No power; no running water; no modern day resources; completely surrounded by water. It was like a third world country and a war zone. The outside world was misled to believe that all 550 people inside the hospital had been evacuated. No one knew they were there. They could hear the helicopters flying overhead and see the rescue attempts nearby at the Superdome. They shined flashlights out the window at night with the hope that someone would see them. Thirty-something people would gather and hold hands in prayer with the hope of even a word of rescue. They waited and waited. But no one came. They were cut off from the outside world completely Disconnected.

      4 out of 5 stars Phonics Poetry.......2007-01-09

This book provides teachers with selections that will support fluency instruction as well as a beginning for the word study that is part of a balanced literacy program. Children enjoy the fun poems and the rhyming provides support for the struggling reader. Helping to develop comprehension is also part of this book. Children use words from the poems to complete sentences. Children use context clues to help complete the sentences.
Teachers looking for pieces that provide fluency practice for students in a easy to use format will enjoy this book.
It would have been helpful for this book to be in an 8 x 11 format to allow teachers to easily copy the pages.

5 out of 5 stars Hooked on Phonics Poetry.......2006-08-13

I have found this book to be an excellent teaching resource for young readers. Several teachers that I have spoken to about the book echo my sentiment.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best, but not the worst.......2006-07-23

If you are looking for poems that contain more than three words from a word family then this is not the book for you. Most of the poems only contain two or three words from the word family being focused on. The author gives many additional activities for working with word families, but I purchased this hoping for poems with many words from a word family to focus on with my first graders. Although, overall it is a well organized book.

Charlie Trotter's eponymous Chicago restaurant is one of America's finest. Awarded Outstanding Chef by the James Beard Foundation in 1999, Trotter has also published a number of cookbooks celebrating his unique cuisine. Charlie Trotter's Meat & Game, a welcome addition to his professional cooking series, follows the approach of the previous books: glamorously oversized and beautifully illustrated with color photos, it presents recipes--100 plus, in this case--that showcase Trotter's remarkable cooking. Most readers will want the book for armchair fantasizing rather than cooking from; the recipes almost uniformly require hard-to-find or costly ingredients (sometimes both) and painstaking preparations. But Meat & Game presents Trotter at his most imaginative; anyone interested in refined and magnificently conceived American cooking will treasure the book.

In chapters devoted to game in all its manifestations--from antelope, boar, and grouse, to hare, partridge, and quail (and including also lamb, pig, rabbit, and duck, among others)--Trotter offers his glorious specialties. These include Sweet-and-Sour Braised Lettuce Soup with Foie Gras and Radishes; Steamed Pheasant Breast with Hen of the Woods Mushrooms, Black Trumpet Mushrooms, and Alba White Truffles; and Roasted Scottish Hare Loin with Green Garlic, Braised Tiny White Leeks, and Caper-Cornichon Egg White Vinaigrette. Trotter offers suggestions for substitutions (Venison with Mole and Cashew Vinaigrette can be made with beef, chicken, pork, or, interestingly, lobster) which, improved practicality aside, offer an expended sense of dish-creation Trotter-style. With wine notes, a section on "basic" preparations such as Shellfish Oil and Dried Pickle Chips, and a glossary, the book revels in a great chef's food dreams, which all can, in imagination at least, share. --Arthur Boehm

