1 out of 5 stars Table of Contents Would be Nice.......2007-09-11

I haven't read the book, so this is actually a review of the info on the book. Why is there no TOC listed? How am I to decide on this book if I don't know what plays it contains. Very bad marketing.

5 out of 5 stars Twelve Plays at a Very Good Price.......2005-10-14

This book presents a collection of the twelve most frequently studied plays along with a fairly short but well done introduction to the art of drama itself. The book is intended as a text for drama students with a wide collection of plays to be studied. The plays range from 'Oedipus the King' (first performed about 430 BC to 'How I Learned to Drive' - 1998 Pulizer Prize winner for drama.

This is the third edition of this popular book. In this edition the number of plays has been expanded to twelve (from nine) and the introduction has been expanded with coverage of Greek 'old comedy' and the theater of the absurd. Finally the section on writing about drama has been both expanded and revised to conform to the sixth edition of the MLA handbook.

5 out of 5 stars Kids can hit the ground running as storytellers with this!.......2000-11-29

This book is an excellent companion to the authors' book "Children Tell Stories." That book helps adults set up and develop kids' storytelling programs in a very comprehensive manner. This book provides stories with which to do this.

The stories are arranged by difficulty, with excellent telling suggestions alongside the text of the story. Some are even set up for tandem telling, which I find kids often want to try, but struggle to find a way to make it work.

The stories come from a variety of sources, and they are all guaranteed to please at least one of the kids in your class or group who wish to tell. As one who has coached many middle-school kids to tell their first story, I find these stories to be excellent in helping those kids who are just not sure how they should proceed. I highly recommend it for kids who want to tell and the adults who nurture this desire in them!

5 out of 5 stars great for the classroom.......2000-07-31

As an elemntary teacher, I love this book. The book contains 30 stories representing different cultures with clever plots and defined characters. This versatile book is written for beginning storytellers but can be used in the classroom in several ways. The delightful stories are great read alouds that teach students how to develope characters and build experience for their own writing. The easy to use stories encourage the natural storytelling talent of childres who love to perform. The guide along the side helps with expressions and voice inflections allowing the students the confidence to develope their own style. Another benefit of this book, although probably not the intention of the authors, is that it builds the skills reguired for the NYS 4th grade ELA exam. Students learn techniques of using storyboards, listening for details and identifying major events and seguences of a story. This is a classroom must.

5 out of 5 stars from: Territorial Tattler.......2000-07-29

If you teach storytelling to children, you'll want a copy of this book. The first 18 pages, addressed to the kids, explain how to choose, learn, and perform a story. Then follow 30 tales laid out in mouth-sized pieces, with parallel columns suggesting gestures and vocal intonations to use. Ranging from fables and folktales to short literary gems, all are appealing and accessible to the beginner. At the end of the book is a section for adults, giving both pedagogical arguments and practical suggestions for ensuring success for young tellers. Detailed source notes and additional story suggestions round out the grown up section. Hamilton & Weiss have distilled excellent advice from their 16+ years experience working with young tellers. I think self-motivated students could use this book on their own; but an adult, using the content and tone of the authors' sections addressed to children, will be equipped to start a youth storytelling group with confidence.

4 out of 5 stars All the Literature you'll ever need!.......2007-10-01

This arguably pocket-sized book has an insane amount of literature rolled into one neat little package. This 1000+ page collection has a good mix of short stories, poetry and drama from the best writers of our time, ranging from William Shakespeare to Ernest Hemingway to Alice Munroe, and STILL fits in most of my purses. If you are an English major, minor or just love literature, this is the perfect edition. The only reason it didn't get 4 stars is because the short stories could have diversified a bit from the usual suspects. I have four different collections and all of them have the same 16 or so stories.

An excellent text that includes an impressive number of poems as well as useful commentary on the art of poetry and specific terminology. This is my third time using this book.

5 out of 5 stars great anthology.......2004-02-27

This is a great anthology. The best you are going to find unless you go with one of the giant anthologies. This one is cheaper and definitely less heavy than, lets say Norton's anthology. And because it is a 'pocket anthology' it cuts out the weaker poems making this a strong group of poems.

I bought this anthology used and it was obviously a former text book. I really enjoy it. While I greatly appreciate and adore full-length classic literature, short stories are a wonderful compromise for the times you don't want to be fully involved in a novel and neither want to read twaddle. Great authors with little commitment.

