Book Description
The four classic novels of Sherlock Holmes available in a new slipcased edition.
The publication of Leslie S. Klinger's brilliant new annotations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 56 short stories in 2004 created a Holmes sensation. Here, in this eagerly awaited third volume, Klinger reassembles Doyle's four seminal novels in their original order, with over 1,000 new notes, 350 illustrations and period photographs, and tantalizing new Sherlockian theories. Inside, readers will find:
A Study in Scarlet (1887)a tale of murder and revenge that tells of Holmes and Dr. Watson's first meeting;
The Sign of Four (1889)a cinematic tale of lost treasure;
The Hound of the Baskervilles (1901)hailed as the greatest mystery novel of all time; and
The Valley of Fear (1914)a fresh murder scene that leads Holmes to solve a long-forgotten mystery.
Whether as a stand-alone volume or as a companion to the boxed short stories, this classic work illuminates the timeless genius of Conan Doyle for an entirely new generation. Slipcased hardcover; two-color text; 300 illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting facts pertaining to the Sherlock Holmes novels.......2007-08-10
Having been brought up on the edge of Dartmoor,in Devonshire, SW England, where the Hounds of the Baskervilles story was located I found the annotations to that novel to be very interesting and, more importantly, factual even to the minor details that were mentioned.
I have no doubts whatsoever that the facts connected to the other three novels are just as accurate.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to any Sherlockian.
A BEAUTIFUL EDITION ~~~to place beside The Short Stories.......2007-07-16
This volume completes this edition of The Annotated Sherlock Holmes. What a beautiful set of books to ponder they are!
Myself, as with many of you, have "grown up" or "lived" with the great sleuth for many years, and it is, of course, for us, wonderful to open this beautiful volume, containing the four complete novels, lovingly annotated in the margins with tons of observations, thoughts, etc., on the great man and his times, and also, of course, on his great nemesis, Moriatry. It's just wonderful to sit comfortably and re-read, ponder, and think about this great character, his creator, and perhaps just smile upon doing so.
This great set of four of the greatest detective stories, along with the two volume companion with the 56 short stories, truly does belong on the shelves of anyone who likes both great writing, and also great detective stories, especially about the "Great" Holmes, whom you'll read over and over and over, enjoying them just as much the 12th time as the first!
Do yourself a Great Favor, and add this wonderful volume to your library...You Won't Be Sorry! ~operabruin
The four novels - in all their annotated glory!.......2007-06-27
This volume is a companion to the two-book set that covers the 56 short stories. Mr. Klinger has done an outstanding job of annotating and describing enough details in each novel to delight the casual reader or the devoted Holmes fan. Most Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts consider their annotated edition of the canon to be the centerpiece of their Holmes library. If you enjoy Sherlock Holmes, you will love this edition.
sherlock holmes novels.......2006-11-06
the stories are wonderful. the 100th anniversary editions are all charming. the re pore between Holmes and Watson is the definition of a true friend. the methodology of Holmes as alway is fascinating.
Great Book -- Get It.......2006-01-20
I first read the Sherlock Holmes stories in high school. Then in grad school (1967) came the two volume 'The Annotated Sherlock Holmes' by William S. Baring-Gould (sadly available now only used). Down through the years I guess I've re-read it every decade or so. Now Mr. Klinger has come out with 'The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes.' I didn't think that it was possible to improve on the Baring-Gould book, but Mr. Klinger has done so.
Besides Baring-Gould, there have been several other writers who have produced books on Holmes. Mr. Klinger seems to have researched them all and summarized their views, particularily where differences exist. For instance, the date that 'The Sign of the Four' took place is fairly important to Sherlockians. Mr. Klinger gives the dates calculated by sixteen different books.
Also added in this edition is a large number of drawings and photographs. Some of these come from the Strand Magazine and date back to the publication of the original story in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Some photographs come from the various movies including my favorites with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. Others come from book covers, movie posters.
Conclusion: Great Book. If you've done the Sherlock stories without an annotated version, you're in for a real treat. If you have an earlier annotated version, you need this one to complete the set.

