Nice man, wandering story..........2007-10-04

I had to force myself to finish this book, simply because I didn't want to waste my money by leaving it when I was tempted to. It was interesting to realize that an actor whose work I had appreciated came from such a spare beginning, but by halfway through the book, the continuous wandering asides and disclaimers of the author so overwhelmed the narrative that I could barely tolerate it. It seems to me that the story could have been told to greater effect with half the words!

MEASURE OF A MAN does not measure up.......2007-09-21

Wow, a book about Sidney Poitier. An outstanding actor with a book that just does not give him true justice. The reading tends to be dry and lacks substance. His life struggles could have been the story of any man or woman, black or white. The writing and editing are weak in some sections.

You should rent or buy one of Poitier's movies instead. His movie roles show his true skills.

I've always been smitten with Poitier's voice--his diction and control on film, the flow of his words as they travel in and around ideas during interviews--so I read THE MEASURE OF A MAN with an ear for his voice. I wondered, Is it translatable to print? It is, but that means allowing Poitier's thoughts to meander until they find their point, and that his thoughts are less formulated (or formal) and more "in his own words," than they might be if they were written by a biographer. (I read just enough "You know?"s "You hear me when I tell you?"s and "You follow?"s to feel like he was talking to me, but not too many to be annoyed.) I read to imagine what it might be like to have a conversation with Poitier. The book reinforced what I already knew--I'd be as intimidated as heck--but it also gave me the courage to think I'd be able to speak my mind.

As an editor, I read Poitier's book because I wanted to know how he defines a "spiritual" autobiography. Is it a I-Was-A-Sinner-But-I-Found-Jesus-And-Now-I'm-Saved chronology? Is it about how Christianity or another faith influenced his life? Neither. Poitier examines the people, events, circumstances, beliefs, and so on, which have related to, consisted of, or affected his "spirit," and, in doing so, he writes about childhood experiences in the Bahamas, his changing perceptions of his parents, how he adapts to living in the United States, his approach to acting and filmmaking, and his attitude toward fatherhood. He also shares a debate a friend and he had about the Basic Truth of Nature, a debate worth every second of reading it takes to get to.

Is THE MEASURE OF A MAN going to satisfy readers interested only in Poitier's film career? No, but I urge them to read it anyway, if for no other reason than to find out how his "spirit" influenced the films he starred in.

No Real Estate investor should be without this book. Whether you are in residential, commerical, or industrial real estate, understanding the concepts and calculations in this book is a must. The reading can be a little dry, but the information is vitally important.

A Must Read Book For Any Real Estate Investor.......2007-09-06

If you are serious about making money in real estate you must read this book. Gallinelli explains in plain English and with plenty of examples, how you objectively evaluate any real estate deal. To evaluate objectively means you use math - the numbers - to make informed decisions. Gallinelli explains each math concept, e.g. discounted cash flow, net present value, internal rate of return, etc., and why it's important. This is a quick read book. In a few hours you'll see why those who understand the math greatly increase their probability of being successful in real estate (or anything else). My only criticism is, there is no index.

One last point. I sent the author a question and he personally responded back - in detail - that same day. Now that's customer service.

Very technical read. Although the content was helpful in learning formulas and the technical terms, it was not an easy read for me.

I found Bubble Proof: Real Estate Strategies that Work in any Market by Tonja Demoff more suited for me.

I have just finished reading "What Every Real Estate Investor Needs To Know About Cash Flow" and must say that Frank's ability to explain often complicated financial concepts is quite remarkable. This book teaches real estate finance in a language that other authors seem unable to communicate. Frank has a gift for which I am truely very grateful.

This book is good if you are not familiar with NOI or the time value of money. If you truly understand those concepts you could probably do without. Good resource though and he does pound you with the idea of how to analyze a deal. Some useful info in here but very dry. I believe his other book about how to finance investment properties was better.

