Book Description

Designed to be a true alternative to traditional argument texts, Everything's an Argument takes a fresh and friendly approach to the subject by showing students that argument is everywhere. Everything's an Argument with Readings complements this approach with a uniquely broad range of examples -- from essays to billboards to emails to radio programs -- that help students recognize and respond to the arguments all around them. Andrea Lunsford and John Ruszkiewicz's instruction is fresh, elegant, and jargon-free, emphasizing inclusivity (moving beyond simple pro/con positions), humor, and visual argument to make Everything's an Argument immediately accessible. Students like this book because it helps them see and understand that a world of argument already surrounds them; instructors like it because it helps students construct their own arguments about that world.

4 out of 5 stars Essential for Argument Presentation.......2007-03-02

Presented in textbook fashion, WRITING ARGUMENTS: A RHETORIC WITH READINGS, doesn't exactly make for compelling reading, but is certainly a critical source for argumentation documents. Author's Ramage, Bean and Johnson guide the reader through the process both deliberately and succinctly, covering every aspect of argument presentation, beginning with definition through source documentation.

Mine is an older edition and the technology aspect is dated, but nonetheless, I turn often to this book to guide me through argument preparation. Though certainly intended for classroom study, this book is also useful outside the classroom. I have prepared a fair number of arguments for political presentation and have found this to be a useful volume.

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, articulate, and readable rhetoric. .......2004-11-18

"Writing Arguments" shines like a beacon in the dark and murky waters of composition textbooks. Although some have critiqued it for its "passive" approach, I support both the approach and the layout as the best way I've found to approach basic argumentation. A solid understanding of audience (in particular) is vital for successful writing, and it's also something inexperienced, self-focused writers often lack.

Rather than pushing a "win at all costs" or "go with your gut" victory-based approach to rhetoric, the authors promote rhetorical writing grounded in Perelman's audience concepts, Toulmin's warrants, and Aristotelian enthymeme. By encouraging students to locate common ground (warrants) between themselves and their real or imagined audience, this book sets them up to engage in rhetoric as participants in a broader civic culture. And this is the rhetoric that will ultimately equip them to survive in the real world--where knowing what a client or an opponent wants and believes is critical to "winning" the argument in a lasting and productive way.

No theory or approach is perfect (not that I've found so far at least), and a rigid application of the Toulmin model or the schema as outlined in this book will inevitably bog down writers as they move into more advanced composition. But that, afterall, is why we teachers are there. By focusing students' attention on the basic principles in the book--audience awareness, orderliness, situational groundedness, etc.--rather than forcing them to memorize rules or endlessly construct Toulmin models, I may just be able to help my students develop a new respect for argumentation as discovery (and themselves as rhetors) in the public sphere. And if we can do that, maybe there's a little civil light in the civic culture tunnel after all.

3 out of 5 stars Poor Design and Average Content.......2006-03-02

I am a big fan of Williams' other book "Style: Ten Lessons in Clarity and Grace." If you do not own "Style," buy it from Amazon.com now. It is that good. "The Craft of Argument" lacks the brilliance of "Style," yet you will learn a great deal from it nonetheless.

The book design is substandard. You will have difficulty keeping track of what heading level you are reading. The index is insufficiently detailed for those looking to pick out a section for single use. The book is in black and white, so the typography of the book is especially important. I am happy to report that, in contrast to the overall book design, the typography is excellent. The fonts are readable and large enough to accommodate speed reading techniques. I was pleased to find the index fonts as large as the book font.

The content is comprehensive and undeniably excellent...except for one major point under the heading 'Inappropriate rhetorical Appeals' on page 316: "So what if someone contradicts herself? Regardless of what the writer said before, we have to judge the issue before us on its own merits..." Here, the authors slip into sophistry.

They advance a theory of consistency within single arguments only, but this encourages, even justifies, a contradictory, ad hoc argument style. As Quine points out in "Two Dogmas of Empiricism" (another book you should buy immediately), we never test arguments in isolation, but instead we test whole theories. By inappropriately limiting the consistency to single arguments, the authors do real harm to reasoning in practical situations.

