A must have for All My Children viewers.......2003-12-28
This is an excellent book for anyone who loves All My Children. I bought mine used and it was in excellent condition. As a long time All My Children viewer (from the beginning) this was a trip down memory lane for me. It covered all the years from 1970 to 1995. The color pictures were beautiful and the trivia section in the back was wonderful. This is a must have book for all serious and long time viewers of All My Children.
A must for AMC fans!.......2001-03-18
Have you ever had a question about AMC? What actor played what role or who married who? You will find answers to your questions in this big AMC book. What I loved about this book is that it has a thorough plot summary of every year since it's debut in 1970. The book includes family photos, wedding photos, behind the scenes info, AMC trivia, actor quotes, interesting facts, a complete cast list and much more. This is a wonderful coffee table book!

Family Ties That Binds.......2007-07-20
Very insightful book on family of origin, formation on one's personality, and finding ways to heal from your past...
A great way to get started on understanding family.......2002-03-06
I have been recommending this book to friends and colleagues who are struggling with family issues. It is easy to read, and yet raises very relevant and practical questions. This is the perfect bridge between the most powerful academic ideas, and practical steps for anyone to take to understand themselves, and create better relationships with their family.
There are many cases presented in the book that can help you see that what you're experiencing is common, and can be worked through. The underlying structure of the book is very solid--based on Friedman's emotional systems stuff. There is a part at the end on how to research and learn from your family history, going back several generations.
Finally, there is a fun chapter on family position. I think it is meant to be general, and taken with a grain of salt. Having said that, I've found the research on the link between family position and couple compatibility to be very interesting.
If you like this book and want more depth, read "Generation to Generation" by Edwin Friedman.
Differentiation - a key to being and giving.......2001-04-01
I read this book on the advice of a wonderful counselor. What I found most remarkable was that the Family Systems approach confirms the crucial importance of fathers in our lives, both as men and women. It seems that in our desire to correct the injustices commited against women by selfish and angry men, we have gone too far and ignored the fact that a father's love is vitally important for both men and women to find wholeness. This book doesn't give all the answers, but it is a step towards finding healing for our brokenness and the freedom to freely give of ourselves to loved ones, friends, and all those in need around us. A good follow up read to this book is Leanne Payne's "Crisis in Masculinity".
Brief and superficial.......2000-09-10
Disappointing in its brevity, this book is little more than a pamphlet. Despite purporting to address issues of birth order, this book provides only a few pages on the entire topic, and covers the entire realm of possible "middle" children in less than two pages, without even bothering to address the issue of gender, which are at least mentioned for other birth positions. Furthermore, it claims middle children are likely to be "confused about their identity", "less likely to take the initiative or think independently", "the lowest achievers academically and the least likely in a family to go to college", "often feel that life is unfair", "become self destructive by becoming a gang member or a petty criminal (but rarely a big-time crook). Often they will just develop annoying habits".
But don't worry, "middle" children out there, according to Dr Richardson, there is a wonderful career waiting for you as a secretary or a waiter!!! I'm not sure how this is supposed to be helpful to someone hoping to understand the impact of their family of origin.

One of the books that should be on "books to read before I die" list. An absolute classic in every sense of the word!! Reminds you what a child's fantasy is and you'll sit in the chair for hours after you finish reading in your own world... thinking... remembering... wishing...
English Class Review.......2006-10-18
The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis are great children's books. They are easy to read and interesting. In The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, it starts out with Lucy, Edmund, Susan, and Peter having to go live with their uncle because of the war and air raids from Germany. One day while playing hide and seek in the house, Lucy hides in a wardrobe and finds herself in another world; Narnia. She meets a fawn and becomes friends with him. He warns Lucy of the White Witch warning her of her power. When Lucy returns to her world, her siblings don't believe her but later on all hide in the wardrobe and walk into Narnia. Edmund betrays his siblings and sides with the White Witch, who makes it always winter, but never Christmas. They run around, following Mr. and Mrs. Beaver, trying to hide from the White Witch while trying to meet Aslan, the lion at the Stone Table. Aslan talks to Edmund and settles for him to never betray them again. The queen does not want the children to be in Narnia because of the prophecy that says that four people will take over Narnia and overthrow the queen. There is a battle over Narnia between the children and the Witch. The children win and become the rulers of Narnia.
