Flow handbook was exactly what I needed and it came quick........2005-09-28
I needed this book and I needed it in a hurry. It shipped within 24 hours and I received it in less than 24 hours after it shipped.
excelente.......2000-01-12
The Only You Will Ever Need on Flow Meters.......1998-06-13
Highly detailed in every way. Complete equations suitable for computer programming. In fact, Rosemount and other companies refer to this handbook exclusively. The index is the best way to use this book. As handbooks go, it is easy to use and an excellent compilation of vendor information as well as original R&D information. There are a few quarks in the equations for integral orifices, but the actual errors are negligable. I got improved equations from Rosemount. The only reason why I did not give 5 stars is that it takes some time to dig information from the handbook. It's all there, but, it takes time to digest it. You must have this book if you encounter instruments, particularly, flow metes, during your work. You must have this book!

Spawned by a 10-year study of 2,000 firms conducted at Bain & Company, a global consultancy specializing in business strategy, Profit from the Core is based on the fundamental but oft-ignored maxim that prolonged corporate growth is most profitably achieved by concentrating on a single core business. To help companies identify this true essence, narrow their focus accordingly, and move forward in a manner that builds upon existing structure, Bain director Chris Zook and former Bain director James Allen present "a set of practical and proven principles, diagnostic tests, and questions for management teams to use as tools for reexamining or revising their strategies in search of the next wave of profitable growth." Bolstering their argument with real-world examples--including companies such as Disney, which succeeded by taking this approach, and Bausch & Lomb, which faltered by eschewing it--the authors show how to effectively uncover true corporate strengths, elevate them to realize their potential, identify related new businesses that could be successfully added, and even completely redefine a core when confronted with factors forcing such action. (For example: they offer a step-by-step method for mapping "adjacent opportunities" that may prove complementary, ranking them according to potential, and developing strategies to further evaluate and ultimately implement them.) The result is recommended for anyone tired of the management theory du jour who seeks a proven way to propel their company into the future. --Howard Rothman

Download Description
Profit from the Core argues that a timeless strategic principle--building market power in a well-defined core business--remains the key source of competitive advantage and the most viable platform for successful expansion. Based on a ten-year study of 2,000 companies conducted by Bain & Company, the book identifies three factors that differentiate growth strategies that succeed from those that fail: 1) reaching full potential in the core business; 2) expanding into businesses adjacent to that core; and 3) preemptively redefining the core business in times of market turbulence. Explaining how leaders can adapt their strategies in response to a rapidly changing business environment, the book concludes with guidelines for becoming sustained value creators--companies capable of successfully refining and redefining their core businesses over the long haul.
Customer Reviews:
Define your core business clearly.......2006-02-21
The authors of this book see 3 essential elements separating a good growth strategy, one that is successful from a poor growth strategy, one that fails:
· The company must reach its full potential in its core business or businesses.
· Once a company has reached its potential in its core business, it must then expand to the logical businesses that surround the core business.
· A company must preemptively redefine its core business in response to the first signs of changes in the marketplace.
The foundation of sustained growth, according to these authors, rests in establishing a strong foundation: a clear definition of the company's core business. The authors present a series of ten questions designed to aid businesses in defining their core business clearly.
There are pitfalls along the way, and the authors present several growth pitfalls to avoid:
· Expanding toward an entrenched position, where the company has relatively low odds of achieving leadership
· Overestimating the profit pool.
· "False Bundling"- trying to be all things to all customers.
· Invaders from unexpected fronts.
In order to deal with market changes, the authors offer five key changes that are most threatening to a company's growth:
· Erosion of low-end product segments.
· Erosion of customer segments.
· Erosion of micro-segments.
· Erosion of traditional business boundaries.
· New intermediaries and new control points.
Skip this one and read the sequel instead.......2005-03-28
This is not a terrible book- it has some interesting case studies which the authors use to prove their points. However, there is not a great deal in here that is new if you've read the sequel to this book first ("Beyond the Core", Zook), and have read other
There are some good points about this book. I like the parts about defining the business boundaries, mapping adjacencies, reacting to competitor threats, etc. However, I feel that I got a lot more out of the sequel than from this book. Perhaps I would have rated it higher if I read it first, or if I hadn't already read so many books on this theme. Surely Zook and Allen should not pay the price for this, so I have factored this in to my score.
Additionally, I suppose I can't blame them for writing highly of Enron and even using them as an example of successful "redefinition of the core"- everyone was fooled, although you think that the top consulting firm in Boston would have become suspicious, considering the great fall it sustained shortly afterward. Perhaps the sequel served in part to correct this mistake.
This book was premature; it would have been best to combine this with the sequel into one book. If you skip this and read only the latter, you won't be missing much.
Very Realistic and very useful.......2003-12-11
This book is very good, it explains very clearly the different growth concepts with clear definitions, and a very interesting growth matrix. in addition, unlike other books, this book uses a lot of real world examples to illustarte the different concepts and growth startegies. It explains how companies, that succeded, evolved from their core business and developed new products without getting lost in the process. Also, explains why and how some companies failed. The book is realistic, and gives you some tools and matrix that you can apply when analyzing and developing a growth strategy. You should also check out the web site, it has some examples of how to apply the gowth matrix.
Dell has applied this book idea very well.......2003-11-10
This is a very good book for anyone interest in business strategy. Especially reading it with Creative Destruction. One company which has applied this strategy very well is Dell. Its strategy to stay at the core in PC while adjaceny expansion into Printer, PDA ... etc. It stated in Businessweek that it is entering into the low-end (maybe ignorant by market leader) market for market share first. It is similar to a point mentioned in the book. I guess it has a lot to do with Rollin (one of the head of Dell)
Very good.......2002-01-14
Maybe not revolutionary, but definitely making a very clear point that is all too often forgotten by even the biggest companies.
Very useful for those making business plans or those reviewing business strategy. It can definitely help determine how to go build a business and what to focus on to make a business successful.
I found this book truly worth its 5 star rating.

