Excelent Resouce for Weight Loss Surgery.......2007-10-08

At almost a year out from my Gastric Bypass Surgery, I can attest to how helpful and true this book is. Paula Peck not only talks about the physical experience and process of the surgery, but also addresses the emotional changes which many people experience. The book is mostly geared towards women, as that is her experience and women constitute a greater portion of Gastric Bypass patients.

Peck talks about how scary it can be when you realize that you are hungry again. She talks about Body Dismorphia: how even though the scale says a dramatically lower number, in your head, you still think you weigh what you did when you started. She talks about ways in which she battled this and learned to see her body as it actually is.

Paula Peck explores so many of the issues that I myself experienced that if I could only recommend one book to a friend about to have Gastric Bypass Surgery, this would be that book.

I found this book to be a big disappointment. Just not what I expected or needed.

Best read pre-op.......2007-08-21

Book detailing the author's journey before and after gastric bypass surgery with tips and hints for each stage of the journey from pre-op to years post-op. I was not very impressed with the book, to be honest. The author's writing style is rather boring, and much of the advice in it is very basic and seems to primarily relate to the pre-op and immediate post-op stages--so the title seems a bit misleading. I also felt that some of it was not very good advice, based on what I've learned from years of my own research and my own experience. The author makes a lot of assumptions that everyone who is morbidly obese and/or has the surgery does so for similar reasons and has the same problems. I guess I just could not relate to much of her own personal story and felt that it was too simplistic to be very beneficial. Perhaps if I had read it pre-op instead of eight months after my own surgery I might have felt differently, but for someone who's already gone through most of the process, much of the advice and observations weren't that helpful. I felt that the section dealing with "long-term" success was much shorter and less developed than I thought it would be, and that's really what I was looking for based on the title of this book.

Loving-Kindness For The Obese.......2007-08-07

Exodus From Obesity keeps its promise. I am not obese, but count many who suffer from obesity among my family and friends. I read Exodus From Obesity because I wanted to understand their illness. I wanted to offer more than sympathy and well meant, but ignorant encouragement as they launched into their next fad diet or exercise program. What I discovered was a wealth of solid nutritional science leavened by psychological insight and Ms. Peck's abundant wit and affection. All addiction is nourished by loneliness, Exodus From Obesity offers escape from this prison, doing so with compassion and loving-kindness. For spouses and family of the obese, Exodus From Obesity provides a framework for understanding and supporting loved ones who suffer from the illness. This book was more than I had expected it to be. It was a fun read and helped me feel "normal" in a world where I struggled with weight loss. I recommend this read to anyone who is undergoing or will undergo weight loss surgery as a learning tool.

This book is completely horrible........2007-01-16

The fact that Cornuke lacks the letters PhD from his last name ought to tell you from the beginning that this book is not a credible source of Biblical archaeology. Cornuke can write a great adventure story, but this book screams more fiction than fact and reaks of irresponsibility. Biblical Archaeology is not done by taking a verse of scripture, then finding a landscape to match it. Cornuke's technique is as follows, "Oh look! A rock that is split! That must be where Moses struck the rock and water came out." The equivalent would be you walking out your front door and saying, "Look! A hill! That must be Gologtha!" This book is horrifically inaccurate and sensational, and barely believable. If Cornuke was credible his recommendation on the jacket wouldn't come from Nat'l Geographic Television. It would come from reputable archaeologists and scholars who would back his claim. Sadly this book is not credible, the reader gets duped, and he pockets your money. Look elsewhere for solid Biblical scholarship. But if you're in the mood for exciting fiction this is a good option.

In this highly readable book, IN SEARCH OF THE MOUNTAIN OF GOD (Broadman & Holman Publishers) you can go along with Bob and Larry Williams as they search for the real location of Mt. Sinai, where Moses received the Ten Commandments.

For centuries, many have believed Mt. Sinai was in Egypt and in fact a Monastery is built on this site. Yet the archeology and some other characteristics didn't fall into place. Bob Cornuke used the pages of his Bible as the guide to find the real Mt. Sinai, the altar where the Israelites offered the Golden Calf and the twelve springs of Elim.

