Required Reading.......2007-05-28
I read Dollmaker over twenty years ago and have never forgotten its message. I feel all women should be required to read this important story. It shows that the strength, courage and faith that women use daily in everyday life is taken for granted by some but cherished and passed on by others. This book makes you grow in ways that are not easy to describe.
Just plain depressing!.......2006-12-29
If you want to walk away from a book feeling hopeless and sad, by all means, read this book! You just keep waiting for the book to make a turn around, but the character's life just becomes worse and worse! And the book is so long and terribly detailed! The only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 is because I do believe the author accurately portrayed the harshness of life for a family in innercity Detroit during World War II. However, I would not recommend this book to anyone!
American Tragedy.......2006-05-07
Harriette Arnow, in The Dollmaker, not only chronicles the collapse of the ages-old rural universe of Appalachia and the subsequent historic wave of migration north to the Northern States during WW II, she gives us a giant of a character in Gertie Nevels. Tall as a man, strong as a man, staunchly independent without even knowing it, Gertie nevertheless kowtows to her overbearing mother, then to her husband's wishes to give up her dreams and everything that has ever had meaning in her life. Highly symbolic, each character is nonetheless surging with blood and gristle and clashing with a society that pits human against human, culture against culture, for profit.
Arnow, a brilliant novelist and National Book Award winner in 1955, has largely been relegated to "regional" literature and somewhat forgot in recent times. Her first novel, Mountain Path, captured a kind of human being we see little of today in America. Both fierce and fearful, generous to a fault but full of grudges and a firm believer of "an eye for an eye", they are of a time and place that is now almost lined-out with Interstates.
In The Dollmaker, Arnow takes what she so masterfully sculpted in her early fiction and brings it into the light of the world. The rough and raw characters of Mountain Path are now thrown into the mix of the new Detroit slums. Bigoted Northerners, foreign-speaking European immigrants, and the reviled hillbillies of Kentucky, Tennessee and beyond come together in an international community amidst the life-and-death early days of unions and union busters.
The Dollmaker is long and by the end I was wrung out. At times I found myself wanting to shake Gertie, at others, to take her in my arms and protect her. In the end she becomes so tragic a being that I was stunned. It is said that Arnow was influenced by Emile Zola's novel Germinal. The similarities are all there, but their messages, and certainly their conclusions, are significantly different.
"Don't you know there's a war...?".......2005-12-10
Gertie Nevels is a woman meant to live out her days on the land in Kentucky, all her dreams for her children tied up in the predictability of hard work, where abject poverty is ameliorated by fresh vegetables and harvested crops, self-sufficiency the rule the family lives by. But industrialization has hit the country, jobs scarce, the cities calling workers with the promise of a weekly paycheck, food on the table and a company roof over their heads. For men like Clovis Nevels, this opportunity is all that is left in a country at war, the factories emitting a siren call to prosperity. Were it not for her husband, Gertie would never leave her home, but she is a humble woman, guided by her Bible and righteousness to keep the family together. Against her children's complaints, Gertie gives up her dream for a home of her own and moves her brood to wartime Detroit.
The cacophony and dirt of the city are a terrible shock to Gertie and her children, but the living conditions are outrageous to those used to country life, row houses connected wall to wall, the loud voices of neighbors booming in argument, contentious men needing sleep before the next shift, wives unhappy with their husband's drunkenness, hordes of children gathering to play in the dusty courtyard, every semblance of the country removed in this smoke-filled, filthy place, where shift change is announced by the bleat of a horn and the wail of the train wakes the night. Her children settled in school, Gertie makes her peace with this new environment, keeping the younger ones close by, comforted by the wood carving she does to calm her hands and pass the time.
The Dollmaker is a powerful social indictment of the consequences of industrialization, spoken in the idiomatic dialect of an uneducated country woman faced with the disintegration of all that she holds dear. The formidable Gertie will know the loss of her husband's pride and self-respect, the creeping fear of joblessness, the private nightmare of assimilation into an indifferent city and the small comfort of the wood she works with her hands. Eventually, even comfort will be forfeit, given a loss that brings Gertie to her knees, prayers scant comfort in her extremity. As multifaceted as the figures she carves, Gertie Nevels is the backbone of her family, and a source of strength to her friends, driven to survive this new, soulless world. Luan Gaines/ 2005.