      Book Description

After nearly two decades of practicing his art, Charlie Trotter has established himself as one of the true visionaries of modern American cuisine. In the past two years alone, Trotter has received the Outstanding Chef and Outstanding Restaurant awards from the James Beard Foundation, and his Chicago restaurant was named best in the world by the Wine Spectator. His first cookbook, published in 1994, broke new ground with its stunning food photography, exquisitely wrought recipes, and deluxe format. With nine books and an award-winning PBS cooking show to his credit, Trotter hasn't looked back. CHARLIE TROTTER'S MEAT & GAME finds the chef in top form and, like the wines from his restaurant's renowned cellar, perfectly paired with the feast at hand. Exotic meats like pheasant, duck, wild boar, and venison take their place alongside ever-versatile lamb, pork, and chicken; and such robust fare proves to be the ultimate platform for Trotter's synthesis of French technique, Asian minimalism, and improvisational verve. Start off with a classic refigured—French Onion Soup with Shredded Pork, Goat Cheese Brie, and Sourdough Croutons—and then segue to a study in color, texture, and aroma with the Smoked Squab with Israeli Couscous-Stuffed Tinker Bell Peppers and Chocolate Vinaigrette. Introduce pleasant hits of spice with a Cumin-Corriander-Scented Lamb Tenderloin, tempered by the cool, tangy finish of a Cucumber-Yogurt Sauce; and for those for whom one way, even two, is never enough, the Foie Gras Five Ways awaits. Whether you put this book to work in the kitchen or admire it with your feet up, just don't take your eyes off Trotter—you may miss where American cuisine will be tomorrow.

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2004-07-09

If you live in Chicago and love to cook... this is an amazing book. A lot of the ingredients may seem hard to find but it seems that Treasure Island has all of the items.....

Even if you don't follow the exact recipes you will be inspired....

4 out of 5 stars Give this to your hunter.......2003-10-25

He/she won't be able to pull off the recipes by him/herself, but you can put them onto some small task .... say, making a plum sauce to dribble over the final product ... to keep them out of your hair while you do the heavy work. In fact, think of these recipes as team projects ... that's probably the only way to get everything to the table at serving temperatures. Your hunter will beam with pleasure. You will be a god/dess in his/her eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Don't try this at home!.......2002-10-16

Have you ever traveled cross-country to Chicago just to dine at Charlie Trotter's? I have, and it was one of the best meals of my life. This book and the others in the series are great at giving you a feel of what the real thing is like. The pictures are outstanding and the combinations just wow you. But if you think for a moment that any cookbook would allow you to duplicate what Charlie does, you are mistaken. Some cookbooks are for those who want to follow a recipe and duplicate it. This is not one of those. This is for people who want to understand the Chef's unique cuisine and appreciate it for the art that it is.

      5 out of 5 stars Meat & Game Extravaganza!.......2002-08-17

More of Trotter's high output of creative, skilled dishes with exotic ingredients, sauces and minimalist-Asian accent. Continues the 10-Speed Press tradition of well done cookbooks, with superior photos, text and in Trotter's case, two photographers scenic photos lining the pages.

These recipes are certainly difficult if not impossible for the average home chef, or even the sophisticated amateur gourmet as well. The ingredients are exotic and difficult to obtain (no source help is provided at all) and the techniques and difficulty of steps for each entree are staggering.

Not to despair however, for the interested gourmet. As Trotter himself suggests: "think of the recipes as interpretations found to be particularly pleasing. Look at these pages for inspiration and fresh ideas, then make the dishes your own, either by substitutions we have offered or through the endless possibilities evoked by the foodstuffs themselves." Further, nearly all recipes include suggested substitutes, e.g. for the Asian=Glazed Wild Boar Chop he suggests pork, lamb or chicken.

Especially attractive to this reviewer is the enormous collection of game: from grouse to partidge to quail to antelope, buffalo, venison, et al. Excitement from such as: "Roasted Chestnut Soup with Foie Gras, Cipolline Onions and Ginger," "Grilled Pheasant Breast with Wild Strawberries, Pistachios, and Apricot-Curry Sauce," Smoked Squab Breast with Israeli Couscous-Stuffed Tinker Bell Peppeers,Ennis Hazelnuts, and Savory Chocolate Vinagerette," "Asian Glazed Wild Boar Chop with Kimchi, Burgundy Carrots, and Their Puree."

True to his inspiration of fusion, he combines Western European technique without sauce, and in their place consistently and creatively replaces with Vinaigrette or Emulsion.

