Book Description
Stalking has emerged as a major social issue over the past decade to become the subject of intensive clinical and research study. This volume combines the authors' extensive clinical experience working with stalkers and their victims with a critical and thorough review of the existing literature. Major topics of discussion include the emergence and definition of stalking; effects and reduction of impacts on victims; and types of stalking. The authors have provided an informative, practical, and absorbing work that is a major step forward in elucidating the nature, causes, impact, and management of stalking.
Customer Reviews:
Lucid, well researched and useful.......2005-01-12
This book is well organized, articulate and insightful. The only reason why I did not give it 5 stars is because the case law cited specific to stalking was rather outdated. Excellent for a theoretical framework surrounding the issue of stalking.

Book Description
What is a dangerous man? Most women would answer: one who is physically violent. But abusive behavior is often more insidious. Men who want mothers, not partners, who prey on lonely, passive women, who are mentally ill, addicted, or emotionally unavailable, or who won't go away when asked to leave all fall into this dangerous category. In this book women are encouraged to take responsibility for their own safety, are shown how to choose men wisely, and learn how not to make the same mistake twice. Thirteen chapters cover all the red flags of a dangerous man, offer stories of women's successes and failures dealing with each type, and provide safe ways to get out of a hazardous relationship. Armed with this valuable information, women have the tools they need to cultivate positive and healthy relationships with men.

Excellent content, professional; easy to find info.......2007-07-14
Wish this book was out years ago! Very good regarding subtle signs (as well as obvious) early in the relationship. Love the Red Alert Checklists.
This is NOT a "man bashing" book, the author invites us to look at ourselves as well. Describes some behaviors that women may have that attract a dangerous man.
How to Spot a Dangerous Man Before you get Involvd.......2007-05-26
This book showed me what I was doing wrong, and it enabled to to avoid other dangerous men - it greatly changed my life. Thanks!
eye opener.......2007-05-19
Sometimes we avoid stress by keeping ourself in the dark....however learn that it takes more energy to move around in the dark than the light. The more we know, the brighter the light...the brighter the light the easier it is not to trip on the trash on the floor. The men have issues...we may as gentle women learn to forgive them spiritually, however their behavior is "Trash" and they are acting as if they do not understand the word "Respect"...they don't. The sad part is...the absolute saddest part is...they don't get it....and you cannot teach a person to have a conscious...reading this book helps the light become bright and your life to be easier rather than more stressful. Once you read this you can identify it is "them" with the problem...and your only problem was "Believing in them" and taking their lies for truth. This book does uncover hurtful truths...however a truth is a truth and is there whether you want to believe it or not.
Yikes! I'm so glad I read this book!.......2007-03-07
If you've ever wondered if you're the "crazy one," or why you seem to attract losers, this is a very insightful book.
This book opened my eyes to what a bad situation I was in, and just how bad it could end up. I always suspected that some of the guys I've dated had mental problems but would talk myself out of it. Now I see how important it is to trust these initial red flags and uneasy feelings. Even if your guy is not pathological, if you've got red flags and discomfort, this book wisely advises you to get out fast and why. The unfortunate thing about these dangerous men is that they are so charming, affectionate, intelligent, and desirable at first, that you are long-since hooked before the creep in them emerges. This book gives practical advice for how to recognize potential issues before you're hooked and his personality has changed.
For anyone who's skeptical, no, I did not think this was a male-bashing book or "any guy could fit into those categories." Not so. It even gives a list of traits to look for when analyzing whether yours is a healthy or unhealthy relationship.
It's a quick read and well worth it.
"Truth is light".......2007-01-28
How to Spot a Dangerous Man is a compelling, forthright, no non-sense book which will help the open-minded reader face her relationship/insecurity (among other things) demons. Ms. Brown not only discusses the how's, the why's, but offers insight on how to stop the madness. I just purchased four additional copies to pass on to my daughters and the workbook for myself.
