Book Description
Waiting for Daisy is about loss, love, anger and redemption. It’s about doing all the things you swore you’d never do to get something you hadn’t even been sure you wanted. It’s about being a woman in a confusing, contradictory time. It’s about testing the limits of a loving marriage. And it’s about trying (and trying and trying) to have a baby.
Orenstein’s story begins when she tells her new husband that she’s not sure she ever wants to be a mother; it ends six years later after she’s done almost everything humanly possible to achieve that goal, from “fertility sex” to escalating infertility treatments to New Age remedies to forays into international adoption. Her saga unfolds just as professional women are warned by the media to heed the ticking of their biological clocks, and just as fertility clinics have become a boom industry, with over two million women a year seeking them out. Buffeted by one jaw-dropping obstacle after another, Orenstein seeks answers both medical and spiritual in America and Asia, along the way visiting an old flame who’s now the father of fifteen, and discovering in Japan a ritual of surprising solace. All the while she tries to hold onto a marriage threatened by cycles, appointments, procedures and disappointments. Waiting for Daisy is an honest, wryly funny report from the front, an intimate page-turner that illuminates the ambivalence, obsession, and sacrifice that characterize so many modern women’s lives.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic: Reminds me of "Eat, Pray, Love".......2007-10-03
I thoroughly enjoyed this book-- surprisingly, because I didn't have any personal experience with infertility. I do have many friends and relatives with these experiences, so I was curious to understand more about what they're going through. The author is a brilliant and clever writer-- I loved her "voice"-- it reminded me of Elizabeth Gilbert's "Eat, Pray, Love." She's funny, honest and insightful. This was actually a page-turner-- not what I would have thought for this type of memoir. I LOVED this book and I'm recommending it to all my friends.
Waiting for Daisy .......2007-09-25
This book was difficult to read. Author was cold, hard to connect with and not easy to agree with. Definitely not like-able or personable. Very selfish individual. I hope she raises Daisy to Not be like her.
Highly recommended for those feeling alone or isolated in their fertility journey!.......2007-09-24
This book was a God-send to me in my own painful infertility journey. Peggy's descriptions of her mental states expressed my own, but in ways I could not put words to. From her initial ambivalence about parenthood, to all-consuming obsessions with achieving it, her relations with her husband, and frustrations with fertility specialists, her journey affirmed that I was not alone in my journey. Her sense of humor and wit actually made me giggle a few times and, mostly, helped me feel so much less alone. I would highly recommend this book!!
A wonderful book.......2007-09-19
I read this book all in one evening. I loved every page of it. I have read just about every book on this topic, but no one has described, with such accuracy and eloquence, the trying to conceive journey like Peggy Orenstein. I have not read another book that I feel deals better with this topic, especially in terms of being realistic. Nothing seems forced, her doubts and concerns are so vivid. She states everything that has been swimming around in my head in such a clear and honest way, that it actually helped me to organize my own feelings about this struggle. I would recommend this book to everyone going through infertility, and to everyone who knows someone going through infertility, and to everyone else for that matter. It is beautifully written; touching, but funny; sad, but hopeful. This is a book that everyone will be able to relate to in one way or another.
Poignant, funny, and on-the-mark!.......2007-09-13
Peggy Orenstein's portrayal of a quest for a child in "Waiting for Daisy" is candid and humorous. I enjoyed every chapter of this thought-provoking book. Orenstein's honest eloquence in expressing her feelings throughout her incredible journey moved me so much. Time and time again, I found myself thinking, "I thought I was the only one who felt that way!"
Whether you have ever been through any of Ms. Orenstein's challenges: cancer, infertility, IVF treatments, and adoption attempts, or whether you have simply felt somewhat ambivalent about parenthood.... this book is for you.

A Tale of Three Kings: A Study in Brokenness.......2007-09-05
After living life for many years this book even makes more sense about the necessity of self being broken in order to be the obedient instrument God uses to accomplish His will. We pray "in Jesus name". If we believe this is proper, then the pecking order about all things belonging to the Father show we are only renters here which can easily be recognized from the attitudes of God's anointed that Edwards describes. A valuable plus by growing this insight can impact your own life with a deeper understanding of the acceptable approach to God. After reading this study it can make you more cognizant how to be a better follower of Christ, releasing us of perceived obligations that actually belongs to God alone. Our only job is to love God and do His will, anything else is vanity.
Been thorugh at lot a church.......2007-08-05
This book is an excellent book for any one that has ever been hurt through a church experience. If you have been involved in a church break up, youth pastor or asst pastor leaving, or have set under a "spear throwing " Pastor ( if you read the book you will understand). Get this book. If you work closely, to the Pastor get the book. if you will ever become a Pastor get the book. I read the entire book in one day. It is a real easy read.
Must-read for anyone who wants to understand leadership and authority better.......2007-07-26
This book is a revelation: very insightful and challenging, but incredibly easy to read. You'll be amazed at how easily Edwards can rock your world. I particularly recommend it to anyone who aspires to Christian leadership and, even more so, to anyone who has been burned by Christian leaders before. I first read this book coming out of a difficult situation on the mission field and this book really helped me to understand God's perspective on spiritual authority, service, humility and his own will. Actually, I wish every Christian would read it. It'll take you a few hours at most I'd guess.
very healing and touching book.......2007-07-05
I read this book when a friend gave it to me as a gift. The insight through the three kings' lives was very new for me. And every page takes you step by step to the healing process, helps you see the healing throughout the scars of Biblical characters... If you know someone hurt, offer this book to that person...
Elucidating truths about King David's life.......2007-04-08
A Tale of Three Kings contains helpful information about how we can thrive in spite of being under the leadership of someone who abuses authority. Succinct and easy to read. Powerful.