The pages of Scripture spring to life as the reader catches the growing excitement and inspiration from every discovery. Also the reader will experience when Bob confronts a Holy God and the fact that he is standing on His mountain. "I recalled the stern admonition: 'Whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death.' (Exodus 19:12). The night before I had glibly dismissed the text--but now my heart was pounding. I felt sick. I believed at any moment a bolt from heaven would strike me down. Without thinking, I turned to Larry and barked an order, "Let's go--NOW! We have to get off this mountain."

Readers will love the armchair look at Biblical archeology from this storytelling adventurer. The photos and the information will capture your imagination and set you thinking for hours on end about the truth behind the pages of the Bible.

REVIEWING SOME REVIEWERS.......2005-09-26

I do quite a bit of reading with fairly critical eyes, and yet I don't hesitate to give IN SEARCH OF THE MOUNTAIN OF GOD five stars. It is an exciting adventure story about a very significant subject. The evidence that Mr. Cornuke provides in support of his belief that Jabal al Lawz in Saudi Arabia is the REAL Mount Sinai is absolutely overwhelming. It is an excellent book that may very well challenge some of your previously held beliefs while it authenticates the historicity of the Bible's Old Testament.

What I primarily wish to do here is to correct some remarks in three of the other online reviews which I suspect might confuse others:

A READER FROM USA states that Jabal al Lawz cannot be the real Mount Sinai because Colin Humphreys evidently claims in his book, 'The Miracles Of Exodus', that Mount Sinai had to have been a volcano (due to its burning, smoking peak, and its trembling.) Yes, that would be true, but only if one feels compelled to attribute natural phenomena to all of the miracles described in The Bible. If a person accepts that God is quite capable of transcending His own creation, then finding a "rational" explanation for every miracle is not necessary, and probably fruitless. Because the circumstances on Mount Sinai when Moses met there with God describes what we commonly associate with volcanic activity, it does not at all follow that Mount Sinai MUST have been a volcano. God may heal a person of cancer, but that DOES NOT mean that God MUST be a surgeon.

WILLIAM E. THOMPSON seems to be reviewing two of Cornuke's books simultaneously and that is bound to cause confusion for those unfamiliar with the other book. The statement that the explorers should have (admittedly) returned to the site for further investigation is in regards to Cornuke's, 'In Search Of The Lost Mountains Of Noah', in which he relates his failure to locate Noah's Ark. Although Chapter Twenty-Six ('The Blood Of The Lamb') of that book is quite moving - in which the sacrifice of a lamb is compared with the sacrificial act of Jesus - I agree that the book ultimately should have been shelved until the author had legitimate evidence to offer. But that is no reason to avoid this superior book on the discovery of Mount Sinai.

In his review, ABUJIFAN far too easily dismisses the many indicators that point to Jabal al Lawz as the REAL Mount Sinai. He fails to address many of the historic landmarks that (coincidentally?!) happen to be in the same general location as the burnt Mountain, and also the coral reef that (conveniently) connects the lower tip of the Sinai Peninsula (across The Red Sea) with Saudi Arabia and the immediate area where all of these landmarks are found! He didn't mention the existence of the water-worn Split Rock (referenced in Exodus 17:5-6 and Isaiah 48:21 of The Bible) - an astonishing find! And he dismisses the photograph of the (presumed) Golden Calf Altar as a pile of rocks that "look like many naturally-occurring formations all over Western Arabia." Well, I've lived in the Southwestern U.S. all of my life, and unless rocks form quite differently in Arabia than they do here, that formation is hardly naturally-occurring, and I find it incredible that a person with a degree in archaeology would make such a claim. And therein, I suspect, is the rub. Is this a case of "professional jealousy"? Would it bother a pedigreed archaeologist if a testosterone-laden explorer armed with just his wits and his Bible made one of the greatest discoveries in the archaeologist's own backyard? Well, I don't know the answer to that, but I DO KNOW that 'IN SEARCH OF THE MOUNTAIN OF GOD: THE DISCOVERY OF THE REAL MOUNT SINAI' is a real page-turner and a Five Star book, doggone it! That's all I have to say; I'm gonna go climb back under my rock now and wait to see who finds me first, an archaeologist or an adventurer.