5 Stars from a Calvinistic peerspective; two stars from a Biblical perspective........2007-01-19
Richard Booker in this book approaches the Bible from a Calvinistic, charismatic, and Premillennialist view point. This is seen when he states on p. 77, that a Christian has been given supernatural faith and that it is impossible for a person to fall away from the blood covenant. To support this he changes the author's meaning of Hebrews 6:4-6 quoted from the KJV, "...if they should fall away....". The Greek of the original language as translated by George Ricker Berry should read, "and who fell away (past tense)." Thus a distinct possibility of apostasy and not just a hypothetical thought which is impossible. Booker states that humans inherit Adam's sin (p. 92, 96), implying total depravity thus requiring God to operate directly on the hunman heart which becomes God's faith given to the sinner and not the faith of the believer.
Booker also states that the Jews will rebuild the literal Temple in the latter days just before the return of Jesus Christ (p. 64), whom he renames "Jeshua Hamashiah" (p. 84).
While there are some good thoughts in the book, one must remember that Booker's approach to the Bible is through the preconceived theology of Calvinism and despensationalism.
Bible College Must.......2007-01-04
Whether this is a required book for class or not this book explains the Blood Covenant in a very clear way.
A great must-have book!.......2006-03-27
I enjoyed this book, but before I give its praises, I must list a complaint first. Then, I will be able to focus on the positive aspects of this book.
Interspersed throughout the book is Richard Booker's own theology, particular unconditional eternal security i.e. "once saved, always saved." I disagree with that theology and I believe the Bible says so as well (Hebrews 10:26, several others). Even Jesus said that not everyone who calls him Lord will enter the kingdom of Heaven (Matthew 7:21-28). And there are many atheists in the world who were once former pastors and/or believers in God. According to the Bible, they will not be in Heaven. And since this is not a thick book (153 pages with six pages of helpful study questions), his viewpoint distracts from the message of the book.
And the message of the book is the constant theme of the blood covenant throughout the Bible, and how the Old Testament laid the foundation for the work that Jesus would complete in the New Testament. Booker gives some background information regarding covenants and identifying them in the Bible. Also, he explained the Tabernacle and priestly garments, and how Jesus fulfilled these. Great stuff! But I particurly LOVED the way he compared the 5 types of Levitical sacrifices to what Jesus did here on earth. WONDERFUL! (I always knew there had to be more than just killing animals). There's also a great section on Jesus in the Passover, which Booker explains even more in his book "Jesus in the Feasts of Israel" (another must-have book). This book gave me a greater understanding of the unifying structure of the Bible.
So if you agree with Booker's salvation theology, you will love this book (maybe even give it 5 out of 5 stars!). If not, then you will still need to get this book! It is a great way to understand how the Old Testament and New Testament go together, how Jesus fulfilled what was put down in the early feasts and sacrificial system. This book definitely belongs in your library!
If you want to know your covenant rights as a Christian...........2003-10-12
This is a must have book....A lot of us have heard the word covenant but we don't really understand want it really means to be in covenant with someone....
I took a class in our Ministry Training Institute that used this book as a text....and I have conscious ever since.....
I now know that I have covenant rights that I did not know of before and we only languish in our sins because we don't know our covenant rights in Christ.....
I would recommend this book highly if you want to know what a covenant truly is and we as Christian's fit into the Covenant picture....
Essential for Christians and curious non-Christians!!!.......2001-05-27
If I would have read this book 10 years ago, I believe I would have been a Christian for 10 more years. Booker is a fantastic teacher, analyzing events in the Old Covenant [Testament] and how they forshadow and point to the New Covenant. This book explains the steps in the covenant, which so many people do not know about. I myself was one of those people. The book takes you through the old priestly customs and rituals and how they point to our High Priest, Jesus. It also answers questions like "Why couldn't anyone touch Jesus while he was ascending?" and "Why was Jesus called the Son of Man?" This book is an absolute must-have! Essential! Keep it with your Bible!

Customer Reviews:
Yeah well, I was kind of dissapionted........2007-07-26
The music on the soundtrack is SOOO good. It is one of the best musicals I have ever heard really! But this music book is not so hot. It looks like someone just threw it together one day. The bass clef usaully just has one note on it for a whole measure! Some of the sections don't even sound like the real music. I was really sad because I like the music a lot. The songs are in the right key, but the accompanyment is not worth the money, unless you plan on adding in your own chords.
