It's Sunday after dark. Your baby is sick, hurt, or acting strangely, and the doctor won't be in until tomorrow. How can you find out what to do when your healthcare professionals are unreachable? You may only need to go as far as your bookshelf. The revised edition of Caring for Your Baby and Young Child: Birth to Age 5 (the American Academy of Pediatrics' reference book for infancy through preschool), provides a wealth of authoritative child-care information in an easy-to-use format.

The first half of this hefty text serves as a comprehensive parenting manual, and includes a month-by-month guide to the first year, nutritional information, basic care instructions, and physical, emotional, and social developmental milestones for children up to 5 years old. While the American Academy of Pediatrics represents the mainstream child-rearing philosophies embraced by thousands of baby doctors, it does not reflect the entire gamut of child-rearing theory. (There's no discussion, for instance, of breast-feeding past the first year or co-sleeping.) The second half of the book includes a thorough, easy-to-navigate emergency first-aid section, plus detailed information about childhood illnesses, immunization schedules and side effects, and family structures, as well as a discussion of behavioral issues. Caring for Your Baby and Young Child is useful, sensible, and carefully researched, and makes a trustworthy addition to any parent's bookshelf. --Ericka Lutz

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE!!!!!!.......2007-10-03

I got this book for free when I signed up for BabyClub at Publix. And I love this & have used it A LOT!!!! It is a must for any parent & even grandparent!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing. I would have expected better.......2007-09-30

It's unfortunate that the American Academy of Pediatrics would use this book to push their political agendas about gun control. On page 394 it says "The American Academy of Pediatrics strongly supports gun control legislation. We believe that handguns, deadly air guns, and assault weapons should be banned. Until handguns are banned, we recommend that handgun ammunition be regulateed, that restrictions be placed on handgun ownership, and the the number of privately owned handguns be reduced."

People who are buying this book are looking for baby advice, not political garbage. It's sad that AAP would stoop so low to include comments such as this.

We received this book as a gift, and I'm sorry that anyone spent money on it.

5 out of 5 stars My "Bible" for the first 5 years and then some!.......2007-09-14

We bought this book when my 9-year-old was an infant and still use it when she gets sick. I also buy this for every friend and colleague who is expecting. It's true what the summary said. In the middle of the night, when my child spiked a fever or was screaming due to a mystery illness (and couldn't talk yet), I'd have this book open in my lap while calling the advice nurse. And the information from both sources would usually sync up. Sometimes it was just another great way to gain a balanced perspective on what was "normal" when I was a new mom.

4 out of 5 stars This book has been a good guide for me .......2007-09-14

Definitely a must for every mother or father who wants to know about his/her daughter/son's growth yearwise. Everything is explained in detail...

A big book and a bit heavy to carry around..but if you are not moving around with this book, then a good buy.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful book, but sexist.......2007-09-03

This book is incredibly informative, but there is a lot of sexism included in descriptions of parental roles, etc. The section on "The First Month," with "A Special Message to Mothers" and "A Special Message to Fathers" is especially insulting to me. I'm gay, and my partner and I have a new baby at home. As such, we obviously don't follow stereotypical gender roles. While I realize that most families are heterosexual (even if they're not 2-parent), I take offense at the assumption made in this section that father's are sole breadwinners and that they "tend to roughhouse more, making lots of noise," while mothers "generally concentrate on more low-key stimulation such as gentle rocking..." Give me a break.

Over time, twin enterprises Cook's Illustrated magazine and America's Test Kitchen have published many books dedicated to providing exhaustively tested recipes--"best" versions of traditional dishes plus definitive takes on kitchen equipment and ingredients. Some series readers have complained of endlessly recycled or rejiggered recipes; others take each book at face value, finding the formulas and cooking insights good and helpful. America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook, which calls itself a cookbook, cooking school, and kitchen reference in one, offers over 1,200 approachable recipes for a very wide range of dishes--from "weekday" fare like Creamy Rice Casserole, Cheesy Nachos with Spicy Beef, and Skillet Lasagna, to dressier recipes, including Pan-Seared Lamb Chops with Red Wine Rosemary Sauce, Roasted Trout Stuffed with Bacon and Spinach, and Chocolate Marshmallow Mousse. There are "specialty" chapters devoted to sandwiches, drinks, and slow cooker and pressure cooker dishes; a grilling section is a tutorial in itself.

