better then the basics.......2007-09-17
This a good book for the person who knows more then the basics and want's to move on to the next step before going a course in futher education
Not for Amateurs!.......2007-09-15
This is an excellent reference book and readable (mostly) as well. That said, if you're a homeowner just looking for a "how-to" on maybe additional zoning or adding a new loop, this is not the book for you. You could quite literally design a system for the most complex residence using this book IF you know the basics of plumbing and HVAC work and are pretty good at basic mathmatics. It is not so much a how-to as a what-to book, so bear that in mind.
Well written resource, covers the bases very thoroughly.......2007-05-15
Great book. Not all the way through it yet, but giving me more confidence to do my own radiant heat project. Heat loss calcs not a big mystery any more. Minor lack of detail clarifications when it comes to underslab foam insulation options. EPS--Expanded foam is perfectly acceptable alternative (and cheaper) than XPS--Extruded, when ordered to engineered compressive strength requirements. Otherwise it is giving me excellent ideas for doing my job right the first time. Don't be disuaded by cost of book. Value is there in spades--included CD is very nice.
Hydronics design.......2007-05-14
As an architect, I was impressed with the clarity of the information and the step-by-step design process. It was so helpful, I even bought the software package the authors have developed for easily calculating hydronic designs.
Good Solid Engineering, THE Hydronics Reference Manual.......2007-02-02
I am a special projects manager for a major tankless water heater company. I bought this book to further my knowledge of hydronic and radiant heating so I could better assist our customers when they call me for advice.
I have some experience with plumbing in the solar field and have attended a class at Uponor, so I come to this book with an amateur's level of experience.
I have only started the book, but I can say that it is extremely complete and well written. From what I have come across in trade journal articles that deal with our business, John Siegenthaler is no doubt the "Rajah of
Radiant" and all things hot water.
I use it constantly now as a reference book to learn and to help others. I plan to use it someday soon to help design my own radiant system in my solar powered straw-bale retirement home "out yonder" somewhere.
The reason I rated it as a 4 instead of a 5 is because I could not find anything about using tankless heaters as a heat source. John covers everything from normal residential gas fired tanks to high efficiency complex boilers, but doesn't address tankless which is becoming more and more popular with radiant because of the low temperature requirements (85º ~ 100º).
This second edition is dated 2004. Unfortunately, hydronic technology is moving at warp speed and we are already in 2007!