La...but PRAYER?!.......2005-05-21
I recently played the musical accomaniment for this entire show in a local production. I fell absolutely in love with the music and have been singing along with the original and encore recordings since...Sir Percy's "Prayer" is always going to be my favorite. One may imagine my disappointment when I discovered Prayer was missing from the book! And "Madame Guillotine" is practically the equivalent to Jekyll and Hyde's thunderous "Facade" and should have definitely been included. Even the relatively short reprises of "When I Look at You" and "Where's the Girl?" would have been awesome additions! I love Pimpernel too much to rate this book anything less than a '4' but I'm crossing my fingers to soon see a new edition that includes EVERYTHING from the show. Even the new material from the Encore version!!
A great modern musical gets a great Vocal Selection book.......2001-05-03
Complete with color photos and information from the Director, Lyricist and Composer of The Scarlet Pimpernel. This is one of the most informative vocal selection books I have bought in a while.
However the importance is in the songs that are featured. The only notable absence from the book is "Prayer". Yet all the great songs are there. From "Where's the Girl" to "Into the Fire" this book contains some great sings for different ranges. The piano accompaniment is quite good and does the job of accompanying the singer quite well. However it cannot compare to the original orchestral arrangement. The songs are almost exactly the same (singers interpretation causes differences) as those featured in The Original Broadway Recording of The Scarlet Pimpernel (Douglas Sills and Terrence Mann).
A great group of vocal arrangements are presented in this book and is highly recommended.
This is cool!.......1999-05-04
This score of the amazing musical was the BEST! I loved the arrangements and certain harmonizings that the arranger added. I have many of these "play" books, and this was one of the best! "The Scarlet Pimpernel" rocks!
Very Good Music.......1999-03-31
This was a really good book, the music is easy to play on the piano and it's just as pretty, if you like playing Broadway songs on an instrument, then you need this book!

A great classic-- but will a 17-year-old enjoy it?.......2006-11-02
I am an SAT tutor and believe that this is one of the most valuable books of its type a student preparing for the test can read. Unfortunately, in my experience, students also find this one of the least enjoyable books. Why is it valuable?
There are 2 major areas that a student must master to improve scores on the SAT Critical Reading section: (1) Vocabulary. (2) Understanding of complex sentence structures. This book provides a student with both. (1) SAT words are bolded, their definitions conveniently located on the facing page. (2) Sentence structure is complex and the book is written in "older" English which is partly a result of the era it was written in. The college board knows this and even suggests that students read books written before 1900. The complex sentences and old language may be reasons students do not put The Scarlet Letter on their Top 10 Favorite Books List, but it does not take away from the book's value-- if you can get your child to read it.

The Scarlet Letter.......2002-11-30
I downloaded this e-doc for my son, but I can't figure out how to give it to him. What is the name of the file, so I can copy it for him, so he can do his homework on his computer?
Assuming he can read it -- hopefully, tonight, before his test Monday -- it seems like a good product. We really need to find the name of the file, however.
Excellent aid for students of all abilities.......2001-10-23
Not to sound pretentious, but I had no trouble understanding "The Scarlet Letter," but I still found immense value in this companion text from Cliffs. It helped me by confirming what I myself had thought about the book and giving me interesting ideas for the term paper I was writing. Its usefulness comes from the ease of reading and the volume and quality of its contents. Of further value to the student is the rapidity with which the Cliffs Notes are read, making it indispensable for last minute paper-writing!
One closing comment: Cliffs Notes, however useful, are an aid for the reading of the full text and are no substitute for it.
Very Useful.......2001-08-30
Since the Bible is not taught in most schools, this Cliffsnotes is quite handy. There are so many biblical references and ideas driving the theme of Hawthorne's splendid novel, that without this guide, few teachers would understand the full context of Hawthorne's book.
Oh, students will find it helpful as well!
I fully recommend "Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter (Cliffs Notes)."

