5 out of 5 stars The tragedy of the Moor.......2007-05-25

Othello is one of Shakespeare's strongest plays. Certainly Iago is one of his strongest villains. This story is about the differences between good and evil and the struggle that goes on within any persons soul when choices have to be made. Iago is so masterfully portrayed that I felt strangely disturbed when I finished this play. Other characters in the play are also wonderfully portrayed. This is certainly one of Shakespeare's greatest tragedies.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2006-08-13

This book is great for people that have a difficult time understanding Shakespeare. The side notes are more elaborate than most of the other editions and they include an act by act summary so that you know exactly what's going on and don't get lost in all the wording.

1 out of 5 stars Absurd And Overrated. .......2006-07-15

For the most part, I really do like Shakespeare's plays. But this one play I consider an utter flop. It would seem any time romance is involved, people tend to make the material more than it is. Sometimes it works, but sometimes it fails miserably. The most annoying thing about this play is that except for Iago, all of the characters are major simpletons. And while this may work in comedy (like it does in Shakespeare's "The Comedy of Errors") it does NOT work here. The sotry revolves around Othello who marries Desdemona to the disapproval of many parties, including Roderigo who wanted Desdemona for himself. Basically Iago (the so called villain) is willing to help destroy Othello supposedly to aid Roderigo. While Iago is supposedly a villain, the truth is any reasonable person in Iago's shoes would have been angered. (1) He was turned down for promotion in favor of Cassio, and everything from the play indicates that Cassio is Iago's inferior. (2) He has reason to believe that his wife has been messing around with Othello AND Cassio.) While some people have tried to write this off as another lie, this isn't too sound seeing that Iago expresses these reasons in a soliloquy where this no point whatsoever in being dishonest. One of the major annoying things about this play is that everyone keeps saying how nobel Othello is, but nothing in the play really justifies this. And as term 'noble' keeps repeating, it ends up sounding increasingly sarcastic. (Not unlike the way Antony destroys Brutus by the repeated term of 'honorable'.) Anyway, it doesn't take long for Othello to show his hypocrisy. He claims to love Desdemona, but the truth is it would seem more that he is just sexually attracted to her. (Most of you saw the "Titanic." And Rose's fiance Calvin SEEMED nice at first. But he didn't love Rose. He was only attracted to her and saw her as a piece of property. Later, he didn't have any problem with slapping her or firing gunshots in her direction. Jack LOVED Rose, and he sacrificed his life so she could live!) I think "Romeo and Juliet" is overrated, but AT LEAST Romeo LOVES Juliet, and he kills himself because he thinks she is dead. If Othello loves Desdemona, why is he so ready to jump on the issue of adultery? Iago manipulates Othello so much it is laughable. And here the devil would have such a great time confronting Othello with his own hypocrisy. (1. Iago has reason to believe that Othello has been messing around with his wife. 'Shame to him, whose cruel striking, kills for faults of his own liking!' (2) Even in "Dante's Inferno," crimes of passion and adultery are the most lightly punished ones in hell.) Iago continues to walk Othello through his degeneration until Othello becomes guilty of the unforgivable murder of someone he CLAIMED to love for something she didn't even do. Othello proves himself to be the most repulsive and unsympathetic protagonist in any of Shakespeare's writings. By the way in "Excalibur" King Arthur SAW his wife sleeping with Lance A Lot and he could NOT bring himself to kill them! In "King Lear," Albany's wife Goneril is plotting his death AND messing around with Edmund. And he remains calm and just doesn't kill his wife! In "The Scarlet Letter" Roger KNEW Hester was cheating on him, and he remained more respectable: "Even if I imagine a scheme of vengeance, what could I do better for my object than to let thee live...Live therefore and bear about thy doom with thee in the eyes of men and women in the eyes of him who thou didst call thy husband." I find it most fitting to conclude with a quote to Othello from Slayer: "Hell Awaits."

5 out of 5 stars Deliciously villainous........2006-01-04

Out of all the villains Shakespeare has crafted, Iago and Richard III take the cake. What I love about Iago is his passion for evil. While Richard III is evil because he wants something, it's sort of detached while simultaneously sexual. Iago's brand of evil is passionate and emotional. Some might say that Othello was Shakespeare's greatest hero, and therefore his downfall was the greatest tragedy in Shakespeare. Whatever the case may be, it's a riveting read and a definite must for anybody even remotely interested in Shakespeare.