I found this book to be extremeley helpful in its content and uses. It was the most informative book out there and was very detailed. There were many ideas presented that I hadn't even thought of, and I found that it was easily readable. I am so much more prepared in my home for any emergency and I am so much safer after reading this book. This book presents a step by step guide that saves you from hours of research and headache. I wish I had found this book sooner.

Interesting book, but unconvincing and poorly written.......2007-09-27

I hate to be too critical of this book, because I did enjoy reading it and I think it is well worth the money, but I hope Spigarelli reads the customer reviews and hires a good editor before turning out his second edition. There are many, many careless errors in the book that make me believe that some of the instructions may be just as careless. For instance, "approximate" and "proximate" are not interchangeable. The information regarding food storage, particularly the sources of information (e.g., researchers at BYU) reveal the Mormon origins of much of the information. The medical information seems to me (as a layman) to be just plain absurd. For instance, he recommends storing 200 Phenergan tablets (that's a lot of nausea), but only 100 tablets of "acetamine" (??), a couple vials of Pitocin (I suppose we'll be inducing labor at home) and 50 Valium tablets (including two vials of the stuff for injection). I could imagine going to my doctor and asking for a prescription for all those little goodies. My guess is that he'd prescribe something else for me (i.e., a good anti-psychotic). Of course, there's also a recommended arsenal of various types of guns and thousands of rounds of ammo (probably for guarding all the prescription drugs...). Nope, maybe I should be giving it two stars instead.

I thought the book gave a lot of excellent information. I am an old Boy Scout so there is a lot of information in there. I have supplimented the book with a Survival training book that talks about plants, shelters, general survival type of information.

Disorganized and unrealistic.......2007-09-01

I bought this book on the strenght of other reviews, and that was a mistake. It is disorganized and unrealistic.

Realistically speaking, we should all aim to prepare for a Katrina-type disaster: one that affects a wide region, with the severe effects of total lack of services lasting 2-4 weeks. This book wants me to prepare a year's worth of stored food. To fulfill this plan, I'd have to move to a farm so I could grow food, raise animals, and have enough room to store the amount he reccomends. It sure isn't going to work in my one-bedroom aparment.

The overall organization of the book is awful - no planning involved in the order of chapters. The first 2/3 of the book are food storage and preparation. If you really want to learn how to grow crops, raise animals, grind your own flour, make your own leather, can/pickle/smoke/preserve your own food - you're better off buying books on those specific subjects. This one goes over them in enough detail (and bad writing) to be boring, but not enough to actually teach you how. Even more ridiculous, he details so many preparations that require electricity. If we have roads and electricity and whatnto, probably I'm not living off my stored foods anyway - and how many of us can set up our own solar power grid sufficient to run the freezer, household appliances, water heater, well pump, whatever?

And then the final 1/3 glosses over preparations for a 2-4 week disaster when it should be focusing on them. If we have a Katrina-type problem, I need to be able to take care of myself until services are reasonably restored enough to either live reasonably, or get out of the area. And if the disaster affects the whole country and there is nowhere to go.... Aside from buying your own farm/ranch in the wilds, living off solar power, etc, you're out of luck.

So, long story short, if you're like me - if you want to be prepared for an act of terrorism, a flood, a fire, a hurricane or tornado, that sort of thing, buy the books below instead.

Overall Good: Beware the Dietary Advise!.......2007-08-02

Spigarelli has put together a great how-to book and I recommend it highly. Where he falls short is supporting an out-dated food pyramid. A healthy diet becomes even more important after a catastrophe.

As a master's degree candidate in nutrition, I found glaringly inaccurate statements regarding animal proteins (meat and dairy) as they relate to a "proper diet". The book has been updated since its original date of publish, but the chapters on food choices seem to have been left untouched. I recommend tweaking his recommendations away from the large amounts of animal proteins and plus up the grains/legumes/vegetables and enhance the supplementation to boost B12 and D. The Standard American Diet (SAD) is leading us to death/disease/discomfort/ailments at very young ages so why continue that diet after a crisis when you may very well have no access to medical assistance? That simply does not compute.