Unlike most books it is interesting from the beginning, and keeps you interested. I usually don't like fantasy fiction books, but this is a good one. There are adventures involved, which can get children into a book. I didn't get the characters mixed up as I usually do in a book. The story is descriptive enough to get a picture in your head but doesn't go on for three pages about the scenery.
I read this book when I was in about 6th grade, and honestly I enjoyed it more now as a teenager because I understood more of it. I would not usually pick up a book for fun and read it, but I would recommend this book to readers because it is simple and to the point, and interesting. I have the sequels and may read those to find out what happens next in Narnia.
if you haven't "read it" youll "regret it".......2006-10-18
this book is awesome.i just finished reading it and i'm very proud of myself.i hpe you read this book. the only thing is that it isn't as good as the movie.i saw it the other day when it was on "stars".well i got to go to my next class. smell ya later aligator!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Strife, sacrifice, deep magic..........2006-04-06
Four siblings-Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy-are staying with their eccentric uncle for the summer when a mysterious wardrobe transports them to another world: Narnia.
The siblings find themselves in the middle of a prophecy and a battle between the evil White Witch and the benevolent talking lion Aslan. Mr. and Mrs. Beaver try to keep the siblings out of trouble and lead them to Aslan.
But the siblings are betrayed by one of their own and tracked relentlessly by the White Witch. When the White Witch finally catches up to the siblings, Lucy and Susan must stand by while Aslan commits himself to the ultimate sacrifice to save the life of one of their brothers. But Narnia possesses "deep magic from the dawn of time." This magic will turn the tide in the next battle for Narnia.
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is a pleasing extension of the The Magician's Nephew. Aslan reappears and his courage and sacrifice really carried me through the book while Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy play their parts well-youngsters being youngsters. The Beavers were an adorable touch too, acting exactly like a silly, old married couple. In all, another great story for building imagination and character.

The Lion, The Witcha and The Wardrobe
By:C.S. Lewis
Reviewed by:R.Ajoc

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is the best book that Clive Staples Lewis has created. The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is about Peter, Susan, Lucy, and Edmund in their guardians home because of war in thier homeland. One day as their playing hide and seek, Lucy hides in a giant wardrobe and stumbles into a mysterious land that her friend, Mr. Tumnus calls Narnia. Lucy is very astonished that she has found this new fantasy world inside of her guardian, Professor Kirke. Lucy tries to tell everyone yet no one believes anything that lucy says. Then Edmund, the bratty one in the family happens to also find Narnia, Edmund being the brat that he is tells everyone, and no one believes him. Then all of them go into the wardrobe for the first time and nothing happenes, then tries later thier in the snowy world of Narnia, and they all see Mr. Tumnus, as sneaky Edmund runs off with the white witch. Now the others Lucy, Susan, and Peter must find the White Witch and defeat her with the mighty lion, Aslan.
The whole plot of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is to start of the real beggining of The Chronicles of Narnia. The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is my favorite book. C.S. Lewis starts off the great fantasy world, Narnia with a great hit. Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe has already been created into a movie. The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe is my favorite book because it features many scenes while you read where you can just sink into and get lost in, especially the part during the war.
This book is a very good book, although I am not a very big fan of fantasy books but Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is the best fantasy book I have ever read and probably the one and only best book in the series. This book is special because of the way you feel as you read it, it is as if your actually in the fantasy world of Narnia as your reading, like your running right behind Aslan as you run, or like your on flying on a dragon, such as on Dragon Rider. The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe is one of the best fantasy books to have hit book shelves.
My favorite part of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is during the end when there is a big battle for who will win the land of Narnia The White Witch or Aslan, Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy. This part took alot of imagination, and it really helps you picture the war in your head. As Aslan revivies from the brutal killing ceremony from The White Witch Peter, Susan, Lucy, and Edmund are surprised to see that Aslan is still alive. This part of the story showed that you can never die, your body may die but your soul lives on. Aslan's role in this part of the story is very strong, you can feel that C.S. Lewis is trying to send you messages in a fantasy book, while your using your imagination and thinking of how the story is going on in your head.

