Good way to find out how to work Photoshop CS.......2005-08-03
I like this book's task approach. Many times I just want to know how to do a specific thing. I can look up that task in this book and see exactly how to do it. Photoshop is very difficult to learn, but this book does a good job of simplifying the most common tasks. Thanks!
Easy to use and comprehensive.......2004-03-05
Are you the type that doesn't want to read an entire book just to get a quick answer? Do you like step by step instructions? Normally step by step instructions means that you need to do the entire book in order. This is great when you are learning to use an application and actually make something as well. But for the times when you want a quick answer AND get it step by step, this book fits the bill.
This book is a step by step reference. It is laid out in a very logical manner and covers the huge range of subjects for Photoshop CS. You can even use it if you have previous versions of Photoshop. The appendix lists all the new features of Photoshop CS and Image Ready CS.
I always love good quality paper in a book and this one not only has great paper but the layout is clean and crisp. Each task includes features such as tips, keyboard shortcuts and cross references. Another feature I particularly like is the interface images have letters in the image to match the description. This makes it easier for you to match the feature in writing to the feature in the interface. This is also done for many of the dialog boxes. There are also PC and MAC screen shots. When the MAC is different, a screen shot is included to show the difference.
Chapters 1-5 includes tasks covering the interface and tools.
Chapters 6-18 has tasks that are universal, such as opening, saving, working with color, canvas, selections, layers, masks, fills, filters, styles, paths, typography and automation. As you can see this covers a huge amount of information and tasks required to tap into the power of Photoshop.
Chapters 19-22 covers photos and videos.
Chapters 23-25 covers print tasks.
Chapters 26-29 covers web tasks.
If you want an answer fast or simply need to brush up on a new technique or tool then this book is the perfect step by step Photoshop CS reference book! When I want to get a quick answer, I reach for this book. I can easily use the index to locate the tool/task I need, go to it, do, it and get out.
Book Description
The Web doesn't stand still, and neither does this guide: Completely updated to cover the new browsers, standards, and CSS, DHTML, and Ajax features that define the Web today, the one thing that hasn't changed in this edition is its task-based visual approach to the topic. In these pages, readers will find friendly, step-by-step instructions for using CSS, DHTML, and Ajax to add visually sophisticated, interactive elements to their Web sites. Using loads of tips and screen shots, veteran author Jason Cranford Teague covers a lot of ground--from basic and advanced dynamic techniques (for example, making objects appear and disappear) to creating effects for newer browsers, migrating from tables to CSS, and creating new DHTML scripts with embedded scroll areas, fixed menu bars, and more. Users new to CSS, DHTML, and Ajax will find this a quick, easy introduction to scripting, while more experienced programmers will be pleased to find practical, working examples throughout the book.

A Great Book .......2007-08-09
A great book for beginners as well as a good reference tool for programmers as well. I bought this book for my 14 year old son who used it to teach himself. He said it was well laid out and has used it quite often.
Good idea, bad execution.......2007-05-29
I looked through this book at a bookstore before buying and I was impressed with the idea of working through with visual examples about what could be done with different manipulations of code (something that is hard to quickly get on the web with many many clicks).
In using this guide, I have though become frequently exasperated by the execution because of confusing examples, what I believe to be mistakes in the code examples in the text, etc...
Comprehensive guide for Server side developers.......2007-05-21
I was looking for a book to get better acquainted with CSS and Ajax. I picked up "Visual Quick start Guide. CSS, DHTML & Ajax." From Peachpit Press. The book is a quick read and it efficiently provides a quick start guide as promised. I particularly liked the example based introductions for all topics covered. Also, I enjoyed the brief introduction the book provides on Web 2.0 and the way the authors define it.
After going through it once you will probably keep it as a quick reference guide, although it is never too hard to find information on web technologies on the web. Overall I could recommend the book if you are not a client side developer and are in need of a brief and comprehensive look at CSS and DHTML. I cannot imagine client side developers being too impressed with the book though.
A good interrelated reference.......2007-04-11
The book does a good job of relating CSS to DHTML and AJAX. The examples are clear and, although simple, clearly demonstrate the interaffects of the 3 web design elements. I had to subtract a star for the inconsistencies between the book code and the downloadable code. They were serious enough to make book code fail. But, if you already understand CSS, are well-acquainted with HTML and can at least read Javascript, then this book will help you leap to DHTML and AJAX.
