Book Description
In the tradition of The Perfect Storm and Flags of Our Fathers, Halsey’s Typhoon chronicles the epic tale of men clashing against the ruthless forces of war and nature. In December 1944, America’s most popular and colorful naval hero, Admiral William “Bull” Halsey, unwittingly sailed his undefeated Pacific Fleet into the teeth of the most powerful storm on earth. Three destroyers were capsized sending hundreds of sailors and officers into the raging, shark infested waters. Over the next sixty hours, small bands of survivors fought seventy-foot waves, exhaustion, and dehydration to await rescue at the hands of the courageous Lt. Com. Henry Lee Plage, who, defying orders, sailed his tiny destroyer escort USS Tabberer through 150 mph winds to reach the lost men. Thanks to documents that have been declassified after sixty years and dozens of first-hand accounts from survivors—including former President Gerald Ford—one of the greatest World War II stories, and a riveting tale of survival at sea, can finally be told.

Halsey's Typhoon.......2007-09-30
Outstanding!! Best WW2 historial book I have ever read. Wonderful background info on key issues and people
"Sea Cobra" wins.......2007-08-21
"Halsey's Typhoon": earned one star for the awesome photos of future Prsident Gerald Ford skying for the basketball on the basketball court and
Commander Henry Lee Plage of the USS Tabberer looking three times cooler than Fonzie and John Wayne put together. He proved in action to be three times the hero that he looked.
"Halsey's Typhoon": earned three negative stars for a boring start, middle and end as well as talking down to the reader (constantly using words that had to be looked up and when I looked them up the results were staggering. The words were constantly listed as slang, archaic, obsolete and the meaning didn't even fit the sentence!!!)
"Sea Cobra" by Buckner F. Melton Jr.: covers the same event and earned 4.5 stars. It was extremely user friendly and made the story come to life. You felt like you were with the sailors fighting Typhoon Cobra and Typhoon Viper and Commander's Plage's decision to ignore Halsey's orders and amazingly rescue drowning sailors.
"Sea Cobra": earned .5 negative stars due to lesser photos.
Tragedy and Human Response.......2007-08-17
This is a great book recounting the story of the typhoon in December of 1944 that swept through the Phillipine Sea and sunk three American destroyers costing over the lives of over 700 sailors. The author is very good and not only describing these events, but laying out much of the background that lead to them.
Its important to never forget the old adage that "hindsight is 20/20" in assigning responsibility to other people for their response or lack of response to the events around them. This book provides much food for thought about not only Halsey's Typhoon of 1944, but it can also furnish us guidance about responding to contemporary tragedies. In that sense, its more than just an old World War II story.
Acts of God like hurricanes and typhoons may be beyond our control. However, emergency planning and response may make all the difference in the world. Those who read this book will be struck by the actions of Lieutenant Commander Henry Plage who commanded another destroyer at the time, the U.S.S. Tabor. He was quick to respond to the catastrophe and using skills of superior seamanship rescued dozens of drowning sailors from the ocean. Plage couldn't have done it without a well trained crew and understanding the fine art of sailing in seas with waves and swells as high as 100 feet.
Another example of response to this catastrophe took place on board an aircraft carrier, the U.S.S Monterrey. This ship had caught fire after airplanes were flung about their hangars and ruptured gasoline tanks started an inferno. The situation became so bad, an order was given to abandon ship. The crew decided though that they could save the Monterrey and they proceeded to do so by fighting the fire in a very thought out manner. The Monterrey was saved by its dedicated and competent crew.
Old ships that were top heavy capsized in the hurricane. New ships that were designed to ride out bad weather survived the storm.
Its a very interesting book that gives us much to think about.
A compelling story marred by errors and style.......2007-08-01
Halsey's Typhoon is a World War II disaster-survival tale about Typhoon Cobra enveloping the U.S. Navy's Third Fleet, commanded by Admiral William F. (Bull) Halsey, in the Philippine Sea in December 1944.
The best part of the book, by far, is the second half. Participants, primarily surviving crew members of the three sunken destroyers or the destroyer escort Tabberer which rescued 60% of the survivors despite its own severe damage, relate their experiences during the storm, floating in the water for 24-48 hours, being rescued and recovering These survivors' and rescuers' tales, related recently to the authors by a handful of remaining veterans, are informative, frightening, fascinating, memorable and inspiring. I'm glad their firsthand experiences, even in part, have been published.
