This is a fantastic book for the beginner botanist and gardener. Though it doesn't mention every weedy plant you may run into (and if it did, the book would likely be two inches thick), it does include most weeds that you will run into. What I really love about this book is that for each species mentioned, there are usually two or three accompanying photos, making a quick ID unusually easy. Like most identification guides, this book works best when accompanied by a more comprehensive guide for those species that a quick reference guide can't provide.

This book is absolutely the best on weeds of the Northeast. This is a must for the library of every gardener or landscaper. It is easily readable, yet has the depth for those who need greater information about the subject. Easily, the most practical format, and it has a detailed index for cross referencing between the common and taxonomic. It also includes a chart on grasses.

On August 5, 1949, lightning came crashing down in the vast spruce forest above Seeley Lake, Montana, and touched off a roaring blaze. As every Westerner knows, lightning means fire, but the fire that raged through Mann Gulch that day was huge--the sort that occurs only every few decades. A battery of paratrooper-firefighters, many of them fresh veterans of World War II, had been anticipating it, and even looking forward to the chance to fight a great fire. Before the day ended thirteen of those smokejumpers lay dead, their charred remains evidence that something had gone terribly wrong. The Tragic Story of the Mann Gulch Fire.......2007-07-28
This true story by the author of A River Runs Through It tells the events surrounding the Mann Gulch Fire in 1949. A good portion focuses on the smokejumpers (paratrooping firefighters)13 out of 16 of which perished in the fire.
In those days, the smokejumping program was very new having been introduced within the past 8 to 10 years. The men had to be between the ages of 18 and 30, single, and in superb physical condition. The main tools they carried were a shovel and something called a Pulaski which is a combination ax and hoe built into one. They utilized these tools to dig fire lines, and fell trees ahead of the fire so as to reduce the amount of fuel and prevent it jumping from one tree to the next.
When dropped from the plane onto the ground by the fire, a foreman would be in charge of the crew as they fought the fire. In the instance of the Mann Gulch fire in Montana, the fire started out as a fairly decent sized fire. It then progressed into what is known as a "blowup." This occurred as a result of a combination of factors such as fuel type, moisture, incline of terrain, and wind.
It quickly got out of control and the crew had to run for their lives. Occasionally, in a blowup a vortex of fire will be formed which will sweep across a vast area burning everything in its path. It looks and functions like a tornado. I recently talked with a man who used to be a farmer and he indicated that when they burned fields to prepare them for future seasons a fire vortex would sometimes occur. He said it was an awesome and amazing sight to behold.
During the blowup it was not possible for the majority of the men to outrun the fire and they perished mainly from suffocation due to lack of oxygen. The foreman saw this happening and created a secondary fire to try to create a burned out place which would provide shelter from the main fire. Unfortunately, amidst the confusion of the fire, the men did not understand the foreman and thought he had gone crazy to be lighting a second fire. He did survive but all but 2 others did not.
A secondary portion of the book analyzes the various components of the fire, what caused it, and some of the science behind fire. Maclean spent around 12 years researching the book, gathering documents, interviewing the 2 remaining survivors and returning to the site of the fire. He was well equipped to tell the story having spent time as a forest fire fighter in his younger years before going on to be a literature professor and writer. The book was masterfully written but slightly meticulous at times. It is the type of story that would make a very dramatic movie if a studio were interested in producing it.
Uneven but thoughtful and inspiring.......2007-02-08
Pieced together after the author's death, you can see what this book would have been had he lived to complete it. In places, you have to push yourself through it. Still, it is worth your time. Tracing a tragedy trying to resurrect peace for souls long gone, you are put in touch with feelings and emotions that affect us all.
If you love the outdoors, adventure, and real men doing real things, this book is for you.
Math?.......2006-12-27
Has anyone out there checked Maclean's math on pages 229-230 of the paperback edition (second section of Chapter 12)? I'm no math expert, but shouldn't the hypotenuse of a right triangle with sides of 1,320 and 140 yards be a little over 1,327 yards, and not the 1,400 yards he indicates? Moreover, didn't all of the 140 yard vertical gain occur in the final half mile of travel, since the crew was moving on contour for the first quarter mile of "the race"? This would yield a total actual distance of only 1,331 yards. I was surprised by these errors given how meticulous Maclean was in the rest of his research.
This is a great book, though.
Reads like a detective novel.......2006-11-16
First, its important to note that the author did not complete this novel. Unfortunately, Maclean died prior to its completion, so others had to pull it all together for publishing. This perhaps lends to what I see as an "unpolished" quality, with some choppiness. That said, I felt it still merited four stars for what the author did. Maclean's research is extensive, and his conclusions are derived from numerous authoritative sources. It read like a mystery / detective novel for me, and I had trouble putting it down.
A tragic and wonderful story.......2006-11-09
This is a fine story of brave men in a tragic struggle. A struggle that they loose. The entire book covers the 16 minutes it took for these smoke jumpers to land, confront a "10'oclock" fire and die. Norman Maclean researches the human and scientific causes of this disaster. It was especially of intrest to me because when I went through the fire fighter academy here in Northern California, this was an incident that we studied. Norman Maclean writes in a sparcer prose than in "A River Runs Through It, and other stories" but it is no less facinating and we learn details about the authors life, that makes this story a personal one. He did not finish the book before his death and the last section was written with minimal editing from the original manuscript. This section is the most beautiful and moving of the entire book. I cannot recommend this book highly enouph.

