Book Description
Joe Picket returns, this time to the wilds of Yellowstone National Park. Deftly plotted and full of intrigue, Free Fire is C. J. Box's best novel yet.
Joe Pickett, having recently been fired from his job as a Wyoming game warden, is working on his father-in-law's ranch when he receives a call from the governor's office. Governor Rulon-a devious but down-home politico-has a special request, one Joe knows he can't refuse. For weeks, the headlines have been abuzz with the story of Clay McCann, a lawyer who slaughtered four campers in cold blood in a far-off corner of Yellowstone National Park. After the murders, McCann immediately turned himself in at the nearest park ranger station. It seemed like a slam-dunk case for law enforcement-except that the crimes were committed in a thin sliver of land with zero residents and overlapping jurisdiction, the so-called free-fire zone. McCann had taken advantage of a loophole in the law: neither the state of Wyoming nor the federal government can try him for his crime, so he walks out of prison a free man.
Governor Rulon, sensitive to the rising tide of public outrage over the McCann case, wants his own investigation into the murders. The governor will reinstate Joe as a game warden if he'll go to Yellowstone to investigate. Joe, happy to get his badge back, even under these circumstances, agrees. However, it quickly becomes clear to Joe that McCann is deeply involved with some illegal activity taking place in the park-something tremendously lucrative and unusually dangerous. As Joe and his partner Nate Romanowski search in the unlikeliest places to find the key to the murders, they find out that it may be hidden in the rugged terrain of the park itself.

Another thriller.......2007-10-01
CJ Box des it again. Set in the beautiful Yellowstone Park and all of it's natural mystery he unfolds his complicated and personal journey to truth and preservation of nature.
This series just keeps getting better and better.......2007-09-06
I took this novel on a beach vacation and devoured it in two long, happy days. Then, magically, my husband picked it up. He rarely reads fiction, but the cover art intrigued him and I told him he'd love the Yellowstone National Park setting and the great writing.
He was captured and read it non-stop until he was done. This novel is the latest in the Joe Pickett series, but it can stand entirely alone as a great mystery. The setting, the depth of the plotting and the warmth of the characters all make for a great read.
Even for those who never, ever read fiction.
Maybe His Best.......2007-08-31
The characters and storyline were all up to Box standards. The venue was special. If the geology is correct the story leaves you chilled.
Joe Pickett is Back!.......2007-08-26
If you like the outdoors and enjoy murder mysteries, the Joe Pickett novels are for you. Guns, horses, lots of wild animals and a few dead people thrown in, make for an fun read.
The last two Pickett books were real downers with the goofy easygoing Joe of the first couple books practically becoming a vigilante. I really missed the early Joe who was happy with his family and job and somehow managed to solve mysteries in an entertaining fashion. In this book the old Joe returns. For that I thank you CJ Box.
I'd say start at the beginning of the series as sometimes events relate to things that happened in the early books. Enjoy the early books, suffer thru the "downer" books and enjoy Free Fall!
If you have worked in Yellowstone it's worth a read.......2007-08-16
Although no Dorothy Sayers or P.D. James, the author is able to keep our attention without many red herrings. I worked in the Park four of my college summers at Mammoth Hot Springs. If you worked at Old Faithful it's even better. You'll take satisfaction at finding the tiny discrepancies, intentional or not, that the author has made in describing some of the back ground, especially the buildings. I was fortunate enough to work while the original owner, Mrs. Nichols, still rode around in her limo and lived in her house at Mammoth. As all of you know, no matter where you worked, the minute you enter the Park you are "home" again.
Read this to take you back into it. Ignore the vaguely salacious character comments seemingly dropped in 3 or 4 times with regular timing to attribute versimilitude to the characters. Like many of today's mystery's the ending comes with a convoluted interaction of characters that would have been difficult to discern. Who knows, you may enjoy this genre, especially if you are from the West.

Rachel Caine rocks!.......2007-10-07
For my summer reading list, I decided to focus on the growing list of SciFi/Fantasy authors I haven't read but heard good things about. Rachel Caine's name was at the top of the list, so I went to the book store and picked up the first book in the Weather Warden series. Ill Wind (Weather Warden, Book 1) rose worthily to the challenge and then some, presenting a unique premise and a feisty heroine to boot.
Joanne is a weather warden, a human born with the ability to manipulate the weather in order to save human lives from Mother Nature's innate destructive tendencies. Jo soon finds herself in a situation which can only amount to disaster when she starts carrying around a deadly demon mark which is slowly eating away her humanity, and has been accused by the Warden counsel of murdering her boss.
What follows is a rather brilliant display of cat and mouse as Jo is forced to flee across the country and nipping at her heels the entire way is a trio of counsel Wardens and the threat of a growing and menacing storm from an unknown source--both hellbent on killing Jo. The only thing Jo can do is find her friend Lewis, the strongest Warden in the world, and hope that he can someway rid her of the demon mark. ...The trouble, however, is finding him. Knowing she should trust no one, but finding herself irresistably drawn to a handsome stranger, Jo has to decide whether or not she can trust her intuition even as she is slowly becoming lost to the intense evil power the demon mark brings.
