Book Description
Derived from the powerful mastiff dogs of Roman Times, the Cane Corso comes to modern man as an agile protector, a big-game hunter and an all-around working dog. This large and formidable Italian guard dog is currently enjoying a Renaissance in the new century as a recognized pure-bred dog, attracting many new fanciers every year. Not the dog for the inexperienced or the faint of heart, the Cane Corso is a strong-minded and strong-bodied protection dog, naturally suspicious of strangers and devoutly attached to his owners.
This Special Rare-Breed Edition, the only book of its kind about this fascinating Italian Mastiff, offers an insightful history of the breed, an in-depth look at the breed's characteristics and standard as well as puppy selection and rearing, obedience training and housebreaking, and health care and maintenance. Owners will welcome the author's good advice on puppy-proofing the home, socialization and preventing puppy problems. In addition to an authoritative, comprehensive text, this book presents over 135 photographs in full color, which prove to be as informative as they are attractive.

cane corso.......2007-05-12
this is the only book on this breed i can find. Very informative.
Wonderful dog, wonderful book..........2007-04-29
I love this breed and this book had all the information of the history, care, and behavior of the Cane Corso. It also had a puppy section if you need to know about puppy care. Amazon had the estimated date of delivery 2 months away (and no, it was not because it had not been released)...but I got the book in about a week and a half.
Cane Corso.......2007-01-20
It was so nice to find a book about the Cane Corso. We just purchased one in November and I wanted to get my boyfriend a nice book about the rare breed and this was the only one that I could find. There are a lot of nice photos in the book as well. I'm hoping to find just a picture book of them also. I guess I'll keep looking.
Great Book, Lots of Info.......2005-08-06
I recently came to know of this breed through (...) and decided that I wanted to learn more about the breed before making my decision to get a puppy. I spent hours searching the net for info, and I eventually found this book. As far as I know this is the only book on the breed in English so for those wanting to learn more and don't speak or read Italian this book is priceless! It gives a great overview of the breed, useful information about the history, training, taking care of it, and a very extensive section on the breed standard. It covers some of the key points like the importance of socialization, and potential pitfalls if you do not socialize. This book looks nice and has many great pictures, and even a place in the back to place a picture of your puppy, and basic information about your dog. This is the second book I have from the Kennel Club series; both are very professional and informative. This book is worth the price for anyone considering this breed and for any one who already has a Corso. After reading this book I made my final decision to get the breed.

Great first book, just Great book!.......2007-10-03
I'm loving this book. It isn't in a hurry to be told, and the overlapping
4 parts are beautifully knit and woven into a wonderful family history.
This is not your usual "I was born a poor black slave" story.
It's vibrant, and exciting, and paints layers of character in each generation.
It is tragic without being a tragedy. It's a story well told.
Something to pass on and be proud of.
Excellent job, Lalita
Couldn't put it down.......2007-09-25
I have about 10-12 more pages to read of this book.. I couldn't put it down since the first day I received it... love it, love it.. I will be making a purchase of another one of her books... and the pics in the inside are awesom. This makes me want to seriously find out about my own family history. Lalita you go grrl..
Cane River is an excellent book! Read it, buy it!.......2007-08-18
This was a very interesting look into the criminal system that slavery was in 19th century America. It's not just about abuse, betrayal, unfairness, and generations of oppression, it's about the overcoming quality of the human spirit. These women and their families lived through the second-largest human catastrophe in American history (following abortion)and they perservered. The perpetrators (owners and their families) were a sad but brutal lot. I cannot understand how one man can hold another in chains and expect the imprisioned man to be content and thankful for that horrendous experience. Read this book. It is outstanding.
Generations of Slavery.......2007-08-09
Lalita Tademy, the author of this story, became intrigued by her own lineage. She investigated and found she could trace her past back through several strong and charismatic women, some of whom were living as slaves in Louisiana. She used these facts to spin a fiction based on the real and imagined lives of these women and their families.
I thought this book was a good look at the day-to-day lives of slaves and plantation owners before the Civil War, then at the lives that blacks and whites lived shortly after slavery was abolished.
I found, though, that this book didn't have as much of an emotional impact on me as I had expected. The characters are raped, they bear children who are born into slavery, and their loved ones are sold away with no hope of reunion. These things should have been profoundly moving, but I found the author's style to be a bit dispassionate. As a result I just didn't feel as invested in these characters and their stories as I could have.
Wonderful book.......2007-08-06
This is an incredible book! I never wanted to put it down because I felt so intimately involved in the details of the lives of these women. Its an embarrassing chapter in American History that was brought to life with courage and skillful writing. Its difficult to believe that this was Tademy's first attempt at writing a book.

