4 out of 5 stars The Haunted Hotel.......2006-12-19

The book The Haunted Hotel by Ron Roy is part of the A-Z Mysteries series. I have enjoyed many books written by Ron Roy. In The Haunted Hotel there is this ghost that terrorizes the hotel and three kids try to figure out who the ghost is. The main characters are Josh, Dink and Ruth Rose .The book is set in a hotel. It shows how hard it is to be a detective.
My favorite part was when they found out who the ghost was. The book is very exciting and fun to read. I recommend this book for people who like mysteries. That's what I think of the book.

Ron Roy is a person that loves mystery books. I am glad he made those books because if he didn't then I wouldn't be thrilled by any other book.

Great stories, written well and keep your interest. A definite keeper for your collection! The only bad thing is I wish it were longer.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely True Spooky Stuff.......2006-06-16

Yet another example of Ms. Kermeen's talent for scaring up a terrific true account for her readers. Written in a breezy, informative and oh so fun style, this is a keeper. In my estimation, Ms. Kermeen is one of the top writers in the field today. No one does it better!

Oh Yes! She ranks right alongside Troy Taylor, Leslie Rule and their ilk.

1 out of 5 stars Not Reliable.......2006-06-07

Ms. Kermeen's information on The Myrtles is seriously flawed. Sarah Mathilda was not murdered. She died from yellow fever (according to historical record) on July 21, 1823. Her children, a son and a daughter - not 2 daughters - died July 15, 1824 (James - yellow fever) and September 16, 1824 (Cornelia Gale - yellow fever). They certainly did not die from the result of poison. The 3rd child, Octavia, lived much longer, got married, and moved to another plantation with her husband. Another example is the story of William Winter. Winter was indeed murdered on the front porch by an unknown assailant but after being shot, he immediately fell down and died. On January 26, 1871, while going over a Sunday School lesson with his young son in the men's parlor, Winter heard a man ride up on horseback and call out to him. It seemed the man was wanting to talk with the attorney over some matter. When Winter went out to see who this was, he was shot. The people inside the house rushed out to find him dead on the gallery. This was reported in the Point Coupee Newspaper. His bloody trip through the house never took place --- information that was easily found in historical records. (This, by the way, is the only verifiable murder to take place in the house.)

If Ms. Kermeen could have written so much erroneous information about a house that she actually lived in for so many years, how much more could she have gotten wrong about the other locations in this book?

Other information in the book is incorrect, also. Another reviewer says "There are some historical errors in this book that I hope will be corrected if there are any further printings. The author has a real problem with dates, especially those pertaining to the Civil War and these errors are grievous enough to cost the book a star. Having visited these places she writes about, her facts should have been more accurate."

I bought this book about the same time that I got her other book. After finding so many colossal inaccuracies in both books, I can't trust either one.

1 out of 5 stars NOT TRUE.......2006-06-07

The information is inaccurate according to historical records. Many readers may be familiar with the story of The Myrtles. It's a classic ghost story and one that has been featured in books, in magazines and on television literally dozens of times. The problem is that not a word of it is true! The Myrtles, according to hundreds of people who have encountered the unexplained here, is haunted -- but not for the reasons that we have all been told. I would suggest reading "A Ghost Hunter's Guidebook" (Third Edition) by Troy Taylor and "So There I Was... More Confessions of Ghost Hunters" by Troy Taylor and Len Adams for more information on The Myrtles. You can also do a search on the internet for "The Legends, Lore and Lies of The Myrtles Plantation" for starters. Or, if you're ever in St. Francisville, you can go to the courthouse and the historical society and check through the records yourself. For instance, Sarah Mathilda and two of her children were not murdered. She died from yellow fever (according to historical record) in 1823. Her children, a son and a daughter - not both daughters, died about a year after she did in 1824 (both from yellow fever). As has been said more than once - "when the legend is better than the truth, print the legend". This is an adage that has been closely followed by the Myrtles, misleading hundreds of ghost hunters and enthusiasts over the years. Having lived in this house for many years, Ms. Kermeen's facts should have been more accurate. I do not discount the paranormal activity at The Myrtles - just the legends that surround them.