Caine has a way with description and entertaining dialogue which make this book not only absolutely irresistible, but make the reader aware of just how much attention to detail this particular author pays to getting all of the descriptive aspects of this book just right. I found myself deeply entranced with how the author weaves the descriptions of supernatural abilities to the science of how weather works. Caine brilliantly combines present and past events with detailed narration so well that it made me feel like I was there, watching everything happen as she described.
The only thing lagging about Ill Wind's above average presentation is Jo's noticeable lack of character development. While coming across as a spunky and likable heroine, there's a certain amount of depth missing to her character. I have no doubt that Rachel Caine will spend other books in the series bringing more of a three dimensionality to her heroine. Irregardless, Ill Wind is a damn find book and I highly anticipate reading the rest of the series.
Breath of Fresh Air!.......2007-09-04
Finally something unique and original!
If you're tired of the usual sci-fi/fantasy stuff (wizards, dragons, prophecies, etc) and have been wishing that SOMEONE would come up with something new and different, then look no further!
The basic premise is that there is an organization of Weather Wardens who regulate/manage the planet's more dangerous natural disasters by manipulating the elements. You get elements of offbeat bureaucracy
mixed in with autocratic back door dealings. You get a small but good dose of the real science of weather, but not so much that you're ever bored or overwhelmed.
The inclusion of the djinn (genies) adds even more uniqueness to the stories, not to mention humor, intrigue, and ethical questions. Rachel Caine, and by extension her main character, is smart, darkly funny, and thoroughly engaging.
This series will not disappoint you. I've read all six of the books published so far in the series and every one is a gem. After reading the first one, I immediately bought the next 5 and have pre-ordered #7.
Great Book.......2007-07-09
Easy to read. It is very different than most books in the genre. I love the change of pace. I love the change of background. The writing itself is good. It wont win any awards from major award sites but I did buy the rest of the series. I would recommend this to adult HP fans.
Couldn't put it down!.......2007-07-09
I'd read Caine's vampire novels and had been incredibly impressed so I tried this series.
Wow. Wow. Wow!
No, it's not the deepest thing ever, but it's deep enough (and certainly a lot deeper than most stuff on the shelves). It's funny. It's exciting. And as with the vampire novels, the world-building is spell-bindingly impressive. Here is a world I really can explore through six more volumes and not get bored!
I'm ordering the others now. I can hardly wait to find out what happens next to these people and this world! This time, though, I'll make sure I clear my schedule so I won't be constantly telling myself, "Just one more chapter and then I'll--" and come up for air only when the last page ends. Chores don't get done that way. But the book, its characters and its world stay with you. Bravo, Ms. Caine!
Romance, Mystery, Fantasy or Weather Warden.......2007-05-20
The best thing about this book is its brevity. The author doesn't bore you with long words or complex plot twists. Then again the characters are shallow and not well developed, which helps make this a quick and forgettable read.

Second Time Around.......2007-03-07
I was pleasantly surprised by the first book in this series - 'Ill Wind' - and was somewhat looking forward to reading the follow up. It didn't take me long to lose some of that enthusiasm as I started to get the impression that Heat Stroke was going to go much more into the romance novel direction than the first book. But I persevered, because there is nothing worse than a reviewer that say, "It was so bad I didn't finish it". I do not care what you have to say about a book if you did not read it (now I will climb down off my soapbox).
Heat stroke did not turn into a romance novel, but continued the style and flair of the first book. There are elements of romance, and I would go so far as to say that it is the core theme of the book, but the story itself is about 'real' people living in a very unreal world. Most of the characters feel like they are alive. There are some exceptions. I did think the villains in Heat Stroke could have been given a little more depth. That and the cliffhanger ending are the main reasons I went with 4 stars, but I will read the next book in the series.
People who like the Charlene Harris `Southern Vampire Mysteries', Jim Butcher's `The Dresden Files' and/or Carrie Vaughn's "Kitty" books will probably like this `Weather Warden' series - and vice versa.
Heat Stroke is Hot!.......2007-02-14
This was such a great book! I am into the whole Weather Warden series. You will enjoy it!
Freaking LOVED it!.......2007-01-28
This is rare for me, because I'm usually not one to gush over a book, but I really did freaking LOVE this one! I think Caine's writing is brilliant. Just the right amount of action and humor, a little romance mixed in...just an awesome book. Rachel Caine is fast becoming one of my favorite authors.
Great world, great read one little problem..........2007-01-15
I read the reviews after reading Heat Stroke and agree with the fact that this author LOVES to tell stories. Which, for an author, is a must but there were times were I felt a little information overload.Jo is a great character, David is provacative and the fact that he's not the only love interest always adds excitment. I look forward to the next installment which I'm starting later tonight. All in all a wonderful read. Well worth the money.
A bridge, but in the right direction.......2006-12-31
I enjoyed the first installment of this series enough to dip in for the next two. I will admit to a certain trepidation, given that the first one rocketed the heroine so far up into the stratosphere [at times, literally!] Without throwing massive spoilers around, I found myself interested in the new society in which she found herself, to the point that the main "Bad Guy" seemed like a secondary story line. I have no issue with this for this one story, since I feel that the story took the right turn at the end to maintain a stronger overall story arc through the next few books, I hope.

