Author Nicholas Lore uses the techniques of his career-guidance network, the Rockport Institute, to make The Pathfinder a substitute for a great job counselor. Through goal setting, list making, and other techniques, the book leads readers though the process of deciding exactly what they want to do for a living and finding a way to make it happen. Lore realizes that people have different temperaments and decision-making methods, so he provides individualized advice to suit each one. He also understands that creating a new career requires courage as well as desire, so The Pathfinder devotes plenty of space to motivation and overcoming fears. While anyone looking for a new career will find direction with this guide, people who didn't know they were looking may decide to start once they go through Lore's probing self-examination process.

Customer Reviews:
WANT A CAREER YOU LOVE? GET THIS BRILLIANT BOOK.......2007-08-13
This is the masterpiece book on picking your perfect career. I went all the way through a PhD program only to discover I did not enjoy my field. I bought and read several of the popular career titles such as the Parachute book but did not find most of them particularly helpful. The exception was The Pathfinder. I read through all the reviews of it this morning and the one word that shows up in many of them is "brilliant", the best single word to describe this book. The author says that in order to have a career you love it needs to fit your "natural" talents and your personality perfectly, allow you to do work that comes most naturally to you. In addition, it must be in a field you care about, fulfill your goals and put you in a workplace environment that suits you well. I noticed that the few negative reviews of this book mostly complain that it is too long. I disagree. I found the whole book to be very useful. It is long because picking a career that fits is not easy. The book challenges you to reach toward a career that is not a compromise and shows you how to do so. It takes you through many exercises that help you discover what would make a career fit you perfectly. It teaches you how to deal with the obstacles that get in the way, most of which are self-generated internal voices that tell you to avoid risk. It takes you all the way through to the final goal.
I called the author's Rockport Institute today and got to speak with him. It turns out that this organization created the field of career coaching nearly thirty years ago and does constant research on what it takes to pick a career that fits. No wonder this is better than the other books.
Get Ready to Meet Yourself......Finally!.......2007-08-12
This book is not meant to be read overnight, but rather a guide to wake-up to everyday as you step yourself closer to the who, what, and when you really are. This book provides the "How" of getting there. Ranging from recalling your childhood dreams, discovering where you are at on your life's timeline, meeting the different parts of yourself all the way to ultimately waking up one day (for me, two years later) and realizing a vocation that fits you like your own fingerprints. This is a labor of love of discovering yourself with Nick (the author)along side you as you reflect and laugh along the way. I recommend this book highly....provided you value yourself enough to dig in and do the self-work involved in this type of journey.
Too long and windy!.......2007-08-03
I bought this book because it had a high 4.5 star rating in Amazon. I have been extremely disappointed. The author of this book must be in love with his own voice. I get the sense that the book was dictated. It wheezes on for over 350 pages. The text is like an endless blog.
Years ago, I read What Color is Your Parachute? That was a good book! Buy that one--instead of Pathfinder....unless you like endless pontification.
test in the book.......2007-06-06
hi - i actually wanted to give this test ..but not sure of...there are some tests already in the book...does this test provide much more?
Innate Ability battery.......2007-04-24
I did the innate ability battery recommended by this book and I feel a lot clearer on what I am good at, not good, at and different ways to think about myself and what might make me happy. This one clued me in in a very comprehensive way. If you are confused about what would make you happy, fulfilled, goal-oriented etc, then take this test. The other tests other than myers-briggs are not too useful. (I also did the whole workbook of what color is my parachute a couple years ago but this test feels more like knowledge I can build upon.) The cost to do the test is high but the value I feel I will get is equal plus the discussion I had with the counselor made me feel like I was talking to someone who understood where I was coming from. I would like to do more personal counseling but the book will have to do and I look forward to answering the questions to figure it out. ( i don't work for anyone or am related to anything regarding this book)

