Book Description
In an effective writing workshop, young children grow in leaps and bounds, and within just a few months, the changes in their written products can dazzle you. And after 30 years of studying her students' growth in the writing workshop, Lucy Calkins knows one of the most powerful ways to support good writers: clear, purposeful writing conferences.
In One to One Calkins and her colleagues Amanda Hartman and Zoe White show you the practices and principles that create effective conferences. They dispel the myth that master teachers have a magic touch and show you that effective teachers do not reinvent the conference with each student, but rather use predictable, principled interactions that follow a few simple frameworks. In One to One, you will learn:
- repeatable conferring frameworks that are the foundation of effective conferring
- specific teaching methods that you can match to your students' needs
- strategies for tailoring conferences to English language learners
- ways to use conferring across the content areas
- on-the-run record-keeping systems that are efficient, powerful teaching tools.
Good conferring, like good teaching, relies on your ability to communicate effectively with children, and the skills you develop as you learn to confer will improve your teaching abilities in all areas, including developing curriculum, leading strong minilessons, and untangling the classroom chaos that can derail a smoothly running workshop. Read One to One to improve your conferences and your teaching. But most important, read it to improve your students' writing every day.

Really nice book.......2007-07-31
I got this book for my life drawing class and I really like this book. It does not teach anatomy or proportion. It shows the classical way of doing figure drawing and how to do finish rendering. It's more traditional approach and really helpful. I have learned a lot from it.
Good for drawing "live".......2006-07-17
Very usefull, very pleasant to read. I was expecting more explanations about the relationship between anatomy and the human pose, but it's more about how to look at the model to draw it well.
Thank God for an excellent figurative painter!.......2006-03-04
Ryder's book is a delight to leaf through, looking at the excellent life drawings in red earth, done with the same accuracy and passion as the masters of the past.
He gives a very clear account of how to tackle the drawing in phases, until it is finished.
I would have rated the book a solid 5, were it not that in my opinion Ryder spends too little time giving advice on how to measure proportions, which are the basis of a successful life drawing or portrait. He is undoubtedly a masterful draftsman, but the less experienced artist reading his book would expect to be led step by step on such an important aspect of drawing from life.
Excellent, but..........2005-11-05
The general consensus of the reviews I've read is that this is a fine book, but not for beginners. My take is somewhat different.
First of all, I think this is a fine book for a beginner if she or he is not (unlike most beginners it seems) indignant at the idea of having to have exercise patience and concentration.
Anthony Ryder is a fine draftsman and, to judge from this book, a fine teacher as well. He explains his method quite admirably. How others can think otherwise is a mystery to me. As far as I'm concerned, he does an excellent job of combining instruction in mechanical technique with broader insights into the process of drawing. While I have never met him, I find he comes across in this book as quite a likeable person.
I do, however, have a reservation. The author seems to have little understanding of, or at least does not convey, the limitations of the method he teaches.
For accurately conveying the appearance of still subjects in controlled lighting, I think this method is without better.
Many subjects, however, cannot be portrayed accurately using this method. You simply cannot make a good drawing of a living deer or chickadee, for instance, using this framework. Nor can you portray human subjects that are impractical for studio sessions, for instance a battle scene with many people (try paying just one model for 8 hours of posing) and in positions that no model can hold for very long or at all. All the work of A.R. that I have seen is either of inanimate objects or of human models in relatively leisurely poses, and his method reflects that.
Nonetheless, learning to draw accurately from still life is an essential skill for those who want to do realistic work, and this book is an excellent foundation. However, if you want to work with subjects other than lounging models and objects on table tops, you will need to go beyond it.
Figure Drawing.......2005-08-12
Mr. Ryder has compiled wonderful book for the figure drawing beginer that includes many types of drawings and drawing media, from pencil to charcoal to pastels. It is extremely well ilustrated with many great tips for the beginers. This is a book that I highly recomend for those just starting to those are already on their way.

the gift.......2007-07-22
I bought this as a gift for my sister who is a major Star Wars fan and she absolutely loved it. It was in excellent condition when it arrived and t came on time.
