5 out of 5 stars Charming!.......2007-09-23

I bought this book after watching the movie abotu the life of Beatrix Potter. The stories are so charming ! my daughter reads a little bit everyday and she just cannot get enough of the illustrations. It is a perfect way of getting some extra vocabulary in on a daily basis.

5 out of 5 stars Love the Beatrix Potter book.......2007-08-28

You know I saw that movie Ms. Potter and learned all about Peter Rabbit and the other characters. I was so enchanted with the movie that I had to buy the book. It was very lovely to see them all bound in one beautiful book with a lovely book sleeve--- Very NICE!! This would make a wonderful gift for a new baby or a special Easter gift.

5 out of 5 stars Bedtime reading turned into morningtime reading, too!.......2007-08-25

I purchased this single book collection of Beatrix Potter stories because our oldest, aged four, loves Peter Rabbit. We had planned to read one story per evening before bed but the great writing style and pictures of Ms. Potter so grabbed our four year old's attention that we ended up reading one at bed, at rising in the morning and before nap time. Even my husband would drop what he was busy with to come and listen to storytime! The adventures and the names Ms Potter came up with are charming and fun to say. One does have to know some Engligh terms and be able to explain those vocabulary on the quick but it sure is fun to hear your child increase his vocabulary with the neighbor kids! We have certainly gotten a hoot out of the appropriate word usage he has picked up from these stories and then will explain to his friends to help "teach" them. We've read through this book many times to our delight.

4 out of 5 stars HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSON.......2007-08-06

MY GRANDKIDS WILL ENJOY THIS AS MUCH AS I DID AS A CHILD WHEN MY MOM READ TO ME. IT HAS ALL HIS WRITINGS.

1 out of 5 stars Andersen deserves better.......2007-03-10

It is just sad that publishers like this one are opportunistic and know that just because Andersen is on the cover the book will sell. The translations are rickety and unreadable. And the quality of the book is disappointing. I immediately resold mine and bought another, far superior, volume. Don't get taken for a ride.

5 out of 5 stars This book is for adults as much as children.......2006-10-27

Hans Chrisitian Andersen's fairy tales are incomparable. They have a level of depth absent in any other collection of fairy tales including the Grimm Brothers, Arabian nights etc...He amalgmates magic and reality and seals them in beautiful poetic expression. You will feel pain and love, rejection and hope, despair and persistence. The characters and images are sad yet impeccable. The tales are vivaciously symbolic of your dreams and reality. My favorite tales are The Red Shoes and The Little Mermaid(which is way different from Disney's version). They are a must-read.

5 out of 5 stars Not for kids.......2006-07-09

I first read HCA when I was about 8 and I remember being baffled at their deviation from the standard "fairy tale" formula. They stayed with me however.
I bought this edition because I wanted to explore more of his work and I am very glad I did. I have finished about 3/4ths of this volulme and the richness, satire, obersvation, depth, humor and relevance of the themes continue to awe me. It's not a book for children but for those adults who want to go on adventures with a master storyteller.

5 out of 5 stars Every one should read.......2006-02-25

This is the perfect gift for a child or adult of any age who enjoys reading.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

For almost two centuries, the stories of magic and myth gathered by the Brothers Grimm have been part of the way children—and adults—learn about the vagaries of the real world. Cinderella, Rapunzel, Snow-White, Hänsel and Gretel, Little Red-Cap (a.k.a. Little Red Riding Hood), and Briar-Rose (a.k.a. Sleeping Beauty) are only a few of more than 200 enchanting characters included here. Lyrically translated and beautifully illustrated, the tales are presented just as Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm originally set them down: bold, primal, just frightening enough, and endlessly engaging.

Customer Reviews:

"The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales" comprises all of the Grimm brother's dark and eerie tales. I recommend this book to all who enjoy endings that are not always happy.

this book is more intended for adults or older children not 5 or 6 year olds there's no pictures which all children love pictures the stories are old and very boring.the book is not intended for youngters.

