Good for review, but not complete.......2006-09-17
My experience with First-Aid books has generally been very positive. I've used the series during my studies for all my USMLE steps, and they've been very helful.
First Aid for the Pediatric Boards will not disappoint. It is well written, with a logical structure and a concise nature. However, in an effort to maintain conciseness, I feel some pertinent information has been left out.
This book is best used by people who study over a long period - and then you will have an opportunity to write your notes along the margins (which are, by the way, nice and spacious). This will turn this book into the perfect read for the two weeks prior to the exam.
If you use this book as your sole studying source, you might pass - but only if you memorize the book entirely. Your volume of information will be hovering along the "just-enough" level and you will not afford losing a single question.
Good luck to all of us!

Book Description
The great Russian psychologist L. S. Vygotsky has long been recognized as a pioneer in developmental psychology. But somewhat ironically, his theory of development has never been well understood in the West. Mind in Society should correct much of this misunderstanding. Carefully edited by a group of outstanding Vygotsky scholars, the book presents a unique selection of Vygotsky's important essays, most of which have previously been unavailable in English.
The Vygotsky who emerges from these pages can no longer be glibly included among the neobehaviorists. In these essays he outlines a dialectical-materialist theory of cognitive development that anticipates much recent work in American social science. The mind, Vygotsky argues, cannot be understood in isolation from the surrounding society. Man is the only animal who uses tools to alter his own inner world as well as the world around him. From the handkerchief knotted as a simple mnemonic device to the complexities of symbolic language, society provides the individual with technology that can be used to shape the private processes of mind. In Mind in Society Vygotsky applies this theoretical framework to the development of perception, attention, memory, language, and play, and he examines its implications for education. The result is a remarkably interesting book that is bound to renew Vygotsky's relevance to modem psychological thought.

Vygotsky, Mind in Society.......2005-08-12
This is a good start to understanding the researh and theories of Lev Vygotsky.
A MUST READ for parents, preschool through elem educators........2002-03-23
While the book is full of theory that might discourage someone from reading it, it has an absolutly fantastic practical implacation worth the effort! The second half of this book, "Educational Implications" discusses the Zone of Proximal Development. Learning about this "Zone" plus the discussion regarding how children learn to read and write, tells those of us who really want to help children learn, ways to set-up an environment and activities to do it!!
Don't let the theory scare you away, this is a MUST READ!
Socio-historical psychology.......1999-07-24
This is one of the earliest and still one of the best introductions to socio-historical psychology, the study of how individual human intelligence develops in interaction with people and the environment. In concert with many contemporary approaches in cognitive science today, Lev Vygotsky, A.R. Luria and A.N. Leontiev argued that human intelligence is characteristically mediated through objects and social activity. Humans think through tools. Talking to oneself, for example, is not an irrelevant activity. Putting one's actions into speech is a way of focusing one's consciousness on the problem. This kind of speech is not pointless, but rather a cognitive tool that gives one a greater awareness of one's own actions and makes it easier to modify these actions--a point that Vygotsky proved with research on how children solved problems. Much of human activity involves making use of tools, signs, and activities, the kinetic melodies of action and conceptualization that make us smart, and through which we are able to accomplish the uniquely human feats of complex intellectual action. This is an excellent place to begin studying Vygotsky and activity theory. If you like this you will also like A.R. Luria's *The Making of Mind*, and the classics *The Man With A Shattered World* and *The Mind of a Mnemonist*, the books that inspired Oliver Sacks' writing.

one of our current favorites.......2007-10-03
This, along with Something Special for Me have been top picks for our 3 1/2 year old for the last few months. She asks for them over and over. I love how this book tells a simple story yet illustrates wonderful family values without being preachy. I imagine this will be in the regular rotation at our house for years to come.