Incredible.......2007-08-06
Jo along with David are on a mission to get to Vegas where Kevin had run off to with the most powerful Djinn ever. Back to her human form Jo is restricted to human methods of transportation. But Jonathan, the Djinn that Kevin has control of, is a very powerful Djinn, he is the Djinn master. And he knows that Jo is after him and he has never had a warm spot for her. When Jo reaches Vegas she discovers that there is a new group of people with weather powers residing there and they aren't Wardens. As always there is an enemy lurking nearby, one that Jo had faced long ago and he is out for revenge.
Chill Factor is Cool!.......2007-02-14
I love the Weather Warden series, and would not have missed any part of the story in all 5 books.
I'm feeling downright frigid.......2007-01-01
The first two books were good, but this book was kind of boring. The heroine is becoming smug and unlikable (like the last season of Friends if you know what I mean).
I feel like the dialogue is there just so she can say her zingy one liners. Which are becoming less zingy and more obvious with each page.
This book reminded me of a Katie Mcalister book. Lots of people like her, but I think she's irritating and overly pleased with herself. Similarly, both authors seem to think that just because they are amused, everyone else will be too. I think her jokes need more quality control. Personally, I would prefer it if authors didn't make a joke unless it's better than 'lightly amusing'.
I didn't connect with this book. Characters made weird decisions that were only for the purpose of furthering the plot. By the middle of this book I was skimming pages and although I own the next one, I think it will take me several months to read it.
Read Melusine by Sarah Monette instead. Or Anne Bishop (dark jewels trilogy) or Kim Harrison.
Brilliant fun - this series just gets better and better.......2006-06-05
This third instalment of Rachel Caine's Weather Warden series is a brilliant continuation of her story. Joanna Baldwin has been a human Weather Warden, a Djinn, and she's now back to being human again and, once again, doing her best, despite blundering around not knowing what's going on, to save the world.
What's been really interesting about the way Rachel Caine is building these stories is that it's not just the same or similar story rehashed each time, but she's introducing new elements with each book. In book 2 we had the Ifrit; now in Book 3 we are introduced to a whole new secret society working against the Weather Wardens. Once again Joanne's past catches up with her and influences the situations in which she finds herself - old enemies come back to haunt her.
Rachel Caine has very effectively built the love affair between Joanne and David in these three books. They are learning to trust each other, and although the time they actually spend together in this book is very limited, you get a real sense of closeness between them. Of course Joanne's other potential beaux are still out there - Lewis, Paul, even perhaps Jonathan... but it's nice to read, for once, of a sassy, modern woman being consistent and committed to her man. Even if he isn't a man but a Djinn.
Like book 2, this one ended with a definite idea of where the next book is going to go. All is not well in Joanne's world and she evidently has a lot of work to do in book 4 to rescue David from the fix he's found himself in. However, these books probably do work OK as standalone books, although I think this one might have been a little confusing if you hadn't read the previous two.
I love the way that Rachel Caine portrays her heroine - she's just so much fun. Long may she continue writing!
Great fun -- mediocre flashbacks.......2006-04-07
The third book in Rachel Caine's series is just as fun as the first two. Picking up where the previous book left off, Joanne is headed for Las Vegas to retrieve the djinn Jonathan and to stop a teenage kid from destroying the city. Complicating matters, however, is that the Weather Wardens start telling her how to do her job, and then she runs into a shadowy group called the Ma'at who give her a "join us or die" ultimatum.
The book was a blast to read, and it contained some good twists I didn't see coming. Unfortunately, the flashbacks really bring the story to a halt. Not nearly as frequent as they were in the first book ("Ill Wind"), these flashbacks have many of the same problems: they slow down the movement of the main story, at their core they're really only background material, and they never made me concerned about Joanne's safety -- because they already happened! Obviously she lived through whatever happened back then so no matter how often she got thrown into a trunk or had her head shoved under water (frequently, BTW), I still knew she'd live through it.
Fortunately, the flashbacks never became so obtrusive that I put the book down or I would have given this book four stars instead of five, but the information could have presented in a more compelling way for the reader.
Overall, however, this book is great fun. Tolerate the flashbacks because they contain a few pieces of information you need to know, but the main storyline rocks.

Putting aside the personal chaos that has plagued her, rogue Weather Warden Joanne Baldwin must rally the remnants of the Weather Warden corps against a double threat-the Djinn who have broken free from Warden control, and a cranky Mother Earth who's about to unleash her full fury against the entire world.

Another excellent story in the series.......2007-05-19
Consistent and driven, a good book; it appears that Ms. Caine is beginning to deepen the characters while simplifying their relationships, as well as focusing to a greater degree on the struggle without granting sudden god-like powers to the protagonists.
The reintroduction of certain characters in an ambiguious way lends to the charm of this particular story, and clearly is an indication of returning elements as the plot unfolds in the next books.
A good read, and I'll be continuing to follow this series!
It's Not Nice to Fool with Mother Nature! Best Weather Warden book yet.......2007-04-06
Why did I give Firestorm 5 stars? Why do I love it so much more than some of the other reviewers? First, I do not necessarily like my books soft, sappy soap operas that always have a 100% happy ending. I love adventure, adversity, excitement, humor, depth of character and a plot that encourages me to read the novel again and again to catch the nuances I missed the first time (and let's not forget sheer paranormal coolness - reading about the "magic" of the earth, fire and weather wardens is hair-raising fun). FIRESTORM has all of the characteristics I love in a paranormal fantasy and more.
