Wonderful Ideas.......2007-08-03
I love this book. I was very happy upon receiving this book. There are great many useful ideas for furniture arrangements, color coordination, etc. Very useful for people to use to assist with laying out a room, carrying through decorating ideas, that are simple but very beautiful.
A Must for the First Time Decorator.......2007-07-19
Ordered this book for a couple who purchased their first home. They LOVED it and were inspired to decorate (beyond the in-college look) realizing they didn't need to spend $$$ to set up a fantastic looking room.
A Great Catalogue for Gold and partner.......2007-07-17
I personally feel the book is a great catalogue for the furniture manufacturers who wrote the book. Some nice pictures but not of much value to me however, I am very choosy about my design books so others may feel quite differently.
Just like any other decoration book out there.......2007-06-27
I saw an excerpt of this book in a deco magazine I read. It was about the placement of the furniture in the living room, by creating layers of objects. Finally a sound, step-by-step advice with pictures, since I always had trouble implementing in real life all the pretty pictures I saw for years in the magazines I read.
Unfortunately, upon reading the book I discovered that this is the only step-by-step advice in it. All the rest are (again) pretty pictures, in the same contemporary design. I really should not have bought this. If you feel the same, I recomment Easy Decorating Makeovers by BHG.
A book for the decor-impaired.......2007-05-21
I have to tell you how much I like this book. First of all, I am very busy--single mom, working, blah blah. Definitely too busy to decorate and when I do have the time, I don't have a clue how to go about it. My rooms end up looking like a hodge-podge, and not in the cute, shabby-chic kind of way. I had actually called an honest-to-goodness licensed Interior Decorator out of desperation, even though I couldn't afford it.
And then I saw this book. And I canceled the appointment with the decorator lady.
Why should I pay her what I already paid these guys to do? They told me what I needed to know to make my rooms look better. More cohesive, more stylish, and more comfortable. Which is all I wanted.
The book is easy to read with lots of good pictures and common-sense advice for pulling rooms together. Best of all I could use a lot of what I already had.
Good book, great investment!

not the best reference for interior designers.......2007-08-17
I found a handful of pages out of this book useful for space planning. Not worth fifty bucks unless you are designing equipment and products.
Awesome reference.......2006-11-05
There's minimal reading in this book, which is nice since it's good for reference. The reading that it does have is very simple with bulleted paragraphs full of information that you can't get from looking at the diagrams.
Great diagrams for industrial design students (I got this for one of my classes), gives you the measurements, reach, sight and motion range, pretty much any numeric info you need to know for the 1 percentile, 99 percentile, and 50 percentile man/woman.
Also has nice chart of child development w/descriptions of what the ave. child can do at each age, as well as diagrams for the elderly (and in wheelchair). This book is essential if you are going for product design or interior design.
Good reference book.......2006-10-31
This was purchased to be a reference book for human sizes and I am very happy with it.
Interesting..........2006-02-13
This book arrived in good condition from the sender and before time. The book inself is very interesting and will serve its purpose.
HUMAN FACTORS.......2005-09-05
I AM A BIG FAN OF THE AUTHOR, AND HAVE USED HIS WORKS IN THE PRACTICE OF MY WORK MANY TIMES, THE BOOK, IS GOOD WITH MANY PRACTICAL EXAMPLES, BUT SADLY DOES NOT SEEM TO TELL ME ANYMORE THAN I ALREADY KNEW. ....I WAS HOPING FOR MORE.
THE BOOKLET NEEDS UPDATING.
SUPERB THOUGH AS A REFERENCE BOOK.

Pug At The Beach loves Jack Canfield.......2007-10-09
Far too many people wander through life unfulfilled because they lack the skill set needed to experience life to its most bountiful. That's in part due to a fear of asking for that which brings us what we need, want or desire.
People are afraid. Afraid of rejection, afraid of looking foolish, and a whole host of other things. Be afraid no longer. The Aladdin Factor will teach you how to ask without fear.
Canfield's book taught me how to ask in a powerful, confident way that would guarantee my success. Simple phrasing combined with subtle reflection made for a life transforming read.
At Pug Headquarters, it's a must read.