Book Description
Five hundred years before Columbus, barbaric Viking invasions ravaged North America. Pathfinder is the story of a young Viking boy left behind as the only survivor of a shipwrecked expedition. A stranger in a strange land, the boy is raised by a tribe of American Indians - the very people the Vikings had sworn to destroy. When Vikings again storm the eastern shores, waging another barbaric campaign, they slaughter the tribe that adopted the young man. Now he wages a violent personal war to stop the Vikings' trail of death and destruction.
Customer Reviews:
Great !!.......2007-06-08
Great graphic novel. Better than the movie, as most books are, though the movie held pretty true throughout.
Lacking in character development..........2007-05-10
Pathfinder is an entertainingly quick read, that offers little depth or characterization, and even limited action setpieces. The wonderful artwork is the sole saving grace here, as Christopher Shy's touch is amazingly realistic and fantastically moody.
As far as the story goes, it is a very interesting idea, made more interesting that recent discoveries have pretty much concluded that the Vikings did indeed stop off on our shores before the Europeans did; perhaps they may have had several confrontations with the Native Americans, and certainly the Norsemen may have been seen like monsters in their eyes, so the exaggerated appearances ofthe Vikings is easier to digest, allowing it to work as a myth. The Native Americans appear to be portrayed rather accurately, making this a story obviously told from their point of view, and making them immediately sympathetic.
The first act is well done, paced in just the right manner, setting up Ghost's finding and admittance to the tribe - but then jumps ahead to view Ghost as a teenager, skipping what could have been a great look into his upbringing. Instead, all we get is a few panels of him killing a mountain lion after being denied his right to a trial for manhood.
Here the story lets go, and the Vikings arrive full of pillage and slaughter, and Ghost sets out to revenge his tribe which was wiped out. What follows is nothing we haven't read over and over in the various Conan publications, except that Ghost hasn't been nearly as well developed; in fact, this is where the novel fails most - there is no characterization whatsoever. Everyone is seen only in snipets, like half-imagined phantoms; Pathfinder is given no great leadership abilities, we feel no sadness when the attacking Indians fall to their death in a trap set up by Ghost - the Vikings are ugly and mean and slaughter with no real motivation - and even Ghost, who should be the centerpiece, offers no depth. He is conflicted...but never really shows it...he's angry...but we never truly know why.
The action is limited to a few scenes, and really doesn't do much for the latter half of the novel, when the stories and characters have really failed, and some great setpieces might have bailed them out. The Vikings go out rather easily, and there's never any doubt that Ghost will exit victoriously.
This could have been a great novel, because the ideas were there - perhaps a longer series would have done the trick. In any case, I enjoyed the first read, and re-read it a couple of times hoping it would get better, but it only becomes more obvious that it's pretty to look at, but nothing to think about.
BRILLIANT! THE MOVIE HAS A TOUGH ACT TO FOLLOW!.......2006-09-16
"Pathfinder" is the graphic novel adaptation of the big screen motion picture. The book is written by Laeta Kalogridis with art by Christopher Shy. The book is based on the premise, and recent archaeological information that the Vikings came to North America many centuries before later European explorers and some 800 years before the first colonists. The Vikings came as raiders and were considered monsters and demons by the Native American tribes along the north eastern shore. When a young Viking boy is left behind, the only survivor of a shipwreck, he's adopted by the Indians and "Pathfinder" is his story.
He's found by the wife of the tribe's chief and the tribal elders debate on whether he should be allowed to stay or not. The boy speaks little as he grows up with the Indians, always under a suspicious eye because of the color of his skin. When the other young men go through the rites of manhood, Ghost, as he is named, is not allowed to join them. He's told his destiny lies along a different path. But trouble soon comes to the Indians because the Norsemen have returned to their shores, and they want the boy back! Ghost must some how lead the people who've scorned him to safety, knowing that they are no match for the swords of the vicious Norsemen.
"Pathfinder" deals with many issues...racism, isolation, becoming a man, and it scores on all of these levels. Kalogridis' story is captivating because while it is taking a guess at history, you get the feeling that this could have happened. The art of Christopher Shy is a major advantage of the book. The art is done in various shade and tone palettes that give the book a very primeval look, exactly what you might expect North America to look like in around 800 AD. Shy makes the Norsemen look larger than life...mythical creatures...giants, demons that put great fear into the Indians. Shy's work is the most evocative I've seen in a long time and is worth the price of the book alone.
Now that I've read the graphic novel I really want to see the film but I'd say the film has a pretty tough act to follow!