Editor R.S. Gwynn has chosen really wonderful samplings from a rather wide range of writers. Many women, non-whites, non-English-speakers... et cetera, should that aspect concern you. Each piece is prefaced with a short, non-intrusive biography of the author.

Certainly, authors/stories are absent, but I don't think it detracts from the value of this collection. It really is a lovely little book into which to nestle.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars An old and uneven selection.......2001-11-06

There are a few quite good letters here, but many of them appear to have been selected either because the writer was famous or the editor was just desperate to fill the book. Nearly all of them are from before WW2 and most are from before the 20th century. As a result, most of the letters have language that would seem very stilted if used today. But even old age doesn't excuse the writing that in some cases made me cringe.

5 out of 5 stars A terrific little Compilation!.......2000-06-03

Not only has this book been a fantastic source of beautiful quotes to share with my beloved, reading through it and using some of the letters it contains as a model has helped me express my feelings for her more eloquently.

Well organized and easy to use as a reference book, this handy little volume has love letters written by a large assortment of authors, poets, celebrities, and historical figures from a wide spectrum of time periods. This brilliant selection of letters runs the gamut of the various emotions present in any romantic relationship and is divided into sections which helps in finding letters most applicable to specific situations.

Most anybody will be able to find something that applies to them personally - a nice reminder that it's all been said before, and probably better than you'll ever be able to. I'm sure I'll continue to use this terrific source of inspiration and reflection for many years to come.

-the binding ribbon is really nice for marking special letters - an added bonus!

This collection of translations of the classical Zen poets of China, Japan, and Korea includes the work of Zen practitioners and monks as well as scholars, artists, travelers, and recluses, ranging from Wang Wei, Hanshan, and Yang Wanli, to Shinkei, Basho, and Ryokan.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great selection of zen like poems.......2001-05-16

This collection of poems from various authors captures, for me anyway, the spirit of zen being. They have a immediacy which touches you directly transporting you by their power, to the situation or place they describe. Reading them is an act of meditation in so far as it directs the mind to a place of calm. Highly recommended

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Profound impact on children.......2005-10-07

When this book became available in my grade school library 45 years ago or so, you had to get on list to check it out because it was so popular. My kids today enjoy as much as I did then.

3 out of 5 stars Sme wheat among the chaff.......2004-11-04

A compilation of over 400 child-propagated chants and sayings, this book was compiled from hundreds of interviews with children and adults. It is re-issued every 20 years, and presumably updated with more modern material.
The Good and the Bad:
As an adult with an interest in such things, I thought that the book was interesting as a reference. There were a handful of somewhat obscure sayings that I had heard of, either as a childhood and an adult, and seeing these in black and white was kind of exciting. But from that perspective, I wanted more information about where each verse came from, and what might have motivated its survival. So, it's usefulness as a reference was very limited. On the other hand, it didn't necessarily do well as entertainment either, because of the sheer volume of nonsense rhymes that quickly began to blur into each other. Explicatory text between rhymes, or even between chapters, would have made the book less of a slog. As it was, I was just skimming each verse, looking for the gems. Also, this early edition of the book had some racist shadings on a few of the rhymes. As a repository of history, I support inclusion rather than omission; however, the illustrations created specifically for the book were objectionable in my mind, and the target audience is apparently children, so they should probably be purged.
It was interesting to me to noted that the customer reviews on Amazon were from three lone rabid fans, who each said that they loved the book as children themselves. I suppose that I shouldn't pooh-pooh the entertainment value for children, as the effect is similar to a collection of nursery rhymes.

5 out of 5 stars The best children's book ever.......2003-02-12

I just read the other reviews of this book and feel compelled to add that it had a similarly profound effect on my life. It is only published every 20 years--1947, 1967, 1987 and hopefully again in 2007. It is the best children's book ever--an unrivalled compilation of timeless--and non-commercial--poems and rhymes. Only Shel Silverstein has come close to achieving the same greatness. I learned the whole book by heart as a child and my grown up sisters and I still recite the rounds together when we are feeling silly. Everyone should have this book in their permanent collection.

5 out of 5 stars I thought I was the only one.......2002-11-14

I thought I was the only one who remembered this book. Its so hard to find a copy these days I was starting to wonder if I had imagined it's existence. It was this book and NOT Dr. Sydney Friedman, of M*A*S*H fame that can be credited with the gem, "Ladies and Gentlemen take my advice, take off your pants and slide on the ice." Among other things, this book shaped and validated my sense of humor.