The heartstaking emotion.......2000-11-22
Once, we were impressed by the characters and conversations. But, you will soon find out thatis not important. I know it is easier for a Christian to feel how painstaking to cencede. We are living in a sinful world with our erring nature. Death should be our eternity. But, Mr. Dimmesdale strived to win and be respected. He knows what is wrong and make the very decision to admit his error. He is brave, with no fear of death or punishment. A love lasts for seven years. Connecting our innermost desire for love, it touch every reader. I cannot move, feeling sorry after reading the ending. I hope no one will miss it.
Saved my English Grade.......2000-06-13
This book made what was an incredably difficult book to follow easy to understand. I had to read the Scarlet Letter for my Honors english class. Highly Recomended.

Strong love...weak will..........2002-05-02
For those people who like Cliffs Notes explanations,
but find reading the original text difficult, this
excellent idea for a duo-volume by the same Cliffs
publishers is the ideal answer.
For this volume contains both the text, in fine
readable type, along with explanatory notes in the
wide margins to the right of the text. The volume
also contains excellent photos and drawings to
complement the text.
The names, terms, or words which need further
explanation are printed in the text in darker type,
and then the explanation is found to the right of
the text in the light blue margins. Example from
the text: "The brilliancy might have befitted
ALLADIN'S PALACE [in the text it is dark bold
type, not capitalized] rather than the mansion of
a grave old Puritan ruler." Margin note: Aladdin's
palace: A boy in THE ARABIAN NIGHTS , Aladdin,
discovers a magical lamp and ring that bring him
everything he wishes for."
There are also excellent Commentaries at the end
of each chapter. There is an especially good one
at the end of "The Custom House" intro to the
novel - that commentary includes sections titled:
"Hawthorne's philosophy of writing"; "Hawthorne's
role as surveyor"; "Hawthorne's Puritan heritage";
The origins of this novel"; and "The mirror of
imagination."...

Good, not great, not bad, just...above average........2003-02-01
This edition contains `The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' short stories and the novel `The Hound of the Baskervilles'. I actually stole this book from my High School library but I didn't want to read it until I had read the stories which preceded. Since I've already commented on `Adventures' in another review I'll stick to discussing `Hound'.
Written after Conan-Doyle's `Final Problem' short story about Holmes' `death' this book takes place before his confrontation with Moriarty at the Reichenbach Falls. Doctor Mortimer from Dartmoor comes to visit Holmes with the story of a beastly hound which has killed Charles Baskerville and will more than likely come after his heir Sir Henry.
Holmes promptly sends Watson off to Dartmoor to guard Sir Henry and report back with all developments. This is the point where Holmes disappears for almost half of the book. But he returns near the end to explain the mystery to all involved.
While it is better than Conan-Doyle's short stories in terms of a stronger narrative and a larger mystery `Hound of the Baskervilles' still suffers from long, ludicrous and unrealistic monologues and superficial contrivances. As always the story is told from the point of view of Watson. But it simply isn't a unique enough point of view to make the first person narrative worth it. I can honestly say that if the story was told in the 3rd person perspective it would make hardly any difference.
I cannot for the life of me work out how this book is sometimes regarded as a horror. Nothing in it scared me at all. The hound doesn't even show up until the end. And even then Conan-Doyle's description doesn't paint a very vivid picture in your head.
There just isn't enough intrigue or reason to keep turning the pages. The human and reality-based side of the story comes thru too strongly to allow any sort of fantastical creativity. As a classic it's a disappointment but compared to the short stories it's definitely better than the norm.
Book Description
A somber and compelling tale of love, pride, and moral struggle, The Scarlet Letter is considered Nathaniel Hawthorne's masterwork. A story of passion and atonement in Puritan New England, Hawthorne's story grows out of a radical ambivalence to America's spiritual, intellectual, and imaginative heritage.
The title, Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, part of Chelsea House Publishers' Modern Critical Interpretations series, presents the most important 20th-century criticism on Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter through extracts of critical essays by well-known literary critics. This collection of criticism also features a short biography on Nathaniel Hawthorne, a chronology of the author's life, and an introductory essay written by Harold Bloom, Sterling Professor of the Humanities, Yale University.