Book Description
High adventure and grand history from a master of the craft in a beautifully illustrated volume.
With characteristic flair, Felipe Fernández-Armesto gives us an entertaining and insightful history of world exploration. Presenting the subject for the first time on a truly global scale, Fernández-Armesto tracks the pathfinders who, over the last five millennia, lay down the routes of contact that have drawn together the farthest reaches of the world. From the maritime expeditions connecting Queen Hatshepsut's Egypt to the exotic land of Punt in the second millennium BCE, through the merchants and missionaries of the ancient Silk Roads and the great Iberian explorers of the fifteenth century, to the nineteenth-century explorations of the polar regions, interior Africa, North America, and the South Pacific, Fernández-Armesto spins a grand narrative full of character and story. Deftly embedding these explorations in the cultures, politics, and technologies of their times, he creates a history with unusual depth and breadth. Here is an intellectual adventure as rewarding as it is thrilling. 16 pages of color; 48 maps; 44 illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent!.......2007-05-10
I only write reviews for books I like, and this one I liked a lot. An excellent overview of global exploration. The author looks at pretty much every culture on the planet, and how each searched the world around it, and how humanity spread and intermingled. This is extremely readable lay history, transforming much of the dry narrative we encountered in history texts at school into engaging story. Many new insights into familiar historical scenarios. For example, L'anse aux Meadows, the famous 'Norse' ruins on Newfoundland, may in fact be the remains of a settlement of Irish monks, not vikings. They shared a similar technology. Anything found there could have been brought by St. Brendan wannabes (spindle whorls and such). Great stuff!
Might buy this one as Christmas gifts for people.
Not really explaining all the reasons why things happen.......2007-03-07
Based on the reviews below, I was very much expecting a book that will explain to me why certain facts in history REALLY happened. To be true, the book offered some interesting insights to me, like it was better to sail into (against) the wind than with the wind, as the sailors have much better chance of coming home.
On the other hand, the author sometimes makes enormous statements without somehow backing them by evidence - like he claims that American civilizations (North and South) are so different that they must clearly be coming from different origins. I am actually believing this, but I would expect more analysis and not just one paragraph stating this.
However, what I lacked the most in the book is the non-attempt to explain why things happened. I mean the author tries to do it and sometimes he succeeds. But for the most interesting events, his reasoning and solutions provided are of the "scratch-the-surface" type. His long elaboration why the Americas were discovered in 1490s (and not in other time), ends with a statement that this is because the events that happened in 1480s - WHOA, but then he does not really come back to say, what made the 1480s happen in that time...making all his analysis standing naked as it could have happened any time. And there are many more of these unfinished or unfulfilling (at least to me) statements - sort-of half-solutions.
In summary, what I really liked about the book is:
1. It frames your thinking so that you can at least ask some of the very important questions... and try to find the answers to the questions. 2. It also does a really excellent job of summarizing the key facts in the history of exploration.
But if you are looking for well-reasoned answers to questions why the events happened, you will not always find the most satisfying ones.
My dad loved this!.......2007-01-04
This was a gift for my dad, who's a voracious reader and fascinated by people and history. He loved this book!
exploring who we are and who we were.......2006-12-02
I was always fascinated by the great explorers; Columbus, Magellan, Da Gama. The stories that we learned about these men in school seemed like cliche's. What were they really like? What were they really looking for?
This scholarly yet accessible book tells their stories as well as the tales of many explorers we have not heard about. Dr. Fernandez-Armesto probes deeply yet prudently. In a mere 400 pages he covers the history of exploration in chronological fashion. We travel across the sea to Brasil with Cabral. We visit the polar regions with Amundsen and Scott. Captain Cook takes us everywhere. We go into the Amazon and the heart of Africa.
This book is a marvel. Your children will be enriched. Adults will be illuminated. Beautifully written, smoothly flowing, a wonder to read. This reviewer came away stunned and delighted.
Pathfinders, a book to read and reread.......2006-09-12
I have had the opportunity of reading Professor Fernandez-Armesto`s book that describes the history of global exploration. I must confess that it has enlightened my mind up to the point of finding answers to many of the questions I have quoted since my school years. His original and provoking theories justify why Europeans seek the discovery of new then unknown lands (when boats where able to sail upwind, when the Canary Islands entered the map and when the determination of rulers and financiers made it possible) whilst other peoples with similar or even great development of sailing technology and enjoying of similar trade winds did not succeed in conquering other territories as they lacked the sense of long term view. I have it on my bedside table to refresh my memory on who did what. It has already given me the opportunity of sharing what I have learnt through its lecture with my friends and I am sure each time I review it, will be able to gather new interesting information. I strongly recommend scholars and everyone interested in history to browse its pages and glean ideas from our history to learn about our future.