Customer Reviews:
Really helpful book, and very funny too.......2007-09-29
This book has been an enormous help to my 5 year old who has her first wobbly tooth, she was so worried about losing her tooth but this book has helped her see the process and that it can be quite fun. Lola makes everything fun and funny though.
In this book Lola has a wobbly tooth and doesn't want it to come out. That is until her friend Lotta, her brother Charlie and Charlie's friend Marv tell her what happens, and that the tooth fairy comes to visit - and that the tooth fairy brings money, and she can buy a giraffe for her farm.
It is not surprising to know that Lola wobbles the tooth after that until it comes out. However she loses the tooth and starts to cry wondering whether the tooth fairy will visit. Charlie has a brilliant idea and the day is saved.
Immensely appealing book for children and adults - great early reader material - there are cues in the book for readers to pick up the text with. The characters are immensely appealing to look at too - the artwork is brilliant - the collage effect is inspiring and there are great little touches - lots of little things to see on every page.
This is one of the best series of children's books around (in my opinion!) and you and your children will enjoy them - we certainly do.
Fun, but not by Lauren Child.......2007-08-21
Charlie and Lola are fast becoming my son's and my favorite characters, but some of these books, Wobbly Tooth included, are not actually written by Lauren Child. The text is based on a script from the t.v. program, and it shows. The story is fun if you have seen the episode, but not a good read. If you want real Lauren Child books, buy Eat a Tomato or Princess and the Pea or her Herb books. That being said, this is honestly and completely a cute book for children who love Charlie and Lola.
We love Charlie and Lola.......2007-08-06
My kids and I love the TV show and the books are a really nice compliment to what they are already familiar with. I try to read in a accent (which sounds so much cooler) but I need some practice! Also this books sets the stage for my DD's first tooth to fall out!
oh, so much silly fun!.......2007-07-02
My daughter loves this book, and to read it over and over. Lola is so silly, yet dealing with issues that are real to a pre-schooler/kindergartner. My girlie can even do the British accent while reading it. What a laugh!
My toddler enjoys this book.......2007-03-09
Characters and plot are well thought out and depicted -- believable and positive images of young children/siblings. Drawings are simple and effective. This is one in a series of books that toddlers and grownups enjoy sharing with each other.
Book Description
Everybody Loves Raymond is the most consistently funny program on television today -- and also one of the most widely watched and hihgly praised shows of all time. Now, Ray Romano and show creator Phil Rosenthal have made an official companion to the series. This insider's look at Raymond's world features a lively introduction by Ray and Phil, where they tell the stories of how they met, how Raymond came to be, and how the first episode was made. The next eight chapters follow the show season by season, with candid photography by Tom Caltabiano, one of the show's writers, who has informally documented the cast and crew from day one. Accompanying the photos is hilarious running commentary from Ray and Phil, as they describe memorable moments, fun facts, and tales from behind the scenes. Along the way, interviews with the cast reveal humorous and insightful anecdotes from Patricia Heaton, Doris Roberts, Peter Boyle, Brad Garrett, and Monica Horan. And the conversation with the show's award-winning writers show how their personal family dramas provide inspiration for the on-screen stories.

terrific book, but does not cover the entire series.......2006-04-25
"Everybody Loves Raymond: Our Family Album" is an ideal companion for the classic sitcom that ran for 9 successful years and continues to be loved through daily reruns.
Written by Ray Romano and series creator Phil Rosenthal, this book contains extensive information about the show, the cast and crew, and the individual episodes. It really is the perfect thing for fans who can't get enough of the show and want something a little more. This book includes an interview from everyone in the main cast (as well as some crew members), they talk a little bit about the Sweeten kids (who, of course, played Ray and Debra's three children on the show), and hundreds of color photos fill every page (both stills from the actual episodes and candid behind-the-scenes pictures). There are highlighted sections for some of the most popular episodes from each season, which are accompanied by photos and lighthearted comments from Romano and Rosenthal. There are even pictures and information about some of the cast and crew's real-life family members, which die-hard fans will love to see. Then, at the end, there is a complete episode guide for the first 7 1/2 seasons, which lists a brief synopsis and a "memorable moment" from each episode.