5 out of 5 stars Grimm's grim fairy tales.......2007-02-17

I read Grimm's Fairy Tales when I was about 7 years old, if not younger. This was one of my favorite books as a child, and I have not been traumatized by the tales in the least. However, if you have an extremely sensitive child that is easily frightened, perhaps you may want to find a different book. For the average child, I think it is a very good read, and it's fun to see the original versions of stories they most likely are already familiar with such as Hansel and Gretel, Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and many more.

1 out of 5 stars unbelievably bad.......2005-12-09

this wasn't the book version i bought, but i bought a very complete version of grimm's fairy tales because i wanted to read fairy tales like i had earlier in my life. now i realize i was probably reading a hans christian anderson book before - translation, SOMEONE WHO COULD WRITE A STORY. the grimm's fairy tales were so bad, i was shocked.. i know these people lived in an earlier century, but the writing was on a third grade level, the morals were non-existent and the stories were just BAD. i know they come from an earlier century, maybe when people were less educated, but that's no excuse for ridiculously bad stories that are written horribly. i don't know what kind of drugs everyone is using to think that grimm's fairy tales are worth reading, but i'm here to tell the truth, they're beyond bad. i would type an example of the worst story i read, but i can't because i threw the book away! i can't wait to get a hans christian anderson book and read some real, interesting fairy tales that were written well.

4 out of 5 stars The Complete Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales, Deluxe Edition (Literary Classics).......2007-09-10

Excellent edition, however I had hoped to receive one with colour plates rather than the black and white plates. This was my only disappointment. The book was luxuriously bound and beautifully put together. All the stories are there, and it is funny how ones memories can play tricks as I thought the description in the story The Tinder Box described one of the dogs as having 'eyes like saucers' when the book texted 'eyes like teacups' or 'eyes like towers'. I am in no position to argue, but the story still remains magical.

Worth having this in any serious book collection, but as the pages are quite fragile I would suggest avoiding letting children having free run of this in case it gets damaged, perhaps until they are at least about 8 with advanced reading capabilities.

5 out of 5 stars Very Nice........2007-06-27

The Complete Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales, Deluxe Edition is a very nice book. Of course the fairy tales that we all love are in the book, but the book itself is pretty. I am very happy with it.

4 out of 5 stars A good Book.......2007-03-09

This is a good book, I only wish that the pages were thicker and that the stories were spaced in a more, well, spacious way. the space between the end of one story and the begining of the next is only as big as a few lines. the type is also really small. None of this is really a problem, I understand that if they made the print larger, the spacing between stories larger, and made the pages thicker the book would probably weight 25lbs...and that would make reading it difficult wouldn't it? I am really glad that I got it.

4 out of 5 stars Good quality.......2007-03-07

See my customer images.

The pages have gold-leafed edges, and there is a ribbon bookmark. There is also some metallic on the cover, and the illustrations on the inside are great. I have not read the text (giving it as a gift for a new baby), but the type is easy to read. The paper is of the super-thin Norton Anthology/Bible variety (hence the 4 stars), but anything thicker would make the book large and heavy, so understood. That said, read it to your kids, but don't let them play with it too hard or you'll probably end up with torn pages. The price of this book is great though, for a decent quality hardback that is a full collection.

2 out of 5 stars "Fairy Books".......2007-01-20

I was very happy to find a book that contained all the "Fairy Books". However, the printing is so small you need a magnifying glass to read it. It is also very difficult to find the fairy tale you want because there is no index. If I had to do it over again I would buy the books individually, it is worth the investment

1 out of 5 stars reads like a phone book.......2007-01-13

The format of this book is AWFUL- as unattractive as you could possibly imagine and on fairly cheap paper as well. Had I known it would be as bad as it was I would never have bought it.