Just Another Reference.......2007-04-08
I guess I'm spoiled after reading the Visual QuickStart guides by Larry Ullman on PHP and MySQL. In those you actually learn how to use the software by building or programming projects representing real world applications of the concepts being learned. That's the way you learn any skill -- by doing. Along the way, you also learn many valuable insights into why you're doing what you're doing. (It's also a lot of blood, sweat, tears, and frustration -- all an important part of learning!)
CSS, DHTML, & Ajax doesn't live up to that expectation. It's just another reference book, like countless other reference books on these subjects, and in this case, the number of such reference books is huge. If you like the style with lots of screenshots and don't already have a reference book on the subject, it might be worth buying. As one reviewer said, however, screenshots of code that reproduce what's already in the text just take up space that could be used for additional information. (They're very useful when you're actually building projects as a part of your learning.) Also, it's not as well organized and indexed as other reference books, such as those by Wrox. I can't imagine why Peachpit bothered to publish this one.
Just keep in mind that you won't learn to do CSS, DHTML, & Ajax in this book. You only learn skills by doing. Instead, you will read about them. That's a very different thing.

I've never used final cut before and this book doesn't dumb it down enough for a beginner. It does have lots of non beginner techniques however. If your just starting out wait on buying this book.

Good Reference Material.......2007-08-13
All the Peachpit Press Visual QuickStart books are organized well and progress in an appropriate logical manner. The index for this book helps to quickly find the information you need. I build website's regularly and this book extended my knowledge. A good buy.
Hard to follow.......2006-06-07
After reading Elizabeth Castro's HTML book I thought this would be a good next step. However, this book does not stack up anywhere as readable as Castro's book. The CSS part is OK, but the javascript part is poor with hard-to-follow examples using Alice in Wonderland images.
Good purchase.......2006-02-01
I am about half way through the book and like it so far. I wasn't quite sure what to expect though I have purchased Visual QuickStart books before and have been happy with them. All in all I feel like it was a good purchase that I can use.
Sloppy editing--typos all over!.......2005-12-10
I don't know how all the mistakes in this book got past the editors. It is more than just careless typos. There are numerous inconsitancies between the CSS examples given and the web page results. Only as far as the second chapter, I've lost count of the inconsistancies--enough to make me give up on the book. I've checked out the companion web site, and the corrections are not to be found. The poor quality of the book also shakes my faith in Peachpit Press's Visual Quickstart series, which up until now I have enjoyed using.
Excellent Introduction to Dynamic Web Coding.......2005-12-05
This book is for people who already understand programming languages and who have hand-crafted HTML before.
If you are such a person, this book will be very helpful in learning how to create dynamic web pages: CSS plus Javascript plus DOM equals Dynamic HTML.
The skills you will learn in this book will take you to the next level. It does not insult your intelligence with overviews of basic stuff but it does step you through the new material.
I liked it, it helped me and I recommend it.
Book Description
Once you discovered the dynamic, sophisticated sites you could create using DHTML and CSS, you wanted more--more interaction, more accessibility, more animation, more interesting combinations of text and graphics, more everything! This book provides the key. By picking up where his enormously popular Visual QuickStart Guide left off, best-selling author
Jason Cranford Teague explores the advanced DHTML and CSS programming techniques you need to take your Web sites to the next level. Step-by-step instructions and a strong visual format make complex topics understandable, even fun--especially when coupled with the loads of tips, screen shots and practical, working examples that Jason has provided.
Customer Reviews:
Not advanced and misses the point.......2006-03-24
I was greatly disappointed with this book. I have bought many other visual quickpro books which have been great.
This book is not advanced. The examples in this book do not separate content, presentation and function.
Javascript should be separated from the content of the page, not mashed into the (X)HTML as was typically done in early web sites. The javascript hooks in the code examples are invariably hard-coded into onclick=".." attributes. While that may work fine at first, just try updating pages full of onclick attributes and you'll be looking for a better way.
CSS should be used to separate the presentation from the content of the page as much as possible. It seems that the author has 'divitis': there are so many nested divs in some of the examples it's hard to follow the markup.
