Book Description
We just asked the movie stars how they did it. What did they use? How often? Where did they get it? How can we do it, too? And they told us. We couldn't believe it either.
Kym Douglas, host of the upcoming Lifetime makeover show Queen and the image consultant on The View, and celebrity journalist Cindy Pearlman had always wanted to know how the A-list stars looked so, well, A-list. It turns out that even the most carefully guarded stars were more than happy to dish. Collected here, in their own words, celebrities and their beauty gurus reveal their tricks of the trade.
How do they reduce puffiness, lose five pounds in a week, put shine in their hair, buff their skin, and vacuum their pores without spending a fortune? Find out from Jennifer Aniston, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Lindsay Lohan, Beyoncé Knowles, Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Hurley, Charlize Theron, and many, many more!
Kym Douglas is the creator and host of the upcoming Lifetime Television makeover show, Queen, airing in October and the image consultant on The View. She appears regularly on Soap Talk, Good Day Live, Before & After'noon, and Your Weekend with Jim Brickman.

The Black Book of Hollywood Beauty Secrets.......2007-09-16
Not only was the book helpful with the beauty secrets, but I loved the sense of humour. I look forward to the next book by these authors.
Good for newbies to makeup/skincare/haircare.......2007-07-30
If you've ever read any beauty/fashion magazines on any type of a regular basis, spoken in friend circles about beauty tricks, or are over 13 and have been wearing makeup for a few years, etc. then you already know all of this. Puffy eyes: cucumber or potato slices, chilled spoons, tea bags Zits: dab of toothpaste or tea tree oil Shiny, build-up free hair: apple cider vinegar rinse
Unless you're a newbie to the beauty world or like the 40-something year old woman I met that had no idea that clear mascara can be used to groom brows and that the tanning beds were making her liver spots worse, then save your money.
no new information in my opinion.......2007-07-28
I thought this book would be entertaining with a lot of tips and tricks for making beauty fun and easy. I love makeup and going on the occassional splurge at Sephora. But I can also be happy wandering the makeup/skin care aisles of Target.
When this book is not spitting out designer labels left and right, they really don't have super secrets. Most is stuff you can find online about home treatments that you can mix together yourself. It also asked a lot of "professionals" and beauty gurus their "must haves" and what would they buy if they ONLY had 100 dollars. These people are spoiled brats in my opinion. 100 bucks could buy a heck of a lot of beauty stuff. One woman's answer when asked what she would do if she only had the 100 dollars was "first, I would cry...". This really just put the stamp of stupidity on this book. Don't waste your money!
very informative.......2007-07-08
very interesteing book, so many secrets and the ones i tried do really work-highly recommend!
Big on hype, long on snark, short on quality...save your $$.......2007-06-21
I made the mistake of actually purchasing this book. I would've taken it back if I hadn't already thrown away the receipt, that is how BAD this book is! True beauty has nothing to do with making uncharitable and jealous comments, and it seems like every sentence in this book is prefaced with "MEOW!" I do not like this current trend toward Us Magazine style cattiness and rudeness in Hollywood gossip circles, and it seems to have permeated this book something fierce. What good is attaining outer beauty if the seemingly beautiful person is unattractively rude and has caustic, mean-spirited and sarcastic stuff constantly running out of her mouth?
Another thing I found offensive about this book? The hypocrisy of one of the authors. If you look at the picture in the back of the book, you'll notice that Cindy Pearlman, is considerably fat...in fact, you could say she is OBESE...yet throughout the book she and her "new best friend" aka co-writer Kym Douglas make all sorts of hurtful cracks about large sized women. What's with all the self loathing Cindy? Still trying to fit in with the 'preps' 20 or more years after graduating high school? Still getting ready for that prom you apparently never attended? Sad...and pathetic. Get over it already.
As for the so-called beauty "secrets", do these authors think we were born yesterday? I don't buy most of that mess in this book for a New York minute! Do you honestly expect us to believe those actresses are too cheap to buy real beauty products? Please. Plus I am NOT interested in learning any of beauty secrets who women who are in the sex industry, either. Why are they glorifying strippers and pole dancers in this book? Disgusting.
As for their assessment that men are only interested in women who look like those on the "A" list...this is simply not so. How do I know? Well, I've been to Hollywood, Beverly Hills AND Malibu, so I can tell you by personal experience the STRAIGHT men there appreciate all sorts of beauty in women...and they are equally as likely to flirt with a woman with meat on her bones as he is the tall blonde size "0" waifs running around with scary Botox smiles! The true beauty "secret?" CONFIDENCE IN ONESELF...which doesn't cost one red cent!!!
Trust me, in the end, you're better off taking that money you would've spent on books of this ilk and putting it toward a fab vacation to California and really living it up, rather than living vicariously through this flimsy book with bogus beauty "secrets" you can find on any beauty website. I'm not even going to give this book to charity...it's just going directly into file 13.