I shared the dietary chapters with doctors, teachers and colleagues and they reacted just as I did. "What year was THAT written?" was said quite a bit. One of the many roads that have brought us to the precipice of crisis is the misuse of land and water toward keeping animals and the pollution derived therefrom, not to mention the negative effect of animal proteins to the human body. Even after a crisis, I cannot imagine the giving of precious land and water over to livestock when crops will sustain us.

Again, this is a very good book and Spigarelli should be commended on a job well done. I would just like to stress the fact that you should inspect the food recommendations more closely as the "conventional wisdom" regarding the food pyramid over the years is off base.

With the new tv shows showing actual survival skills in the wild my family and I have developed a real interest in this topic. I am enjoying the book. It was written in a very easy and understandable way. I feel confident that with this book by my side that I could survive quite well in a variety of situations.

What about cabin avalanche?.......2007-09-19

I found this book to thoroughly take me through the fundamentals of survival, however, I am always thinking of some very particular situations that I could find myself in that weren't addressed.

For instance, what about the "trapped in a cabin by avalance" that we're all fearful of? I play it over and over in my head. Most likely it would be 3 or 4 of us on a weekend ski trip. I've always felt that it would be best to go ahead and turn on the others very early on in the event of an avalance instead of waiting for starvation to decimate the group.

For one, each day trapped in that cabin means that everyone will be burning calories, making themselves thinner and thinner, not leaving much of a meal if natural course is left to do the dirty work of finishing them off. Not to mention, you might be too weak for a death match days later.

Also, turning on them early will almost assuredly be unexpected, since ditching ethical behavior at first opportunity is not the norm and especially with so much food still in the fridge. You're going to need that element of surprise, b/c let's face it, when you start helicoptering that timber axe over your head, the line will clearly be drawn in the sand and its 1 versus 3 at that point. You'll need to mow them all down very quickly. Don't worry that you aren't hungry yet, as there should be plenty of snow at the windows that can be used to keep the bodies from spoiling.

But I definitely liked the informative chapter on which leaves are ok to eat and which are poisonous.

SAS Survival Handbook - Great buy.......2007-09-14

This book is full of useful and practical survival tips. Full color illustrations helps outline edible and poisonus plants. From setting up camp to tracking and killing animals this book has it all. I recommend it to anyone interested in camping and wilderness survival.

An overview on Survival.......2007-09-03

No book this size can even come close to delivering what the title claims. There are indeed some good illustrations and pointers to go along with them, but a survival manual this is not. Great for a bar on a slow night or as a coffee table book.
Why one star??-------->
Two examples of shoddy research or and lack of experience: The section on bow making is only twenty seven lines (it has a thirteen line introduction with a seven line description on how to actually make a bow. This is matched by seven more lines on how to fit the string to your new hunting weapon). Look at the Bowyers Bible, a set of three books on bow making by some of the best in the business.
The "Spear Thrower" section is flat wrong, illustrating that the author not only never made/used one before, but never saw one in use or otherwise. There are other shortfalls, but I'll keep the description to two. Don't believe me? Make one as described in the book or do a google search on "Spear throwers" or "Atlatl".
There are some things he describes well and clearly has experience with, perhaps the publisher urged him to include things beyond his experience, but that does not excuse the inclusion of manufactured "facts".
All in all good for the survival book collection with a few good bits, but lacks too many details.
Remember when reading these reviews that it is often a case of the blind leading the blind as owners of newly purchased copies are not qualified to recognize if a skill is thoroughly covered. Just because the table of contents lists a skill does not necessarily translate to the reader being able to accomplish the skill. Ask a survival school or instructor with real experience which book they would recommend. Any way you slice it, the skills must be practiced regardless of the book you buy, don't wait until you need a shelter to build one or a fire lit to attempt lighting it.

This new book provides a unified, in-depth, readable introduction to the multipredictor regression methods most widely used in biostatistics: linear models for continuous outcomes, logistic models for binary outcomes, the Cox model for right-censored survival times, repeated-measures models for longitudinal and hierarchical outcomes, and generalized linear models for counts and other outcomes.