The fact that professional women, older women, previously hurt women are continually falling for dangerous men is eye-opening. The facts are not to be ignored; IF, you want to do something different.
I highly recommend this book for ALL women; young and old.
Book Description

First, you define safe social drinking and learn five healthy drinking guidelines. Then, each week you learn new clinically-proven strategies and techniques to help you stay within the guidelines you learned the first week. How to manage drinking desire, pace your drinking, pre-plan for drinking occasions and learn from your slips are all covered. By the end of the program, alcohol is less important to you, you're drinking less and enjoying it more!
Customer Reviews:
Best Book To Improve Drinking Habits!.......2007-07-31
This is the best book I've read about moderate drinking and how to get there.
Most of the time I don't have a problem with alcohol but sometimes it takes
over and I drink too much. I have found the suggestions in this book invaluable,
especially pre-planning my drinking behavior with the tips in the program,
eating while I'm drinking and watching the clock to slow down my drinking.
That's just for starters. Cornett gives lots of tips and also works on your
attitude about alcohol and its importance in your life.
I think this book could change the world and have given it to friends who
drink too much.
Not for hard drinkers.......2007-05-17
The book is well written and includes good guidelines to follow if you are not a serious drinker.
Problem Drinker or Alcoholic? It Doesn't Matter!.......2006-07-04
I don't know if I was a problem drinker or alcoholic. I don't care - I'm not into labels. But I do know I wanted to drink less and become less dependent on alcohol. And 7 Weeks helped me. One message in the book is you've got to take responsibility for your drinking instead of chalking it up to genes or a bad childhood or whatever. Another message is you can change if you want to. And Cornett gives concrete tips to cut down.
Who care if you're a "problem drinker" or "alcoholic"? If you want to drink less and have a healthier relationship with alcohol, 7 Weeks is for you. I'd pay twice the price for this book if I had to do it all over again.
A Winner for Anyone Questioning Their Drinking.......2005-11-30
This book has been a lifesaver for me. For years I enjoyed social drinking without problems, but the last couple of years I've questioned if I was drinking too much. This program showed me how to pace my drinking, how to make a drinking plan in advance before I started drinking(which really worked)and how to stick to my limit fairly easily. It also made alcohol less important to me - a huge step in the right direction to get back on the healthy social drinking path again. I recommend this book to anyone questioning their drinking. It's a straightforward approach to drink less and drink appropriately.
Loved this book!.......2005-08-11
I wish I had discovered this book 10 years ago. It spelled out how to achieve moderate drinking. It was easy to follow and best of all it worked for me! There are only a few books out that cover the subject of changing drinking behavior. One is filled with stats, boring and hard for me to stay interested in. Another one was too general - no specifics to help me manage drinking. 7 Weeks held my interest and gave specific tips to keep alcohol consumption down and to beat problem drinking.

Good information for Women and Men.......2007-01-26
I have read this book several times along wtih Armed and Female and Stayin Alive. I had my wife read this and it changed her mind about gun ownership and self defense. She now has a pistol and we train together at the range every two weeks. Thanks Paxton for providing such an eye opener and for helping my wife make the decision to protect herself. I recommend this book for everyone.
I learned a lot.......2006-02-03
I have to say, I was very impressed with this book. I work a job that would be considered unsafe for just about anybody. I am a Home visit nurse. I travel at night to unknown areas, sometimes in the worst part of town. I have been doing this for years, and I guess in my own way got "comfortable" with it. There were a lot of things I hadn't thought about in protecting myself and this book really was an eyeopener. Women can be attacked at anytime and anywhere, it can be during the day, nice well lit areas, or at night. I wasn't really sure what to do in a dangerous situation. Although it is ultimately up to us, this gives you great ideas for safety, protection and awareness of your environment. I sure am glad to have this book!
Great, practical advice for all women.......2005-10-17
This book is great!! Buy it for your mothers, daughters, sisters, girlfriend, any woman who is near and dear to you. It has a lot of practical information on keeping yourself safe in our crazy world. I'm giving it to my sister and mom for Christmas! It applies not only to women, but to any person.