Mc Phee presents three well written, beautifully researched case studies, short term marvels of engineering skill and determination, doomed from the outset by humanity's ignorance and disregard of natural processes. This book examines an unstable river system in Southern Louisiana, unpredictable massive lava flows in Iceland, and episodic debris flows in Los Angeles mountain foothills. Each case presents the heroic bad judgement of short-lived humans in conflict with gradual natural processes, catastrophic at long intervals, by human measure, and ultimately inxorable, indifferent long-term to our futile efforts at intervention. He wastes few judgemental words on the human folly his stories chronicle, but lets them speak for themselves. He fills the shoes of both writer and teacher.
Elegant writing on man's ignorance about nature.......2006-11-27
As always, McPhee is a pleasure to read and a pleasure to review. In these chronicles, based both on narrative and on interviews, McPhee's big theme is ambition (a good thing), hubris (no problem, simple answer), and willful ignorance.
McPhee talks about three major `wars' against nature - the effort to keep the Mississippi River running through New Orleans, the semi-successful effort in Iceland to keep a volcano from filling in a critical harbor, and the ludicrous attempt to prevent fire and flooding from destroying the east side of Los Angeles. In each of these, the threats are portrayed as utterly real and frightening, the science is lucid without being boring or full of jargon, and the people speak for themselves.
If you ever wanted to change the inevitable force of geology by piling up sandbags, stop a lava flow by spraying water on it, or keep your house from being filled with boulders and sand (debris flow) - this book will be a lesson on fighting rear guard actions against enemies that will, eventually, win.
People's Efforts, People's Errors.......2006-06-18
McPhee examines three recent attempts by man to alter natural changes on the surface of the planet. The first is the Corps of Engineers attempt to control of the flow and course of the Mississippi as it heads, with ever increasing power, toward New Orleans, or Texas if it had its way. And if you think that there was not some early warning of eventual problems in New Orleans, note that this book was written in 1989. The second is the partially successful effort by the Icelanders to use water from fire hoses to halt the flow of lava from a very destructive volcano. Finally, the third is the battle between Los Angeles and one of natures weapons of mass destruction, the debris flows coming down from the San Gabriel mountains that, with the Pacific, frame the city. McPhee has also written intriguing books about the geologic histories of Nevada (Basin and Range), Wyoming (Rising from the Plains), California (Assembling California) and about tectonic plates, ice and oil (In Suspect Terrain). In the process he has portrayed the important English pioneers in the discipline such as Hutton and Lyell, in addition to Agassiz and his fascination with glaciers.
The flow of the Mississippi with its enormous drainage extending from Western New York to Montana has been increasing with every newly paved Wal-Mart or football stadium parking lot in the Midwest. In the process it has carved out the sediment that forms the fan that extended the coast line of Louisiana over fifty miles into the Gulf in the last century. Historically its mouth has wandered for nearly two hundred miles along the Gulf coast between Mississippi and Texas, creating most of Louisiana. Its flow of sixty-five kilotons (two million cubic feet of water) per second in high years is now channeled by the levies, which are not without defects as demonstrated by recent hurricanes. But that doesn't mean upstream threats can be ignored. The Atchafalaya, with a much steeper drop and connected to the Mississippi by the Old River in Northern Louisiana, is constantly bidding for the Ohio and Missouri mud that gives the Mississippi its color. The saga of the construction efforts by the Corps to keep it as a safety valve to prevent the flooding of New Orleans, and not have it turn the lower Mississippi river basin (the "American Ruhr" as the locals call it) into a pasture or salt water lake, is McPhee's first war story. It has been a "close run thing" with a near disaster in 1973 when the Old River Control, an enormous weir, nearly failed. The proliferation of commissions, competing commercial interests and colorful characters overshadow the geology, but the movement of sediment is still the enemy and the story keeps it under "close surveillance".