The only problem with this book is that, as I mentioned above, it only covers Seasons 1-7 and half of Season 8. I personally don't understand why they didn't at least wait until the entire Season 8 wrapped up before publishing this. Hopefully, though, they will come out with a revised edition that goes all the way through Season 9. Despite that, however, this is still a very valuable book to buy if you are an avid fan of "Raymond." It offers a lot of insight from everyone involved with the show, and it is more than just a short book with some pictures. It's very precise and informative, and you really get a feeling of what a special group of people worked together for those 9 years. It is sad that they could not continue the series for at least one more season, but they certainly went out on top and have deserved every bit of the credit they have received. "The sitcom of our times," it is indeed!
A Great Show and a Great Book.......2004-09-15
Everybody Loves Raymond has to be the one of the funniest comedies on TV today. It has been playing since 1996 and is still fresh and funny in it's brand new episodes.
The cast includes:
-Ray Romano as Ray Barone, the overall star of the show. He has a house, a job as a sports writer for Newsday, a wife Debra (Patricia Heaton), and three children- two twin boys (Jeffrey and Michael) and a girl (Ally). Ray's ignorance is quite funny!
-Patricia Heaton as Ray's wife, Debra Barone. she is much more intelligent than him and is always tolerating Ray's family. She's the only "normal one" of the bunch!
-Brad Garrett as Ray's older brother, Robert Barone. Robert is always insanely jealous of his younger brother and how "lucky" he is for living Robert's dream of having a house and a family. Robert, for a time, lives with his and Ray's parents, but eventually moves out and gets his own apartment. Robert is always visiting Ray's home and is also always craving attention from his mother, Marie, since Raymond is undoubtedly her favorite child.
-Doris Roberts as Marie, Ray's mother. Marie lives across the street with Ray's father (Frank) and is an unbelievable cook. She is not particularly fond of Debra, and always finds some flaw with anything Debra is doing or cooking. She loves to make fun of Debra's housework and cooking. She is constantly made fun of by her husband, Frank, who obviously cannot stand her even though they have been married for 45 years. She undoubtedly favors Raymond over Robert, and even openly admits it a few times, such as in one of my favorite quotes: "I knew something was wrong with that meatloaf, I should have thrown it out or given it to Robbie." However, despite her unfriendly sides, she loves her family truly and always attempts to act out of love (though it doesn't always appear that way).
-And finally, Peter Boyle as Ray's father, Frank. Frank is a truly disgusting man who doesn't show love well and totally lacks taste or class in public. According to Ray, he once "peed in the yard" and "threw his shoe at a flamingo to protect his sandwich". Frank's comments to Marie are hilarious (as are Marie's comments to Debra). In one Thanksgiving episode, Frank admits that he truly loves Marie, which is obviously why their relationship has lasted 45 years. Frank thoroughly enjoys all types of food and cooking and also watching TV with his pants unbuckled.

Customer Reviews:
bright and funny - but excellent for kids .......2007-09-29
My kids love these books, which is a great selling point, I love these books which is great if you have to read them all the time, but even better, they have a great message which is told in a fun way. If you have sibling children who are fighting over the same stuff, or interfering with one another's toys and games, this is a wonderful book with a message.
Lola, who is ever such a little bit, not quite naughty is the little sister of Charlie. Charlie helps look after her, but sometimes it is not that easy becasue she is very small and very funny. Charlie makes a rocket using recycled junk, and wins a prize at school. He asks Lola not to play with it. However Lola waits until charlie is gone out and starts playing with her imaginery friend, Soren Lorensen. Soren suggests that they use the rocket to play with the elephant and two hyenas (who has hyenas in their games!!!!!!) The rocket breaks and when Charlie gets back Lola is left to explain what has happened to the rocket. It is very funny watching Lola talk to Soren Lorensen and finding new excuses, you can really hear the child's voice. In the end Lola is forced to fess up and everything is fixed up and ok.
I love Charlie and Lola Books, and also Lauren's other books on Clarice Bean (gorgeous!)The illustrations are amazing, a mixture of appealing child like art and collage. There are some great interlinking pictures with the text for early readers too.
A wonderful series and great on DVD too.