Clear, concise, necessary information for women.......2002-07-12
This book was a gift from my brother. I read the intro and couldn't put it down! Quigley writes well, gives excellent examples and reasonable measures any of us can take to improve our awareness and our sense of security. This book, along with Gavin de Becker's books (Gift of Fear and Protecting the Gift) are great gift ideas for women and parents. Very empowering.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2007-07-20
George Dillman's book on pressure point self-defense is well illustrated and the techniques are easily understood. Understanding pressure points is another skill to be utilized in dealing quickly with an attacker. If you are in the military than this book is probably not for you, but for all civilians out there this book offers the opportunity for a lower impact, non-lethal way to deal with aggressive individuals.
My Rating of the Delivery of This Product.......2007-03-18
I have yet to read this book because I still have other books bought from Amazon.com that I need to finish. In all cases [...] and associated vendors have provided me with nothing but outstanding service where the product arrived in as good or in better condition than advertised within the stated estimated time of delivery.
The service received is a model for all businesses to emulate.
Thankyou very much for requesting my input.

Easy, simple self defense........2007-03-16
I ordered this book for my teenage daughter. Then ordered one for myself. And I will order more for other family members and friends. I have reviewed, purchased and returned several other books with instructions and techniques you simply aren't going to master from a book. Dillman understands that and cuts to the chase with really simple but effective self defense methods you won't find elsewhere.
Nothing Groundbreaking.......2007-01-21
At first glance this book looked really good however, once I purchased it I found out that it was oversimplified. Mainly just pictures of patterned movements of where to strike an attacker, with no hope of replicating the movments in real life for the average person. The best book I have come across so far is Attack Proof by Perkins. Have a look at Attack Proof first before buying this one, you wont regret it.
Ego and the Dillman Series.......2006-02-11
I found the book informative after getting past all the who's who pictures in the first part. The first ten pages are of Dillman and the celebraties he has hob nobbed with over the years.
I am more impressed with the actual content which is what this book should be about. Learning pressure/vital points and how to use them in self-defense.
I would purchase his other books and will skip the ego pages.

Book Description
The new bible of women's self-defense. This important book dispels popular myths about guns and discusses the pros and cons of means of self protection for women.
Customer Reviews:
Maybe good for beginners.......2007-05-12
Paxton Quigley's book is a compliation of parts of other books on firearms self protection. It's a bit overdone, and probably would scare the average woman thinking about protecting herself. Women seem to have special problems protecting themselves. They usually do not want to hurt anyone, and they will do all most anything for a baby or a family member before they will do anything to protect themselves. However, women that are able to continue to practice with a hand gun, usually become quite proficent. They know that they don't know, and they listen to instructions. Most men think they know it all already.
by a woman for women.......2007-05-03
It is ironic that the people who need to have a gun the most are the ones who are afraid to own one: women. Paxton Quigley has been working to change all that. This little book gives a quickie course on what women need to know and why they need to know it. The book contains a number of true stories of women using guns to protect themselves. And as every such book needs to do, it exposes all the lies the media tell about guns.
Give a copy of this to every woman friend you have. After reading this, you'll be wondering why you and everyone else in this society has been so convinced for so long that it is a bad thing to have a gun around. This book explodes many of the lies and myths that have been packed around the image of the gun and the notion of gun-ownership, as well as the image of gun owners (read "gun nuts"). The biggest myth, of course, is "911". People infer almost magical powers to dialing 911. Read this book and find out why only doing that is suicidal.
The Second Amendment is needed now more than ever, because now not only the Second but the First and Fourth Amendments are slipping away; and this is happening at the most critical time in our history. If you don't know why, read While America Sleeps: How Islam, Immigration and Indoctrination Are Destroying America From Within. Things are going to get worse, much worse. People living near the border already have guns: they need them every day. But illegals and jihadists are being bussed throughout the country. They blend in with the peaceful and moderate and are "invisible" until they strike. Then, everyone says, "why didn't we see them?" Read Michelle Malkin's book and its stories about crimes committed by these people. We don't have much time. Learn why, then act to protect yourself.