Unfortunately, apart from the survivors' personal narratives, this book's deficiencies are many. The authors seem to have relatively little knowledge of either the Navy or World War II, with misused terms and questionable characterization events being too numerous to itemize. Examples include referring to the flag flown at the bow of a naval vessel as a "battle guideon" (an Army term for what the Navy calls a battle jack); calling a ship's mess deck its mess hall; repeatedly referring USS Monaghan as having "drawn first blood" when it sank a Japanese mini-sub inside Pearl Harbor thirty minutes after the attack started whereas it is widely acknowledged that USS Ward sank a Japanese mini-sub outside the entrance of Pearl Harbor before the aerial attack even commenced; describing MacArthur's invasion of Luzon as a "stepping stone" toward Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Japan itself when it was arguably more of a strategic distraction from Nimitz's Central Pacific island hopping campaign through Guadalcanal, Guam, Saipan, etc. that actually established the air bases from which the U.S. directly struck Japan in 1945 and opened the route to Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
Also, the book needs serious editing to eliminate wordiness, inconsistencies (e.g., ascribing different ranks or titles to the same people within the scope of a few days) and questionable or obscure metaphors. For instance, does it make sense to describe Halsey's belated decision to allow his command to break formation in order for individual captains to concentrate on the safety of their ships to being like "Mrs. O'Leary reporting her cow missing?" The authors' wordiness and commitment of space to irrelevant biographical details or wartime events may have been a way to deal with the fact that a concise rendition of their most original and compelling material would have filled perhaps just half as many pages.
Finally, apart from the sunken destroyers and their principal rescuing vessel, former-President Ford's experiences on the USS Monterey and descriptions of near-disaster on the USS Aylwin, there are few details about what happened to any of the other vessels during the typhoon. Finally, there is nothing whatsoever about how the typhoon affected the war effort. How long did it take before the damaged Third Fleet was again combat ready? What impact did the loss of Third Fleet air cover have on the Army's Mindoro campaign, which was the reason Halsey was so reluctant to release his ships from formation? The world wants to know...
The book's three sections - The Fleet, the Storm and The Rescue - are divided into twenty-five unnamed chapters that total 266 pages. An Epilogue (immediate post-storm events), Afterword 2006 (post-WWII careers of some figures in the narrative), four-page bibliography, an index and miscellaneous addendums bring the page count to 322. Twenty-eight B&W photos illustrate some of the key characters and ships and endpaper charts depict locations relative to the typhoon track. There are no footnotes.
Recommended to naval history and WWII buffs, survival/adventure tale fans or anyone who lost a relative at sea during WWII due to the recounting of individual veterans' experiences. Not recommended to people seeking information about WWII campaigns and strategies or those seeking tightly composed nonfiction prose.
Not An Untold Story.......2007-07-29
This is not an untold story of the war, rather it has been told for years. Morrison has it in his HISTORY OF NAVAL OPERATION IN WORLD WAR II. Halsey's meteorologist wrote a book of almost exactly the same title 40 years ago.
The writing is not very good. It could have used more polishing and another draft, but my guess is that they were rushing to get it to press because another publisher had a book on exactly the same subject (SEA COBRA) coming out, and they wanted to get in first.
No footnotes or attribution. The bibliography is not that extensive. There is only a single map. More would have been very helpful in following the action -- repeatedly i had to try and figure out the navigation to figure out exactly which turn they were talking about. A mpa showing the ship dispossession within the fleet would have been invaluable.
The authors allow their oral history interviewees to settle old scores. Any officer who ever corrected them gets paid back here. Its true -- history gets written by survivors.
Interestingly, another phenomena of the war is described here -- it was common for ships to sail and have maybe 5% of the crew miss movement. "greatest Generation" and all that, but that alos meant the greatest amount of skulker. Unthinkable to have a ship in today's navy depart with that kind of AWOL.

