Edgar Allan Poe is one of my favorite authors of all time. I recall reading the 'Tell Tale Heart' as an 8 year old and getting hooked. I read most any work of his that I could get my hands on, in the process inspiring in me a love of literature and mystery. I loved his works so much, many years later I coupled my biology major with an english minor just so I could have an excuse for reading during the busy college days. This work compiles the literary works of an absolute genius into a beautiful, must have volume. It would be a perfect gift for anyone who enjoys Poe and even for the child who shows growing signs of getting into video gaming...maybe catch the kid before its too late!

What can I really say here? A book of this magnitude is hard to really review because there is so much to comment on it's almost better to comment on nothing but the emotional pull of the work in general. So, with that thought in mind I'll do that very thing. Edgar Allan Poe is one of the darkest writers known to man, but on the upswing he may very well be one of the most influential and overall the most insightful. Reading any of the selected work in this collection (ranging from masterful short stories to some of the most brilliantly crafted poems written) will open a door to another world, a world that lives in each and every one of us, a dark world that we shun for fear of understanding. Poe brilliantly connects us to that world.

Poe is often referred to for his horror, stories like `The Tell Tale Heart' or `The Black Cat' set a precedent for what we've come to expect from his work, but it's not limited and that's where the pure joy in unexpected gems lies in waiting. Poems like the beautifully written `Annabelle Lee', a tragic story of love and loss, showcase a side to Poe, that while still maintaining a dark edge comes off softer and more heartfelt. It's almost so beautiful its anti-Poe.

Like I've mentioned, there is so much here it's hard to narrow down the must reads. There are just so many here. Every poem and story are classic in their own way and deserve our attention. As some have already commented on, this is not a collection to breeze through or take in all at once. It's too abrasive and may come across drastic and or blunt. It's better to take it piece by piece and really allow the brilliance that was this tortured soul shine through with each passage.

Edgar Allan Poe still today proves to be an inspiration for many recent writers, and his influence can be seen in many of the most praised, hailed and cherished a manuscript, but the truth remains that there is only one Edgar Allan Poe, and while writers of today have their own unique twists and assets, an imitation of the predecessor at times is nothing more than an imitation. Poe was the real thing, a genius of the written word and it's tragic that he left before his time was through, but he stays with us through collections like this that capitalize on everything that was great and awe-inspiring about a man who lived darker than the rest of us, not because he was that much more removed from the rest of us but because he knew how to embrace the very darkness that lies in us all.

As titled, this tome contains all of the stories, not just the short stories or a meager selection thereof, but ALL of the stories, including the long Pym and manuscript found in a bottle. This book also holds the poems, complete. It does not contain his literary and personal criticism, such as one dedicated to the Rev. George Bush, and it thankfully does not contain analysis of his work, and especially not by the dismal Harold Bloom. There is much good critical study of Mr. Poe, our source of American literature, postmodern literature, Conan Doyle and Lovecroft etc., etc., but that may be acquired separately. Here we gratefully receive his complete works at a great price.

In fact I purchased this copy lacking the will to dig mine out and eager to read once more The Man of the Crowd, a very modern writing devoid of plot, etc., and rather a James Joyce Ulysses in miniature as an urban epic journey within one day's span. Incredibly and stunningly well written.

Poe clearly was not the mad drunk we are taught he was, but a great artist, though starving, and the father of modern literature. He reads as invigoratingly and refreshingly and as excitingly both stylisticly and to content as ever. Do yourself a great favor this summer, and your family, and turn off the technology and read this with them, piece by piece. DO not forget to read the voyage in the balloon, not the hoax but the other whose title now escapes me, a vision of the future which reads as well now as ever. Do not go to the usual creaky Poe stories, as good as they are, such as House of Usher and Telltale Heart and Gold Bug, but dare to explore the entire opus of Poe, here generously and comprehensively provided. Let Mr. Poe, the master, teach you to write. Try it and you will find the genius and the fountainhead and the artist that he truly is.

Read this to your family with the lights down and the television off. The family who reads this together stays together, as the young ones will remain close to you and begging for more.

The William Shakespeare of horror.......2007-04-30

It's a finding of modern psychology that depressed people are most in touch with reality.

Perhaps this finding is what is meant when they say that great suffering produces great art.

Or rather perhaps: Great suffering can produce great art in the hands of the right genuis.

