, affirmative action programs primarily address racial diversity in schooling and work--areas that Conley contends generate paradoxical results with respect to racial equity. Instead he suggests an affirmative action policy that fosters minority property accumulation, thereby encouraging long-term wealth equity, or one that--while continuing to address schooling and work--is based on social class as defined by family wealth levels rather than on race.

Great text on social policy.......2006-11-30
I originally purchased this book when it came out about 7 years ago and just reread it again. It provides great insight into the inequality between races in this country. Highly recommended.
One of the most thought-provoking books I've ever read.......2001-09-20
This book is both meticulous and very clearly written. Every time I had, while reading Conley's analysis, a nagging question in the back of my head, he went on to address it in far more detail than had even occurred to me.
Perhaps because of this thoroughness, _Being Black, Living in the Red_ fundamentally altered the way I think about certain social policies, and about race and wealth in general. It also interested me in sociology of inequality, a field about which I had known nothing. The book is incredibly informative about a matter of great public importance, but I appreciated that Conley seemed wary of overstating his case. I truly felt I was getting an honest, and extremely skillful, evaluation of the evidence.
Under the circumstances, I'd be hard pressed to do anything but advise you to read this book at the first chance you get.
A Wealth of Ideas.......2001-06-04
This book expands the research base that identifies wealth as a key component of mobility, and an important factor that explains why blacks and whites have divergent outcomes. However, Conley may be overemphasizing the role of wealth, and forgeting that race is still a critical issues. In fact, his models show that wealth is only a small part of the story. A great deal of the unexplained variance in Conley's models may be attributed to discrimination in society. Although Conley mentions this briefly, more attention needs to focus on this aspect the issue. Nevertheless, the discussions of wealth are rich and well developed, making this an important addition to the literature.
problems abound.......2001-02-12
The analysis is sound. This is to say, the examination of the relevant history and current structures, coupled with an examination of effects, is accurate and valid. However, the argument for implications is unsound - dangerously so. It seems that those driven to understand precisely why some people are faced with more challenges than others are usually willing to go the next step - to argue for engineered adjustments, blind to the fact that such programs engineer even more odious, systematic inequities.
It Takes A Village (and more).......2000-02-27
This is truly a groundbreaking book. Dalton Conley finally reveals the key element on pg. 118 in two unassuming little words: reserve stock. This is, ladies and gentlemen of the judging class, what separates the races and classes, NOT skin color or intelligence level. In the absence of such, no one can truly believe (except in fairy tales) that most people can overcome grinding poverty and helplessness to become productive members of society. Aside from mere technical support, that cherished "reserve stock" allows one entrance into arenas not usually penetrable via associations with those generous enough to usher one in. Trying to overcome the obstacles of poverty is like trying to drag a car without snow tires up a steep hill. I commend the youthful yet astute Dalton Conley for his valuable work.

Christians who have longed for a more readable literal Bible translation will find much to praise in the English Standard Version. The ESV's translation team of over 100 members has admirably attempted to preserve the stylistic variety of biblical authorship and ease of reading (at the eighth-grade level) despite the word-for-word translation, which historically has resulted in a choppier text flow. Bible study aficionados will appreciate the short introductions to each book, an extensive center column cross-reference system, full-color maps, and a 14,500-entry concordance. The hardcover edition includes the basic Bible frills: a presentation page, as well as marriage, birth, and death registries. There are some luxurious touches as well. The free, prepackaged CD-ROM has the ESV text, KJV Bible for comparative study and use with Strong's Concordance, Nave's Topical Bible, the Crossway Classic Bible Commentary, and others. These extra bonuses are a good incentive to take the English Standard Version for a test drive. --Cindy Crosby

Great Bible if you need a small one........2007-10-06
I used this to read a verse at a wedding in France. I, of course, did not want to carry a large Bible from the USA to France. It was the perfect size. Although, a little small in print but I knew that going in. It worked perfectly and everyone was pleased. I then gave it to the bride and groom as part of their wedding present.
A nice handy ESV bible.......2007-10-05
As for the translation, it's the best in accuracy and readability better than NIV and NASB. I bought this so that I can carry it around in my pocket. It's the perfect size to take it with you for a walk and devotion. The letters are quite small so it's not for long studies. A handsome little Bible for...highly recommend it.
Fantastic, concise Bible!.......2007-09-28
I purchased this ESV Bible because I wanted something small and portable, as well as a good, practical, readable translation. This print is excellent, the font is clear and not too small. The leather cover being soft gives the book an elasticity while not being too floppy. I have truly enjoyed my first few weeks of using this Bible and recommend it to everyone.
ESV Weathered Metal Bible.......2007-09-07
This is a handy bible to toss in my bag that I carry to work, the library, etc. Being in the Army National Guard, I appreciate the rugged, durable cover and the look of it. It's a decent translation, basically a conservative evangelical modernization of the revised standard version. I would recommend this bible to friends.
The Only Flaw is the Tiny Print.......2007-09-06
It's good to see the ESV gaining traction in the market. This is a beautifully bound compact Bible, with excellent reference notes and a remarkably complete concordance. Small enough to fit into a typical ladies purse, it's a convenient size to take on the train or bus. But the print is extremely small and takes some getting used to. It's a shame the publisher didn't make the Bible even slightly larger; I think it would have been a runaway best seller. As it stands, I can only give it 3 stars...the print is just too small.