1 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE. Do NOT buy this book........2006-11-04

I was so excited to see that all of the "color book" fairy tale collections were gathered in one place. When I received the book I was VERY disappointed. No thought was given this volume, from the inappropriate cover image (stock photography of a rainforest frog?) to the pages within : no illustrations, no consideration given to the needs of the reader at all (just dense columns of small type intended solely to minimize the number of pages.) Poorly bound. All of which combine to remove any pleasure from reading these delightful stories.

Look for the individual colored books .... they're worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars Lot of value for the money.......2006-08-10

If you want all of Andrew Lang's stories in a convenient format this is for you. Ideal for the busy parent who wants to read a story a night or for the voracious child reader, for whom the small print is not problem. It may not be fancy but it's tremendous value.

2 out of 5 stars Content outstanding; presentation poor.......2006-08-10

Having read Lang's Fairy stories when I was younger, I was truly looking forward to receiving this volume. To say the least, I was very dissappointed when I received it. How does this book fail? Let me count the ways;

1) The beautiful illustrations that I remember so well, are gone. There is not one illustration in the entire volume.

2) The Table of Contents is sorely lacking. The individual stories are not listed; only the books. Trying to find a specific story is challenging, to say the least. An index would have been helpful.

3) The print is SO tiny, that severe eye-strain is a definite probability.

4) What is with the tree frog on the cover?

My suggestion is, if you wish to read Lang's Fairy Book series, buy them individually. They are truly wonderful stories, but this volume is NOT the way to proceed. Buying them individually will assuredly cost more, but it will be well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars Christianity and Fun!.......2002-07-25

I think a lot of children may think of being Christian as something imposed on them--having to go to church, having to follow rules. This book shows them that God can be a source of strength in bad times and that being a Christian can be a joyful, fun thing. Ben, Helena and the children live in a time when being a Christian was dangerous, but they bravely confront their oppressors and draw strength from the stories of Jesus. The adventure and humor in this book make it accessable even to children who are not Christian and to old fogies like me!

4 out of 5 stars i likey da booky.......2007-07-16

although the book is pretty long, there were a lot of stories that kept me interested. i always wanted to find out the true version of all my childhood fairy tales like cinderella, the frog prince, rapunzel, and so much more. my favorite of them all had to be "The Youth Who Could Not Shiver and Shake," that story was scary, funny, as well as amusing. overall the book, The Complete Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales, was and old time classic that could never be forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars Good 'ol days.......2007-05-23

This book was amazing. It's nice to see the original tales in all their glory, not the wussed out pansy versions of today. Parents, if you TRULY love your children buy them this book now.

5 out of 5 stars great.......2007-05-16

this book is amazing, and no home library should be without it. it's also delivered in great condition.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the BEST.......2007-04-12

These are the stories in their true non-Disneyfied forms. A great collection, that I'd hold up against any other.

Book Description

Eight Punjabi tales, five from Armenia, 16 others. An enchanting world of flying dragons, ogres, fairies, and princes transformed into white foxes. 50 illustrations.

Download Description

A unique collection of 29 fairy tales edited by Andrew Lang. These stories, not so well-known and yet so beautifully told, are derived from Turkey, India, Denmark and others. Read about the enchanted lovers in "The Blue Parrot", the self-sacrificing love of "Little King Loc", the bunniah's comic attempt in cheating a farmer in "A Long-Bow Story", the capable wife who transforms her husband to a hero in "Samba the Coward", a gutsy princess who makes her own fortune in "Kupti and Imani", and the nightingale's stories in "The Silent Princess". A highly desirable volume in the collector's Fairy Cabinet.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good read for the seekers of more exotic fairy tales.........2007-02-26

This is not an early childhood fairytale collection. It's language is a little obscure(stylistically it is from the Victorian era so there are some peculiar language expressions which an average reader might not be familiar with)but the stories are exiting and unfamiliar.
I would say that this reading will be a wonderful trip for anyone who loves storytelling. Plan to read along when buying this book for a younger audience.