Geek Pool Book.......2007-09-09
We bought a house with an inground pool 5 years ago. A bit of a surprise really. We had ZERO experience with pools, and knew only by rumor that we were buying something that required a LOT of care and maintenance. I hunted through bookstores for a guide I could learn from. I am a technical writer by profession, so I know a thing or two about how to present complex ideas to the innocent. Browsing through this volume I was impressed with the author's skill at getting ideas across (well structure informattion - here's the idea, heres' the basics, here's the gory details). I bought it on the strength of his organization and writing, not on the content (about which I knew zilch).
It is still in regular use 5 years later. YES, it is technical. YES, it sometimes provides way too much information for the novice. But if you have a brain and you can handle some complexity, this book is BRILLIANT. I knew nothing, and in very short order I learned what I needed for basic care. This book is a bible for pool maintenance. Over the years I've learned (from experience guided by this book) how to strip a DE filter, how to repair my Polaris pool robot, and more about water chemistry than I ever thought possible. This past summer ('07) it guided us through a plaster refinishing (pool is ~30 years old) and taught me how to restart the pool.
It IS written by a pool professional, FOR pool professionals, and even has advice on how to run a pool maintenance business (which is of zero interest to me). But if you can learn from a pro talking to other pros, this book is it.
The "Haynes" manual for pools.......2006-11-10
This book is to swimming pools what the "Haynes" car maintenance manuals are to your car. It contains all the information required to maintain your pool, even though probably someone else is going to do it for you. If you own a pool, it is worth reading the book to understand what the service technician should and shouldn't be doing, and when the pool is in need of help. It can also help you save some money by doing the work yourself. The book is entirely about maintaining a pool, not owning one. It is written in a friendly, readable style, and you can simply keep it as a reference manual to know what to do when things go wrong. If you are considering installing a pool or spa, this book will show you what you are letting yourself in for. If there is one omission in the text it is that the author ignores electric pool cleaning robots, though they are probably the most effective way of keeping the pool clean.
Save your Money.......2006-04-24
This book was a wasste of time and money. The book focuses more on being a pool professional then the actual "how-to" a pool owner needs to work on their pool. It has more information on changing a light fixtures and on bilking wealthy Malibu folks out of cash then actual useful information.
After reading this (useless!) book I went to my local library and reearched several books on the subject, there is a title called "What color is your pool?" That has lots of information for the first time pool owner. There may be other more technical guides our there, but this book has few drawings and illustrations, poor writing, and ultimately is lacking in adequate information.
Trust me...SAVE YOUR MONEY!
Helpful Tool.......2005-08-26
This book is a helpful tool for any pool owner or someone interested in having a pool.
NOT the best book to buy........2005-05-15
This is my first Amazon review, but I feel compelled to share this experience with others.
This book as said to be for the professional and the novice. It was said to contain all the information one could possibly need. It was suggested that you could take what you want from the weighty tome, and leave the rest. In reality the book is clearly NOT written for a new pool owner. In fact, its not written for an experience pool owner. The book was written for a pool repairman. Moreover, it does not contain the practicle information a pool professoinal would require to steer clients toward pool products.
Which cleaner should you get- Vacume or pressure driven? No answer here. What about a heating- Solar, oil, gas? No advice, no direction....
In fact, the book reads more like the diary of a pool man. About how one manufacurer was driven out of business by refusing to compromise quality, or how he cared for the pool of come Malibu celebrity.
Having recently purchased a home with an in-ground pool, I have read three books so far, and gotten quite and education. This book however failed in almost every regard. Finnally, the book deliniates ways of making money of customers as a pool professional. Information I simply have no use for.
Lastly, it bears mentioning that there is a quote on the book jacket from another Amazon reviewer "If you want to buy one book on swimming pools this is it!" Why not a quote from a noted pool authority or publication? Why quote some anonymous amzazon.com user like you or me? Most likely because there were no favorable reviews from newspapers or magazines.
This book was more then a waste of 30 dollars. It was also a waste of time. Unless you need to know how to change things like light fixtures in to pool. The book is not awful, so I gave it 2 stars, but I urge you to look elsewhere.
Book Description
The updated, cornerstone engineering resource of solar energy theory and applications. Solar technologies already provide energy for heat, light, hot water, electricity, and cooling for homes, businesses, and industry. Because solar energy only accounts for one-tenth of a percent of primary energy demand, relatively small increases in market penetration can lead to very rapid growth rates in the industryâwhich is exactly what has been projected for coming years as the world moves away from carbon-based energy production. Solar Engineering of Thermal Processes, Third Edition provides the latest thinking and practices for engineering solar technologies and using them in various markets.
This Third Edition of the acknowledged leading book on solar engineering features:
- Complete coverage of basic theory, systems design, and applications
- Updated material on such cutting-edge topics as photovoltaics and wind power systems
- New homework problems and exercises

The Bible -- Not Just for Thermal.......2007-03-24
This is the textbook of fundamentals of solar energy engineering.
An excellent solar energy textbook.......2000-04-05
The second edition of "Solar Engineering..." is a much expanded and updated version of the original, which was already a decent textbook. It covers almost everything there is to know about engineering of solar energy systems, and the presentation is clear and well organized. The division into "basics" and "applications" sections is a very sensible way to get oriented before plunging into the depth of a specific technology, especially since solar thermal applications tend to cover a wide variety of technologies. The gradual and systematic approach makes this book a very good textbook for beginners. The wide scope makes it also a pretty good reference source for practitioners who are looking for a specific bit of information.
The new chapter on photovoltaic cells is a nice touch. While this is not a "thermal process," it is still important for any practitioner of solar thermal to know what's happening in the other corner of the field. A presentation of PV at the level that can be understood by non-physicists is a very welcome addition.
My only complaint is that recent significant developments are not well represented (I guess much of this developed after the book was written, so this complaint is not really aimed at the authors). Topics such as non-imaging concentrators, high-temperature thermal receivers for Brayton cycle, and solar chemistry are either briefly mentioned or absent altogether. The more traditional applications such DHW are of course presented in detail, but their significance to the energy market remains negligible. I would prefer to see more on applications that have the potential to make a major impact. Hopefully this will be included in the next edition...