So good, I had to buy one for my sister before I was done with mine.......2007-05-30
I came upon this book by accident. I was walking by a store and found it in a box of bargains. I decided to buy it to help my step children heal and grow. Since I planned on having kids read it, I decided that I should read it first. Within the first 20 pages I finally learned that I deserved time to myself. I was raised in a very structured (dysfunctional) family. Everything was about doing for others and not wanting for yourself. I was not to ever have any time to relax and feel peace. If my mother found me doing something for me, then she would let me know that I should feel guilty for doing anything that was not for someone else's benefit. Anyways, I started this book, and for the first time in my entire life (I am 39 mind you.) I gave myself the permission to just do what I wanted to do and not have to do anything. I found that I can have a relaxing day and still mindfully care for my kids. Just because you have kids and I have five (ages 3 to 15), there is no reason that you have to feel burdened by the day and everything that you have to get done. You can give yourself the permission to burn a candle and enjoy the light. To read a book, while your children play outside.
I sent this book to my sister who is married to a man who is quite hard to live with. She has finally decided that she has the right to not be controlled by someone else which unfortunately means that she has to go through a divorce, but joyfully this opens her up for the chance to know real happiness. Since we were raised in the same dysfunational environment, I thought that she needs this book as soon as possible so I bought it for her before I was done. She read over half the book in a couple of days, and then it took her a little longer to read the section on fear. She has shared many parts of this book with her 11 yr. old daughter. I openly recommend this book for anyone who is willing to move beyond the pain, the sadness, the fear and learn to truly believe your own self worth.
Very Good Book - Strong Recommendation.......2006-12-26
This book should definitely be a part of your learning experience. It is excellent...Mike Stokes
Ask and it is given.......2006-12-23
It is amazing how Jack presents this subject and touches your heart. The things he mention about asking are really there for each one of us.
Jack explained the limiting factors inside each one of us that stop the whole process of asking.
By just reading this book, you will achieve many things you were putting on hold for years and years in some cases.
Buy this book now, and have a new life!!!
A MUST READ BOOK!
The Aladdin factor.......2005-08-18
A pretty good book. I expected a "how-to" book, but was pleasantly surprised. The book is mostly anecdotes but really helps you focus, and lets you apply the "lessons learned" yourself. A very enjoyable read.
Book Description
"The following description is for the second edition of About Face. The 3rd Edtion, About Face 3 (ISBN 0470084111), is now available."
First published seven years ago-just before the World Wide Web exploded into dominance in the software world-About Face rapidly became a bestseller. While the ideas and principles in the original book remain as relevant as ever, the examples in About Face 2.0 are updated to reflect the evolution of the Web.
Interaction Design professionals are constantly seeking to ensure that software and software-enabled products are developed with the end-user's goals in mind, that is, to make them more powerful and enjoyable for people who use them. About Face 2.0 ensures that these objectives are met with the utmost ease and efficiency.
Alan Cooper (Palo Alto, CA) has spent a decade making high-tech products easier to use and less expensive to build-a practice known as "Interaction Design." Cooper is now the leader in this growing field. Mr. Cooper is also the author of two bestselling books that are widely considered indispensable texts. About Face: The Essentials of User Interface Design, intro-duced the first comprehensive set of practical design principles. The Inmates Are Running the Asylum explains how talented people and companies continually create aggravating high-tech products that fail to meet customer expectations.
Robert Reimann has spent the past 15 years pushing the boundaries of digital products as a designer, writer, lecturer, and consultant. He has led dozens of interaction design projects in domains including e-commerce, portals, desktop productivity, authoring environments, medical and scientific instrumentation, wireless, and handheld devices for startups and Fortune 500 clients alike. Joining Cooper in 1996, Reimann led the development and refinement of many goal-directed design methods described in About Face 2.0. He has lectured on these methods at major universities and to international industry audiences. He is a member of the advisory board of the UC Berkeley Institute of Design.
Customer Reviews:
Alan Cooper is a genius.......2007-04-07
This book not only defines a "layman user" but also answers the question of how your application can educate a layman user step by step.
Designing of application.......2006-11-10
How to design a application from a designers perspective. Cannot say I agree with everything, but the writers are probably right.