Treated with disdain by his adopted father, unable to properly care for his sick wife and dead by two score years in the bottle, Edgar Allen Poe experienced great suffering. He was also the right genuis.

His short, pithy poems and stories cull the raw material of your deepest fears to give them life.

It is interesting that outside of his work as a writer and putative editor, Poe was also an early skeptic and debunker. He correctly understood that the reason the night sky was not awash in light was because insufficient time had passed for the distant stars light to reach us. He also single handedly debunked a fake chess automaton by showing that it was in fact run by a person concealed in a hidden box.

His writing aside, perhaps the ulitimate unsettling thing about Poe is that -- given his prescient understanding of humanity and the world in which it lived -- that he chose and ultimately died from substance abuse in a vain effort to shield himself from that understanding.

Edgar Allan Poe's works.......2004-06-17

I think that Edgar Allan Poe is a really great Author. He completely mastered the style that he wanted to achieve. His style is somewhat of a creepy, cold feeling one. A coldness that grasps you while you read it. While you read his stories, you really can feel the creepy sense in each one. It's a great style of writing, that doesn't always appeal to everyone, but it's still a great style to accomplish, and he did it very, very well. I enjoyed reading most of his works, because they have a vocabulary on them like you wouldn't believe. I had to look up a few words that he used, but it was still nice to read. Anyways, have fun reading his books, and let them live on. :-D

Balance in the human nature.......2003-01-03

Lately I have been interested in the psychological state of socio-paths. In undertaking this study I was recommended "Crime and Punishment" by Fyodor and "Tell Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe. I would not agree with my friends thinking that Edgar Allan Poe's writing entail a socio-pathic behavior; as quite contrary the aggressor is faced with immense guilt and contemplating the actions taken; in the end confessing to the crime.

In this collection of very short stories which manifest them in tales of dark horror; Allan I believe is suggesting that human nature is a delicate balance of light and dark or good and evil. Most of the time this precarious balance is maintained; however, when there is a shift, for whatever reason, the dark or perverse side surfaces. How and why this "dark side" emerges differs from person to person.

The Tell-Tale Heart.......2002-01-10

Ive read this book in one of my classes at school. I would suggest it to anyone that has a wider vocabulary. Basically its about a man, the narrator, who has an obsession with another man's eye. The eye resembles that of a vulture's or in simpler terms it has a glazed look to it. The eye drives the narrator crazy. After many nights of waiting he finally gets the chance to kill him. He hides the body underneath the floorboards in the house. When the police investigate the narrator believes that he can hear the beating of the heart underneath the floor. He is sure the police can hear it to. It ocercomes him, and since he is so sure that they hear it, he confesses. When in all reality, it is his own guilt which leads him to confess... But thats a reader's digest version. :)

This book of short stories and poems by Edgar Allan poe is very confusing. I would only suggest this book to an adult of teenager with an extremely wide vocabulary. I'm in middle school and I didn't really undrestand some of the stories. If you are into bazzar and weird things then this is the book for you. don't get me wrong Edgar Allan Poe is an awsome writer but the book is a little confusing. Be sure to make the right choice on this book.

I've always had a liking for Edgar Allan Poe, with his tales of horror, mystery and suspense, done in the atmospheric prose of a master writer. Since I live close enough, I've even made some trips to his gravesite, a place that is always surrounded by a sense of sadness.

Poe was a tormented genius who died young, under mysterious circumstances, and at the time of his death he wasn't deservingly popular. Certainly his work was not cute romances for the masses -- he explored the darkness of the human heart, love, satire, and the earliest whodunnit stories. And "Complete Stories and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe" brings together all of his poetry and writings in one book.

Poe's fiction writings include short stories and novellas, which tend to be rather weird -- a treasure-hunt and a golden insect, a ship caught in a whirlpool, a hypnotized man talks about the universe, and stories of despair, madness, and occasionally beauty. There is also his trilogy of Monsieur C. Auguste Dupin stories, which were the first to feature a brilliant detective solving an impossible crime.

Most people know about "The Raven" (which even has the Baltimore Ravens named after it) but Poe actually wrote a lot of poetry, most of which readers never heard of. Sometimes dark, or whimsical, or even both. "By a route obscure and lonely/Haunted by ill angels only/Where an Eidolon, named NIGHT/On a black throne reigns upright..."