tombo01.......2007-09-06
A great story and a great story-teller! The most user friendly book I've read. There was no over blown technical term or military acronym that I couldn't understand. You didn't have to have 20 years service time in the Navy to know what was happining to the sailors and what the command leadership was doing right or wrong. You felt you right there with the sailors in their battle to survive! An amazing story of heroes and tragedy. The story of Commander Henry Lee Plage of the destroyer USS Tabber is awesome! He stands 3 times taller than John Wayne ever did! He was a 29 year old reservist with only one and a half years of sea time. He amazingly avoided direct orders and rescued over 50 sailors inside the fury of a killer typhoon (almost a thousand sailors died and many ships were sunk or nearly sunk). The other current book on this event "Halsey's Typhoon" doesn't even come close to the passion or power of "Sea Cobra".
stirring and insightful.......2007-06-10
My father served on an aircraft carrier that survived the typhoon Cobra, and I found this book to be a thorough and compelling account of one of the most disastrous events of WW2.
a good review of the storm.......2007-06-08
excellent account of the storm and dealt with the review of navy top brass. Let you draw your own idea at who was at fault for the lost of three ships and about eight hundred sailors. The navy felt that no one person was to blame. Just a series of unfortunate events. Yeah right!
Sea Cobra.......2007-03-15
I haven't finished this one. It is very good as far as I have read.

Thriling book, can't wait for the last volume.......2007-10-05
My kids loved the two books in the series, they hardly wait for the final volume.
Fantastic.......2007-05-09
My 11-year-old son reads everything he can get his hands on. When I asked him how he liked this book, he thought about it, and finally said,"I would have to say it's the best book I've ever read." 'Nuff said!
Excellent, takes me back to my Youth.......2007-02-09
Having grown up with Edgar Rice Burroughs - this is exacty the sort of high adevnture I loved. These are more sophisticated techically (no need for starnge powers etc). I thoroughly enjoyed the first book and am not disappointed with the second. The presentation ks is superb, with excellent facsimile documents and photographs, made to look like a real journal, beautiful fold out maps and schematics of Ships, and submarines, captivate. The story is fast paced and has and authenticity to it. A real Indiana Jones meets the league of extraordinary gentlemen. Enough to stimulate the imagination of any reader adult or child. t
You Figure it Out.......2007-01-26
The ship was tossed and turned as the typhoon ripped through the South China seas. This is just a little of all the action, adventure, and mystery that happens in this book. Operation Typhoon Shore has great action, but the mystery is even better. For me the mystery is what hooked me, and kept my mind focused on the book. The book left me hanging at the end of each chapter motivating me to read more. Joshua Mowll sets the book up so I found clues in the text, and uncovered a little part of the mystery at a time. When I was reading the book it made me feel like a detective, so it felt like I was in the story.
Another reason I liked this book was because of the lively characters. The author gives each character a vivid description. At some parts during the book I felt like the characters were with me. Also, each character had a purpose, so they weren't just in the story because the author wanted them in it. Instead each character is used for a specific piece of the story that without it the reader would be lost. Finally, the mystery and characters is what kept me reading.
Waiting for Number 3.......2007-01-14
I can't wait for the next addition to this series. For the reluctant reader they will not be able to put this down.

first person account.......2007-06-08
the author lived through the storm and his first person account kept me on the edge of my seat. I feel that I was on board the pitching ship with him. Excellent from the first page til the last.
A Story of Many Lessons.......2006-06-13
This book is facinating for many reasons: a great read for people involved in making rapid responses to changing situations; It's also a study in the workings of structured staff organizations; and then, it's a wonderful piece of first person reporting of incredible circumstances.
The author describes his discomfort with his ship's handling after the new anti-aircraft guns were put on. He took the time to report it up the chain of command. In this part, he discusses many issues of ship stability and engineering, as well as the response he got from BUSHIPS.
The time leading up to the storm disccses the observations of many of the "small boy" captains, and how they used time honored methods, to determine the location of the typhoon, but thought Halsey's "professional weather guessers" certainly knew something they didn't. This part is a study in the workings of large staffs and how those within them react/don't react.
The personal story of hanging on a stanchion, facing the Commodore, while his ship rolled almost 90 degrees, and the discussion of what water gets into, that you thought was designed to be safe from intrusion, is riveting.
The aftermath of the sinkings and the thorough discussion of the court of inquiry, with excerpts from the suvivors of the sunken ships, is another entire section well written.
Highly recommended for the professional sailor, marine architects, staff officers, and those who wonder what it is like to be at sea, at night in a large storm.
Excellent.......1999-04-16
This is a personal narrative of a destroyer commander who was caught in the Dec.1944 typhoon in the pacific. This typhoon swamped three destroyers: The Hull, The Spence and the Monahan. His destroyer almost turned turtle also.About 700men were lost from the three ships that sunk.