Treating these topics together takes advantage of all they have in common. The authors point out the many-shared elements in the methods they present for selecting, estimating, checking, and interpreting each of these models. They also show that these regression methods deal with confounding, mediation, and interaction of causal effects in essentially the same way.

The examples, analyzed using Stata, are drawn from the biomedical context but generalize to other areas of application. While a first course in statistics is assumed, a chapter reviewing basic statistical methods is included. Some advanced topics are covered but the presentation remains intuitive. A brief introduction to regression analysis of complex surveys and notes for further reading are provided. For many students and researchers learning to use these methods, this one book may be all they need to conduct and interpret multipredictor regression analyses.

The authors are on the faculty in the Division of Biostatistics, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, University of California, San Francisco, and are authors or co-authors of more than 200 methodological as well as applied papers in the biological and biomedical sciences. The senior author, Charles E. McCulloch, is head of the Division and author of Generalized Linear Mixed Models (2003), Generalized, Linear, and Mixed Models (2000), and Variance Components (1992).

This book covers a wide range of topics in Biostatistics, in a comprehensive, but not overwhelming way. In my opinion this book has the potential of being useful to a broad audience, from Statisticians to other professionals who do health related research.

Dated but indespensible.......2007-08-02

Sadly, this book is more than a few years old. That said, it is still the finest single volume introduction to data security in the modern age. For clarity of description, for illustration, and for its success at communicating essential concepts and ideas without resorting entirely to mathematics, it is without peer.

Every so often I look on Amazon and hope that I'll find Schneier has penned a third edition, updating this work with the results of the AES selection process and all the other recent developments in this suddenly fast paced field. Alas, I don't think that's going to happen. But I'm not sure that it would really make any difference -- the field now evolves so swiftly that any detailed, thorough volume would be obsolete by the time it reaches the shelves.

So instead of looking for something more recent, pick up Applied Cryptography. Read it and keep it close at hand as a reference (mine is almost falling apart from years of loving use). Nothing presents the fundamentals as well. If you need to know about a new cipher, a new hash, a new encryption mode or protocol, that's what the Internet is for.

But to really understand the underlying ideas, techniques, challenges, risks, and rewards of cryptography, nothing finer exists.

The unique and original applied cryptography book!.......2007-06-27

This book is extremely complete. It briefly covers the history of cryptography. It describes the political implications of cryptography and finally it shows how cryptography can be used in applications and presents the different cryptographic algorithms.

The algorithm section starts with a number theory primer.Honestly, I have found it a little bit too thin to learn all the needed background to fully understand the algorithms but on the other side, you cannot expect a simple 600 pages book to provide that background in the latest mathematical research number theories. It has at least the merit that it did stimulate my curiosity about number theory when I have read the first edition of this book.

Another point that makes this book interesting is that at the end of each chapter presenting the various algorithms in a given category, you will get Bruce Schneier opinion on which algorithm is the best. Of course, this type of information usually become outdated real fast but it is interesting to follow his thought process and test his predictions as the book grow older.

So, if you are looking for your first cryptography book, it should be this one.

Easy to read, perfect level of detail........2007-06-07

Great Book! The author's style makes this very easy to follow, and he frequently clarifies on topics which are difficult to grasp. Most importantly, he writes from a practical point of view; the material is very grounded and applicable instead of being a math textbook. That being said, he cites over 1600 sources; the book is riddled with leads to sources with more complete coverage for those interested in the fine details. Though I have some programming experience, I don't intend to write any programs; but it is interesting to read the logic in code. It was my goal to learn about modern cryptography and I have achieved that and much more.

Excellent Introduction.......2007-03-12

This book is now in the thirteenth reprinting of it's second edition with more than a hundred thousand copies sold. It is the definitive book on cryptography from the standpoint of a general overview of what sending secret messages is all about. It is not specifically oriented to the developer, but is more general in nature. There is not enough here for the mathematically inclined to seriously research the background of all the various systems.