Buy the 1993 version instead........2007-02-12
I bought this book thinking it would be an updated and improved version of the 1993 book "Armed & Female" by the same author. That book was excellent, and I wanted to have the latest version.
Unfortunately, what I received was a much more expensive "pamphlet" (only 160 pages for over ten dollars) that abounds with typographical errors, to the point that the errors change the meaning of the sentence in several places. As if that weren't enough, much of the content appears to have been cribbed from various blogs and Web pages that can be read for free after a simple Google search.
To sum up: The 1993 version of Armed and Female is a well-written and interesting resource, albeit slightly dated in technical recommendations on ammunition, calibers, and of course the makes and models of available handguns.
THIS book is unfortunately only an overpriced, badly printed rehash of information available elsewhere.
Protection Advice.......2007-01-06
All of Paxton Quigleys self protection books are written for women but are in general excellent advice for both sexes. Men are usually stronger & larger than most women so a well trained female in the use of a firearm and the knowledge of when to use it in todays society is almost a necessity. I purchased these books as gifts for the women I care about, as a guide which points them in the correct direction.
A detailed exploration into the issues of female self-protection.......2006-03-08
Expertly written by Paxton Quigly, "Stayin' Alive: Armed and Female in an Unsafe World" presents a detailed exploration into the issues of female self-protection. On page after page the reader will discover practical advice on handling diverse threatening situations, critically important commentary to which they may refer when finding themselves in such positions. The problems of rape, molestation, and undesired groping are effectively dealt with through the mean of furthering of education of the reader with what Paxton Quigly has to offer her readers. "Stayin' Alive; Armed And Female In An Unsafe World" is a very strongly recommended reading and instructive, practical guide for women seeking their own form of defense from sexual predators and physical abusers.
Customer Reviews:
A nearly flawless book on a fascinating subject.......1998-04-20
There have been plenty of how-to self defense books. Lots of pictures of techniques, lists of street-awareness skills, and recovery literature. This may be the first detailed treatment by an academic about what self-defense is what it does for the women who take it up, and why some people (including a disturbing number of feminists and government types) are so ambivalent about it.
Dr. McCaughey has done an excellent job of looking into the history of the self-defense movement, the philosophy behind it, and the people involved in it. She wasn't content to make grand pronouncements from behind her word processor. She went out, got involved in her subject, experienced it, and met the people who actually do what she writes about.
This book was written at least partially for an academic audience, so the general reader will have to wade through a little bit of jargon. The author leaves out a couple possibly useful points, and I do not agree with everything she says. But these are minor objections. The field of women's self defense finally has an inspirational scholar who treats it with the depth and seriousness it deserves.
A very good book for any woman to read.......1998-01-02
As a former federal agent and owner of a personal protection company that teaches full-contact self defense for women and police defensive tactics, I found this book to be very good. While I may disagree with some individuals Martha spoke with, her book brings out what those of us who teach serious women's self defense have known for ages - SELF-EMPOWERMENT IS THE KEY !!! Good job Martha !

Frank and Barbara Holloway, the Pacific Northwest father-daughter legal duo familiar to Wilhelm's (For the Defense, Defense for the Devil) many fans, go east of the Cascades to Oregon's ruggedly beautiful high desert to investigate the strange death of Vinny Jessup. Was it a suicide staged to look like murder by Vinny's young wife Lara in order to collect a big insurance policy? Or was it murder set up to look like suicide by a right-wing judge in line for a nomination to the Supreme Court---the man Vinny Jessup believed responsible for framing his beloved younger son for murder nearly two decades ago? Wilhelm's strong suit is character development; here she introduces Manny Truewater, an intriguing Native American lawyer who was Vinny's partner and best friend (and worthy of a starring role in his own book), and also adds new dimensions to both the Holloways with a love affair that tests Barbara's commitment to her personal independence and a nascent career for Frank as a published writer. She's at her best when describing the power structures of a small town and the relationships that tie the Jessups to the ambitions of the people who really run things; while the pace is leisurely, the writing is assured, the ends neatly tied up, and the gorgeous landscape of a harsh and rugged region beautifully depicted. --Jane Adams
Book Description
Barbara Holloway's a trial lawyer who tends to take on difficult cases. One involved a woman accused of killing her own child, another involved a mentally handicapped man, and her last one found her entangled in such a mess that it's a wonder she lived through it at all.