The attempt by the Icelanders to control the flow of lava erupting from a volcano on one of their offshore islands is magisterial. This effort is a saga of human endurance, persistence and geological knowledge. He describes Iceland as one of the two most productive geologic hot spots on the planet (the other being Hawaii). However, while the Hawaiian Islands are moving with the Pacific plate, Iceland is being torn apart by the Mid-Atlantic ridge which runs directly beneath it. The 2000 degree (F.) magma under it came up, in 1973, to punch through the sixty mile thick plate of Vestmannaeyjar island "like a sewing machine needle punches through cloth." The offshore island has one of Iceland's main fishing harbors. Indeed, it is one of the most active in the North Atlantic and hence worth saving.
The lava spread in all directions from the volcano, covering most of the island and threatening its harbor. The government decided that it would try to save the harbor by cooling the lava and holding it back with fire and other large water hoses. An Icelandic physicist calculated that one cubic meter of water would change seven-tenths of a cubic meter of lava from red hot flow to hard rock. The water hoses were brought from Reykjavik, the capital, and the American air base nearby at Keflavik. They were trained on the ever encroaching lava day and night at the direction of the fire chief from the base who became known, not unaffectionately or undeservedly, as "Patton".
They succeeded, but not until three million cubic yards of tephra fell on the island's town (compared to only 500,000 cubic yards, which fell on Pompeii), and three hundred feet of basalt rose next to it. Nature gave in and the eruption stopped after five and a half months. It had increased the size of the island by twenty percent, and perhaps will press its case against the harbor at a later time. While the topography, characters and customs of The Big Easy and Tinseltown may be familiar to us, Iceland is not. Tidbits about the oldest democratic parliament, the Icelandic prohibition against selling beer in favor of "Norwegian Cough Drops" (shots of Johnny Walkersson and Jack Danielsson), the local learning on how to avoid volcanic bombs, etc., add the color. Pages turn.
His final example of man's attempts is the effort of the City of Los Angeles to keep the San Gabriel Mountains (three thousand feet higher than the Rockies from bottom to top) from sending debris into the foothills of the city and washing away houses in the process. Los Angeles has built more than 120 catch basins to arrest the debris. McPhee describes the effect of fire upon the chaparral in the mountains (it provides an impermeable cover which sends the water runoff in a large storm cascading down the valley) is impressive as one of those ideas that seemed good at the time. However, other than the effect of the angle of repose, this section is a bit of a filler in an otherwise very interesting book.
Read this one for pleasure.......2006-05-17
There are books that should be read for the value of the information they contain. There are books that should be read for the beauty and power of their language. There are few that achieve both. This intensively researched page turner never fails to combine clarity and eloquence. Mr. McPhee clearly loves the people and places he describes, and treats them in a witty, friendly way that left me laughing and wanting more.
Nature Bats Last.......2006-02-25
This is among my favorite McPhee books. Not only does he bring his superb skills at description, characterization and narrative flow to these three linked stories; he manages to set out a subtle subtext without ever being explicit.
In a lot of ways, humanity's history on this planet is a struggle against nature. McPhee focuses here on three instances of modern struggles against geologic forces. River flooding, and in particular the channel of the lower Mississippi River; volcanism, and in particular lava flows in Iceland and Hawaii; and erosion, and in particular mass-wasting in the San Gabriel Mountains in Los Angeles.
The message in each case is that mankind can triumph - or at least cope - in the short term, but in the long term, the natural forces will prevail. The Mississippi River will change its channel, despite the sometimes arrogant, sometimes defensive efforts of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Lava flows will eventually overwhelm Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland. The naive and credulous Angelenos who build their homes in the steep valleys of the San Gabriels, despite the mudflow management efforts of the County, are eventually doomed. Nature bats last. The rabbit runs for his life; the coyote runs for his supper. The Corps has to succeed each time; the Mississippi only has to succeed once.
McPhee is far too good a writer to ever come out and say this. Instead, he reports what he has seen and what he has been told and lets his narrative convey his points. That reporting is simply brilliant. As I have argued in other reviews, McPhee is America's greatest living expository writer. This is one of his best books.