Second, Joanne, David and to a lesser extent Lewis grew in this book because Rachel Caine didn't spend so much time fleshing out side characters. Don't misunderstand me, I adore Rahel and Paul, and I loved Jonathan and so many others (you hear the "but" coming, don't you?) but I was tired of the continuously growing list of characters that detracted from Ms. Caine's ability to develop Joanne, David and Lewis and the world in which the Wardens and Djinn live and the (now changing) rules by which they operate. In each of the previous books, we learned more and more about the side characters - enjoyable, of course - leaving less time for the key characters and long-range plot development.
In Firestorm, Ms. Caine is getting back to basics and that's a Good Thing. You will be amazed at the changes in the Warden & Djinn Rulebook (my phrase, not hers). Remember those commercials in the 70s with the catchphrase "It's not nice to fool with Mother Nature!"? That phrase should be the subtitle of Firestorm. I stand in awe of Ms. Caine's imagination and creativity in this novel - she's changing the rules on us, but the new rules are so fascinating I not only don't mind, I'm looking forward to reading the new playbook. Personally, I love the tension in the Weather Warden series - in fact, it's easy to see why Jim Butcher (the Harry Dresden novels, and quite possibly my favorite author) loves Rachel's books - since his books are similarly action-packed.
I also recommend visiting Ms. Caine's website, where you can read what appears to be two chapters in the sixth book, Thin Air, due August 2007. Although part of this work is contained at the end of Firestorm, more is found at Ms. Caine's website. It's worth reading, especially if you're like me and can't wait for August to arrive.
Lastly, some good news - I believe ROC has agreed to publish three more Weather Warden books after Thin Air. Go Rachel, you deserve it!
Great as part of the series, not meant to read as a standalone.......2007-04-03
As the latest installment of the Weather Warden series, Firestorm delivers a knockout punch and keeps you going. However, if this is the first book you read, you won't like it as much. Firestorm relies heavily on the books that have come before it: Ill Wind, Heat Stroke, Chill Factor, and Windfall. These books are definitely written as books that continue the same story.
However, as a series goes, Rachel Caine has written a fascinating story. Her characters are vivid and consistent; the action is always fast-paced and exciting; the world is always evolving and engaging; and the pace keeps you reading from start to finish. Bear in mind that it is a series, and you'll do fine.
Just be forewarned. This book, like the books before it with the exception of Ill Wind, ends on a huge cliffhanger. By the time you read the last page, you'll be wanting to read the next installment, Thin Air, which debuts August 7, 2007.
Rachel Caine is Great! Firestorm is Hot!.......2007-03-19
I've read all the books in this series, and eagerly await the next. Fast moving, romantic interest, magic, everything I want.
Not Exactly the Best of the Series.......2007-02-11
This was the first book of this series where I found my attention drifting, and found I was wanting to skip portions of the story. Bummer, because I SO loved the first four books.
The last few chapters picked up a bit for me, an became more of what I've come to expect from this series, but I did find that a lot of the book seemed superfluous.
For example, I guess I understood why she added the subplot with Joanne's sister and Eamon...it gave Joanne another obstacle to overcome...but, I didn't really see the purpose of that subplot or how it fit in with the rest of the book. Maybe I'm missing something?
The ending was a cliffhanger, but I wasn't as excited or angry about it as others seem to be. I felt the cliffhanger was interesting, but I'm not cursing Caine over it, good or bad.
Overall, this one seemed a bit disjointed. Not sure why. But I am looking forward to the next one.

Laconic Joe Pickett returns to his slightly offbeat duties in Wyoming's Bighorn Mountains in C. J. Box's Savage Run. Joe is called to the scene when an exploding cow kills a famous ecoterrorist, Stewie Woods, and his bride of three days, who were peacefully spiking trees. A visit to the cow's pugnacious owner leaves Joe defensive, angry, and curious: Why doesn't the rancher ask any questions about the bizarre accident that happened on his land? Then Joe's wife, Marybeth, begins receiving phone calls from her high-school boyfriend-the peculiarly healthy-sounding Stewie Woods. Stewie may or may not be alive, but his old pal Hayden Powell and other environmental activists are all turning up deceased in strange circumstances. As the body count climbs, Joe tries to sort out the bad guys, the good guys, and the truly dead guys in this sometimes funny, sometimes angry sequel to Box's award-winning first novel, Open Season. Box depicts the spare beauty and cussed individualism of the intermountain West with the sure hand of a seasoned writer. --Barrie Trinkle
Book Description
C. J. Box's debut novel, Open Season, with its memorable new hero, thrilling plot, and vivid settings, hit the mystery-book world with the force of a speeding rifle bullet-and put it "on the Best of the Year track" (Los Angeles Times). Now C. J. Box returns with a gripping and suspenseful new novel, as dramatic and brutal as its Wyoming wilderness setting.
When a massive explosion occurs deep within the forests of Twelve Sleep County and a colorful environmental activist appears to have perished in the blast, Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett is called to the scene to help investigate. Pickett soon discovers clues that lead to a deadly conspiracy-one that will test his courage, his survival skills, and his determination to "do the right thing" despite all costs.
A richly textured novel, Savage Run is an exciting confirmation of the talents of a writer hailed by Tony Hillerman as "a great storyteller."

