Book Description

The acclaimed national bestseller-a no-holds-barred account of what you can really expect when you're expecting

Oh, the joys of pregnancy! There's the gassiness, constipation, queasiness, and exhaustion, the forgetfulness, crankiness, and the constant worry. Of course, no woman is spared the discomforts and humiliations of pregnancy, but most are too polite to complain or too embarrassed to talk about them. Not Jenny McCarthy!

In the New York Times best-selling Belly Laughs, actress and new mother Jenny McCarthy reveals the naked truth about the tremendous joys, the excruciating pains, and the unseemly disfigurement that go along with pregnancy. Never shy, frequently crude, and always laugh-out-loud funny, McCarthy covers it all in the grittiest of girlfriend detail. From morning sickness and hormonal rage, to hemorrhoids, pregnant sex, and the torture and sweet relief that is delivery, Belly Laughs is must-read comic relief for anyone who is pregnant, who has ever been pregnant, is trying to get pregnant, or indeed, has ever been born!

3 out of 5 stars take it or leave it.......2007-10-05

My sister in law bought me this book because people told her it was soooo funny. But I wasn't really that impressed. It was funny but I wasn't laughing at loud or anything. Probably not a book I would read again or buy as a gift for anyone else.

4 out of 5 stars A nice change of pace..........2007-09-12

I bought this book seeking something other than the typical "What to expect when you're expecting", and that's exactly what I got. I am a sarcastic, slightly cynical person... this book was perfect for me. Jenny McCarthy is straight to the point, and shockingly honest. The book is sincere, but with the comedy edge that makes it less cheesy than most pregnancy books.

5 out of 5 stars Great read for every pregnant woman.......2007-09-10

The book is very honest and very funny. Jenny does a great job at sharing all her embarassing pregnancy stories and reasures us that what we are expieriencing is in fact normal!

4 out of 5 stars more comical than informative........2007-09-07

This book is easy reading however, its not as informative as I'd hoped. I am pregnant for the first time (writing under my husbands name!), and was looking for something funny AND informative. The best book for this topic I've found is "The Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy" by Vicky Iovine. She is hilarious, and VERY informative and covers every topic. This book basically tells stories of Jenny's pregnancy - which is great - but only one persons story.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money.......2007-09-06

This book was a complete waste of time (the whole hour it took to read it) and money. I found many other books much more informative, upfront and honest.

Book Description

The classic text, Interaction Design by Sharp, Preece and Rogers is back in a fantastic new 2 nd Edition!

New to this edition:

"The best basis around for user-centered interaction design, both as a primer for students as an introduction to the field, and as a resource for research practitioners to fall back on. It should be labelled 'start here'."
—Pieter Jan Stappers, ID-StudioLab, Delft University of Technology

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Desining Interaction Design.......2007-09-23

So, I bought this book "Interaction Design, 2nd Edition" by Sharp, Rogers and Preece, and I thought maybe the world is interested in my two cents. So here it goes ;-)

Despite the fact that the authors use a lot of words in order to explain even the simplest facts, the book is written concisely and presents a clearly understandable train of thought that leads from the very first introductory page to the very last reference page. The authors start out by giving small introductions to every chapter, explaining what is covered on the following pages. A large amount of boxes with extra information and "comments" help to deepen the insight of the covered material. Many pictures, drawings and graphs visualize very abstract sections and a (very) short summary after each chapter is of great value when you would like to freshen up what you have read earlier. The book's layout clearly is geared towards students, as it incorporates many colored boxes and pictures, without, however, being inconsistent. This makes it possible to skim through the book and look up some information without reading through entire sections. Experts in Human-Computer Interaction might wish for a lower amount of examples to bring a point across and would like the authors to have focused on the details a little more. Also, the fact that the authors make a lot of inline citations gives rise to the impression that they only repeat other's ideas. Yet, in fact, the book incorporates a fair amount of the authors' research (as one can easily see in the references), which is presented most modestly.