Needs more examples!.......2006-05-16
I think this guy has a book about how the inmates are running the asylum...well this book suffers from what happens when the subject matter experts (SME) are allowed to write books. BORING!!! SME's always seem to forget to include compelling examples. Yes there are little screen shots, but IMO in order for a book to be compelling that has to do with design...it needs to show LOTS of examples of good design. The bulk of the book should be about breaking down those designs. I need to hear why a specific design is effective. Take a hint from Steve Krugs book "Don't Make me Think". That book is extremely effective without inundating the reader with jargon. Lots of examples with meaningful visual breakdowns. Afterall...isnt UI design a VISUAL communication form?
Not for experienced developers.......2006-03-05
I have 7 years experience and I wasn't able to get any value out of this book. Based on some of the reviews on this site I thought that the book would be worth buying but unless you are in school or right out of school then your $35 is better spent elsewhere.
I suggest that you put your $35 towards "The Usability Engineering Lifecycle" by Deborah J. Mayhew. Don't let the $64.95 price tag scare you away. This book is worth $100.
Good on concepts, weaker on examples.......2006-02-21
This follow up to About Face is a good overview of the critical concepts to improve software usability. Cooper and Reiman know their stuff. Reading this certainly provides you with the grounding you need to make good decisions. At a tactical level, the book could certainly do more to help with real-world examples.
For that, you may want to take a look instead at Jenifer Tidwell's Designing Interfaces : Patterns for Effective Interaction Design. Where About Face is strong on theory, Designing Interfaces is all about practical ideas, demonstrated through graphical examples.
If UI is an important part of your world, buy them both.

this is a book that will never make you excited with designing spaces, but it is something that you really NEED TO HAVE if doing inerior design. greatest reference book i've seen.
Good Reference Text.......2007-08-23
Good reference text for deminision and clearly illustrated. Only drawback is the data this is based on is a number of years old. That said it is still highly relevant.
Indispensible Resource.......2007-06-13
I purchased this book over 22 years ago and loved it then! I lost my copy during a move and now am looking to repurchase it. Without a doubt, it was one of the most valuable books in my collection for designing custom homes! As an architectural designer, I highly recommend this book to any design professional or student!

Book Description
This book describes the capabilities and limitations of the human operator—both physical and mental—and how these should be used to guide the design of systems with which people interact. General principles of human-system interaction and design are presented, and included are specific examples of successful and unsuccessful interactions. It links theories of human performance that underlie the principles with real-world experience, without a heavy engineering-oriented perspective.
Topics include design and evaluation methods; different systems such as visual, auditory, tactile, vestibular, automated, and transportation; cognition, decision-making, and aesthetics; physiology; and stress, safety, accidents, and human error.
An excellent reference for personnel and managers in the workplace.
Customer Reviews:
Textbook has supported class well........2007-07-19
I've used this book in my human factors grad/undergrad class for 4 years. This book is the only text in human factors with up to date information from research in cognitive science, and a cognitive science perspective on human error. The book is weaker on the ergonomics and design side, and quite weak on social aspects of human factors. I use the book in combination with Don Norman's book and the Casey book of case studies.
I do not require students to memorize the book. They use it as a reference for doing problem solving and case analyses. It contains good research references and many important facts and figures that human factors and design professionals need.
Useless........2006-12-11
This was the single most atrocious example of a "text book" I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with. Very poor editing throughout, and often the outline structure was unnavigable. Adding to that problem, was poor grammar and sections that simply made no sense. "...incentive programs are effective over long periods of time as long as they are not dropped permanently at some point." My suggestion, if you have a class that requires this textbook, find a new class.
Very Poor Writing.......2006-12-09
Just finished a HF course and this was the required text for the course. This text is awful. Very poor writing, incorrect or misleading info is presented, in the area's of work physiology, etc. The author did not explore or offer ANY additional insight in area's such as bio-mechanics etc.. HUGE sections of the text are pure quotes from other sources.. Very poor.. All I can say is thank goodness I was able to sell the book.
Good introduction to Human Factors Engineering.......2002-02-20
Wickens et al. really fill the gap between system engineering and cognitive psychology. I have found quite a few of books of this kind.
