If you've read any of their other books, it's the same stuff over and over again. They should have just written the one book and left it at that.

1 out of 5 stars THE GIRLY-MAN'S GUIDE TO PICKING UP CHICKS..........2007-01-22

... is a total wimpfest promoting a so-called "COMPLIMENTS - COMPASSION - REASSURANCE" system that will most assuredly place you squarely in the testosterone-free "friend zone"... at one point in the book, these two asexuals gushed about how much fun it was to hear the banter between their female friends as they're getting glammed up in preparation for a night out cruising OTHER GUYS in the clubs!

I don't know about you, but I want to be the guy that a woman thinks about when she's feeling freaky-deaky and wants to party naked, not the guy she wants to yap with about the latest "Young and the Restless" plot twist or discuss this month's issue of Cosmo... there is nothing remotely manly in their approach to meeting women whatsoever and, as a previous reviewer suggested, should be renamed to something along the lines of "how to be the flaming fruitcake that every woman loves but won't ever sleep with" or "make every girl want you (as a friend only)".

It boggles the mind as to how this was ever published - complete and utter garbage.

2 out of 5 stars Not Worth the Money. .......2006-03-16

I found Make Every Girl Want You to be a real disappointment. In fact, it's one of weakest dating books out there. The authors advocate using their "CCR Method" for capturing girl's hearts, and the acronym stands for compliments, compassion, and reassurance. Well, I guess there's nothing wrong with making use of such devices as long one does not do so to the point of being a pusillanimous kitten. One must be devoted to pull it off because it is absolutely essential to avoid talking about anything interesting or important with the women you desire. Ask all sorts of innocuous questions while complimenting the heck out of them, and these guys will say you have game. Of course, sometimes questions are beneficial, but you're going to have to blather about their thoughts, needs, and desires ad infinitum-so get ready for some heavy suffering.

If that were all they said here, I would give it a higher rating. The real problem is the authors' irresponsible analytical errors. They assume that women do not like bad boys or jerks. From experience, we know this to be absolute hogwash. Insecurity causes some, but not all, girls to be attracted to those who are indifferent to them. Fate and Reil should implicitly understand this as these same insecurities cause women to be attracted to men paying a CCR level of attention to them.

They also disgracefully buy into all sorts of feminist non-sense such as the myth of beauty put out by our society. They appear to know nothing about the biological basis for sexual desire as they think women lust "a connection" in a relationship more than anything else. One would agree, provided that they spent their life watching "The View." Status, money, and physical attractiveness are far more important to women than "a connection," although I do not deny establishing one will help your cause greatly. Better advice is to learn how to play the guitar and acquire more cash, so you don't end up like these guys spending the rest of your life talking about shoes, necklaces, and tops.

1 out of 5 stars What, I say what were they thinking.......2006-02-10

I ordered this book with high hopes that the elusive girl over the cube wall would be mine 4ever. When I got home and open the box and finally got my hands on my prized purchase, I couldn't wait for the mysteries to be unlocked. With a one star rating you may already know where the review is going. I tried to follow in Oscar's footsteps but apparently my feet were too small and I got off on the wrong foot. I used the three different angles they laid out and to say it didn't work would be an understatement of epic proportions. Not only did it not work with the hottie over the cube wall but failed with the un-hottie in the mailroom. I can only say that I was devastated by the claim that it would work even for a pathetic guy like me. In closing, I would say that if you're trying to get the girl of your dreams or for that matter a date with a girl in the mail room this is not the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars It Seems Crazy, But Works Flawlessly.......2005-11-29

I am really surprised at some of the reviews of this book. Personally, I believe that the individuals who rated this book at one star either didn't really read the book or thought that the method would not work and never tried it. A buddy and myself learned the method and soon had more women trying to have sex with us than we could handle. The secret to the book is to apply a simple philosophy to the way you normally communicate with women. It seemed crazy at first, but my buddy and I were astounded at the results. We would have simple conversations with women (that we'd just met) and then we'd watch them start to call, get together with us, and even bring more (prettier) friends with them when they came. I am not saying that you'll read this book and every girl in the world will want to sleep with you, but I guarantee after using the method for a while you'll get girls interested in you that you never thought you'd ever have a chance with. To all the guys out there....don't miss your opportunity to read and try out the method in this book. I am living proof that it works. It really does!

Fool's Fate is the third book of Robin Hobb's Tawny Man trilogy, and the ninth and concluding volume of the Fitzchivalry Farseer saga, one of the best high-fantasy series of the turn of the millennium. Fitz is the bastard son of the royal family of the Six Duchies, which he serves as assassin, guardsman, and Skill-magician. Fitz also serves the White Prophet as "Catalyst," the unique person who may enable the White Prophet to change human destiny for the better. In Fool's Fate, Fitz must accompany his kinsman, Prince Dutiful Farseer, to a distant northern island, where the prince must slay the world's last male dragon to win the hand of the Out Islands princess Elliania, the woman he loves. However, not even Elliania wants the dragon dead; why, then, does she require Dutiful to kill Icefyre? Are darker forces manipulating Elliania? Even worse, if Icefyre dies, the White Prophet foresees not only his own death, but a grim future for humankind. The prophet's only hope of changing the future is his Catalyst. --Cynthia Ward

Book Description

A heralded writer of epic fantasy, Robin Hobb has given readers worlds within worlds in her heroic Farseer and Liveship Traders trilogies. Now she takes the final step in the breathtaking trilogy of the Tawny Man, as the tale of FitzChivalry Farseer comes to an epic end. Rife with boundless adventure and unforgettable characters, Fool’s Fate is destined to become a classic of the genre.