Four-Year-Old's Dream.......2007-05-13
My four-year-old boy talks day and night about Star Wars, even though he's never seen the movies. With a few beginning-to-read books, and this great, comprehensive one, he is a true Star Wars geek (in a good way!). We first saw this book at the library, where my son's eyes just about popped out of his head. It's appropriate for any age, from child to adult, because the information is robust but broken down in small parts on each page, making it suitable for reading small chunks to a kid.
A book for hard core fans and anyone new to Star Wars.......2007-05-08
Some books just have an appealing to die hard fans of the Star Wars universe. If you are new, or happen to be a little overwhelmed; then this is for you! Great insight about places, characters, and a very neat time-line and map that illustrates where every planet is located. This is a formidable add to my collection. I liked how it covered events and characters from the expanded universe, since it gives you an idea about n how many events took place before and after episodes I-VI. The hard-cover depicting Lord Vader is second to none. This book is really a "must have".
May The Force be with us, all.
what every fan needs.......2007-05-07
This is a great source to just go over a timeline of the star wars galaxy span over 25,000 years worth of star wars history from the formation of the Republic to formation of the Galactic Alliance and everything inbetween

Butterfly book: "Where Butterflies Grow".......2006-11-04
"Where Butterflies Grow", is a very informative book with many great pictures. I used it with elementary students when I did a unit study on butterflies at the beginning of the school year. It was well received by students and the material was well presented and easy to understand. The pictures were above the average.
My daughter acts this book out as I read it........2004-11-09
This book tells the complete story of the life cycle of a butterfly, beautifully illustrated. My 6 year old loves it. It is a perfect compliment to your life science studies. The descriptions are also beautiful, almost poetic.
Nature learning experience.......2002-12-04
Lynne Cherry's illustration of this book are so realistic they look like photographs. The book has exceptional detail from the flowery meadow to all the creatures living in it. The poetic text and illustrations describe the life cycle of a swallowtail butterfly with great accuracy. A wonderful story for nature lovers.
Where Butterflies Grow.......2000-04-08
My 3 yr old loved hearing about how caterpillars turn into butterflies. He has been caterpillar obsessed and this book helped to explain metamorphasis in the most simplistic terms.
Book Description
Painting in a semi-abstract style is an exciting challenge for artists--but just how do you translate the scene before you into a dynamic composition? Thoroughly practical, with step-by-step demonstrations clearly showing the progression from initial inspiration to a finished work and a comprehensive techniques section concentrating on unusual effects of color and texture, Beyond Realism is the perfect introduction to abstract art.
Customer Reviews:
Helped me a lot........2007-04-07
I ordered this book because I've been stuck trying to do realistic art. I love to look at abstract art and believe this book is helping me make the transition from one to the other. It gives step by step instructions from the original vision to color studies to the finished piece of art.
Great for developing abstract ideas.......2007-03-07
"Beyond Realism" by Brian Ryder combines inspiration and technique, helping artists to move from realistic forms of painting to the more inventive form of abstract art. This is no small step, as this kind of art requires the ability to express intangible ideas in visual form - while still keeping to the basic principles of good art. Ryder's book provides a great start in making this leap.
In the introduction, the author explains that abstract art is the artist's interpretation of reality (as opposed to reflecting it.) He discusses the work of some of his favourite abstract artists, and illustrates the text with accompanying photographs. After displaying a gallery of his own work, Ryder proceeds to give step by step demonstrations on ten different subjects. These demos vary in interpretation and style from an impressionistic landscape, to bold abstracts that develop the interplay of pure form, texture and colour. In other words, it shows there is an infinite variety in abstract art.
What I especially like about this book is that each example is accompanied by photographs taken as if the reader is looking over the artist's shoulder and watching him at work - the next best thing to a video. Ryder demonstrates "adventurous painting techniques" in acrylic and oil mediums, combining both with other mediums to create a range of textures and effects. In the accompanying text, he virtually thinks out loud as he develops the painting, giving his reasons for the choices he is making.
This book is not for the beginner, but it is great for any artist of some experience who wants to know how to "translate" ordinary everyday objects and scenes into an abstract painting. Ryder mentions that he often does a series of paintings on one subject in which he experiments with different treatments of it. If you have previously painted in a more realistic style, following his process can encourage you to be more exploratory in your own work.