Not Impressed.......2007-06-18
I expected a lot from this book. However, I was sorely disappointed. The author provides a lot of good tips, but I wished she had gone into greater depth. I felt as if she only scratched the surface, and that's why I am so disappointed.
Did Not Need To Put It In A Book .......2007-06-12
When you get down to it, I just wanted to know basically what I was doing wrong and tell me what I SHOULD be doing. Ms Howse could just have easily put her information in a phamplet or on her site and let us order the hair products.
I will absolutley use her suggestions and will try her products.
Handy.......2007-06-04
The information in the book was undoubtfully handy. I learned things that I never knew about hair and I was able to incorporate her tips into my own hair care regime.
My only disappointment however is that she seems pretty darn fixated with selling her hair products (even more-so in her website).
With a lot of research I had done on natural ingrdients (ingredients you may have in your house), I realised that I can use her tips without having to spend the costs on her products OR ANY brandname product. I even managed to improve the tips she gives (with research). Online research goes a long way. But I'm still glad that I bought the book. Before, I didn't have a stable hair regimin and I did things pretty randomly. Now I have system of washing, conditioning...etc.
My hair has never felt better. (not weighed down, bouncier, VERY moisterized)
Expert Advice on Black Hair Care.......2007-05-29
I am excited to own a copy of this book. Common sense hair tips can be obtained by reading it. I never realized the damage caused to black hair and scalp from extreme heat, relaxers, weaves, and braids if not properly cared for.
I am glad this book is out there. Worth the money paid for it.
excellent.......2007-05-16
The product was sent to me faster then the time given. The book is very helpfull and I have recommended it to many of my friends as well as how to purchase other items on Amazon. Thank you Amzon for being efficient and good communication.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description
Countless black women would rather attend church naked than hatless. For these women, a church hat, flamboyant as it may be, is no mere fashion accessory; it's a cherished African American custom, one observed with boundless passion by black women of various religious denominations. A woman's hat speaks long before its wearer utters a word. It's what Deirdre Guion calls "hattitude...there's a little more strut in your carriage when you wear a nice hat. There's something special about you." If a hat says a lot about a person, it says even more about a people-the customs they observe, the symbols they prize, and the fashions they fancy.
Photographer Michael Cunningham beautifully captures the self-expressions of women of all ages-from young glamorous women to serene but stylish grandmothers. Award-winning journalist Craig Marberry provides an intimate look at the women and their lives. Together they've captured a captivating custom, this wearing of church hats, a peculiar convergence of faith and fashion that keeps the Sabbath both holy and glamorous.

A Must Have..........2007-06-12
Orginally, I purchased this book as a gift and after browsing through it, I decided I had to have a copy of my very own. The photography in this book is excellent. The photographs are shot in black and white in order to focus on the church hats. The stories behind the hats are amazingly beautiful. I will never look at a black woman in a church hat the same ever again. I learned that each hat has a story that must be told.
Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church hats.......2006-11-07
I wear lots of hats and this book really helped me understand at lot about hats. Being raised in a household where my mom always wore a hat to church> I grew up and I do the same. This book lets me know that there is some more history to it.

Ladies and Their Hats.......2006-08-01
Coming from a hat wearing tradition, I fully appreciated "Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats". My hat was a pill box a la Jacqueline Kennedy which shows how old I am. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the photographs and the women's stories. Hat wearing is a fine tradition and very much a part of Black culture that Michael Cunningham has captured in all its glory.
Crowns truly deserves a Crown.......2006-04-01
We are performing the play Crowns here at the Unicorn Theatre here in Kansas City, MO as I write my review. It has been sold out every night and we had to add another week and it is sold out as well. I play the part of Mother Shaw. I have to say that before the play I was not one who wore hats but NOW!!!!!. The lines we say come directly from the book. This book is the best read I have come across in a long time. I had to order it here on Amazon because all the book stores in KC are sold out!! They love the play and they love the book. A book that all black women ( especially those of us who grew up in the church) can identify. We have all seen a Mother Shaw, Wanda, Jeanette and Mabel in the church wearing their hats. Regina Taylor really hit the nail on the head. This is one role that I can truly say I have enjoyed playing. God bless you Regina and keep them coming!
An excellent choice!.......2005-08-02
This book brings back memories of being a young girl and seeing the church ladies entering the church wearing those extraordinary hats. Being blond and fair didn't stop me from mingling among the congregation just to see the hats and hear the singing. The hats in this book are so familiar. The stories are new and give life to those hats. This book would make an excellent gift.