Assassin, spy, and Skillmaster, FitzChivalry Farseer, now known only as man-at-arms Tom Badgerlock, has become firmly ensconced in the queen’s court at Buckkeep. Only a few are aware of his fabled, tangled past—and the sacrifices he made to survive it. And fewer know of his possession of the Skill magic. With Prince
Dutiful, his assassin-mentor Chade, and the simpleminded yet strongly Skilled Thick, FitzChivalry strives to aid the prince on a quest that could ultimately secure peace between the Six Duchies and the Outislands—and win Dutiful the hand of the Narcheska Elliania.

For the Narcheska has set the prince on an unfathomable task: to behead a dragon trapped in ice—the legendary Icefyre, on the island of Aslevjal. Yet not all the clans of the Outislands support the prince’s effort to behead their
legendary defender. Are there darker forces at work behind the Narcheska’s imperious demand? As the prince and his coterie set sail, FitzChivalry works behind the scenes, playing nursemaid to the ailing Thick, while striving to strengthen their Skill—ultimately bringing his unacknowledged daughter into the web of the Skill magic, where the truth must finally unfold.

The quest emerges amid riddles that must be unraveled, a clash of cultures, and the ultimate betrayal. For knowing that the Fool has foretold he will die on the island of ice, FitzChivalry has plotted with Chade to leave his dearest friend behind. But fate cannot so easily be defied.

5 out of 5 stars a fool in love, love the Fool [no spoilers].......2007-09-03

"The Tawny Man: Fool's Fate" concludes "The Tawny Man Trilogy" as FitzChivalry Farseer, in the guise of Tom Badgerlock, quests with Prince Dutiful and others to obtain the head of Icefyre for the Prince's Out Island bride-to-be Narcheska Elliania. The author beautifully mixes emotions with character and environment descriptions to finish a fantastic realm that started with "The Farseer Trilogy" and "The Liveship Traders Trilogy".

The Skill is cleverly applied in the final novel of the storyline. Fitz utilizes the Skill competently, a talent he has been lacking throughout the series, and because of Nighteyes' absence the Wit becomes his secondary ability. Nettle and Thick display the cleverest and most unique talents. Prince Dutiful asserts himself and develops well as a leader as Chade's aggressive nature pushes the limit of all their abilities.

Burrich's appearance helps blend the past with the present. Chade's changed a lot since "The Farseer: Assassin's Apprentice" with his lively and outgoing behavior however remains the same in his machinations. There could be an entirely new history concerning the Black Man on the island of Aslevjal, one I would be interested in reading. Fitz's most wonderful work though connects his affection with the Fool. Sadly the series ends after becoming attached with many wonderful characters.

After all the buildup and delay from the original series, I was disappointed with the outcome of the Rooster Crown. Jinna and her Hedge-Witch magic are pretty much neglected. A more detailed map of the significant terrains and comprehensive appendix would have been useful.

I highly recommend this series to any fan of the fantasy genre.

Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars A Compelling End to an Epic Tale.......2007-08-20

(Note: This review is for the whole series not just this final chapter) This book ends the tale of the Farseers which began with the Assassin series and is one of those rare epic tales that you rarely get to read. You get to travel a mans whole life and its culmination is most satisfying. It is probably one of the few series I have ever enjoyed that I hope ends here with no additional sequels it is done so well. The character has earned a well deserved rest º I would recommend that any reader start with the Assassin series and end with the Tawny Man series (6 books) and you will understand the unbelievable highs and lows of an epic life in fantasy. All I can say to Robin Hobb is thanks for a job well done and a tale that surpassed all my expectations and surprised me anytime I thought I knew what was coming next.

3 out of 5 stars Five Stars for The Series - Three For This Book.......2007-08-09

I'm not sure what I can say that hasn't been said before. I've been crying off and on since I finished this book over 24 hours ago. I have yet to eat and my friends keep wanting to know what's wrong.

This book broke my heart.

The Author herself in a forum stated that the ending kind of took a life of it's own. That her projected ending (when she started writing) changed by the time she actually got around to writing this. This happens to writers and I can't fault her that. It's her creation and her baby.

However, the ending is so tragic to me that I can find little solace in it. I am undable to follow her train of thought to what she deems to be the "natural ending". I follow the trail originally set out by her and arrive at my own conclusions.

The ending with SPOILERS

Molly is, IMO an cop out. We are told over and over again that she is his 'lost love'. And also we know that she could never accept him with the Wit, could never accept him with Nighteyes - that he would have to choose. The Fool believes she would do the same with his love/bond with Fitz. So how is this true love? The Fool's love for Fitz "knows no boundaries". It's unconditional. It is the purest love, the most monumental love, the kind of love that transcends physical and mental bounds -- that has been committed to page in the fantasy genre -- IMO. And yet it is pushed aside at the end for Molly. I never expected a happy compact ending. But for Fitz to say, "Molly is enough, more than enough for me." makes me want to break something.

Perhaps the Catalyst and the Changer could not stay together indefinitely without changing the world over and over again -- but why did we have to have the ending we did?