Unorthodox, "better-way" approaches abound. For example, a fried chicken formula instructs the cook to wet the bird's dry coating slightly before it's applied for an extra-crunchy crust. Predictably, side bars feature equipment and ingredient evaluations, on bottled salsa, for example; "good food/bad food" photographs show readers what to aim for when producing fare like holiday cookies; and there are tips, charts, and "Cooking 101" sidebars galore. Step-by-step photos offer more direction still.

Though the majority of recipes are sound and yield tempting results, readers poring through the book will note gaffes and curiosities. The recipe for poached eggs, for example, offers the option of extra cooking for "firm yolks" (hard-boiled poached eggs, anyone?) and hamburgers receive an indentation before cooking to avoid "puffy" domed burgers, a novel problem that could, in any case, be solved by proper shaping. The addition of sugar to some savory dishes--for example, a pan sauce for steak--is misguided. Readers should also know that the book, which comes in loose-leaf form, requires some assembly, and that the pages themselves are quite thin, making them vulnerable to spills and tearing in daily kitchen use.

These things said, the book delivers solid, family-friendly dishes with enough fully orchestrated "how- to" to make even novice cooks feel secure when tackling the basics or more ambitious fare.

What's New in the Revised Editon?
First out in 2005, America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook was praised for its recipe ease, inclusiveness, and wealth of helpful information, but was also criticized for its physical production. A loose-leaf book with its pages included separately, readers found it inconvenient to assemble and its paper impractically thin. The revised edition is printed on heavier stock, and arrives with its pages already on its rings (there are two more now, for sturdiness) with only chapter dividers to insert, a simple task.

In addition, new inside front and back covers provide information on emergency substitutions, roasting guidelines, equivalent measures, and more--and a "Light Recipes" chapter has been included. Without defining precisely what "light" means--fewer fats and carbs, or a combo?--the section offers attractive all-course recipes, such as turkey chili, veggie burgers, meat and cheese lasagna, and chocolate bundt cake. Some readers will welcome the "slimming" of familiar dishes while others will find some of the manipulations--using cornstarch to thicken the sauce in fettuccine alfredo or ricotta to add body to a reduced-fat pesto, for example--unappealing. The book, however, remains a valuable kitchen tool--and one with greater convenience and durability than before. --Arthur Boehm

5 out of 5 stars Family Cookbook, America's Test Kitchen.......2007-09-27

I have been a subscriber of Cooks Magazine for over ten years now and have never been dissapointed. I am a professional Chef and find most of their publications to be great sources. My still favorite and mostly used source is the original Julia Child Cookbook based on her TV programs of years ago but this America's Test Kitchen publication,I suspect, I will use a great deal.

4 out of 5 stars Test Kitchen Cookbook.......2007-09-26

I really like this cookbook because it has good pictures and explainations for techniques with which new cooks may be unfamiliar. Putting the pages and dividers in yourself is clear and easy. The pages are a little thinner than I would prefer for a cookbook, but I just use a clear plastic page protector that one might use for a portfolio or scrapbook to keep the page I am using clean. I highly recommend it!

Amazon did an outstanding timely job getting me the cookbook. This cookbook is the very best I have ever read. I gave one to my daughter and will be ordering one for myself. Thanks.

Wish they would issue update pages with more and new recipes

I have owned many cookbooks over the years, but this one is my favorite. I have cooked for over 30 years, and I still learn techniques from this book. If you are a new cook or an experienced one, you need this book.

Covering 508 bird species found east of the Rocky Mountains, the revised second edition takes into account changes in taxonomy and uses improved photography. At the heart of the guide is a set of 646 well-made color photographs whose subjects are organized by easily discerned characteristics (e.g., "chicken-like marsh birds," such as the clapper rail; "gull-like birds," such as the kittiwake; and "upright-perching water birds," such as the common murre). The photographs are then keyed to textual descriptions of the birds' appearance, range and habitat, nesting characteristics, and behavior. Easy to use and handsomely produced, this belongs in every eastern birdwatcher's collection. --Gregory McNamee

Book Description

Introduced in 1977 and completely revised in 1994, these bestselling photographic field guides have become the birding bibles of more than four million enthusiasts. Virtually every bird found in North America is brought to life in a full-color photograph and with textual information on the bird's voice, nesting habits, habitat, range, and interesting behaviors. Accompanying range maps; overhead flight silhouettes; sections on bird-watching, accidental species, and endangered birds make these the most comprehensive field guides to birds available.