Suggest interested also check out Mark Miller's "Red Sage," Trotter's "CT Cooks at Home," and "How To Cook Meat" by Schlesinger.

5 out of 5 stars A great addition to my crochet book collection!.......2007-10-07

This is a great book to have and I'm glad I bought the book. There are some interesting and different edgings that I had never seen. I was also surprised to find some actual patterns in the book, which I've never seen in a book on edging. I would recommend this book to both beginners and the more experienced crocheter.

3 out of 5 stars Beads, Chapter Four.......2007-04-01

I found Chapter Four on Bead projects lacking in clearly defined instructions for working the beads in. And this chapter was the reason I purchased this book. At the very beginning of the book in Instructions, there is one paragraph devoted to "Beading Needle". I find this confusing. So I am left hanging on how to perform this element into my projects. Other than this, the book set out accomplishing what it was intended to do.

      4 out of 5 stars Good book!.......2007-03-14

This book ha lots of different endings, all kinds of them. I think it is specialy good for a beginner!

      5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-03-09

If you have lots of time and lots and lots of yarn, this book is for you. There are so many beautiful edges and trims in this book. Many are very complex and literally eat up a lot of yarn. Worth the effort involved.

      4 out of 5 stars A bit patchy.......2007-03-03

I originally purchased this book because of the stunning lace coat on the front cover. Although I don't do a lot of crochet--I'm less patient with it than with knitting--I do believe that crocheted lace is second only to bobbin lace in beauty, and I wanted to see and read the pattern. Although I wasn't as taken by the front of the garment as I was by the almost swing-coat look of the back, I could easily see its being modified to fall in a more direct line from the shoulders and sans buttons. This would give the coat a more graceful and less confined look from the front. I would also add the lace edging to the opening of the front panels for a more uniform appearance. Done in a large gauge white cotton or linen thread and made full length, it would make a stunning coat to add texture and drama to a plain satin wedding gown. One might add white pearls to the edging, using the book's instructions on pages 53-60 to do so.

I also liked the beaded wrap. It would make a quicker piece for a person, like myself, with both less patience and less time to devote to a project and give one a chance to learn beaded appliqué at the same time.

Less thrilling was the green pullover. I simply couldn't imagine any woman who would be willing to have bulk added to her upper arms and hips by an edging of the type presented. I know I couldn't afford it! Even the model looked a little "bulked out," and we all know how thin they usually are. I did like the lacy look of the sweater itself, however, and might try the project without the edging illustrated, perhaps substituting another less bulky edging as a finishing touch, like one of the beaded edgings represented on pages 53-60.

I also didn't care for the purse. Everyone seems to have to come up with a purse pattern these days, and this one definitely had that "obligatory" look.

The scarf with the little dolls decorating the edges was very clever. A talented crocheter could probably make these little ornaments very unique and distinct, individualizing each scarf for the person intended to receive it. Such a scarf would be well received as a gift by most women or girls.

The general edging patterns seemed too bulky and awkward, although this may have been the degree to which the samples were enlarged to visualize the pattern or to the fact that some of the yarn used to make the sample had been untwisted, presumably during the process of creating the work. Of all of them, I was most impressed by the bunnies. I could see this edging making a great favorite of a child's scarf, hat or coat. They were quite "dear." I also liked the interlocking rings, partially because although the concept is quite simple, I don't think I'd ever have thought of it myself. They were very clever.

In all, if you're a beginner, I probably would look for another book on crocheted edgings. If you're experienced, some of the projects are well worth the cost of the book, especially if you work creatively with them. Certainly if you've already collected most of the books on crocheted edgings, the two I mentioned in the paragraph above (bunnies and rings) are worth at least a look.

A bit patchy, but not bad.