I read the Search for the Missing Gold or whatever first and was VERY disappointed to see that this was basically the same story. Why couldn't they have presented the information in an orderly, systematic manner and not like a soap opera.

The good thing is that this should bring a lot of focus on the government of Saudi Arabia and why they don't cooperate with world-wide archaeology and quit acting like a medieval fiefdom.

Exciting read, low scholarship, high on Bible integrity.......2005-01-02

This is an exciting tale told from the perspective of "hands on" explorers who read the Bible as accurate in matters of history. Written as an easy read, the book is very interesting but weak from a scholarship perspective. Still, the excitement captured by the authors makes this a good book to read, particularly if you are interested in lands of the Bible.

Mr. Cornuke is a dedicated Christian believer, as evidenced from his writings and the way he uses Scripture to guide his searches. He has a background in forensics, which makes for an interesting view from which to handle archaeological evidence. His conclusions are in disagreement with the traditional route of the Exodus, which places the Israelites wandering around in the Sinai Peninsula. The problem with the traditional assertion is the lack of evidence and common sense. I give Mr. Cornuke a lot of credit for breaking with the tradition, especially since the tradition is not based upon Biblical information.

Mr. Cornuke places the crossing of the Red Sea on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula (straits of Tiran), offering as evidence Bible verses and an underwater land bridge. He attempts to excavate drowned chariots, but claimed that water was too deep. As for Mt. Sinai, Mr. Cornuke places it in Saudi Arabia. He offers some photographic evidence, for example, pictures of an altar with c calf inscribed on it. Of course such evidence by itself is not conclusive. But his assertions fit the known geography of the land a lot better than the Sinai Peninsula. I'm convinced that Mt. Sinai is not in the Sinai Peninsula, and is located likely in Saudi Arabia, although I disagree with the mountain Mr. Cornuke chose.

The book is written from the perspective of an explorer and is a fast, exciting read. Although the level of scholarship in this book is a little weak, the book makes up for this somewhat because of the "take you there with me" mentality of the authors. You really feel as if you are along with them, making the discoveries as you go through the ancient lands. If you would like a more detailed work that comes to similar conclusions (ie Sinai is located in Arabia), I would recommend the book "The Miracles of Exodus" by Colin Humphreys. This book offers a lot more scholarship, and retains the "take you there with me" mentality.

Long and boring.......2007-10-05

I have had this book in my line-up for quite some time. Every time I looked at it as a possible read I just got a sense that it would be uninteresting. Well, I have to say that my fears were warranted. This book is almost as long and arduous as the plight of the Israelites. The story itself would be better off without the huge section of dull history stuck in the middle. I did become involved in the characters to a point, but never got a true feeling of realness in them. They just never completely developed. I do have to say that I came out with a better sense of the problems that the Israelites have had to face and I am sure that was the author's purpose.

This time I read the book, my 4th to be exact, it was still as amazing as the first time. It was and remains my favorite book.

The Ode to Promise Land.......2007-04-04

One of the most powerful books of the last century, Leon Uris "Exodus" (1960) is an exiting and deeply moving novel which was written by a talented and passionate man. The best, the most inspirational parts of the book are the depictions of the historical events dealing with the origins of ghetto system, pogroms in Russia, the long and fascinating journey of two brothers from a small Russian town to Palestine by foot, the ideas of Theodor Herzl, the birth of kibbutzes in Palestine, and enormous labor of kibbutznicks to make the land fertile, to grow plants and trees where the desert, rocks, and swamps had been. Uris was also able to find the compelling words, images, and characters to reflect on the tragedy of European Holocaust, on the dramatic story of United Nations voting for partition of Palestine in 1947 and on the war of the infant state of Israel against its multiple and hostile neighbors for the right to exist and be an independent country. I took the book with me in my trip to Israel a year and a half ago and reading it while be able to see the places it describes with such passion and love, to see the land that is called "promised land" or "Holy land" WAS one of the most emotional and unforgettable experiences in my life.