The book is literally on interaction design, NOT usability testing and NOT on other HCI methodology. If one is interested in that, I would strongly recommend Kuniavsky (2003) and Rubin (1994). If you are interested in interaction design and the principles that lead to a good user experience, this book is for you. Especially novices in ID will appreciate the level of detail, the amount of examples and extra information and the thorough explanations. Experts will find this book helpful and invaluable, yet sometimes a little wordy.

5 out of 5 stars An essential introduction to HCI.......2007-05-16

I think this book is a must-read, essential of the introduction to HCI.
It covers all the important aspects of interaction design with an important and coherent message--user-centeredness for design. It is not a mere collection of the elements that need to be learned in HCI. The authors emphasize the importance of user-centeredness in interaction design, and exhaustively and thoughtfully integrate all the knowledge that is essential to this approach in the field of HCI.
I would strongly recommend this book to any serious instructors for HCI who like to teach the state-of-art directions and approaches in user-centered interaction design in HCI with covering all the important concepts founded in cognitive psychology, software development and design methods, and various user study techniques to be used in interaction design.

4 out of 5 stars I barely spent time on this textbook........2006-12-23

It was somehow helpful to understand on some topics.
However, Interaction Design is kind of subjective topic.
Hence, I think this book is quite good on giving some examples to make a clear point.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-11-11

there were almost 20 pages missing
on both chapters 8 and 9
this is very disappointing...

4 out of 5 stars One of the Groundbreaking Books on HCI..........2006-11-06

If you work in application design or development, software, or web design... READ THIS BOOK! It will take your work to the next level.

Be warned, though... it is terribly boring! You'll think you're in college again. Don't put it down though, it's important knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars great excitement.......2007-09-17

I really enjoyed this latest book by jenny nimmo (although I always wonder if her last name is owwin spelled backwards). All of our villains make great showings in this book. Two new villains are introduced, Dagbert Endless whose talent is to drown people and Aunt Venetia's new stepson who has the ability to move stone. They and the rest of the bloor's crew are out to prevent charlie from saving Asa who angered the bloors by changing sides in the last book. Now that the red king's tree and charlie's dad have awakened all craziness is breaking loose. Dagbert is especially interesting as he is developing new powers throughout the book and we see he needs gold sea figurines to control himself, although we don't know why. The book feels as if it is the beginning of a new series of adventures so don't expect all of the new questions to be answered
An altogether delightful book.

5 out of 5 stars Charlie Bone books.......2007-08-29

I have purchased all of the Charlie Bone books for my grandson (age 9). He loves them all and has reread them all at least once.

5 out of 5 stars charlie bones .......2007-08-18

jenny nimmo brings a world of fasination, mystery and a need for another book with charlie bones and the friends of special talents.
each book brings a great adventure for all her readers.

5 out of 5 stars Charlie Bone and the Beast.......2007-08-08

I thought this was Jenny Nimmo's best book yet, and I've read them all. It was well-written, with a good, exciting plot and storyline. The characters were well developed and I liked them. I thought it was a satisfying continuation of the series' story.

4 out of 5 stars When Charlie Bone Gets Older, He Aspires To Be Harry Potter.......2007-08-04

Call me a sheep. I'm as big a fan as the next kid of Harry Potter on the edge of my seat awaiting each new installment (and now there's no more edge of my seat moments with Harry Potter). So while I'm waiting, it was good to find Jenny Nimmo's Charlie Bone.

Another boy going to another school not solely comprised of wizards, but with enough of them to make it seem so. While the series may seem clone-like, I still think it's fantastic for the slightly younger wizard in your household. They're much easier to read with simpler story lines, but still have enough pull to keep the youngster enthralled.

This is the first book in the series which also includes Charlie Bone and the Time Twister, Charlie Bone and the Castle of Mirrors, and Charlie Bone and the Invisible Boy.

Book Description

Congratulations, you're a new mommy!

You've brought your brand-new bundle of joy home, and there's so much to look forward to: photos; baby's first word; clipping those oh-so-cute and very tiny fingernails; finding just the right stroller; sex again (gulp!); and, oh yes, losing the weight.