The cutest kids ever!.......2007-08-25
My granddaughters in Australia are keen fans of the Charlie and Lola books. In their case life imitates art since they have a big brother who's just as nurturing as Charlie is!
In fact I first heard this book read to the girls by their teen-aged brother, and the experience brought a smile to my face.
Lola's impulse control is not great, and in WHOOPS! BUT IT WASN'T ME she again tries Charlie's patience -- this time by breaking his handmade, prize-winning rocket. But the details of the story aren't so important as the gentle example for little ones. Kids see that Lola is loved no matter how outrageous she is, and Charlie models patience, negotiation and resourcefulness. Nice lessons slipped in with a fun story.
Lauren Child's sweet stories and delightful illustrations charm children and adults alike. This is my favorite (so far) of the Charlie and Lola books.
children just love Charlei and Lola.......2007-05-13
I purchased the book "Whoop! But It Wasn't Me(Charlie & Lola)" for my neice who is 21/2 years old & who absolutley love Charlie and Lola. On receipt of this book she would not put it down and even took a nap with the book. The only down side if you want to call it that is she wants me to read it every day 2-3 times a day.
Every child can relate.......2007-03-09
Charlie and his little sister Lola share another totally believable story with us, excellent illustrations, nice blend of images. Dialog accurately reflects young children's speech and draws them into listening as they enjoy the pictures.
Whoops! But it wasn't Me (Charlie and Lola).......2007-02-08
I love all of the Charlie and Lola books! My son was not interested in any characters (in television or books) until he saw these. Now every night he has to have Charlie and Lola books read to him. All he wants to watch are his Charlie and Lola DVDs. Not only do these books have creative artistry, they teach morals and responsibility. I recommend this series to everyone.

Book Description
The Simpsons is one of the longest running, funniest, most irreverent, and, according to some religious leaders, the most theologically relevant show on television today. Journalist Mark Pinsky explores the religious and spiritual aspects of Bart, Homer, and the rest of cartoon's first family--a show strongly denounced by many conservative Christians back in 1989, but now viewed favorably by fans from all across the theological spectrum.
Pinsky looks at the use of God, Jesus, heaven and hell, the Bible, prayer in the Simpson household, the evangelistic next-door neighbor Ned Flanders, and the town's church and pastor, Rev. Lovejoy. He also discusses whether the character of Lisa is the voice of Jesus, and explores the many moral dilemmas that the characters, in particular Bart and Homer, face. Pinsky concludes with a discussion that suggests that, on the whole, The Simpsons is supportive and not subversive of faith. This is must reading for any Simpsons' fan, and an insightful exploration of how religion and faith influences popular culture.
Customer Reviews:
Mistitled but good read.......2007-09-07
Who would expect such a clever critique of American religiosity from a cartoon sitcom? This is a very entertaining read that unveils how the Simpsons cartoon has more religious themes in it than we might have noticed. My one main critique of the book, is that it is mistitled. I can understand why it was named The Gospel According to the Simpsons because there are a series of these books (advertised in the back of the book) on the Gospel According to Peanuts, Harry Potter, Disney, etc. However, the author himself recognizes that the word "Gospel" is actually misapplied to the Simpsons, because for as much religious/spiritual content as there is in the show, it is not specifically Christian. That is, in terms of presenting the Christian Gospel (good news) of salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Jesus Christ alone. So the author even recognizes that this message is not conveyed in the Simpsons, but rather the belief system presented in the cartoon is more based on good works/good life getting you into heaven. I think the book would be more accurately titled "Faith and Morals in the Simpsons" or something like that, which probably wouldn't be as catchy.
What surprised me (and is to the credit of the author) is that though the author is a self-proclaimed Jew and member of a liberal synagogue (p. 192), he has a pretty accurate understanding of the Christian gospel. As a religion writer, he picks up very well on the ways that the Simpsons poke fun and satirize what is happening in many Christian churches in America today. Though the Simpson family is ostensibly Christian in the cartoon, each member of the family has their own twist on religion, that once again does not directly reflect the Christian faith so much as a generically moral-religious worldview. Specific chapters deal with Homer, Lisa, and Ned Flanders' "faith" as well as one on the preacher at their church, Reverend Lovejoy. The faith of other characters is discussed intermittently throughout.