Book Description
There's a new market battle cry being sounded around the world: Faster-Better-Cheaper. Organizations everywhere are in a competitive war trying to pick up speed, improve output, and do it all for less money.
Actually, "improvement" per se isn't too hard to come by with all of today's technological advancements. The tricky part comes in doing things faster, better, and cheaper all at the same time. That takes creativity. Ingenuity. Innovation. To help your employees grow in this regard, they need role models. Good examples. It helps greatly to see living proof of "faster-better-cheaper" in action.
Price Pritchett's latest title, The Mars Pathfinder Approach to "Faster-Better-Cheaper" provides that proof, and breaks it down into 13 high-impact guidelines your employees can use to drive your organization to spectacular success.
Co-authored with Brian Muirhead, Flight Systems Manager of the JPL Mars Pathfinder Team, this book shows how a small group of dedicated people-tapping into the spirit of ingenuity and innovation-proved "faster-better-cheaper" works in deep space as well as it does on Earth.
Most important, the book draws the "faster-better-cheaper" business messages out of this intriguing story, and shows your employees how to apply them in your organization.

Where Brian Muirhead when you need him?.......1999-12-12
What an incredible book! Brian Muirhead's story of developing, launching, and landing the successful Mars Pathfinder Mission is an incredible story of vision, hard work, attention to detail, and because of it all, success.
The professionalism exhibited by Brian and his team continue to inspire me months after I read the book.
In the current days of failed missions to Mars, I can't help but think that if Brian Muirhead had been in charge of those failed missions, they too would have been a success.
At last a simple powerful book on how to perform in groups.......1999-03-12
You were so impressed by the Mars Pathfinder mission, and you are definetely interested by people management issues: get this great little book, you will appreciate the conciseness, precision, and high value of all the concepts it expresses.
If history is to teach us how to be 'better' in the present and the future, such short and enjoyable summaries of what was done well, how and why, is THE way to learn, grow and improve.
What a mission, what a book ! I missed two metro stops while savoring each of its words ! Bravo !: 5 stars !
PS: Get Brian K. Muirhead & William L. Simon's excellent book HIGH VELOCITY LEADERDSHIP if you want to read more about faster, better, cheaper".

Great ideas for finding new ways to do more with less!.......1998-08-23
Outstanding book showing how the Pathfinder team put a rover on Mars in less time and with a fraction of the money than it took to put up Voyager. Great ideas for how to look beyond the status quo and do things better, faster, cheaper. A great team leadership book.

Customer Reviews:
Colorful, friendly and fun.......2006-08-14
When 'The Pathfinder Psychic Talking Board' arrived I couldn't wait to take it out of the box and give it a try. The board is colorful, very friendly feeling and with all the information available on it - looks to be very fun. This could be a focal point of some interesting parties.
But to my dismay, I couldn't use it right out of the box. I have bought many games where the board is cut and folded so it will fit in the box. Unfortunately, when you take this out of the box, it is cut up one quarter of it and folded in fourths so when you open it up full, there is a deep crease going across the board one way and a nice slice going the other way for a half of the board. When I tried to glide the 'answer finder disc' across the face of the board, it would drag over the crease - actually change direction to follow the crease - and if I ran it over the sliced area, it would catch on the lip of the slice and stop unless I pushed a little harder. To use the board as it is intended, I think it will take a bit to smooth the seams. I am planning to mount it on a table and put a glass cover on it - that way the plastic disc will glide smoothly over the 'affected' areas of the board.
I feel it was worth what I paid and that the little bit of effort to make it operate smoothly will not affect that fun.
A GREAT BOOK. AND THAT'S OUR FINAL ANSWER!.......2003-01-07
We haven't had this much fun since we last played with our Ouija board! And finding answers to those questions plaguing you -- queries about live, love and liberty -- has never been easier: Simply touch your fingertips to the "Magical Message Indicator" in the center of the fold-out game board and ask your question. Quicker than you can say "tarot", a slight tingling sensation will pull the indicator around the board to rest on one or more of the illustrated symbols ... then look up the meaning of the symbols in the accompanying book. All we ask is that you never ask -- not even once -- "Is that your final answer?"
GREAT.......2000-07-27
I've used the Ouija board the Psychic Circle Tarot Cards all the other boards...You name it I've tried it. This is the best Product of it's kind ever made! It gives good answers and very practical solutions. It's just great! I asked this board a few questions and wrote down the answers, just for fun I then went to a Psychic and asked the same questions....I then compared....The were almost exactly the same even the wording was compariable! This is definently the best board...or as far as I'm concerned the best Psychic ever made! BUY ONE!
Farber and Zerner are the Martha Stewarts of the New Age!.......1999-10-04
This pair has produced many wonderful books and Tarot decks, and now this--it takes the cake! Punch your 1-Touch button and buy at least one immediately if not sooner!
Beautifully illustrated.......1999-09-09
I work in a bookstore, and I spotted this in the storeroom before it even hit the shelves. I own the Psychic Circle Message Board even though I've never used it, and I must say that the Pathfinder board is just as beautiful as the other. The drawings and symbols on the full color board are very neat and original...I do suggest this board or the Psychic Circle board to those of you out there who want a little bit more than the traditional "weejee" type board.