Customer Reviews:
Charming.......2007-06-22
Love it! I first heard this in a college lit class, and have since read it to a children's Sunday School class, an church Easter party, and an entire congregation of very traditional Baptists. The children always sit still to listen, and the grown ups always cry.
I love that it teaches without being technical or redundant, and I love the illustration of the three trees: the first time we see them, they're trees. The final time, each is bathed in light and in their new shapes. I get chills every time.
A classic tale for children and adults all year long.......2007-06-02
The Tale of Three Trees is a traditional folktale. This hardcover version is retold by Angela Elwell Hunt and illustrated by Tim Jonke. The text is clear, perfect for young readers. The illustrations are dark, but meaningful. They are full of detail often using silhouettes and great contrast.
The story begins with three little trees growing on a mountaintop. Each has a dream. The first wants to be beautiful and hold marvelous treasures. The second hopes to be the strongest ship carrying kings across the seas. The third never wants to be cut down. She dreams only to grow tall and point people to heaven.
The years pass and the three trees grow tall and strong. Three lumerjacks come and cut them down. The first two are initially excited, but then disappointed as they are turned into less than they had hoped. The first is built into a feedbox for animals. The second a small fishing boat. The third tree is simply cut into planks and left in a pile. They're dreams are all but forgotten until one night a young mother lays her newborn baby in the manger. That tree knows he hold the greatest treasure of all. Then the small fishing boat watches a weary traveller calm the stormy sea. He knows he holds the King of heaven and earth. Finally, the third tree is taken from the pile to form a cross. She feels ugly and ashamed when a man's hands and feet are nailed to her. But when the earth trembled on the third day, she knew "God's love had changed everything. It had made the first tree beautiful ... the second tree strong ... And every time people thought of the third tree, they would think of God."
What I Like: This tale is wonderful at Christmas, Easter and all year long! I love the simple story. It reminds us that God always gives us our desires, but sometimes they materialize in ways drastically different than we imagined.
What I Dislike: My kids are bored by the pictures. The illustrations are beautiful, but not for this age range. They're a little too dark and show very little action.
Overall Rating: Very Good.
Age Appeal: Baby-Preschool (according to Amazon), but I would say 3 and above.
Tanya -- Christian Children's Book Review (CCBReview *dot* blogspot)
Beautifully Done!.......2007-05-21
This was very well done. Very subtle, yet...as a very Christian adult, it almost made me cry. The artwork really caught my 3yr old's attention and my 5 and 7 yr olds loved the story (and making the connection between the wish and the finished product). We are giving this as a gift to a non-practicing Christian. It is subtle enough not to offend, but strong enough that it may spark some interest in furthering their Christian Faith.
Excellent book to share with children........2007-05-15
This wonderful story will bring tears to your eyes and value to your soul. Great to read to little ones at bed time.
Precious story.......2007-01-20
I read this story to the children in the Montessorie school and after ward they all said thank you and got in line to hug me they enjoyed it so well. Hope fully it will all cause us to think.