5 out of 5 stars The best childs book I have ever read as a child.......1999-08-30

I read this book at least 100 times and I still love it to this day, 26 years later.

Karel Capek (1890-1938), one of the greatest Czechoslovakian authors of the century, and who mastered numerous forms of writing, was particularly inventive with the genre of mystery, detective, and crime fiction. In Tales from Two Pockets, however, Capek took the crime story and related forms of the genre to new levels, weaving strange, short, and powerful psychological studies of ordinary human beings caught in extraordinary and improbable circumstances. Through these intense but always fun stories, Capek moves brilliantly but lightly in the philosophical realms of human existence, exploring the nature of crime and justice, even the very concept of truth.

5 out of 5 stars Short and Sweet, with Surpising Nuances.......2007-08-08

"Tales from Two Pockets" should have a special place in the minds of its readers. That's the place reserved for works which are entertaining without being trivial, consistently amusing and delightful upon re-reading, and which appear to have been written effortlessly and on the spur of the moment (this latter characterization is probably an illusion, since even a rapidly written piece by the right writer incorporates a lifetime of craftsmanship and professional skill). The stories in this collection, which combines two different but related sets of stories ("from one pocket, then the other"), were written for Capek's newspaper columns during 1928-1929. Czech readers responded enthusiastically to these stories, which started out clearly enough as detective or crime stories but soon overflowed the boundaries of that category to become something very different: reflections on the human mind and character under duress and meditations on the nature of crime, punishment, and, most especially, justice. The difficulty of judgment which is fair to both the victim and the perpetrator is a theme returned to several times, leaving the question an open one, even in the most gruesome cases, e.g., "The Ballad of Jura Cup", in which the motive is highly personal and bizarre, or "An Ordinary Murder" in which the motive is routine but the results are unsettling. Also related to this idea is the story (from the first set of 24) entitled "The last Judgment", which seems to be the prototype of the stories in a completely different collection,"Apocryphal Tales", stories that veer off in the direction of "alternate reality" parables (this may be the story which Capek himself thought of as "the turning point" within the whole collection of 48 stories).

The second set of 24 stories is a continuous round-table conversation, organized along the lines of the Decameron. One story ends, and a thematically-related one begins (or a story is based on a stray remark or characterization in the immediately preceding story), something like a baton that is passed from one relay racer to the next. Often there is a smaller story within the larger one, recruiting another member at the table as a second narrator. From the formal point of view the most interesting of these is "The Confession", in which a priest, a lawyer, and a doctor are all told the same story by the same man over several decades - he has done something terrible (his deed is never specified) and must talk about it or implode, though he feels neither contrition nor guilt nor remorse, while he has a specific desire to avoid retribution (which is why he picks men professionally and ethically bound to keep his confession a secret). It's a large and eclectic collection of narrators that Capek creates - including policemen, businessmen of various stripes, a doctor, a priest, a "jailbird", a journalist, civil servants, and men of unidentified callings. Based on their names and their vocations they are meant to be a representative sample of inter-war Czechoslovakia's polyglot mixture of ethnicities, nationalities, religions, and social strata. This is the "social undercurrent" of these stories, an idealized picture of a hybrid, pluralistic society created by an admirer and strong advocate of T. G. Masaryk and the political system of the First Republic.

The translation by Norma Comrada is excellent, colloquial and fluent. As is her Introduction, which gives the background of the stories' creation and of Capek's familiarity with the detective-story genre in the literatures of France, England and America. On a light note, the musings of the lifelong bachelor, Police Captain Bartosek, on a kidnapped child (which I think of as "Bartosek on Babies") should be required reading for new mothers and new policemen as well. And it is in his portrayal of policemen that we see the breach that separates Capek's time and place from the grimmer post-World-War-II world of Czechoslovakia. We meet Captain Havalka who sympathizes with the inner turmoil of Jura Cup, and, more than once, we see at work the squirrel-toothed Inspector Pistora, whose unprepossessing exterior houses a first-class deductive brain that rivals that of Sherlock Holmes. Then there is Detective Holub, who, when recovering the funds that the confidence-man Plichta has defrauded from widows and lonely women, allows Plichta to deduct his "operational expenses" from the restitution he makes and admires his strict system of accounting (it is Holub who says,"We like ordinary criminals, not mysteries"). You can't imagine such empathetic portraits of policemen after 1945, though P. Kohout has tried his best to endow even State-Security policemen with admirable streaks in their characters.