Cane River (Oprahs Book Club)
Amazon.com
Lalita Tademy's riveting family saga chronicles four generations of women born into slavery along the Cane River in Louisiana. It is also a tale about the blurring of racial boundaries: great-grandmother Elisabeth notices an unmistakable "bleaching of the line" as first her daughter Suzette, then her granddaughter Philomene, and finally her great-granddaughter Emily choose (or are forcibly persuaded) to bear the illegitimate offspring of the area's white French planters. In many cases these children are loved by their fathers, and their paternity is widely acknowledged. However, neither state law nor local custom allows them to inherit wealth or property, a fact that gives Cane River much of its narrative drive.
The author makes it clear exactly where these prohibitions came from. Plantation society was rigidly hierarchical, after all, particularly on the heels of the Civil War and the economic hardships that came with Reconstruction. The only permissible path upward for hard-working, ambitious African Americans was indirect. A meteoric rise, or too obvious an appearance of prosperity, would be swiftly punished. To enable the slow but steady advance of their clan, the black women of Cane River plot, plead, deceive, and manipulate their way through history, extracting crucial gifts of money and property along the way. In the wake of a visit from the 1880 census taker, the aged Elisabeth reflects on how far they had come.
When the census taker looked at them, he saw colored first, asking questions like single or married, trying to introduce shame where there was none. He took what he saw and foolishly put those things down on a list for others to study. Could he even understand the pride in being able to say that Emily could read and write? They could ask whatever they wanted, but what he should have been marking in the book was family, and landholder, and educated, each generation gathering momentum, adding something special to the brew.
In her introduction, Tademy explains that as a young woman, she failed to appreciate the love and reverence with which her mother and her four uncles spoke of their lively Grandma 'Tite (short for "Mademoiselle Petite"). She resented her great-grandmother's skin-color biases, which were as much a part of Tademy's memory as were her great-grandmother's trademark dance moves. But the old stories haunted the author, and armed with a couple of pages of history compiled by a distant Louisiana cousin, she began to piece together a genealogy. The result? Tademy eventually left her position as vice president of a Fortune 500 company and set to work on Cane River, in which she has deftly and movingly reconstructed the world of her ancestors. --Regina Marler
Customer Reviews:
A Very Enjoyable Read.......2007-09-17
Cane River is a reconstruction of historical events during slavery in the 1800s. Ms. Tademy added well written fiction to fill in the gaps. The book is about four generations of women and their determination for survival for their families. The book is written into three chapters of three of the women.
Ms. Tademy writes about forbidden love, betrayal and how these women fight for their identity in a world that sees them as less than human.
When I first started reading this book it moved slow and some parts were troubling to me but I'm glad I kept reading the book.
creoles.......2007-08-29
Really enjoyed this book. I loved the combination of fact and fiction and the famliy photos. It flowed well and was interesting. It's amazing how times have changed and how racist this country was and is.
Beautiful story..........2007-08-06
This book captivates you from the beginning to end. I am not a fan of "historical" books because I usually find them boring! But I took a chance with this one and I was left speechless. This book haunted me for days, I kept thinking about the characters and what they experienced. The author wrote the book so beautifully...it's a must read. This book has made me proud to be an African-American, because I know I come from a lineage of strong Black women!
Very Engaging.......2007-08-02
I loved this story the entire way through. The fact that it is based on real people and real events gives it an extra added sense of fascination. I read a lot of historical fiction, and this book is one of the better ones in the list of my reads. It really gave me a sense of what the world looked like for slaves, and freed slaves. Very Engaging the entire way through.
A Mesmerizing Page-Turner!.......2007-07-18
I was looking for a very enjoyable, readable and engaging book, and I found it! You will love the characters, the history and the insight this book has to offer, and you won't be able to put it down. Enjoy.