5 out of 5 stars Shakespeare's best Villain.......2005-06-26

Is there any other character in all of literature who is as calculatingly evil as Shakespeare's Iago? His jealousy over being passed over in favor of Cassio engenders a revengeful scheme that turns jealousy into a weapon used to destroy the noble Othello. Here innocence and trust is contrasted with pure manipulation and evil in what is one of Shakespeare's most revealing tragedies. The characters act exactly as they would be expected to based on the overriding quality that they represent. Othello is wonderful Shakespearean drama that ranks among his greatest works.
The Folger Library editions are my favorite. Each page has a facing page that explains obscure terms and helps as a handy reference to make reading the plays pleasurable and educational. These paperback editions of Shakespeare's works are a great value and fit in your pocket.

As my first introduction to Shakespeare working in a senior high school collaborative English class, this book helped me enormously with its Modern Day English interpretation on one side of the book and the Shakespearean writing on the other which follows the regular novels. This proved to be a lifesaver!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding, Absolutely Outstanding.......2006-01-31

The Play, the Book, the Format---all outstanding, absolutely outstanding...With the original text on the left page and a modern easy to read and understand text on the right, Shakespeare reads like a Vince Flynn novel--well, almost. It really opens up the story, the ideas, the characters and the struggles. (Iago is still reprehensible! In any time, in any format!!) And in Act 5, "Othello" turns into a page turner, like a modern day novel. Who would have ever thought it!!! Good way of doing it, well done. The Bard is alive and well...And we are all the better for it.

    Book Description

In a period of ten years, Shakespeare wrote a series of tragedies that established him, by universal consent, in the front rank of the world's dramatists. Critics have praised either Hamlet or King Lear as the greatest of these; Ernst Honigmann, in the most significant edition of the play for a generation, asks: why not Othello? The third of the mature tragedies, it contains, as Honigmann persuasively demonstrates, perhaps the best plot, two of Shakespeare's most original characters, the most powerful scene in any of the plays and poetry second to none. Honigmann's cogent and closely argued introduction outlines the reasons both for a reluctance to recognize the greatness of Othello and for the case against the play. This edition sheds new light on the text of the play as we have come to know it, and on our knowledge of its early history. Honigmann examines the major critical issues, the play in performance and the relationship between reading it and seeing it. He also explores topics such as its date, sources and the conundrum of `double time'. 'Honigmann's extensive knowledge illuminates this play at every turn, making this the best edition of Othello now available.' Brian Vickers, Review of English Studies

4 out of 5 stars Arden Shakespeare "Othello".......2007-09-28

As mentioned on my review of the Norton Critical Edition of "Othello," I purchased the two versions together so I could put together an online version of the play for a project my professor has been working on for some time now. Personally, I like this version better than the Norton one because it keeps the British spellings, but for the purpose of the project the spellings are being made into the American spelling. Overall, it's a good edition and, as with the Norton edition, came at the suggestion of my professor.

5 out of 5 stars Great guide to one of Shakespeare's best tragedies.......2007-06-16

I have never intently read Shakespeare before, but enough people told me that I needed to read "Othello" that I decided to break down and buy a copy. Everything about Shakespeare I find intimidating, so with much trepidation did I buy this critical edition of "Othello". Needless to say, this work is AMAZING. Not only does Dr. Honigmann give notes along the way to help the reader interpret what the characters are saying, but he also provides an extensive introduction outlining Shakespeare's sources, some possible motives, and some character criticism. He also provides one of Shakespeare's main sources, a short story written by Giraldi Cinthio, and in this short story he provides notes that link it directly to the text of "Othello". I am completely sold on "The Arden Shakespeare" series, and will continue to use it in the future. A definite buy!

    4 out of 5 stars helpful.......2007-01-15

I have my degree in English... I like reading and teaching with this version as "help" not as a substitution. It gives a clearer understanding to Shakespeare for people who have difficulty with it.

    5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!.......2006-04-22

Though I am not a particular fan of Shakespearian work, I instantly fell in love wioth Othello. This play is one of the greatest things ever written. Never has a playwright combined love, extreme decpeption, jealousy, anger, and fear in a play like Shakespeare has in Othello.

Even if you are not a fan of Shakespeare, I highlky recommend this play.