This quote is from a booklet about The Myrtles:
"James and Frances Kermeen Meyers passed through St. Francisville in the 1980s on a riverboat cruise and while visiting purchased the Myrtles. The Meyers ownership coincided neatly with the then-current fad of "Murder Mystery Weekends" in which local historians and surviving family members say that history was rewritten in a manner they consider "disgraceful"."

If you're interested in true ghost stories, read books by Troy Taylor. He's written quite a few....or "Mysterious America: The Revised Edition" by Loren Coleman.

3 out of 5 stars Vacation Planning Guide.......2006-03-09

A sort of vacation guide for people who are tired of long walks on the beach, don't really care for spas, and whose interest in history goes beyond what was built when. The properties featured offer no 'ghostly' guarantees, but give you just basic facts as known by the owners or through research and personal accounts. More importantly, they are places the public can access for a meal, a night, or just a quick peek. You can pack lightly; all you need is an open mind and a sense of timing.

Book Description

This is perhaps Collins' last lucid effort before ill health and opium drained his powers. A tale of ghostly terror, relentless pace, tight narrative, and a doomed Countess characterize and distinguish this powerful Collins novelette.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Subtitled: A Mystery of Modern Venice - 1860 vintage.......2004-09-25

Reading a novel by Wilkie Collins requires substantial time, but my investment is usually well rewarded. His lesser known novel, The Haunted Hotel, is uncharacteristically short, and is an easy way to become acquainted with Wilkie Collins. The Haunted Hotel offers a fast moving, tight plot that maintains the reader's interest. It is a mystery story, a ghost story, and an early psychological thriller, all melded smoothly together.

The story begins in London, but later moves to the modern Venice of 1860. The dark, wet waterways and aging palaces provide an ideal setting for a mysterious death and a possibly related disappearance. Suspicion there is, but evidence is sparse. A threatening apparition indirectly hints at further clues.

The psychology component revolves around the Countess Narona, one of the most memorable characters created by Collins. The seemingly amoral Countess foresees, or believes she foresees, her eventual punishment and doom for previous evils. Her obsession leads her step by step toward the very retribution that she hopes to avoid.

The Haunted Hotel - A Mystery of Modern Venice was first published in 1879. I recommend buying the inexpensive Dover edition (ISBN 0486243338). Dover also reprints other books by Wilkie Collins, including The Moonstone, The Lady in White, The Dead Secret, Basil, No Name, and others. Through these works Wilkie Collins is credited with having popularized the classic detective mystery story.

4 out of 5 stars perhaps the best Collins's later works?.......2003-05-12

Wilkie Collins writing career spanned some 30 years (1850-1880). During the last ten years his writing skills declined due to poor health and opium addiction; some of his later novels are really bad (semi-theatrical melodramas). Surprisingly 'The Haunted Hotel', one of the last works by Wilkie Collins, is a rather nice, compact ghost story. Fans of Wilkie Collins will be pleased.

The story is about, um.., a haunted hotel. Several characters, mostly squabbling aristocrats, return to the Venetian home (now hotel) of a deceased colleague (..a rather nasty fellow). The past comes to haunt these guests in rather metaphysical ways. It's all a bit silly, of course. But the decent prose and characterizations save 'The Haunted Hotel' from being some camp ghost story.

Bottom line: certainly not a classic but enjoyable nonetheless.

4 out of 5 stars ..........2002-04-17

...This little volume contains enough suspense, fog, and familial twists-and-turns to satisfy any modern mystery fan (if one overlooks the inherent sexism that dates this book)...not to mention the delicious sense of voyeurism in peeking in on this group of gentle Englishfolk. Read it and remember when mystery writers could actually write.

5 out of 5 stars True Collins Style........2000-07-26

If you are a Wilkie Collins fan, well then, add this title to your list. I have. A story filled with suspenses and mystery. It keeps you turning the pages until the end. Who killed the count or did anyone? What happened to the courier? Is the countess mad? Told partly by letters and differing characters' perspective it is typical of Collins' narrative style. He takes the readers to a most stupendous climax in Venice. It is a ghost story, a fun read, like watching an old black and white movie. Recommeded!