And, of course, the horror. This is what Poe is best known for, including such well-known stories as "The Fall Of The House Of Usher." But there are also lesser-known gems -- tales of a plague invading a party, being buried alive, a portrait that siphoned the life out of its subject, and a nightly visit to an Italian crypt leading to madness.

Don't read "Complete Stories and Poems" all at once. It's too intense. It's better to soak it in a little at a time, so that you can get a better feel for the different kinds of writing that Poe did, and how he excelled at pretty much everything he put down on paper. Most great writers can't boast of that much.

Poe's writing is what makes even his least story or poem come alive -- he brought a gothic, misty vibrancy to his stories, and could make his quiet dialogue seem utterly chilling (" "I have no name in the regions which I inhabit. I was mortal, but am fiend..."). It's not hard to see why he was an influence on authors such as Fyodor Dostoevsky, Oscar Wilde, Arthur Conan Doyle and Franz Kafka.

We all know the brilliance of Edgar Allan Poe. A dark genius- no surprise. The thing that might get those not familiar with his work is the short stories- they are absolutely top notch! There is not a page in this book I dislike.

From what I've seen this is the most reliable compilation available. If you are looking for a big book to tote around to various cafe's (as I enjoy doing), this is a good choice. :P

There's no point whatsoever in reviewing the work of Poe. As you know, or soon will know, it is the work of genius & above reproach, particularly from a mere mortal Amazon reviewer like myself.

So instead I am reviewing this collection of his works specifically. Safe to say there a hundreds of books out there containing his work, many of which are misleadingly titled 'the complete...' or 'the definitive...'. Nonsense. None of these books have been anywhere near complete. On top of that, few, if any, are attractively presented or pieced together with some logical thought process evident.

This thick, hefty (but not large-sized) 1984 Library of America edition tips the scales at over 1500 pages(!) and has all of his mesmerising short stories, all of his fascinating poems, and his other sought after works which other reviewers here detail more closely. Better yet, for once they are in chronological order, which gives the reader the opportunity to follow Poe's own development.

Yes, it is expensive, but this is an absolute essential for your library, and assuming you bring up your children to love reading, will be in your family for many generations. This is not an expensive book, this is an investment for you and your family that will give you decades of pleasure (150 years after his death and we're still reading Poe!)

THIS my friends, is the absolute and comprehensive collection of the works of Poe, contained within a beautiful and fittingly gothic-styled hardback. Don't sell yourself short and look for a cheaper & inferior book, snap up one of the remaining copys of this book, it will outlive you...

The Ultimate Edition for Poe.......2006-07-03

The books of the Library of America are among the very best and most beautiful editions I know of. The paper is acid-free material, it won't yellow and get all brittley any time soon, and you can lay that book open on a table and it won't close itself. It is a great object and I won't even discuss Poe's work here, though tons could be said, of course.

This is a hardcover book with a neat dusjacket; it also has one of these thin ribbons to mark your page. It's pure awesomeness I tell you! Anyone who enjoys Poe would do well to get this edition, it's the best out there and it contains all of Poe's fiction, including some never-published-before material.

For the SERIOUS Poe lover........2004-09-29

If you want the real Poe, the Library of America version of Poe's Poetry and Tales is the best bargain going. This volume should give either a lover of Poe or a serious scholar a handy volume of the Poe canon. I am not going to extol the virtues of Edgar Allan Poe. He was one of our most important national authors and an innovator of forms and genres. Master of the macabre, inventor of the detective story, explicator of the psychotic soul-Poe was the father of psychological horror literature as well as an accomplished satirist, critic and poet. If you want all of the poems and tales all in one place, go buy this book. Apparently the two volume Borzoi Poe (Knopf) edited by Arthur Hobson Quinn and Edward H. O'Neill is out of print. That was certainly a respectable edition of the poems and stories, and it included, the marvelous metaphysical Eureka as well as all the tales and poems and a respectable cross-section of the criticism in a handsome two-volume edition. The Modern Library and Doubleday complete Poe's are good enough to read for pleasure. But if you want a version of Poe that can be used as a reading text as well as a scholarly resource (meaning serious stuff) then this Library of America volume is just the thing for you. It is edited by Patrick Quinn, a highly respected Poe scholar, and its texts are good-and you get all of them. It's certainly a bargain when compared to the Thomas Ollive Mabbott/Burton Pollin variorum edition, a multi-volume extravaganza. And most of us don't need all that detail anyway. This is a nice volume because it encapsulates the canon of the fiction and poetry-clean and compact. Here you get all the poems and tales (short stories) as well as The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym, the timely Poe version of Lewis and Clark called The Journal of Julius Rodman, the cosmological extravaganza/ metaphysical tour de force that Poe called Eureka. This is all of Poe that you might want to read. And the texts are all derived from the real authoritative readers' texts defined by the best Poe scholars. There is a second volume in the series that contains criticism that brings it all back home.

