I have a friend who is a multiple personality disorder. Regardless if you have seen the movie version of this book, Sybil, with first rate performances by Emmy Winners Sally Field and Joanne Woodward, multiple personality disorder is a lot more complicated. Sometimes, the person who has it can't integrate all the personalities together. Sometimes, a person who has the disorder may not realize that they have it. Of course, sometimes they talk as children in their personalities but most of the time, their personalities emerge without witnesses who would notice that there is something wrong. Sybil was not a rare case but she is a terrific example of how somebody overcame horror at the hands of her own mother who was obviously mentally ill herself. The scenes that horrified me most in reading were the kitchen scenes where Sybil is raised and her mother does unspeakable things to her vaginal areas as well as locking her in small quarters. Child abuse has been around since the beginning of time. Some children like Sybil have other ways of coping with it. In her case, she developed fragmented personalities to overcome and handle the situation. Slowly, the personalities emerged because the good doctor welcomed it. In most cases, it may not be that welcoming. Sybil was or is still an artist and she was completely creative in developing the way to cope by becoming somebody else. You wonder how people like Sybil cope with such horror and now you will know that our minds are quite powerful tool in helping us deal with our pain.

This trash is some of the worst reading matterial produced in the Western Hemsiphere in this entire century. How anyone can be duped into believing such a ridiculous pack of lies is beyond me. The tragdedy of this story is not that it's real, it's that so many people actually believe it really happened. This woman was either cooerced into saying these things by way of hypnosis or she was delusional and hallucinated these stories. If schizophrenia really did run in this woman's family isn't it plausible that she suffered from the delusions and hallucinations that are common with schizophrenia? Further more, MPD has never actually been accepted as a genuine diagnosis and there are some who question its validity. I did some reasearch on it and discovered that a psychiatrist who was taking over for her dr. while she was out of town felt that this woman was lying as well. It's up each person to make up their mind on this. But for me, this story is a made up pack of lies.

I think that if you read this book believing it to be the true story that it claims to be, it is so heart wrenching and powerful, that it would no doubt be reviewed as a well deserved 4 or 5 star book. HOWEVER, finding out after the fact that it is actually in large part fictional, it loses ALOT of its power. Speaking for myself, it would have been better to simply publish it as a novel. I read it twice. Once, years ago when it was still believed to be true, and it had much more of an impact on me then. The second time it sort of left me feeling duped. In any case, Sally Field was wonderful in the movie adaptation. (This was the Million Little Pieces of the 70's.)

This book is the allegedly true story of Sybil, whose name was changed for the story to protect her privacy. Almost from the time she was born, Sybil was subjected to horrific physical, emotional, and sexual abuse at the hands of her schizophrenic mother. As a toddler, Sybil learned that she would be severely punished for getting angry, or for crying, or for exhibiting a wide variety of other normal emotions. In order to cope with her situation, her mind broke apart and comparmentalized her personality, eventually creating fifteen other "selves." Each separate personality was assigned a specific role in Sybil's life, such as Vicky, the outgoing and worldly one who could be at ease in social situations, Peggy Lou, who got angry and smashed things, and Mike and Sid, who handled construction and handyman duties.

Although the created personalities were aware of each other and able to communicate with each other to some degree, Sybil was completely unaware that they existed. What she knew was that there were many things she couldn't remember from her childhood, that seemingly ordinary objects and situations had the power to fill her with absolute terror, and that there were long periods of time she'd somehow blacked out. The most dramatic example of lost time was after Sybil's beloved grandmother's funeral, when Sybil was in third grade. She blacked out and returned to herself in a fifth-grade classroom. Her Peggy Lou personality had controlled her body for over a year.

This novel covers the course of Sybil's psychological treatment, leading her toward coming to terms with her childhood abuse and toward integrating her personalities into one complete self.

Although the validity of this story has been challenged, it is a compelling read even if treated as fiction. I was fascinated by the different personalities and the duties they adopted. I like the thought that the human brain is complex enough to put into effect this unique coping mechanism in order to save a child from completely falling apart.

5 out of 5 stars A Useful Toolkit for Dealing with Life's Challenges.......2006-07-02

Although written several years ago, this remains a valuable book for anyone who has or is facing adversity. Interestingly, many of the ideas in the book, which were based on a great deal of clinical observation, have actually been born out by empirical research.