"There has obviously been some kind of mistake," writes Alexander T. Wolf from the pig penitentiary where he's doing time for his alleged crimes of 10 years ago. Here is the "real" story of the three little pigs whose houses are huffed and puffed to smithereens... from the wolf's perspective. This poor, much maligned wolf has gotten a bad rap. He just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, with a sneezy cold, innocently trying to borrow a cup of sugar to make his granny a cake. Is it his fault those ham dinners--rather, pigs--build such flimsy homes? Sheesh.
This 10th-anniversary edition of Jon Scieszka's New York Times Best Book of the Year, The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs!, includes a special, impassioned letter from prisoner A. Wolf himself and a snappy new jacket by Caldecott Honor artist Lane Smith, whose quirky perspectives still color the illustrations throughout. As with The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales, the collaborators take a classic story and send it through the wisecracker machine, much to the glee of kids young and old. (Ages 4 to 8 or much, much older) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
In this best-selling collaboration between author (and performer) Jon Scieszka and illustrator Lane Smith, with music by noted composer Kurt Hoffman, you will hear Alexander T. Wolf tell the story from his point of view. Side one features narration and music, while side two has music alone, so that you can read it out loud by yourself.
Customer Reviews:
Really funny twist to an old classic.......2007-10-09
Many think of the story "The three little pigs" as a worn out fairy tale. This book puts a new twist to the tale by adding a different point of view ... particularly from the WOLF's side. My children "howl" at the wolfs version of his mistreatment and being so misunderstood by the world. Opens ears of kids to listen to both sides and make up your mind as to what really happens..... my kids determined the wolf was full of it and the pigs in the end win out in their minds. Very funny book.
Perhaps more funny for adults than for pre-schoolers.......2007-08-30
I really like Jon Scienszka - especially _The Stinky Cheese Man and other tales_; but I suspect his stories are geared for a slightly older audience (age 5 and up) than for younger children, as the humor in _The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs_ is a bit sophisticated for younger (and more literal) children.
With that said, the premise - that the Big Bad Wolf is misunderstood, and the deaths of the 3 Little Pigs was just a big misunderstanding - is great: I like the idea of teaching children to empathize and think beyond the literal. And certainly children will develop this as they grow. I do recommend the book - the art, the story and the telling of it are masterfully done. However think about the relative intellectual maturity of the audience before buying ... it may be good wine before its time.
This version will blow you away!.......2007-08-19
Poor Big Bad Wolf - he always gets a bad rap. But now he is here telling his side of the story. According to him, it's all about a sneeze and a cup of sugar. Once again, Smith's illustrations are highly amusing, as is the story of a misunderstood wolf who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time (Riiiiiiiight). I love how the story has been jazzed up with phrases such as - "Can you believe it? I mean, who in his right mind would build a house of straw?" (as said by the wolf). This book really is short and sweet and hopefully it will make readers think about whose side of the story is correct.
A New Point of View on an Old Story.......2007-08-03
My children (ages 12, 8 and 5) had gotten this book from the library, but since they continued to read it over and over again, I thought we should have our own copy. It is a very clever story of the Three Little Pigs told from the wolf's point of view. As enjoyable it is for the children, it's just as enjoyable for the adult reading with them.
Grandmother's input.......2007-07-28
I bought this for my grandchildren, a boy who is eight and a girl who is seven. They like books so I was curious about their reaction. They both liked the story and the pictures. Their mother was particularly impressed. The humor is appropriate for children and for adults so I would recommend this for any age. It will make you smile.

My Father's Dragon--a favorite of young readers since the 1940s and a Newbery honor book--captures the nonsensical logic of childhood in an amusingly deadpan fashion. The story begins when Elmer Elevator (the narrator's father as a boy) runs away with an old alley cat to rescue a flying baby dragon being exploited on a faraway island. With the help of two dozen pink lollipops, rubber bands, chewing gum, and a fine-toothed comb, Elmer disarms the fiercest of beasts on Wild Island. The quirky, comical adventure ends with a heroic denouement: the freeing of the dragon. Abundant black-and-white lithographs by Ruth Chrisman Gannett (the author's stepmother) add an evocative, lighthearted mood to an already enchanting story. Author Ruth Stiles Gannett's stand-alone sequel, Elmer and the Dragon, and her third volume, The Dragons of Blueland both received starred reviews in School Library Journal and are as fresh and original as her first. (Ages 4 to 8)
Book Description
The classic fantasy trilogy of Elmer Elevator and the flying baby dragon has delighted children and their parents for generations. Now, on the occasion of their fiftieth anniversary, Random House is proud to bring the three timeless tales together in one beautiful commemorative edition, complete with the original delightful illustrations. A Newbery Honor Book and an ALA Notable Book, My Father's Dragon is followed by Elmer and the Dragon ("rich, humorous, and thoroughly satisfying"*) and The Dragons of Blueland ("ingenious and plausible, the fantasy well-sustained"*). Each story stands alone, but read in succession, they are an unforgettable experience.*Library Journal, starred review
Customer Reviews:
engaging classic.......2007-07-05
I recently purchased this CD set for a long car ride with my almost four year old. He loves listening to stories and this is no exception. The first of the three stories is our favorite, but all are well read; the narrator does the voices very well, which is most of the fun. These are classic tales, well worth exposing your children to. (The only caveat to the "classicness" is that they also contain material not sensored for modern political correctness. . . a slap, the word "queer", animals that consume humans, etc.).
Great for first time readers.......2007-06-04
Many years ago my wife and I were looking for a good book to give to our son as one of his own to read. The teen-age daughter of a friend recommended My Father's Dragon and it was perfect our son loved it and it is very good for young readers. He often returns to read the book again, 5 years later.
Just this past year we were struggling to get our 7-year old daughter to read anything, she would do anything not to read. I just handed her "My Father's Dragon" and she spent an hour reading it without a peep. She raced through the book in 2 days and it now moves from book to book with confidence and enjoyment.
I recommend this book highly for young readers. It's fantastic.
fantastic adventure.......2007-05-18
Young Elmer Elevator is, like Kipling's sailor, a "man of infinite resource and sagacity." When a stray cat he befriended tells him about a baby dragon being held prisoner on a far-away island, Elmer immediately puts together an eclectic selection of useful objects, stows away on a boat, and sets out to rescue the dragon. Such odds and ends as chewing gum, a brush and comb, hair ribbons, rubber bands and lollipops all turn out to be exactly what's needed to handle difficult situations. The second book in this three-in-one tells of Elmer's equally eventful return home. The third covers a second rescue, this time involving an entire dragon family. The stories are inventive and fun, and the pictures are delightful as well, leaving the reader wishing for more.
I would recommend this book for all ages. Our resident four-year-old has asked that it be read again and again.
Other recent favorites include Just So Stories and Mountains of the Moon.
EXCELLENT! .......2007-05-04
My 5 year old and myself enjoyed this book very much! I can't say anything negative. It is a great book!
Elmer and the Dragon -- a CLASSIC.......2007-02-15
I heard 2 of the 3 stories contained in this book read to me when I was
in Grade School [2nd grade]. The chapters are short enough to be used as a night by night READ to a young listener, prior to bed time, but these stories are charming even for adults to appreciate.
The main protagonist of this child's classic is a boy of 11 or 12 years of age by the name of Elmer Elevator. He travels abroad (on the advice of his newly acquired pet cat), and meets a juvenile dragon who is held captive by a jungle full of selfish animals. Elmer rescues Boris (that is the dragon's name), and that is where their adventures together begin. These stories have been in print for over 50 years but still retain their sparkle and charm and are timeless and fun for especially young readers or pre-reading listeners.