Boundary Layer Theory.......2007-07-01
Good value - well worth the money. I also like the updated sections available in the Springer edition.
Unsurpassed.......2007-05-19
Although I have only the first edition, I still find it to be of immense value, and hands-down superior to any other book on the subject (save the newer edition perhaps). It seamlessly weaves together theory, mathematics, and experimental observation, into a very readable and (surprisingly) interesting text. Because it explains the fundamentals so well, Schlichting's book is one of those rare engineering classics that will continue to be of value for a very long time to come.
Classic book. .......2006-10-30
This is the classic book on the subject to be ever written and retains its class by incorporating some of the recent developments in the boundary layer theory.
A great collection for anyone in the field of turbulence, aerodynamics ...
good book ; bad translation.......2005-01-26
this is a classic book. however, the new 8th edition is not translated very well. i have an older english version (6th edition, 1968) that is translated much better. even where the content is the same between the two editions, the "updated" translation is worse that in the original version.
A Must-have Book for Fluid Mechanics Researchers!.......2000-10-22
This is the best and the most classical fluid mechanics book that i have read. Read it through carefully and you will get much from it. Reading it from time to time can give you many new knowledge every time.

Book Description
Weather Flying is regarded in the industry as the bible of weather flying. Robert Buck, a general aviation and commercial pilot with tens of thousands of hours of flight time, explains weather in a nontechnical way, giving pilots useful understanding of weather and practical knowledge of how to judge it and fly it. Covers weather flying psychology, en route weather changes, radar and how to use it, taking off in bad weather, and much more. Winner of the Flight Safety Foundation's Publication Award; recommended by the FAA.
Customer Reviews:
Still the best practical guide on the market.......2007-06-12
I first read this book early in my private pilot training, many years ago. Needless to say, I did not really understand what I was reading. Coming back to it now, with a number of additional ratings and many more hours of flight time to my name, was a revelation. Almost on every page, I found myself saying, "Yes, that's how it is." Buck really knows what he is talking about, whether it be ice, thunderstorms, turbulence, or transitioning from instruments to visual on the approach. Taking to heart what Buck has to say will first and foremost help you to survive as a pilot by making good weather decisions. Just as importantly, he imparts a great deal of wisdom on how to get maximum utility from the airplane while keeping risk to a low level. However, as indicated earlier, the book is definitely not for beginners. A solid understanding of basic meteorology and a considerable amount of piloting experience are needed to interpret it correctly--and safely.
Essential reading for the GA Instrument pilot.......2006-06-07
As a CFI I have numerous books in my aviation library. This book details flying in weather and the mindset required to be a safe and competent instrument pilot.
Recommeded to me by my instructor after I received my instrument rating I now recommend it to students and associates whenever the subject of flying in weather (or not flying in weather) comes up.
I read Northstar Over My Shoulder prior to buying this book so I had an understanding of Captain Buck's history and experience which added weight to the wisdom obvious in Weather Flying (buy that book too!)
Dealing with the weather.......2005-10-22
Not a lesson on meteorology; more of a lesson on judgment and decision-making. In other words, how does one deal with the weather? What does one do with the information one has?
Bob Buck is a man of authority, vast knowledge and experience when it comes to weather flying. His advice is, therefore, not to be taken lightly.
The book is readable, Buck writes "as he talks and flies, with an easy touch...he makes it simple and plain". The only thing that frustrated me at times was the fact that due to the sheer amount of information and knowledge he wants to impart, he occasionally jumps from one issue to the other, picking up new subjects while seemingly leaving others unfinished.
"The sky is my office".......2005-06-30
It is hard to imagine a pilot with more weather flying experience than Captain Robert Buck. And much of this flying was in the old days: in the early years of the Army Air Corp and a young company called TWA. Much of this flying was accomplished without the assistance of modern instrumentation. Captain Buck travelled the world seeking the most ornery weather he could find, and then flew into it time and time again, compiling the experience and collecting the data that no one else had at the time. Captain Buck shares that experience here. This book is interesting and engaging to the flying enthusiast, essential to the VFR pilot, and absolutely priceless to the aspiring instrument pilot. Every discipline and every pastime has its classics, and WEATHER FLYING is, without a doubt, one of the classics of aviation.