One of the least helpful ideas that entered the mainstream of pop psychology was the notion that we are robots who can be programmed to behave dysfunctionally by adverse life events. That simple notion missed the fact that many people who have had awful life experiences turn out just fine, and others who seemed to enjoy every advantage have developed enormous problems. The fact is that we are a composite of our genes and our life experiences. And the genes in the brain do not so much determine our behavior, as predispose us to how we react to the environment. There is also increasing evidence that mental states may impact gene expression. So positive thoughts and emotions may be able to overcome or ameliorate the impact of negative experiences. Enter the notion of resilience, which has a genetic component, but can also be learned.

This book revolves around the idea that triumph over adversity involves seven key components:
1. Insight
2. Independence
3. Robust relationships
4. Initiative
5. Creativity
6. Humor
7. Morality

Each chapter is loaded with evaluations and advice on strengthening these key characteristics.

The model deals only with psychological resilience, with a few nods toward physical and spiritual resilience.

Warmly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful book.......2006-06-27

This is a wonderful, positive book which examines individuals from negative or deficient backgrounds and discovers their keys to success. The Wolin's work identifies strong traits and learned experiences which allow some people to beat the odds. Their chapters teach letting go of the negative, finding talents, skills, mentors and strength to become mature successful adults despite negative childhood or family influences. It is a positive book with a "get over it attitude" and explanations how. I find this book helpful as a SELF HELP book for struggles, useful as a clinician working with adults and adolescents and useful as a parent or mentor. Dr and Ms Wolin are also dynamic workshop presenters.

5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2003-09-17

This was a tremendously helpful book! Steven and Sybil Wolin have done a remarkable job here. I could not believe how much they knew about how I was feeling. It was as if they where there doing therapy with me.

In the book, they discuss seven "Resiliencies" that survivors instinctively use to get through difficult childhoods. Then they use "reframing" to show you an amazing transition from "feeling damaged" to "Survivor's Pride". Extremely therapeutic!

Overall, this is an extremely effective self-help book, and it is an easy read. I would definitely recommend it to everyone who has had a rocky childhood.

I easily give this book five stars.

5 out of 5 stars A fly on the wall.......2001-07-14

I am reading this book on the advice of my counselor. I checked it out of the library first because I didn't want to buy it if I didn't like it. When I found myself wanting to write in and highlight the passages of the library's copy, I knew I needed a copy of my own. The Resilient Self is singularly the most difficult book to read that I own. I read a chapter and put it down for a while. The thing that makes it difficult is that Dr. Wolin seems to see right through me. I think he was a fly on the wall at home in my family of origin. How could he possibly know what happened to me and how I feel about it unless he was there? I like the book because it tells me that it is not me that is flawed. I have strength and character of my own, something my counselor has been trying to tell me for five months. I also learned that there is no such thing as a perfect family. They all have troubles and challenges to overcome. We do the best we can with what we have. My advice: if you think your family of origin had problems, read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Stop calling me damaged!.......2000-03-20

As a professional who works with young adults who have survived challenging childhoods, and as an adult who has experienced these challenges, I can only say, "Bravo!" We've all heard quite enough about the damage done, and not near enough about our incredibly well honed survival skills - what the Wolins named "resiliencies". The resilience model gives us a language to use; naming the resiliencies evidenced by a young person is incredibly powerful. Reveiwing my own childhood through this lense is an affirmation and an honor to the child I was and the adult I have grown to be.

I would also recommend the McGraw-Hill Concise Encyclopedia of Science & Technology as a nice supplement.

The dictionary, as I expected, is excellent. I can easily and directly grasp the clear concept of meanings without imaging in my mother tongue, Japanese. Each explanation with the technical field is very concise and accurate. I believe that the dictionary helps me to perfectly understand the target words, for translating from English to Japanese, equivalent to those of an educated English speaker. Then, this will automatically make my task much easier.
Hopefully, I will also be able to obtain CD-ROM, which can be installed in my computer, Windows ME/MS-Word, for accelerating my job.

5 out of 5 stars a terrific book to use during retreats, youth group meetings, prayer groups, and for personal devotion and meditation .......2007-06-18

If you saw me at the coffee shop, scribbling away with my colored pencils, you might think I was doodling --- and pretty primitive doodling at that. But truth be told, I'm praying --- praying in color --- learning a new way to talk with God from Sybil MacBeth's unique first book. And it's not just for artists.