Loved it.......2007-05-11
THis is a book that I and my students thoroughly enjoyed. I love teh emphasis on hardwork and perseverance. Most children can relate to the notion of saving money to purchase something they really want to have. Written from the perspective of the child makes the story easy for children to identify with. The notion of harwork and perseverance is weaved through out the story. From the mother's long hours at the diner to the family's year of saving change in a jar. The Coldecott-winning illustrations allow the reader to feel the emotions the little girl is feeling and correspond beautifully with the text. The cover of the book is an outsiders view of the diner where the little girl's mother works. Ths vantage point lends to the perspective from which the story is told. I feel this is a story that can transcend time. There will always be the need for hard work and perseverance. There will always be hard times one has to overcome. The notion of earning and valuing material pocessions can cross all cultures.
mom and grandma.......2007-03-13
A beautiful book, visually and story-wise. My children loved it, I loved it and now the grandchildren love it. It has drama and kindness and an appreciation for small things that make life rich.
Another missing Dad.......2007-01-16
Where's the father in this story? With all the unfortunate divorcing going on in this world, I plan to inundate my child with stories about happy families with both a mom and a dad. If it doesn't work out for him when he grows up and gets married, at least I can say I tried my best. I'm tired of forcing the feminist agenda on our kids. They need to know that not having a GOOD husband/father at home is not a good thing. Also, I thought the book was boring and the chair was ugly.
A great book for kids.......2006-09-29
I recently bought this book for my 7-year-old, and was really impressed by both the story and the beautiful illustrations. I felt it was a good story for my daughter to read as it told how the young girl, her mother and grandmother survived a fire that destroyed their home and built a life for themselves afterward. The reward to being able to buy a comfortable chair after all their hard work and savings drives home the point of how much we have and how little we may sometimes appreciate it.

Book Description
Couples who know how to give each other extreme intimate pleasure enjoy plenty of other benefits, including reduced stress and increased closeness. In this hands-on guide to getting it right, behavioral scientists Steve and Vera Bodansky describe how to give and receive remarkable orgasms, taking the experience of sex to a new level of enjoyment. Focusing primarily on women but addressing the needs of men as well, they cover anatomy in detail, address inhibitions and fears, suggest useful exercises, recommend the best positions, and most of all offer insightful advice for every technique covered. While the authors include emotional and psychological components of a relationship, they focus on how and where to touch a partner to produce the most pleasure. No matter how long a couple has been together, it's never too late - or too early - to greatly enhance sexual response.
Customer Reviews:
almost too much to handle.......2006-05-23
Forgive me if this review is incoherent but since mastering the techniques in this book I have been either in the midst of a massively explosive shooting forth of love snot from my lust cannon or recuperating in a pile of my own sweat in a post orgasmic stupor. This book will make you spurt more than a knight in a monty python dismemberment scene. I really can't speak for your lover, as my senses have been so overwhelmed by the intensity of my orgasms that I can't really tell where I am or what's going on or who is gasping for air under the weight of my wang.....
This book was great! For me!
Informative but the Title Is Misleading.......2005-02-01
On page one, Dr. Steve Bodansky says that his first words to his wife were, "My name is Steve, and I'd love to do you."
Now don't anyone tell me Steve wasn't trying to make people like me laugh just so he could say, "Hey, man, if you think that's funny it's only because you're out of harmony with your own sexuality." I'm not complaining though. If that's the attitude it takes to write a 200-page book on the details of sex that few people ever talk about but everyone wishes they knew, so be it. I don't care who you are, you will learn some helpful things from this book. It explains in detail the purpose and function of all those parts of the genitalia that leave most members of the opposite sex (whatever that happens to be) kind of confused.
The book's one major flaw is that the authors define orgasm to mean any heightened state of sexual arousal, not just climax. So they make it sound like they have discovered some forbidden secret when they claim orgasms can last for hours, but all they really mean is that it is possible to stay turned on for a really long time. The term "Extended Massive Orgasm" is just a marketing gimic, but the book is still very worthwhile.