But in every previous case she has had some fragment with which she could build an argument. This time out, it seems there's no defense at all.
Lara and Vinny Jessup had a lovely May-December marriage. It renewed his lease on life after a battle with cancer, and it rescued her from a bad first marriage.
Initially, the sheriff out in Loomis County thinks that Vinny died when his car rolled over on a bad curve on Lookout Mountain. Then he finds the gunshot wound. Was it suicide or was it murder? With a large insurance policy as her motive, Lara could have staged the death---or so it appears to the sheriff.
Barbara Holloway finds herself drawn to the Oregon desert to take on this case, accompanied by her associates: her colleague Shelley with her Barbie-doll looks, the inimitable detective Bailey Novell, and her father Frank (who's soon to be a published writer!).
But the case itself is as dead as the desert. Is there any defense at all?
Compelling and distinctive, this drama demonstrates anew why Kate Wilhelm is considered a master of the form.

No Courtroom Drama Here........2005-11-11
A lawyer's worst nightmare is having an innocent client with no defense. It's easier to get a known criminal off or with a reduced sentence by admitting to a lesser charge, but to prove a person did not commit a crime when only mitigating charges can send him to jail for something he did not do is common and almost impossible to prove or disprove.
I do believe that the state of Oregon is populated with transplants from Tennessee who name the places after the towns they left behind. Strawberry Mountain could be Strawberry Plains north of Knoxville, and everybody knows that Lookout Mountain is in Chattanooga. They even have a town named McMinnville after one in Middle Tennessee.
These mountain people with their ranches and gun-justice as different from those in the East. The western part of the United States was full of outlaws, cowboys, bank robbers, those who bought their own justice. These legal maneuverings took place in conference rooms, hallways, anywhere except the courtroom where the judge is supposed to be impartial and dispense justice fairly. It never works that way. Most judgments are decided on in private conferences and already in written form before the perpetrator ever gets to stand before his judge.
This story is no exception. From start to finish, you know that the accused is not guilty of her husband's murder, which she thought had been a possible suicide. Her lawyers take her on an emotional joyride before making sure she goes free. But, that's the way lawyers enjoy doing things. It makes them feel like saviors and deserving of the high costs they exact for play-acting in and out of court. Criminal lawyers bluff their way by blackmailing the other side, and sometimes the judge. Judges love to grandstand. It's all here in much detail. In the past, I worked for some lawyers and know first hand how the judges use and abuse them, sometimes just for the fun of it. Once, I was told by the police chief that "don't you know, there is no justice." I do know that smalltown judges hate big city lawyers, and will do anything in their power to see that they lose the case. Now, that's not justice. It's not what our Constitution stands for, nor what the accused is guaranteed under the laws of this land. In the West, they make their own laws, and always have.
Kate Wilhelm likes to write about legal matters; she did write a science fiction classic, WHERE LATE THE STREET BIRDS SANG, and THE GOOD CHILDREN destined to be made into a movie. She is from Oregon and uses that background for the subjects she knows.
Excellent outing for Wilhelm's character, Barbara Holloway.........2001-12-06
"No Defense" brings out the best in Kate Wilhelm's style of courtroom drama. The reality of the criminal courtroom in her series is really not the time in court (punctuated by unexpected admissions of guilt or anguish by witnesses or defendants, that you see in TV courtrooms) but the planning, strategy and negotiation that goes on before the trial starts, during the trial, in and around the offices of the defense and the prosecutor, and the location where the defendant is held until the trial is concluded.