Book Description
When it comes time for the three little wolves to go out into the world and build themselves a house, their mother warns them to beware the big bad pig. But the little wolves' increasingly sturdy dwellings are no match for the persistent porker, who has more up his sleeve than huffing and puffing. It takes a chance encounter with a flamingo pushing a wheelbarrow full of flowers to provide a surprising and satisfying solution to the little wolves' housing crisis.
Eugene Trivizas's hilarious text and Helen Oxenbury's enchanting watercolors have made this delightfully skewed version of the traditional tale a contemporary classic.

I bought this book as a gift for the younger daughter of a friend. Since I had ordered Harry Potter for her sister, I wanted her to have something too. It turned out to be one terrific gift in many ways. As a parent and teacher, I would never give a book to a child without checking it first for suitability. I found the story delightful -- warmhearted and humorous. "And the moral of the story is . . . " even better than the original.
The best part for me was that the wolves, those so unfairly maligned family animals, are the Good Guys.
And oh yes, she loved it.
Subverts the original in the best way possible........2007-05-09
My children love this role reversal version of the classic story and so do I!

The three Little Wolves and The Big Bad Pig
By Eugene Trivizas
Once three little wolves got some bricks and made a house. But then the big bad pig came along and used a siedgehammer to make the house fall down.So the wolves asked a beaver with concrete for some and made a house.Next the pig came to the house and made it fall down. Then the rinno gave the wolves strong stuff to make a house with.Finlly the pig came and te house fell down and the wolves got some flowersand made a house and the pig came smelled the flowers and was good.
The theme of this book is stick together because the wolves don't go on different trails. The message is don't leave your family behind because the wolves don't leave each other behind. The gerne is fantasy fiction because wolves can not talk.I reccommed this book to my mom because she wants to make a strong house.
I like this book because the charactors different then the other three little pig books.I think the pig and the wolves were dran well because they were detaled.I like how the wolves were determaned to make a strong house.I liked the unacspeced events when the pig made the house fall down.

The three little wolves
And the
Big bad pig
by Eugene Trivizas and Helen Oxenbury
Once a momma wolf told her young it was time to live somewhere else but together. Soon they built their house of bricks; soon the big bad pig showed up he smashed the house with a sludge hammer luckily they all got away. They built two more houses one. The three little wolves built one more house hoping to not let it go to waist and it didn't. When the pig come to the next house of flowers he turned to a good guy because the flowers were nice and refreshing
The theme of this book is responsibility because the three little pigs need to look after each other and that is responsibility. The message of this book is to use your time wisely because the first three houses were not thought out and didn't have much time used on it. The genre of this book is fantasy fiction or fairy tale because animals can't talk. I reccomend this book to people who don't take their time because it could wreck or get messed up.
I liked this book because it has well detailed illustrations. They make the book seem real. I also liked the unpredictable and dangerous weapons. I loved the way the author switched the characters around by making the pig bad and the wolves good. I also liked the way there were many different event like how the pig turns good when the pigs build a house of flowers. I liked how the wolves made so many creative houses epically the one made of concrete.