Rebirth of a Nation.......2007-01-18

In the same manner that Herman Wouk's "Winds of War" and "War and Remembrance" took us through the vast event that was WWII, as seen through the eyes of a family of beloved fictional characters -- so does Leon Uris' "Exodus" carry us through the labor pains and birth of the modern State of Israel, as seen through the eyes of a family of fictional figures in that resurrected nation.

The story is huge in scope and Uris covers a lot of territory within the allotted pages. He takes us from the Jewish displaced persons camps of post war Europe, through the Zionist immigration into Palestine(much of it illegal) under the British mandate, then through the rebuilding of the land and the growing skirmishes leading to all out war for survival as the Britsh withdrew (as prescribed by the UN) and the State of Israel was birthed - and immediately and overwhelmingly attacked by the surrounding Arab nations. Miraculously, Israel overcame their attackers, survived, and even thrived.

As best I can judge from comparison to other sources, the historical sequence of events as described by Uris is accurate. The information is highly educational. More subjectively, Uris was Jewish and writes from a Zionist perspective. He depicts the Hebrews as noble, resourceful, and courageous. Generally, the Arab elements are portrayed as cruel, deceptive, cowardly, and not given to playing by the rules. The British are painted as anti-Semites. I'll leave it to the reader to root out the truth of the matter.

Uris does not neglect the spiritual aspect and the acknowledgment of the supernatural provisional and protective hand of God . . . the God of the Hebrews. Uris employs this sometimes by intimation and sometimes very directly.

The author did masterful research and presentation relating to the historical facts. However (at least in this early novel), his character development and continuity, and dialogue, is not on par with other 20th century master novelists (use Herman Wouk again for comparison). Some characterizations are overstated, others are fluid and changing, some are borderline silly. Also, Uris could have given us a little better peek at the personalities, quirks, foibles, etc. of the actual historical political and military figures of the era (David Ben Gurion is barely mentioned just a couple of times). He didn't. A shame.

Still - this is an epic piece of modern historical fiction. If you deeply love or hate Israel, this is worth the read and highly recommended.

Great historical fiction takes you back to birth of Israel.......2007-01-10

I bought this book because I've enjoyed numerous other books by Uris, and always felt he tried to do right by his historical subject. Given the turmoil that's marked Mid East history seemingly forever, I thought this would be an intersting way to learn a piece of history about which I knew little. Just how did the modern state of Israel come into existence? The answer may surprise you. Most of us know it came on the heels of the Holocaust, but how many readers are aware that England endorsed the formation of a Jewish state thirty years earlier, then reversed itself out of fear over losing favor with the Arab oil sheiks? They actually gave aid and comfort to the Arabs while trying to squash the flegling Israeli army. The US was then and now their only true ally. Even still, real assistance from the rest of the world came mostly in the form of private donations of money and supplies. Outnumbered 100:1, the fact that Israel prevailed in it's war for independence was nothing short of a miracle.
Understandably, no one should take any book at 100% face value whether sold as non-fiction or a novel. There is another side to the story. But you should come away asking some serious questions.

Good informative book. I suggest the author become a little more politically correct. However, this is still a great book and challenges our established mores which are based upon lies, deception and racism.

A very good resource.......2005-08-31

The myth of genesis and exodus and its modern untrue historical perpetuations by the current self appointed custodians of Christianity, Judaism and Islam are examined and analyzed in this 74 paged document. The author sets the record straight by linking all three to their Afrikan pagan origins and with real individuals, making historical corrections where they are due. For example there are comparisons, between what was allegedly said by King Solomon and what was actually written by Amenemope, and comparison between the biblical ten commandments with the actual written 147. There are dates along with mapping diagrams showing the approximate time of genesis and exodus and what would have occurred in truth. In addition, by showing that all involved during the alleged mass movements and cultural war fares were of Afrikan tribal descent, the author shows that biblical events that occurred were mostly Afrikan continental history, and spiritual allegory. A very good reference source with a great bibliography. For more detail see African Origins of the Major Western Religions to get an in-depth outlook on this subject.