The book gives lip service to accessibility, but does not follow the concept through: many of the examples will not degrade gracefully in non-javascript enabled browsers. Dynamic html pages _can_ play well with all browsers: this is advanced javascript. If you follow the examples in this book, however, you'll be discriminating against a large part of your audience.
You will get better information in:
For css:
CSS Mastery: Advanced Web Standards Solutions
Web Standards Solutions: The Markup and Style Handbook (Pioneering Series)
For javascript:

Outstanding book - a must have for your library.......2006-02-28
When I first got interested in DHTML I purchased both of Teague's books on DHTML and CSS. They have proved to be invaluable. His writing is easy to understand. The format is easy to follow and consistent throughout. He uses just enough illustrations to demonstrate the subject. His knowledge of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS is exemplary and the examples used in the book are pretty much bug/error free (unlike many books I've read that contain code). If you're just getting started with DHTML, get both of Teague's books. You won't regret it.
It Flipped the Switch that other books didn't.......2006-02-07
I've actually been using CSS for about 8 years now. Mostly just for font/color control, as positioning support wasn't wide spread until the last few years.
This book helped flip the switch on just how pure CSS layouts (header, footer, left nav, body) need to be setup to work. I probably just skipped over something in my other books.
The layouts, practical DTHML menus, and a very useful section on making great looking and performing forms, make this book well worth the price.
Cookbook.......2005-12-18
This is the sequel to the excellent DHTML and CSS for the World Wide Web. It is merely a cookbook of techniques, whereas the first book is an outstanding introduction to an advanced subject.
This book is worth leafing through to find items of interest but it does not advance the state of the art in the way the first book did.
Good but not what I was expecting..........2005-05-26
I was a little surprised that the one chapter on Advanced DHTML techniques could have been titled: "Intro to JavaScript." I was disappointed because there was little on advanced CSS layout (1 chapter) with examples that were difficult to follow.
If you want a book teaching JavaScript and PHP integration this book is for you. If you want a book on advanced CSS techniques that you might want to look elsewhere.
Book Description
Gaskell's witty and poignant comedy of country town life
A gently comic picture of life in an English country town in the mid-nineteenth century, Cranford describes the small adventures of Miss Matty and Miss Deborah, two middle- aged spinster sisters striving to live with dignity in reduced circumstances. Rich with humor and filled with vividly memorable charactersincluding the dignified Lady Glenmire and the duplicitous showman Signor BrunoniCranford is a portrait of kindness, compassion, and hope.
Download Description
In this classic portrait of life in a quiet English village of the early nineteenth century, Elizabeth Gaskell writes with wit and affection of the foibles, follies and endearing eccentricities of its occupants as they struggle to maintain standards in their genteel poverty. This witty and poignant comedy, with its ironic observations on the pretensions of class is told through the eyes of a young woman who befriends the elderly ladies of Cranford.
Customer Reviews:
Full of charm and wit.......2007-06-03
Delightful, surely one of the most charming novels ever written. Using the lightest of touches, Mrs. Gaskell pokes fun at the simple people who inhabit the provincial community of Cranford in rural England in the 1840s, a village we are told at the beginning that is curiously "in possession of the Amazons": its male inhabitants nowhere to be found. Told in the form of reports by a frequent visitor to the village (Mary Smith) from a more cosmopolitan place, we are made privy to the disappointments, hopes, fears, and affronts of a number of the female residents, particularly Miss Matty Jenkyns and Mrs. Jamieson. All are related humorously, some wildly so. My favorite scenes include Mrs. Jamieson's defense of Samuel Johnson over Captain Brown's preference for Dickens's Boz and the sad story of Peter Jenkyns who is insulted by his father and runs away to join the navy. But every chapter offers its delights, and it's easy to see, as Frank Swinnerton mentions in the introduction, how many people at one time knew the book by heart. Long a best seller in the Everyman's Library, it's sad to see the book not included in the recent reissue of 100 of that library's most popular books, a gross oversight for sure.