The joys of being a new mommy or daddy are endless, but so are the worries and the advice. Jenny McCarthy, the New York Times bestselling author of Belly Laughs, told you the truth about pregnancy and childbirth. Now she's telling the truth about baby's first year.

With hilarious musings on desperately trying to recall lullabies, losing the weight, baby- proofing the house, encountering mommies with superbabies, postpartum depression, dueling grandmas, and still trying to lose the weight, Baby Laughs is the perfect companion for anyone trying to raise the next president, those just trying to get to the next naptime, and anyone who was ever in diapers.

Book Description

“Take your yarn for a walk,” says author Jenny Dowde, who teaches the freeform “scrumbling” technique. With scrumbling, needleworkers can work unbound by patterns and yet still successfully knit or crochet a project. With just a range of simple stitches and only a few basic techniques, anyone can create lovely and useful household objects and eye-catching wearable art. Full-color photographs illustrate Dowde’s methods in action, from completing both basic and advanced stitches to working with wires and beads, along with a host of special techniques, including constructing buttons, unusual closures, and special accents from polymer clay.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars fun, fun, fun.......2007-05-08

Great book full of ideas to create fabrics out of leftover yarns. Pictures and instructions are beautiful. Lots of inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars Freeform Knitting and Crochet.......2007-02-20

This book is great! You do not need any other book to teach you this technique. If you can only do knit, purl & simple single crochet or you are an experienced "stitcher", this book will allow your "free spirit" to emerge.
The book covers everything from color spectrums to endless possibilities for using your finished art form pieces. Nothing you do is a mistake and I love the freedom of creating my own "yarn sculpture".

4 out of 5 stars great for beginners, just wish there was a little more.......2006-01-28

I bought this book without looking inside, and while I really like the technical information in the book, I have a little bit of a hesitation about recommending it wholeheartedly. I think for an absolute beginner, this would be a fabulous book. It goes over everything from color design to translating that to garments. There's a short tutorial on stitches, and a gallery of basic patterns that you can customize.

For someone who's already had a fair bit of color theory, and who may just need more of the nuts-and-bolts type "here's some more stuff you can do", I think that section could have been expanded quite a bit. Overall, I'm very pleased with the book, I just wish there was more component piecing information/stitches to use. I would DEFINITELY recommend it to anyone just getting into this type of thing, however, and consider its purchase money well spent.

5 out of 5 stars VERY COOL book for anyone who knits or crochets!.......2006-01-14

I was a little skeptical about how good this book would be, but boy was I pleasantly surprised! As someone who is more of a "left-brained" knitter and crocheter, I didn't know if I would ever want to do any of the projects in this book. However, even a left-brainer such as myself can get creative with the patterns and ideas in this book. Just like "Hip to Crochet," this is a book that inspires me to pick up my often-ignored crochet hook, in addition to my well-used knitting needles. I like this book so much that I just bought one for my sister who is even more left-brained than I am!

5 out of 5 stars Great book to get started with freeform crochet.......2004-12-08

I read through most of this book the day I got it because it was that good. There is a section on color theory that helps you choose your yarns, and there are clear instructions on how to put together your "scrumbles" - which are the building blocks for freeform crochet. It is more step-by-step than other books on freeform, which is good for those who need it. The pictures are beautiful and inspiring, too. I'm a long-time crocheter, but I'm new to freeform. This book inspired me to work on my first freeform project - a vest. Crocheters with a desire for more creative expression will love this book!

Book Description

Jenny McCarthy, New York Times bestselling author of Baby Laughs and Belly Laughs, speaks candidly about the challenges and the humor to be found in balancing motherhood and the ups and downs of marriage.

Jenny McCarthy's honesty has made her a bestseller. In Life Laughs, Jenny opens up about all of the things no one told you before you got married and had kids. Of course there's plenty of Jenny's outrageous humor, but she also writes openly and for the first time about doing your best when marriage falters and about her own divorce, which made headlines when it was announced in the summer of 2005. Jenny doesn't pretend to be an expert in her books; she is instead something more valuable—a good girlfriend. Catch Jenny's take on growing older, finances, PMS, sex, dating . . . and again, mommyhood.