QUITE UNACCEPTABLE.......2007-04-02

It was really quite sad to hear Avivah on NPR expound upon her approach to Biblical TRUTH. She praised the midrashic tradition as the best way to approach the biblical text wherein the text is used as a springboard to human exposition, thus making it relavant to today's world. This is typical of those who cannot accept the perfect WORD OF GOD because it steps on their delicate sensibilities, so they twist it to suit their own sinful desires. What we end up with is dross which is good for nothing. Of course we hear a lot about the passages that suit her convenience, but nothing of the passages which conflict with her preconceived ideas - AND the beat goes on ... WHO dear Avivah is going to pay for your sins?

A modern Midrash .......2005-04-01

Avivah Gottlieb Zornberg is one of the most well-known and innovative Torah teachers of this generation. The present volume consists in her weekly commentaries (Parshat HaShavuah )on the second book of the Five Books of Moses, `Exodus.' Her aim is not to expound upon the surface (pshat) meaning of the text, but rather to provide a midrashic commentary. In this she looks for hidden narratives and meanings for alternative understandings as a way of deepening our understanding of the text. Here she brings to bear her own reading in secular sources, particularly in literature, psychology, sociology and anthropology. But she relies primarily on her intimate knowledge of the traditional Rabbinic commentaries. She does not work to build some overall theory or superstructure but rather intuitively and poetically to extend the meaning of the text.
For those who are knowledgeable in Torah this book will provide a real enrichment and delight in understanding. For those less knowledgeable this book will hopefully lead to a fuller engagement with the Biblical text.

With her trademark mix of existential, literary and biblical knowledge, Aviva Zornberg is an educator of the first order. Even those who have trouble with Biblical tales--or especially those that do--will have so many allusions and educated metaphors to work with that any literate woman or man can't help but learn essential truths about life and history from this great teacher. As a writer, my only critique is that she tends to be too homogenous in her method, a very small critique in the grand scheme of things, which is always Zornberg's subject--the grand scheme of things. Highly recommended.

Serious scholarship with Attentiveness to Final Text.......2005-03-20

Childs was the first scholar to attempt to blend the historical-critical approach with attention to the final form of the text. He pays as much attention to the pre-literary theories of the text as well as taking seriously the final form of the text in order to engage the text and its most likely "original" meaning as well as what it means for us today. I also appreciated the fact that he included a section of how the Christian community has throughout the centuries commented on certain texts as well as the usage of certain passages in the New Testament. I found it very helpful and it guides you to further study the sections that we might need to study more extensively. Childs is the first one who attempts to merge serious scholarship along with the Bible's intended purpose within the believing community.

Excellent if used with care.......2002-01-03

Childs honestly admits that "the purpose of this book is unabashedly theological". As is expected from this author, his aim "is to seek to interpret the book of Exodus as canonical scripture within the theological discipline of the Christian church" (which means, of course, his version of theology). This may disconcert those who do not agree with his precise shade of liberal evangelism, especially in the sections headed "New Testament Context". However, once this hurdle is overcome, this book is packed with useful information. There are few if any thorough textual and philological studies of Exodus, and the notes here are probably the best available on these topics. The sections headed "Literary and Traditio-Historical Analysis" discuss (among other things) the Documentary Hypothesis, but Childs is not overly concerned with this aspect since he is more interested in the canonical form of Exodus. The most valuable parts are the "Old Testament Context", which discuss the meaning of the text and its relationship to the rest of the Old Testament. These sections, plus the extensive textual and philological notes, constitute an excellent commentary on Exodus and fully justify buying this book. The other parts can easily be ignored if you disagree with them.

This left me looking.......2001-12-18

I purchased this work looking for a preaching aid to help me preach through Exodus. This one left me looking for others. The strength of this work lies in its textual criticism and ancient text use. The weakness of this volume was in helping to pull the major themes from the text and to help build the bridge to today. I had a wonderful time preaching through Exodus, but I found a little volume in the Tyndale OT series by R. Alan Cole to be more helpful than this one. If you are a preacher, keep looking.