Note: the Eastern Edition generally covers states east of the Rocky Mountains, while the Western Edition covers the Rocky Mountain range and all the states to the west of it.

5 out of 5 stars National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Birds: Easter Region.......2007-09-17

The National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Birds: Eastern Region is the most comprehensive guide that I have enjoyed in many years. It has clear, concise pictures of the birds of my region with a written synopsis of each bird's habitat. I recommend this book to any avid bird lover! It is an awesome book!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent tool for birders!.......2007-09-16

This book provides excellent descriptions of the birds' physical appearances, lots of photographs, and maps of their winter and summer range. It is small enough that you could take it out birding, and has a durable cover. You will not be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Birds: Eastern Region - Revised Edition.......2007-09-09

My favorite bird watching book because all the photos are organized by color of bird and variety of birds. The plentiful information is carefully correlated but is not on the page with the photos. I prefer this when I am searching for the bird in my view. Handy is size and shape for quick browsing.

I also have the rocks and minerals guide and the guide for N.American trees.

5 out of 5 stars north american birds.......2007-07-14

the best, most informative, with clear photos instead of drawings as in other bird reference books.

4 out of 5 stars Audubon's Field Guide to Eastern Birds -- Wow!.......2007-05-22

Bought this for our son and family in the "deep woods". They've little or no background on birding. Great selection for them: sections are divided to make it easy to locate a "type" of bird (perching, diving, etc.); great color plates and good info in the text, including stuff on nesting! Girls (10 & 12) enjoy as much as do their parents.

This book is a good reference for those who want to gain more knowledge about the african american experience before slavery and after. There is so much more to African American history than being enslaved in the United States. In this book you learn a little about African civilization, slavery, post slavery and today.

5 out of 5 stars one more time!.......2007-03-08

I read this about a decade ago. Incredible insights! Well written. I am reading it again, and have given it as a gift. I will buy as many as I can afford. It is one book that must be read, for a historical and spiritual perspective of African Americans.

5 out of 5 stars Well researched, with quite a bit of bias.......2006-10-12

Regardless of Mr. Bennett's apparent biases, and sometimes lofty criticisms of white America, this book is a remarkable read. When writing about such an emotional and intense subject, I believe it is impossible to be completely objective, especially when the topic involves the oppression and suppression of your own people. That being said, the author does a good job of remaining as objective as possible throughout the bulk of the book. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about the history of black America.

5 out of 5 stars A great food research guide when planning a trip!!.......2007-08-02

How many times have you gone on vacation and you end up at some tourist trap (Hardrock Cafe,Planet Hollywood,ect...) eating the WORST food on earth? Well help is here people! My girl and I LOVE to travel and LOVE good food. That's why when planning a trip we do all the research for: attractions, museums, night life, bars, and our favorite... FOOD! Best fried chicken? Loveless Cafe in Nasville!! Later i found out that Loveless Cafe is Martha Stewart's favorite for breakfast!! I'm telling you... :)

5 out of 5 stars WARNING: You'll finish your vacation weighing more than you started with!.......2007-07-15