Customer Reviews:
It's a great book but..........2007-07-13
I found it to be very repetitive. Throughout the whole book, he just says wash your hair with the Nexxus products, and stay away from the no-lye perms and use a lye perm. But I have read over and over that lye perms can be just as damaging to the hair. So instead of using getting the lye perm, I got the phytospecific relaxer which has no-chemicals in it and my hair came out really straight and soft. But it's really expensive. The book did help me though, I was really lost with my hair, always wondering why it would grow but split making me cut it off. But I wanted more information on my hair, I want to know anything and everything about it so that it would be healthier, so I'm thinking about buying another book to go along with it. Buy the book if you want simple information on your hair, child's hair, coloring your hair, and how to put in a lye relaxer. But if you want something with more detail, buy something else.
Excellent.......2007-06-07
I think this is an awesome guide for anyone doing their own hair at home or update some of our cosmetologist skills.
I must sing the praises of Shamboosie!.......2007-01-05
I was just browsing the the book in the bookstore and a lady came up behind me and said this was a very good book. So I figured, what the hey, buy it. After reading it, I understand why my hair is getting drier and more unmanagable over time. I thought it was aging! I followed his instructions to the letter and exactly as he said-after the 4th treatment I had silky, bouncy, managable hair that I thought was gone forever. I have been converted. I am buying my best friend a copy for her birthday. Ladies of color, do yourselves a favor and read this book!
never arrive.......2006-11-10
I have ordered this item since Aug, now is Nov, but i still havent received it!
Best Hair Care Book (and Ive bought many).......2006-05-11
I bought this book two years ago and have been using the products recommended by Shamboosie for all of that time. Can I just say that if you read all of the other reviews and doubtfully pass this book over you are doing yourself a dis-service! I do not have a bad grade of hair but I was one of those folks who thought my hair had to be short to be cute. I would grow it out, lose control (as in breakage, ugly hair days, etc) and just cut it off again. I did the grow/cut cycle 5 times in 10 Years!!! Can I just say that these past 2 years have allowed me to receive compliments CONSTANTLY on my hair's health and overall look. I tell everyone that I am not sure if it is JUST the NEXXUS products but it sure could be!!! So much so, that I budget to buy these products! BUY THIS BOOK!

I'll tell you why black women are losing their hair!.......2007-09-26
Use of and improper use of chemical relaxers!! Improper diet!! Harsh hair dyes!! Greasing up the hair follicles so they can't breathe!!
Simple solution. Quit trying to be like white women and accept your god given curly, kinky, coily, nappy and all stages in between hair and learn to care for it. Learn to love it. Natural hair is beautiful, practical, versatile, and not at all hard to take care of. Black hair can grow down to your knees if you want it to, you just have to prevent it from breaking off. Moisturize it. Condition it. Stop using harsh shampoos. Oy!!
Exercise. Drink water...not koolaid. Increase your protein and veggie intake. Lose weight!! Take multi-vitamins. These things and more (not combing dry hair, using a boar's hair brush) contribute to growing healthy long hair. Quit being mean to your nappy headed sisters by telling them their hair is "bad". Give up those slave terminologies and psychological traps. Good lord, is it no wonder black women are losing their hair with all this unnecessary stress they put on it??
Until you free your minds, sisters, you and your hair will forever remain imprisoned in a vicious cycle of destruction; and you will not only continue to lose your hair, your minds and souls will follow.
So, So..........2007-04-16
This book had some good information, but not enough on promoting hair growth. It was really a waste of money.
My Hair Has Been Rescued!.......2006-07-13
I have read many hair care books, and this by far is the "ultimate" in hair care and maintenance guides. I have implemented many of Mr. Fletcher's suggestions into my daily hair care routine, and have experienced tremendous results. My hair has gotten longer, stronger, and more lustrous. My only regret is that I did not discover this book sooner. Thank you, Mr. Fletcher!
What a waste.......2004-10-17
I bought this book from the man himself. Not only is he arrogant, but his book made proposterous suggestions (standing on ones head to grow hair) and not enough information about how to grow hair. Save your money and buy No Lye: The African American Woman's Guide To Natural Hair Care by Tulani Kinard instead.