A little confusion.......2000-08-17

I should say from the start that this is a very good commentary that most readers will find very helpful. It does suffer from the general lack of focus in Childs's canonical method. Because his method includes a review of the history of interpretation of each passage, a canonical commentary on Exodus necessarily includes a discussion of source-criticism, which dominated Exodus scholarship for a century. But this is exactly the kind of atomizing approach which Childs has repudiated. This commentary proves, however, that a critical approach to the book of Exodus simply cannot ignore the features of the text which motivated the source-critics in the first place. A thorough history of interpretation does serve to raise most of the central interpretive issues in each text. Childs is a gifted exegete, however, and even with a fuzzy method the results of his reading of Exodus are impressive. Furthermore, he does place the expected emphasis on theological implications. There is a shortage of critical commentaries on Exodus. Until Propp finishes his second volume, Childs's is probably the second best complete commentary after Durham's.

This makes sense - the big picture and all of its details fit. This was my feeling as I worked my way through Hamilton's book. In fact, the discovery was not only a big relief, after scanning a number of books of its type and feeling overwhelmed and lost in issues I did not understand and never knew existed, excitement fill my heart and mind. Just enough and too much for this novice adventurer into the Old Testament.

Excellent introduction to the Pentateuch.......2007-07-01

Victor Hamilton's Handbook on the Pentateuch is a very good introduction to the Pentateuch for both undergraduates and beginning seminarians who are taking an exegesis course in Old Testament. For anyone interested in Old Testament studies it is a must. The publishing life of this text has been remarkable since it first appeared in 1982. Unlike the previous reviewer, who essentially wants a commentary on the Pentateuch, the beauty of this text is that it is not that. It is a handbook introduction - a biblical theology of the first five books of the Hebrew Bible. Dr. Hamilton is not writing for the academy, although academicians will find it useful. He is writing for the student and motivated layperson. Besides, Hamilton has already authored the two volume commentary on Genesis that appears in the New International Commentary on The Old Testament (NICOT) series published by Eerdmans. There, the reader will find concise exegesis in a verse-by-verse format. Handbook on The Pentateuch reflects what Dr. Hamilton has done best over the years - teach students Old Testament. Readers will find this to be an engaging text that reflects critical scholarship as well as a pastor's heart.

Fun, imformative, and erudite..........2002-11-23

Hamilton's synopsis of the Penteteuch is great for the biblical scholar at heart. Laypersons will also enjoy this book, as it flows quite well and keeps the reader intrigued. Hamilton's analysis of the hexameron (the work of the six creative periods) is especially fascinating, as he pulls parallels from mythological cosmogony to demonstrate that the biblical account of the hexameron is unique in many respects, but that the underlying motif is not new to other cultures outside of the Bible. Also, this book doesn't carry an ostentatious Evangelical flavor to it; it is very objective and can be enjoyed by those from all faiths.

This is the first of this series by Francine Rivers that I have read, and though it was a good read, I felt it fell a little short of the high standard she has set for herself. I guess the adage that you cant hit a homerun every time holds true. Perhaps my disappointment comes form the subject itself. The subject being Aaron, who, in many ways could be considered a poster child of Biblical failure. They Bible presents Aaron as somewhat of a "side kick". He was Moses' Tonto, if you will. And certainly one of the countless perplexing questions I intend to ask God when I stand before the throne is, "Why Aaron?" Why was he chosen to be the High Priest of the Jews? He was certainly not a mature believer and seemed a rather bad choice for the position. Was he the most prepared candidate? Surely Caleb, or even on good days, Joshua, was more qualified.

At any rate, I digress. The book is meticulously accurate, as with all of River's works, but failed to have that page turning passion that her books normally provide. It follows the life of Aaron from childhood to death and Rivers clearly illustrates Aaron's many failures and weaknesses along the way.

I'll certainly read the other books in this series. I just hope to see a return of the type narrative I've come to expect from the very gifted writer.

I loved this little book because it gave me insight into the life of Aaron and his brother Moes; allowing me to see the heart of God toward His people. The book is an easy read, but its insights will stay with you forever.

I have to admit, I have read all but 2 of Francine's books and this one took me the longest to get through. To me, it was slow and redundant, not necessarily something I attribute to Francine's writing, but more so to the biblical account of the story itself.