Product Description
PreSchool-Grade 2 Only the familiar plot of this well-known Norwegian folktale is recognizable in this revision. Gone is the cadence and beauty of G. W. Dasent's translation of Asbjornsen and Moe's text, found in Marcia Brown's version (HBJ, 1957; o.p.). Instead there is language devoid of rhythm and mystery. In addition, unnecessary motivations are ascribed to the characters that serve to explain the reason for their violent actions (the troll is hungry; the big Billy Goat Gruff is angry). These explanations serve only to dilute the power of the story. The full-color illustrations are humorous; the goats walk about on their hind legs, the smallest goat wears a diaper and sucks a pacifier, and the biggest wears a black leather jacket, to reinforce the point that he is tough enough to destroy the troll. The troll is quite scary, and although he does have a nose as long as a poker, his eyes are not as big as saucers; the illustration that introduces the troll does not even show his eyes. A better purchase is Galdone's version (Clarion, 1981) which is well-suited for use with large groups and more closely follows the standard translation. Ellen Fader, Westport Public Library, Conn. Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

A current favorite.......2007-10-02
This has fast become one of my 2 year old's favorites. She can already recite the book almost word for word using different voices for each Billy Goat Gruff. We get a real kick out of listening to her "read" to herself!
Three Billy Goats-GREAT.......2007-04-04
I was just reminded of this teriffic retelling of Three Billy Goats Gruff. The suspense and pacing are brilliant. The illustrations are gorgeous AND funny. It was one of my all-time favorite read-alouds when I was a children's librarian. Galdone never failed in capturing the kids' imagination and story hour was always the better with one of his books. A MUST HAVE!
The illustrations are priceless!.......2007-01-23
A delightful retelling of the old story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff. This particular book stands out from all the others because of the illustrations, which are priceless! E.g., for the trip across the bridge, the bigger goats dress up the littlest one in a diaper; the biggest goat suits up in a black leather motorcycle jacket and dark glasses!
The book is as much fun for grownups as it is for children!
Two naaahs up for the Billy Goats Gruff.......2007-01-19
I used the book for a class I'm teaching on goats to 3-4 year olds. The story was a great success with group. The children were able to take what they learned about goats and see it pictured in the story. Example, goats have beards, horns and hooves. All of these features are beautifuuly illustrated on each page.
F.Y.I. Many of the children were happy to see the troll wasn't killed only pushed off the bridge. It is sonething to mention if it goes unnoticed.
Overall I highly recommend this version over any other I have seen out there because of the illustrations, simple text and story flow.
A favorite rendition of the classic fairy tale. .......2006-10-23
The kids just hoot when they see the biggest and meanest billy goat gruff dressed like a motorcyle dude in his leather jacket and sunglasses. The three billy goats (personified) have a problem and put their heads together to hatch a plan. They outsmart the ugly troll who lives under the bridge and finally enjoy a picnic of fresh green grass (checkered blanket, plates and all) on the other side of the bridge.

Children find the story of Goldilocks delightful for so many reasons. There's a trespassing little girl, for starters, who barges into the bears' house uninvited and not only snoops around, but eats the bears' food! The suspense of wondering whether she'll get caught only adds to the thrill of the trespassing itself, and the repeated lines about the three bears with their three distinct voices, bowls, chairs, and beds further endear this tale to the preschool set. In Jan Brett's Goldilocks, the bears and the slightly audacious flaxen-haired heroine all sport traditional (Black Forest?) costumes with detailed embroidery, and the wooden furniture is carved with bears, birds, and flowers. (Intricate borders--carved wooden panels in this book--are Jan Brett's special signature.) Brett is the illustrator of many well-known folk tales, fairy tales, and poems, such as The Mitten and Edward Lear's The Owl and the Pussycat. Of her exquisite interpretation of this beloved story, Booklist writes, "This is perfection." (Ages 3 to 6)

amazing detail.......2007-05-18
The great appeal to this book are the illustrations that have so much detail that a young child could really sit with this book and find something new in each retelling. I agree with some of the previous reviewers that the limitations of this book are that the illustrations do not emphasize big, medium and small. This is a real shame, as this story has always been a great start to introduce the concept of size to young children.
Attention to Detail.......2007-03-13
This is a nice retelling of the familiar three bears story. The only thing I did not like about the wording is that she refers to the bears as "great, huge bear", "middle-sized bear", and "little, small, wee bear". I think that this would be a mouthful to read aloud, and personally I just like "momma bear", "papa bear", and "baby bear" better. However, the illustrations in this book make up for it because they are absolutely gorgeous. They are incredibly detailed, and include the borders and previews to the next pages that Jan Brett is known for. I really enjoyed looking at this book, and found something new in the artwork each time I did!
Great Pictures, Solid Retelling, Great Message.......2006-07-15
Variations on "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" have long entranced children. Whether it is Robert Southey's version from 1837, whether Goldilocks was simply an old woman, or the many modern varieties, the themes are the same: If it isn't yours, don't touch it.
"Goldilocks and the Three Bears," as told and drawn by Jan Brett, is a thrill to read. With big pictures, ready for a parent or teacher to show to younger ones, it is in typical Jan Brett detail. Doe-eyed Goldilocks does all the things we expect, as do the two parent bears and their son, the little, small, wee bear.
Bear motifs decorate the bears' kitchenware, providing a "Where's Waldo?" type of exercising and a smile for the child as he finds another bear hidden in the pictures.
Special care looks to be taken with drawing a realistic rendition of Goldilocks.
The retelling is good, though not magnificent. It will read without a hitch as far as meter is concerned. It is prose, but told in a fairy tale mode. The repetitions of describing the bears as they discover evidence of Goldilocks will be fun to say and hear aloud.
The bears are not as intimidating as they might be in real life. When the final confrontation comes, it is far less scary. The bears, in fact, with the little one in particular, are sympathetic as they watch Goldilocks sleep. She runs not because of provocation, but from the surprise of waking with three large animals watching. I would run too!
I fully recommend "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" drawn by Jan Brett.