Book Description
Nancy MacDonell Smith explores the origins, meaning, and remarkable staying power of the ten staples of feminine fashion:
* the little black dress
* the white shirt
* the cashmere sweater
* blue jeans
* the suit
* high heels
* pearls
* lipstick
* sneakers
* the trench coat
Tracing the evolution of each item from inception to icon status, she reveals the history and social significance of each, from the black dress's associations with danger and death to the status implications of the classic white shirt. Incorporating sources from history, literature, magazines, and cinema, as well as her own witty anecdotes, Smith has created an engaging, informative guide to modern style.

Enjoyable, informative and surprising.......2005-10-26
While I would still qualify this as "light" reading, it's an intelligent read about a subject some have written off as too inconsequential and that others have elevated to deadly seriousness. This book strikes a nice balance, coming from the point of view that our clothing says a lot about us, whether we are conscious of it or not.
While I appreciated the author's writing style and observations (I burst out laughing when she described wannabe hip hop fans in pursuit of the perfect sneaker as foot fetishists), she didn't go out of her way to be too clever or witty (although she did quote quite a few people who arguably do, especially the designer- Manolo Blahnik?- who declares that it's all about extremities and the rest of the body is boring. Okay...) In the ten main chapters, the book provides a history of the evolution and a commentary on the social significance of each of the classic ten style items, almost all of which are interspersed with personalities who embodied the spirit of the item. (It should be noted that Audrey Hepburn and Coco Chanel made an appearance in almost every chapter. Where would modern fashion be without them?)
Some points that will stay with me: the seventies/early eighties trend towards natural and the cosmetics executive who bragged about her skill applying twelve different products to achieve the natural look; the evolution of the men's suit to embody the Greek (Greco-Roman) ideal of the perfect body; the foot fetishisms that seem to inform so many footwear designs (and a deplorable ad by Apostrophe involving fetishism and murder- remind me not to buy any of their shoes!).
While I couldn't argue with her choices, I found it odd that she did not include black boots or the perfect scarf in her list. That may have pushed her over the all-important number ten, but since she sort of cheated in her discussion of the white shirt (which refers to both the button down version and the T-shirt), I think she should have found a way. But that's a very minor complaint.
If you're interested in fashion history and modern dress, this will be an enjoyable read.
Lots of fun and familiar.......2004-02-03
It's hard to find good, lively fashion writing that's geared to the consumer -- not just to the elite insiders working in the fashion industry. This book fills a need for the everyday fashionista who loves to read intelligent copy about clothes, especially the classics already in her closet. The author knows her subject and her affection is contagious.
There's nothing much new here, but still, it's loads of fun to rehash. Reading these essays, I had a vague sense that I'd read some of the material in several other places by several other authors -- such is the familiarity of the Little Black Dress, for example. (Everyone wants to own the LBD and every fashion writer in America has written about it. Ditto the trench coat.)
But don't let that spoil the fun and romance of this delightfully fun read! It's a great little tribute to the classics, and deserves a place on your nightstand.

If there's one women's fashion essential, it's the little black dress. Amy Edelman's homage to this chic wardrobe workhorse is a pleasure. She traces its popular acceptance to a 1926 Coco Chanel drawing that graced the pages of Vogue. The timing was no accident--women were stepping out in the world, shoving fussy, restrictive wear to the backs of their closets. The role of color is also examined: Black is the color of nuns' habits, of witches' wear, of clothes worn during periods of mourning. But it's also the color of allure, well represented by a bevy of beauties, from cartoon jazz baby Betty Boop to a lithe, black-sheathed Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly. ("It was a warm evening, nearly summer, and she wore a slim cool black dress, black sandals, a pearl choker....") The little black dress is lovingly photographed and illustrated in this work. Plain and not-so-simple, The Little Black Dress is a delight.