The language of WEATHER FLYING is simple and straightforward. The lessons are practical more than theoretical, though Captain Buck keeps his readers briefed on essential weather theory as well. Virtually every weather situation that a pilot can encounter is covered in this book, from the ordinary to the exotic. Then Captain Buck instructs you how to fly it. The concept is simple and direct; the lessons are comprehensive and pragmatic.
In short, this is not a book to read once and then shelve. The lessons are too important to be forgotten. This is a manual to be taken down and read over and over again by any sort of pilot who flies any sort of aircraft.
Jeremy W. Forstadt
weather is confusing..........2002-05-07
... and will remain so after you read this book. Everything in Buck's book is useful but it is tough to remember all of his rules without a solid grounding in meteorology. The cover's subtitle "a practical book on flying in all kinds of weather" is accurate. This book is about practice, not theory. However, after finishing the book, I was disappointed to find myself as ignorant as ever about weather and completely at the mercy of the FAA briefers.

Book Description
Over the past three decades, information in the aerospace and mechanical engineering fields in general and turbomachinery in particular has grown at an exponential rate. Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer of Turbomachinery is the first book, in one complete volume, to bring together the modern approaches and advances in the field, providing the most up-to-date, unified treatment available on basic principles, physical aspects of the aerothermal field, analysis, performance, theory, and computation of turbomachinery flow and heat transfer.
Presenting a unified approach to turbomachinery fluid dynamics and aerothermodynamics, the book concentrates on the fluid dynamic aspects of flows and thermodynamic considerations rather than on those related to materials, structure, or mechanical aspects. It covers the latest material and all types of turbomachinery used in modern-day aircraft, automotive, marine, spacecraft, power, and industrial applications; and there is an entire chapter devoted to modern approaches on computation of turbomachinery flow. An additional chapter on turbine cooling and heat transfer is unique for a turbomachinery book.
The author has undertaken a systematic approach, through more than three hundred illustrations, in developing the knowledge base. He uses analysis and data correlation in his discussion of most recent developments in this area, drawn from over nine hundred references and from research projects carried out by various organizations in the United States and abroad.
This book is extremely useful for anyone involved in the analysis, design, and testing of turbomachinery. For students, it can be used as a two-semester course of senior undergraduate or graduate study: the first semester dealing with the basic principles and analysis of turbomachinery, the second exploring three-dimensional viscid flows, computation, and heat transfer. Many sections are quite general and applicable to other areas in fluid dynamics and heat transfer. The book can also be used as a self-study guide to those who want to acquire this knowledge.
The ordered, meticulous, and unified approach of Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer of Turbomachinery should make the specialization of turbomachinery in aerospace and mechanical engineering much more accessible to students and professionals alike, in universities, industry, and government.
Turbomachinery theory, performance, and analysis made accessible with a new, unified approach
For the first time in nearly three decades, here is a completely up-to-date and unified approach to turbomachinery fluid dynamics and aerothermodynamics. Combining the latest advances, methods, and approaches in the field, Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer of Turbomachinery features:
- The most comprehensive and complete coverage of the fluid dynamics and aerothermodynamics of turbomachinery to date
- A spotlight on the fluid dynamic aspects of flows and the thermodynamic considerations for turbomachinery (rather than the structural or material aspects)
- A detailed, step-by-step presentation of the analytical and computational models involved, which allows the reader to easily construct a flowchart from which to operate
- Critical reviews of all the existing analytical and numerical models, highlighting the advantages and drawbacks of each
- Comprehensive coverage of turbine cooling and heat transfer, a unique feature for a book on turbomachinery
- An appendix of basic computation techniques, numerous tables, and listings of common terminology, abbreviations, and nomenclature
Broad in scope, yet concise, and drawing on the author's teaching experience and research projects for government and industry, Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer of Turbomachinery explains and simplifies an increasingly complex field. It is an invaluable resource for undergraduate and graduate students in aerospace and mechanical engineering specializing in turbomachinery, for research and design engineers, and for all professionals who areâor wish to beâat the cutting edge of this technology.