Customer Reviews:
This book is lacking.......2007-06-24
I had problems with my water hoses. Who ever heard of a Chiltons book that didn't have a chapter on cooling systems? I was expecting to see step by step for a water pump change. NOT.
Book is NOT worth the money.
General information in a poor quality print........2006-08-16
Having bought the Pontiac Firebird guide a few months earlier, I had high expectations on this book. I got it hoping it wouls help me with my Pathfinder. From the beggining I knew this book was meant for the US and Canada versions of the car. My car version is the Japanese.
I tried looking for info on the Limited Slip Differential system, and didn't find anything. I got some info on brakes, but the pictures are so poorly printed, so I rather serviced them all on my own.
Good information poorly printed.......2003-11-09
The information in the book is difficult to read because of the poor printing and cheap paper. Data tables are almost unreadable and the B&W pictures are fuzzy. The Haynes publication has all the same information pinted clearly with good pictures.
Useless book for me.......2003-05-20
I bought this book and promptly returned it after it did nothing to help me troubleshoot 2 different electrical problems. It provides partial wiring diagrams but does not give the specs on the various sending units so you can hook up a multitester and see whether or not they work.
I was having trouble removing the instrument panel and the diagram did not even match my pickup -- it was for a much older model. If you want to know how to check your oil or belt tension, this book is for you. If you want to do any complicated repairs, look elsewhere.
This book is aweful.......2002-03-30
This book is more or less useless. Several times while trying to accomplish repairs I've found this book to have serious ommissions. It's good as a basic reference if you can't find the owners manual but it lacks as a repair manual. I expected more from Chilton.

Cooper's epic of the western course of the American frontier follows the exploits of Natty from the French and Indian Wars to the early nineteenth century. The five novels are presented in their order of composition. Volume 1: The Pioneers, The Last of the Mohicans, The Prairie. Volume 2: The Pathfinder, The Deerslayer.
Customer Reviews:
A Tribute to Virtue.......2006-09-19
The Pathfinder and The Deerslayer are great stories well told. Natty Bumppo (a.k.a. Pathfinder, Deerslayer and Hawkeye) is the archtypical American hero. He is brave, honest and selfless, yet still humble. He is a model for us all. Young people in particular should read about him as an antidote to the rampant braggadocio that too many modern "heros" exhibit.
Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offenses.......2006-03-22
There is one, and only one reason to read Fenimore Cooper's books.
That reason is so you can fully appreciate Mark Twain's critique of Cooper's writing.
See:
"Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offenses"
[...]
For this reason only I recommend to read this book or others by Cooper. It will have made all that pain greatly worthwhile.
CAPTIVATING STORIES INTIMATLY TANGLED WITH ART.......2001-07-23
Cooper is too good to be true! I love reading his books because he creates such beautiful pictures while he binds you to an imaginative story line. His stories bring you to the battlefront and into the very mind of the hero.
This book has a beautiful format. It is very useful. I do recommend hardback editions thus allowing you to pass on your treasures to further generations. James Fenimore Cooper demands immense reverance from attentive readers. No library should be without this book.