Victorian Zen.......2007-03-18
Sherwood Anderson once described life as a "history of moments". Miss Gaskell has created in Cranford a glimpse into a dying culture of the more egalitiarian rural Bitish Yoemanry of the 18th century collapsing under the urbanization of the society and with a more repressive capitalism to claim the lives and souls of the youth leaving the village for better lives. Goldsmith's the "Deserted Village" comes to mind.
The story is told from the lives of elderly mostly female, spinster as well as widowed community of genteel rural poverty- self imposed and otherwise. Quaint yet, but with vinegary pithiness of death, stoicism and social veneer, in other words real life. This is civilized 19th century social writing at its best, like a journalistic Austen. The unnamed narrator is a wise insightful character commenting on the eccentric and slightly mad village women who make up this world. The rivalry between Captain Brown and Miss Jenkyns based upon their literary preference of Dr. Johnson vs Charles Dickens is especially amusing considering that Cranford first appeared in Dicken's magazine, "Household Words". Endearing and haunting- much more than its surface appearance.
A pleasant read for Gaskell fans.......2006-06-26
Elizabeth Gaskell's Wives & Daughters and North & South have recently become two of my favorite books, so it stood to reason that I should check out her other novels. When I read Cranford I already knew that it wouldn't have a coherent plot, so I wasn't disappointed about that. What I found was a short but slow read made charming because of Gaskell's humor and elegant style of writing.
Plotwise, it reminded me of L.M. Montgomery's stories, because Montgomery usually features young girls being brought up by dominant spinsters in small towns. Cranford doesn't include children of any variety, but similar quirks of aging ladies and domestic life are depicted. Of course, Gaskell's writing is not quite as saccharine as Montgomery's.
Men are so rare in this novel that they are great curiosities, to the main characters and to the reader. My only complaint is that the narrator (I think her name was Mary Smith) did not talk more about herself. Was she destined to grow old without love just like her friend Miss Mattie?
I was tempted to give Cranford 4 stars just because it is Gaskell, but it is not a book I would read more than once or twice. I can't imagine that I would have enjoyed as much if I hadn't already been obsessed with the author.
cranford.......2005-10-23
A delightful portrait of a somnolent English village in mid-nineteenth century Midlands, striving to shut out the noisy industrializing forces changing the world as they knew it. Vivid portraits of the largely single women--spinsters or widows--who dominate the social life of the town and their struggles to control who gets invited to tea parties etc and who doesn't, their criticisms of who doesn't observe the proprieties, and their underlying good-heartedness. In other words, Gaskell observes the manners and the people of this world with great insight and wit, not just looking at struggles to define etiquette but also at the last vestiges of a peaceful rural place and the changes being thrust upon its classes--working, middle, and nobility.
Cranford / Knutsford.......2005-04-21
A very quick review. A beautifully written book filled with the feminine niceties and social customs of provincial early 19th Century life. A very interesting read to myself as I was born at Cranford Lodge, Knutsford, the true market town in the north of England that Gaskell based her novel on. A visit to Knutsford itself brings out the flavour of the writing and tours of "Cranford" including Miss Matty's house and the Assembly Rooms at the George can be arranged through the Gaskell Society!

Since the cost of entry into the world of filmmaking has plummeted with the introduction of such technologies as the DV camera, Apple's FireWire protocol, and the ever-increasing speed of desktop computers, there are more people than ever creating high-quality independent films. Final Cut Pro 3 and the Art of Filmmaking teaches these new filmmakers the necessary, basic skills for polishing their elementary work.
The authors begin their approach with an introduction to the necessary hardware and software, installing Final Cut Pro, and a tour of the interface. They focus on editing and adding transitions, then take a look at adding titles and filters. You'll learn about compositing, keying, and using Final Cut Pro's motion controls, as well as fine-tuning audio tracks. The last part of their book discusses what to do with your film after the editing is done: compressing for DVDs and the Web, archiving the project, and printing to video.
It's worth noting that this book does not come with a CD-ROM. The authors have included instead a DVD full of project files, raw footage, and a short but complete documentary. This offers an editor the excellent opportunity to look over the shoulder of a working professional, discovering how and why something is cut the way it is. The DVD also contains the project files and source clips needed for most of the chapters throughout the book, giving the reader a chance to work along with each chapter using the very same footage.