I remember reading a much earlier edition of this guide, probably the original not-thick volume published in 1978. I've always traveled a lot, doing genealogical research, and that pursuit takes one more often into small towns than big cities. Everyplace you go now, it seems, the fast food chains have completely taken over, but there actually are plenty of mouth-watering one-of-a-kind eateries left, if you get lucky -- or if you read this book. This edition includes some 600 establishments (200 more than even the last edition, even though another hundred have been dropped), most of them in the categories of joints, diners, parlors, and drive-ins. The idea is to find restaurants that cater to locals, that represent the essence of their region or locality, and that are low in price. Naturally, I went looking for places I had eaten myself and I found many of my favorites: Hoover's and Threadgill's in Austin, Krause's Café in New Braunfels (the best chicken fried steak in the world comes from the German heritage of the Texas Hill Country), Sonny Bryan's and Gennie's Bishop Grill in Dallas, the Frontier in Albuquerque, Pasqual's in Santa Fe, Lynn's Paradise in Louisville, the Moonlite Bar-B-Q in Owensboro, Kentucky (where some of my ancestors lived, right across the river from Indiana), and the Camp Washington Chili Parlor in Cincinnati (which, in my opinion, produces the best Cincinnati-style five-way chili in the city). Here in Louisiana, New Orleans alone accounts for five listings -- and that doesn't even include the haute cuisine, high-dollar restaurants for which NOLA is famous. (Of the places they list, Mother's is a regular stop for us when we're in the city.) But there's also Boudin King over in Jennings, Middendorf's in Pass Manchac (forty-five minutes from home; we go there three or four times a year), Brenda's down in New Iberia, and Prejean's over in Lafayette. Admittedly, there are a few other places I like, and which fit their criteria, but which aren't included; no place at all in San Antonio, for instance. But the Sterns are anxious for recommendations from their readers, so I'll probably send them some suggestions. This is a great car book when you travel -- and especially when you leave the Interstate.

4 out of 5 stars It is not a road trip without road food.......2007-07-14

No matter where you live, if you're looking for some unusual, fun and funky places to eat, Roadfood by Jane and Michael Stern will give you all the recommendations you need. This book is written so that you "road warriors" can find endless amounts of tasty treasures.

For example, if you're longing for lobster - or clams, mussels, shrimp or oysters - then head on down to Abbott's Lobster in the Rough in Noank, Connecticut. Bring a bottle of your favorite wine - and your own tablecloth - and enjoy the ambiance.

Or consider Chez Lenard Sidewalk Café and Catering in Ridgefield, Connecticut, where you can order up Le Hot Dog Choucroute Alsacienee or Le Hot Dog Garniture Suisse. Expect to be served from a man in a chef's hat with a Manhattan-style sidewalk cart.

Roadfood demonstrates how, no matter where you travel in your car and no matter how many road trips you take, there is always a new culinary adventure waiting for you right around the corner.

4 out of 5 stars fun to read.......2007-06-27

My only complaint about this book (and their other books) is too much space is devoted to the East and the South. I would like to see more entries in the West, and South West. I am a foodie and love to read about food.

5 out of 5 stars Proud user for 3 years.......2007-04-13

I've been using the Roadfood guides (and their website, which is much more comprehensive) for 3 years now. I've tried probably about 20 of their recommendations (including Nicks Roast Beef in MA, Ted Drewes in MO, Maine Diner in ME, Clam Box in MA, White Hut in MA, The Frontier Restaurant in NM, & the Capital Reef Inn in UT. All were VERY good recommendations.

The tragedy is that many of these local places close down every year for various reasons. You have to check the road food website or call the actual restaurant to make sure they are still in business and in fact open on the day you want to visit.

Book Description

In Black Feminist Thought, Patricia Hill Collins explores the words and ideas of Black feminist intellectuals as well as those African-American women outside academe. She not only provides an interpretive framework for the work of such prominent Black feminist thinkers as Angela Davis, Alice Walker, and Audre Lorde, but she shows the importance of self-defined knowledge for group empowerment. In the tenth anniversary edition of this award-winning work, Patricia Hill Collins expands the basic arguments of the first edition by adding several important new themes. A new discussion of heterosexism as a system of power, an expanded treatment of images of Black womanhood, U.S. Black feminism's connections to Black Diasporic feminisms, and more attention to the importance of social class and nationalism all appear in the new edition. In addition, the new edition includes recent developments in black cultural studies, especially black popular culture, as well as recent events and trends such as the Anita Hillhearings and the backlash against affirmative action.

The book were in excellent condition and did not take long to arrive at home earlier than expected.

5 out of 5 stars a great introduction to Black Feminist literature............2007-06-01

I knew little about the Black Feminist movement, when I first read this book over four years ago. It was part of a list of required books for a Black and Indigenous women's course through the school of Women's Studies. This school of thought has more involved in it than meets the eye. For starters, according to the very compelling and highly researched studies of Patricia Hill Collins, it came about in the face of great discrimination against, not only, African-Americans and women, but especially African-American women. They were looked down upon and objectified, due to their race, the means in which many African-Americans were forceably brought to the United States, as slaves (fodder for wealthy, white slave owners in their fields and in their children's nurseries, as well as their kitchens).