Please reconsider.......2001-06-07
First of all, these reviews are supposed to refer to the Barron's Book Notes, rather than the actual book which it summarizes. I myself have not read the Book Notes, and therefore cannot comment on them. However, as I see that most (if not all) of the reviews here are directed towards the original book itself, which I have read, I *can* comment on that.
I would like to take the opportunity to respond to these reviews, which are on the whole incredibly unfair and show a blatant lack of interest. With such negative attitudes, how do you expect to enjoy this book? You have closed your minds from the beginning, or so it seems, and not waited to see if the book is worth reading. I, too, read this book not by choice, but by obligation; it was required this year (sophomore) at my high school. After my horrible experience with _Jane Eyre_ last year, which was pure agony, I was not particularly enthusiastic; however, I was pleasantly surprised to find that _The Scarlet Letter_ is well-written, interesting, and rich in symbolism -- some obvious, some not. This book does tend to include long descriptions and go into detail, but this only helps increase understanding of the author's point, as well as make the story more realistic and easily imagined. There are several memorable events in this book -- Hester's brief removal of her letter, the scaffold scene, etc. Although at times difficult, if you persevere, I think you will be richly rewarded.
However, I do acknowledge that there are some people who are not fond of this style of writing, and I respect all opinions. Regardless, that is not an excuse to deem the writer a horrible one, or try to discourage all others from giving this book a chance.
I get it!.......2000-09-29
I am a junior in college. I had to read this book once before for a lit. class my junior year in high school. I admit it was a bit difficult to read the first time, but I understood and enjoyed it this time. I recommend looking into what was going on during the Romantic Period and gaining an understanding of what Romantic writers focused on. It will help you understand the story line. And if you get a chance, check out some other works by Hawthorne, like The Birthmark or Young Goodman Brown. That will help you understand Hawthorne's style of writing.
What a joke!.......2000-09-26
man, i have been reading this book for hightschool for almost 3 weekd now and we are only on chapter 12! that now dumb and complicated this book is to read. i feel that hawthorne went way beyond the standards for writing a good book. he plays with symbolism way too much and it tends to confuse the reads b/c they are unsure on what points to pick up on for being important. so i would have to say that iff you have to read this for school, just get the cliff notes and not waste the time in reading it!
What are you talking about?.......2000-04-04
I don't understand why anyone would bash this book. Maybe you just didn't get it. I found it to be a little drawn out but Hawthorne's use of smbolism was so incredibly obvious. The whole book was based on smbolism. It was worth the read.
what are you guys talking about!.......1999-12-08
ok first of all, you have to totally over analyze this story to get it, and second, whoever said this wanst transcendentalist, i dont know what they are smoking! what do you think the forest chapters were about and why did she live on the fringes of society? and the whole sybolism gig, if anyone had bothered to put the slightest bit of effort into reading this, it is SO obvious its not even funny! ( The A ,Pearl
the forest, the scaffold scenes, right down to the use of light and the river in the forest! i apologize to anyone who doesnt get it. There is so much to think about its overwhelming, yes i know, but dont use it as an excuse.
Book Description
Examining the complex relationships between the political, popular, sexual, and textual interests of Nathaniel Hawthorne's work, Lauren Berlant argues that Hawthorne mounted a sophisticated challenge to America's collective fantasy of national unity. She shows how Hawthorne's idea of citizenship emerged from an attempt to adjudicate among the official and the popular, the national and the local, the collective and the individual, utopia and history.
At the core of Berlant's work is a three-part study of The Scarlet Letter, analyzing the modes and effects of national identity that characterize the narrator's representation of Puritan culture and his construction of the novel's political present tense. This analysis emerges from an introductory chapter on American citizenship in the 1850s and a following chapter on national fantasy, ranging from Hawthorne's early work "Alice Doane's Appeal" to the Statue of Liberty. In her conclusion, Berlant suggests that Hawthorne views everyday life and local political identities as alternate routes to the revitalization of the political and utopian promises of modern national life.

Arthur Conan Doyle's Study in Scarlet is the first published story involving the legendary Sherlock Holmes, arguably the world's best-known detective, and the first narrative by Holmes's Boswell, the unassuming Dr. Watson, a military surgeon lately returned from the Afghan War. Watson needs a flat-mate and a diversion. Holmes needs a foil. And thus a great literary collaboration begins.