Magical Ilustrations.......2006-05-26
This book has beautiful, magical, fantastical pictures with Jan Brett's typical detail and whimsy. The bear's house is extraordinary. I think it is one of her very best books and goes well with the old-fashioned text. No other version of this story compares.
Best illustrations out there........2005-09-21
This whimsical depiction of Goldilocks and the Three Bears doesn't do anything new or innovative with the storyline, but it doesn't have to. Jan Brett's amazingly detailed and intricate pictures will capture your attenion on every page. I found myself going back over and over the pictures, finding more little details each time. Something that Mom and Dad can enjoy right along with the kids.

Jaid Black's contribution is the best, but the others are worth a read .......2007-08-13
Captivated By You - Author: Sherrilyn Kenyon
Rhea Stevenson is pretty hot, but she's also a by the book girl, and a little uptight. She's secretly crazy about Ace, one of her fellow Bureau of American Defense (B.A.D.) agents. Since he's a womanizer and she's set on following the "no office romance" rule, she acts as if she hates him and gives him the cold shoulder/evil eye every chance she gets. Unfortunately she's been assigned to work a case with him that has her posing as a dominatrix at an exclusive club to catch a terrorist.
Ace Krux has got it bad for Rhea, but she hates him and he doesn't know why. Fortunately he's maneuvered her into working a case with him that will involve her in skimpy outfits practicing her dominatrix skills on him. He's hoping that his charm and their near nudity will result in a little action. His prayers are answered and things heat up pretty quickly between them after she ties him down. Only now Ace isn't so sure he likes the idea of sending her into a room alone with a terrorist.
The characters weren't terribly well developed, but we did catch small glimpses into what made them who they are, and that made the romance more believable. I like the lengths that Ace was willing to go to in order to keep Rhea safe.
Promise Me Forever - Author: Melanie George
Ten years ago Savannah Harper and Donovan Jerricho were crazy in love, but with his pro-football career taking off there was a lot of strain on their relationship and when a misunderstanding causes Donovan to believe that Savannah has slept with one of his friend, they break up and Donovan leaves town without looking back. Savannah is pregnant, a fact that Donovan knows nothing about, and never will if she has anything to say about it. Now Savannah, a single mom to a precocious little girl, has finally agreed to marry Jake, her boyfriend of two years. Only, a few days before her wedding, Donovan Jerricho blows back into town stirring up feelings she thought were dead. They are both angry and bitter about the past, but can't help feeling that pull towards each other. Donovan learns the truth about that old misunderstanding and realizes that he made a big mistake and threw away the only woman he ever loved, but can he convince her of that before she ties the knot? He just might if she gave him half a chance, but since she won't he resorts to drastic measures and kidnaps her and plans to hold her hostage in their old love nest until she hears him out. And when will she tell him that Reese is his daughter?
I'm not sure how I felt about this story. He resorted to kidnapping, which was kind of creepy, but he couldn't find it in him to hold her. It bothered me that Savannah was willing to marry Jake after she realized that she still loved Donovan and that she loved him more than Jake. It bothers me that such a sweet stand up sort of guy would marry someone who didn't love him wholeheartedly and slept with her ex shortly before the wedding. Seriously, doc, have a little self-respect! Nice is one thing, doormat is something else all together! I hated that Savannah didn't have the guts to let Donovan know that he had a child and that she didn't tell her kid who her father was.
Hunter's Right - Author: Jaid Black
Corporal Ronda Tipton, U.S Army, is excited about her new assignment. She's going to be stationed at a research base in the Arctic. Unfortunately, her helicopter crashes somewhere in the Arctic Circle and she is the only survivor. Hoping that she was somewhere near the base when the chopper crashed, she heads out on foot. When she finds what appears to be a door in the side of a mountain, she thinks her prayers have been answered. She soon finds that she was mistaken as she stumbles upon the hidden Viking civilization of New Sweden that has thrived underground for hundreds of years. She is discovered and chased by giant Viking men. She nearly escapes, but is caught by Lord Nikolas Ericsson, a cousin to the King and a revolutionary. He believes she is a military spy and questions her about how she came to New Sweden. When he learns she is telling the truth about the accident, she is sent off the bride auctions. The auctions were once a respected tradition, but the Kings corruption has turned it into something of a sex slave auction where the men fondle the women who are brought before them naked and shackled. When it's Ronda's turn up on the block she takes serious offense to being manhandled and uses her martial skills to smack down the offenders and get free. Just as all hell is breaking loose Nikolas claims Hunter's Right, the law that says a man may keep a woman he has captured. Nikolas did not intend to marry until after the revolution, but not only did Ronda make him hot, she was a fighter and he hated to see her punished or handed over to one of the Kings vile friends. Ronda believes she must escape and find the base so that she can inform the military of what is going in this secret world, but she soon finds herself drawn to Nikolas. Will she choose freedom or love?