love it!.......2007-06-20
Absolutely fabulous, I wish there were books like this out there.
not so beautylicious..........2007-03-30
So, I bought this book thinking that it would have a lot more info than it actually had. I was disapointed. I had a friend who had the Modern Girls Guide...so I figured I would by the BEAUTYLICIOUS version...I think I'm gonna go ahead and purchase the Modern Girls Guide...
why is this just the "black girl's guide"?.......2006-11-04
If this was called "the white girl's guide to the fabulous life" it would be called a racist piece of trash. Why does the title of this book say its "the black girl's guide"? I found it had great tips for everyone, but I am disappointed in the phrasing of this title. It excludes.
I'm objecting to the title here. Not the book. The book had great tips for everyone. But its a shame that the title has to be discriminatory.
Loved It!!.......2006-06-13
I am going to order a copy of this for my sister and my friends. It is something every african american female 21-35yrs old should have in their collection. It had some great tips on beauty, health and finances. It also has some great tips on how to get started on appreciating yourself and loving yourself. Take time to remember you and to focus on you. It was just what I needed to get out of the "I don't care I am not going to worry about how I look anymore rut". I keep it in my totebag and pull it out to refer to it periodically. It is chic just to be seen reading it!
Just the right timing .......2006-02-06
I loved this book because it showed me that with the right attitude I "a plain jane from way back" can be a diva too. It also showed me that there was no difference between me and Lena Horne except our attitude about ourselves. It was great and I highly recommend it to any woman not just black who want to take on the world.

Great Help for Transracial Adoptive Moms.......2007-09-09
As a white Mom with an A-A daughter, I have a lot to learn about caring for her dry, kinky hair. I thought this book had some great tips about general hair care as well as styling. There are line-drawing illustrations to accompany photographs of the completed hairstyle. Most of all, I liked the supportive attitude of the author and the short essays from other Primary Care Givers (Black, White, and Biracial) about styling their daughter's hair. My daughter is 2, so many of the styles are not appropriate for her yet, but I have been able to incorporate aspects of the more complicated styles into her more simple daily 'do. You can read a more complete review and learn more about my adoption experience at my blog [...]
Horrible.......2007-08-29
Words can not describe how worthless this book is. I ordered this book from Barnes and Nobles yesterday (8/28/2007). When I got home and flipped through the pages, I wanted my money back. I really thought this was going to be a good book. I read all the reviews on amazon before I decided to purchase. I thought this book was going to have information on how to properly care for natural hair and maybe list some worth wild hairstyles that I could use on my hair. I did not find any useful information what so ever. Any information the book gave was to brief. The pictures and style demonstrations were not even that good. This book is not worth paying $13.95. I have found more information from Nappturality and by reading Cathy Howse's Ultra Black Hair Growth book. I would adivse anyone not to buy this book.
Great Hair Book!.......2007-08-04
I really like this book because the author made it easy to understand page by page of how to make beautiful hairstyles for my both of my daughters. They have even re-created some of the hairstyles themselves if I'm not around. I have enjoyed this book soo much, that I bought another one for my best friend for her young daughter as well. The only thing missing was the color pages. But this book is for thoses Mothers out there who want their Daughter and Son to look there best without a lot of time and cost!
Not all Good..........2006-08-02
The pictures in this book are not very helpful when trying to recreate the styles. I purchased this book in order to gain ideas for hairstyles for my little ones. This book does contain pics of different styles, but it will only show the hairstyle from one angle. It may show a picture from either the front, side or back, but not from all three angles. If you just want to read a few stories about kids experiences with their hair, then purchase this book. If you are looking for pictures of hairstyles, consider yourself warned.
It's All Good Hair.......2006-05-21
When my daughter was born, I had to send my sister down to the hospital store to buy an adult comb because none of those cute little baby combs would work. Being Black, I thought I knew all there was about caring for black hair. But my hair is fine and medium length and here I was with a baby with thick, coarse wavy hair. My daughter has long, beautiful healthy hair. A lot of girlfriends as well as strangers ask what do I use on her hair and how do I care for it. I ran across this book in a thrift store and purchased it for $1. I like this book because it does a good job of telling you how to take care of your child's hair from birth and to recognize that your child's hair might be different from yours. Yeah, the illustrations could be better, but it's a good place to start if you want to get up to speed with caring for an African American child's hair. I often give this book as a gift at baby showers accompanied by Jane Carter Solution's hair care products, especially nourish & shine--it's a must have!