4 out of 5 stars Near unique blend of detective story and ghost story.......1999-02-04

The book's real strength lies in the character of the villainess/ victim Countess. As in Armadale, Collins creates a female character capable of enormous evil, and at the same time so riddled with guilt, and so seemingly trapped by her destiny, that we feel a horrified sympathy for her from the off.

None of the rest of the book's characters really come up to the same level, but the plotting as always is excellent, and the variation on the 'substitution' device in 'Woman' marks another first in crime fiction, which has been ripped off ad infinitum. The ending is truly chilling; if the hero(s) and heroine had had a bit more blood in them, this would rank with the very best.

Book Description

Some 39 inns from all around New England are profiled in this pleasantly disturbing little book. All of them have been visited by the author, all of them have passed his test as among the most stately and elegant in the Northeast... and, oh yes, all of them are haunted!

These are tales sworn to be true by the innkeepers and guests who have reported them. If you visit one, you may not see a ghost... but you may sense a presence... and you will enjoy a stay at a lovely establishment, with something extra: the chance you may meet someone who checked out long ago. Haunted Inns of New England is both a thrilling read and an invaluable guide, although it is not recommended for the faint of heart.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ghostly tales for a dark and stormy night.......2007-01-16

If you enjoy New England history and like a good bone-chilling fright in the dark, you will enjoy this book. Mark invites you along on his journey of open-minded discovery, and his detailed descriptions of the locations will make you feel as though you are walking through the front door along with him.

The stories highlight the history and hauntings of many New England Inns, most not widely known and off the beaten path (although the well-worn Lizzie Borden surfaces yet again; perhaps interesting to those not from New England). The first-hand interviews are with contemporary people at real locations, and in almost all cases the Inn's name, town, and telephone number are included. Many photographs are included as well.

Although the book does suffer from some poor sentence structure, punctuation, etc., if you are not reading from the standpoint of an English professor, you will find this an easy, delightful read. Mark's prose is a bit sugary, but to his credit the stories are told totally without embellishment, allowing the readers to judge the validity of the stories for themselves.

Be sure to read this one on a dark, stormy night, curled up in front of a roaring fire!

2 out of 5 stars Interesting topic, not great prose........2004-08-24

Being from a town in New England with a large number of the featured haunted inns, I was excited to read this book. I was even married at one and my grandmother worked at another in the 1930s. I did learn a few things about the history of the inns, which was great. Unfortunately, the writing was... off. I laughed out loud at several bits (one innkeeper had a "never-ending seven year dispute" with a zoning board) and cringed at others, especially the parts that seemed to kowtow to every inns' staff. It read like a school project rather than an actual professional finished glossy product. The book really could have done with an editing overhaul to make the stories more easily appreciated.

1 out of 5 stars Not Worth the Read.......2006-02-23

I purchased this book to get myself in the 'mood' for a trip to Savannah, Georgia. I found the stories unengaging, the attention to detail poor (Interstate 80 is not in Georgia), and the writing style did nothing to make the mainly second-hand narratives exciting or interesting. It was all I could do to make it through the Savannah portion. The stories are bland and the retelling is even more bland. This book's ghost stories make 'America's Most Haunted City' Savannah sound like your average city. If you're looking for good ghost stories, this is not your book.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book!!.......2002-12-13

I recommend this book for anyone who lives in Georgia.
I live in Bowdon, Georgia where the haunted Inn is in the
book. I know the woman who lives in the Inn. She told
me one time that she had a guest in the house and they
were talking in the hallway , and that a door slamed shut
right in front of the guest. The guest left vowing never
      to come back.

Nancy Roberts is a brilliant author, a great story teller I enjoyed this book, I gave it to my mother to read. NANCY gives you the history behind the story.

5 out of 5 stars Looking for spine tingling thrills.......1999-11-23

The stories Ms. Roberts shares are well-written and chilling. Georgia residents, in great detail, give eye-witness accounts of their experiences. Ms. Roberts writes these eye-witness accounts without being biased that spirits remain behind or not. A great travel guide to visit the historical south.

