Everything you always wanted to know about astral travel is explored in Astral Voyages by ex-dentist and hypnotist Bruce Goldberg. Discussing the four types of out-of-body experiences, he answers such wide-ranging questions as, "Why do some people leave their physical body while simply talking or walking? How do you meet kindred souls on the astral plane? What is lucid dreaming? What other dimensions are out there? What is your karmic purpose?" This clearly written, no-fluff book is full of helpful checklists, definitions, scientific explanations, detailed descriptions of various states (for example, how to know when you're dead), contemplation exercises, visualization techniques, how-to instructions, and, excuse the phrase, much, much more. If you're an aspiring astral traveler, don't leave home without it. --Randall Cohan

5 out of 5 stars "Now, the Voyager!".......2007-07-25

A hair more than 250 pages, this book talks about (duh) astral stuff. I got it about a year or more ago because I wanted some base info on astral voyaging and this book fit the bill nicely. The first thing you see is a quote, by Greek philosopher Posidonius, more than 2000 years ago: "The body of the sleeper is as one dead, but the soul lives on in the fullness of its power." (Awesome, huh?)

Astral travel, as the book says, is traveling at the speed of light, to a place where all past, present, and future events occur simultaneously. You may travel to a foreign country, the Moon, or just to the other side of the room. You might visit a friend or a relative. Wouldn't it be nice to take a journey and NOT have to think about MONEY for hotels, food, and plane fare? We use some ridiculous amount of that grey matter we call a brain, something like 3 %? Wonder what the rest is for? Hmmmm. So, open yourself up to the possibility and just think about it. I found the book very interesting. Anyway, the author said you astral travel when you dream anyway, so poo-poo that one, Bucko!

Lots of people claim to have Out-of-Body Experiences (OBEs) and Near-Death Experiences (NDEs). My oh-so-logical left-brained brother had a NDE during a lung cancer operation. It took him awhile before he could bring himself to tell me about it. It blew his logical brain all to heck when he waited on the "other side" while they decided if he would stay or go back. He said it was so beautiful there he didn't know which he wanted to do. Then they came and got him and took him back (but he only stayed about 6 more months). Anyway, this book talks about OBEs and NDEs as well as astral projection, astral entities, other dimensions, astral voyaging techniques, lucid dreaming, astral healing, and (woobie-woobie) astral SEX. Chapter 12 is "Astral Sex." I'm sorry, I can't discuss it with you; I don't know you that well. You'll just have to read it for yourself, but v-e-r-r-y interesting.

Chapter 14 names some scientific groups who study astral voyaging and mentions a blurb on each and what they're doing: The Society for Psychical Research, The American Society for Psychic Research, The Psychical Research foundation, Stanford Research Institute.

By the way, the book also provides some info on charkas, the auric body, aura colors, [ascended] masters and guides, the akashic records, and lots of other base info. It provides tips as well as techniques for astral voyaging--you know, the "how to". Like I said, an enjoyable book with lots of general info plus techniques. I suspect you will read it more than once, too.

5 out of 5 stars The only Astral Book you'll ever need!.......2007-03-11

This is the only book you'll ever need on Astral Travel. The book is not filled with misinformation - perhaps to those who have not tried it or who gave up to soon. I stumbled on this book by mistake - having been astral traveling for years - so I bought the book and the Darth Vador thing might seem like a joke to some people, but it is infact funny to those of us who do astral travel and have had like situations happen. For someone who has been astral traveling for years (without books or guidance) I found this book incredible useful as it taught me new things that worked when I tried them out. The book is organized wonderfully and though a few chapters were hard to get through (a few only) it was still worth reading them as the information is very informative and really helps you reach new levels in your astral voyoages. I give it five stars and I highly recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars What do I do with this book?.......2006-05-17

I completely agree with the review that questioned Bruce Goldberg's knowledge of the subject matter. I purchased the book because the jacket suggested interesting subject matter. Trying to read through each chapter was agonizing. The author would do well to have a good editor organize the book, putting topics under a chapter heading appropriate to the content. Oh, I agree. The content seemed to have been made up. The book is riddled heavily with misinformation.
I have an advanced degree in psychology and have studied unconventional therapy methods. Woe to his clients! Mr. Goldberg tries to impress by sprinkling his book with references to psychological theory. His training as a dentist attests to his background in psychology.
The question of what to do with the book...I wouldn't give it to anyone, except as a joke. I certainly won't be referring to any information contained therein. Oh well, it's been a lesson in avoiding any works by this author in the future.