As such consider this to be an introductory book on cryptography in general with a bit of history, a bit of story telling, an analysis of various cryptographic protocols and systems. There is source code provided for nine common protocols, and an invitation to order a three disk system that has source code for several more algorithms, functions, systems and additional text on various subjects. This disk set can only be sent to US and Canada addresses because of export rules on cryptographic information.

This is the definitive book on the subject. The only complaint I have is that it could stand to be done over in a third edition that would bring it more up to date.

A must-have book for understanding Cryptography........2006-03-11

This book has really shed a lot of light on cryptography for me. I honestly can't put it down--I wish I had paid more attention in my statistics classes so I could be able to apply some of the stuff the author talks about better. I am about half way through the book, and I haven't gotten to the point where it's more of a chore than a pleasure to read it (something I can't about my other technical books).
Glancing through the C source code at the end of the book started me thinking on the code implementation in my efforts - although I used Java althrough my life. I am not much comfortable with the C code because I was hoping for more goodie examples. If you want some practical guidance..you may little bit uncomforatble as well. At the end of the day if you are serious about Cryptography then you really need to get a copy of this.

Awesome reference.......2006-11-05

There's minimal reading in this book, which is nice since it's good for reference. The reading that it does have is very simple with bulleted paragraphs full of information that you can't get from looking at the diagrams.
Great diagrams for industrial design students (I got this for one of my classes), gives you the measurements, reach, sight and motion range, pretty much any numeric info you need to know for the 1 percentile, 99 percentile, and 50 percentile man/woman.
Also has nice chart of child development w/descriptions of what the ave. child can do at each age, as well as diagrams for the elderly (and in wheelchair). This book is essential if you are going for product design or interior design.

This book gives great insight into what makes a great association remarkable and gives comparisons for those that are good, but not remarkable. If associations use this information correctly, they should be able to make drastic improvements in their processes. This book is an easy read and has invaluable information.

Let's start with answering the first question that you have when you look at the title. The 7 Measures of Success are:
Category 1 - Commitment to Purpose
1. A Customer Service Culture
2. Alignment of Products and Services with Mission
Category 2 - Commitment to Analysis and Feedback
3. Data-Driven Strategies
4. Dialogue and Engagement
5. CEO as a Broker of Ideas
Category 3 - Commitment to Action
6. Organizational Adaptability
7. Alliance Building
The second question is "Why do the organizations profiled here matter or relate to my organization?" To be eligible for the study, the association needed to have:
1. Been in operation for at least 20 years
2. Finished more years in the black than in the red
3. Exhibited the ability to retain members, donors, or market share during the study period
4. Had more than one CEO during the study period.
The final study group consisted of: AARP, American College of Cardiology, American Dental Association, Associated General Contractors of America, Girl Scouts of the USA, National Association of Counties, Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants, Radiology Society of North America, and Society for Human Resource Management.

Further, nine strong organizations were chosen to match the above listed nine for the analysis. These 18 pairs used the following 11 variables to identify differences:
1. Vision (core values, mission, purpose, goals)
2. Markets, Competitors, and the Environment
3. Organizational Arrangements (structures, policies, systems)
4. Use of Technology
5. Business Strategy
6. Products and Services
7. Leadership (staff, elected)
8. Community and Culture
9. Financial Health
10. Physical Setting and Location
11. Public Policy

After the analysis was completed, the "remarkable" associations excelled in the previously listed 7 measures. To further discuss those 7:

1. A Customer Service Culture - "we're here to serve you" approach
2. Alignment of Products and Services with Mission - mission is central and the products align
3. Data-Driven Strategies - gather, analyze and use data to drive change
4. Dialogue and Engagement - staff and volunteers engage on association's direction and priorities
5. CEO as a Broker of Ideas - facilitates visionary thinking throughout the association
6. Organizational Adaptability - be willing to change and NOT to change
7. Alliance Building - seek complimentary partners and projects

Next the three categories each have a chapters devoted to fleshing out their concepts:
Category 1 - Commitment to Purpose
1. A Customer Service Culture - Remarkable associations build their structures, processes, and interactions - their entire culture - around assessing and fulfilling members' needs and expectations.
2. Alignment of Products and Services with Mission - To find the right mix of products and services that align with their missions, remarkable associations willingly engage in experimentation. They doggedly protect their core purpose and related activities while investigating new initiatives. What's more, they fully expect many of their efforts to fall flat.