If you do not wish to read the play then I would recommend going out and renting or buying the movie "O" with Josh Hartnet, Julia Stiles, and Mikih Phifer. I would rent/but the 2 disc version because the second disc includes the original silent version of "Othello" from the 1920s.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent edition of one of Shakespeare's best tragedies........2004-07-20

"Othello" is one of Shakespeare's most popular tragedies, and since most people, even those who have not read or seen the play before, probably already have a basic idea of the plot, I will keep my synopsis short. The military general Othello is a Moor, a black man, who has just married a Venetian woman, Desdemona. Theirs is a marriage of opposites in many respects - race, age, upbringing, etc. - and yet they have overcome all this and are happy with each other. But Iago, perhaps Shakespeare's most infamous villain, is determined to ruin Othello, who has promoted another man, Cassio, to the lieutenancy, a position Iago feels should have been given to himself. He therefore sets about poisoning Othello's mind against his chaste and loving wife, convincing the Moor that Desdemona has been unfaithful to him with Cassio. The events that follow lay out one of the most masterful and heartbreaking examples of dramatic irony.

While I am not usually one to go in for tragedies, I do thoroughly enjoy this particular play. The story is expertly woven, with each twist in the plot simultaneously wrenching the reader's / viewer's heart. We know exactly what is going on, even though the characters do not, and this is what makes "Othello" such a very tragic story. And yet, in the end we are left with a sense of resolution and justice, not merely empty sorrow, and perhaps this is what appeals to me about this play.

Nevertheless, I do not think the play is perfect (though my 4-star rating here is in comparison with Shakespeare's other works, and not drama in general; against most other drama I would award it a 5-star rating). While I do think Iago is a brilliant character, I cannot help thinking that his hatred for Othello seems rather disproportionate to the wrongs he thinks have been done against him. He is upset over not being given the lieutenancy, but is this reason enough to bring about so many deaths? There is also the fact that Iago suspects his own wife, Emilia, has been unfaithful with the Moor, but Iago has no actual proof of this. However, this disproportionality is one I am willing to overlook for the sake of enjoyment of the play. What bothers me slightly more is that Othello, presumeably a very intelligent man, would allow a mere suspicion to grow into such an intense state of jealousy when he has no definite proof of his wife's infidelity. One would think he would do some investigation for himself, rather than being content to have Iago feed him all the "facts."

I now wish to comment on the particular edition of this play that I read - the 1993 "New Folger Library" printing, edited by Barbara A. Mowat and Paul Werstine. I have read several of of the Folger versions of Shakespeare's plays, and have found them unbeatable as far as making Shakespeare's works accessible to the layman. The book is laid out with the text of the play appearing on the right-hand page of each two-page spread, while the left-hand page contains textual notes that are of tremendous help in understanding the play. Words and phrases that have become obsolete since Shakespeare's day are defined clearly, and any allusions that would not be obvious to a modern reader are also explained. The fact that one can access these notes without having to flip back and forth through the pages makes it much easier to maintain one's place and train of thought.

Another thing I like about this particular edition is that it contains the entire play. Two versions of "Othello" were published in Shakespere's day - a Quarto, which was a small and slightly condensed version, appeared in 1622, and the longer Folio version was published in 1623. Each version is slightly different, containing bits and pieces not present in the other. This printing of the play contains the entirety of both versions combined into one, with brackets around those words that appear in only one or the other of the original printings.

In addition to the play itself, this book contains an excellent introduction, with information about the play, the language of the time, drama in general, Shakespeare himself, theater in Shakespeare's day, a bit about his other works, and some editorial notes on this particular edition of "Othello." Thus, even the rankest newcomer to Shakespeare will not be at a loss here, though the book is equally suitable for those already familiar with Shakespeare and his works. At the end of the book is a brief but interesting and well-written essay entitled "Othello: A Modern Perspective" by Susan Snyder which offers further analysis of the play. I highly recommend the Folger editions of any of Shakespeare's plays to all readers. They are wonderful for use in the classroom, and also make it much easier to delve into Shakespeare on one's own.

    4 out of 5 stars Aimless Shakespeare.......2007-03-17

This book has many great ideas, but as a high school English teacher I found it lacking as a teaching guide. Essentially, one has to cobble together aims and learning objectives, not to mention learning standards, for him/herself. Its best feature is that the lessons, while not complete lessons for those of us who teach, are creative, original, and fun for students. Yet given the cost of this teaching guide, more of a companion, I felt it came up short.

