Book Description
This instruction book along with the accompanying
DVD and
CD is the perfect start for an Absolute Beginner of any age on the Violin!
There are many familiar folk, fiddle, sacred and classical melodies with short warm-up exercises and study pieces to advance students technically in an easy and enjoyable way! Simple duets, scales, a note-reading worksheet, glossary and practice chart are also included in this book along with many graphs to show left-hand finger placement.
This ABCs of Violin Book 1 is the first in a series of five books. The method features melodies by composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Dvorak, Mozart, Schubert and Tchaikovsky. Popular fiddle tunes like Arkansas Traveler, Irish Washer Woman and Turkey in the Straw, and some of the world's most loved melodies like Amazing Grace, Ave Maria and Home of the Range appear. Christmas Carols Jingle Bells, Joy to the World, O Come All Ye Faithful, The First Noel and Deck the Halls, and Hanukah favorites My Dreydl and Hanukah are all included.
Each book in the series has its own piano accompaniment book to facilitate study and recital performance.
The ABCs of Duets Book has harmonies to many of the melodies in ABCs of Violin Book 1.
Author Janice Tucker Rhoda teaches Violin for the Absolute Beginner classes at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education in Massachusetts.
Customer Reviews:
Perfect for my 10 y/o.......2007-10-07
We tried another video that started out assuming too much.
This book/video combination is perfect. We are in an isolated area without access to a violin teacher, and my 10 y/o dd is blasting through this book like a house on fire, mostly self-teaching. And we can stand being in the same room with her after only 2 weeks!
Violin Book.......2007-07-15
The book makes the beginning steps of learning the violin amazingly easy, very easy to follow. Excellent!!!!
A couple of drawbacks, but a very good choice.......2007-07-05
I purchased this book and the accompanying DVD based on the reviews I read here. The book has been extremely helpful in conjunction with the DVD, especially since after over 30 years of not playing, I am now back at the beginner level. I would like to emphasize that the DVD is almost a necessity to the book, your lessons will be much easier if you have both. Definitely with the investment.
I do have a couple of comments regarding the DVD.
Tuning:
The pitch pipe used on the DVD by Ms. Rhoda to tune the violin strings was not helpful to me at all. In fact, it was much, much more helpful to hear the sounds of the strings as they were being plucked and how the string should sound when tuned. You do not get that with the pitch pipe Ms. Rhoda used. It was impossible for me to tune using the sound of the pitch pipe and as a result, I had to replay (at least 7 times) the extremely short section where Ms. Rhoda is tuning the strings by plucking, to tune my violin properly. The emphasis for violin tuning should have been placed on hearing the strings (while plucking) as they are tuned, not just using a pitch pipe OR equal emphasis given to both.
Holding the Bow:
For me, in holding the bow, I found that if I held the bow hairs flat against the strings while playing, more often than not, I would play two strings at the same time (unintentionally). However, while watching the DVD, I noticed that Ms. Rhoda seemed to hold her bow so that the edge of the bow hairs were in contact with each string while playing, not the flat side. I tried it and I'm able to play one string at a time, which is what I wanted. I've also seen fiddlers/violinists play using the edge of the bow hairs, and it seems to work for me. However, this was not referenced on the DVD.
Overall, after reading reviews for some of the other beginning lesson books, I feel this was the best choice, but because of the above drawbacks to the DVD, I only gave it three stars.
It is not book for absolute beginner, far from it.......2007-06-16
I myself recently started to study violin at ripe age of 37. I can see how this book may enhance my ability to play it. But, and this is big but, I took already 4 private lessons from professional violin teacher and I am still taking it, and not about to drop them very soon. You have to know how to hold bow, you should know how to place it correctly on strings, how to hold violin (different people hold it differently, but there's totally wrong way to hold it), you must know how to place your fingers on fingerboard, how to hold your palm under it. This book doesn't say anything about it. People you need teacher who can show you by example placing your elbow, fingers, in right position. This is not playing harmonica, or strumming easy chords on guitar, or even whistle on recorder (and I can play more or less on all those musical instruments). This is The VIOLIN. And this is not the book for absolute beginner. Let someone to show you how to start handle it correctly.
Written for beginner musicians by a natural musician.......2007-06-10
I love this book, I'm new to the violin and I loved it. It is truly for the beginner, [to the violin] but I understand how some people can get confused. This book is brilliant at instructing someone how to learn the violin, but it's written by someone with a musical inclination, and being read by some people who don't. If you have no idea how to read music, I suggest you purchase a supplemental music theory book. If you don't know how to hold a violin merely from looking at it, I don't know if you are the best candidate for playing one. Sorry, it's just the truth. Brilliant book though.