I consider Mr. Monek to be the "world authority" on walking sticks and canes. I've managed to make a very good living in the antique cane business with his expert guidance. If you're investing your hard earned money in this "tricky" industry you better have this book.

I'd been looking for an authoritative Kane "Bible" for some years now (I spell Kane with the "K" as the ancient Cameroonians did). This book not only met my Kane needs, it exceeded them. I was doing a article for a local paper on Kane usage in the Depression years. This answered all of my questions and gave me the insight to write my Hufnagle Award For Journalism winning article (named for the late great Earnesto Hufnagle). This is a must buy for any Kane enthusiast!

Great learning tool!!!.......2007-09-03
If you do not know where to start with kissing a woman, read this book! It will give you several great techniques to equip you with the tools that
will turn her on!!!
Just wait until you read about the Trobriand Islands kiss!.......2006-08-04
How do you turn a complete amateur into a confident kisser? Read this book, that's how. I got it the summer before I started college. I never dreamed I'd have the confidence that a lot of my roommates seemed to have, but after reading this wonderful book I was a different person. I wasn't dreading kissing, I was actually looking forward to it. You learn not only all the different kisses - there are about 35 - but you also learn what the opposite sex likes and dislikes about each one. I'm now happily in a relationship, and my boyfriend tells me I'm the best kisser ever. (I taught him the Trobriand Islands kiss!) My sorority sisters are always borrowing my copy of this book, they get such a kick out of it.
A self-help book that *really* helps!.......2006-07-29
Believe it or not I was 22 before I had my first kiss, and I got this book to help me get over my shyness. Omigod did it help! After I read the first twenty-five pages I was like ready to run out and corner this guy I had a crush on and try a biting kiss on him. So it turns out we were at a party and I got the opportunity. Before you know it I'm using the ideas from the book and had my first kiss, did the biting kiss (he loved it), then went for a french kiss (which he complimented me on), and finished off with a vacuum kiss. Needless to say the book helped me. If you love to kiss, you owe it to yourself to get *this* book. It worked for me, and then some!
What a book!.......2006-07-09
They don't call him the world's leading authority on kissing for nothing! I saw the author on the Today show and that's why I bought this book. I was pleasantly surprised. I thought it would simply be a bunch of quotes from old poets on kissing, like so many of the other books on the subject, or some simplistic instructions, but THE ART OF KISSING is not just another run of the mill "how to" book. If you're like most people, you probably want something helpful, something you can learn from. This book is the real thing. Over 200 pages of solid advice on everything from lip-o-suction to the french kiss (a whole section!) To the sliding kiss and more. My boyfriends almost pass out when I kiss them these days. You won't be disappointed.
Go with a winner........2006-07-09
Go with a winner. This is hands down the best book on kissing. I'm no neophyte when it comes to kissing, but I bought this book because it's got tons of helpful info for advanced kissers: how to kiss the ear, the neck, the arms; how to use the tongue, the teeth, the lips; how to kiss for a long time, how to vary your technique, how to be a better kisser. Plus it's well written and full of helpful quotes from guys and gals on what they like. Bottom line: after reading it my girlfriend said, "Where'd you learn to kiss like that!"

Good book for the very young .......2007-06-19
The book is good for very young carvers. The pictures are great and the author does show everything. As a matter for discussion the author provides too much detail and if you need lots of detail then this book is what young starters can use effectively.
Hoped for more.......2005-07-31
Although it does cover the subject and offer examples for inspiration, it does so in very broad strokes. I had hoped for mre istruction and less inspiration.
Informative, Instructive, Well written, Great pictures.......1999-01-29
I used this book as a basis for all my carvings, This book actually started me in the buisness of woodcarving and I created my first Walking stick from the instructions therein.
The best carving instruction I have ever received........1997-05-06
Two years ago I purchased this book and a set of six tools. My goal was to create a hobby that was rewarding and relaxing. I can truthfully say that I have never been more satisfied with any purchase. I have found a world of enjoyment from the simple act of cutting wood. In three days, I will exhibit in my first show, The Tupelo Gum Tree Festival, Tupelo, MS. I have never been more relaxed and proud of anything I have done before. Thank you Tom Wolfe!