The only book of it's kind I've ever read.......2005-09-10
Yes, I have heard it being compared to "Grapes of Wrath". It certainly is on the same level of craftsmanship and insight. However, I think the topic is DIFFERENT. It's the first book in my reading experience that approaches the topic of consumerism and living in disposable world. It's not about men (and women) overcoming financial, social and emotional difficulties. It's the same men (and women) creating their own hell. Mostly throuh inaction. I had mixed feelings about the protagonist. As much sympathy I had for her, I was also angry at her willingly (or rather without resistance) being lead to the "slaughter", as a cow. One may try to make this book into another feminist novel. Someone else may discribe it as a war novel. I disagree.

An A++++++++ Thriller!!!!!.......2007-04-28
All, This is an outstanding Thriller. I actually listened the the audio which was read by Christian Rummel. He did a very good job bringing out each of the characters, very easy to understand each of his voices. If you are looking for real suspense, go for this book. I do hope there is a sequel to this book, some of the characters have some real issues to work out. Very good ending but makes you think a lot about what could happen next. Go ahead, read it or listen to it, you'll be spellbound!!
Atmospheric and Creepy--LOVED IT!!.......2007-04-27
I was not familiar with the writing of this author but became aware of her on MySpace. Once I ordered the book, I couldn't wait to read it and I wasn't disappointed. The setting of Louisiana was perfect for this book and the author savored every last detail for the reader. Very atmospheric descriptions with all the senses of the reader put to the test. The characters were vivid and compelling, especially as they dealt with something as tragic as the unresolved kidnapping of a child. The book is a quick read and enthralling. I couldn't put it down. I would recommend it highly. A must read. I'm eagerly awaiting the author's next thriller.
More like 4 1/2 stars...........2007-04-25
You'll never look at dolls in quite the same way again after reading THE DOLLMAKER!
Seven years ago, Ruby was kidnapped, leaving behind the shattered marriage of her parents, Claire Doucett and Dave Creasy. Both Claire and Dave have struggled to pick up the pieces of their own lives, but now the past is pulling them back together. The appearance of a portrait doll with the exact likeness of Ruby may be a clue to what happened to Ruby, if only anyone is willing to believe Claire. Will Dave help Claire discover what really happened to Ruby or will the secrets of the past destroy them all?
THE DOLLMAKER is perhaps the creepiest book I've read in a long time! Amanda Stevens does a superb job at creating an eerie atmosphere that doesn't rely on gore or gratuitous violence. Instead, the tension is carefully built up with some truly horrifying twists to keep readers on their toes. While the reader will likely deduce aspects of the ending, there are some wickedly clever surprises in store that make this an absolutely phenomenal thriller.
Claire and Dave are not the usual sort of heroes for a thriller. Both are tortured by their past choices. Claire is in the midst of her second divorce and still sees Ruby everywhere she turns, while Dave struggles one day at a time to defeat the urge to pick up the bottle. Their private battles make THE DOLLMAKER a stronger novel as Claire and Dave seek their own sort of redemption after the loss of both Ruby and their marriage.
THE DOLLMAKER is an edgier story than many may expect as the author strives hard to remain true to the story and the characters. Those looking for the typical romantic suspense thriller will probably be a bit shocked by this story as Amanda Stevens definitely steps outside the box with this one. THE DOLLMAKER certainly has me eyeing dolls in an entirely different light! Fantastic job, Ms. Stevens!

Reviewed by Olivera Baumgartner-Jackson for Reader Views (3/07)
You can bet that a book which includes references to my favorite city, New Orleans; my favorite flowers, orchids; and my favorite collectibles, dolls; will pique my interests and I will expect a lot from it. More often than not such a variety of subjects in one book would end in a nearly disastrous hodge-podge and I'll be hard pressed to even finish it.
Amanda Stevens' "The Dollmaker" was not one of those. I picked it up in the early afternoon and immediately got totally engrossed in the creepy world she so masterfully describes. The dinner did not get cooked that night and I finally got to bed around three a.m. Needless to say I slept with my nightlight on.