Without the hystrionics, Wilhelm's courtroom may be a little too colorless for both, as well might her main character, Barbara,
who has no quirky behaviors or hidden secrets. Barbara's main relationship in life is with her attorney father - another reason why the series may be too boring for those who like the addition of sex and violence.
Nevertheless, the straightforward telling of a murder case that may have been a suicide was difficult for me to put down, and the final actions and reactions that reveal the murderer, and a lot of the town secrets, kept me guessing up to the final pages.
Throw in some terrific writing about scenic Oregon (most of us will learn for the first time about the desert in the eastern part of the state), and a bit of comedy connected with Frank Holloway's budding career as a writer, and you get a terrific tale that you will really enjoy.
A talented, award-winning novelist who can outcraft the "attorneys who are also novelists", Wilhelm will quickly become a favorite for you.
A fun, engrossing read.......2001-03-03
If you like mysteries, then you should read about Barbara Holloway, super sleuth/lawyer who rescues another victim of shady proceedings. This one barely had any defense when Barbara is called upon to defend the wife of a man who was killed in an accident. Only, after an investigation, the man was discovered to be murdered and the spotlight of suspicion turns upon his wife. Barbara has to find evidence that the wife didn't do it ~~ and she takes you along on a journey of investigating what really happened that night on the mountaintop!!
Once again, Kate Wilhelm takes you along for a ride. She draws you into the story ~~ just look at the first sentence in the book ... "The rising sun is veiled with desert haze, rose-red streaks extending north and south against a royal blue that only gradually turns maeve." And there you go ... hooked into the story with its backdrop against the desert and the mountains.
Wilhem is a master writer ~~ everyone should try reading one of her Holloway books and once they do, they're fans for life. Wilhelm doesn't disappoint her readers!!
Great legal suspense.......2001-01-22
Combine a suicide which might be a murder, a young widow with a big insurance payoff, an old unsolved disappearance/murder, a rich family which controls the county, and a federal judge with secrets and you have the ingredients for a first-rate mystery. As this story unfolds and Barbara Holloway, a no-nonsense lawyer, comes onboard to protect the interests of the widow, we know that something dark happened and we know that more than one person is hiding knowledge of just what happened. Not until near the end, however, does the author unveil the explosive secrets. This novel will grab your attention from the beginning and the suspense will sustain you 'til the denouement. It is, in a word, excellent.
Reviewed by Ann L. Bruns for Bookreporter.com.......2000-03-28
REVIEW There are times when I'm just plain tired of high powered legal thrillers. You know the type. The featured attorney is either the most eligible bachelor in town or the most drop-dead gorgeous female to ever grace a courtroom. And while defending their clients, they become embroiled in a life-or-death struggle with the real villain of the piece --- barely escaping bullets, bombs, and the like. Sound familiar?
In NO DEFENSE Kate Wilhelm has recaptured the good old-fashioned courtroom drama, the Perry Mason style of suspense, and done it admirably. No fireworks, no superhero stunts, no murderers lurking in dark hallways; just tough investigating, smart deducing and a few courtroom theatrics to heighten the anticipation. It works.
Wilhelm's featured character, Barbara Holloway, is a defense attorney with a passion for seemingly hopeless cases. When her father Frank is approached by a young woman with a mysterious request for legal advice, he enlists Barbara's help to unravel a peculiar puzzle. Lara Jessup's husband has died under mysterious circumstances. Was it suicide or murder? What happened to the documents he was supposedly taking to Harris McReady that night, and what was in them? And what does a large box of papers --- years worth of investigation into this powerful man, Judge McReady, --- have to do with Vinny Jessup's death and the disappearance of Vinny's son years ago?