Jenny McCarthy is a trusted, brand-name, bestselling author, and Life Laughs is poised to be her biggest book yet.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good laughs.......2007-09-27

I bought this as a funny read for my wife, but then wound up reading it before her. Jenny is really funny as she describes everyday nuiances of life. A bit on the bawdy side, but will make you laugh out loud. Funny to see a chick that is so hot, be so down to earth about things in life we have all thought and wondered about. I recommend it for wives and husbands - thanks Jenny!

4 out of 5 stars Raw and real, that's Jenny (well yes, motherhood is like that too).......2007-09-11

This is a very light read, so light I felt like I just drank some of Wonka's lemony fizzy-lifting drink. But, reading it is wicked fun! What is it about having a baby, that suddenly gives everyone and their brother the right to bombard you with unnecessary advice? What is it about motherhood that makes us feel oh-so-guilty 24/7? This book will certainly help mothers lighten up (and believe me, we all need it). Jenny tells it like it is, and she's quite frank as well as absolutely hysterical! I felt like I was overhearing a juicy conversation with her closest girlfriends - she just says things that no one has the guts to say - and I admire her for that. I hate to say it, but it's great to see a beautiful star so humbled by her inept attempts at parenting. Just make sure you have a sense of humor and an open mind before reading this one, and you'll enjoy it so much more.

4 out of 5 stars third time's the charm.......2007-09-06

I have enjoyed Jenny's first 2 books while I was pregnant and shortly after my son was born. This 3rd book is just as funny and true to life as the other 2. I look forward to the next one she writes, maybe the comic romance?....

5 out of 5 stars wife loved it........2007-08-06

My wife really loved it. I got it for a good read on our summer vacation. It sure helped pass the time on a plane and waiting in the airport. At least it helped me pass the time. She was busy reading so she didn't feel the need to talk to me constantly. Thus I had time to read my book and catch a movie on my dvd player. thanks..

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-08-02

I thought this book was great! we recently found out that my sister is pregnant and we sat down and read belly laughs together in a couple of hours, we loved and appreciated how candid she is. I have read baby laughs and life laughs within a week of reading belly laughs. I agree that the books cover random subjects, but life is random and I can relate to and appreciate everything she talks so openly about. So far, I can safely say that I will read whatever she wants to write about. She makes you feel more normal, and proud to be a woman despite all of the obstacles we may have to overcome

When Gwyn discovers that the prince's dark soul has escaped from the horse and is seeking revenge Gwyn, Emlyn, and Nia have to figure out how to save the mysterious soldier who claims to be Nia's distant cousin. With the help of the Snow Spider, can they recapture the prince's soul without hurting the Chestnut soldier?

Nimmo's fast-paced page turner fantasies appeal to boys and girls with its magical adventures.

4 out of 5 stars This book is best of the Magician Trilogy!.......2007-08-24

I rated this book a 4 because sometimes it exciting but i didn't get a big thrill like "oh my gosh that was so awesome!" I just kept reading and and usually the ending in the rest of the Magician Trilogy books, it just ends with a BAM!If you haven't read the rest of the Magician Trilogy read it!The Magician Trilogy are just like Jenny Nimmo's other series of books Charlie Bone! There big just a bit, but very exciting! If you would compare these books to Harry Potter books Harry Potter books would be better (no offense to Jenny Nimmo!).

5 out of 5 stars The Magician Trilogy.......2007-07-13

This review is for all three books in Jenny Nimmo's Magician Trilogy (The Snow Spider, Emlyn's Moon, and The Chestnut Soldier).

Jenny Nimmo's writing style is very powerful, and her characters come to life as you read these books. The descriptions of locations (people's houses, the Welsh countryside, the town, the school) are so vivid that you can immediately picture yourself there. These books have a few scary parts, but the endings are very positive and satisfying.

These books are recommended for anyone who enjoys fantasy or Welsh mythology. Similar books include Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising Sequence and Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles.