The stories were written during the "calm years" of the First Republic, after the difficulties of setting up a new state had been dealt with, and before the Depression and the encroaching threats of international power-politics had arrived. This allowed Capek a respite to write as he pleased without an eye looking over his own shoulder at the political excitements of the years before and the years to follow. As Comrada points out, it would be incorrect to call these works "detective stories" or even "crime stories" (in many of them there are neither crimes nor solutions). However the reader characterizes them, it should be obvious that Capek displayed a relaxed freedom of spirit as he wrote them and took a great deal of pleasure in doing so, both of which are strongly communicated to the reader.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Stories from a Czech Legend.......2004-12-31

The fourth Earl of Chesterfield once admonished his son to "wear your learning, like your watch in a private pocket: and do not merely pull it out and strike it; merely to show that you have one." The stories contained in Karel Capek's "Tales From Two Pockets", unlike Chesterfield's watch, are worth taking out and reading again and again and again.

Karel Capek played a pivotal role in Czech arts, literature, and politics in the years of the first Czech Republic. He was a playwright and, with his brother, authored "RUR", the play that introduced the word robot to the world. His novel War With the Newts remains today one of the great pieces of dystopian fiction. His life and work during this period was inextricably linked with a strong belief in the newly born Czechoslovakian Republic. Capek's devout faith in democracy and his aversion to both fascism and communism was well known. His intimate socio-political relationship with Czech President Tomas Masaryk served as an inspiration to Vaclav Havel the artist who became president after the Velvet Revolution.

The 48 stories in Tales From Two Pockets first appeared in print in 1928 in a Prague newspaper. They were known as pocket tales because presumably the newspaper could be folded and placed in ones coat pocket after getting off the tram. Immensely popular the first 24 stories were published in book form as Tales from One Pocket. The remaining 24 stories were originally published as Tales From the Other Pocket. This edition, published by Catbird Press (which has done a marvelous job of publishing English editions of Czech masterpieces) and excellently translated by Norma Comrada, contain all 48 tales.

To call the first 24 stories detective stories would not do them justice. They do tend to involve a murder or a crime of some sort but Capek stands the genre on its head. They involve more than the solution of a crime. Capek tends to work around the crime to look and spin small stories that tell us a little bit more about human nature than about the crime business. Each story contains a snippet; they are too short to be an exegesis on humanity. But each snippet is worth reading and after you read one or two you can put them in your pocket and start all over again.

The second 24 stories each flow from one into another. Think of a group of people sitting around a table in a bar. One tells a story about a crime or some other foul deed. After one story is finished someone pipes in and announces, "I can top that". They stories flow seamlessly one to another. Again, no single story packs a huge `message' but cumulatively they are thought provoking and provocative. It should also be mentioned that the stories are also just fun to read. Capek was one of the first Czech authors to write in colloquial Czech. His writing style was not formalistic and stilted. He wrote the way people talked and his stories are all warmly told and engaging.

So, put these tales in your pocket and pull them out whenever you'd like to lose yourself for a little while in the world of little mysteries created by Karel Capek.

5 out of 5 stars great bedtime reading.......2003-09-02

great stories to read a few at a time, not necessarily in order. they are like a whimsical sherlock holmes with a definite eastern european bent. i had never read any Capek before and I think this has been a great start.

5 out of 5 stars Aptly translated into English from the original Czech.......2002-11-07

Aptly translated into English from the original Czech by Norma Comrada, Tales from Two Pockets is an anthology of 48 classic short stories by Karl Capek, each of which centers on the themes of mystery, solving puzzles and discovering deft culprits. Tales From Two Pockets is a mind-teasing, imaginative, and deftly woven collection which will aptly serve to introduce Capek to a new generation of readers, and is a "must" for anyone who appreciates a well and deftly written story.

5 out of 5 stars A fun book.......2001-01-03

I purchased this book on the recommendations of Amazon.com readers. I was not disappointed. Tales from Two Pockets is a collection of short-stories by Czech mystery writer and playwrite Karel Capek. The stories are delightful, with many humorous and unexpected twists. Each story is wholly different from the others, but all are brilliant and a joy to read.