What works so well in its book is the acute insight and detail that Collins brings to her body of work. This book is really beautifully put together, and we get a sense of the evolution of Black Feminist Thought, through time. It's unbelievable to me that not more people have heard of this book, and I really think a formal movement needs to be started in schools throughout the country, to bring interracial consciousness to the masses, through literature. Read this book today.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for All People.......2004-01-26

I'm a gay white male and I loved this book! Collins does an amazing job presenting her compelling thesis, and I continue to thank Sociology in general for being the most daring, critical-thinking academic discipline ever. It's no surprise sociologists like Collins dare to speak out on gay rights issues (see her section on homophobia/heterosexism) - sociology is the only area of thought that consistently questions the status quo. In a day in age where so many (though by no means all!) African-American (heterosexuals) are horribly anti-gay and increasingly pro-greed/pro-capitalism, Collins stands out as a heroine for all peoples. I am still waiting for an openly gay hip-hop artist!! How cool would that be? I recommend this book to absolutely anyone. Five stars!

5 out of 5 stars Inspired.......2001-08-01

Patricia Hill Collins exemplifies a practitioner's and theorist's point of view on black feminism as it relates to Africa American and our African sisters. She references critical and inspiring data and quotes from a varied repetoire of authors, historians, and philosophers. The author explains the context and format of her subject upon initial reading. This book also draws commonalities among the issues and concerns among African American women and our international sisterhood (i.e., African, Carribean, etc.,) It illustrates the social and cultural values among all groups, the commonalities among the values while focusing on the African American feminist aspect. This is a must read for any person, be it woman or not, African American or other. It brings about a social and cultural understanding that is pertinent to the "holonomy" of understanding and appreciating varied cultural, social and historical values and experiences while commencing to the building of community. Please add this title to your collection of literature. You won't be disappointed; if for nothing more than to open your world to receive another perspective.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful.......2000-05-02

Collins'analysis of black feminism is an enlightening piece of literature that forces its readers to chanllenge main stream assumptions and discover the underlying mechanisms of racism and sexism in America. To create this effect, she uses a range of feminist perspectives form the calm subtleties of Angela Davis to the slightly boisterous philosopy of Bell Hooks. Nevertheless, by displaying these perspectives equally Collins shows that the struggle for equally is not an individual struggle but one that requires collectively. This book is intensely thought provoking and it is guaranteed to give its readers profound insight into black feminism.

This book is an excellent source for genealogical investigation.

My only complaint is that it arrived slightly damaged (a crushed front cover corner).

5 out of 5 stars A very useful book.......2006-07-13

This is a very good book. It has more information on more subjects and record sources than any other book I know. It is generally very easy to understand and apply, but I found, when I used it to teach a correspondence class on American research, that it was a bit overwhelming for the beginning student. It is expensive, but its contents justify its price, and everyone who takes American genealogical research seriously should own this book.

5 out of 5 stars URGENT! **SHOP AROUND FOR PRICE!**.......2006-07-03

I got this book from a reseller, A1, via B&Ns site, for about 35 bucks. NO 'sourcing fee'. 4 bucks shipping. There's no excuse for the price gouging from whomever is selling this via Amazon. Hope you get to see this review! I searched on google with 'The Source, szucs, third' for the edition. I love Amazon but this time they didn't get the best price.

5 out of 5 stars One "Source" for all.......2006-07-03

The Source (3rd Ed.), a reference book for individuals as well as research collections, provides huge amounts of materials for amateur as well as professional genealogists. In fact, in and of itself, it gives a history of the people who were and are "America."

And, when one is not using it, The Source makes a great bookend!

This is a great book for anyone reseaching their family no matter what your level of experience is.

Book Description

Originally edited by Dorothy Lobrano Guth, and revised and updated by Martha White

Foreword by John Updike

These letters are, of course, beautifully written but above all personal, precise, and honest. They evoke E.B. White's life in New York and in Maine at every stage of his life. They are full of memorable characters: White's family, the New Yorker staff and contributors, literary types and show business people, farmers from Maine and sophisticates from New York–Katherine S. White, Harold Ross, James Thurber, Alexander Woolcott, Groucho Marx, John Updike, and many, many more.