The clever part of it is how well each of the different characters portrays (albeit in a parodied or somewhat exaggerated manner) many real-world views that people have about religion. And while the religious humor may startle some, most of the time the characters are just being more honest in expressing their thoughts then we are willing to be in real life. But for all the laughs, the series does not take an overly negative or mocking view of Christianity specifically, or religion in general. Part of the reason the writers try to avoid specific mention of the Christian Gospel, or use Jesus Christ as an object of joking, is to keep from offending people. Actually one of the best parts of the series is how it uses satire to critique, not the heart of the Christian message itself, but rather the oddities of American Christianity and the curious or misguided beliefs that many of its adherents hold to.
The book is a light and entertaining read, and while we don't look to a cartoon for moral guidance or how to live, the show takes a surprisingly moral outlook on life. And using humor, it engages in situations of temptation that parallel real life, and with some of the "major" temptations, the characters come out surprisingly well. Such as episodes where either Homer or Marge is tempted to cheat on one another, and all the opportunities are ripe, but they ultimately remain faithful to each other for the sake of love and family. But above all, the show teaches us to laugh at ourselves a little, which never hurts. :)
Interesting Read, No Matter What Your Faith..........2007-08-26
Once again, the Simpsons are poised to devour another hurried dinner, most of them blissfully unaware of their imperfect fallibility; however, Homer is disgusted with their behavior at the annual company picnic earlier that day. Marge hit the rum-spiced punch once too often, the kids ran amok, and he's convinced they're the "worst family in town". At his wits end, Homer seeks supplication from God:
"Dear Lord, thank you for this microwave bounty, even though we don't deserve it. I mean...our kids are uncontrollable hellions! Pardon my French, but they act like savages! Did you see them at the picnic today? Of course you did; you're everywhere, you're omnivorous, O Lord!"
And thus is the tenuous connection between the Simpsons and the divine.
"The Gospel According To the Simpsons", by Mark I. Pinsky, is an anecdotal collection of bits and pieces from the series, and an insightful - if sometimes lengthy - exposition of their deeper meanings. Pinsky's work deconstructs everything from Homer's convenient views, the blasé Reverend Lovejoy, to do-gooder neighbor Ned Flanders's squeaky-clean aura, leaving no stone - or Aunt Selma - unturned.
Though Pinsky muses about the spiritual reflections found in the Simpsons's travails, there's nothing here of real theological assertion. The most you'll find is something Simpsons fans have argued for years: the show is much more than a sarcastic cartoon - it's high satire at its best, using humor to pose moral and spiritual questions we struggle with daily. Regardless, it's a good "pre-read" to the upcoming Simpsons movie, whatever faith it's approached from.
An interesting premise and lots of fun (a conservative Christian Simpson fan's review).......2007-08-04
Some of the one star reviews that this book has generated tell me that some people have entirely missed the point of the book. The point of the book is NOT to tell how the Simpsons preach the Gospel. They don't.
However, not only is "The Simpsons" the best show on television, it is also a remarkably spiritual show. It is the only show in which the main characters go to church on a regular basis. No one thinks it strange that people pray. Prayers are answered. God exists and he acts. From time to time, organized religion is skewered with their wickedly clever satire. Then again, so is everything else, from rock stars to public education to family life to just about everything else. Pinsky's point is that religion is treated remarkably well on the show that has a bad reputation.
Pinsky focuses on each of the main characters (Homer, Marge, Bart & Lisa) and also on Ned (evangelical Christian), Apu (Hindu)and Krusty (Jewish) in order to show how religion and morality are treated in the show.
He also details several plotlines - two or three of them are explicitly based on a religious theme -and shows how they relate to his overall thesis. He backs it up with several interviews and quotes from the creators and writers of the show.
I saw this book's author interviewed on PBS's "Religion and Ethics Newsweekly" in conjunction with the premiere of "The Simpsons Movie". I'm glad I saw it and I'm glad I picked this book up.
Note, the show has managed to put about 150 more shows out since this book was written in 2001, but this fan thinks that the premise of this book is still correct.