        Book Description

Why do social movements take the forms they do? How do activists' efforts and beliefs interact with the cultural and political contexts in which they work? Why do activists take particular strategic paths, and how do their strategies affect the course and impact of the movement? Social Movements aims to bridge the gap between "political opportunities" theorists who look at the circumstances and effects of social movement efforts and "collective identity theorists" who focus on the reconstruction of meaning and identity through collective action. The volume brings together scholars from a variety of perspectives to consider the intersections of opportunities and identities, structures and cultures, in social movements. Representing a new generation of social movement theory, the contributors build bridges between political opportunities and collective identity paradigms, between analyses of movements' internal dynamics and their external contexts, between approaches that emphasize structure and those that emphasize culture. They cover a wide range of case studies from both the U.S. and Western Europe as well as from less developed countries. Movements include feminist organizing in the U.S. and India, lesbian/gay movements, revolutionary movements in Burma, the Philippines, and Indonesia, labor campaigns in England and South Africa, civil rights movements, community organizing, political party organizing in Canada, student movements of the left and right, and the Religious Right. Many chapters also pay explicit attention to the dynamics of gender, race, and class in social movements. Combining a variety of perspectives on a wide range of topics, the contributors' synthetic approach shifts the field of social movements forward in important new directions.

"An important collection, integrating studies of consciousness, collective identity and culture with studies of state and organizational structure and strategy. Each chapter marks an advance in our understanding of social movements."

-Sidney Tarrow, Maxwell Upson Professor of Governmetn, Cornell University

"This wide-ranging and thoughtful collection is a showcase for the talents of a younger generation of social movement scholars. It bodes well for the future of the field."
--William A. Gamson, Professor of Sociology, Boston College

"Meyer, Whittier, and Robnett have compiled a stimulating, rich, and theoretically groundbreaking set of articles. This is 'must reading' for anyone interested in theoretical advances and shifts taking place in the social movement field."

An erotic and controversial tale of seduction and obsession from the best-selling author of Exit to Eden. Belinda is the ultimate fantasy. A golden-haired object of desire, fresh and uninhibited. But to Jeremy Walker, a handsome and famous 44-year old illustrator of children's books, Belinda is a forbidden passion, both beguiling and bewitching.

        Book Description

"Who was she?" That was the first thought that came into my mind when I saw her in the bookstore.

        Who was she really?

She's Belinda. She's sixteen years old. She's the object of one man's ultimate fantasy. And she's one of the most "uniquely sensual and provocative" heroines to emerge from the "fearless" imagination of New York Times bestselling author Anne Rice.

"Call her the It Girl of contemporary fiction. Whatever the venue, she's never too squeamish to reach out and touch it."-Rolling Stone

"Her voluptuous prose draws readers into an erotic landscape where the sensual delights are dark-edged...and utterly compelling."-Village Voice"A wry and richly textured diary of 'forbidden love.' A compelling blend of mystery and romance."-Kirkus Reviews

"Easily one of the most natural storytellers on the modern scene... Belinda is certainly her most controversial to date."-San Francisco Chronicle

5 out of 5 stars Much better than the Sleeping beauty trilogy!.......2007-09-11

If you were disappointed by the lack of story/plot/character development in Anne Rice's Sleeping Beauty Trilogy, Belinda is exactly what you are looking for. It's one of the most erotic books I've ever read, and unlilke the Sleeping Beauty books, the focus is on the story and the characters, and the language is sensual but never pornographic. The mystery element of the story is likewise very compelling, and I had a very hard time putting it down.

5 out of 5 stars Rice at her best.......2007-08-31

I've read this novel five times and each time I adore the book more and more. It blew Lolita out of the water, no question as far as the story goes. Rice has shown us that not all love and sex is wrong because these characters do not die in the end. They live!
I read that Anne rice's son Christopher was writing a film script for this novel in the 80s but I don't know if it will ever be a film. This novel being made into a film is a horrible idea.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, A Romance Novel for Men!.......2007-01-25

While many have called Belinda erotica, the only truly erotic content would be supplied by the reader. When sex occurs, one can almost feel the shades being drawn; the reader is not allowed into that private realm. This book is a romance, pure and simple. The kicker, of course - and what sets this apart from other romances - is that it is written from the male protagonist's perspective.