I'm not sure how useful gays or lesbians will find this book, since its main value is in helping people understand how the other sex's plumbing system works.
Real "HOW-TO" Not a thin read for the toliet or airplane!.......2004-02-28
A Gentleman's take on EMO:
Every book has negative reviews. But the ones in here for this book must come from people who definitely did NOT READ THE BOOK!
If you are looking for a smut book, this is not it. If you are looking for some magical gimmick, there are none in life.
The Bodansky's put out their first book on ESO, (now EMO), back in the early 80s. I thank god for it! Otherwise I would have never known all these years what a couple could earn if they are willing to learn. It is so sad that so few have any idea what Great Sex really means.
This is not a book that is going to give you some quick gimmicks to quick orgasms; or some 'new position' that will light you on fire. (It's so funny to hear when some people equate the mystery of great sex to some mystery position).
One caveat: If your partner isn't likely to try something like this, you'll simply need to upgrade to a newer and more versatile model. For the most part, the benefits of this book require the full participation of both parties, (not one).
In summary: This book goes into the physiology & psychology of intimacy, (trust building exercises to how to control and enhance the partners level of arousal). This newer edition expands greatly on the first!
If only this book was distributed like books of faith, most of our world's problems and pains would be gone.
Not for a guy to know.......2004-01-23
Only about female self-stimulation!
Women Empowerment.......2003-10-29
This book is an instrumental source towards female liberation in the greatest sense. The Bodanskys crumble patriarchy with their emphasis on female pleasure and orgasm. Pleasure is a broad term that transfers from the bedroom to positively influence every other aspect of life. It teaches people in a very compassionate and empathetic manner to love yourself first, communicate and live from and out of your truest desires...which are all possible! Let's leave the puritanical work ethic behind--why not work and live life with joy, PLEASURE, and lots and lots of love! Who could ask for anything more--well perhaps abundance, which the Bondanskys are also no shame about--lots and lots of orgasms or just one long one and lots and lots of pleasure! Hey, time to take our pleasure seriously (in a fun sort of way). This not only boosts women's moral, confidence, and feelings, but also that of men--as they say, when men center their attention on female pleasure, women take men to places they never ever could have gone alone! Althoug this book, techniques they share, and the beliefs they purport are critical to female liberation, there is no second guessing that when women are free, men and children as well as society/governments also receive the flow of excitment and joy that women are born to live from and express! Enjoy! Let's change society, relationships, ourselves by giving ourselves a chance to experience joy--Men are you along for the ride? You'll miss out if you aren't...and we don't want that to happen, now do we.

Book Description
From the bestselling author of A Man Called Intrepid comes the first and only biography of Vera Atkins, of whom James Bond creator Ian Fleming said, "In the real world of spies, Vera Atkins was the boss." Vera Atkins was an attractive young woman with smoky eyes and lustrous black hair. She belonged to a wealthy family and dined with ambassadors and kings. She could have been a socialite, but in the cataclysmic days of World War II, Vera Atkins became Great Britain's spymistress.
Customer Reviews:
Publishing farce.......2007-09-19
The author of Spymistress states that Vera Atkins had "lustrous black hair" whereas in fact she was a blue-eyed blonde, as anyone who ever met her could have told him.
If the author cannot get the colour of his subject's hair right it is hardly surprising that much of the rest of the book turns out to be nonsense too. The fantasies woven here have no interest. The author trivialises a great woman's life story. He does so in the knowledge that the dead cannot answer back.
The true story of Vera Atkins's life is far more compelling than anything in this book. I know this because I spent five years researching her extraordinary story across the world. I interviewed her at length before she died and I had sole access to her archive.
I am writing this review not to promote my own book but to defend Vera's integrity. This false "biography" desecrates the memory of a remarkable woman, misses the real story entirely, and brings the American publishing industry into disrepute. In short, it is a publishing farce.