3 out of 5 stars Too much Welsh.......2007-06-15

I'm an adult, and I found this book difficult to understand. There was too much Welsh, the names are difficult to pronounce and the tales are too convoluted to follow. Stick with Charlie Bones.

5 out of 5 stars Gwyn's own family is affected and the entire town is in danger.......2007-06-10

Book three in the Magician Trilogy continues the saga of magician Gwyn, who faces further challenges to his magical powers when a wicked spirit escapes from a broken toy horse and unleashes havoc on his world. Gwyn's own family is affected and the entire town is in danger: can he summon the forces to fight a final battle? This concludes a trilogy begun in THE SNOW SPIDER; prior familiarity with the other hard-hitting fantasy stories will enhance appreciation of this concluding adventure for advanced elementary to early middle school grades.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful Read! .......2007-06-10

A Satisfying conclusion to a delightful series! This is the final book in the Magician Trilogy (The Snow Spider, Emlyn's Moon, & The Chestnut Soldier). When we first met Gwyn he'd just turned 9 and as this book concludes, he is turning 14...the books (themes and story lines) have evolved and matured just as the characters and as such, we find that The Chestnut Soldier has more mature subject matter than the previous two, however all three deal with subtle magic, human frailty, and no small amount of tragedy all thoroughly filtered through the lens of Welsh mythology/folklore. As with the previous books, the usual gang is all present, though Nia and Gwyn are most prominent here. As with the second book, the story is about Gwyn and his gift, but he really plays an almost peripheral role and here Nia and her mysterious soldier cousin Evan take center stage for most of the story.

In this final book, the final of the "five gifts" (the mutilated chestnut horse) his grandmother gave him at age 9 (the first book) finally comes into play. Here we find a soldier wounded badly coming "home" to the only family he has left in the area (the rest of his family having moved to Australia years before). At first things seem relatively normal with him, but as time goes on he becomes more and more angry, like anger is consuming him and his once supportive and worried cousins become frightened of him. Gwyn wants to help, but he's got issues he's dealing with too...he hasn't grown in nearly two years and is felling left behind in many ways. What once seemed a boon now feels like a curse to him. He wishes that he could be normal, that he hadn't inherited his ancestral "gift." Will Gwyn come to terms with all of this and be able to help Nia and Evan before the evil that escapes from the mangled chestnut horse takes over his troubled soul? With Gwyn struggling to find his right place and truly come to terms with who he is and Nia desperately trying to assert her identity and worth in the family when they are thrown into chaos as Evan becomes increasingly disturbed by the "injury" that befell him. Readers will feel the turmoil, angst, and edgy excitement as the story progresses and will certainly enjoy seeing how it all comes together in the end.

Overall I give The Chestnut Soldier four stars. It's got strong magical themes, Welsh mythology/folklore, an evil force trying to break into "our" world, an unwilling hero, a damsel in distress who manages to be a hero in her own way and as is the case with all three books, family is all important here. They are not shown as perfect things...each family here is full of flawed people all trying to work out who they are and striving to enjoy life for themselves and as a part of the larger family unit. What shines most of all here is that no matter how flawed they are, family is where the heart is and they are always there for one another in the end. I also like that the magic here isn't typical of the genre, it's not flashy or "in your face." In the Magician's Trilogy is it's more unknowable and mysterious, allowing the real focus to remain on the individual struggles, quests to find oneself, and most especially on familial relationships. Since it is common in this type of book for the family to be absent or so un-nurturing and unsupportive (as to be abusive in many cases), which serves to allow the child to enter in to the self-explorative adventure, I really enjoy the refreshing presence of a loving and supportive family by all the characters in the story...sure they've got issues, but at the heart of it all, the family IS an integral part of the storyline. We're sad to see the story come to a close...but it's a satisfying end!