Let me reiterate that, because it is important and bears repeating: This is written from a male's perspective. And no, he doesn't describe his quivering chest or give the reader any other reason to doubt his gender or sex. Indeed, if the reader allows himself, he cannot help but be drawn with Jeremy - the protagonist - into love and obsession for Belinda.

If your a man AND a hopeless romantic, pick this up today. But, be forewarned. As other here have noted, this book is not for the repressed or puritanical. But then, very few creative works are.

        5 out of 5 stars A Great Book.......2007-01-22

This is one of my all time favorites. You will love it. The story flows smoothly and keeps your attention. Rice doesn't jump all over the place. It is a sweet story that you can't put down, because you want to know what will happen next. You won't be dissappointed.

2 out of 5 stars Couldnt get into it.......2006-03-19

I guess it's because I'm a guy....but the idea of a 44 year old childrens book author falling for a 16 year old girl was rather creepy for me. Why would a world renouned author turn into a pedophile?

Umm...yikes. Wish I would have flipped through this one before I threw my money down. It's hard to fault Ms. Charton for her enthusiasm and inventiveness, but this book isn't for everyone. I found many of the designs to be gimmicky and over the top. All in all there's nothing in it for me. Maybe for the do-it-yourselfer? Design professionals looking for elegant treatments, look elsewhere.

        5 out of 5 stars Inspirational !!!!!!!!!.......2004-03-24

I recently moved to Little Rock and found myself searching for draperies for my home. Unable to purchase quality window coverings I began searching for the newest and most creative ideas. The book " The Window " offers the most wonderful treatments. It has given me great ideas in fabrics, hardware and even fun ways to decorate my home. This book will definitely
give a kick start to your decorating dreams.

5 out of 5 stars This book is Killer.......2004-02-09

If you are looking for beautiful and innovative ways to dress your windows, this is the book you have to buy. So many other drapery books are so blah. This one is gorgeous, after you glean all of the ideas you can from it, you can place it on your coffee table and share it's beauty with your guests. Not only did I find great ideas in this book, I so enjoyed reading the stories that the author/designer wrote about each of the clients whose homes were featured in the book.

I found this book to be the most inspirational decorating book I've ever bought. It is so full of great ideas and wonderful pictures. I love how directions are put step by step in the book. This is well worth your money.

        Book Description

Despite years of reform, a persistent achievement gap remains between students in urban schools and elsewhere. Recognizing that goal setting and good intentions cannot close the gap, the authors provide a research-based synthesis of the dynamics that contribute to urban students' academic achievement patterns. An overview of human development in the urban context sets the stage for outlining what needs to be done to improve teaching and learning. Themes the authors develop and explore include historical and present social dynamics, cultural differences, pedagogy, opportunity to learn variables, physical and social environments, and the need to change our perception of at-risk students to students with resiliency.

Urban school reform strategies are being developed by legislators, educators, educational researchers, teacher preparatory institutions, community leaders, and parents. The reform strategies that we adopt must address all pertinent issues if these urban students are to fully contribute to a democratic society.

5 out of 5 stars Suggestions for bridging the cultural divide.......2004-07-05

Compiled and edited by Belinda Williams, and now in an updated and revised second edition, Closing The Achievement Gap: A Vision For Changing Beliefs And Practices focuses on the necessity for educators becoming more sensitive to the worldviews of disadvantaged students and incorporating this awareness into their curriculums and teaching strategies for such students. The contributors persuasively argue that teachers, principals, and policy makers must learn about cultural perceptions of human development; apply this knowledge to professional development and comprehensive reform; and then aligning political and educational policies accordingly. Very strongly recommended reading for the frontline classroom teacher, Closing The Achievement Gap also offers specific suggestions for bridging the cultural divide through vocabulary instructions, opportunity-to-learn strategies, and school-level organizational reform.