The bright, primary colors of the jacket and the unique full-color interior design grabbed me from the start. MacBeth, a math professor, believes that for those of us who struggle during prayer with wandering minds, restless hearts and intrusive thoughts, drawing with colored pencils or markers while we pray will help us focus and remember our prayers. It also will bring joy back to prayer. "When I draw as a way to enter prayer, I get to delight in my prayer and to feel God's delight that I am making an effort to pray," she writes. Prayer as joy? I was hooked. Praying in color is a simple concept, and it's easy to get started.

I began with an ink pen, drawing a small shape on a page of copy paper (MacBeth also suggests a notepad, blank journal, or any sort of paper you feel comfortable with). My friend Rick had just had a heart attack, and he was the first person on my mind to pray for. So I drew a heart, then put his name in it. Simple. And memorable.

Other ways to begin, MacBeth suggests, include writing one of the infinite names for the Almighty in a shape, a reminder that God is ever-present during your prayer time. Yet another option is writing your own name in a shape, if you are in a particularly difficult situation.

Next, MacBeth says to add detail to the drawing, remembering that this is not about being a fine artist but rather about creating something visual to remember your prayer. Each stroke and each moment you spend on your drawing is time spent with God. I added a Band-Aid to Rick's heart as I prayed for his healing, an encompassing halo symbolizing God's protection and all-surrounding love, and Rick's wife Susan's name leaning on top of the heart (a reminder that she needed my prayers as well).

Next comes the color. MacBeth recommends markers or colored pencils, and notes that some readers like gel pens. I had a good selection of colored pencils, so I used plenty of red, yellow and green to color in my heart and the doodles in and around it. The colors help you bring the symbol of your prayer more easily to mind later, MacBeth believes. I was finished with my prayer for Rick and ready to go to another.

When you move from one person to the next in this way, MacBeth suggests offering a closing prayer, an "Amen" or even more simple, "I'll be back." I like that! If the request is particularly heavy, she recommends taking several deep breaths or standing up and moving around to let go of any tension that might have built up.

When you're finished with your prayer page, you'll have a virtual collage of color, shapes and names. MacBeth calls this a prayer "icon," but evangelical readers need not be put off by this. "I use the word icon with the understanding that an icon helps us to see God. We do not worship the image; it has a transparency about it that lets us see through it to a deeper experience of God and God's presence." Well said.

Each page has step-by-step instructions that clearly illustrate whatever MacBeth is teaching. She integrates personal anecdotes gleaned from her PRAYING IN COLOR workshops, scripture, vulnerable insights from her own struggles with prayer and answers to potential criticisms.

Stuck on what to doodle? MacBeth includes samples of prayer pages or icons, and chapters full of ideas about who and what we might pray for. We can pray in color for our enemies, to meditate on scripture, to recall certain things, for discernment, or even pray using a prefab calendar during Advent or Lent. MacBeth even offers ideas for praying in color with a computer! There is plenty here to get the most artistically-challenged or prayer-challenged person scribbling away.

This would be a terrific book to use during retreats, youth group meetings, prayer groups, and for personal devotion and meditation times. Writes MacBeth, "A new prayer form gives God an invitation and a new door to penetrate the locked cells of our hearts and minds." A beautiful image, and one I'm planning to draw --- the next time I go to God in prayer. Thanks, Sybil!

5 out of 5 stars Praying Thanks for Praying in Color.......2007-05-01

So often, when I am journaling my prayers, the words just escape me, or I feel the urge to draw something but am intimidated by my lack of artistic skill. I can do collage and some painting and I can write, but my sketches are sad. So, when I saw this book on the table at a retreat last weekend, it called to me. I really didn't have the money, but I picked it up anyway. I put it back down and picked it back up. Something in me just NEEDED it. So, in the end, I paid for it. I began reading it immediately, before our evening session. My fingers itched to try out this technique. So, on Sunday morning, when I took some Sabbath time to sit outside in the quiet, I tried the idea shared in the first few chapters. It felt so natural. My body let go of so much perfectionism and I felt free and light.

I am sure this method of prayer via doodles will not work for everyone. But, it is worth a shot for anyone. It has so many uses, from the actual praying during drawing to the reminder each shape can bring throughout your day. This method of pray would be easy to do with children or to use when waiting somewhere or trying to simply slow your thoughts for a bit.

5 out of 5 stars Learning how to pray all over again.......2007-04-20

I've been searching for a "how to" book on praying. I wanted something more than just a bunch of pre-written prayers...a deeper connection. Praying in Color is just the book! I read it cover to cover in one night. Once I started drawing, I couldn't stop. I actually spent over an hour on one prayer. The first page of the book "Prayer Dilemmas" spoke volumes to me as I related to just about everything on the list. What a great book to reconnect to Spirit. I highly recommend this for adults, teens and families.