I give this book a grade of "A"
The Simpsons and God in the same place...Who-diddly-knew?.......2006-12-12
Upon first watching The Simpsons, I don't think the average viewer's initial inclination would be to call the show spiritual or religious. Viewers may say the animated TV staple is smart, satirical, and funny, or maybe innocently irreverent; those who aren't fans may call it unwholesome or immature -- but religious? Probably not. However, as author Mark Pinsky posits in the opening pages of THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO THE SIMPSONS, America's favorite cartoon is, in fact, very spiritual. It explores religious issues in more depth, Pinsky believes, than any other television show in the medium.
And I think he's right. Just go back and watch your favorite episode of The Simpsons, and you'll probably notice some reference to God, Jesus, or religion in general sometime within the 22 minutes it takes you to watch the show. Or you could just pick up THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO THE SIMPSONS to find a pretty comprehensive discussion of the role religion plays in Springfield. THE GOSPEL explores the nature of spirituality in The Simpsons, both by analyzing a few of the more religious characters (Ned Flanders, Marge and Lisa Simpson, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, Krusty the Clown, Reverend Lovejoy) and by studying specific episodes of The Simpsons to determine the role God, Jesus, Satan, Heaven and hell, and the Bible play on the show. According to Pinsky, The Simpsons supports an interpretation of faith in which eternal salvation comes from works rather than grace (a point of view which is backed up by various episodes, namely "Homer vs. Lisa and the Eight Commandment"). While THE GOSPEL offers few groundbreaking insights, it is interesting, and suprisingly legitimate. It definitely made me more aware of some of the more religious aspects of The Simpsons, and since reading it, I find myself watching syndicated re-runs with a new perspective, pointing out religious aspects to my husband while he rolls his eyes at me.
While I did find this book to be interesting reading, I would caution future readers that there's a LOT of episode summary -- so much so, in fact, that it sometimes deters from rather than supports Pinsky's points. Many seasoned Simpsons fans may find themselves impatient with the lengthy rehashing of episodes; therefore, with that in mind, I'd recommend THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO THE SIMPSONS especially for those who aren't very familiar with the show and, because of the show's questionable reputation in its early years, are hesitant to allow their children to watch it. To those people: You may be surprised at how wholesome The Simpsons really is, how supportive it is of family values and religious tolerance.
My only other small quibble with the book was the final chapter, which profiles some of the show's most notable producers and writers. I found the chapter unnecessary and thought it was a poor way to end the book; instead of being left with the religious aspects of The Simpsons, readers are left with the perspectives of those behind the scenes. It weakend the book for me a little bit.
THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO THE SIMPSONS brought up some valid points and offered a new perspective on America's beloved yellow family. It was an entertaining, well-organized book with a clear point of view. One thing's for sure: The Simpsons will be a staple in our home on Sunday evenings for as long as it airs, as sure as Marge Simpson serves pork chops every Friday night. You all should watch it, too, if you don't already.
Interesting little book.......2006-05-20
This is far from a groundbreaking work on religion, to put it mildly, but it does provide an interesting, and, for the most part, a surprisingly valid way of looking at the pop culture phenomenon that is "The Simpsons." And this book has the notable quality, compared with most takes on theology, of being a fairly funny book (not so much because Pinsky is a wildly amusing writer, but because he quotes from some quite hilarious "Simpons" episodes). One unavoidable shortcoming is that this book might feel a little outdated because there have already been a number of "Simpsons" episodes touching on religion that have aired since this book was published (a fact that does support the author's contention that religion is quite central to the show).
Book Description
In this 8-CD audio edition (playing time: about 11 hours), the voices of Dr. Walter Edgar and Anita Rosenberg bring to life the members of the William Bull Pringle family of Charleston, South Carolina during the Civil War era.
Born to affluence and opportunity in the South's Golden Age, Mary Motte Alston Pringle (1803-1884) represented the epitome of Southern white womanhood. Her husband was a wealthy rice planter who owned four plantations and 337 slaves. Her thirteen children included two Harvard scholars, seven world travelers, a U.S. Navy war hero, six Confederate soldiers, one possible Union collaborator, a Confederate firebrand trapped in the North, an expatriate bon vivant in France, and two California pioneers. Mary's World illuminates in lavish detail the world and psyche of this wealthy, well-educated, well-intentioned woman and her family from the antebellum South.