Great, Easy to understand.......2004-03-03

I love Edgar Allan Poe, but i found that most of his stories and poems are harder to understand because of the time period. So i bought this book hoping to get the full message...And i did its got slightly bigger print, Vocabulary at the bottom like a school book...In fact this was the version we used in our high school and it was great. It has a nice front cover a crows shadow and a haunted house in a storm its really neat... Poe being a gothic writer makes his writing more dark. He writes about the death and maddness. Edgar Allen Poe.......2004-02-26

Edgar Allen Poe is one of the most memorable and respected writers of our time. He is not well known for his big, long and thick books, but rather for his short, interersting and mysterious stories. Poe goes down as one of the best writers because he understands people and he can also communicate with his reader. Versatitlity is a sign of a good writer and Edgar Allen Poe is a perfect example of this. Three of his stories "The Pit and the Pendulum", "The Gold Bug" and "The Stolen Letter" are very well written and logical stories, but unless Poe's name was on the front page of the story, you wouldn't be able to tell that the stories were written by the same author.

In "The Pit and the Pendulum", Poe brings out depression and gives the reader a feel of being locked up like the charater in his story. He also makes you feel like you (the reader) is also facing the possibility of death and its your job to break free from the ropes so you won't be killed by a razor sharp, decending pendulum. In "The Stolen Letter" Edgar ALlen Poe switches his dark demented side, to a more light and curious theme. It is said that Poe is one of the first people to ever write a mystery. In this he has a detective and his buddy that try to find out about a mysterious letter that a high ranking government official has stolen from the princess. Through a series of events the mystery unravels and is solved. "The Gold Bug" is probably one of the best short stories that I have ever read. This story has a little bit of everything in it, from mystery to adventure, to even a quick history lesson. Edgar ALlen Poe delivers every time with his use of words and expressions.

In an age defined by its thist for material glamour and financial success, "Edgar Allan Poe: Poetry, Tales, and Selected Essays" is a refreshing reclamation of class and importance. Indeed, one rarely finds a volume more indicative of artistic essence, or more faithful to the memory of great literary genius than this unassuming compendium. Moreover, "Poetry, Tales, and Selected Essays" demonstrates a peerless selection of Poe's greatest work. The seasoned Poe-reader will find cause, after sufficient perusal, to conclude that few works are able to illustrate Poe in so honest a light. Perhaps most admirable is the pursuit of fusion between Poe's fiction and nonfiction. Where many publications approach the mixture in unbecoming fashion, "Poetry, Tales, and Selected Essays" achieves an equilibrium wherein the literature may be viewed as a consequence of the principles discussed in each literary essay. In this way, the essays dovetail with the fiction beautifully, and the reader comes away blessed with a more catholic concept of Poe's genius. This effort at capturing Poe's essence is both commendable and enjoyable. Truly, it is an indispensable purchase for the avid Poe-reader.

'Horror,' as it is broadly understood, is defined by two essential elements: the active presence of decay, some 'abnormal' manifestation of nature, or a combination of both.

One hundred and fifty-seven years after his early death, Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), who made horror the dominant theme of his creative work, remains the American master of the weird tale. Poe's work has had enormous worldwide influence: French poet Charles Baudelaire was an early champion and translator, Poe's 'William Wilson' (1839) haunts the pages of Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890), and several stories look presciently ahead to work of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung.

The Collected Tales and Poems of Edgar Allen Poe (1992), which also includes humorous pieces ('The Devil in the Belfry' is a hilarious tribute to the father of American literature, Washington Irving), detective fiction (Irving's 1838 story-cycle 'The Money-Diggers' stirs fluidly beneath 'The Gold Bug'), and early examples of what would come to be known as science fiction, brings together most of the author's important work.