Watson and Holmes move to a now-famous address, 221B Baker Street, where Watson is introduced to Holmes's eccentricities as well as his uncanny ability to deduce information about his fellow beings. Somewhat shaken by Holmes's egotism, Watson is nonetheless dazzled by his seemingly magical ability to provide detailed information about a man glimpsed once under the streetlamp across the road.
Then murder. Facing a deserted house, a twisted corpse with no wounds, a mysterious phrase drawn in blood on the wall, and the buffoons of Scotland Yard--Lestrade and Gregson--Holmes measures, observes, picks up a pinch of this and a pinch of that, and generally baffles his faithful Watson. Later, Holmes explains: "In solving a problem of this sort, the grand thing is to be able to reason backward.... There are few people who, if you told them a result, would be able to evolve from their own inner consciousness what the steps were which led up to that result." Holmes is in that elite group.
Conan Doyle quickly learned that it was Holmes's deductions that were of most interest to his readers. The lengthy flashback, while a convention of popular fiction, simply distracted from readers' real focus. It is when Holmes and Watson gather before the coal fire and Holmes sums up the deductions that led him to the successful apprehension of the criminal that we are most captivated. Subsequent Holmes stories--The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, and The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes--rightly plunge the twosome directly into the middle of a baffling crime, piling mystery upon mystery until Holmes's denouement once more leaves the dazzled Watson murmuring, "You are wonderful, Holmes!" Generations of readers agree. --Barbara Schlieper

A study in scarlet.......2007-09-30
A study in scarlet is the first Sherlock Holmes adventure with Dr. Watson, the classic crime-solving partnership. I read it in Spanish (my first language) when I was around 9 years old and I love it at that time.
I just finish reading it, 21 years later and in english, and I still think is a great book.....short enough to read it in a week, probably less, nevertheless, complex enough to catch your attention.
I haven't finish The Sign of 4 yet, but so far it seems to be as good as a Study in Scarlet!
Super Reader.......2007-08-02
A lovely origin story. Dr. Watson, returned from a war and in need of lodgings is led to Baker Street. In this fine location resides one Sherlock Holmes.
They are soon on the trail of a mystery that involves a corpse, and a word scrawled in blood on a wool. Then there are dodgy mormons and a bit of wild west action.
Dr Watson, I'd like you to meet Mr Sherlock Holmes!.......2007-06-18
As Agatha Christie's "The Mysterious Affair at Styles" introduced a grateful reading public to Hercule Poirot, perhaps the second best known fictional detective of all time, Conan Doyle's "A Study in Scarlet" marked the debut appearance of the acknowledged master of detection, the one and only Sherlock Holmes!
John Watson, a medical doctor recently retired from the British military to recover his health and recuperate from wounds received in Afghanistan, is looking to stretch his limited budget by finding another gentleman with whom he can share accommodation. When a mutual friend introduced him to Sherlock Holmes, one might slyly suggest that the game was afoot and the rest, as they also say, became history. Already characteristically melancholy and moody, a jaded Holmes, who labeled himself the world's only consulting detective, is invited by Scotland Yard's Lestrade and Gregson to assist in the investigation of a baffling pair of murders.
With "A Study in Scarlet", Doyle is clearly new to the craft of writing mysteries and the great detective's debut outing suffers from characteristic first novel and new character jitters. The style itself is markedly different from everything that follows in the Holmes canon with the story being told from a third-party perspective. The background to the mystery is revealed through the mechanism of a flashback to the western USA at the time of the Mormon migration to Utah. Feedback from the reading public must have been immediate and - we'll have to hand it to Doyle - he must have been a quick learner. Watson was thereafter appointed official narrator and diarist to the master and Doyle never looked back.
I leave it to others smarter than I to judge whether or not Doyle's historical characterization of the Mormons is justified or accurate! Suffice it to say, that the mystery is entertaining but the details are, quite frankly, entirely unimportant beside the overwhelming fact that this was the first time the world heard the name "Sherlock Holmes". It took Doyle only a few pages for example to treat us to an aphorism that we would come to hear over and over again, "It is a capital mistake to theorize before you have all the evidence."