Necessity for Peds Nursing students.......2007-04-04
This book really helps nursing students get through their peds rotation. All the essential lecture topics for peds are covered. Includes CD with questions, very useful!
Great resource.......2007-01-10
I am a senior nursing student working towards my BSN. This book helped me out a great deal. Sometimes textbooks go on and on about certain topics instead of giving you the basics (getting to the point). This book breaks pediatric nursing down to the science. It gives you the information without all the unnecessary mumbo-jumbo. This book is a great aid when reading your text or during lecture. I received a B (88%) out of my pediatric nursing course just from studing this book 90% of the time. Quiet as kept, a lot of nursing professors take their information and exam questions from reference books. Trust me, its well worth the purchase!!

Book Description
In this fully illustrated book by sex workshop leaders Steve and Vera Bodansky, readers delve deeper than ever before into the actual techniques for prolonged orgasm. Written for men and women, straight and gay, the book graphically, playfully, and sensually discusses the best hand and body positions, the enticements of teasing and begging, and the subtle intricacies of peaking and coming down. It also reveals little-known erogenous zones, giving specific information on the sensitivity of each area. While Extended Massive Orgasm focused on female pleasure, the authors have devoted 50 percent of this book to techniques for men. The book includes a Q&A section along with the extensive drawings and photographs.
Customer Reviews:
A Must-Have Reference Book.......2007-08-29
When you add it all together: the illustrations, the genius of Drs. Steve and Vera Bodanky and what they have to say, and the ease with which you can learn about and practice what they teach about how to give more pleasure, this book is a sure-fire win! Run, don't walk, to buy this book for your permanent reference library.
impressive.......2006-08-12
This is an amazing book. I have taken workshops in this area before and paid a lot of money for them; and the illustrated guide makes it accessible to anyone for only a few dollars. With the great illustrations that show you exactly how to hold your hand and how to sit and specific instructions on what to do and how to talk to your partner when having sex, it makes a difficult subject seem so functional and fun. The book takes you from step one on teasing and lubricating to really advanced techniques such as extending the peaks and how to insert with your second hand that i did not know before. There is no fat here only solid meat. The book does not go into detail discussing interecourse or oral sex but the authors explain why and if you want a book on intercourse then look elsewhere but if you want a book on great techniques and insights and expertise in creating pleasure then buy it.
it really works.......2006-07-30
i am writing this review because this book and the work of the Bodanskys has made a huge difference in my life. Although many of the reviews are positive I do not understand some of the negative ones that dismiss this book as fluff etc. as the information is the most advanced and useful out there. These people obviously never did the work that is necessary to change their limited sex lives. Using ones hands sexually is obviously not the only way but to create pleasure but to learn how to use them properly and sensually takes time and will benefit all of one's sexual activities. i am forever grateful for having received this knowledge.
Full of Fluff.......2006-07-22
This is a great book to buy anyone first learning about sex, but if you are looking to further your relationship, this is not the book.
The entire book could have been written in 10 pages, but the authors found a way to fill over 225 pages with fluff.
If you are looking for something to expand your horizon, read Clint Arthur.
rolls royce of sex books.......2006-06-15
the illustrated guide to extended massive orgasm is by far the best sex book that i have ever read. It is filled with useful information such as how to seduce your partner into bed, and what to do with them to give them the most explosive and fantastic time once you get there. I really loved this book, the illustrations are also terrific,to the point, and very professional and this book is a classic.

Well worth the $.......2007-01-10
This is a great reference book especially if you are a nursing student. This book is STRAIGHT to the point. The pre and posttest questions are great. In this edition the questions are formatted to give nursing students like myself, pratice with the new NCLEX format. The CD-ROM gives you additional practice questions and it links you to the internet for even more practice questions. Overall, this is a great reference.
Excellent Text.......2006-10-22
I honestly would not have passed my OB rotation without this book.