Each decade has its own look and taste and feel. Places, too–from Belgrade (Maine) to Turtle Bay (NYC) to the S.S. Buford, Alaska–bound in 1923–are brought to life in White's descriptions. There is no other book of letters to compare with this; it is a book to treasure and savor at one's leisure.

As White wrote in this book, "A man who publishes his letters becomes nudist–nothing shields him from the world's gaze except his bare skin....a man who has written a letter is stuck with it for all time."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and moving.......2007-06-08

E.B. Whites letters are honest and intimate, insightful and extremely funny. White's letters often deal with his experiences and feelings about the writing process. Because of this, I would recommend reading his letters before reading collections of his essays. These letters are as satisfying, if not more so, than any biography.

5 out of 5 stars Letters of E.B.White, Revised.......2007-01-31

I wish everyone could write as well as E.B.White! It is a great pleasure to travel with him through his life by way of his letters! This collection is museum quality art that is available to us instantly upon picking up the book!

A favorite of birdwatchers (especially those who prefer photographs to illustrations), this field guide, revised for 2000, accounts for the 544 bird species that live in the region west of the Great Plains. The clearly printed color photographs capture birds at rest and in flight; preceded by black-and-white silhouettes, the plates are organized by visually based, intuitive categories--"hawk-like birds," "pigeon-like birds," and "perching birds," for example--that make on-the-fly identification a fairly simple matter. The images are matched by clearly written text that describes a given bird, gives an approximation of its voice, and details its habitat, range, nests, and behavior. Sized to fit in a jacket or backpack pocket, this is a valuable companion for any birding outing in the region.

Note: the Western Edition covers the Rocky Mountain range and all the states to the west of it, while the Eastern Edition generally covers states east of the Rocky Mountains.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars an overall decent field guide.......2007-05-30

As a general all round guide, this book is helpful and has a place in any naturalists library. The color plates are the best of all the bird guides.
The index cross-references the color plates with the descriptions making it pretty staightforward. The cover is a durable leatherette, the binding pretty good (although the color plates will loosen up with use). The Audubon guides are definitely a step up from the Peterson and Stokes guides.

Now for the criticisms. The descriptions are far too brief and vague. An example: for the Cooper's Hawk, the voice description is:

"A rapid series:kek kek kek kek kek". Mmmm . . . Doesn't help much . . .

The summary is also 3 sentences long . . . c'mon, did the editors get tired here or what?

The descriptions throughout are not much more detailed than this, especially the voice descriptions. And trying to print out the phonetics/sound of a birdsong has always seemed pretty futile to me anyway; the most effective way of learning the signature of a bird's song is to listen to a recording.

Except for overhead photos of most of the raptors, there are almost no flying photos of all the other birds. I think this could be a much needed additon to any future editions. Feather identification is a big part of birding.

All in all though, this is the first guide I turn to when I need to know.

5 out of 5 stars Best Bird book on the market.......2007-01-13

My wife and I have been using the Easten Region Field Guide for years and found it to be the best. We recently moved to the western area and quickly realized that we needed the Western Edition. A great book for birders.

5 out of 5 stars National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Birds: Western Region - Revised Edition (National Audubon Society Field G.......2007-01-11

Very good graphics and copy. Durable too.

3 out of 5 stars Western Audubon Guide.......2006-11-10

A good book to take with you because of it's size but, to me, the photos of the birds are lacking. Although they do accurately display the bird they are lacking in detail and often, to us, don't show alternate views for better comparison and easier indentification.

1 out of 5 stars species misidentified.......2006-01-04

I regret that I cannot recommend this book because it contains easily caught errors.

I suppose that misinformation in the text is not so important. Still, on p. 21 the book claims that "Every bird has a scientific name consisting of two Greek or Latin words." The author of this book, Prof. M. Udvardy, was a respected ornithologist who would never make such a mistake, so either it happened in the revision by J. Farrand or is due to an ignorant copy editor.

Much, much worse is the misidentification of photos, which of course is the heart of this field guide. For example, photo #172 purports to be a Pacific Loon in winter plumage, but as any birder worth his/her salt can see, this is clearly a Common Loon. Likewise, photo #175 is labeled Common Loon, and the bird shown is clearly not of this species.

A field guide should be 100% accurate in species identifications and also not promulgate misinformation about scientific nomenclature. With many alternatives on the market, this is a book not to buy.