5 out of 5 stars Far Better Than You Might Think.......2007-04-19

Seemingly "too" simple or childish for adults, Praying In Color is excellent for any age person. I am someone who doesn't mind sitting still or quiet for a half hour and doesn't have difficulty staying focused, so I really thought I wouldn't need this "silly" activity. I was wrong! After just a few minutes of praying in color, I was hooked. My grandsons, ages 8 and 5, love it. Some of my friends tried it and then tried it with their husbands - they loved it. The possibilities for this activity are endless - what a boost to a prison ministry, or outreach to the deaf - for use by people who are uncomfrotable praying aloud in a group. Teens are excited by this activity as it really allows them to 'get out of the box'. And it is appropriate for people of ANY FAITH. Praying in color is really one of the oldest ways to pray - iconographers refer to their icons as 'prayers in color.' Try it - you will like it!

As a sales pitch for Tellington Touch, this book is great. As an instruction manual, it is totally worthless. Complex gestures such as those mentioned in the book need illustrations that take one step-by-step through the manipulation process. There aren't any, just a few photos that show one stop action part of the whole.

It did get me to take a T-Touch workshop, which was beneficial for my old and arthritic dog. The process works. The book doesn't.

I have applied the methods in this book to various cats at a homeless cat shelter. It is a lot of fun and the cats really like it too. The book has many fascinating stories of how Tellington developed her methods and how she has applied them to an incredible range of animal species.

5 out of 5 stars WAR - A REAL TRUE IMPACT STORY.......2007-04-23

I first read this when first release and just purchased another copy. If you want to read about two real heros, James Stockdale and his wife Sybil Stockdale read this book. They write side by side in spirit, him in a Vietnames prison, the Hanoi Hilton, and she home with thier children. One of the best love, war and a story that you will remember.

5 out of 5 stars Gripping and Tender.......2005-12-20

The late Vice Admiral Jim Stockdale was the highest ranking POW to return from captivity in North Vietnam. His wife Sybil kept the family focused and hope alive all throughout his long imprisonment.

They present alternating chapters that chronicle their personal challenges which are a microcosm of the nation's challenges at that time.

This should be required reading for all Americans.

For more on the plight of the families of those who were MIA in Vietnam, read Louis Stockstill's epoch-making article:

I cannot believe the personal, physical, emotional and spiritual strength it took to endure 8 years as a prisoner of War... and the ways in which he communicated with other POW's, his wife and the US government is unbelievable... brilliant. I read this book 2 years ago and gave it to a friend who gave it to another couple friends cross country... eventually I got it back and gave it to my brother who gave it to his buddy... I think either my dad or my uncle has it now. The best book I have read. I reccommend it to anyone. and I can't wait to read it again.

5 out of 5 stars book good, bad seller.......2003-12-12

Buyer beware of bookin2002@yahoo.com. I paid $60.00 for a book that was supposed to be in very good condition. When it arrived, the front cover was water damaged and the book was a third edition. $60.00 for a third edition? Not a very good deal.

5 out of 5 stars True American Hero on Vietnam and his country.......2000-04-27

Remember James Stockdale running for Vice President in the early 90's under the third party? He was perhaps the candidate with the greatest personal integrity in ages.

This book is just as genuine and is a vivid examination of what it's like to be a POW in brutal captivity for years. The book also has his reflections on the present-day U.S.. Here, he is refreshing, and can be brutally candid on such institutions as the South's best-known anachronistic walled military place.

Mostly though, it's the love story between what he and his wife have been though these years. No candy coating: A rare American hero with the straight story.

Book Description

Easy to read, easy to follow, and easy to understand, in this book the authors define and demystify the unique language of consensual sadomasochism, examine the psychological power of erotic dominance and submission, provide a carefully considered guide for safe SM play, and explain how SM can be an activity of intense intimacy and sophisticated erotic theater, as well as one of simple sexual pleasure. Combining their extensive professional credentials with deep personal experience, the result is an original introduction to a widely misunderstood realm of human sexuality.