This text explained the concepts and vital details of maternal/newborn nursing. By only reading and in some cases answering the chapter questions, my understanding of this subject increased to the point that I went from below passing grades to a star of the class. This should be a required book at my college, and I;m sure that it would be helpful in any program.
Another good book from hogans.......2006-09-29
So i found out in april this book was coming out on August 1, 2006, and i kept checking to get my copy. dates got pushed to Aug. 25, then sept 6, then finally, it came out on Sept 20. do not like the fact that it did not come out the time predicted but stuff like this happens.
Pros:
Good content like the old edition. nclex pointers which are no longer represented by the nclex word but by something else (nothing fancy).
This edition provides pre and post test like the other edition EXCEPT in addition to giving the rationale, it also gives a test-taking strategy to help with answering the question and choosing the right answer. (really good strategies if you learn them)
This one follows the current nclex test plan in that it contains alternate format questions AS WELL AS diagrams or whatever you call it where you indicate the answer.
The nursing notes that comes with this has the same content as the other one except its of a better quality.
It has an audio glossary on the CD and the terminoly on the CD is matching so it is quite interactive.
I got my library to purchase this book while waiting for this new edition to come out, checked it out a few times and then someone stole it from the reserve desk so i did not get soo much into the content of the old one though i glanced through most parts of it. Hence, i can say this one has nicely formated tables,(in color, may i add) and various diagrams.
The questions are a little harder but i did them before reading the content so i know i'll find the answers in it. (i'm only answering based on information i've learned from other review books such as saunders, nsna, lippincott etc). did well on those tests but hogan has a lot more PERTINENT information based from seing everything i got wrong in the content.
THE NEUTRAL THAT COULD HAVE BEEN MADE BETTER
There is no online thing with an access code this time which is not bad in the sense that just as the online content associated with the other editions had a pretest, 10 practice nclex, 20 exam questions and the 10 ? postest, the CD has the prestest, postest and 30 practice questions so that comes out to the same 50 questions that would have been online. Good part is you get alternate format with the 30 questions as well.
It sucks that the same pre and post tests in the book are the same on the CD-ROM just like it was on the last edition.
I did the practice questions of chapter one on the last edition and so far, one of the questions is the same. But there are some new questions.
The fact that it says 700 bonus questions is quite misleading cuz only 30 of those questions per chapter are bonus. the remaining 20 are the same pre- and post-test in the book.
PART THAT SUCKS: THE CONS
The CD requires quick"bloody"time. I HATE QUICK TIME! (just not an apple person that's all- nothing crazy). The CDs i have had with my old hogan's did not require me to install anything. the little upside is that it allows you to do the interactive termilogy matching.
So, based on content, i give this book a 5 because of good info, great ?s and the test taking strategies which is helpful. The fact that the same pre and post tests are on the CD INSTEAD of new questions kinda sucks but it was the same with the old edition. Needing quicktime for the CD just makes me nauseas (joking). Considering i personally do like quicktime so based on the little cons, overall a 4. there's room for improvement at least with replacing the post and pre test with new questions to the CD . i'm sure most ppl can do with quicktime.
SO CONTENTWISE and helping you study 4 tests and NCLEX, I'LL SAY 5.
If you were expecting the 700 bonus questions not to include the same pre and post test, and you also hate quick time, then you'll agree a 4.5 overall.
I just got this book today. amazon delivered as promised and if i find any new things, i'll add it. If you are looking for a good review book, I SAY GET THIS BOOK cuz it sure is better than the old edition and the hogan series have helped me make A's in my nursing classes (i'm talking older editions) so I'm sure this edition would do better since it includes good test taking strategies with the material. i know people who used the older edition for maternity and scored excellent on their HESI as well as make their A's.
This book is well written and well edited and it is a great resource for nursing students. It's a great improvement from the old edition and it's WORTH every single penny. Quicktime or not, i still LOVE IT.