5 out of 5 stars Classic, Quirky, and Unique all in one!.......2007-02-04

This book is an excellent collection. The tales in here are so great, they are so unique and have the quirkyness of old fairytales. This book is an old publication and the illustrations are great although black and white, they are drawn so well. This is a great addition to any fairytale or folktale collector!

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Collection!.......2000-06-27

"The Olive Fairy Book" has got to be one of Andrew Lang's best. In this volume, he strays from the more commonly known tales, and instead publishes a collection of exotic tales from Muslim/Hindu countries. I've never heard many of the PLOTS before, and we all know that many fairy tales share common plots. These tales are surprisingly different, and delightfully enjoyable. Anyone who is tired of the traditional Europeon tales that, while still fantastic, are just too well known, this book is a wonderful addition to anyone who enjoys folklore. The pictures are amazing, too.

5 out of 5 stars One of Lang's Best Collections.......2000-06-20

This has got to be one of my favorites of Lang's color collection. "The Olive Fairy Book" contains tales mainly from the Hindu/Muslim countries, but also has a good amount from Anatole France and Denmark. These are the lesser known tales and fables that are certainly worth a read. They're fantastic! The drawings are beautiful, too. Many people only recognize the European tales, and should know of the fairy tales of other cultures. They are rich, beautiful, and full of creatures and places unheardof in Celtic tales.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful for children and adults.......2000-04-08

This book of fairy tales, coming from Turkey, India, Denmark, Armenia, and the Sudan, opens you up to an entirely different culture and I enjoyed every page. I would also suggest reading this to children just as every fairy tale book to open them up to ideas of other ways of life (and also allow their imagination to run wild!) The drawings are also beautiful and fit the book perfectly.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Remember this is book is geared for 9-12 yr olds.......2006-11-23

It was my fault I did not pay attention to the reader age group 9-12yrs. I thought this book would have more details in the stories such as in the real Cinderella it mentions that the evil step sister had to cut parts of their feet to fit into the glass slipper, the prince notices the blood and then asked Cinderella the chamber maid to try on the slipper. This is never mentioned in this version. Of course I understand this is geared for children, and I was looking for the adult, true translation, version. The same for the Bluebeard story, looks like I will be returning my copy. Hopefully a younger person can find some use for this book.

5 out of 5 stars enchanting.......2005-08-17

Great to have well designed book, with interesting illustrations and good translations. Very user-friendly book.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Charles Perrault.......2005-08-13

This is a complete collection of the fairy tales collected by Charles Perrault, the heart and soul of European fairy tales. Beautiful illustrations, easy to read text, highly recommended. These are original versions, without the Disney "variations."

4 out of 5 stars A KEEPSAKE FOR A YOUNG READER'S LIBRARY.......2005-05-04

Who can resist a fairy tale? This beautifully rendered edition includes such timeless classics as "Little Red Riding Hood," "Cinderella" and "Sleeping Beauty."

All eleven of Perault's tales are enchantingly illustrated in ripe watercolors - never has Red Riding Hood's grandmother's cottage looked so venerably aged or forbidding.

A handsome volume to be treasured.

4 out of 5 stars Charles Perrault and nameless women.......2004-04-27

Charles Perrault has written many great fairy tales that we all know and love. Though Perrault's brilliance has made him popular through writing, he reinforces an oppressive, patriarchal ideology. The story of "Bluebeard" which is found in his collection, give women no moral. Perrault creates a man that wants complete control over his wives, and then creates a wife that believes in the old customs in doing everything her husband says. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but Perrault gives this women who is tied down with marriage and the burden of a housewife no name. She is only referred to as "she" and "her" throughout the fairy tale.
Perrault's stories are great for fairy tale lovers, but if you have any feelings towards giving women their own freedom, then maybe his fairy tales aren't for you.