The book contains good examples and references for workplace design, environmental conditions and several other applications that make it useful for a course textbook or professional's desk reference.
One word of caution (mea culpa as well): the authors did not address in this version the engineering tradition of poor, monotonous writing.
Extraordinary!.......2000-09-30
Wickens is a true pioneer in the field of human factors who fills the gap between (system) engineering and cognitive psychology with great diligence and competence. This book, "An Introduction to Human Factors Engineering", is another excellent reference tool made for engineers to integrate psychologic research results in their creations; I read it in combination with Wickens' "Engineering Psychology and Human Performance", which concentrates rather on the psychological perspective of human factors than on practical design advices. Both books have considerable overlappings, and are similar to each other, even in the structure of the chapters; nevertheless, I highly recommend them both. I have not (yet) found better literature for this field.
Book Description
Interventions create solutions that alleviate or solve workplace problems. They cause change, small or large, due to improved performance and, thus, have an impact on individuals, groups, or organizations. The number of possible interventions is almost infinite, because any number of organizational, environmental, and people factors affect performance. Interventions facilitate change by interrupting poor behaviors, preventing errors, reducing conflict, or providing vision for the future.
Performance Improvement Interventions: Enhancing People, Processes, and Organizations through Performance Technology is a compendium of interventions based on the International Society for Performance Improvement's (ISPI) Human Performance Technology (HPT) model. After analyzing the workplace performance problem and its cause, HPT practitioners should possess sufficient data to select and design solutions, known as interventions. The HPT model is explained in detail in the ISPI companion book, Fundamentals of Performance Technology: A Guide to Improving People, Process, and Performance (2000).
Performance Improvement Interventions: Enhancing People, Processes, and Organizations through Performance Technology is designed as a desk reference of performance improvement opportunities for almost any need and occasion. The book identifies and explains common interventions by providing the definition and scope of each intervention as well as implementation guidelines. In addition, a job aid is provided for every intervention. Each section or cluster of interventions contains a case study to help the reader visualize implementation and its impact on the workplace.
The book also contains an intervention selection tool. Due to the enormity of intervention options, this tool helps HPT practitioners select the right intervention at the right time. The selection process outlines individual and group phases, and instructs practitioners that successful implementation requires consensus among all affected parties.
Performance Improvement Interventions: Enhancing People, Processes, and Organizations through Performance Technology contains useful information for all HPT practitionersthose who are just entering the field of HPT and those who have been implementing performance solutions for years.

The Calcium Factor Is A Must For Every Home.......2007-07-20
I was very impressed with Robert Barefoot's scientific background, research and conviction to saving Americans as well as the world from themselves and big Pharma. I have applied this information to my own life with astonishing results. Just a few short months ago I thought I was on a doomed path to lifelong chronic disease or early death. After a trip to the ER and follow-ups with my doctors I suggested that perphaps I could have a nutritional deficiency or maybe chronic dehydration was a problem as I knew myself I had not been drinking enough water. This was dismissed by the medical community as nonsense without any testing to prove otherwise. I was told on top of all my other problems, I now had fibromyalgia and was told that there is no cure but we can control it with several prescription drugs (for the rest of my life). Observing the way my doctors were so willing to dismiss nutrition sent me running, and this was before I embarked on a natural, nutritional path. My own commense sense raise serious red flags. I left there and headed for the Internet to research anything I could find on each one of my symptoms, one-by-one. I started a journal with a section devoted to each symptom and researched every known deficiency that would cause that one symptoms instead of looking at all my symptoms as a whole. When I broke down my research in this manner, I suddenly started coming up with 3 main culprits that kept reappearing with each symptom: Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium as well as water and oxgyen. This led me to Robert Barefoot's book, The Calcium Factor, which I eagerly purchased and read within hours of its arrival. It made the most sense of anything I had read or been told to date. Ironically, about the same time I got this book, a friend told me about her experiences and frustrations with her doctor and how she turned she skeptically turned to a procedure called "BioMeridian Feedback" and how it turned her life around. I then found a BioMeridan Feedback Specialist