The repetition comes from the Isrealite's repeated loss of faith in God, which they seemed rather quick to acquire; and the severe complaints and actions that they take in disobedience to Him as a result. I found myself thinking..."again!", and then, "Again!" regarding their blatant rebellion, over and over, when reading this book. God must have been annoyed with His people (granted, the word Isreal does mean "to struggle with God"). Moses and Aaron really had their work cut out for them with these "stiff-necked" people, and there inlies the beauty of this book. The reward comes in realizing what Aaron went through over the span of his life. And I think it serves the Biblical account well in depicting the constant rebellion of the Isrealites during the first few years of their journey out of Egypt, which may not be so easily picked up on by reading a few chapter of the Bible at a time.

When I read this story in scripture, it is spread over so many chapters and books that Aaron's story seems woven throughout and somewhat thinned, therefore, I appreciate that Francine brought the events of his life together in this book.

I couldn't take any more..........2005-12-14

I checked out the audio version of this from the library, and it was one of my quickest returns ever. I have to admit first of all, I didn't listen to it all, just the first CD. This book may be mostly faithful to the letter of Scripture, but not necessarily to the spirit. The first part spent a lot of time stereotyping the Egyptians as evil taskmasters. I knew I couldn't listen through it all after it repeated for about the fourth time that Amram (Aaron's father) died by having his face smashed into the mud after he fell down. Surely, the author could have thought of some other story instead of continuing to repeat that. Also, the book spends lots of time on Aaron's unjustified jealousy of his brother Moses (whom he doesn't even know at this point in the story) and his utter hatred of the Egyptians ("hatred makes you strong"???).
I'm giving this two stars instead of one because I don't think it's fair for anyone who didn't read (or listen to) the whole thing to give only one star. Maybe this one just got off to a slow start. I have to admit I'm also into more action-oriented stories. I would like to see an actual historian or Bible scholar write a novel on a topic like this. We Christians need some truly good fiction. Somehow, I don't think this is it.

Good Series.......2005-09-10

I have enjoyed the entire series about King Hezikiah. I am reading a lot of books in this genre because they bring the Old Testament characters to life. The book I received was in great shape, so thanks to the distributor. If you enjoy this type of story, I highly recommend this series.

Treasure Now Found.......2005-09-28

In the book, there are two guys. Their names are Larry Williams, a self made millionaire, and Bob Cornuke, a retired police officer and a former Swat-team member. Larry Williams is also an archaeologist and he hears rumors that the real Mount Sinai (the mountain where god gave Moses the Ten Commandments) is actually in present day Saudia Arabian, on Mount Jabal al Lawz. They want to make sure that they are right, so they actually follow the route on which they believe the Hebrews used to get out of Egypt. After a couple of days, they realize that this must be the way that they took. Every single detail that is in the bible they find. When the get to what they believe is the Reds Sea, They go scuba diving in it. They find the prove that they need and Larry almost gets eaten by a shark.
They finally find a way into Saudia Arabian. They run into several problems like their rooms get broken into, someone is following them and their batteries are missing for their supplies. When their journey finally ends and they get to Mount Jabal al Lawz, they find that the mountain has actually been turned into a military base and is surrounded by guards. Will they survive? You have to read to find out.
I liked how the book switched between Larry and Bobs perspective. The only thing that I didn't like is how the book started the book by starting at the end and flashing back.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to research the bible or is interested in the bible.

Bad, bad book.......2005-04-22

This book is written like a 4th-rate children's adventure story. From the spy story to the lead "characters" furtive journey into Saudi Arabia to their diving expedition - it's all so full of hyperbole and exaggeration that the pictures of the book are needed to convince the reader that the trip happened at all.

The author's genius, if you could call it that, is taking real people and re-casting them as one-dimensional cardboard characters. The way these treasure-less "treasure hunters" go about the task of finding the Exodus treasure makes them appear more clueless and dumb than I believe humans could have been in real life.