Two general narrator (or protagonist/character) types emerge. The first is meticulously rational, calm, and 'objective'--like Dupin, the amateur sleuth who coolly solves the mystery of 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue.' The second, best represented by Roderick Usher in 'The Fall of the House of Usher,' is psychically haunted, deeply subjective, acutely sensitive in every pore, and barely able to repress the hysteria--at best--simmering just beneath the surface of his consciousness.

Both general types are isolated and obsessive in their own way--the first perhaps imagines he has found salvation by holding the world at a kind of hard cerebral remove, while the second surrenders his will in increments and sinks obliquely into emotional, spiritual, psychic, and physical fragmentation. The second type (found in 'The Fall of the House of Usher,' 'Berenice,' 'The Black Cat,' 'The Pit and the Pendulum,' and 'William Wilson,' among others) dominates and defines Poe's work.

Poe occasionally offers readers a combination of both types, as in 'The Imp of the Perverse,' in which the narrator, after a lengthy, meditative, and 'objective' discourse on the self-destructive aspects of human nature, briefly tells his own story: compelled to commit a pointless murder, he then finds himself equally compelled to publicly confess it.

Fatalism and perdition are key characteristics of the author's work: death may await everyone, but, in Poe, death impatiently reaches forward into men's lives, sickening, exhausting, and corrupting them, thus hastening fragile humanity's end. Poe's protagonists are once healthy, now dire, everymen surrounded on every side by hostile, malevolent, and destructive forces which dominate every plateau, division, and category of existence that man has methodically--and rather naively--mapped out. Human instinct proves to be 'red in tooth and claw'; the senses betray; the mind collapses; the borders and boundaries of civilization are violently breached; the natural world reveals a harsh, predatory, and incomprehensible face; physical laws prove unreliable; loving relationships sicken and fester; all agents of stability prove false and slip away.

Most of Poe's work suggests that there is no escape for anyone (--"dead to the World, to Heaven, and to Hope!"), and, as several of the tales underscore, including 'The Fall of the House of Usher' and 'Ms. Found in a Bottle,' even the cessation of life may bring no solace for some. However, reprieves are possible: the narrator barbarically tortured by the Spanish Inquisition is freed by the arriving French army at the conclusion of 'The Pit and the Pendulum,' the sailor who experiences 'A Descent Into the Maelstrom' survives to tell of his ordeal, and the vengeful dwarves in 'Hop Frog' apparently escape at that story's conclusion.

Remarkably, because of the skill with which he illustrates his view of man's utter lack of genuine choice or ability for self-determination, Poe manages to make most of his characters likeably human, despite their illnesses, eccentricities, and perversions. Though the tales team with toxic bloodlines, incestuous relationships, premature burials, rioting lunatics, marauding plagues, 'tormenting' doppelgangers, parasitic spirits of the dead, animated corpses, "ghoul-haunted woodlands," and a fair variety of additional supernatural tableaus, Poe remains is a remarkably rational, balanced, and economic storyteller, since the ultimate horror lies not in the external threat, but in the narrator's realization that what he is experiencing is the genuine nature of life itself.

Poe's tales suggest that, if all of mankind lives within a perpetually collapsing, cannibalizing universe, the most one can hope for is that, in the present, it is collapsing on someone else.

Fantastic Poe!.......2002-08-27

Poe is one of the best horror writers ever to have lived. I have read all of his works. Some of his best stories are The Fall of the House of Usher, The Masque of Red Death, The Black Cat, The Cask of Amontaiado, The Pit and the Pendelum, and The Tell-Tale Heart. His great poems include-The Raven and The Bells. Poe is a fantastic author, and his creepy tales of the dark side of life should be read over and over.

Tales from the Master.......2000-06-19

Poe is one of the world's finest writers and this collection of stories is what he's all about. This book contains the best of his tales, with many others for you to explore on your own. It has his poems and short stores. Its contents is very close to being unabridged except, for it missing a few poems and stories that aren't very good anyway.

Poe's tales contain all the excitement of a novel, in around 10 pages. I recommend this collection because it offers hours of enjoyment. The only thing you might need is a large vocabulary because he tends to have an advanced word choice. Get this book and have fun!

I am ordering it because I saw it in a local bookstore and it was much more than it is here. I really like The Raven and a Tell-Tale Heart so I figured I better order it. I really like the Raven. I liked it so much that I memorized it for a school project! It was hard but I did it! As a matter of fact, I still remember some of it!