I feel awful for the Fool at the end of this. He has his life and the knowledge that Fitz would have followed him and the knowledge that he was loved, oh so loved by him.... but I'm not sure that's enough considering he may think Fitz dead.

I'm rambling. The point is I don't know if I recommend to read this book. If you're going to take it the way I have, you may have to see a shrink.

I'm going to go back to crying now.

5 out of 5 stars Sad To See It End.......2007-07-09

WOW.....I have not read an author in a long while that just grabs you and gets you involved with the story line and the ones in it. After finishing the 9th book(the three connected series), I almost felt a little worn out, but very happy with the way it ends. My heart almost breaks with the way the Fool goes off into the sunset with out knowing what happens to the one whom he has shared so much. Anyway, will have to reread the who thing again one day. KUDOS to HOBB

5 out of 5 stars Please dont let it be over..........2007-07-03

This book may cause me to never read another fantasy novel, because well, how can anything else compare? OK maybe I am being a little melodramatic, but this fantasy series is one of the best Ive ever read. It saddens me that my adventures with Fitz and the Fool (and the other incredible characters) may have come to an end (well except for any re-reading I will do). The ending was excellent, with plenty of book left to wrap up the plot lines. It is rather uncanny how Hobb somehow closes all the story line and it fits so perfect.

Please, Ms. Hobb, give us some more..... There is still plenty to see and do in the farseer universe

Book Description

Lance Armstrong's War is the extraordinary story of greatness pushed to its limits, a vivid, behind-the-scenes portrait of Armstrong—perhaps the most accomplished athlete of our time—as he faces his biggest test: a historic sixth straight victory in the Tour de France, the toughest sporting event on the planet.

Made newly vulnerable by age, fate, fame, doping allegations, and an unprecedented army of challengers, Armstrong fights on all fronts to do what he does like no one else: exert his will to win. That will, which has famously lifted him beyond his humble Texas roots, beyond cancer, and to unparalleled heights of success, is revealed by acclaimed journalist Daniel Coyle in new and startling dimensions.

We see how Armstrong rebuilds after his near-loss in the 2003 Tour, discovering new strategies to cope with his aging body. How he fills the holes in his life after his painful divorce from his wife, Kristin, and the ensuing time apart from his three young children. How he manages the exceedingly difficult trick of being Lance Armstrong—a combination of world-class athlete, celebrity, regular guy, and, for many Americans, secular saint.

But a saint's life it's not. To function at his peak, Armstrong requires what his friends artfully call "stimulus"—and if it's lacking, he won't hesitate to create some. We see Armstrong operating at the turbulent center of a fast-orbiting cast of swaggering Belgian tough guys, controversial Italian sports doctors, piranha-toothed lawyers, and jittery corporations, not to mention a certain female rock star. We see the subtle mind games he plays with himself and with rivals Tyler Hamilton, Jan Ullrich, and Iban Mayo. We see him through the eyes of his teammates, competitors, and friends, and explore his powerful relationship with his mother, Linda. We see what happens three weeks before the Tour, when he's faced with a double challenge: a blowout defeat in an important race and the release of a controversial book seeking to link him to performance-enhancing drugs. And finally we see it all culminate in the Tour de France, where Armstrong will rise to new and unexpected levels of domination.

Along the way, Lance Armstrong's War journeys through the little-known landscape of professional bike racing, a Darwinian world of unsurpassed beauty and brutality, a world teeming with underdogs, gurus, groupies, and wholly original characters, where athletes do not so much choose the sport as the sport chooses them.

Over the season, Armstrong and these characters collide in raw and sometimes violent theater. From the first training camps to the triumphal ride into Paris, Lance Armstrong's War provides a hugely insightful look into the often-inspiring, always surprising core of this remarkable man and the world that shapes him.

5 out of 5 stars After "BIKE" Read "WAR"! See Inside & Out!.......2007-09-25

I had just finished "It's Not About The Bike" when my wife -- a keen cyclist -- turned to me and said, "That's only half the story." She handed me "Lance Armstrong's War." "Here's the other half of the story."

You know a good book when you should be doing other things and... you can't put the book down. Bills don't get paid. E-mails don't get answered. You spend too long in the bathroom. "WAR" is one of those books.

Naturally you need to have some passing fascination with the world of professional cycling. For me it was watching the Tour de France and wanting to know more about how it all worked. Daniel Coyle will lead any interested reader into a fascinating world...

An opera needs to be written about the Tour. The melodrama. The characters. The morality plays. The blood. The guts. The insanity. The money. The doping. The journey. The jeering crowds. The test. The human spirit. Victory and loss. It's all there, a nice thick juicy slice of Life! And a huge bite or two of that slice is in WAR.

On the cover of my copy Sports Illustrated has described WAS as a "literary tour de force." A bit of a snob when it comes to writing I noted to myself, (a) What would Sports Illustrated know about literature? and (b) Daniel Coyle's a SPORTS writer for God's sake!

And... the writing is wonderful. Great character sketches. You'll get all the ins and outs of race strategy, sponsorships, training. You'll see France. You'll get a great glimpse of what Bob (Bobke) Rolls calls Eurotrash. You'll love the wry humor and jaundiced eye. Just wait until you meet the Lance hangers-on, "The Dudes" and "The Bros." Be prepared to LOL.

So if you're at all curious about this fascinating world -- but, like me, are either too old or too wise not to join it (!) -- WAR is Highly Recommended. You're in for a good read.