Book Description
The text of Stendhal's classic novel Le Rouge et le Noir in this volume is an entirely new translation which renders the novelist's strict, hard style into contemporary colloquial English. For the first time in an English translation, notes are given that explain the book's local allusions and concealed autobiographical reminiscences. Students interested in the backgrounds of the novel may read the newspaper account, for the first time in English, of the murder trial upon which some of the novel's events are founded. Other materials, on Stendhal's style and on the 1830's background, are also provided. As with all Norton Critical Editions in Continental literature, a number of commentaries are here translated for the first time: Henri Martineau, Jean Prevost, George Poulet, Jean-Pierre Richard, G. Tomasi di Lampedusa, Alain, Paul Valery, Paul Bourget, and Hippolyte Tame. Other critics are Erich Auerbach, Rene Girard, F. W. I. Hemmings, Jean-Paul Sartre, Andre Gide, Marcel Proust, Friedrich Nietzsche, Jose Ortega y Gasset, and Robert M. Adams.
Each Norton Critical Edition includes an authoritative text, contextual and source materials, and a wide range of interpretations-from contemporary perspectives to the most current critical theory-as well as a bibliography and a chronology of the author's life and work.

Book Description
The Concord Reference Bible presents the King James Version of the Bible in an exceptionally clear and readable typeface. In size, it falls between the small hand-held text and the large desk Bible. This Concord Reference Bible offers a wealth of reference material in a fine calfskin leather binding – a glossary, a concordance, a dictionary of names and phrases, colour maps and gazetteer. Bold-figure cross-references link passages of the text without cluttering the page. The words of the Lord are printed in red. In addition, a presentation page and family record, India paper, gilt edges, ribbon markers and a fine leather binding make this a very attractive Bible to own.

KJV Concord Reference Black Calfskin CD267.......2007-06-08
"God's Word revealed to a simple man." The Book contains the key to eternal life. What an awesome GOD, to send HIS only SON - from Glorious Heaven, to filthy earth - to become a man, as you and I, and to be Crucified, willingly, to die for The Believer's Sins....and to defeat Death - and Rise Again, Immortal, and Eternal. THANK YOU JESUS.
Poor print quality.......2007-03-03
This bible is a pleasure to hold in your hands (Black Goatskin Leather). I was concerned that the size of the type would be too small, but that was not the case at all. As another reviewer pointed out, the print quality was poor. The letter shapes were slightly distorted (not laser printer crisp) and small portions of some letters were missing, The text is easy to read, but still a disappointment to a graphic designer/typographer who's profession involves noticing such imperfections. I will be keeping the Bible because I trust Cambridge to get the scripture itself right, which is obviously the most important consideration. I don't have the same faith in other publishers in that regard.
did not meet my expectations.......2007-01-20
Let me just say that I love the bible. I have been searching for a high quality copy of the scriptures and after reading many reviews I decided that the cambridge bible was it. I recieved the bible in a reasonable amount of time and immediateley began to read it. Many of the reviews I read raved about the quality of the typset, how fine it was. Unfortunately this just was not true of the edition which was sent to me. Much of the type was missing portions of the individual letters and was blurred in some places. I can get this type of quality for a third of the price from a bible at Wal-Mart. Also the two ribbon markers which came with my bible were already starting to shred at the ends when I first opened the bible! What a shame. The only positive thing I can say about the bible is the fine leather cover. I purchased the goatskin leather edition and the leather was exquisite. Thats the only thing I will miss about this bible because I am returning it.
Bible Quality.......2007-01-11
This is one of the finest Bible bindings I have ever owned. I am a Pastor and my Sword it used on a daily bases so I need one that will hold up. Amazon had the best price value.
Amazing Quality.......2006-12-06
Let me just say I have a bit of a problem. I have bibles, lots of them. I might have found what I would call the holy grail of bibles. The leather on this bible is fantastic, much nicer than any of the calfskin bibles that I have. Oh, the soft subtle smell of a leather bible. It looks like someone knew what they were doing when they made this bible. The paper is beautiful and I love the refrence system of this bible. No little numbers in the text to annoy or distract you. The refrence system in this bible should be used in all bibles. The size is perfect for me not to small as to get lost and big enough to fit comfortable in the hand. The font and type is clear and dark. So far the only thing I have found wrong is in the back in the bible dictionary, some of the words seem to be a little washed out or the type is not as dark as the rest of the bible. This is the first bible that I have actually felt like I got what I paid for. I would recommend this bible to anyone.