"Henkin and Holiday have done erotic explorers a wonderful favor. Their useful book is concise and clearheaded in all things SM. But the most radical concept for many will surely be the notion to simply have fun." - Mark Thompson, editor of Leatherfolk

I've actually recomended this book more often than my own. That's because you're holding what is without doubt, one of the finest and most useful books on BDSM ever written. It can help you distinguish between looking and seeing. Not for skimmers........this one is soul food. - Guy Baldwin, M.S. author of TIES THAT BIND and SlaveCraft

Henkin and Holiday offer a very useful book about BDSM for mainly beginners in the scene but also for anyone who just like staying on top of opinions about BDSM. The book is well organized with a glossary right after a good discussion of special terms used in BDSM. Likewise sample negotiation forms are found at the end of the chapter where the procedure is explained. The largest section of the book concerns safety but not necessarily the kind you might find in "On the Safe Edge" or "Learning the Ropes". Here the focus is on learning about yourself first, learning about your partner second, and then how to explore BDSM. Throughout the idea that BDSM is primarily a pleasureable partnership is embraced and indeed in my personal experiences the best SM or Ds relationships are partnerships. Neither Henkin nor Holiday say that their way is the only way but they give solid reasons for their opinions and make suggestions based on years in the scene and as scholars and educators. This is definately a book I have proud to have in my library and one I recommend to people new to BDSM. - TammyJo Eckhart from kinkybooks.com

4 out of 5 stars Informative.......2007-09-25

If you are exploring the lifestyle, this book is a good general overview of what to expect. But, as with any "how to" book, real life experiences vary. This book is very explicit and informative. It is tastefully written to inform the reader, not tantilize. The book accomplishes its objective.

3 out of 5 stars Consensual Sadomasochism.......2007-09-17

The book was very well written. For those that are new to the lifestyle it is a good starting book, as it explaines what to learn as to what you and your partner like. For those in the lifestayle sometimes it is a good thing to review and learn something new from a book that has been revised.
The book express important facts ,CPR,First Aid.

A very interesting read. This book will allow you to enter what some see as the mirky world of sado-masochism safely. Communication is key - especially in China.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Done!!.......2001-12-19

Written by two long time members of the SM community, Consensual Sadomasochism offers a great "intro" to consensual power exchange play. The authors display a considerable breadth of knowledge and a wonderfully tolerant and open attitude toward all forms of BDSM play. The book is easy to read and follow and covers SM "basics," including fundamental concepts like safe words, limits, negotiation, and consent. The book contains good, if somewhat limited, descriptions of basic SM play (bondage, spanking, clamps, etc). There is also a good section on finding partners and how to find the SM community, along with a bibliography.

The authors did a wonderful job putting this book together.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Looking for the perfect horse?.......2007-03-11

I initially purchased this book 4 years ago. We were in the process of looking for a horse, but had no experience. Our first purchase was based on what the sellers stated about him...ie. "calm, easy to ride." Turned out they were not very truthful. In this book, you will soooooo much valuable information on how to find the type of horse your looking for based on physical attributes of the animal. Did you know the number and placement of swirls on a horses head and body can affect his temperament? Using Linda's physical evaluations has enabled us to buy, not one, but 3 PERFECT horses for our family. I still consider myself "green" when it comes to horses, but after a lot of practice, I am extremely confident in my ability to judge temperament, and conformation. Just a few months ago, I helped a friend who has much more experience find the perfect friend. She swears I'm some sort of horse whisperer, but unfortunately I'm not. I've just taken my time and learned to look at the horse from top to bottom. This book has saved me so much money and heartache by helping me eliminate animals who would be too much for me. This is a book for new and experienced people. If you already have an animal who's presenting a challenge, this book can help you understand how your horse thinks and can help you change his/her personality by introducing T-touch methods to help improve your horses overall well being. I now have two copies because I took my first copy everywhere with me and misplaced it. This book is THAT good!

2 out of 5 stars A discussion book rather than a work of science.......2005-09-04

If you are considering buying this book make sure you read all the reviews to ensure that you go in with your eyes wide open. Linda Tellington-Jones could be described either as airey-fairey mystic snake oil salewoman or unconventional horse woman. I guess it depends on your point of view.

The book itself is rather amusing, and if you buy it with a bit of a spirit of adventure - much like buy a ouija board for a bit of a laugh then you won't be disappointed.

The vast majority of the book looks at typing horse personalities by their physical features. This assumes that either a horse is affected by their physical features i.e. they may be more spooky because they have little eyes and can't actually see very well OR that a horse somehow manages to affect it's features through personality i.e a suspicious horse will have a screwed up little mouth because he makes screwed up little faces all the time ...