During the Civil War, Mary and her husband, William, stood helpless as two sons were killed, another was driven insane, their slaves were freed, and the world as they knew it was swept away by a hurricane of social change. In her own words, Mary tells us about the joys, sorrows, frustrations, and terrors she and her family faced in nineteenth-century Charleston. This intimate, visceral biography was drawn directly from over 2,500 pages of Mary's handwritten letters, journals and diaries, none of which, she could have imagined, would ever be read by strangers. Therein lies their power.
Readers also learn about the vastly different lifestyles, food, clothing, and experiences of their slaves. Mary's World also pays special attention to Cretia Stewart, Mary's favorite servant, Cretia's husband, Scipio, and their free descendants, some of whom worked for Mary's grandchildren well into the twentieth century. How Mary, William, their children, and slaves lived before the Civil War, clung desperately to life in the eye of the maelstrom, and coped - or failed to cope -- with its bewildering aftermath is the story of this book. The letters and images they left behind offer priceless insights into the anguished roots of Southern social history.
Customer Reviews:
touching, fascinating, personal view of the Antebellum South.......2006-08-04
Mary's World helped me to understand life in the Antebellum South and the culture that thrived on slavery. But it also showed the North's response to winning the Civil War, which was anything but forgiving. It was a thrill to see the Miles Brewton House and the St. Michael's Cemetary on my recent visit to Charleston, and to feel the connection with the Mottes, Alstons, and Pringles.
A family of slaveowners........2005-04-23
The book is well written and entertaining. The story was nicely presented around the letters of Mary Pringle. All the similar names of the characters make it a little confusing. A nice reference chart showing the relationship of the characters should be included at the beginning of the book. Did the author hide some things to make the family look better? I wonder. It's hard for a Northerner to muster up a lot of sympathy for this family of slave owners. Perhaps Julius, who likely became a Unionist, was the real hero of the family. It's ironic that the South nearly destroyed our country in the 1860's, but is saving it today.
Mary's World: A Review.......2005-01-14
In Mary's World Richard N. Cote has succeeded admirably where so many others have tried and yet missed the mark. With his succinct style and exceptional organizational skills he has laid bare the thoughts, emotions and lives of Mary Pringle, her family and their slaves, and done so in a way that has given us a book
that is informative as well as enjoyable. By putting their lives
into context with the times Mr Cote has given the reader not only the opportunity to learn what they thought and felt but the ability to understand why they thought and felt the way they
did. This book will appeal to historians and the average reader
alike.
It took me only 2 days to read Mary's World and I found myself
so absorbed that when interrupted I was momentarily confused to find I wasn't in 19th century Charleston.
A MUST READ.......2004-12-14
FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN ANTEBELLUM CULTURE AND THE CIVIL WAR, THIS IS A MUST READ. EVEN FOR THOSE WHO AREN'T A STUDENT OF THE ERA, "MARY'S WORLD" IS STILL A FASCINATING GLIMPSE OF THE LIFE OF AN ELITE SOUTHERN PLANTER FAMILY. TAKEN FROM FAMILY PAPERS, THE STORY OF THE PRINGLES IS A FIRST HAND ACCOUNT OF THEIR INNERMOST THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS.
THE READER GETS TO WATCH WILLIAM BULL AND MARY ALSTON PRINGLE'S CHILDREN GROW UP. BY THE END OF THE BOOK YOU FEEL AS IF YOU HAVE KNOWN THEM ALL. I DREADED FINISHING THE BOOK BECAUSE I FELT AS IF I WAS LEAVING OLD FRIENDS.
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND MAKE TIME FOR THIS BOOK. REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU ARE AN "ANTEBELLUM-OPHILE" LIKE ME OR NOT, THIS IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK.
Great Book!.......2004-12-07
I found this book in Charleston on vacation after touring this home. I loved this book! Now I want to visit again because I am so much more invested. I read this book for pure pleasure, and di it deliver! One doesn't need to visit the south to enjoy, the book takes you there. It gives such insight to the era and history the reader gets pulled right in.