1 out of 5 stars Deceiving the Masses.......2006-02-09

This book is riddled with fallacies and very poorly organized. Although some of the ideas were interesting, it seemed like the author just made everything up! It's amazing that something like this actually got published.
I think this paragraph about the author's "trip" to one of the astral planes speaks for itself.
"Suddenly the figure of the evil Darth Vader came out of the woods... My astral sense of humor was in attendance, as I created a can of spinach, opened it with miniature lightning bolts, and consumed this can of power immediately.
Just like Popeye, my fists grew in size, and I punched Darth Vader right through his helmet..."
How stupid does the author really think we are? This obviously reflects his opinion of the readers of his book.
If you want to expand spiritually, I suggest reading something by Thich Nhat Hanh, or any author that knows what they're writing about.

The book is fantastic for those who want to shed the physical realm. A great guide for the beginner in Astral Projection.

Book Description

This book takes the reader on a fantastic journey through a wide range of cultures and traditions to examine the phenomenon of ecstatic visionary experiences—from Sumerian Gilgamesh and the Taoist Immortals to the imaginative fiction of Jorge Luis Borges. The author provides a comprehensive tour of otherworldly journeys common from immemorial times among shamans, magicians, and witches, and illustrates their connection with such modern phenomena as altered states of consciousness, out-of-body experiences, and near-death experiences.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Shaman's Journey.......2003-06-01

This book, written by well known religious scholar I.P. Couliano, provides a wonderful background to the shamanic journey and how it can be found within all societies. He does a very nice cross cultural survey of Shamanism (and relatd concepts) in the early part of the book, showing the similarities of belief in the Americas, Siberia, Melanesia and elsewhere, as well as in Africa and Australia. From there he goes on to show the otherworldly journeys of the Mesopotamians, Egyptians, Chinese Taoists, Buddhists, Iranian mystics, Greek Medicine Men and Hebrew Qabbalists. Remarkable intellectuals and visionaries fill out the last couple chapters, including Neo-Platonic philosopher Plotonius, the Prophet Mohammad and Dante Alighieri, author of the Divine Comedy. Over all, this is perhaps the greatest non-culture specific survey of the Shamanic journey available. I strongly recommend that anyone interested in Shamanism, religious experiences and mysticism in general check out this book. Considering how widely varied Shamanism is (incorporating everything from Siberian and Polynesian religions to the ecstasies of Voudon and Santeria to Sufi mysticism and beyond), it might be a good beginning book.

WOw!This is very important to read, especially that this was Culianu's last book to be published. WHen he wrote it, he was receiveing threating phone calls from somebody(?), and if you think a little bit.. Out of this world....hmmm? What does that mean??It necessarily means that he knew that he was going to die?Well if you want to know more about Couliano's death(the first case in USA of a teacher killed in this way) read Ted Anton's book. Anyway, this book is a must read for anybody interested in the meta's(metaphysics, metempsychosis, etc)or in the study of religions .