Not like the original one.......2007-07-13
I had really liked the original version of this book which is meant for slightly older children. So I got this for my 14 month old daughter. She is least interested in it although she loves books and has many favorites. I didnt like it much either. There is no rhythm and the text doesnt flow very well. In fact, the last few pages just contain a bunch of alphabets thrown in as if in a hurry to finish the book. There are better books out there!
A new baby "basic".......2007-06-27
Have to have this book if you have a newborn. Scholastic has a really fun DVD that adds a fun carribean inspired tune to the book too. My children have LOVED this book since they were very young and still respond to it.
maraca upset.......2007-05-13
I ordered this book knowing that I liked the content, but I was very excited about the bonus shaker....my 7 month old son didn't let go of it for a day....the second time he dropped it from his high chair it broke in two, which was sad. it was very cute for the day and 1/2 that it lasted.
Only Half the Story...Get The Paperback Too!.......2007-03-27
There are two versions of the book. This board book edition is great for infants and up to age 2, since they are still chewing on books. However, it only tells half the story, to the point where the lowercase letters make it up the tree and fall out. The story ends there just fine and it is a good stopping place, since a board book can only be so many pages.
I was surprised to find this out when we saw the larger paperback book edition at our doc's office. The story continues with the aftermath of the fall, where the capital letters rush in to help their lowercase offspring untangle from the big pile. It is quite hilarious, with the letters sporting various slings and bandages, etc.
I would get the board book for the baby, and be ready to pick up the paperback later on. My three-year old is ready (most days) to handle the lighter, longer book. He loves taking his fridge magnet letters (which come in both upper and lowercase) to act out the story.
A great, colorful read.
Chicka Chicka abc.......2007-03-09
My fourteen month old grandson loves this book, a shorter version of the original that my kindergarden students adore. Anything by Bill Martin and John Archambault is excellent for developing early literacy.

A really good system........2007-08-01
I used to play cello in highschool and then dropped it completely for 20 years. I am finding these three, beginning, intermediate, & advanced books very useful.
The beggining book has a nice mixture of melodies and instructions, and I quickly got back up to speed. To get the most out of it, you really need to sit and read it as well, small phrases can be passed over that are very important, such as "try to think about the musical phrase while you play" is easy to overlook while practicing, but important to keep in mind.
Having played before I am finding myself flipping back and forth between books, but even the begginning book has some lovely pieces that with changes in emphasis or repeats become compelling pieces for performance.
Good for the absolute beginner!.......2007-05-10
We recently ordered this book for my adult (40 something) son who had never played cello before. He finds the book to be more than adequate and he is enjoying learning from it.
Best system for an adult beginner!.......2006-03-24
I wish I had studied the cello years ago, but it's better late than never! I started with this book for the Absolute Beginner and 'am now in ABCs of Cello book 3. This cello book 1 starts out easy with familiar tunes and warm-up exercises. It explains the staff and bass clef which is not the same as a violinists clef, the treble clef. You learn all the basic notes on all the strings in this book in 1st position and as you move along in the upper books you learn "shifting" which means you move your arm and fingers up the neck of the cello. All these books cover alot and are very basic at the same time.
Cello is the best!!
Treat Yourself to the ABC's of Cello for the Absolute Beginner!.......2006-03-20
Whether you are an adult beginner or a parent who is looking for a good introductory book for your child, definitely get this book. Janice Tucker Rhoda is a well-known musical educator, and I purchased this book based solely on her name. Her instruction gives the warm-ups, scales and rhythm exercises that you need to learn any instrument, but she quickly gives you real music to play.
The graphics pick up on the simple, easy-to-understand approach, with no cutsie-pie graphics to distract. You need that when you are sitting so far from your music.
I initially started with a Suzuki book, but think that this is much better because it has a more structured approach.
I highly recommend this book. I was especially pleased with it because, as a violinist, I didn't read the bass clef and, quite frankly, was afraid that I would have difficult with it. I'm pleased to find that, with this book, I'm finding it quite easy.
As with learning any musical instrument, having the help of a professional instructor--along with this book--can help you learn much faster--and avoid picking up bad habits.
I found it easy to learn cello!.......2006-03-04
I never read music before but was able to learn it with the simple instructions in the beginning. As an absolute beginner on the cello it seemed easy for me to figure out. It shows where the notes are in relation to the strings. Great songs too!!