Exceptional.......2007-06-11
This is a terrific book for everyone to read. In our busy world with all of the distractions and problems, this book brings you back to what is important: Believing in yourself and what you can accomplish by believing in yourself. It is an uplifting message.
I'm a believer.......2007-02-26
This is an excerpt of the salient points from the book, about an hour long. It's a good introduction to the book -- buy the CD and then you'll either want the book so you can learn more, or you'll decide you're not interested. The book from which it's excerpted is excellent, and highly recommended. The gentleman who wrote it died back in 1951, but the subject matter is just as pertinent today as it was in 1948 when he wrote it. I give the CD 4 stars and the book 5 -- you'll want to read it more than once and listen to the CD more than once to really get everything from it. It's a little vague in some ways, and sometimes you may think "come on, just spit it out already!" but if you pay attention, it's worth a whole lot more than you'll pay for it. It really *can* help you change your life.
Simple ideas for simple minds.......2007-01-12
This book can be summed up efficiently without one's having to read it. The "case" here is that if you set your mind to something you can almost always achieve it. Umm...and...?
This book is in fact just another in a long line of books that tell you what you already know, but usually don't want to hear, for a small fee. It's much easier to buy a book than do the things that cause one to be successful, like working hard, being persistent and patient; and in the end, this book basically says that's what you have to do anyway. The author's only "new" caveat is that it helps to imagine your success and believe it's possible first. Again...yeah...and...?
I ran across this book through one of the unusual connections Bristol points out in one of his many case histories--I was looking for something and I found this. I approached it with about as open a mind as is possible for someone with a decent education and a modicum of life experience. At first I was intrigued...was the author really going to try to make a case that there's some new unheard of science to the art of belief and self-confidence that I'd not yet heard of? The opening chapter was certainly enthusiastic enough to convince me to purchase the thing with a minmum of scanning through it. You can certainly get the book cheap enough too, at least there's that.
Upon reading further it became apparent that Bristol has little to say beyond his original premise. To his credit, he's right: it IS effective to approach something you want with the confidence that you can attain it. And maybe he was the first (or one of the first) to point this out to the public. However, immediately I began to find cracks in the veneer. First off, Bristol asserts that you can have "anything" you set your mind to...later he'll add, quietly, that of course you have to have some other things, like job skills or experience, contact with people, etc. Even later he'll conclude that really there is no substitute for hard work, and that to gain something any other way isn't going to work (example, that "most" gamblers end up poor in the end--and Bristol repeatedly uses this word, "most," without verifying which figures led him to this nebulous number, revealing more about his own morals than anything).
My second curiosity about the book...the author writes with the assumption that what "most" of his readers are looking for is material gain, that they don't have enough money and want more. Aside from the greedy picture it paints of his readers, it seems pretty rude politics for Bristol to hint that he has the secret to financial success but must be paid before he'll reveal it...but then, isn't that what get-rich-quick seminars are usually about anyway?
But worst of all, because the author has very little to offer other than common sense and some "pyschic phemonena" hooey that might have interested Stephen King when he was researching "Carrie," the majority of this book is filled with "case histories." Much of them are Bristol's own accounts; there's something a little creepy about a guy who obviously has such good friends they'll loan him a tool just when he needs it most, and he attributes it more to his focused thoughts than their simple generosity, to say nothing of any mention anywhere of returning such favors to his friends, or being appreciative to the ether, or "whatever" (Bristol fortunately skirts religious issues for the most part). I know people like this--people who get lucky in work or every day life and suddenly decide they were born with a caul on their face and have "special powers." The other cases the author lists are tantamount to him asking friends for stories of their unusual phenomena, like a man who imagines a protective circle around himself. Well...where are the stories of people who tried it and it DIDN'T work out? I don't even have to do a poll, I can think of dozens off the top of my head; people who believed honestly and completely and worked as hard as humanly possible and it didn't work out anyway. It's called "Life," and no one has ever been completely able to explain it.
So should Bristol not have written? It seems to be a popular book and I don't begrudge him his success, any more than I do Barnum. That's "Life" too. I DO, however, begrudge Bristol's rather insulting chapter on feminism where where he basically tries to point out, "Ya know, women are more powerful than we men give them credit for!" There's another non-PC bit Bristol uses that's a little odd, a summation that includes a warning concerning an example of Englishmen working on plantations in jungle outposts. As Bristol writes, "We all know what happens to a man living among uncivilized people--occasionally he goes native."
Oops! I know this is an old book, but...
It is this sort of prose that had me, by about Chapter 3, really annoyed with the author, his unfounded case histories and his ideas in general. Again, I don't deny his original assertion has merit and if this book has helped people and not harmed anyone it is ultimately a good thing. I for one am doing my part to get the word out that if you're really ready to work at feeling better about yourself, check out (no, don't just check it out, WORK it) "Feeling Good" by David D. Burns. If you measure your success by material gain the only book you need is "Power" by Robert Greene. They are big books and the ideas enclosed are complex, well-thought out and researched and without question life-changing; everything Bristol's book tries to be and is not, in my opinion. I gave it 2 stars because it could've been worse.
Excellent book, well worth the money!.......2006-07-02
The Magic of Believing has always been one of my most favorite books and it was so great to find out that it was also available on audio CD. Wow. The concepts are so simple and yet it really works.
Thoughts are things........2006-03-13
This book proves that what you think comes into being. When people say "the placebo effect" worked, what they are really saying is that if you think it, you make it happen. This book shows you how to do it. It is an exellent book for proving your mind can make things work out for you.