4 out of 5 stars Real Adventure.......2002-11-14

This is a very nice entry by a writer better known for his
fiction, but this is a collection of "real adventure" stories,
and White does a first-class job of describing some of his
travels.
The series of short stories relates the writer's adventures as
he has traveled to remote, and some not so remote, places around
the world, wherein he has been seeking adventure beyond that
experienced by most of us in our everyday world. As such, his
stories will excite genuine interest and further curiosity on
the part of readers who wish to know more about experiences
in those areas denied to most of us.
Most of his adventures are funny to read, although we can also
understand some of them were definitely not funny at the time
of the experience. So we can vicariously enjoy travel to distant parts of the world, as well as the encounters with
"foreign" cultures. After all, even coon hunting in Ohio is
foreign to most of us in our modern civilized world.
Some readers will no doubt be unhappy at the "macho" aspect
of some stories, but most men wish, in their hearts, for such
adventures in far-away places, and those same men wish for
exciting, even dangerous, encounters without kids and womenfolk. Well, not all the time, of course, but a time or two
in their lives, and in this day and age, in the U.S., most
men are denied even the occasional dangerous adventure.
So, if we can't go to all those places, and encounter the wild
and dangerous, we should be able to enjoy reading about them.
And White provides some nice stories of such adventures he has
taken.
Most of his encounters have been short-term, frequently very
brief, because he wrote them for a magazine and was on assignment, but, nonetheless, they are real, and we should
enjoy whatever closeness these stories provide.
As a matter of fact, one possible criticism of this work is
that the stories are too short, really, and we wish White had
been able to flesh them out and expand his impressions. In several of the stories, we can feel the writer's rush, and compression of thoughts, as he has to comply with a magazine's
demands and deadlines.
But settle back for some visits to strange places, and odd characters, when you read White's stories.
They are a lot of fun.

3 out of 5 stars It's good, but not his best work.......2002-08-03

I love Randy Wayne White's writing. And Last Flight Out is good - "Survival Spanish" had me in stitches and "Those Who Hide Behind the Caskets of Innocents" captures the sentiments of America better than anything I have read on 9/11. I also enjoyed his unraveling of the "Mossman" tale in Sun Valley (we've got folks like that in Oregon, too). Yet after finishing the collection of his essays, I was left wanting. To judge Last Flight Out fairly, there is much to like here, but it pales in comparison to his earlier work. The humor and matter-of-fact writing style that makes him so enjoyable is still present, but the articles are a bit testosterone leaden for my taste. For example, White's bantering about travel in rural Cuba (in "Cuba"), his bragging about "dangerous friends" in Central America in "Bike Cops" and his scoffing at those Americans who were too intimidated to fly after 9/11 in the introduction wore a bit thin on me.

If you are familiar with Randy Wayne White, you will find much to like and laugh at here. If you are browsing for adventure / travel books, I recommend starting with Batfishing in the Rainforest first.

5 out of 5 stars You're in for a treat- read this book!.......2002-02-08

Readers fortunate enough to have already discovered Randy Wayne White will relish this collection of adventures from this very talented writer. If this is the first of White's books you read, you will become a life-long fan by the end of the introduction. Some of these accounts have appeared in previously published columns, and will trigger smiles of recognition in those who have followed the author's prolific career. Hang on for a wild ride that includes ports of call in Borneo, Costa Rica, Panama, Baja California, Key West, Idaho, Cuba, and points beyond. At times riotously funny (Survival Spanish) and patently absurd (roaming the woods in a bedsheet, sporting headgear of moss in The Mossman), it also causes poignant reflection (The Lost Divers). The book is worth the purchase price just for the inclusion of White's powerful response to the tragic events of Sept. 11th, "An Open Letter to He Who Hides Behind the Casket of Innocents". The author's unique perspective on the human experience makes this book a worthy addition to your collection.

    Book Description

Trust is inherent in travel. We ask a stranger for directions, or for a ride. We live among people whose language, culture, and motivations we don't understand. Trust binds us to another with an intoxicating energy; it is brave, giddy, joyous, and lustful. A sudden attraction careens into sexual surrender, and trust becomes unconditional. Trust laughs at danger and leaps into the unknown.

The author of Abuses and Foreign Bodies, Alphonso Lingis has traveled the globe for many years, and in Trust he reflects on journeys from Latin America to Asia to Antarctica. Whether feeding chocolate sauce and tuna to the baboons who visit his campsite in Ethiopia, celebrating the millennial New Year in Mongolia, or indulging in a passionate love affair in Vietnam, Lingis evaluates what happens around him and how it affects him and others. From these experiences he gains new understandings about spirituality, masculinity, love, death, ecstasy, and change.

In the tradition of such international travelers as Paul Theroux, Pico Iyer, and Ryszard Kapuscinski, and with insight reminiscent of John Berger and Joan Didion, Lingis shares both the private revelations and the universal connections he acquires on his exotic journeys. "Travel far enough," he concludes, "and we find ourselves happily back in the infantile world"—where trust is ultimate.