The sexual stuff is hot ... really hot, though this whole chains and aphrodisiacs stuff kind of squicks me. I really enjoyed the characters and though the whole women as property thing doesn't appeal to me overly much, I found myself very intrigues by their world and most especially that prophecy of theirs. I've read one other novella and Deep, Dark & Dangerous which were both set in New Sweden and I have to say, I'm looking forward to more.
4 Stars for Jaid and Jaid Alone.......2007-04-14
First of all, I've never been a big fan of Sherrilyn Kenyon's BAD series. I think the stories are unrealistic, the heroes are arrogant alpha males with no redeeming qualities, and the women are too fast-mouthed and sassy for my tastes. Also, I'd already read the collection Born to Be BAD and had read the short story in this collection. I wasn't impressed the first time, and I was equally underwhelmed this time.
As for the Melanie George story, it was such a snooze, I skipped to the next story after reading the first 5 pages. Boring!
Thank God for Jaid Black, who might be the only reason this collection even sold. Hunter's Right is erotic, passionate, and entertaining--almost enough to make up for the clear misses by Kenyon and George. I read another story about Black's underground Vikings in the novella collection Playing Easy to Get, so if you liked Hunter's Right, I'd suggest you check that one out. It has another equally bad BAD story by Sherrilyn Kenyon, but also includes the first story in Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark series, which is a real treat if you like paranormal romance. I have that collection to thank for leading me to Jaid Black, and while Hunter's Right was great, it's not enough to make Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down worth purchasing. I'd buy it used or check it out from the library instead.
Almost a Loser, Saved by Jaid Black.......2007-02-13
Anthologies either tend to be really good or really bad. With authors Sherrilyn Kenyon, Melanie George and Jaid Black, I was expecting great stories and only Jaid Black delivered. If not for her story Hunter's Right, this book would have rated a quick trip to the garbage can.
The first story in the series is Sherrilyn Kenyon's Captivated by You. Secret Agents Rhea and Ace are assigned to a terrorist case whose leader prefers S&M. Rhea and Ace must learn the ins and outs (no pun intended)to successfully convince their quarry that they are legitimate S&M artists so they can gain his confidence and get the information to crack the case. The problem with this story is all the cheesy one liners and predictable interlog and jokes. It was actually rather boring.
The second story "Promise me Forever" by Melanie George was the worst of the three. I only thought the first one was boring until I read this story. If you want to be dumped by your longtime boyfriend after he becomes a famous football player only to take him back after he is down and out (and by the way dump your good as gold fiance for him) go ahead, but don't expect readers to buy it. There was no passion and no warm fuzzies with this story.
The last story by Jaid Black "Hunter's Right" was by far the best of the three stories. Ronda is a military official on a secret mission in the Artic Circle. When the helicopter she is on crashes, Ronda is the only survivor. Knowing there is a secret military headquarters nearby, Ronda goes searching for help only to stumble across a hidden underground civilization of an ancient race of Vikings. Believing the prophecy that their forefathers warned of where women would become near extinct because of genetic tampering with births, these Vikings venture above ground from time to time and steal unattached females to put on the "Bridal Auction Block". An injured Ronda stumbles onto an auction in progress and is horrified to see these women striped naked and inspected like livestock by men looking for wives. She attempts to flee, but is captured by gorgeous Nikolas Ericsson. Nikolas covets Ronda but believes she wouldn't want him, however when he sees her taken away in chains after beating [...] out of the auctioneers, he claims hunters rights to keep her safe. Nikolas is building his weapons supply and army to overthrow the current leader of the underground nation. He wants to restore more dignity to the bridal auction and make civilization better for all the citizens. When Ronda realizes she can never return to her old life, she decides to make the best of her marriage. Ronda and Nikolas end up falling in love. The sexual scenes definitely are not boring, however some people may be turned off by the crude language and descriptions both Ronda and Nikolas use. However, I think this story saved the series. I kind of wish it had been a longer more in depth story as these characters deserved development, but it was still good.
Don't Bother.......2007-02-04
I like all of these authors, but this book had very little to offer in the way of erotic romance. Don't bother
Couldn't put it down..........2006-11-02
I thought the stories in this book were good for the length of each one. I have to say that "Captivated by You" was the best of all three. If you like short, steamy, predictable stories you'll like this book!