Very limited appeal.......2007-05-01
This book COULD serve a purpose, but only for those who have not yet kissed and/or are under the age of 15 or so. For those, the general information contained in this book, while a bit old-fashioned and repetitive, could be of some use.
For others, however, it will accomplish little. Almost all of the "special" kisses contained in the book are either already widely practiced or self-explanatory and useless. "What is a surprise kiss?" "It's when you are surprised by a kiss." "What is a grudge kiss?" "Its when you kiss someone else after being cheated on." These are not new kisses, they're simply kisses grafted on to outside circumstances.
The advice tends to be constant repetition that boys should slow down, focus more on lip-only kissing, and try to be romantic. Girls should make it clear to the boys that they like that they are interested in kissing them.
Hopefully that saved you a few dollars.
kiss and tell.......2004-01-11
...(This book) is one of the best kissing books ever published. It's full of great kissing advice and for anyone interested in lip-to-lip romantic kissing, there just isn't a better book ...
a great practical guide.......2004-01-11
Here's a book that's great for experienced as well as new kissers. Anyone who cares about the romantic aspect of kissing will love it. The best thing about the book is that William Cane tells you how to do thirty different types of kisses. Most readers probably only know the french kiss so they'll learn a lot of new kissing techniques. The other benefit of the book is that it answers every question you could think of and is the most detailed treatment of the french kiss in print. After reading it you'll enjoy kissing more. Some other reviewers obviously didn't get the humor in the book but there's plenty of it, which is another big plus. A must read!
Boring.......2000-03-14
This book is very childish and the author often forgets that he's suppose to give us information on kissing. Sometimes, he just goes off into wild romance-style passages. I didn't buy the book for that. I want info, info and more info. There are some things that are interesting, but the author seems to have little to offer himself. He shares very little of his own experiences and constantly quotes anonymous school-girls throughout the lamo-book. I don't hate the book, it's just not informative enouph. The author constantly seems to take the woman's side in most issues. What I hated most about this book was that if your ever in a jam with something, lie to get out of it. What happened to honesty? If your going to be in a relationship and be a phony then you may as well not be in one.
Kisses please!.......2000-01-11
I did find a few useful kisses that look intresting...I can't wait to try the finger-kissing on my boyfriend.