What makes Ms. Stevens' book so creepy is that it is so utterly believable. Her descriptions of the bayou country as well as of the wickedly beautiful city of New Orleans are among the best I've ever read. Take a look at this:
"Twilight always fell anxiously over the Big Easy, especially when it rained. That's when the ghosts came out. A wisp of steam rising from the wet pavement. The murmur of voices from a hidden courtyard. Something dark and stealthy moving in the shadows, and suddenly you were reminded of a past that would not stay buried. New Orleans was like that. A city of memories, Dave Creasy always called it. A city of secrets and whispers and the kind of regret that could eat a man up inside. Like the wrong woman, she'd get in a man's blood, destroy his soul, make him feel alive and dead at the same time. And on a hot, rainy night - when the ghosts came out - it could be the loneliest place on earth."
Corrupt cops, talented artists, con men, drunkards, beautiful Creoles, desperate mothers, bayou dwellers, exotic dancers, abused children, abducted children... The characters in the book are just like New Orleans - very believable and never quite what they seem at the first glance. They are believable and convincing.
The story is gripping and once you get into it, you will be very hard pressed to put the book down. Ms. Stevens writing keeps pulling you in. The reader wants to find out more; not just more of the story, but more of the motivation behind the acts committed in it.
Claire Doucett's child vanished seven years ago without a trace. Shopping in the French Quarter one day she sees this incredibly lifelike doll that looks just like her daughter. Before she could find out more about it, the doll disappears. Then the shop owner ends up murdered. Her ex-husband might be the only person who could help her with her quest. Will he help? Could he help?
This was one of the most mesmerizing, chilling thrillers I've read in a long time and I would highly recommend "The Dollmaker" to anybody who enjoys a nerve-racking, hair-raising book.
Compelling characters, terrific story.......2007-04-18
Amanda Stevens' THE DOLLMAKER had everything I was in the mood for: creepy storyline, flawed-but-compelling characters I couldn't help but root for, and New Orleans and the surrounding area as its steamy, lush, and eerie best. Well-written and hard to put down, the suspense had me quickly turning pages and the mystery had some great twists.
Very highly recommended (but read it with the lights turned up!)

THE MERCEDES OF DOLLS.......2001-08-17
Born in 1895 in the Williamsburg area of Brooklyn, Madame Beatrice Alexander was the daughter of Russian immigrants who rose to become America's premier doll maker. As a child she was known as Bertha, but soon took what she considered to be a more socially acceptable name - Beatrice. This name change was but a harbinger of her determination to excel, to rise above what she considered to be humble surroundings.
Her story is well documented and lavishly illustrated in this keepsake volume. Included are numerous full-color photos of the famous Alexander dolls.
Early on Madame Alexander adored her step-father, Maurice, emulating his love of doll making and doll repairing. He is responsible for this country's first doll hospital located on the Lower East side of New York City. The family lived above this business.
With the outbreak of World War I and America's ban on German goods, including the dolls which were the family's best sales items, it seemed their business was doomed. But Beatrice and her sisters would not accept this. They put their heads together to try to determine how to make dolls without porcelain or kilns. The answer was, of course, cloth toys. Their first success was a Red Cross Nurse doll. Beatrice was the creative member of this team, coming up with ideas and issuing instructions on making her concepts a reality.
Building upon their success the Alexander Doll company moved to a large space in the late 1920s. It was not long before their efforts were rewarded with an order from FAO Schwarz.
The Alexander Alice In Wonderland doll debuted in 1930. Today, in an updated incarnation, Alice is still one of their most popular items. There were soon Scarlet O'Hara dolls, bride dolls, Queen Elizabeth II dolls, Eloise dolls, and more.
Today, the original issues of many dolls are prized items in collections throughout the world.
"Alex" is among the latest creations - she's a very modern miss in an extravagant gold gown or capris and crop top. Her wardrobe is extensive as is her following. But, to many, a Madame Alexander doll is the Mercedes of toys.
BEAUTIFUL BOOK!.......2000-02-27
BEAUTIFUL BOOK! WONDERFUL PICTURES! IT WAS GREAT HOW MANY SCARLETT O'HARA DOLLS THERE WERE! BUT THIS BOOK COSTS TOO MUCH, IT SHOULD COME IN PAPERBACK!
The historical perspective is a real plus........1999-10-18
The photos of Lia Sargent's dolls in this book are, indeed, beautiful, but the real draw is the way Ms. Finnegan, the author of the book, relates Alexander's life to what was going on in the world at the same time. Wonderful historical perspective, which is very unusual in a doll book!