To extend the ideas in this book, I particularly recommend "Painting the Spirit of Nature" by Maxine Masterfield as well as "Celebrate your Creative Self" by Mary Todd Beam, both of which show the development of abstract ideas.
An Artist's comments.......2007-01-11
I found this work very much to be on my wavelength. Some illustrations were more traditional than I had hoped but some will provide me with stimulation to be even more abstract in my approach to landscape.
Bits and pieces. Not great, but not bad, either........2006-11-08
There are some interesting techniques illustrated in this step-by-step art manual, but there are frustrating holes in the book's how-to-do-it instruction, too. A lot of pages are devoted to rather stingy content. It seems the world is still waiting for a truly good book on the techniques of making abstract art. Maybe -- just maybe -- it's something that can't be learned from a book. In any case, you'll find a few nuggets of gold among the dross, and that's enough to merit buying this book. If you get a few useful ideas, it's worth the price.
A little Over My Head.......2006-03-10
The basic information in the book is pretty good, but as a beginer it's over my head. Still, it has some pretty interesting stuff and examples. Book deserves 5 stars, I just chose wrong one.
Book Description
The sequel to the highly successful and critically praised book, Bar and Club Design, New Bar and Club Design is an elegant photographic journey through the latest international design trends in the bar and club industries, highlighting bars and clubs completed since 2001.
There has been a resurgence of cocktail culture and an explosion of the "style bar," places that are professionally designed and serve high quality spirits, wine, and cocktails. Such bars have continued to open in cities such as New York, London, and Tokyo, but also in Beirut and Bangkok. Another strong trend in bar and club design, documented here, is a interest in creating lower budget designer bars that are as visually interesting and unusually designed as the big budget productions, such as Andy Wahloo in Paris and Loungelover in London. Likewise, club culture continues to thrive, albeit on a far smaller scale than the superclubs of the 1990s. Nightclubs have grown cozier, late night lounge bars have emerged to cater to the "grown-up clubber," offering comfort and luxury rather than an empty shell in which to dance. The futuristic "superclubs" still being built now offer the very latest in technology and audiovisual entertainment.
This book explores the design zeitgeist of drinking and dancing culture worldwide. Divided by category into bars, restaurant bars, hotel bars, and clubs, each profile includes imaginative photographs, thoughtful descriptions, and architectural plans of the design. The innovative, sleek photographs allow the reader to enter into the ambience of each bar and experience its atmosphere. Sure to be an excellent guide for bar and club owners, architects and designers, as well as a sourcebook for new design inspirations, New Bar and Club Design will be appealing to travelers, night-lifers and design-lovers of every description.
Customer Reviews:
Unique Approach.......2007-08-11
This book is a classy edition to library of any nightclub industry professional and to anyone who enjoys fine design.
A sequel to "Bar and Club Design", a book I have not had the opportunity to view, this second book is reminiscent of the popular photograph books published with works of famous photographers. It is physically weighted, an unusual, square shape with high quality glossy pages. The book is divided by chapters that categorize the types of bars. Starting with bars, the book leads into restaurant bars, hotel bars, and clubs.
It visually captures fifty of the worlds most beautifully designed bars and clubs with detailed text descriptions that tell a story of their own. There are several floor plans that show the uniqueness of each of these clubs, beyond the photograph. Ryder, the books author, is a journalist from London specializing in lifestyle topics and interior design. This explains why each image in the book appears a true work of art.
Visit Coconclub in Moscow, Russia which is described as a "giant termite mound" by the author and as a "four level biomorphic formation like a mountain peppered with caves, suddenly put inside a building with a an eclectic façade" by its architects. The images that follow are an amazing feat of architecture and artwork weaved together.
See how Hajime in Tokyo, Japan has maximized the appearance of a small square footage area using some illumination and shadowing to create the illusion of a much larger space. Or the 2 million dollar color changing XL club in New York. The ideas, creativity and beauty seems endless.
This is a pleasant read and even more pleasant just to thumb through and enjoy the photographic art that it contains. If you own a bar or club, let it inspire you to make changes and differentiate your bar from others. If you just enjoy the nightlife, know that there are fascinating places you can spend your time.