5 out of 5 stars A Different Side of the Story?.......2007-09-15

I was expecting this to be another story TOLD by Lance, but it was not. I found this to be a more refreshing view on Lance and the Doping Scandles that encircled his Tour De France days.

No matter what my opinion is on Lance and the doping, I found this to be a great read. I learned about some of the "players" in the Cycling media community that are attacking lance's position and character (justified or not), and how the Team operates around the Cycling legend.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Sports writing!.......2007-08-17

This book is one of the finest examples of sports journalism that you're likely to encounter. In some important ways, Lance Armstrong and professional bike racing are almost irrelevant to the reaction this book provokes; the writing is so good that it is almost the "star" of the book.

This is because the author did two things that many-- probably most-- sportswriters don't do: First, he immersed himself in his subject, actually moving his family to the Spanish city where Armstrong and a number of other racers train. While he was there, he became part of the bike racing scene. The result is unprecedented insider access. He interviewed and came to really know dozens of people, not all of whom admire Armstrong. Second, he avoided the two worst afflictions of most modern sports writing, the urge to deify the athletes and the contrary urge to drag them into the gutter.

Bike racing as a sport and many of the bike racers themselves are indeed open to criticism; after all, the current flap over doping at the Tour de France is actually pretty minor compared to the rampant cheating in past races. (My favorite incident of cheating: The Tour's first winner was disqualified the following year for hopping a train to take a shortcut during a stage.) However, Coyle resists the temptation to paint the entire sport and all of the athletes with a black brush. They are humans who do human things, both good and bad, and that's how Coyle sees them.

Of course, some of the things they do seem superhuman. These skinny men consume the caloric equivalent of three complete Thanksgiving dinners every day of the Tour de France. They ride for miles and miles, churning out four or five times the power a typical person could produce. They train in horrible conditions, isolated from their families, for months. They suffer fractures, muscle tears, and horrible road burns, then get back on their bikes for more racing. And the vast majority of them do all of this in near-complete anonymity; stars like Armstrong are very rare.

The book contains a HUGE amount of information about bike racing equipment, strategies, and team organization and financing. It also offers deep insight into many of the sport's stars, particularly Armstrong. There's an "I didn't know that!" moment on nearly every page, and reading it is literally an education in an activity that is wildly popular in Europe, but mysterious to most Americans. However, all of that information is woven into a fast-paced, page-turner of a story.

If you are looking for an expose that demolishes Armstrong or bike racing, this isn't it. If you're looking for a book that promotes the "Saint Lance" legend, this isn't it either. This is careful sports journalism at its finest. And it is superb writing that will fascinate you as you are reading and give you a lot to think about after you are done.

5 out of 5 stars Peek inside the world of our sport's greatest legend.......2007-07-10

What a great book this is. After devouring it as quickly as I could, I'm reading it again to savor each morsel. I feel as though I've actually developed a relationship with the great Lance Armstrong--as though I have been granted access to his greatness at a deeper level. What makes this guy tick? Why is he the greatest cyclist the world has ever known? Read this book and you'll be about as close as you can get to the answer. Unless you're lucky enough to actually know him, this may be the next best thing.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Lance Armstrong's War.......2007-06-19

I gave this book five starts because I could think of no reason not to do so. The book is non-fiction. It was very well written and accomplished what is set out to do.

If you are not a Lance Armstrong fan or a fan of professional cycling then this book will probably bore you. If you are looking for a book about the life of Lance with intimate details of his personal life, his family, etc. then you may want to read his other book IT'S NOT ABOUT THE BIKE. This book is a behind the scenes look at the Tour de France and professional cycling in general. The book discusses the scientific methods of training, drug testing and many other interesting things that go on in the sport. The book also gives information about the lives of other notable professional cyclists such as Jan Ullrich, Tyler Hamilton and Floyd Landis just to name a few.

Some quick advice before you start reading the book: read the section in the back of the book entitled "notes on the sport" first. Especially if you are not a fan or not familiar with professional cycling. This section will give you a better understanding of the terminology used throughout the book.

A word of caution if you are a parent and trying to decide if you child should read this book or not: This book contains a moderate about of profanity. So keep this in consideration.

Man's Fate was first published in 1933. As a fictional account of the early days of the Chinese Revolution, this novel remains a powerful expression of psychological insight into the spirit of political revolution. From the opening scene, in which Chinese terrorist Ch'en Ta Erh struggles internally over his task of assassinating a sleeping man, Malraux combines gritty action with an elaboration of the existential principle that social change is powered by the actions of individuals.

Book Description

As explosive and immediate today as when it was originally published in 1933, Man's Fate (La Condition Humaine), an account of a crucial episode in the early days of the Chinese Revolution, foreshadows the contemporary world and brings to life the profound meaning of the revolutionary impulse for the individuals involved. As a study of conspiracy and conspirators, of men caught in the desperate clash of ideologies, betrayal, expediency, and free will, Andre Malraux's novel remains unequaled.

4 out of 5 stars A SAGA OF THE SECOND CHINESE REVOLUTION.......2007-02-17

As a young man in the late 1920's many held out high hopes that the French writer Andre Malraux would become an accomplished revolutionary writer, or at least an extraordinary writer of revolutionary sagas. No less a communist literary critic than Leon Trotsky, the consummate man of action and letters, praised his early work. Man's Fate is a prime example of the reason that leftist critics praised his work. Although later events would destroy his reputation as a writer and as a man of action on the left this novel takes its place in the pantheon of well written expressions of the dilemma of modern humankind confronted as it is with one half of itself mired in the mundane bourgeois (and in this case also feudal) world and the other half striving toward a more just and equitable society.