Customer Reviews:
I love Box, but I don't love this book.......2007-07-14
I *loved* Open Season, and I certainly like the way C.J.Box writes, and I also loved the first half of Savage Run. But, I'm sorry, the plot contained too many wildly unbelievable coincidences and dei ex machina for me. Amazon guidelines and common decency prevent me from listing them, but they caused my suspension of disbelief to disintegrate completely, and I was so disgusted that I could only skim the last bit of the book.
Having said all that, I'll still read his next book, because C.J. certainly has talent. But with this book I felt much the same frustration I feel after seeing a thriller movie that has so much promise and then tanks at the end: don't authors or screenwriters let someone read the book (or see the movie) before publication, so they can find out if the story seems to fall apart and become a comic book at some point? If you want us to suspend disbelief and be completely into the story, then the story must be believable on some level.
Box still gets three stars from me because I like his writing, but *please* work out the plots a little better!
Great read!.......2007-06-29
If you like the outdoors and the West you'll love this one. A real page turner! Hated for it to end!
Savage Run.......2007-05-10
Great writer who once again came up with a great book. It's the only thing I can get my hubby to read.
Better in concept than execution.......2006-01-18
Savage Run starts off on a note worthy of Carl Hiaason - a cow explodes and blows up Stewie Woods, environmental extremist, and his bride. The book ends with a good dose of Zane Grey as the protaganist and his companions are chased to an impassable canyon by a deranged killer. In between, two serial killers take out several well-known treehuggers in particularly humiliating ways. All in all, an entertaining concept for a mystery.
What I did not like about this book was the writing, which I thought needed polish. The author seems most interested in portraying the earnest game warden Joe Pickett, a good guy but prone to costly mistakes. The serial killers are well developed also. But many characters have been drawn straight from central casting - the bad guy lawyer, the sheriff who wants to write off the crime and be done with it, the pretty wife who throws a hissy fit and stamps off to her room. In addition, parts of the book are thoroughly predictable. Will Joe forget to take the evidence and later find that it's disappeared? Is the wife upset because she was involved with Stewie in the past? You could answer without reading the book.
Another problem for me was the descriptions of the crime scenes. Although they include glaring clues, Box expects the reader to accept them as unsolvable. Whether you go along depends upon your tolerance for the highly improbable. Such as authorities wondering if the charred victim set the fire himself. Yeah. First he died, then he poured the gasoline and lit it.
Although I finished this book, I felt it didn't live up to its hype. Mine is a minority opinion though; the other members of my book club loved it.
Run to the Store and Get This!.......2005-09-11
C.J. Box's debut novel Open Season was so good I immediately looked for the sequels. Savage Run the next in the Joe Pickett series although a little bit predictable in parts maintains the high quality of the original masterpiece. The Carl Hiaasen style characters continue in Savage Run with extreme environmentalists, arrogant trophy hunting rich ranchers who have politicians and officials in their pocket and surreal criminals.
In Savage Run environmental guerrilla warfare against developers, ranchers, loggers and hunters organisation One Globe leader Stewie Woods is continuing his vandalism and destructive ways against those pilfering the environment when he is blown up along with his new wife by a bomb strapped to a cow. The cow is one of Jim Finotta's an arrogant rich and powerful rancher who as Joe finds out when he visits him is not opposed to shooting game out of season, cutting off their heads as a trophy and leaving the rest of the animal to rot in the wilderness. Soon other environmental lawyers, activists and other prominent pro wilderness people's deaths join Stewie Woods on the obituary list. An organisation long thought to have died out called The Stockman's trust has hired two killers to restore the world to the way they think it should be.
If you haven't already done so read Open Season. In fact it is a good idea to read that novel before this one as parts of that story are given away in Savage Run. Also if you haven't done so check out Carl Hiaasen novels which are similar to Box's but set in Florida instead of Wyoming.

Windfall (The Weather Warden, Book 4.......2007-05-14
In true form this book was a wonderful read, most difficult to put down.
Action all the way, as the books say you'll never view the weather as before, makes you wonder!! The next book is a must read!!
Windfall Blew Me Away.......2007-03-19
Love this whole series. This author is just great. Rachel Caine came highly recommended by Jim Buthcher, author of the Dresden Files. If you've read any of her Weather Warden series, you just have to read Book 4 to keep up with the characters and find out what happens to them.
4.5 Star Installment.......2006-12-29
Rachel Caine's 4th entry in the Weather Warden series is a page-turner deluxe, and a highly enjoyable way to spend a few hours. The scenes depicting Joanne's job at the TV station make this book well worth your time, even if you were to skip over the magic, romance, intrigue, and humor. One of the things that makes this such a good series is the rich cast of supporting characters, added to in this book with the addition of Joanne's sister. This is almost becoming as humorous a series as Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum's series!
Completely utterly blows the other books away!.......2006-07-17
I have been putting off writing this review since February. Why? I didn't think I could put into words how amazing and fantastic this book truly is. It wipes the floor with the three previous Weather Warden books, which is a feat in itself as those books are among the best ever written. Windfall is even better.
But now I'm finally writing the review. Expect it to be rambling and full of me gushing about how much I love this series and this book in particular.