Book Description

At thirty-two, Jenny Saville has had a career most artists twice her age would envy. In 1992, the year she completed her studies at Glasgow School of Art, her graduation exhibition sold out. Most notably, one painting was bought by Charles Saatchi and, since then, her international reputation has grown at a rapid and steady pace.Jenny Saville is described as a "New Old Master" for the technical proficiency of her oversize nudes that have earned her comparisons to Rubens and Lucian Freud and universal praise from critics and art historians alike. For the conceptual underpinnings of her work, she has been hailed as one of the most interesting artists of the last decade. Her work has been shown alongside that of Damien Hirst and the other Young British Artists in the acclaimed and seminal survey of new British art Sensation at the Royal Academy (London, 1997) and the Brooklyn Museum of Art (New York, 2000).This is the only monograph devoted to the critically acclaimed young artist and features all of Jenny Saville's paintings to date-including many previously unpublished. This volume is being published in association with the Gagosian Gallery in London. The power of her brilliant and relentless embodiment of our worst anxieties about our own corporeality and gender is what distinguishes Saville from other paint-obsessed representers of the naked human body. To my eye, no other artist in recent memory has combined empathy and distance with such visual and emotional impact. -Linda Nochlin, Art in America, March 2000

5 out of 5 stars Very Nice Book.......2007-09-06

This book is top-notch. The reproductions are very well done, and there are tons of close-up shots of individual paintings showing Saville's brush work. I would highly recommend this to anyone with an interest in contemporary art, portraiture, or figure painting. As a painting student, it is great to be able to see the whole painting on one page and then examine a series of close-ups and even shots of the artist's reference materials. Very informative. Oh, and the paintings are stunningly beautiful as well!!!

I THINK THAT THIS IS REALLY LIFELIKE AND I LIKE THE WAY THAT SHE USES SLIGHTLY BIGGER WOMEN IN HER PAINTINGS BEACAUSE TODAYS MEDIA LOOKS LIKE WE LIVE IN A WORLD OF PERFECT, SKINNY, SIZE 2 MODELS AND THAT DOESNT REFLECT THE GENERAL WEIGHT/MASS OF PEOPLE

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Grotesque.......2007-02-20

All other considerations aside, Jenny Saville can paint, and this book proves it, close up and pouring across the pages. Truly a "painter's painter," Saville uses heightened color discovered, apparently, through manipulating photographs in Photoshop, then painting the results. However she arrives at it, her paint is gorgeous, the colors luscious and compelling. Without a doubt Saville blows away the competition in contemporary figurative realism. For my money, Lucien Freud has nothing on this young female painter. On the other hand, anyone thinking of buying the book should realize that many of the figures are grotesque, raw, actually painful to look at. Art historian Linda Nochlin calls them "hugely disturbing," and I have to agree. It is, in fact, the virtuosity of the paint that delivers such a visceral gut punch when applied to the subject matter, which ranges from obesity plus plastic surgery to men with large [..] plus male genitalia, all displayed in gargantuan proportions right in your face.
The articles accompanying this monograph are excellent as well -- and not nearly disturbing as the images.

Charlie Bone has discovered an unusual gift-he can hear people in photographs talking! His scheming aunts decide to send him to Bloor Academy, a school for genius's where he uses his gifts to discover the truth despite all the dangers that lie ahead.

4 out of 5 stars Bookmom's Review - Midnight for Charlie Bone.......2007-10-05

[Fun: 4/5] [Learning: 3/5] [Suitable: 5/5]

I was pleasantly surprised by what I thought to be a Harry Potter knock-off. Though the Charlie Bone books certainly do tend to follow in the footsteps of the world-famous predecessor, Nimmo gives her own take on the "magic school" story. In Charlie Bone, students have specific magical talents, rather than everyone having the whole range; for example, Charlie's talent is to hear voices from pictures. As Charlie is shipped off to a magical academy he has no desire to attend, he discovers secrets and works to unravel a mystery. Though a work that definitely plays off of Harry Potter fame, Nimmo actually creates a book that is fun to read and, in some respects, cleaner and less dark than the Harry Potter series.

Audience:
* Middle Readers (Grades 4-7)

Positive Themes:
* Loyalty to family and friends
* Using ingenuity to do what's right

Objectionable Content:
* Use of magic
* Some dark and possibly frightening characters

My Recommendations:
* Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling, Matilda by Roald Dahl

5 out of 5 stars Charlie Bone Audio Tapes.......2007-09-23

My kids enjoyed these tapes. They also came right away which was an added bonus.