Category 2 - Commitment to Analysis and Feedback
3. Data-Driven Strategies - They continually track member needs and issues as well as the wider environment, then collectively analyze the data to reach a shared understanding through asking, "What do we now know? What are we going to do about it?" These associations then incorporate the findings into their strategic and operational planning. But the data collection doesn't stop there. It continues through another methodical, disciplined cycle of gathering, analyzing, and making changes because of what was learned.
4. Dialogue and Engagement - This is characterized by a close-knit, consistent culture where all association staff and volunteers not only receive the same script, in the form of the same information, but also see the potential to contribute to a blockbuster production.
5. CEO as a Broker of Ideas - To CEOs of remarkable associations, what matters is not their vision for the association but rather the members' vision. The CEO role rests with gathering consensus around a member-generated vision rather than forcing buy-in into a personal vision.

Category 3 - Commitment to Action
6. Organizational Adaptability - Remarkable associations - in the face of markedly declining membership or program revenue - quickly assessed the situation and took immediate action with no excuses.
7. Alliance Building - Secure in who they are and what they bring to an alliance, remarkable associations communicate clear expectations for each specific partnership and do not hesitate to walk away if a win-win situation does not materialize - they also are the first to admit that they cannot do everything on their own.

The bottom line was addressed in the seventh chapter - fitting with the motif of 7 measures - With a list of conventional beliefs NOT supported:
1. The smaller the board, the better - not found to be true, in fact one association added members.
2. Board members should be selected via a democratic process. - transparency not democracy was key.
3. The CEO should be an association professional and come from outside the organization and its membership. - Only three of the nine remarkable associations followed this tenant.
4. Proactive change is better. - The response to the change from the membership is more important that pro or reactive.
5. Reserves should equal 50 percent of annual expenses. - Nonprofit is a tax status NOT a mental state.

Finally, these are the keys to the "Road to Remarkable":

1. Members and mission are at the heart of remarkable associations - and members value is the blood that keeps the heart pumping.
2. Remarkable associations differ.
3. All organizations must deal with setbacks, failures, and crises, but not all of them learn from these events.

They next present basic illustrations of these concepts from Fourier analysis, partial differential equations, and complex analysis. The final part of the book introduces the reader to the fascinating subject of fractional-dimensional sets, including Hausdorff measure, self-replicating sets, space-filling curves, and Besicovitch sets. Each chapter has a series of exercises, from the relatively easy to the more complex, that are tied directly to the text. A substantial number of hints encourage the reader to take on even the more challenging exercises.

As with the other volumes in the series, Real Analysis is accessible to students interested in such diverse disciplines as mathematics, physics, engineering, and finance, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

i found the first three chapters of this book very clear and well written. i'd strongly recommend it for someone looking to learn about analysis on the real line.

Good book for reading and as a graduate student.......2006-07-19

Easy to read. My university is using this book to get the graduate students ready for the real analysis qualifying exam. So go ahead and buy this book if you're planning to work on a PhD in mathematics. If you're not planning to work on a PhD in math, this is still a good book to read if you enjoy studying about the real line.

The book begins with measure theory, integration and differentiation. These are included in Chapters 1 to 3. Then in Chapters 4 and 5, we look into Hilbert spaces. This is similar to studying finite-dimensional inner-product spaces, but here, Hilbert space is infinite-dimensional. However, the analysis is very similar. If you know some linear algebra, it should feel like as if you have already read these two chapters.

Finally in Chapters 6 and 7, we see abstract measure theory, including Hausdorff measure, and we study fractals and self-similar sets. And this concludes the book.