The book is good, but it could have been great. Get it. Despite its shortcomings, you will be a better writer after reading it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the very best on the subject.......2003-12-16

Logic, argumentation, and influence are three of my favorite study subjects. So it was with great interest that I picked up "The Craft of Argumentation with Readings". I expected a lot of the usual stuff, an almost mechanical approach to logic and influence. This is not at all what I received. This book is unique among this genre of books. The authors very clearly take the reader into the area of argumentation and influence as an art form.

All the expected education in argumentation is presented in the book. Reasoning, evidence, claims, forms of reasoning, meanings, causes, overt and covert force of language, fallacies, etc. are all covered. But all these things are in any competent book on argumentation. The problem is that most books also end there - a competent education in the mechanics of argumentation. This book not only develops those competencies but also closely examines issues such as developing the ethos, credibility, and other factors of argumentation. This is where this book pulls away from the pack and becomes one of the very few that teaches the art and craft of argumentation. You might see the difference by comparing it to the art of dance. Anyone can learn the movements required to perform a specific dance and may be able to execute it flawlessly, but it doesn't necessarily move the audience emotionally. Another trained dancer can go through the same steps and create a thing of beauty that moves the audience and causes them to feel they are a part of the dance. Likewise you can go through the mechanics of argumentation and develop a perfectly logical and compelling position that moves no one to accept it. Or you can create it as an art form that creates an emotional as well as a logical response in the recipient. This is not only a highly recommended book for anyone interested in the subject, it should be required reading for anyone serious about understanding argumentation and influence.

      Book Description

This popular rhetoric/reader combines a brief, accessible introduction to argument with an anthology of provocative readings on contemporary issues. By stressing the rhetorical situation and the audience, this rhetoric avoids complicated theories in favor of providing readers with the practical means to find “good reasons” for their positions. Supporting the authors' instruction are numerous readings by professional and student writers on contemporary issues. The anthology features over 80 selections on interesting current issues such as body image, immigration, affirmative action, and the environment. Distinctive in its emphasis on visual rhetoric, the text includes a thorough discussion of how good document design can support good reasons, as well as a unique introduction to presenting arguments on the Web.Individuals interested in learning how to construct persuasive arguments.

3 out of 5 stars For My Daughter.......2007-06-26

Honestly, I bought this for my daughter to use in a college course she needed it for.

      5 out of 5 stars Good........2004-08-20

This book will open up your eyes and make you think differently about many different issues concering out society today. You might also realize those issues are much more complicated than they seem on the surface.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent reference text for readings on contempory issue.......1998-11-29

The book is in two parts: the first lays down the elements of citical thinking and the art of dissecting an argument, and the second is an excellent selection of readings which offer both pro and con views on a wide variety of social and moral subjects.

I find myself continually referring to the second section of the book, because the readings selected are compelling, and very well written. They include modern writers, as well as the best writings of past authors who explore contemporary issues of their day. That they continue to be "hot" issues today speaks to the continuing struggle we have with certain kinds of issues.

After each pair of readings the authors have offered a series of questions for further thought, which can be used for independent analysis of the reading, or as part of a course in critical thinking. I found these questions very helpful in stimulating discussion with others, especially those with strong feelings in the subject areas.

This book has become a "must read" in my circle of critically thinking frinds.

2 out of 5 stars Depends on what you're looking for..........2007-01-16

I teach composition at a mid-sized Catholic university in the mid-Atlantic region and used this as my course text last semester (the department's choice, not mine) with decidedly mixed results. If you want your students to get beyond "mere rhetoric" and into critical analysis, this NOT the text you should be using. Most of the examples quoted are taken from newspaper editorials, which are notoriously one-sided and don't exactly encourage the reader to give the opposition's view a fair shot, and the last half is a handbook (useful if you don't want your students to have to purchase more than one book, but frustrating if you'd rather see those pages devoted to substantive material on teaching composition). If you like the argument/debate model of writing instruction (I don't), this will probably work out better for you than it did for me. I must also note that most of my students found the book's tone patronizing.

5 out of 5 stars Take it from a former student--this is a worthwhile book.......2001-07-26

Even if you're not a formal student of rhetoric and composition, this book is a useful tool. The ability to construct a persuasive, credible argument is invaluable in today's society. As a former student of Dr. William Palmer, I know his technique is highly effective. This book is the next best thing to the classroom!