5 out of 5 stars Great for lesson planning.......2006-03-24

I'm an English Education major and as I'm just starting to develop lesson plans and units, this book has come in handy. There are a ton of great ideas and worksheets ready to be copied and used in the classroom. This book also believes in the idea that students learn through doing; therefore many of the lessons focus on performaning the plays to understand them. I almost wish I was in high school again just to participate. The section on teaching sword fighting was particularly interesting. I highly recommend checking this book out.

5 out of 5 stars Reluctant seniors loved the Othello unit.......2003-11-25

I teach an English 12 class for regular high school students. They complained about the Othello unit, until I used this book. We begin the unit with the swordfighting exercise at the beginning of the book. It's a scary leap of faith, but the kids love it. Buy extra dowel rods.

I only used the Othello part of the book, but it was great. The kids were worried about not understanding anything in Othello at first, and I didn't translate a word. They created meaning themselves and did very well.

The final activity--a performance and promptbook--was a huge success. That's the activity that students felt was most worthwhile from the entire unit. They not only enjoyed it, but also they learned something. Much more fun than correcting essays, too!

    5 out of 5 stars Student's (and a teacher) love it!.......2000-12-15

This was a great approach to teaching Twelfth Night (have not use the Othello part). Pre-reading, reading activites, daily assessment, actitivites to grade, everything--even daily lessons plans (for block or regular scheduling). I bypassed the lessons on sword fighting because I didn't have time, but they looked interesting. One complaint: to do everything planned, it takes over a month. The author does include shorter lesson structures if you are in a time crunch.

I used the guide for a class of seniors and juniors in April and May -- it kept them interested and coming to class. It was invaluable and saved me many hours of planning. Reproducable pages are included. I just ordered the Hamlet version and can't wait to use it.

    4 out of 5 stars A useful tool.......2000-05-16

I teach Shakespeare on both the high school, and college level. I found this book to be useful in getting across the ideas in Twelfth Night, and I plan to use it next year to teach Othello.

The ideas are clear and inventive. My students responded positively to the activities that I used from this book and came away with a clear understanding of plot, characterization, and language. The only negative comment I have is O'Brien can get a little flighty once and awhile. She stretches some activities from the artistic to the downright silly and acknowledges this herself. I wouldn't recommend using this book in its entirety, however there are a number of useful things to be used in it.

Keep in mind this book is meant to teach Shakespeare through acting. If you are the quiet, hide behind the podium type this book may not be for you.

    Book Description

Othello, a Moorish general in the service of Venice, has married Desdemona, beautiful daughter of a Venetian Senator. But Iago, Othello's malignant ensign, is determined to destroy their happiness. Cunningly bending the greatness of Othello's nature to his own purposes, Iago persuades the Moor that Desdemona is unfaithful to him. Tormented in a hell of jealousy, Othello moves inexorably toward the destruction of his innocent wife and himself. This great tragedy confronts the mystery at the heart of evil and contains some of Shakespeare's most magnificent dramatic verse. The play is performed by Don Warrington, David Threlfall, and the Arkangel Cast.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific for understanding the play.......2007-01-05

As a high school English teacher I struggle with students' bad attitudes toward Shakespeare. Forget reading it aloud! They have no idea what they are saying, and it is painful for all of us. And having them read it on their own is a joke, as they will stop after a page because they can't understand what they are reading.

This unabridged, dramatized reading of Othello is a perfect solution for anyone who wants to read and understand Shakespeare in his original vernacular without reading some kind of "updated" version. The characters are distinct, the pace exciting, and the included music really sets the scene. You could just listen to the CD, but if you're not familiar with the story or you have trouble with Shakespeare, I would follow along with a text as well. And of course, listen to it more than once because you will pick up new ideas or images each time--I know I do!

I have purchased this product twice (once on tape and once on CD). I would love to have a whole Shakespeare set of these!

Seventeen wide-ranging interpretive essays are reprinted. Contributors include Samuel Johnson, William Hazlitt, T. S. Eliot, Kenneth Burke, Lynda E. Boose, Mark Rose, and Patricia Parker.