Horrible Is Excellent.......2007-07-04
Typhoon Lover did exactly what I was hoping it wouldn't do and that made it a wonderful read, even if I felt anxious the whole time for the heroine. Her own sorry actions plus the problems thrown her way made it one of the best in the series. The future is uncertain, but interesting for Rei and I'm looking forward to reading Girl in a Box. Rei is one of the best characters I've come across in reading. She's so real. She makes mistakes, she has bad judgment, brilliant insights and a propensity to get in deeper than perhaps she should, but always landing on her feet...sort of.
The Typhoon Lover.......2007-01-05
While not the best of the best, this mystery is well written, and as usual, filled with wonderful details about Japanese life. I would recommend it, with the caution that reading the previous books in the series makes it more interesting as Rei's relationships move forward in this book.
Novel filled with all the right elements.......2006-08-07
I loved it! Sujata Massey is my new favorite author! I read this book from cover to cover in one afternoon. There is a possible murder-suicide, a love story, scandals, and intrigue. It reads like a spy story.
I skipped over the sex scenes; they were really unnecessary and didn't add to the story. My dad read this book, and decided that it is written for the younger generation. I think that explains the one and only rotten review for this book.
Not as good as the others.......2006-07-28
I really enjoy reading Sujata Massey's books. I think Rei Shimura's adventures are a thrill and I usually can't put the book down untill I'm finished with it. But this time has been diferent, I don't know why but it's been a little boring and maybe too short, I have the feeling that nothing happened and at the end Rei ends up alone for no reason.
I hope the next one is better, although I know that having the pressure of writing so many books and wanting them to be as good as the others has to be difficult to bear with, so I just want to encourage Sujata to keep writing Rei's adventures.
Liked but didn't love this latest in the Rei Shimura series..........2006-05-15
As always, Massey does a wonderful job of weaving in cultural details to her mystery story and when I finished Typhoon Lover I found myself eager to read the next book in the series because I love Massey's writing style and the world she shares through this series and didn't want my time in Rei's world to be over. That said, I didn't like the development of Rei and Hugh in this book--among other things, Rei is supposed to be 30 years old and her interpersonal instincts with Hugh can be so incredibly lacking, especially for a woman astute enough to navigate international sleuthing and the nuances of a second culture; moreover, she is often so insightful and astute in reading people. But so it goes. Still, Massey's novels are rich reads and this book had me riveted, albeit frustrated at times.

Four classic stories of the sea by Joseph Conrad: “Typhoon,” “Amy Foster,” “Falk,” and “Tomorrow”
These powerful stories, as Conrad critic Paul Kirschner has observed, present “a chiaroscuro of sea and land life in an alternating rhythm of hope and despair.” In “Typhoon,” a storm upends a captain’s complacency, hurling him and his crew into a terrifying battle with nature. “Amy Foster” tells the story of an Eastern European immigrant shipwrecked off the coast of England, and his ultimately doomed love affair with the dim-witted Amy Foster. In “Falk,” the protagonist harbors a terrible secret that inhibits his ability to confront the woman he loves and find the wife he longs for. And in “Tomorrow,” the son of a retired sea captain, who has been waiting years for his boy to come home, finally returns, but only because he is destitute and needs money.