The action of the novel takes place in the throes of the Second Chinese Revolution at a point where the alliance between Chiang Kai-Shek's Kuomintang and the Chinese Communist Party had broken down and Chaing was ready to butcher the Communists in order to take undisputed control of the Chinese state. Like Russia before it, everyone had known that a second Chinese Revolution was coming. The only question at that point was whether it was to be a bourgeois revolution in the classic Western sense or a socialist revolution that would go a long way to helping the Soviet Union of the 1920's break out of its isolation after various unsuccessful revolutionary attempts in the West had failed. As it turned out neither event occurred at that time. This tension, and especially the tension of the Communists who were under orders from the Communist International, and hence Moscow, to subordinate themselves to Chiang unconditionally, is what drives the action.

The novel is also a snapshot of what the Communist International's `high policy' looked like as it was implemented on the ground among the secondary cadre and rank and filers of the Chinese Communist Party, their allies, semi-allies, adversaries and the merely indifferent. In addition, it is also an early literary expose of the relationship between those who carry out, even if in small ways, Western imperialist policy in their separate and exclusive colonial enclaves and those `natives' who do the `coolie' work. That tension exists today, as can readily be seen in places like Iraq, so one should pay particular attention to that dynamic. Read on.

2 out of 5 stars Hardly worth reading.......2007-02-07

This book read as if the Malraux was going through some sort of teenage life crisis when he wrote it in which he views all of humanity with extreme cynicism. This book really has no hero, and there is something detestable about every character. I realize that some would say that is an accurate reflection of the human condition; and certainly we all do have our own problems. However, the point here is that the negative traits are the salient ones for these characters, which is hardly realistic. As a work of fiction I don't think this book has anything to offer except a deep sense of depression. The writing is not exceptionally good, and Malraux's insight into humanity is base and weak.

Nevertheless, I think this book does earn two stars due to the fact that it fairly accurately covers the issues surrounding one of the most important events in Chinese history: the KMT purge of the Communists in Shanghai in 1927. Malraux does capture the feelings that many Chinese were dealing with, and he makes those feelings apart of his characters. Malraux clearly presents a more favorable view of the Communists in this episode, though he's objective in admitting that they aren't the best people, either.

I would recommend this book to those people who are interested in a fictional, yet historically significant portrayal of this event in Chinese history. You don't need any background knowledge of Chinese history to get through this book, even if you do need a good deal of staying-power due to its ridiculously depressing portrayal of humanity.

2 out of 5 stars Less a novel than an explication of adolescent, half-baked ideas.......2006-07-22

Ugh. This novel is just as clumsy as I remember from college.

I like to occasionally re-read books that I read long ago in school. I often find that I was previously too immature to appreciate them, and I find much more that I understand from the perspective of an adult.

This novel let me down badly; it's no better than I remember it.

I have almost the exact same impression now that I had then. It has a gripping beginning -- Chen standing at the foot of the bed of his intended assassination victim, talking himself into striking through the mosquito netting. But after that exciting first scene, the remainder of the book is tedious.

This novel is set in China, during revolutionary battles in the 1920s. What a missed opportunity to set irresistible scenes! How I would have loved to see these cities in my mind, to feel the commotion on their streets, to smell the smells and taste the tastes. But this novel provides almost none of that. These places and people remain lifeless, two-dimensional, little more than vessels for Malraux to impart his philosophies.

The basic message of this book is that "man's fate" is to replay the same violent conflicts again and again, that they signfy nothing other than basic human drives. Ideology and politics are illusions, in Malraux's world. Although his sympathies are with the communists, he doesn't really provide clear reasons for this. Instead, he creates characters to represent different archetypes and to make his points; one has become a revolutionary to seek the dignity denied him by his mixed ethnic background; another is driven by the desire to die a meaningful death; another is cynically interested only in his own profit and then survival. Malraux suggests that these character types will always be with us, enacting the same tragic, violent dramas over and again.

(For what it's worth, I believe Malraux to be wrong in this. One wonders if his world-weary cynicism is a function of his Frenchness, that is his having witnessed the hypocritical, self-serving nature of imperialism, and living with the historical fact that the French Revolution, in contrast with the American, truly was little more than an exchange of one set of authoritarians for another. But Malraux's core beliefs are wrong; the condition of humanity does in fact change; average man can and does conduct himself differently in a modern democracy than he did in Ivan IV's Russia; in our modern world, Malraux's fatalism is worse than merely wrong, it's dangerous.)

If you like novels that serve as forums for fleshing out philosophical or political conceptions, you might enjoy this one. But if you read to experience the pleasure of an author's gift for narration, steer clear.

5 out of 5 stars Man's fate.......2006-03-20

I read the "Shanghai station" before and found this book mentioned in the appendix. This is a much better story. Tells very realistic the pre-revolutionary struggle in Shanghai, the conditions under which the local population lives. The state of Shanghai with it's international, foreign, colonial part. The desparation of the people. This book is very fascinating, however paints a somehow somber, depressing picture.