The Best Ever on This Topic.......2007-08-24
This contribution by Russell A. Barkley is a masterpiece in review and analysis of the confusing, confounding and frustrating topic of ADHD. Dr. Barkley's book is pitched at somewhat higher than the average layperson, maybe toward the BA in psychology or healthcare professional. However, the clear prose style will articulate to those with first hand daily experience in coping with ADHD in family members. The behavioral scenarios layed out by Dr. Barkley hit close to home for caregivers in this area. A must read for those serious about learning about ADHD.
I am both appalled and scared at this piece of literature........2006-06-27
I know one can't really write a review for a book one has not yet read. But from what I have heard and read from other people who have seen this work--yes, I say "work" because that's exactly what this author is--I am saddened and appalled that this man is called an "expert" on ADHD. I have combined-type ADD myself, and even if I did not, I would certainly not read something that is so utterly defensive in nature and not at all directed toward the goal of helping us to understand ADHD, but making a mockery of those of us who have it, parents who have children with ADHD (and/or parents who have ADHD themselves), and TRUE experts who actually want to inform with no ulterior motives in mind.
How dare this man basically tell me I'm less than human. He should be "properly delt with" as well.

I am a clinical psychology doctoral student with ADHD who has sat and listened to Dr. Barkley's lectures, in person, on this subject at an ADHD seminar. From someone who knows this condition from the inside, this literature through my studies, and much theoretical literature outside of this field, here are my impressions:
1. Dr. Barkley's recommendations for treatment of ADHD are useful to both those of us who possess this difference and for parents as well. He has done much good work in this area.
2. Dr. Barkley is clearly threatened by newer perspectives on ADHD based in evolutionary psychology that may, in fact, help explain why this difference, which appears to have a strong genetic basis, continues to exist in such large numbers in the population. He is disparaging and rather arrogant in his treatment of others' ideas on the subject in person, making jokes at their expense which I was appalled that other psychologist appeared to find humorous.
3. In person, he also makes jokes at the expense of children with ADHD. He does not appear to have empathy for those with this difference; his empahty appears limited to those who must "deal" with this difference in others, be it parents, teachers, employers, etc. Again, I was appalled at his crass attempts at humor targeted at individuals with ADHD during the seminar I attended. It was akin to making "fat jokes" at a medical seminar on obesity, although Dr. Barkley seemed oblivious to the lack of propriety of such jokes, and furthermore, did not appear to believe that anyone in the educated audience he was addressing could suffer from ADHD.
4. He is so married to his own theoretical views, which have made him a "renowned expert" in the area of ADHD that many of his attacks on other theoretical viewpoints are clearly defensive in nature and aimed to protect his career and status in the field. His disdain for Thomas Hartman was quite apparent at the seminar, for example, although there is now some evidence that Hartmann's idea (it's not quite a theory yet) that individuals with ADHD were adaptive in past cultural environments is quite possible and supported by evidence concerning other conditions that were once protective in different physical environments (i.e., sickle cell anemia and its protection against malaria).
All in all, my recommendation is to listen to his treatment planning, but take his theories with several grains of salt.

This book offers hope in a way that many attitudes don't offer.
The criticisms of the book surprise me. Everyone talks about strategies. The author is doing that also and doing it in a hopeful way. I hate the term, attention deficit. Most people are too quick to feel that a student can't develop self-control. If a person thinks they can't control themselves, they can't. One of the psychiatrists in the mental health center where I work said that the largest handicap is often a patient's perception of the diagnosis.
There are several children's books that help children develop strategies for self-control and a hopeful attitude. One is a new book titled, Whoa Wiggle-worm. One of the characters is named Lickety-split. Cool and uncool nicknames is one of the things they deal with in the book. Self-control is shown on a level that children can relate to.
Excellent study presenting a new theory of ADHD.......2003-02-05
My main reason for writing is to point out that the earlier reviewer who criticized Barkley for the passage about the 3 Little Pigs completely misunderstood the point Barkley was trying to make. Barkley was not saying that he thought that ADHD people deserved what they got; he was saying that some people who misunderstood what ADHD was all about might believe that ADHD people deserved what they got. The reviewer did not read Barkley carefully.

Straight-forward, Easy-to-Use, this text offers basic design information for those new to the subject of thermal oxidation. Although lacking complete design detail, it offers excellent rule-of-thumb information for those needing a 85% design. Lacking is a cost estimation section and detail engineering information.