Final Cut Pro 3 and the Art of Filmmaking offers a sound introduction to editing in general and using Final Cut Pro in particular. Each chapter is well illustrated and written, and almost every feature of Final Cut Pro is explained. While this book lacks the depth sought by more advanced users, it presents a friendly and informative approach for the new one. Through a tutorial-based approach and supplied material, the features of this powerful editing tool become accessible and familiar, making this book a worthy asset to any beginning Final Cut Pro editor. --Mike Caputo

Not bad- not great.......2003-10-08
The book has many great techniques and explains every function in FCP very well with step by step guides and suggestions. Unfortunately, many of the examples are not tailored for real world editing (the chroma-key section for example). Would have preferred that they use some real world situations for their examples.
And I can't help but concur with everyone else about the quality of the book. Within the first few minutes of reading, the book was falling apart and pages were dropping out of the book. Shoddy workmanship by the publisher!
A great, well done book!.......2003-04-10
A wish that other software books would be as this... beyond Final Cut it cover many aspects of video editing and is a great source of tips of any kind, very useful for beginners (but also good for experienced video editors who have forgotten some aspects about their work).
The design layout and color images of the book are very nice too.
A Problem with Binding of the book.......2002-11-30
This is a great book with the exception that the construction of the book is defective. It is not sewn and the long rectangular shape caused my copy to fall apart in spite of my careful handling. Too bad because I love the book. But it is literally now all over the place and pages are stacked together . A definite problem with construction of the book.
A Great Book for New Final Cut 3 Users.......2002-07-16
As a "rank beginner" I was very impressed with the author's ability to convey the information. He covered Final Cut Pro 3 in a wonderful step by step process. Along the way he made sure that each process was clearly stated. Since I have no prior knowledge of working with Final Cut Pro 3, I appreciated the approach that was taken.
If you are in the market for a FCP3 book, give this one STRONG consideration.
High Price but HIGH VALUE!!.......2002-06-16
The authors do a bang up job of covering Final Cut Pro. The content of this book is only surpassed by the excellent execution of its design. Content is well-written, clear and easily understandable. As if this weren't enough, the authors outdo themselves by using a design concept for their FCP3 topics that make already clear explanations, crystal clear. It's obvious that much of the book's high price is due to the high quality screen shots and illustrations all of which are in color. Color makes all the difference, especially when talking about FCP3 where color in the application itself conveys information to the user. The screen shots chosen by the authors to illustrate their explanations make this book a perfect choice for beginners or intermediate users. An excellent book, an excellent buy.

The Revolution: A Field Manual for Changing Your World
Customer Reviews:
One sided and poorly written.......2007-08-12
This book covers a number of topics that evangelical Christians *do* need to educate themselves on, such as the AIDs crisis, gang warfare and the environment. The first few chapters of this book cover subject matter that most Christians - and non-Christians for that matter - will find broad agreement on. However, as you progress through the book, the leftist agenda becomes so obvious that you begin to question the book's objectivity. For instance, the chapter on the death penalty is written by a strident death penalty opponent who consistently applies straw man arguments. The chapter called "War and Peace" is a disaster. By this point, the reader will not be the least bit surprised to find that another left wing activist and pacifist writes this chapter. If you're looking for a good intellectual analysis of the Just War doctrine or acknowledgement that good Christians can come to to different conclusions about this topic, you will not find it in this chapter, either.
Clearly, this book was written with an agenda. But I'm not sure how much this actually advances the agenda of turning a moderate or conservative evangelical towards the progressive world view, because so many of the arguments are simply not that compelling or balanced.
Great enthusiasm, not very practical.......2006-08-29
I'm all about the idea of "Let's change the world." I speak about that message incessantly. My audiences get tired of hearing me utter those words I suspect. But as communicators it is our job to provide practical, doable, ways that can be immediately walked out ways of doing what we are calling people to.
Absolutely love the attitude behind the editor and various writers of each chapter of this book and the bottom line of the book, which essentially calls people to live radically differently. The only problem is - with a couple of exceptions - in order to carry out the ideas taken on in each chapter one would have to fly to another part of the world to put the action plan into practice or have an enormous amount of money to commence with the change. Considering the reading audience (Relevant readers) I suspect most will be frustrated when it comes to applying the ideas here.