in my area and quickly made an appointment, thinking I had nothing to lose by trying. I was very skeptical so didn't tell the therapist any of my ailments, only that I had heard of this and wanted to check it out. What happened next blew me away. She told me exactly the symptoms I had been experiencing and told me I had a deficiency in Calcium and Potassium. This therapist also informed me that my most serious problem that needed addressing first was acid. This backed up what I had read in this book so I embarked on a regimen of ionic minerals and ionic coral calium. Within days my health and my life began to turn around. Symptoms were disappearing rapidly, my mental acuity sharply increased and I had an incredible surge in energy. I needlessly suffered for over 10 years from symptoms that left me debilitated with pain, fatigue and brain fog, all the while being treated by numerous medical doctors who not once addressed nutrition. A few years back I asked one of my doctors if I could ever hope to be pain free. His reply was, "if you ever wake up and find that you no longer have any pain to be immedialely suspicious that you are dead". No hope was offered by my doctors and apparently a positive mental attitude was not important to them either as this one statement sent me into a state of depression that lasted for years. So as far as I am concerned Robert Barefoot and the others who work tirelessly to bring to light the importance of giving our bodies what GOD put here for us and what we were built to run on should be praised for they are truly Angels. I have since bought several copies of this book for family members and friends. As far as some of the comments about Barefoot's literary skills, I say who gives a s---. I'm not interested in glossy words or propaganda, I can get that from the doctors, I want real evidence and real answers to real problems and that is what Barefoot delivers.
Super book.......2007-07-11
Enjoyed the book. Had already become informed about the deficiencies of
calcium in our American diet. Coral calcium is excellent. Stay with
a top-notch maker such as Standard Process. I don't sell it or have any financial ties to it- just get it from my health care provider - Dr. of
nutrition. Better brands cost more and are dispensed only by health care providers, but you don't have to worry about contamination.
Also, natural health care providers are aware that your tissues can still be acidic even
though the blood may say you are over alkaline. That happens because when
the tissues are acidic and need more alkaline, the body drafts calcium (which is alkaline) from the bones and sends it into the bloodstream to try to compensate. Blood alkaline readings above the normal 7.365 always indicate that the tissues are acidic and the body is sending its alkaline stores (mostly from bones) into the bloodstream to protect your organs.
The only way I could get sane with what to do for my health was to
find a professional who could guide my path. Many chiropractors are also
natural doctors (DN's)and dispense products such as Standard Process
which you can count on.
Give Barefoot a break. He has a good message and nobody's perfect.
to our health.......2007-01-03
This book is a must read for anyone who wants to prevent at least 152 degenerative diseases that we know of! It explains why calcium is SO important to the body, and how it does what it does for us in our bodies. I can prevent cancer just by keeping my body alkaline, since cancer can't live in an alkaline body! Test strips are available to test your saliva so you can keep up on whether or not you are alkaline on any given day and act accordingly. I have been taking coral calcium for years now and am rarely sick. Since just about everyone in my family died of some type of cancer, I am particularly interested in prevention of this disease for myself, my husband, and my two children. I was so excited about this book that I told my holistic doctor about it, to see if he had heard of it and he said, "great book...I have it on my desk in my office." This isn't just, my opinion.
This book is filled with good solid facts on this subject. So for any of you out there who are interested in good health and prevention of lots of degerative diseases, this book is a real gem, and might just prolong your life!
Can't Argue With What Works!.......2006-07-09
Many people have criticized Barefoot for making unsubstantiated claims about coral calcium. I am sure that this calcium doesn't work as effectively for everyone, but it sure worked for me(back pain) my mother,(arthritis), my friend, (pain in foot from diabetes), and as an energy booster to many of my friends. I can't say that it cures cancer. I only know of one guy who used
it for that. He survived, but he was also taking other traditional treatments. But it has lowered my blood pressure, and done so much more. It works!
health enhancer.......2006-03-24
If you, like me, feel uncomfortable with the idea of present cancer treatments that wipe out the immune system, maybe this book has a better way. It references recent medical articles. Slow in parts, but once I realized the theory, I found myself reading it over and over, rechecking each part. I intend to buy some ph paper and test my saliva according to the book. If it shows that I am not in the healthy range, I will work on my diet and supplements until I am in the healthy range. If it works, great. If it does not work, it at least will have me eating more fruits and vegies. Joe