An Introduction to Fluid Dynamics
ASIN: 0521598869 |
Book Description
Turbulent Flows is an up-to-date and comprehensive graduate text on this important topic in fluid dynamics. The book consists of two parts: Part I provides a general introduction to turbulent flows, how they behave, how they can be described quantitatively, and their fundamental physical processes. Part II is concerned with different approaches for modeling, or simulating, turbulent flows. Key appendices present the necessary mathematical techniques. While primarily intended for engineering graduate students, this book will also be valuable to students in applied mathematics, physics, oceanography and atmospheric sciences, as well as to researchers and practicing engineers.
Customer Reviews:
Not particularly good........2006-02-18
I bought this book since it was the required text in a Turbulence course. In general, the book is well written and the explanations are clear. The material is organized in two main parts: Fundamentals (7 chapters), and Modeling and Simulation (6 Chapters). Although this book covers a lot of topics, I found that many of them are treated in a somewhat superficial and desultory way, specially in the Fundamentals part. For example, the core of the statistical theory of turbulence, K41 and scaling, is treated rather briefly in Chapter 6 (compare for example with the deep and enlighting discussion given by Frisch's book). Intermittency and anomalous scaling is treated in just a couple of pages. Chapter 5, on free shear flows, and 7, on boundary layers, contains a lot of experimental observations and plots but without a thorough analysis. This is too much of a "textbook", just for students that want to do their homework, but not a good treatise on this rich, deep and fascinating subject. To get real physical insight you need to read books like Frisch, or Mathieu & Scott. Also, Tennekes and Lumley, in spite of have been published more than 30 years ago (in 1972), still contains more interesting discussion on the physics of turbulence, that you miss in Pope's book.
If you want a book to get just some general knowledge on Turbulence, this book can be helpful. If you really want to learn Turbulence to do research on this field I think it's better to start with that other introductory books (before reading the classical treatises [e.g. Monin & Yaglom] and papers). The book by Durbin and Peterson Reif is also better than this one. I have bought all of them, and the least used book in my shelf is Pope's.
Modernized account of turbulence.......2005-09-30
This is an excellent addition to the turbulence textbooks. The physical meanings of equations are well explained and cast in a way that helps the understanding of the subject tremendously. In contrast to earlier textbook by Lumley and Tenneky, this book is much cleaner in explaining the conncetions between the physical phenomenon and the mathematical treatment. However, it lacks the experimental side of the subject, which, however, can be found in other classic textbooks, such as Hinze's Turbulence. This book also has lots of updates on modern modeling techniques, including PDF, DNS and LES. The exercise problems are well organized and complement the context very well. Highly recommended.
best book for pdf........2001-11-14
well, Professor Pope is the best professor so far on pdf modeling of turbulent. Before the book was printed, he use it as a textbook on MAE732, Turbulent analysis, in Cornell univeristy. we are really impressed by pdf.

Book Description
In this book, after a brief review of the more popular turbulence models, we present and discuss accurate and efficient numerical methods for solving the boundary-layer equations with turbulence models based on algebraic formulas (mixing length, eddy viscosity) or partial-differential transport equations. A computer program employing the Cebeci-Smith model and the k-e model for obtaining the solution of two-dimensional incompressible turbulent flows without separation is discussed in detail and is presented in the accompanying CD.
The numerical solution of the boundary-layer equations with flow separation is also discussed and an interactive boundary-layer method developed by the author is described in detail. A computer program for obtaining solutions on airfoils and wakes for a wide range of angles of attack, including stall, is discussed and presented in the accompanying CD. In many respects, this book can be seen as complimentary and supplementary to the author's
Analysis of Turbulent Flows.