Mother Teresa said of the US, "There is plenty to do right around you... don't fly to Calcutta. Open your eyes and get to work!"
Read this book and allow your heart to be captured by the zeal of each author, then get to work in your own backyard / city. Yes, we can change the world right here, right now.
A great manual.......2006-07-09
This was a great read. Easy to follow, great stories from experienced servants in social justice issues. Chapters are short and to the point. You read it and feel more equipped with what to do.
For want of works.......2006-06-13
Reading about social issues is like reading about physical fitness. I develop a tic, like restless leg syndrome. Don't get me wrong- collecting information and quotes is one of my favorite pastimes, but certain issues are a bugaboo to my conscience. When it comes to my top five- poverty, capital punishment, fair trade, peace, and hunger- I get impatient with sitting still, with learning. It's a good thing that The Revolution: A Field Manual for Changing your World is so easily digestible. Written and edited to answer the question "What can I do?" The Revolution is slickly edited for audiences disconnected from the problems addressed. It's four steps for action- donate, activate, educate and pray- belie the cushion that separates rich Christians from what Ron Sider calls "an age of hunger."
What troubles me is why we need slick editing to prompt us to action. The Revolution, with its motivating pull quotes, enervating sidebars and zine feel, is aimed at young Christians, and the niche market ensures that the book is sure to be noticed by those who are justice-minded. The essayists' anecdotes and research confirms our passion and the shame is that these may be lost to key audiences.
As I read I get a tic; I want to leap to action- to determine how this content may be used to educate and activate the Christians numbed by the ticker tape of human tragedy racing on the periphery of our consciousness. If only I could donate the book to educate campus-church Christians so they can study how to activate purposefully. But, until churches and small groups integrate action into their studies, I'm afraid that nothing will change. Small groups will wrap up with the only Christian work in which most are disciplined- prayer. What the book doesn't do is demonstrate that social justice involves other disciplines including inconvenience, long-term commitment and worn-out knees.
Must Read.......2006-05-09
One of the most important for Christians in the last ten years. Evangelical culture is headead for a significant chance, and this book will be considered a watershed event in this shift. If you want to be challened, informed and even entertained, you won't be disappointed. I couldn't put it down!.

Final Cut Express Solutions.......2004-06-20
I had been using iMovie for about three years and started feeling that I had pretty much mastered it. Not that my movies were going to win any Oscars, but rather, my creativity was limited by what iMovie would allow me to do.
Apple must have heard me grumbling about iMovie and must have known I couldn't afford Final Cut Pro, so they created Final Cut Express. When I finally received this software, I realized I was over my head; I didn't even know how to begin using it. My solution was getting the book "Final Cut Express Solutions" by Jason Cranford Teague and David Teague.
One of my initial observations was the full-color pages throughout the book. Most software books are black and white and boring. I found myself looking forward to the next chapter because each chapter builds on previous chapters. As I progressed through the book, I used the project files and clips provided on the Companion DVD to help me learn each chapter.
The first chapter, "The Hardware Setup," was very informative. The authors take the time to advise what hardware is important to the success of your editing in Final Cut Express. Since then, I've purchased additional memory (I now have 768 MB SDRAM) and a 160 GB external FireWire hard disk for my iMac.
Audio is an area I need the most training with. Chapter 8 "Adding Audio," gives me exactly what I need to be able to fully utilize all the audio control Final Cut Express has to offer. I learned about room tone and world tone; recorded silence in interior and exterior areas respectively.
Titles! I was so limited with iMovie titles, that all my movies had the same look. Chapter 9 "Adding Titles and Finishing Up," offers a wealth of titling options. The authors even provided a section on "Creating Final Cut Express Titles in Photoshop."
A very unique and very powerful tool the authors use is the "Movie Night!" feature. At the end of each chapter (except Chapter 10), you'll find a purple box that highlights a movie where the authors talk about some unique editing features of that particular movie. What's really cool is how the authors use each movie to further discuss that chapters' topic. For example, in Chapter 9 "Adding Titles and Finishing Up," the authors explain how Alfred Hitchcock used a title sequence to capture the audience at the beginning of the movie "Vertigo."