2 out of 5 stars Another Great French Novel Mangled by a Bad Translation.......2003-07-04

I am a native French speaker and a professor of French Literature. I love this novel and have a real bone to pick with this 1932 British translation, which refers to the hero-revolutionaries as "terrorists," a word which has come to mean something quite horrendous in America. Malraux's writing style is anything but stiff. It's the translator who chose stiff and stuffy words. Where there seems to be a tone of condescention from the translator, there is none whatsoever in the French. If anything, this is a very fluid novel, based on what Malraux considered an American style of novel writing. Fluid, fast-paced, character-driven. Why is this the only translation available to us in the US? Because the publisher probably didn't have to pay a copywright fee to publish this translation. It's a sin of greed -- how ironic when this novel is basically about that very thing.

Well I sadly admit I read this book, but now I get to write this review about it so YEAH!

The book is mostly filled with nonsense and babble, most of which is common sense. Treat people well, and listen.... blah blah.. There are a few good points, and if you have no interpersonal skills you might want to pick this book up, or any other "make people like you book". My opinion is that this book won't help you get more ladies, but it may help you not repel them.

1 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC COVER!!! Content . . . not so........2007-01-12

The cover of this book is so amazingly artistic, I just HAD to buy it! The photograph is so well done and the model so well positioned that to NOT buy this book (for the cover) would be a sin if ever there was one! The lighting, the reflection in the wood, the well tanned legs and, of course, the strategically placed panties make this cover absolutely MESMERIZING! The photographer, Juan Chavez, is TRULY an artist of the highest caliber! I hope he was paid well for the enormous amount of time and effort that obviously went into preparing this shot. It is the photo on the cover of this book that makes it so attention-grabbing.

As for the content . . .

It is a giant, steaming pile of putrified garbage mixed delicately with just a hint cow droppings.
Anyone buying this book and actually attempting ANYTHING it suggests needs to move out of their parents basement and into their own apartment. But I digress. Credit where credit is due. Mr. Fate and Mr. Reil did come up with a rather catchy, if obvious and banal, title. The rest . . . well. I have to wonder which one of them actually "wrote" this thing. Since most partnerships are woefully lopsided I can see one of them typing while the other simply dictates his experiences in the bar the previous night.

I did not relate to this material at all. The material is generic , unoriginal, and assumes you have no personality. I am not an expert on picking up girls and I could use extra skills, but this was not it. Also, I think the book makes someone try too hard to please womens anticipations. You wanna be a generic fake, follow the book!

To delve into the subject of love with relational psychologist Stephen A. Mitchell is to race headfirst into an enormous haystack with a kid who's intent on finding not one, but probably a dozen, needles. In Can Love Last? Mitchell's boyish curiosity and profound intelligence virtually set fire to the subject, both enlightening and challenging his readers. Mitchell's premise is that romance, in its many forms, is key to a life worth living.

Why, then, does the sizzle so often fizzle, especially in committed relationships? More importantly, what forces compel humans to actively douse romantic flames in favor of more "stable" love? Mitchell's probings of these and other questions take him on a fascinating journey through times and topics historical as well as contemporary. From Plato to Freud, Homer to Kris Kristofferson, Mitchell weaves history, philosophy, literature, and (of course) psychology into a surprisingly sensible pattern. Yes, a few loud threads stand out, including his well-supported theory that "stable" love is actually much riskier than romance. But over all, differing theories on love and desire, stability and adventure, or surrender and control find more parallels than crossroads under Mitchell's tender care, making this book an intellectual gift to the masses. --Liane Thomas

Book Description

Not since Thomas Moore's Soul Mates has a major thinker redefined our most basic human emotion. What can we expect from romantic love? Stephen A. Mitchell revitalizes our dreams, while recognizing the pitfalls we face, in this groundbreaking examination of the major components of romantic love—sex, idealization, aggression, self-pity, guilt, and commitment. Common wisdom has it that love is fragile and unreliable, but Mitchell argues that romance doesn't actually diminish in long-term relationships—it becomes increasingly dangerous. What we regard as the transience of love is really risk management: segregating love and desire, keeping mundane reality in the foreground, and limiting expectations to curtail dependency. Bringing to bear thirty years of clinical practice, Mitchell offers fresh and practical advice that runs the gamut of romantic experiences, from avoiding a humdrum relationship to idealizing a future soul mate to feeling nostalgic over lost loves. He shows that love can endure, if only we become aware of our self-destructive efforts to protect ourselves from its risks.

5 out of 5 stars Not fade away.......2002-10-25

One of the stressors of my life, and I suspect of many other people's lives is the nagging feeling that somehow we are approaching love wrongly. On the one hand, we want to experience it and we want to believe that the experience is real. On the other hand, our own experience and the experience of others around us inclines us to feel as though it is a little bit foolish past the age of 16 to believe *too* much in the idea of enduring passion.

Does passion always fade? Do we need to choose relationships at the base of the pyramid of needs-- passionless but sustaining, predictable but safe? Can we ever sustain that passion that we feel at the beginning of a relationship?

What Mitchell says (with quiet authority that makes me believe him) is that yes, we can, if we are brave enough to really want that to happen. What he argues is that passion, while desirable, is ultimately quite threatening and that it takes both personal mastery and courage to be willing to let it into your life. Mitchell asserts that it is not romance which is the illusion, it is safety which is the illusion. Romance is the thing which brings the reality of the world to us-- with all its danger and complexity. Safety is a veil which we throw over others potentially close to us to keep them from coming close enough to hurt.