Once upon a time three pigs built three houses, out of straw, sticks, and bricks. Along came a wolf, who huffed and puffed... So, you think you know the rest? Think again. With David Wiesner at the helm, it's never safe to assume too much. When the wolf approaches the first house, for example, and blows it in, he somehow manages to blow the pig right out of the story frame. The text continues on schedule--"...and ate the pig up"--but the perplexed expression on the wolf's face as he looks in vain for his ham dinner is priceless. One by one, the pigs exit the fairy tale's border and set off on an adventure of their own. Folding a page of their own story into a paper airplane, the pigs fly off to visit other storybooks, rescuing about-to-be-slain dragons and luring the cat and the fiddle out of their nursery rhyme.
Wiesner, Caldecott Medal recipient for Tuesday, and Caldecott Honor winner for both Sector 7 and Free Fall, prefers not to wait around until pigs fly. He gives them wings (or paper airplanes) and sets them on their way! In his latest flight of fancy, Wiesner uses shifting illustration styles and fonts to startle complacent readers into an imaginary world even as they ponder the conventional structure of story. His trademark crafty humor and skewed perspectives will tickle readers pink (even the nonporcine variety)! (Ages 4 and older) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
This picture book begins placidly (and familiarly) enough, with three pigs collecting materials and going off to build houses of straw, sticks, and bricks. But the wolf's huffing and puffing blows the first pig right out of the story . . . and into the realm of pure imagination. The transition signals the start of a freewheeling adventure with characteristic David Wiesner effectscinematic flow, astonishing shifts of perspective, and sly humor, as well as episodes of flight. Satisfying both as a story and as an exploration of the nature of story, The Three Pigs takes visual narrative to a new level. Dialogue balloons, text excerpts, and a wide variety of illustration styles guide the reader through a dazzling fantasy universe to the surprising and happy ending. Fans of Tuesday's frogs and Sector 7"s clouds will be captivated by old friendsthe Three Pigs of nursery fame and their companionsin a new guise.

Wow! Adorable Art & Story, but Abstract - a review of "The 3 Pigs".......2007-09-21
Well, the surprise is on me. I thought after previewing this book that because of its abstract twists and turns that it was going to be over my children's heads - they are boy and girl, almost 5 and almost 7 respectively. But I was wrong. Not only did they understood what was happening, they thought the artwork was really silly and fun. And as soon as we were done they asked for the book to be read again. And after we were done the second time, they asked for it a third time, which is fairly unprecedented in our home. [Go figure. Just when you think you know your children they spring some surprise on you -- lol.]
The abstraction I'm talking about is artistic. You see in this book the Piggies aren't content to stick to the standard "Three Little Pigs" script. Instead they escape from their regular storybook pages and traipse about visiting other fairytale characters. Pigs are seen moving out of one page and art style, and into another story with it's different artistic motif. And whether a child is ready for such a deviation is going to determine whether they enjoy this book.
Four Stars. Very clever artwork. Not a Read-Aloud in the traditional sense, my children couldn't wait to go through it again and again. Will your child 'get it'? Hard to say. The artwork and story here have levels of abstraction that are just going to swoop over some small children's heads as some reviewers have indicated. I certainly liked it, and my children and I would recommend it.

The Three Pigs/ Wiesner.......2007-08-12
Because it was a caldecot award winner I thought how can I go wrong. Was disapointed. I just couldn't appreciate the cut and paste feel of this traditional story gone mad. Not worth the discounted price.
Tickled pink with this one.......2007-08-10
You never know what to expect from David Wiesner and he delivers again with "The Three Pigs". This is one of my all-time favorite picture books, just for the sheer cleverness of taking a well-known tale and twisting it. From an artistic point-of-view it is absolutely brilliant! I love how the pigs change their appearance as they travel through the story (by paper airplane fashioned from a torn out page). There is so much attention to detail, kids will want to look through it again and again. To those people who don't understand how the book won awards - The Caldecott Medal is given to the most distinguished PICTURE book. "A picture is worth a thousand words."
Wifes hates it. I like it. 3.5-year-old daughter loves it........2007-02-20
I was at the library and did a quick thumb-through of this book to see if the words per page were about right for reading to my daughter. They were, so I checked out the book.
When we got home, I "read" it to my daughter. It turns out that I had to explain a lot of things, but my daughter was able to follow along and she enjoyed the illustrations. Of all the books we brought home that day, my daughter requested re-reads of Wiesner's "The Three Pigs."
So, if you're looking for quality interactive reading time with your child, "The Three Pigs" just might be for you. What you think of the book will most likely depend on your ability to explain the story and your child's ability to understand it. If your child keeps asking for you to read it, consider it a good thing.