    Book Description

Woolf’s first novel is a haunting book, full of light and shadow. It takes Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose and their niece, Rachel, on a sea voyage from London to a resort on the South american coast. “It is a strange, tragic, inspired book whose scene is a South americanca not found on any map and reached by a boat which would not float on any sea, an americanca whose spiritual boundaries touch Xanadu and Atlantis” (E. M. Forster).

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Voyage Out.......2006-10-10

I am a fan of Virginia Woolf, and this is her first major piece of work - however, it wasn't the first thing that I read from her, and I would advice against people starting off to read her work with this book because there are other books, such as Mrs Dalloway and To the Lighthouse that convery more the style that she became famous for.
The Voyage Out is a fascinating character study with wonderful, lyrical descriptions that are so vivid and situations that promise to stay with you for a long time. Basically, a group of Britons travel to the South Americas, and thus starts an adventure for a naive young Englishwoman with love, and then Virginia Woolf experiments with her style narrative to give you a surprise twist. It's a very satisfying book if you find pleasure in going through the whole descriptions, humour, and sometimes the 'non-plot'. It stands by its own from any other of her work, I think.

4 out of 5 stars Flawed, but beautiful.......2005-09-10

I bought this book because I must own all by Woolf, as a matter of need rather than want--or so I feel. Although I'm able to recognize the shortcomings (far less than my own) that inevitably accompany experimental, modernist work, my opinion of her genius is curiously immune to these objective observations. She is like my literary mother, so I was chastised never to have known this novel existed until I began reading it.

As far as form and structure go, I feel Woolf tries too hard to be conventional: she can't ever quite fit into it properly, and you realize why it took her so long to complete the book. As always, however, she is a master of the character, something I didn't realize until the end, where every character is felt so strongly that I almost cried. I know.

However awkward the overall construction may be, and however much it may drag, you feel the beginnings of her future craft. The climax is it, where she finally catches the pace and throws you mercilessly against the ridiculously shallow aspect of everyday life. And the arbitrary but crushing beauty of love. I dreamt about it for days afterward.

    5 out of 5 stars A True Voyage Out.......2005-03-03

This novel is not necessarily the best overall story that I have read in terms of style and content. The plot follows a simplistic, sequential pattern and the supposed climax is not as surprising as it is portrayed to be. Luckily, this is not the reason to read this novel. The Voyage Out is in no way the greatest novel ever written, but the ideas that it represents and the thought that it provokes on topics ranging from imperialism to gender roles in society to love among intellectuals is more than worth the read.

We first meet Rachel aboard her father's ship and from the first conversation we are privey to, it is obvious that she is not an ordinary woman. She in no way realistically approaches her proper place in London Society and of course it is through Woolf's feminist viewpoint that we discover how much more of a human being Rachel can become by not following those patterns. In fact, we are introduced to many women throughout the novel, all ranging in their places from aristocratic wife to single author to inexperienced flirt to old widow and all that is in between. Woolf never truly tells which she prefers, but the reader is given an in depth look into the advantages of each lifestyle.

The men on the other hand are portrayed most basically as heartless, unpitying, logical beings, or in other words, the common man of that time, the common educated man of the time that is. Though each man has his own story, it is only Hewet, the one man who in hindsight acts as a woman, who is able to win the heart of Rachel and in fairness, fall madly in love with also. It is also shown in the end of the novel how there is a certain strength in men, a strength that can be both good and bad. The reader is surprised how some of the men handle disaster while they are dissapointed with how others could be so uncaring.