I'm not a Final Cut Express expert yet, but with the guidance found in "Final Cut Express Solutions," I find my movie making abilities far beyond what I was doing with iMovie. The authors say it best, "That is what you will get out of this book: a thorough understanding of what it takes to get a movie made." If you have Final Cut Express, get this book. If you don't have Final Cut Express yet, get it soon, then get this book.
Not Enough..........2004-03-08
After completing several projects using various versions of iMovie, I've recently made the switch to Final Cut Express to increase my editing capabilities.
I'm disappointed in this book, which was offered for $40 at the Apple store when buying the Final Cut Express software.
The text lacks in-depth information about FCE's video and audio filters, and fails to adequately cover the software basics. The authors' suggest their own website for more information, but there's nothing on it.
I'm going to try Tom Wolsky's book and hope for a better guide.
Final Cut Express Solutions review.......2003-10-29
Before you read Final Cut Express Solutions or invest in the Final Cut Express software, it's important to realize that Final Cut Express is not for everyone. Some people are quite happy with iMovie. And yet others want more latitude in their creativity. Final Cut Express does just that and Final Cut Express Solutions will show you how.
Personally, I find Final Cut Express to be intimidating. It's not as novice friendly as iMovie, but that's the price you pay when you get more creative options. Final Cut Express Solutions does a great job of walking you through the process of creating your own movie. The book has a nice flow to it; it doesn't just jump in with all the neat stuff you can do with footage. Final Cut Express Solutions tells you exactly what the steps are in creating a movie and explains what you're seeing, right from the very first time you open Final Cut Express.
The book uses a combination of text and screen shots to guide you through the various features of Final Cut Express. I find screen captures to be an absolute must in any software tutorial. And this book is heavy on screen captures, pretty much one for every command or feature that is being shown. There is also a CD-ROM that accompanies the Final Cut Express Solutions text, which provides project footage to show what the various features of Final Cut Express can do. You can even edit the footage for practice. In fact, the book refers to the footage as it shows you various features. I would recommend using the CD-ROM along with the book as indicated in the text of Final Cut Express Solutions.
Final Cut Express Solutions is organized extremely well and serves as a quick reference for various functions of creating a movie. Chapters follow a roughly chronological order in the process of making a movie, focusing on topics such as importing footage, editing, audio, and many more.
One requirement that is spelled out right from the start is that you'll need QuickTime Pro. You can buy QuickTime Pro directly from Apple (www.apple.com/quicktime) for $29.99. Final Cut Express works seamlessly with QuickTime Pro and is necessary for some of the topics that the book covers.
This is the only Final Cut Express guide I have reviewed, but I have reviewed one other Sybex book, iMovie 3 Solutions, an excellent book. Final Cut Express Solutions follows an identical format and feel and is also an excellent book.
Final Cut Express is not a book that you will read and then just put away on the shelf. It is an excellent reference book that you will need frequently as you delve more into the advanced features of Final Cut Express.
Book Description
Women’s migration within Mexico and from Mexico to the United States is increasing; nearly as many women as men are migrating. This development gives rise to new social negotiations, which have not been well examined in migration studies until now. This pathbreaking reader analyzes how economically and politically displaced migrant women assert agency in everyday life. Scholars across diverse disciplines interrogate the socioeconomic forces that propel Mexican women into the migrant stream and shape their employment options; the changes that these women are making in homes, families, and communities; and the “structural violence” that they confront in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands broadly conceived—all within the economic, social, cultural, and political interstices of the two countries.
This reader includes twenty-three essays—two of which are translated from the Spanish—that illuminate women’s engagement with diverse social and cultural challenges. One contributor critiques the statistical fallacy of nativist discourses within the United States that portray Chicana and Mexican women’s fertility rates as “out of control.” Other contributors explore the relation between sexual violence and women’s migration from rural areas to urban centers within Mexico, the ways that undocumented migrant communities challenge conventional notions of citizenship, and young Latinas’ commemorations of the late, internationally renowned singer Selena. Several essays address workplace intimidation and violence, harassment and rape by U.S. border patrol agents and maquiladora managers, sexual violence, and the brutal murders of nearly two hundred young women near Ciudad Juárez. This rich collection highlights both the structural inequities faced by Mexican women in the borderlands and the creative ways they have responded to them.