From a Surf Photographer.......2005-10-12
This is an excellent book. With the use of multiple sequential photos, you will see how each of the most popular moves and stunts are done. It's great for the surfer, and great for photographers to see the sequential parts of the move to determine the best timing for shots. An interesting read and a great way to familiarize yourself with the surf culture.
Great.......2005-08-06
This is hands down the best book on surfing I have ever read. Lots of helpful photos and explanations. Highly recommended.
Great Book from a Great Surfer.......2005-01-01
Great info that goes far beyond the regular "Learn to Surf" books. A lot of Taj slang & surf jargon but those who've been surfing for some time can really benefit from the advanced techniques & descriptions from a pro. Also a very fun book with insight by shapers, surfers, & Taj himself. Developiing surfers need more good books like this.

Gorgeous and useful as source of inspiration.......2006-10-29
This book has some innovative pools -- especially the one under a set of glass stairs in the entryway of a London building. There are indoor pools, outdoor pools, indoor-outdoor pools, the now-ubiquitous "infinite edge" pools and even "rustic" pools that look like natural ponds. Gorgeous! The book also covers Jacuzzis and pool-related structures, such as cabanas, waterfalls, and so on, but the focus here is high-end "cool" pools.
Product Description
This superb fingerpicking reference book features 101 authentic, traditional blues fingerstyle licks for guitar. The goldmine of licks is divided into the following categories: Four-beat licks; Eight-beat licks; Introductions and turnarounds. The licks are written in both standard notation and guitar tablature, and recorded at a moderate speed on the companion CD. This is not a method book for beginners, but a nice collection of licks for guitarists who have some fingerstyle ability and want to do some exploring. Another GREAT guitar book from Red Dog Music Books.

Book Description
We have been repeatedly warned by leading medical professionals and government health officials that a severe influenza pandemic is a very real possibility, with potential global death tolls exceeding 100 million. We are told that a pandemic will likely last 12-18 months in multiple waves, and to expect widespread social disruption. We are told that we need to stockpile non-perishable food and water, as our food supply chain and utilities may become severely degraded or completely inoperative. Yet there is little information available from them on how families can prepare for such a long term traumatic event.
This book lays out in detail the planning, preparation, and actions to take to avoid an inevitable mass scramble for suppliers' small and increasingly backlogged inventories of storable food, water storage and purification equipment, emergency lighting and communications, alternative transportation, and a host of other important necessities. The book provides planning guidelines and practical how-to for the;
- type, quantity, and source of non-perishable food
- techniques for collecting, storing, and purifying water
- approaches for reliable lighting and staying informed in the event of a electrical grid collapse
- formulas for sizing a solar PV system for backup (or everyday) power
- ways to keep your house warm in the winter
- measures to protect your family from public unrest
- procedures to treat sick family members when hospitals are overwhelmed
- approaches to simple cleaning and sanitation
- and a host of other preparations needed for families to stay healthy and safe during a serious influenza pandemic.
Reviews
“The book is crammed with lots of very valuable information on preparing for this emergency with the focus on the needs of the family. I found it very informative and helpful for making and improving the quality of my family’s plan. This is a unique and very timely contribution to the preparedness literature that is long overdue. It is a must read and reference text for anyone who is serious about preparing their home and family for the possibility of a severe influenza pandemic.”
-- Dr. Grattan Woodson, MD, author The Bird Flu Preparedness Planner, The Bird Flu Manual
“An intensively researched, user-friendly, and imminently practical crash course in surviving on limited resources. Whether coming as a pandemic, hurricane, or ice storm, disaster-induced disruption of societal support systems is increasingly inevitable, and this guide is a must-have to help you and your loved ones plan to survive.”
-- Thomas Honey, owner of Honey Electric Solar Inc.
“William Stewart’s How to Prepare for a Pandemic covers the breadth of disaster planning and is an important, comprehensive contribution to the literature of pandemic preparation.”

Will Stewart's book on family preparedness is unusual because it is written to help families survive both the short as well as the long emergency. This reference text focuses on practical solutions to providing water, food, energy, and heat when our usual sources of these essentials have become unreliable or unavailable. Will's straightforward approach to the issues makes this book a valuable addition to the library of anyone concerned with basic survival in the urban or rural setting during the short or long emergency.