The character sketches set forth in this book are nothing short of spectacular in everything they represent. I consider myself well read and it is this book that I would say most accurately portrays the idea of falling in love. It is not love at first sight, nor is it a burning passion that cannot be quenched. Instead, it is two ordinary, if not so unonrdianary, people who realize that their lives just might not be the same without each other in it. There are no fireworks, there need be none and as the book is being read, a strange joy begins to creep up inside of one. Then again, all joy is not meant to last forever and I must admit that the lasting impressions is one of depression, not joy. This is not necessarily a bad thing though. Somehow, Woolf is able to show us through a seemingly random cast of 19th century characters that the world today has perhaps not changed as much as we would like to believe and it is that timelessness that makes this novel more than worth the small time it takes to read it

5 out of 5 stars Opening to love and humanity.......2002-09-07

Rachel Vinrace, a young woman not quite acquainted with the ways of the world, accompanies her aunt and uncle (the Ambroses) to South America, where she eventually falls in love with a young aspiring writer. Swirling around this tale of doomed love are the many other characters who all influence each other and are themselves influenced. Most of the novel is about Rachel, but Helen Ambrose is equally central to the story, as a comparison to her niece and in her own internal voyage. Chronicling the inner lives of her characters, Woolf, in her first novel, explores the awakening of first love, the influences of men (and the culture they have control over) upon women, the confusions we as human beings have in our daily communications with others. Originally entitled "Melymbrosia", "The Voyage Out" went through many revisions as Woolf claimed language for her own uses and effectively began a new literature (for her time), where the internal life and the interconnectedness of humanity are the central themes.

4 out of 5 stars Indications of Genius.......2001-04-26

"The Voyage Out" was Virginia Woolf's first novel. This work is much more even and mature than many writer's first books, however. True, "Voyage Out" is a much more typical novel of the time (it was published in 1915). Her later works would be much more experimental, and "Voyage Out" indicates some of this - the multiple viewpoints and emphasis placed on character's inner lives are both key aspects of this work. And Woolf's mastery of the English language; her ability to write of both the "big events" and the "everydays" of life in a new and exciting way that skirts the melodrama of some of the earlier Victorian novelists is in full flower. Michael Cunningham's introduction, while pretty basic as far as biography and literary criticism go, is a good introduction to Woolf that doesn't put too much of an emphasis on her life over the merits of her work, a tendency that is all too frequently indulged in. Most people nowadays have heard of Virginia Woolf, and may know that she was mad and committed suicide; most people are, however, not aware of the key place she plays in the development of the English novel, and of the power her works still have. Cunningham has some interesting things to say about the place her writing and particularly her fiction play in our view of literature. (Michael Cunningham's most recent novel, "The Hours", is a sort of improvisation which plays off of and comments on Woolf's novel "Mrs Dalloway"; "The Hours" also features Virginia as a character. One more interesting note about "The Voyage Out" is that it introduces us to Richard and Clarissa Dalloway who will go on, of course, to be key players in "Mrs Dalloway"). Just as Cunningham's essay is a good introduction to Woolf Scholarship and Biography, "The Voyage Out" is a good place to start. Not only is it the first of her works, but perhaps more immediately accessible than some of the later works. However, this accessibility is not at the expense of greatness - "The Voyage Out" is not a "lesser Woolf novel" by any means. On the contrary, it deserves to stand with "Mrs Dalloway", "To the Lighthouse" and "The Waves" as a key part of her work.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! You'd think you were on the Titanic!.......2007-01-17

I purchased this CD to use in a Titanic program I was presenting at a museum. The music is wonderful! The orchestra used the actual titles and actual instruments that they would have used on the ship. The people attending the program said that this music really set the mood. If you love anything Titanic, you need this CD.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for adult or young sci-fi fans..........2003-05-21

96 pages of alien races, new worlds, and color pictures going along with the text. The book tells you everything you need to know, from cost, travel, local facilities at the hotels (like menus and baby-sitters available) and rules one must follow to stay safe. The last page is a booking form so the reader can select where to visit and alert the Galactic Tours about how much sleep you, the reader, need, your caloric intake and other requirements. Great for the child of the family or the child within.

4 out of 5 stars Tour the galaxy with Thomas Cook!.......2000-10-26

"Galactic Tours" is a charming little book for escapists like me. It is pretty much a collection of description of fictional tours to exotic planets, organized by their distance from Earth, each description complete with accomodations, prices, local attractions - everything a tour book should concern itself with. The book starts with the basics of space travel - takeoff, staying at an orbital station, touring the moon, Mars, and several other planets and satellites, and eventually introduces the reader to faraway (and, of course, fictional) planets, each with its own central catch (volcanic planet, mushroom-covered planet, metal planet). "Galactic Tours" would be intolerably dull and perhaps even irritating, but each two-page spread of descriptive text is preceded with a fantastic painting that makes the whole thing come alive. In all honesty, I cannot imagine anyone buying this book, although it does make a lasting favorable impression.