5 out of 5 stars Historical folklore at its very best!.......1999-01-05

I have been reading Nancy Roberts books for many years and they keep on getting better and better. She is extremely knowledgable about her subject and the photography done by her husband, Bruce, is always an excellent accompaniment to her writing. Nancy Roberts is a fellow Charlottean that I am extremely proud of. Anyone who enjoys folklore, storytelling, or just a good ghost story will love this book and her others as well.

I really loved this book. I travel AZ all the time and want to know where to stay for the most "bang for my buck" (ghost-wise). This was really helpful and the stories are told in a great local folklore kind of storytelling. Brought the old west to life.

2 out of 5 stars Good Locations, Bad Information.......2005-03-16

This book is good for finding locations in AZ that are visit able. Perfect if you're a novice ghost hunter or just someone who likes to go check out haunted locations without wanting too much history behind the hauntings.

The stories are jumpy. Not really giving the full history behind the hauntings. They talk about what their team witnessed, which is again all over the place. Also mixed in are stories from other witnesses. The stories don't really flow well and the information is hearsay at best.

I would suggest using the book to find the locations (if you don't already know them yourself), then doing your own investigation.

      Book Description

B`..melodrama is perennial and the craving for it is perennial and must be satisfied' T. S. Eliot ('Wilkie Collins and Dickens') Collins's ability to construct a gripping situation and to create an atmosphere of mystery and menace is fully evident in the three novellas reprinted here. All proceed through a series of dramatic scenes to a climax that in one case at least is literally explosive. The fast-paced Miss or Mrs? (1871) opens on a yacht, features a remarkably unconventional heroine, and entails murder attempts, blackmail, clandestine marriage and commercial fraud. Dramatic and psychologically absorbing, the action of The Haunted Hotel (1878) takes place in an ancient Venetian palazzo converted into a modern hotel that houses a grisly secreI. Lastly, set in a beautiful water-mill, The Guilty River (1886) depicts a group of alienated characters, whose relationships threaten to erupt in violence and murder. Varied in setting and tone, these stories demonstrate Collins's plot-making skill at its most succinct and intricate. *Introduction * Textual Note * Bibliography * Chronology * * Explanatory Notes *Appendix: Collins's prefaces

5 out of 5 stars Victorian sensationalism at its best.......2004-08-03

I suppose I should look embarrassed to be reviewing Victorian sensationalist novels, but. . .I'm not. I love them and I'm not ashamed to admit. I enjoy nearly every British Victorian author I can find--with the notable exception of Dickens (*gag*) and Emily Bronte (who was NOT the best Bronte writer by a long-shot)--and Collins is one of my true favorites. From the supernatural to the just plain mean, from true love to deadly love, from. . .well, from any hackneyed plot device to any other hackneyed plot device, you can find it in Collins, and well written, too! (Of course, one must remember that many of the trite plot devices were not so well-used when he penned them.)

These three novellas give an excellent example of the varied nature of his stories. Miss or Mrs? is a story of true love, unrequited love, greed, dark deeds, and clandestine marriage featuring one of the most insipid heroines I've seen yet. And still I enjoyed it.

The Haunted Hotel is a truly estimable work of fiction. In it Collins combines the supernatural with a truly interesting mystery and a rather sweet love story subplot. He pits human goodness against human evil with a heroine that is almost as strong and brave as she is good. One must remember the times, though, and not expect her to NOT faint away from time to time. This was my second reading of this novella and I liked it even better this time. It's truly complex and twisty and quite enjoyable.

With The Guilty River, Collins leaves the supernatural dangers and shows his readers what can happen to someone suddenly and cripplingly handicapped. . . If that someone is willing to give in to his immoral side, that is. Like the other three, love is a prominent theme, featuring another dangerous triangle of lovers.

The Haunted Hotel is by far the best of the three, but the others are still enjoyable enough to those who like Victorian literature. If one is reading them and expecting them to be comparable with modern books--DON'T. Collins, as with all Victorian writers, must be read in the spirit it was written to be fully enjoyed.