Mitchell created a readable book which should appeal to professionals in the field as well as ordinary folk looking for some answers to complicated problems. He builds his arguments carefully using a combination of prior work and original thinking derived from his practice and patients.

Very impressive, thought provoking, and blessedly free from overly complicated language.

5 out of 5 stars Lasting Love.......2002-03-12

How can love survive despite the vagaries of hectic schedules, work and parenting pressures, aging, and boredom? That is one of the many questions Stephen Mitchell attempts to answer in Can Love Last? While considering the oft-posed questions about "chemistry," real love, and soul mates, he looks at whether you can determine if you've found "the one"; and how to keep them if you have.

Dr. Mitchell, who died suddenly in 2000 at the age of 54, founded the journal Psychoanalytic Dialogues and was renowned for his work in relational psychoanalysis, which features a more collaborative approach than traditional psychoanalysis. As Mitchell's widow, Margaret Black, C.S.W., points out in her foreword to the book, when it comes to his analysis of relationships, "Freud's formulations have not been particularly helpful, certainly not very optimistic."

A shame, really, since it is love, according to Mitchell, that makes life worth living. But nurturing love is no easy task since, as he points out in his introduction, "Modern life, at all points on the socioeconomic scale, is difficult, draining, and confusing." That's where his book comes in, offering guidance on how to look at the differences between love and desire, and how to have both in a relationship; doing so with prose that is often illuminating and even poetic. Describing the need for both security and adventure in a relationship, Mitchell writes, "Romantic passion emerges from the convergence of these two currents," which are "at once both erotic and sacred."

Based on modern divorce rates, Mitchell argues modern relationships are "based on fantasies of permanence." Although we seek committed relationships for security, in reality, rather than safe, these relationships are actually dangerous. "Love, by its very nature, is not secure;" Mitchell concludes, although "we keep wanting to make it so." The key to Mitchell's approach to making love last lies in acknowledging this danger exists and harnessing its energy to restore desire and passion through spontaneity and romance.

He makes a good point when he argues it is curious how separated couples often resolve to recover their "lost youth" through reckless abandon, when in reality, during their youth they longed for commitment and security. Hence, one's youth was not "lost," but willfully abandoned. And when he takes this premise one step further, it stands to reason that within a relationship, we actually avoid adventure for fear of destabilizing our comfort and security. Subconsciously, it's a Catch-22 situation.

The book can be slow going at times, but only because Mitchell's theories - understandably so, given the complexity of human dynamics - are complicated. But if you take the time to sort through them, the rewards could be significant.

It's a fantasy most of us have shared: the-knight-in-shining-armour boy meets his girl-princess; girl marries boy and they live happily ever after. But in the real world, "back in our imagined castle, both the knight and the damsel, alas, often lose their allure." The most common reaction is to deduce that we have been deceived - that the knight was no knight, or the princess was no princess - which is often the "safest" recourse since blaming the other partner precludes the need to look at oneself.

When a patient not named Carl entered therapy with Dr. Mitchell, he discovered that although he still cherished his wife's many admirable qualities he could no longer tell her so since doing so would leave him vulnerable. To him, it would feel like "begging" because "He had come to feel that his stalwart performance as husband had earned him the right to her love. To approach her appreciatively or seductively would be to renounce those claims."

Coming back to the "danger" in a long-term relationship theme, Mitchell explains "falling out of love" with your partner can be a defense mechanism, and "What is so dangerous about desiring someone you have is that you can lose him or her." Especially revealing is the fact that our "ever-intensifying fascination with celebrities seems to feed our hunger for idealization and our fear of its consequences by glorifying and then exposing and destroying our 'stars.'"

At least one age-old question ("Why do opposites attract?") is finally answered here. According to Mitchell, "Opposites attract because they are inversions of each other, the same thing in different forms." If Harry is attracted to Sally because she is outgoing while he is shy, it could be because Harry also has a desire to be outgoing but has suppressed that desire.

When it comes to other advice, Mitchell says it's okay to be "made for each other" as long as you don't take it too far, for "fantasies of perfect harmony and synchrony can be enormously destructive if taken too seriously, as a steady expectation, rather than a transient, episodic connection." But the answers Mitchell offers to his question, "Can love last?" aren't always altogether romantic; especially his advice that "the capacity to love over time entails the capacity to tolerate and repair hatred."

At last, he suggests that instead of doing something to improve our relationships, "Time might be better spent on reflecting on what one is already doing!" "Spontaneity," he notes, is discovered not through action but through refraining from one's habitual action and discovering what happens next." And although "Desire and passion cannot be contrived," they "occur in contexts, and we have a good deal to do with constructing contexts in which desire and passion are more or less likely to arise."

Many of the case studies in the book - although sometimes perverse - are utterly fascinating, and Mitchell has taken relationship theory to a new level.