I loved this book. I read in about 16 years ago and the art and text really transported me to other alien worlds. Well done.

      Book Description

A hair-raising trip that two brothers took down the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers and around the Gulf of Mexico to Key West, that will have you rolling on the floor laughing. They set out on this voyage aboard a seventeen-foot sailboat during the Great Flood of '93. This book is loaded with stories about all the crazy and unexpected things that happened along the way. These tales are fueled by the fact that neither one of them knew anything about sailing or even boating for that matter. They had no navigational equipment except a compass, an antique sextant that they were planning on learning how to use along the way, and a State Farm Road Atlas. Twisted into this humorous adventure is another story, with a more solemn theme, about their eccentric and creative Uncle Billy, whose dream it was, originally, to go on this sailing adventure. As you will discover, he didn't end up living his dream.

3 out of 5 stars The Voyage of the Maxed Out.......2003-09-03

Brian Nold's first book, The Voyage of the Maxed Out, is a wonderful read. The notion of two brothers traveling from mid-Missouri all the way to Key West in a 17 ft. sail boat with a tiny engine is very adventurous ... if not a little crazy. Nold does a nice job of weaving in the personal story of an uncle who influenced his life along with the ride he and his brother experienced following the Great Flood of 1993.

I highly recommend the book to anyone who enjoys a good page-turning account of a real life adventure. While Nold, a former corporate pilot, sometimes lacks literary polish ... he more than makes up for that with an incredible tale that keeps the reader turning pages.

Everyone I know who has read the book makes the same comment. It's simply hard to put down. Readers want to know how the voyage ends and successfully keeping the reader engaged is a talent many seasoned writers struggle to achieve.

Nold's enthusiasm shines through and makes reading The Voyage of the Maxed Out a very worthwhile experience.

5 out of 5 stars Dave and Brian Nold are NUTS!.......2003-06-11

This book will have you gripping your armchair with white knuckles when your not laughing your (beep) off! Brian and David Nold are NUTS!

5 out of 5 stars If it weren't for the pictures, you wouldn't believe it!.......2003-06-02

If you're looking for a fantastic real-life adventure, here it is! Brian describes a trip that 99.9% of us would wisely choose not to make; however, his narration had me both laughing out loud and gasping with disbelief. His account of the more dangerous parts of the journey will have you questioning his sanity while his insights into self and his observations on society will assure he is quite sane. His story is fun and scary -- proof that the truth is better than fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Who would ever dream?.......2003-06-01

Brian lives out his Uncle Billy's "crazy" idea of of going down the Mississippi and Missouri rivers to the Gulf of Mexico and on to Key West, Florida. His story is more than some boat trip. Taking place right after the Great Flood of 1993, the description of the towns and land they stop at or pass by are preserved in words that you can picture. A book that can be passed thru the generations for its historical accounting. Brian's insight into the economic and cultural differences come alive with all the different characters they encounter. He expresses his feelings about all his characters and uses humor to narrow the gap of human judgement to a common bond that the reader understands.
As you read about his adventure with his brother Dave, you will bust up laughing at his humility!
Though there is a sadness surrounding Uncle Billy, the reader is enlightened by the fact that Brian was encouraged by and lived Uncle Billy's dream and his own dream to write the book.
A must read for anyone who dreams of living their dream!

5 out of 5 stars An Adventureful Escape.......2003-05-27

What a great way to share a descriptive adventure, without the risk involved, and incorporate a down-to-earth look at various sides of life along the way. Brian lets the reader inside family relationships and touches on many issues in U. S. culture, such as gangs, prejudice and mental illness, as he and his brother David traverse some challenging waterways in minimal equipment. From acquiring the "Maxed Out" to the daring final leg of the voyage across the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico, Brian and David became resourceful out of necessity, coping with the many adversities that their adventure embraced. This book is an enjoyable, absorbing, easy read. I am recommending the book to my teenage grandson as well as to anyone who would like an adventureful escape.