Wonderful new book a MUST.......1999-10-16
Photos of many dolls in outfits never seen before. All in color. So you can identify your Alexander doll or hunt for that particular doll. This should make Madame Alexander dolls go up in value.
It's all so beautiful..........1999-09-26
This book is excellent! I found the life of Madame Alexander very interesting and read this book from cover to cover. I hated to put it down. If it were not for Madame Alexander we might not know Scarlett O'Hara or Barbie as we know them today. We have a lot to thank her for...you will be amazed! I also enjoyed the photographs of the dolls. Lia Sargent, the leading expert on pre 1965 Madame Alexander dolls did an outstanding job on this book also. The photographs and photo captions show Lia's work is perfection..something Madame Alexander would be proud of. This book will be loved by generations to come. Doll collector or not, this book will leave you saying "WOW"!!!!

Book Description
One of the most sought-after and respected doll artists working today, Helen Kish has created a rich repertoire of work ranging from charming limited-edition vinyl and porcelain dolls to evocative one-of-a-kind sculptures of clay, porcelain, bronze and stoneware. The first book ever published on this renowned artist documents in full color the extensive variety of her creations, from her earliest porcelains in the late 1970's to today's popular vinyl Riley and friends, including designs for manufacturers such as R. Dakin, The Franklin Mint and Pleasant Company.
Well-known contemporary-doll expert and author Louise Fecher has also written a biography of the charismatic artist, based on extensive interviews with Ms. Kish, her family, friends and colleagues, which is accompanied by never-before-seen personal photographs and examples of early artwork. An artist whose inner creative force led her to the dollmaker's life, Helen Kish has already left an unmistakable mark on the doll world - and there is still much more to come. This beautiful book is the definitive illustrated guide to her first three decades of work.

Helen Kish Review: Excellent story of a great doll artist!!!.......2007-01-18
This is a well rounded book of Helen's past, previous, and current dolls. She is a talented artist and has a very human side to her too! You can see her talent and creativity improve page by page. Her struggles getting noticed by worldwide and national doll and sculpture collectors increases gradually until she is so popular that she finally gets a book about her career as an artist.
So many of my dolls by Helen is in this book that I finally have a doll artist book that I will cherished because I can identify most on them in this book. I love the color photos of her work. I haven't read every page yet; but it seems to be accurate.
I've also had the advantage of meeting this wonderful artist in person several times at doll events and conventions and she is as wonderful as described in the book. Helen is very down to earth and her husband and daugther are her greatest supporters.
The most popular doll that has made Helen superpopular is little Riley!
That little 7 and 1/2 inch doll has so much attitude and has taken over the hearts of many doll collectors worldwide.
I also love Helen for adding many ethnic dolls to my collection and I cherished them very much. I have one of her ethnic black little boys and he is in this book on page 48 and his name is Bailey.
If you are a new or old collector of Helen Kish; you will love to have this book in your collection.
Enjoy, Lena
Kish book a helpful guide to collectors.......2006-11-12
This book is very helpful especially to the new collector of Helen Kish dolls. It provides interesting historical information about the artist, as well as lots of good photos and information about the dolls themselves. I refer to the book often to help identify Kish dolls made in the past. While I am glad to own the book and think it's a good value I would have liked more information on which dolls were made in the USA and which were handpainted by Kish herself. I rate the book FOUR stars.

The Robert Tonner Story: Dreams & Dolls.......2007-05-14
Great starting point for all levels of collectors.
An absolute must for any Tonner collector!.......2001-06-20
This is a beautifully written and researched book which I found both helpful and interesting. As a doll critic, I often find books about doll artists to be very self indulgent, but this book represented an honest and straight forward look at one of America's most incredible and talented doll manufacturers.
Tonner is an Inspiration!.......2001-05-21
As both a doll artist and a collector, I knew I had to have this book detailing the career of one of America's premiere doll artists in recent history. Robert Tonner has brought American doll artistry to new heights. There are so many wonderful illustrations of all of Tonner's dolls from the beginning of his career through 2000. Reading Tonner's story truly makes an artist believe that anything is possible - especially success - with a vision, talent and a lot of hard work! I am truly inspired having read this book and there are few people I would like to meet as much as I would love to meet Mr. Tonner.
A must for Tonner fans!.......2001-02-28
The author has included everything you could possibly want to know about Tonner and his work. Meticulously researched! The photos are fabulous, as well.