The continuing adventures of Rogue Squadron are well worth a look.......2006-12-05
Star Wars Omnibus: X-wing Rogue Squadron Volume Two compiles several multi-issue arcs of the Dark Horse comic book saga in one handy volume. The premise of the omnibus books is to give Dark Horse a way to present novel-length stories in a single collection and also to provide a home for single issues or short stories that might otherwise be forgotten. The book includes three four-issue story arcs, along with a single issue one-off. The presentation of the omnibus is very attractive and clean, with a lot of content packed between the covers.
The four stories are as follows:
"Rogue Squadron Special" - This story is the one issue tale and it takes place a few weeks after the Battle of Endor. Wedge and the Rogues liberate the planet Tandankin from Imperial oppression, but are dismayed to find the citizens criticizing their methods and the collateral damage caused by the battle. Fortunately, Luke Skywalker is still a member of Rogue Squadron and he steps forward to explain to the mob why exactly Wedge Antilles is such a great guy. It's a fun walkthrough of Wedge's movie highlights and also establishes him as the fearless leader we are to follow in the upcoming comics.
"Battleground: Tatooine" - An Alliance agent is on Tatooine investigating the struggles of local warlords to take control of the planet and their possible Imperial connections. Rogue Squadron is sent to assist her in any way required. This story was terrific: action-packed, lively, varied, and with an interesting mystery at its core. Bib Fortuna makes an intriguing appearance in a drastically altered form (inspired by a short story in the book Tales from Jabba's Palace), and we take an exciting side trip to the Twi'lek homeworld Ryloth.
"Warrior Princess" - Rogue Squadron receives surprising news: one of their pilots, Plourr, is actually a princess on the planet Eiattu! The team sets off to the politically-divided planet to try and help Plourr reclaim her heritage and fix the broken government. This story features a terrifically unsettling panel of Darth Vader playing with toy TIE fighters and X-wings with a psychotic child member of the royal family. The plot overall is solid but fairly predictable.
"Requiem for a Rogue" - A Bothan passenger liner has gone missing and Rogue Squadron sets off to find out. They succeed, but all is not as it seems on the fourth planet of the Malrev system. This story drops an interesting Sith aspect into what are usually more military-focused plotlines with the Rogue Squadron series. The villains are fairly cheesy but the sacrifice required by the pilots at the tale's climax is affecting.
This omnibus provide excellent value and is a nice long read for those of us who don't fancy collecting individual issues of comics. I'm looking forward to reading Volume Three sometime in the near future.

Excellent textbook.......2005-08-14
This book was aimed more to upper management and directors in radio, but still offered a lot for those who are not. Also - the main purpose is toward the talk industry. If you are seeing Top 40 gigs, this book is not for you.
Gellers book helped me most, at this point, by giving me an inside look of what my PD's are looking for, rather than what I think they may be looking for. Definetly useful.
Thank you Ms. Geller.......2001-01-08
As a recent college graduate entering the job market, I have memorized The Powerful Radio Workbook. I could have used this when I was still in school! Thank you Ms. Geller for helping me gain the confidence I need to be a success.

Helpful book on organizing and selling possessions.......2007-02-20
Being an eBay Trading Assistant, I have been called upon to help people deal with evaluating and selling their possessions, whether it is to provide the client with much-needed extra income or just to sift through and reduce an inherited house full of items. This book condenses some of what I do (plus much more) into an easy to understand primer. It offers such advice as when to get an appraisal, how to clean ceramics and most important, where to sell or donate your items. Further, the author defines terms the average person may have heard of but never fully understood such as "provenance" and describes "grading" and the difference between pottery and porcelain. Perhaps the most useful information in this book is where to find information on your items, such as price guides and of course, the Internet. Many websites are provided. The book is written in a chatty conversational style and individual chapters are devoted to Furniture, Jewelry, Books, Coins, etc. I enjoyed the "Antiques Roadhouse" type of stories of discoveries of unknown valuables such as a Patek Philippe watch discovered in a bulk gold purchase. Although this book will help a layman identify different types of furniture, jewelry or glassware, it is meant as a starting reference point to show you where to get more in depth information. I think this book would be especially helpful to eBay sellers who dabble in a lot of different areas.