Veronica Vera is an artist, sex activist, and founder of the world's first cross-dressing academy, a truly fabulous institution that has been serving the unique educational needs of "boys who want to be girls" since 1992. Serving more than 100 students a year at her New York City campus, Miss Vera offers courses in makeup application, how to walk in high heels, etiquette for budding princesses, sex education, and, of course, getting frocked. More importantly, she teaches each member of her largely heterosexual male clientele to develop his inner femme and to "take the insights of his femmeself and integrate them into his male persona."
Miss Vera's Finishing School for Boys Who Want to Be Girls is an informative textbook for readers who want practical advice about all things femme (complete with illustrations and homework assignments). It includes an anecdotal "herstory" of Miss Vera's experiences as a pleasure activist and gender educator and a delightful document of the transformation of the academy's students as they prance toward "gender euphoria" in high heels and glimmering tiaras. This is an indispensable guide for emerging femmes of all ages, sexes, and sexual orientations, as well as an insightful, humorous, and sassy work sure to interest all devotees of gender studies. --Julia Steinmetz
Book Description
It is estimated that three to five percent of the adult male population of the United States feels the need, at least occasionally, to dress in women's clothing. Judging from enrollment at her academy, Miss Vera would say that figure is low.
Veronica Vera founded Miss Vera's Finishing School for Boys Who Want to Be Girls in 1992 and started a gender revolution. Working from the pink palace of the Academy's intimate Manhattan campus, she has helped hundreds of students embrace and master Venus Envy through her expert instruction in the arts of dressing up, making up, going out, and acting like a lady. In her new book, she shares her priceless wisdom with the world.
With sparkling wit and dazzling insight, Miss V gives us the 411 on body hair, foundation garments, make-up, and dressing, as well as offering invaluable advice on Creating a Herstory (finding the real life story of the femmeself within) speech, manners, walking in high heels, and--that biggest step of all--going out in the real world all dressed up. Amply illustrated and filled with the real stories of students and graduates, Miss Vera's Finishing School also offers a fascinating history of how the Academy came to be, as well as Miss Vera's own incisive gender manifesto.
"As we step boldly toward the new millennium, many more of us will be doing it in high heels," says Veronica Vera. In Miss Vera's Finishing School for Boys Who Want to Be Girls, she proves conclusively that, after a long day in wingtips, there's nothing like slipping into a pair of spiked heels.

Essential guide/information for CD's and their SO's.......2007-08-23
Highly recommended...informative and amusing, but sensitive to the particular issues/questions of the TV or CD and their partners and families...
Fun read, but don't expect to learn anything........2007-06-21
It is fun to read, it is interesting. But as far as explaining anything about how to dress femme, you won't learn from it.
When I first picked up the book at a glbt store, I was excited and could not wait to read it. About 1/2 way thru the book, I felt stupid for having paid $15 for it.
I give it 3 stars cause like I said - it was entertaining. BUT, at the time, I was looking to learn to dress, not be entertained by some advertisement for a school that one weekend costs more than I make in a month. This book is like the movie dumb and dumber, it is entertaining, but really stupid otherwise.
Fun and Philosophical.......2006-01-08
"For every woman who has burned her bra, there's a man ready to wear one. Or so says Veronica Vera, who founded Miss Vera's Finishing School for Boys Who Want to Be Girls in 1992 as a resource for that part of the adult male population that feels the need to dress in women's clothing. This book unveils the naked truth about cross-dressing in a fun and philosophical way for would-be girls--and real girls, too! 35 photos."--© zebraz
A Must Read.......2006-01-04
First, know that I am all man, and I personally have no interest in learning how to cross dress. However, I found this book at my friend's house one night when I could not sleep, and being an attorney, I have to read. Let me tell you, this is a book I could not put down. If you want to understand not just the "why" but the "how to" of cross dressing, this is the book for you. It should be considered a must read for any transgender, transsexual, multigender, gendersexual, or transmultisexual. My only criticism is that it should have more tips. I want to sell the look on a bidet if I have the chance. Or my friend does, I mean.