Also recommend Walter Rudin's Real Analysis.

Suffers from all the flaws of a 1st edition.......2005-12-18

This book has a lot of problems. Several sections are poorly written/edited. Several important named theorems are not clearly labeled. Also some of the proofs contain typos or errors. The chapter on differentiation is particularly lacking. The chapter is poorly organized and presented. There is also a glaring TeX error in the chapter.

At Princeton this book is used as part of an undergraduate course, and it shows. This is not the ideal book for a graduate level course in real analysis(though I think it would be very well suited for advanced undergrads). Too much time is spent on Lebesgue measure and integration in the first 2 chapters, and abstract measure theory is not intoduced until chapter 6. Also the Monotone Class theorem is lacking from the chapter on abstract measure theory. Also, the book only touches on functional analysis in the two chapters on Hilbert spaces (where they assume all Hilbert spaces are separable).

On the other hand, the presentations of Lebesgue measure/integration and Hilbert spaces in the book are pretty good. The exercises and problems in teh book (when stated properly) are very good and instructive. Overall this book has a lot of potential to be very good, but seems to be suffering from a lack of revision. Hopefully these issues will be fixed in later editions.

Excellent sourse for graduate analysis.......2005-07-03

This book is the best book on real analysis I have ever studied. It does a wonderful job in bridging undergraduate level with graduate level analysis. I have not seen any book that makes measure and Lebesgue theory so easy to understand.

The books begins by defining what a "measure" is all about. And the description is so intuitive and geometrical that you would wonder why you weren't taught it this way before. The book then goes into Lebesgue theory and all of it suddenly becomes so easy.

The book has plenty of wonderful examples and a good set of over 30 problems per chapter.

Elias Stein (one of the authors) is a very renowned mathematician, and one need not worry about the accuracy of the proofs in the book--they are "bullet-proof", and at the same time succinct.

If you are struggling with W. Rudin's book on Analysis, this book is a MUST for you.

A lot of computer-security textbooks approach the subject from a defensive point of view. "Do this, and probably you'll survive a particular kind of attack," they say. In refreshing contrast, Hacking Exposed, Second Edition talks about security from an offensive angle. A Jane's-like catalog of the weaponry that black-hat hackers use is laid out in full. Readers see what programs are out there, get a rundown on what the programs can do, and benefit from detailed explanations of concepts (such as wardialing and rootkits) that most system administrators kind of understand, but perhaps not in detail. The book also walks through how to use the more powerful and popular hacker software, including L0phtCrack. This new edition has been updated extensively, largely with the results of "honeypot" exercises (in which attacks on sacrificial machines are monitored) and Windows 2000 public security trials. There's a lot of new stuff on e-mail worms, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, and attacks that involve routing protocols.

The result of all of this familiarity with bad-guy tools is a leg up on defending against them. Hacking Exposed wastes no time in explaining how to implement the countermeasures--where they exist--that will render known attacks ineffective. While starting out in a new career, this book has been recommended to me time and time again. I have some background in security and penetration testing however this book takes you into a deeper understanding of how things work. I strongly recommend it for the beginner as well as the seasoned Information Security Professional.

Good learning reference for those interested in learning........2007-07-30

This book offers an excellent overview of techniques, though some outdated, to exploit and secure systems. The book is easy to read with just enough technical jargon to teach you something. It covers most major exploits and the techniques used to secure your system against them. I have tested many of the exploits and tools and found them to work very well attacking and defending. If you are new to computer security this is a must-read. If you are an expert in the field this is a great reference.

I read this book cover to cover and bookmarked half the pages with tips I want to use. It's not just a book on preventing hacks...it's full of great productivity tips as well. Nowadays, I rarely buy computer books because all the info is on the internet. But this book is an exception. The internet can't substitute for the education you'll get by walking through this one page at a time.

I had to purchase this book for college but it is a great read. One of the only textbooks that I have used that was actually interesting. They give clear examples and make it easy to follow thier explanations. Great book if you want to learn about hacking and some of the issues it involves.