I love Windfall so much, I've borrowed it from the library four times in succession, and even got an overdue fine because I didn't want to take it back. The books aren't available to buy here, so I have to rely on the library. But it's worth the fines and the borrowing since the book is so damned good.
If you've read the other reviews, you'll know the basic plot - Joanne has moved back to her hometown of Florida after quitting the Wardens, has a new job as a TV weather girl at a local station, and is trying to find a solution to her problem. What's her problem? Her Djinn lover David is draining her power. In Chill Factor, he was turned Ifrit, and is slowly wasting away to full Ifrit state. On top of this, Jo has a police officer from the Las Vegas police department on her case (he wants information about his dead partner Quinn from Chill Factor), master Djinn Jonathan has given her an ultimatum - heal David or else, her older sister Sarah turns up homeless and wanting to shack up with Jo (and meets a "cute British guy" who is not what he seems), Jo is still pregnant with a Djinn child forced onto her by David and she is forced to wear stupid foam outfits at her job and is continually hit on her by her sleazy weatherman co-star.
All these plot elements add up to one fantastic story - and this is only the tip of the iceberg. This all escalates into something much larger as the book goes on. It seems like too many storylines to follow at once but it's all woven together easily and will keep you riveted.
On the character side of the things - all the favourites are still around. I was glad to see that Lewis still had a major part in this story, he's one of my favourites. I'm also glad Rahel is still in it, and I'm surprised at how much I like Jonathan (I hated him in Heat Stroke & Chill Factor). The new characters are great too - even though Jo's sister Sarah is annoying, it's hard to hate her. Cherise, Jo's sidekick in weather presenting hell is one of the best new characters introduced to the book in ages! She's cute, perky and hilarious. Her and Jo's banter lightens the more darker serious tone of the book (I'm so glad she's going to be in Firestorm!). Eamon, otherwise known as "cute British guy" (a name given to him by Jo and Cherise) is a two dimensional character who is very very interesting. What disappointed me is that Marion was left out of this installment, and that they brought Kevin back. Kevin REALLY annoys me, he's so tiresome.
Some scenes of Windfall left me in tears - especially most of the (limited unfortunately) scenes with Jo and David. I'm a David fan, so to see him transform into something horrible is just awful - their relationship is heartbreaking and one scene near the end of the book had me crying. I'm kind of worried that it's over for them now, but we'll find out in Firestorm. This book is much darker and much more serious then the previous books, and is full of action. It's non-stop, there's no boring scenes. The humour is still present - most of Jo and Cherise's adventures at their job are amusing, and the "great mall expedition of 2003" bit had me laughing.
Well, I did ramble and say how much I loved this book. I truly do. It's the best of the series (maybe to be surpassed by Firestorm?), and Rachel Caine continues to impress me with her writing skills. The Weather Wardens are my favourite book series of all time, and Windfall definitely is one of the best books I've ever read. You absolutely need to read the previous books before cracking into this one, they provide backstory for the events of this one.
I'm eagerly anticipating Firestorm (September 5th!), and more from our fiesty heroine Jo. Well done Rachel Caine!
A worthy continuation of a great series.......2006-06-07
This book is the cause of great tiredness today - I tried to stop reading it at 11pm last night when wanting to go to sleep but it had become so exciting that I couldn't sleep and had to pick it up again, finally finishing it at 1am.
Book 4 of this excellent series is slightly different in that some time has passed since the end of book 3, rather than it being a non-stop roller-coaster ride of Joanne's life. She's now working as a sidekick on a weather channel, living in a nondescript flat and not using her weather powers at all to prevent a power lobotomy. David, her seriously weakened lover/Djinn, has to spend almost all of his time in the bottle as he's draining her powers and is on the verge of becoming an Ifrit.
This story focuses rather more on Joanne and how she deals with different situations without using her powers. The usual list of characters are there - Lewis, Jonathan, Paul, Rahel, Alice, David and Ashan, but we also meet her sister, her sister's new boyfriend and a policeman who was a former partner of Quinn's.
There's a kind of subtext in this book about good and evil - yes, Quinn was evil but he also had some good. Another character who appears good turns out to be evil, but he also has some redeeming features. Although overall this series might come across as a battle between good and evil that's not always the case - yes, the wardens are manipulating the weather to prevent loss of life and damage through natural causes, but we learned in the last book that the Ma'at believe that the wardens have actually increased the problems from the weather due to their interference. We learn more about this at the end of the book as we discover the underlying reason that things are going wrong.
The romance between David and Joanne is still there in this book, as is the little surprise that David left for Joanne in the last book, but the story focuses more directly on Joanne. When the book finished I found myself breathless, waiting for what was coming next (I have several more months to wait for it to be published, unfortunately) but also slightly disappointed in the direction Rachel Caine had taken with a couple of the main characters. I shall wait and see how the follow-up pans out and if she brings these new threads into the story in a satisfactory way. Somehow I think she well, she hasn't let me down so far.
Overall this is a very good book; the dialogue is perhaps a little less sparkling than normal, but there's plenty of action and the characters keep growing, including Djinn who are so difficult to understand, Jonathan being the most impenetrable of them all. I recommend this series highly, although I think it's probably best to read them in order.