No, not " The Perfect Storm" -- Better .......2007-03-24
Typhoon and Other Short Stories -By Joseph Conrad *****
"She seemed, indeed, to have been used as a running target for the secondary batteries of a cruiser. A hail of minor shells could not have given her upper works a more broken, torn, and devastated aspect; and she had about her the worn, weary air of ships coming from the far ends of the world - and indeed with truth, for in her short passage she had been very far; sighting, truly, even the coast of the Great Beyond, whence no ship ever returns to give up her crew to the dust of the earth." Typhoon
Conrad is a master of observation. His novels and short stories aren't great narratives and dramas so much as they are depictions of the mind and the human spirit. In Typhoon, to be sure, nothing really happens: a coastal ship with a bizarre captain encounters some "dirty weather knocking about" and barely survives. Except for the ending, it's "The Perfect Storm" without the A-List cast.
The relationship between Mr. Jukes, the first officer, and Captain McWhirr, the distant and preoccupied ship's master, is the story, such as it is. The Captain is infuriatingly obtuse, choosing to trust his own judgment rather than the experience of others:
"Captain McWhirr, took a run and brought himself up by an awning stanchion.
"A Profane man," he said, obstinately. "If this goes on, I'll have to get rid of him first chance." "It's the heat,' said Jukes. "The weather's awful. It would make a saint swear. Even up here I feel exactly as if I had my head tied up in a woolen blanket." Captain McWhirr looked up. "D'ye mean to say, Mr. Jukes, that you ever had your head tied up in a blanket? What was that for?" It's a manner of speaking, sir." Said Jukes,Stolidly.
I cite another paragraph of Conrad's simply for the beauty of his language (which, after all, he didn't learn until he was 20 years old):
"The Nan-Shan was plowing a vanishing furrow upon the circle of the sea that
had the surface and the shimmer of an undulating piece of gray silk. The sun, pale
and without rays, poured down leaden heat in a strangely indecisive light, and the Chinamen were lying prostrate about the decks. Their bloodless, pinched, yellow
faces were like the faces of bilious invalids.
... The smoke struggled with difficulty out of the funnel, and instead of streaming
away spread itself out like an infernal sort of cloud, smelling of sulphur and raining soot all over the decks."
Another reviewer has taken other critics to task for panning Conrad's work. I won't bother: it's enough for me to know that Conrad is ranked among the greatest of writers of English. From his novels (Nostromo, Lord Jim) to short works (Heart of Darkness; The Secret Sharer) he is a universally acknowledged master. -Philip Henry
FIVE STARS *****
essential writing.......2000-06-22
The stories in this book are sea tales in Conrad's tradition of pessimistic, psychological fiction. Typhoon is particularly good, but the other stories are interesting as well. If it seems like Conrad is just writing adventure stories, well, that's just not true. He's writing about the most important themes, and setting them against a backdrop of exciting seafaring and travel.
If a reader finished Heart of Darkness, and enjoyed it, then that reader might want to pick this book up next, and give it a whirl.

A Fantastic Vacation Becomes A Fight For Life
Visiting San Esteban is supposed to be a vacation for Frank and Joe Hardy and their friends, but it doesn't take long for them to realize that the island is no paradise. Some of the local inhabitants aren't very friendly to tourists, and the island itself is crawling with dangerous wild animals -- some of which take up residence in the Hardys' bungalow.
As if this isn't enough to worry about, someone starts dogging the Hardys every step of the way. Is this person responsible for most of the "bad luck" they've had? Not even the worst villain, though, could arrange the typhoon that turns all of San Esteban into a death trap. Can the Hardys solve the mystery of Typhoon Island before they're wiped off the map?

The Hardy Boys On Vacation.......2003-12-26
The Hardy Boys, along with their girlfriends, Callie and Iola, are vacationing in the tiny Caribbean island country of San Esteban. The action starts from Chapter One when their rented plane almost crashes! When they finally arrive at their destination, they are beset by numerous calamities, such as an escaping bull, deadly insects, vandals and a local glad-handing politician! There's plenty of action in this story (every chapter ends in a cliff-hanger) but the mystery itself is ill-defined. Everything finally gets rolling when a fierce tropical storm hits the island and our heroes are pursued by a blow-dart wielding thug into a network of underground passages.

Book Description
The first of a family of single-engine aircraft that would play an important part in the RAF's and Fleet Air Arm's contributions to the Second World War. The Typhoon was designed as a high-speed interceptor fighter and replacement for its forebear, the Hurricane. The Tempest was a development of the Typhoon. It was a more than capable ground-attack aircraft and defense fighter at medium altitudes. The final development of the line was the smaller and even faster Sea Fury, which had evolved from the Fury originally destined for the RAF. This well-researched and readable book tells the full story of these important aircraft.