BRIGHT, CHEERY, AND THE SCARIEST WOMAN ALIVE

Too-shy Yaya is no match for the clever manipulations of the latest transfer student, Megumi Hino–Hino-chan–whose bright, optimistic exterior shields a perfect storm of selfishness, jealousy, and sadism. Hino-chan has her tentacles in all aspects of Yaya’s life, including her budding relationship with nice-guy Moriyama and a strange unspoken animosity with rakish, ex-rock star Shôhei. Perhaps Yaya’s aggressive alter ego Nana can cut Hino-chan down to size . . . especially when Yaya is pressured into signing a legally binding contract with her arch enemy!

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Nana strikes again!.......2005-12-07

Yaya is getting closer to Moriyama, but wouldn't you know it? A fan of Moriyama, Megumi, is determined to tear the two apart with her fake stabbing kindness. Poor Yaya doesn't have the nerve to stand up to Megumi, but her alter ego, Nana, does!

I think this manga is great!! ^_^ The story still continues, and it keeps you hooked. lol I just love Yaya's alter ego Nana serve justice to evil doers! This manga has a little romance, action, and alot of kick butt rock too! Also the story has good message about gaining courage and believing in yourself. I'd recommand this manga up for a good read!

3 out of 5 stars THIS GIRL IS EVIL.......2005-12-04

Megumi Hano can't stand the fact of thinking that Nana got the best of her, whether through brains or brawn. So she's out to settle the score and take revenge on her for coming between her and her crush Moriyama. She enlists Yaya in her quest, (not knowing that Yaya IS Nana) by commanding Yaya to break into the principal's office to seek more information on her enemy. She's also such a good pal that she takes advantage of Yaya's aspirations to be a singer by telling her that her father runs a talent agency and can get her started as a pop idol. Just wait till you find out what kind of work she's really signed Yaya up for! Things get worse when old enemies Moe and Seri join up with Hano.

Othello is a entertaining but not very original manga. You're annoyed with Yaya for being so timid about everything and being picked on with no retaliation, but you also cheer "Justice is done!" along with alter-ego Nana when she beats the snot out of the evil-doers that are abusing her. But there hasn't been much character development over these first four volumes. The character of Hano is portrayed with remarkable disgust by the author and makes a really good villain. You can't wait till Nana puts her in her place over and over again. If you're just looking for some light entertainment, this would be a good manga.

        Book Description

This edition of Othello reprints the Bevington edition of the play accompanied by six sets of thematically arranged primary documents and illustrations designed to facilitate many different approaches to Shakespeare. The text includes tracts on marriage, travel literature, military manuals, maps, ballads, royal proclamations, early modern descriptions of Africa and the Middle East, nineteenth-century scripts for performances of Othello, and scenes from contemporary re-envisionings of the play. The primary documents contextualize race and religion in the Renaissance, gender relations, military life, the passions, the notion of the "Other" in early modern England, and the afterlife of Othello on the stage.

ROCK & ROLL WOMAN GIVES ME THOSE ROCK & ROLL BLUES

Timid Yaya is the victim of every bully in school, but she has a secret kept even from herself: She has another personality named Nana, who is all too willing to kick butt. While nice-guy guitarist Moriyama begins a tentative romance with Yaya, the constant appearances of brash Nana reveal the truth about his would-be girlfriend. And soon Moriyama’s charismatic professional-musician friend Shôhei takes too much of an interest in Nana’s killer singing voice . . . and body! Can Nana resist the very man Yaya has idealized all her life?!

        Customer Reviews:

        3 out of 5 stars PERSONALITY WARS.......2005-10-07

As Yaya's feelings for Moriyama increase, she feels torn between him and her love (infatuation) for Shohei, the lead singer of the now defunct band Juliet. If only she knew that Shohei, sans make-up and entourage is now pursuing her alter ego, Nana! And who is Nana pursuing, you might ask? It seems like the long ago dreams of Yaya, as she tries to muscle in to Moriyama's band, the Black Dogs. Shohei tries to convince her that he wants to manage her career and get her a break into the business, but is he sincere? Maybe you should ask his pet alligator who acts like a woman scorned! And not all of the fans of Moriyama's fans are happy about Nana hogging the stage. Enter Megumi Hano, Black Dog super-fan and Moriyama-stalker who slaps Nana in the face over it and replaces Moe and Seri as Nana's #1 enemy.

While the first and second volumes of Othello were charming and funny, I'm beginning to wonder where this book can go now. Hopefully, it will develop a bit more than it did here. It seems to be playing awfully close to "average" manga level. It's still a good book, but it could be better.