A great way to read to your young child..the music is catchy and you will both soon be singing along. We enjoy the entire series..our favourite remains "Opposites".
Not as good as others in the series.......2006-06-04
The lyrics on this CD/book are rather unimaginative with generally just one line for each letter sung and then repeated. Wee Sing and Learn 123 is a much better book with much more to catch the interest

I actually moved into book two before I was finished with book one completely, but I still go back into book one for refresher exercises. At least once a week I have a practice session where I go back to basic things to work on fine tuning technique, and this graduated system is very good for that.
Listening to good cellists and a teacher can help you with phrasing and musicality, but this book is very good on basic technical information with an ephasis on getting the finger placements correct and working each one.
Learned so much in this INTERMEDIATE book!.......2006-03-24
This cello book 2 covers so much. It has an intense introduction of 2nd position on the cello, over 40 tunes including familiar fiddle tunes like Turkey in the Straw. Lots of preparation exercises (called warm-ups in the book), scales and arpeggios, triplet and 16th note rhythms, etc. As a beginner a year and a half ago, I never thought I'd be this advanced, but I owe it to this series of books. I am now in ABCs of Cello book 3, a real gem, but you have to follow the system and begin with book 1 of the series which I did.
Cello is the best!

Familiar, yet not quite.......2007-09-22
We bought this book for our two yr old daughter, who is really into following along with songs and has us read quite a few song-books. The book comes with a CD which is a great help to me, as I am not the greatest singer, yet it also helps my daughter learn the tunes and the words to the songs in the book. The book and CD have the familiar tunes from when I was a child, but have changed the words to match the music and the letter you are singing about. A lot of fun to do with our daughter.
Wow, great for even young toddlers!!.......2007-08-09
My daughter started listening to this cd when she was 18 months and has loved it ever since. It's a favorite in the day care she goes to and that I work at. The management had to buy a book and cd for every class in the building! Kids love it!
Lots of fun.......2007-07-25
I really like singing these songs to my daughter. The books is loads of fun. My only negative (besides the fact that I can never get these songs out of my head) is that the CD singing is a bit cheesy. But it is a kids CD, so should I really complain?
Adorable and Sing-able!.......2007-05-18
This is my 3-year-old daughter's favorite book. The lyrics are short and clever, the tunes are familiar, and the CD is great. She's already learned most of the songs and sings them over and over. This could be a problem but they're so much fun that I actually enjoy hearing them--over and over. The book has become part of our bedtime ritual. We sing one song together each night before lights out.
Fabulous.......2007-04-05
My younger son (now 19 months) received this book and CD set for his first birthday. He and his 5 year old brother both love it. The songs are so cute. They are all set to familiar tunes, with exceptionally creative lyrics depicting each letter of the alphabet. We keep the book and CD in the car and my older son requests it as soon as we get in. If we arrive at our destination before we reach Z, we have to stay in the car until the end. Unlike some other kids' CDs, this is one that parents will enjoy just as much.