2 out of 5 stars An ok read with several flaws .......2007-08-13

As has already been mentioned in previous reviews, the similarities to the Harry Potter series are obvious, but Nimmo does not quite deliver.
The plot seems hard to follow in places and characters are at times introduced rather suddenly, deus ex machina fashion.
Still, I suspect children will be happy to read this - it is not a bad book by all means.
One thing made me quite unhappy, however and it is the reason why I gave the book only 2 stars: There is a marked absence of important, positive female characters.

Male characters:
hero - male
hero's best friend - male
first new friend at school (Fidelio) - male
group of children who save Charlie in the end (3) - male
boy who turns bad (Billy) - male
villain - male
villain's helper 1 - male
headmaster - male
helpful uncle - male
other children mentioned - mostly male
mysterious helpful stranger - male
three cats - presumably male
teachers - predominantly male

female characters:
second friend at school (Olivia) - female
girl who has to be woken (Emma Tolly) - female
her aunt (shopkeeper) - female
three evil aunts - female
evil grandma - female
mother - female
villain's helper 2 (Zelda) - female

Apart from Emma Tolly, who does not play much of a role until the end and Olivia, who plays a larger role then some of the children, but not as big as most of the boys, there are positive female characters in the book. There are a few positive adults (mother, grandmother, shopkeeper), but again these are outweighed by the males and balanced by a rather large amount of unpleasant female characters. In the final battle there are no girls involved.

All in all this is a book for boys, it seems - instead of a book for all children. Since it is a not unpleasing book it is to be hoped that the author will introduce more positive female characters in the future.

Another small caveat: The plot with Charlie's father is rather too obvious, even for kids. On the other hand, things get mentioned (such as Billy's past), but not followed up on. The author should take a leaf out of Rowling's book and use better foreshadowing techniques. Nimmo's are either too obvious or plain confusing.

3 out of 5 stars Good read...if not a little confusing........2007-07-10

For readers of Harry Potter you will enjoy Charlie Bone. Admittedly he does not have the same likeably qualities we have known Harry Potter for, but him and his family have the quirky quality that is somewhat lacking in other books.

In the book, Charlie Bone's grandmother and her sisters are insisting that he attend a boarding school on the other side of town because of his gift of hearing pictures talk. The school he attends is dark and foreboding, also holding a mystery that does not become clear to the reader in this single volume.

For older readers Charlie Bone will disapoint, but younger readers will delight in the new magic and mystery Charlie Bone offers them.

All and all, it was a fast read that kept me up at night...but only for one night. The reading is easy and though good, very geared towards children. I have a feeling character development will come along more in the next few volumes and some of the mystery that came along with this book will become clear in the next of the series.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent start to an intriguing new series.......2007-06-22