Second, look at the cover. Am I the only one who thinks the tall one is hot? I mean, seriously, that's a chick, right?
Great Entertainment Value.......2005-02-20
A cheerful look at the world of the closeted cross-dresser, this book describes Veronica Vera's approach to offering cross-dressing services to men who have sufficient funds to be able to travel to her New York "Academy" for "lessons" of one sort or another.
Illustrated profusely with photos of students and staff, there are chapters covering everything from attitude, through body shaping and deportment, to finishing touches such as makeup, etiquette and outings. You can follow the adventures of students like Sally Sissyribbons as Ms Vera covers "studies" such as Home Ec, Fashion, Field Trips and Sex Education.
Yet, despite the sprightly, titillating approach to cross-dressing there are some very useful tips and tricks sprinkled throughout. More, Veronica Vera's philosophy and some very timely words of wisdom can be found, strategically placed for the most effect. For example, while covering the subject of what is referred to as "passing," she says, "You can sell what you believe in, so believe in your right to be your femmeself and you will be empowered in all aspects of your life."
Although the book provides the reader with lighthearted, humourous entertainment, if that is what you are after, I would not recommend it to the person who is seriously looking for advice or support on transgender issues.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent and very thorough.......2007-05-24
This is the 6th book I've read about lovebirds, and my favorite one. It has alot of history on the birds, and also talks about training them, how to handle them when they first come home, diseases, and how to feed them and even a chapter on breeding. Very complete, and has so many pictures that it makes it hard not to read. I recommend it!
Not enough general review.......2007-05-07
The book has some basic review of lovebirds but fills the rest of the book with explanations of genetics and the mutations and pictures of all the lovebird mutations. It wasn't particularly what I was looking for. I wanted to know their habits, personalities, etc. as I was not looking to breed lovebirds.
Information Plus.......2007-01-04
Excellent communication, fast postage.
The book I received has all the information I would ever hope to need.
EXCELLENT BOOK ON LOVEBIRDS !!.......2005-09-12
EVERYTHING IN THIS BOOK IS GIVEN IN GOOD DETAILS, YOU CAN LEARN SOMETHING FROM IT. I RECOMMEND IT
Great for the novice bird owner.............2004-04-11
As the new owner of six love birds, I find THE LOVE BIRD HANDBOOK by Vera Appleyard, indispensible. I now know that my little birds are a great choice of parrot(two toes back and two toes front and a `horned beak'). I like the colorful antics of the larger birds, but am afraid of the bigger parrots with their tough beaks. Love birds are funny little guys who figure things out pretty quickly and each of my love birds cost about one-fourth the amount I paid for my Senegal Parrot (who is a great little bird).
After reading Appleyard's book, I figured out that although three of my `non-masked' love birds appear different from one another they are all variants of the peach-faced love bird from Central Africa. As they purportedly came from the same clutch this makes sense(the bird shop owner was a confused man, i.e. not sure what his partner/wife had done).
Appleyard's book contains useful information on love bird diet and care as well as things to avoid. She also indcludes a section on "What not to do, ever." As all birds can become nippy, I find her advice timely, not only with regard to the lovebirds, but with regard to the other companion birds that live with me. I have been bitten on more than one occasion, and Appleyard has many useful suggestions about how to "nip" this behavior in the bud.
I've kept birds for about two years and read dozens of books on parrots and parrot behavior, and can recommend this book to the novice. It contains useful introductory information found in other books and combines and distills useful ideas specifically about love birds. I was thinking of buying six parakeets (budgies) before I bought my love birds, but I am happy I read Appleyard's book and purchased love birds instead. They are just as colorful as parakeets, and they will live a lot longer. And, they are sweet little birds, very affectionate with each other when they aren't "beak fighting."...just like human kids.