The emphasis on these books is on finger positions and placement, and by the time you get to the third book you may have outgrown this series. (They say a virtuoso cellist doesn't think about placement, just uses the finger that best fits the flow of the piece and the transitions needed - but it is important to learn these things, then take liberties.) I don't think any book can help you with intonation, phrasing and musicality (listen to YoYo Ma CDs for that), but this is a very good practice series with a good variety of pieces.
Learning so much in this ADVANCED Cello book!.......2006-03-24
I made it to this ABCs of Cello Book 3 and as an adult beginner a year ago and a half ago, I thought it would be impossible for me to make it this far on the cello, but I have. I owe it to the ABCs of Cello books! I started out with book 1, then 2. This book 3 has an intense introduction and coverage of 3rd position. It covers double-stops (playing 2 strings at once), fiddle tunes, forward extensions, shifting exercises, 3 pages of scales and spicatto bowing. Alot of warm-up drills and over 40 tunes!
It's great! Cello is the best!
Feedback.......2006-03-23
For the beginner , this book is a waste of money. For some one who is more than a beginner, it is acollection of musical pices ranging form the beginner to advanced, and there fore may be useful. It is essentially devoid of instruction.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful book for beginning adults..........2003-12-31
This book is a great start to beginning adults' relationship with the viola. The exercises and warm-ups provide students with various opportunities to master specific skills before approaching the complexities of a piece. The selection of pieces are vast: folk songs, familiar tunes, ethnic songs and classical pieces. This makes it interesting and exciting for the adult student, whose musical taste can be diverse. I find that this book is a great introduction to the instrument without being scary, too easy, too childish or too complicated.
Book Description
Imogen Holst's brilliantly lucid book introduces the reader to the language of musical terms, highlighting and analysing the historical development of music's texture, harmony, and form. The perfect complement to The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Music, it can be read by anyone - absolute beginners and those who wish to consolidate and extend what they already know. But it not only informs: ultimately, for performers and listeners alike it encourages livelier participation.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent introduction and reference........2004-05-16
With this guide, the rudiments of music become accessible to the busiest lover of music.
authoritative.......2001-04-12
Ahem. In case you're wondering, the author of this wonderful introduction to music is Imogen Holst, daughter of Gustav Holst and a brilliant musician in her own right--as well as a supurb writer of lucid prose. The introduction is by Benjamen Britten. Who are Gustav Holst and Benjamen Britten? Along with Ralph Vaughn Williams, the most famous and highly regarded British composers of the twentieth century, that's who. (If you're one of the few people on this one who haven't heard Holst's THE PLANETS, you're in for a treat.) So forget Elmo what's-his-name, and learn music from someone who really, really knows what she's talking about.
(Also check out Gustav Holst's favorite piece, EGDON HEATH.)
THE place to start.......2001-04-08
It's very sad to find so many people systematically brainwashed into believing everything a few decades old is "outdated"--this belief is pure superstition. It's very sad to feel constrained to point out the bleedingly obvious (as comedian John Cleese would put it): 1) the fundamentals of music HAVE NOT CHANGED since this book was first published. 2) What is good is what ENDURES.
Dinosaur Act.......2000-07-21
If your intent is to study a comprehensive introduction to the theory of music - this is not the book you're looking for. Although it is adequately thorough, the book's explanations are poorly organized and consistently cluttered with unnecessary & outdated commentary. For example, the book goes so far as to chide electronic instruments as "gloomy" and "hollow," insisting they have nothing to offer a serious musician. ABC of Music was published in 1963 and repeatedly shows its age. I've yet to see an adequate music theory companion, however, if you are strictly intent on being snooty about your compositions, Music Fundamentals: Through Pitch Structures and Rhythmic Design by Elvo S. D'Amante is worth the extra expense.
recommended.......1999-06-27
This is a gloss that moves very quickly from elementary notation to dodecaphony. It is moderately pleasant to read and fairly clear for the novice. But beware: It is British, so it speaks of crotchets and quavers, rather than of quarter notes and eighth notes. It discusses dissonance in terms of Helmholtz's discredited beat theory. Also recommended (very much): PENTATONIC SCALES FOR THE JAZZ-ROCK KEYBOARDIST by Jeff Burns.
Book Description
Janice Tucker Rhoda's phenomenally successful series, The ABCs of Bass, owes much of its success to the wonderful original material and to the sensitive arrangements of classical, folk, fiddle, rock `n' roll, jazz and other popular melodies. After many years of teaching children and adults the author has developed a simple and enjoyable approach for studying the String Bass.
*The ABCs of Bass for the Absolute Beginner to Intermediate Student, Bass Book 1 covers 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Half Positions. There are 49 Melodies, Finger Graphs, Warm-ups, Scales, Easy Duets, a worksheet for note-recognition, a glossary and practice chart.

Something for everyone........2007-09-09
I ordered this book, wondering whether there could indeed be a book that would make true on its promise to be of equal value to both beginning and intermediate students. But working throug it, it turned out to be just that: every bass player, whether just beginning or more advanced, will get pleasure from going over the exercises. And going through it one picks up or revives useful bits of knowledge. A little gem, highly recommended.
Easy as Pie!.......2004-12-23
I've played bass guitar for 6 years and wanted to learn string bass. This book was easy as 1 2 3. All the finger graphs showed me where the notes are.
There are 49 songs, alot of familiar, alot of new ones. In the back of the book there are duets, scales, a glossary and practice chart.
Worked great for me! It's says there's a book 2 on the back of the book--that's next for me.
Best Beginning Bass Book I have seen!.......2003-12-17
"How I wish I had had this book when I was just beginning to teach the bass years ago. It is so clear and straightforward, incorporating everything needed for the beginning bass student. With other bass books I have worked with this is not the case. Now I am relieved that I have this resource and can feel completely comfortable and confident about the material I am using.
This is by far the best beginning bass book I have seen!"