While ten-year-old Charlie Bone has always had plenty of food to eat, a roof over his head, and clothes on his back, his life has not necessarily been easy. His father died when he was a mere two-years-old, and, seeing that there was not enough money to pay the bills, his beloved mother and her mother, Grandmother Jones - Maisie - were forced to take a handout from the peculiar relatives of his father, in the form of the wickedly vicious Grandma Bone - aka Grizelda - and her equally putrid relatives known as the Yewbeam aunts. Charlie has never understood why Grandma Bone took his family off the street, seeing how much she seem to despise the Jones family; but he manages to put the unpleasantness out of his mind, and concentrate on having a good time with his across-the-road friend Benjamin Brown, and his rambunctious dog, Runner Bean. Everything is going fine, aside from some family fights and demands, until the day Charlie realizes that he can hear the thoughts, as well as bits and pieces of their conversations, of people in photographs. Charlie is baffled by this new revelation, and can't seem to put his finger on how the "superpower" managed to develop seemingly overnight. Convinced that Grandma Bone, along with the Yewbeam aunts, will try to use him for their own pawn, Charlie does his best to conceal his slightfly offbeat...talent. However, Grandma Bone, while old and creaky, has extremely heightened senses. And before he can deny it, both she and the Yewbeam aunts have learned of Charlie's powers, and enrolled him in Bloor's Academy, a place for gifted children. Charlie couldn't be more angry about his new enrollment. Not only will he be unable to accompany Benjamin to school each day, but he'll also be forced to learn quite a bit about music in quite a short time, having been enrolled in the music portion of the program. After Charlie meets Fidelio Gunn, a fellow Bloor's student of his age who happens to be a whiz with musical instruments, he begins to feel much more comfortable regarding his looming situation. That comfort manages to evade him, however, once he steps foot on Bloor's Academy soil. For one, the food is atrocious, and Charlie finds himself falling asleep hungry each and every night; and two, Charlie discovers that he won't be taking the bus home from school each day. Instead, he's forced to remain at Bloor's until Friday afternoon each and every week, and return to the place of drudgery in time for classes Monday morning. And, to make matters worse, Charlie has managed to make it onto school prefect - and Bloor's Academy heir - Manfred Bloor's bad side, and must spend every waking hour at Bloor's avoiding Manfred's gaze, otherwise he may find himself hypnotized. But not everything at Bloor's is bad news. Aside from Fidelio, Charlie has also made nice with an eleven-year-old drama student, Olivia Vertigo, and an albino boy called Billy Raven. But, the longer Charlie finds himself residing at Bloor's, the more he realizes that he's not the only extraordinarily gifted at Bloor's. In fact, many of his classmates have interesting talents of their own, and one, in particular is harboring a mysterious past that Charlie feels he must get to the bottom of. Now, with the help of his newfound friends, he begins snooping about to uncover the truth. But when secrets begin to surface, Charlie must figure out who the traitor is, and save himself from an untimely expulsion from Bloor's. Otherwise, he may never make it back to his true home, or his family, again.

In the same fashion as J.K. Rowling's HARRY POTTER, Jenny Nimmo has woven a compelling story that places Charlie Bone on the defense in almost every single situation he encounters. Like Harry, Charlie is constantly the victim, and must forge ahead, attempting to stay on everyone's good side, and survive the daily trials and tribulations of everyday life, simply to keep his head above water. Luckily, Nimmo, manages to assist him in doing just that. Charlie Bone is certainly one of the most enjoyable characters in today's children's fiction. His wacky family, and the kindness he extends to just about anyone he meets make him quite appealing; and, as I mentioned before, the fact that he is constantly a victim to the evil-doings of those surrounding him, make him quite simple to sympathize with. While not everyone at Bloor's Academy has "super" powers, there are a few who harbor interesting gifts - hypnosis, mental telepathy, strange feelings. These gifts are quite unique, and make for an interesting addition to the tale. However, it is also Charlie's friends that add a delightful dimension to the story, as well. Olivia Vertigo is a character you can't help but love. Olivia manages to steal every scene she appears in. Her penchant for impractical, towering high-heeled shoes is humorous; while her dramatic nature involving dying her hair all sorts of wacky colors and shades, and managing to get into odd sorts of mishaps makes her a memorable, lovable character. And, of course, provides quite a bit of dramatics to the mix. Fidelio Gunn, on the other hand, is also quite enjoyable. His large, boisterous family is irresistible; and the fact that his father loves to sing just about anything - including sentences and announcements - makes for quite a good time. I think that Nimmo's inclusion of the orphan, Billy Raven, was an interesting choice, and quite well-thought out. In today's society, it seems that not many people understand how albino's are viewed, and how society treats them. Nimmo, however, took this condition, and made it a large part of Billy's character; illustrating the trials and tribulations he must face on a daily basis simply because of the way he looks. This bit of information truly makes the reader sympathize with Billy's character, and provides a slight explanation regarding his apprehension in various situations. I can't forget Manfred Bloor, either, whose midnight black eyes, and rough and tumble personality frighten even the reader. With MIDNIGHT FOR CHARLIE BONE, Jenny Nimmo has penned a tale that is impossible to put down. An excellent start to an intriguing new series.