Thin Air.......2007-09-29
Another installment of the "Weather Warden" series has our heroine, Joanne Baldwin trying to outwit and outfight a demon. The story begins with Joanne waking up in a snow storm, without her memory. And, did I mention she was naked as well. Not to worry. It all goes downhill from there.
fast, exciting and fun read........2007-09-20
Rachel Caine has done it again. The "Weather Warden" series are one of the most enjoyable finds of this past summer. The characters build with each book, creating a smooth, continuing flow starting from Book 1 and continuing through Book 6. The read is fast-paced and action-packed up to the end. I look forward to all of her additions to come in this series. For those that look at Rachel's list of songs that she listens to while writing, check the tunes out on itunes. Some of them are fantastic finds! Thanks for one of the most enjoyable tornadic rides of the summer!! It makes one wish they knew a real djinn.....
Okay, so lets just super glue it back together........2007-08-30
I have been looking forward to this book since Firestorm came out. I had just finished reading the first 5 books in 5 days and I totally loved the series and have been just dying to find out what happened next. Since Rachel Caine pretty much had the whole Weather Warden world torn apart at the end of the last book, Thin Air had great promise. Lets face it, after 5 books a series can start to get kind of moldy. So the gigantic mess-- the loss of Joanne's memories the change in the Djinn/Warden relationship, the death of Imara and David's new place in the world -- presented an opportunity to build something totally new and different.
There were several great things going on at the start of this book that were not exploited. Joanne's memory loss offered a chance for a clean slate fresh start, nothing like waking up naked, freezing and with amnesia and then being confronted by two hot guys with spooky powers to get things off to a quick start. Next her ability to pick through other people's memories would have been a great way to expose and explore hidden motives in other characters. I would have liked to have seen Caine go a little deeper with Eamon since he is just so sociopathic, I would have liked to have understood his relationship with Joanne's sister a little better. Or to look into Louis and see more of what makes him tick. But instead we just get a quick recap of what has gone before. And the "evil twin" demon with all of Joanne's memories - what a great missed opportunity to explore some relationship alternatives with Louis without Joanne dumping David (who I totally love). It would have been great fun to watch the demon's evil machinations first hand from the demon's point of view and then we could have left Joanne stewing trying to prove her identity for a bit longer to build the tension.
While I enjoyed this book, like an obligatory cross country ride in a totally hot vintage car, it ended up feeling like more of the same old world superglued together cracks and all -- when it could have been a mosiac making something new and interesting from the salvaged bits and pieces.
Another Outstanding Entry In The Weather Warden Series!.......2007-08-22
You know, unlike some other authors who write longstanding series, Rachel Caine continuously develops her characters in each book, even this last one where Joanne spends much of the story adjusting to new unfamiliar powers and trying to regain her memories. Firestorm ended with the djinn Ashan forcibly tearing Joanne's memories from her. This books picks up from there and we find out a demon has captured those memories and is now impersonating Joanne. So, our intrepid heroine is once again on the run from those she loves. Granted this is true in every Weather Warden book thus far, but with the way the author writes, the storyline never gets stale. Other reviewers have commented on the fact that Caine spends a good portion of the book having Joanne relive things that happened in the previous books. I didn't mind this though because Joanne actually winds up learning more about herself through other people's memories of her. You also learn alot more about other characters than previously known. I also liked that Caine brought back Eamon and Sarah, and that Joanne learns much more about her sister than possibly she ever really wanted to learn. My one criticism would be that I felt the ending was a tad rushed. Other than that, I can't wait for the next book. I just wished we didn't have to wait until next August for it.
A fast read but a bit of a let down..........2007-08-21
I've enjoyed the unique, intriguing, and well-written Weather Warden series from the beginning and wholeheartedly recommend this series, as well as Ms Caine's other series (Red Letter series: Devil's Bargain, Devil's Due; Morganville Vampires series: Glass Houses (Book 1), The Dead Girls' Dance (Book 2), Midnight Alley (Book 3)).
Unfortunately, Thin Air is a little bit of a let down from the other books in the series, even though this book starts off with a blast, and the action rolls on from there pretty much without a stop. The excitement of learning how Joanne has come to lose her memory and why spurs the reader to continue reading. Along the way, we see much more of the interaction among the Wardens, among the Djinn, and even between David and Lewis and the perpetually sulky teen, Kevin. All of which is good.
So why the disappointment? you ask.
The notion of the evil twin, as also commented by other reviewers, is a long-established one. That's not to say old ideas can't be given new life, of course. Alas, Thin Air doesn't really take the idea and run with it. In fact, once I read how and why the evil twin came to be and its purpose, I was strongly reminded of the shapeshifter in Patricia Briggs's book When Demons Walk. The creature in Ms Briggs's story had essentially the same reasons for why it did what it did as the evil twin in Ms Caine's book.
In addition, while I was overjoyed to discover the resurrection (so to speak) of a character, I wasn't so enamored of what that brought: Joanne's new power. That did seem somewhat convenient.
The one true twist was the entire scenario involving Eamon and Sarah. I confess I was never a big fan of the these characters (well, yes, of course that's the point; what I mean is the reappearance of these 2 unlikable people seemed out of the blue and didn't appear to serve much of a purpose except to throw a wrench in the works and to showcase Joanne's new power), but it looks like we'll be seeing more of them next. I'm hoping both Sarah and Eamon will be dealt with in a somewhat permanent manner.

Book Description
A thrilling tale of suspense, vengeance, and murder, featuring Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett. This one will break C. J. Box out to a larger audience.