5 out of 5 stars Still outstanding.......2004-04-10

Even today this book is the best read on the subject, I found so far. Concise, insightful yet entertaining, as in the hunt for (better: discovery of) the Keiling curve for CO2 concentration in the atmosphere - involving locations around the world and "peaking" in Hawaii. I also found it a fair treatment, giving some of the difficulties that the study of climate change is facing scientifically and politically. The emphasis is on science, thankfully. Jonathan Weiner learnt and teaches a lot through this book. Such as that global warming is a very slow process and manifests itself more in extremes and indeed will take yet another 20, 50 to 100 years until nature will prove the adherents or shock the skeptics of global warming. (Too late then.)
The action film "The Day After Tomorrow" due out in mid 2004 is a simplified, well meant dramatization of this subject. I recommend that you read this book before seeing the film and you will know the facts and then can enjoy the film even more (and smile and shake your head the wiser for it). Will take you a couple of feature film lengths to read this book, and fortunately the book is available via the indirect sellers on amazon.com.

5 out of 5 stars The Next One Hundred Years.......2002-10-15

Although written more than 10 years ago, this book lays out in understandable terms to the non-professional scientist reader the foundation of the current global warming debate. Jonathan Weiner{winner of the 1995 Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction for "The Beak of the Finch: A Story of Evolution in Our Time"}, gives compelling evidence that although a complex issue, global warming, climate change, ozone depletion, etc., are very real phenomena.

For those who wish to read more about the policy debate within government, NGO, and business circles; I recommend another Pulitzer Prize winner, Ross Gelbspan's "The Heat is On: The High Stakes Over Earth's Threatened Climate[1997]." I suggest reading Weiner's book first because it helps comprehend the jargon that professional science types tend to use.

5 out of 5 stars "The Next One Hundred Years..." is Essential.......2002-02-08

Jonathan Weiner's book concerning the Earth and its biosphere and what is imperiled by the major increases in the burning of fossil fuels and the destruction of natural resources is one of the most important books for Ecologists, Environmentalists and leaders from all walks of life to read. This book allows the layman with a rudimentary science background to grasp the fundamental scientific facts supporting global warming. It tries to cover many different indications of global warming, from air bubbles frozen for thousands of years in Antartica to ocean temperatures, ground temperatures, carbon monitoring, and many other points of evidence. It introduces one to the history of the exploration of this phenomenon, giving a kind of personal tour of each major discovery and what its implications are. It incorporates actual weather disasters such as the drought of 1988 and how it affected farmers, people, politicians and news reporting. It takes you on the scene to the places where atmospheric composition is being carefully monitored. It covers the full range of toxic gases and what their build up could mean in the future. Most importantly, it describes the interelationship between toxic gases and air polution. In general, it seems to have a more detailed view of global warming than other books on the same topic.
Finally, it leaves you with little doubt that time is running out, and something must be done, sooner rather than later. This book should not become out of print, and should be read by leaders the world over. It resolves the ambiguities surrounding the global warming controversy.

4 out of 5 stars Provocative and insightful glimpse into earth's future.......1999-03-13

Although nearly 10 years old this book is a very readable popular science assessment of the plight of our planet. It provides a provocative view of the forces that will shape our environment in the 21st century. I was inspired to begin collecting information on climate change that might one day form the basis of book of my own.

Book Description

When destiny called, she pressed 1 for more options

With the name Robyn Fortune, shouldn't luck be a sure thing? Instead, black clouds love me. All I did was show up at a family bar mitzvah and cue lightning . . . this huge storm blew in.

My mom announced she was leaving my dad and moving in with me. (Perfect! More competition on JDate.) I found out my boss planned to fire me. (Help wanted: Be the exclusive makeup artist for a two-faced network news star.) My ex's gambling debts left me near bankruptcy. (Please buy our wedding gifts on craigslist.) But, good news. I was offered money to date a man who had worse luck than me. (Dear Visa, I hope you appreciate that I said yes.)

If not for my friend Rachel, I would have chickened out. Instead, I went to his apartment, spotted an old photo, and realized it was HIM! The boy I was mad for in college but never got to meet. And get this! Turns out our paths had been crossing since birth.

Coincidence or karma? Our finagling families wouldn't talk . . . until the day destiny sent me on a wild ride that became my long lost spiritual journey.

Ladies, take my advice. When fate knocks, answer the damn door!

4 out of 5 stars Okay read wanted it to be better........2007-01-03

More like 3 1/2 stars. I thought this book moved a little slow at first however I really liked the premise and enjoyed all the unexpected twists and turns throughout the book. Not my favorite chick lit but an okay read.

5 out of 5 stars Loved this book!.......2006-09-27

Saralee has done it again! She has written another funny, witty, and clever book that I couldn't put down. I've read "A Little Help from Above" and "Claire Voyant" and loved this one too. I'm sorry to see her books end because I get so "into" the characters. I'm still thinking about them long after I've finished the book. Saralee is such a brilliant story-teller; I can't wait for her next one!

5 out of 5 stars Saralee's Best Yet.......2006-09-03

I always love reading Saralee, but this one is particularly satisfying. Trademark relentless humor firmly in place, this novel also treats pathos with sensitivity. You can't help but root for the heroine, her family and friends, regardless of their eccentricities, which Saralee makes thoroughly sympathetic. An absolutely great read; highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Laughing Out Loud.......2006-09-02

I laughed out loud as I read this new book that was written by Saralee Rosenberg. It is so funny and witty and true-to-life. You know these characters, you are probably related to some of them, and the words they say are the words you would say, if you had the nerve!

The book was entertaining and difficult to stop reading. It kept me amused throughout, and I loved the twists and turns the novel took. A fun story that takes you on a roller coaster ride of romance with an unpredictable ending.