In one passage, one of our heroes can't get his metal detector working. He painstakingly completely disassembles and re-assembles the machine and cannot figure out the problem. His genius partner suggests he checks the batteries. Wow, they're missing! And they aren't just missing. No, they were stolen from the machine by the mysterious unnamed spies that are constantly following the pair and attempting to thwart their journey. Right! It hurts to read this book.

Not to spoil the end of this ridiculous tale, but they don't find one ounce of gold or any other treasure. I searched on the web and found numerous point-by-point rebuttals of the "Sinai in Arabia" thesis of the book. The most concise I read was "Problems with Mt. Sinai in Saudi Arabia" by Brad Sparks. Look it up and read this free well-written paper rather than waste any time with the silly "Gold" book.

Unlikely tale with no research content.......2003-12-28

I have the hardest time getting rid of books, and every purge of the family library ends up being a long series of painful decisions. Yet I had no trouble giving away this book after the first reading.

I would like to give at least some praise before discussing the weaknesses of this book - but I have the hardest time finding any. The idea is entertaining and some of the travel scenes are exotic and unusual.

That said, the book as a whole is poor in many respects. The writing is, at most, unremarkable. The chapters of the book are poorly architected, and it is sometimes difficult to understand why one follows the other. The thesis in the story is both unlikely and unbelievable, and there is not an iota of proof to any of the many rather incredible assumptions. Finally, some of the "facts" in the story (i.e. what the authors say they actually did and saw) are somewhat difficult to believe.

I thought that this was about the narrative of a new set of biblical archeology finds along with some controversial analysis. What the book really is, is a poorly written travelogue along with the expose of a thesis whose theme is about as well proven as the idea that aliens built the pyramids.

I normally see some redeeming value, or a potential audience, for most of the books I read. In this case, I would say: by any means stay away, even shipping costs only would be too high a price for this book.

A very Odd account.......2003-10-30

I'm not sure what to say here. THis is a very odd book from someone who has written two other great books. Blum's account of the Jewish Brigade in WWI and hisa account of the Yom Kippur War(Eve of Destruction) are both marvelous and TRUE accounts of the events. Having done extensive research on te Yom Kippur war I can vouch for 'Eve of Destruction's' authenticity. Yet this book seems oddly out there.

First of all the two men this book chronicles Larry Williams and Robert Cornuke have both written books on the subject detailing their adventure. Now the problem is that the books are in conflict. WIliams book details two trips while Cornukes book is ambivlent on whether he has found Mt. Sinai and he does not mention Israeli Mossad. So this deminishes the books credibility.

The Saudi archeological service cannot be trusted. Many people claim that the book must be wrong because the Kingdom of Saudi has destributed some pictures of the painting described in this book and these painting look more european then biblical. Well who trusts the Saudi internal government, which is a dictatorship and has no reason to release evidence about this mountain, especially if such evidence will bring millions of non-Mulsims to the kingdom for pilgrimage. Saudi already has one holy cty, it doesnt want another.

THis book is not racism as some claim nor is it 'offensive' it is merely an exploration of the Biblical site of Mt. Sinai. THose that accuse this book of being offfensive because these guys had to sneak into Saudi should instead accuse the Saudis of offense for not allowing international research teams to search their country for non-muslim archeology.

The Kingdom of Saudi does have a lax intelligence service if your an ex-SWAT member and this is clear from the many terrorist attacks on U.S installations in the kingdom so those that say this cant be true because oft he vaunted Saudi intelligence service are also wrong. Saudi, as the book shows, is a fuedal state that lives in the modrn world.

Those that say the discovery, if true, has ramifactions for the worlds religions are wrong. It has no ramification for any of the religions. Mt Sinai is where god gave the commandments and the laws to Moses.

An interesting book

Truth is Funner than Fiction.......2003-08-05

This book reads like the best of the best spy novels. It flows. It has suspense. It has shady characters and heroes. Espionage,danger, intrigue, exotic locations. Biblical artifacts. And it is all true! Makes the adventure come alive and reads like a ride on a roller coaster. I have put down works of fiction half read and implausible. I raced through this book. I gave it all the free time I could spare. It was simply wonderful. And I keep seeing evidence that a movie is on the way. Step aside, Indiana. These guys are real! And they are messing around in your playground.