Of course the problem with this is ... well... we know what happens when people make these assumptions about other people. "Everyone with a big nose is obsessed with money" or "all fat people are jolly". It just doesn't work like that.

If you want a bit of fun, it can while away an hour or two comparing horse's pictures and their actual personalities and deciding whether they match the book's description.

At the end of the book there are some TTouch massage type movements - as always you can't just have a description of the movement it's got to have some fancy name like 'bearpaw' or something.

There is also a description of ground exercises - the most useful part of the book actually - in the last 5 pages. The dressage whip is called a 'wand' and they explain why and there is also a page explaining why they use a stallion chain on all their horses (I'm not convinced by that bit actually)...

If you are after some serious science or even practical horsemanship, give this book a miss. If you don't mind the odd wander in wonderland and a bit of entertainment give it a go.

1 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected.......2005-08-10

This book is not about doing TTouch on your horse. There is only a tiny section in the back about that. So why is it called 'Getting in TTouch'? There needs to be a summary paragraph on Amazon so people don't buy this book expecting it to be something it is not. I want my money back.

This book is about reading your horse's personality from things like headshape and hair swirls.

5 out of 5 stars OK I know it sounds impossible but............2005-05-10

I have to say that I've used TTouch on all my animals. Years ago when this was first being intoduced my ex-husband and I took our palamino quarterhorse, who had been 30 day wonder trained before we got her, to a private session. Imagine a freaked out mare, head held high, dancing and spooking at everything. Thats what Sugar was like. By the time we sold her she was steady and trusting again in large part due to what we learned at that session. It was absolutly amazing. I'm not saying this works overnight. Like anything good it takes time. Since then I have used it on everything ( and I do mean everything ) from dogs to my daughters snakes. And I have never seen it NOT bring an animals stress level down. I can't say enough about this. By the way that was 15 years ago. That should tell you something also. This has stood the test of time and been tried by thousands of people. Try it, you have nothing to lose. Better yet try it with you using the Centered Riding principle(Sally Swift) and I bet you get result that blow your socks off.

5 out of 5 stars Multipurpose reading.......2005-03-13

One does not have to believe in the method, reasonable doubts that it just could work is plenty enough. Read try and enjoy it together with your horse, or just read. Even if you never try it. To spend a time, to keep mind open...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!.......2006-12-13

This book gives insight into how engineering affects our daily life. It also is inspiring to read how real women developed their passion into careers. Great gift for young adults.

5 out of 5 stars All Engineers Would Be Proud.......2006-08-10

This gorgeously created and illustrated 'coffee table' book is one I've recommended to all my woman engineer friends. Also useful for Guidance Counselors, parents of young girls, (actually, my nephew admits to paging through it too!) and anyone who is interested in what engineers really do. The fact that it highlights women is great for us women, but don't let it mislead you. The information, the ideas, the extremely well-written text (plainspeak, hurray!) will inspire anyone male or female who enjoys the business of 'solving problems'.

5 out of 5 stars Changing Our World.......2006-05-02

Many people may not realize it, but engineers' work touches nearly every aspect of our lives. This full-color account celebrates the lives of more than 200 women involved in all disciplines of engineering from aerospace to agriculture, and entertainment to environment. Fourteen inspiring chapters introduce these women of science and their journeys into once male-dominated professions, chronicling their success stories. The final chapter challenges young women to "follow their hearts" and consider a career in engineering. The book features an index of women profiled who have truly "changed our world."

5 out of 5 stars Highly Readable Book, fun for students and teachers alike.......2002-06-13

This is an amazing book! Opening it for teaching ideas (which are abundant and enticing), I find myself reading for pure pleasure, as I would in a rich anthology -- dipping in and out of the book and finding, on every page, something compelling, delightful, and relevant. Different from most creative writing texts, even the authors' exposition is engaging, like a good conversation with trusted teachers who know their students well: know their interests and frames of reference, their misunderstandings and apprehensions about writing, and their needs for a wide range of choices of writing activities. I've been writing and publishing for years, but I'm getting many new ideas for myself, including different ways to keep a journal and kinds of poems I'd never thought about writing. I can hardly wait to share this book with my students.

5 out of 5 stars A really good book for new writers.......2002-05-25

This book is very useful for student writer groups! I had worn out the exercises in THE CRAFT OF POETRY; this book has maybe a couple of hundred exercises, some in a special section and some at the end of each chapter. The exercises are fun and productive, mostly easier than those in THE CRAFT OF POETRY, and they are in several genres. I am glad I found this.