This novel is a cornerstone in the annals of crime fiction, an extremely important piece of the history of English literature and a darned good read! Enjoy it!

Another Mormon reader chimes in . . . .......2007-05-31
I recently picked up THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, which has been sitting on my shelf for over a year and I'm glad I did. The first book in the compendium of his early works is A STUDY IN SCARLET, to which I restrict my comments.
The story is broken into two parts. The first chronicles the murder and pursuit by Holmes, the second provides the background and motive for the murder and ultimately the resolution of the case.
A STUDY IN SCARLET is the first of many Sherlock Holmes novels and is a good place to start if you, like me, are aware of Holmes' preeminent status as the literary world's best detective, but have not yet taken the opportunity to read his adventures.
The first book introduces Holmes and Watson and chronicles how they came to be companions. It also gives an insight into the pains Holmes has taken to develop his sleuthing skills. This introduction is intriguing and will pull you along until the crime is discovered, at which point you'll be hooked.
The development of the rest of the first part is equally intriguing as the mystery becomes clearer and clearer to Holmes, though no more clear to the reader. One is truly impressed by all that is "elementary"* to Mr. Holmes, but imperceptible to we mere mortals.
The second part of the book takes place primarily in Utah at the time the valley was settled by the Mormons. Brigham Young and the burgeoning Mormon society are menacing and effectively occupy the role of the antagonist for the second part.
For those unfamiliar with the Latter-Day Saints, please note that this account is purely a work a historical fiction and is wholly inaccurate in its depiction of Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, and Mormons at large. For that, I deduct a star for the hazard it may present to those unaware of the true character of the Mormon faith. Personally, I found the second part more distasteful than will the average reader because I am a proud Latter-day Saint.
Still, with these flaws, the book is a wonderful introduction to a literary character with whom all should be familiar. I recommend the book.
* I must say that I was disappointed to find Holmes' catch-phrase "it's elementary my dear Watson" missing from this volume (though I don't deduct any stars for its absence). Surely, it appears in later works. I was waiting for it, but, alas, it didn't appear.
An Intriguing Mystery .......2006-02-17
A body is found in an empty house, but there are no wounds, or signs of struggle. With Scotland Yard officials baffled, Sherlock Holmes is called on the case. Watson and Holmes meet through a friend of Watson, because that Holmes is interested in sharing a suite on Baker Street with someone. Soon after moving in together, Holmes is asked by two top - ranking Scotland Yard officials for help with a case. A man was found dead in a house, with no wounds or signs of a struggle. Holmes finds the killer, a man from the United States name Jefferson Hope, and arrests him. But, before being put on trial, Hope dies from a heart failure. I would recommend this intriguing mystery novel to anyone.
One reason for my recommendation is because of the complexity of the mystery. To the normal person, the mystery may have seemed unsolvable, but Holmes somehow, even from the very beginning, seems to know the answer. Even with most of the facts at your hands that the average investigator would have seen, there seems to be no way to know what happened, and who the murderer was. But, Holmes figured it out, and it is even explained how that he figured it out.
Another reason for my recommendation is the way that Holmes solved the mystery, and the way that his thoughts were presented. Despite the complexity of the mystery, Holmes figures it out in a matter of days. He took notice of such things as the height of words written on the wall, and from that came to a brilliant conclusion on the height of the killer. He even noticed the size of the shoes that the victim and the murderer were wearing. The way that Holmes solved and explained the mystery was very interesting.
The last reason is the story behind the crime. Jefferson Hope, the murderer, explains everything about the crime before he dies, from motives to the difficulties in killing his victims. It turns out that many years before the crime, Jefferson Hope had been in love with a fine young lady, and was planning to marry her. But, a Mormon, who believed the girl should marry him, so killed her father, and took her away. The girl later died (from "unhappiness"), and Jefferson swore revenge on the one who took her away. He ended up following the two who killed her love, Strangerson and Drebber, all across the United States and Europe. After many years, he finally put them to rest in London, but was caught.
I would recommend this book to anyone, particularly fans of mystery novels such as this one. Doyle's descriptive writing and vivid use of vocabulary made this book a pleasure to read. If you're looking for a wonderful mystery, then you should read this book.