J. W. Keeley is a man with a score to settle. He blames one man for the death of his brother: Joe Pickett. And now J. W. is going to make him suffer. Spring has finally come to Saddlestring, Wyoming, and game warden Joe Pickett is relieved the long, harsh winter is finally over. However, a cloud of trouble threatens to spoil the milder weather-local ranch owner and matriarch Opal Scarlett has vanished under suspicious circumstances. Two of her sons, Hank and Arlen, are battling for control of their mother's multi-million-dollar empire, and their bitter fight threatens to tear the whole town apart.
Everyone is so caught up in the brothers' battle that they seem to have forgotten that Opal is still missing. Joe is convinced, though, that one of the brothers killed their mother.
Determined to uncover the truth, he is attacked and nearly beaten to death by Hank Scarlett's new right-hand man on the ranch-a recently arrived stranger who looks eerily familiar.
A series of threatening messages and attempts to sabotage Joe's career follow. At first, he thinks the attacks are connected with his investigation of Opal's disappearance, but he soon learns that someone else is after him-someone with a very personal grudge who wants to make Joe pay . . . and pay dearly. Compelling and suspenseful, In Plain Sight is a crackling novel from one of today's best mystery writers.
Customer Reviews:
Love Wyoming.......2007-06-23
I bought the first book because it takes place in Wyoming (I have vacationed in the Montana/Wyoming areas many times) and love the way C.J.Box describes Joe Pickett's surroundings. That and the plots keep me buying the next book when it comes out. All have been excellent reading.
Typical C.J. Box Book, Which is Not a Complaint.......2007-06-20
Box's Joe Pickett stories are pretty much all the same -- clearly structured battles of good versus evil. Box has an ability to raise strong emotions in the reader, by painting the characters in unsubtle hues. When his characters come on screen, so to speak, you can almost hear the boos and hisses or, conversely, strong cheers. None of this is to take away from the sheer pleasure of reading a Box book. His descriptions of the Wyoming ranges in all their beauty, if not fury, alone make the books worth reading. The plots are fast-moving and the intensity is as furious as a spring Wyoming hail storm. You can count on Box to deliver a good read, and this one is no exception.
In Plain Sight.......2007-05-26
This book is a great read. I discovered C.J. Box novels and couldn't get enough. I didn't read them in order so I purchased the entire series and reread them in order and loved them the second time around even more. The characters are very real and engaging. The main character, Joe Pickett is an interesting person and the reader feels like the know him.
Very good, and fun.......2006-12-31
C.J.Box has been writing Joe Pickett novels for about a decade now, or close anyway. The character is an interesting mix of the Old West and modern life. He's a Montana State Game Warden, so he carries a Glock .40 caliber pistol, drives a pickup, and uses the computer and the telephone to communicate. But you get the impression that the character would rather be riding fences and rounding up strays on the plains, working as a cowboy in the 19th Century. The books are pretty clearly detective novels, but the main character has more than a bit of Wyatt Earp in him.
In this outing, Pickett's involved in a dispute between two brothers who are squabbling over the ranch they both grew up on, now that their mother's disappeared. Their mother raised them to hate one another, and so the ensuing feud quickly assumes epic proportions, with the whole town siding with the one of the other of them. Meanwhile, a stranger approaches town, bent on exacting revenge from Pickett for imagined wrongs he thinks were inflicted on him by Joe.
It takes a few chapters for this book to pick up, but when it does the pace is right where it should be. I wouldn't recommend this book to someone who hadn't read the previous Pickett novels: Nate Romanowski makes an appearance, and the above-mentioned stranger is part of a plot thread from a previous book. If you understand that this is part of a series and should be read as such, then I can tell you that this is a good entry in the series.
Pick it!.......2006-12-02
This is the sixth installment in Box's superb Joe Pickett (Wyoming Fish and Game Warden) series, and a dandy of a story! Once again, Joe Pickett, the lovable and underestimated Fish & Game Warden in Wyoming's Twelve Sleep County is caught in the crosshairs (literally and figuratively) of a local ranch family dispute and the grudge of an ex-con who has targeted Joe and his family for alleged wrongs in the past. Opal Scarlett, the revered and despised matriarch of a local ranch family, disappears after exchanging words with a local fishing guide, as well as Joe Pickett. Opal's disappearance is investigated by the local sheriff, whom Joe believes to be incompetent and politically motivated. An ex-con,
who believes that Joe instigated the murder of a villain in a previous
novel, leaves a deadly streak across the country before setting his sights
on Joe and his family. Thrown into the mix, because Joe is never
depicted as even close to perfect, is Joe's family; wife MaryBeth, who has begun her own time management consulting firm that is doing well financially but takes MaryBeth away from home; Joe and MaryBeth's teenage daughter, Sheridan, whose best friend is the granddaughter of the missing Opal Scarlet, and who draws Sheridan into the icky web of the Scarlett
family, and the presence of family friend (and falconer) Nate Romanowski, who may or may not have committed a gruesome murder to protect MaryBeth, with whom he has developed a strong attachment. A convoluted story, written in Box's lovely style, which lyrically describes the desolate beauty of Wyoming, and then, in the next breath, lays bare the unflinching violence of life on the high plains. Highly Recommended!