Even though the Holloways suspect McReady is involved, as well as his powerful in-laws, Thomas and Anna Lynch (who are backing McReady for a Supreme Court judgeship), they soon find that their client was seen at the site of the murder and is the one being charged. It doesn't help that the Jessup's were a May-December marriage and there's a large insurance policy involved. With no apparent defense, Barbara and her team must research the perplexing mound of paperwork to discover why the judge, his wife Babe, and his father-in-law are all so anxious to find the originals of those missing documents and railroad Lara into a plea bargain.
Not only is the blow by blow courtroom narrative fascinating, but the characters that Wilhelm has fashioned are interesting people that add further dimension to the storyline itself. Take Manny Truewater, for instance. A Native American lawyer who shared a practice with Vinny, he knows the history behind the Jessups, the Lynchs and McReady. He moves in and out of scenes, dropping tantalizing details and throwing up a few roadblocks here and there to antagonize the opposition. He's a man with more insight than others realize and who knows far more than he's telling.
Barbara's father is someone you'd love to know; someone you'd fondly describe as "a character." He's the anchor that keeps Barbara from drifting into trouble, the calming influence when the case appears lost, and the inveterate social butterfly who can get literally anyone to tell him anything. Toss in a wiseacre investigator named Bailey, who hates working in the desert heat and never met a meal he didn't like, and you've got a mix of people ripe with personality to add a bit of fun to the lawyerly proceedings.
NO DEFENSE may be a little too laid-back for those who demand larger-than-life heroes, psychotics running amuck, and a body count that could populate Toledo. But then again, if you enjoy grappling with whodunnits that will keep you riveted, Kate Wilhelm is just the ticket.

Stomp your own snakes!.......2005-07-01
I read this book back in 1992 and met Paxton Quigley in Phoenix shortly afterwards. I obtained several autographed copies and gave them to my sisters and sisters-in-law. I collect books on "defense for women" and most of them are trash. It's a shame, too. I started collecting books on defensive techniques for women because if they worked for the physically and mentally soft, it would be even more effective for those who were physically and mentally conditioned to deal with the violent, ugly, and brutal parts of "civilization." Paxton Quigley's advice on bottom-line security is still first rate.
Women have to learn to stomp their own snakes for two reasons: criminals select helpless targets as victims; all too often, the woman's "significant other" turns out to be an abusive brute.
Even if you do not want anything to do with guns, taking a gun safety course and learning their limitations will still give you the information to make yourself safer. Someone waving a pistol at you from 100 feet away is usually not going to be able to hit you except by accident--so run to a place of safety! On the other hand, if you're confronted at five feet, you need to pretend to cooperate until you have an opportunity to get away.
Quigley evaluates defensive tools available in 1990 and makes recommendations based upon her experience. I am a large man (6' 3") and Paxton Quigley had to stand on an ammo crate in order to see over the sales counter and sign her books. In her book, she writes of carrying a whippy little steak knife for self protection. Quigley's idea of self defense is avoiding injury--certainly a worthy goal. I hang out with America's warriors and their idea of self-defense is hurting the other guy worse. Quigley achieves her goal, avoiding injury, by being alert to danger. She uses her handgun as credible deterrance--I have no doubt that she can shut down a hostile male attacker. Quigley projects this attitude without coming off as a phoney or hard-case. Her book, "Armed and Female," tells you how to do the same.

Inspiring stories of everyday women defending themselves!.......1998-07-25
This book is full of powerful true-life stories of normal, everyday women in a wide range of situations, defending themselves both verbally and physically. Every woman should read this book! It counteracts the messages we've all learned about how women are supposedly helpless. I teach women's self-defense and recommend this book to all of my students. I am very disappointed it is out of print and can only be found used!
Great collection of self defense success stories.......1998-05-17
This is a fantastic collection of stories by women who have successfully defended themselves. Stories cover a variety of different situations (from verbal harassment to very serious physical assault) and methods of self defense (mental, emotional, verbal, physical). As a self defense instructor, the material in this book is invaluable in my classes. My only complaint is that it focuses mainly on stranger assault - I wish there were more stories about women defending themselves from acqaintances.
