Now they are inseparable, swimming, eating, and playing together. Adorable photos e-mailed from friend to friend quickly made them worldwide celebrities. Here is a joyous reminder that in times of trouble, friendship is stronger than the differences that too often pull us apart.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures and a moving story.......2007-10-01

This excellent account of the true story of Owen and Mzee will delight any young reader. The beautiful pictures of the animals and the park are perfectly complemented by the easy-to-read text making this book a wonderful story-time resource. Though young readers may be saddened when Owen loses his mother, his adoption by Mzee will soothe any lingering concerns while teaching a powerful lesson about acceptance. This book would be an inspiring addition to any family library.

5 out of 5 stars I like this book.......2007-09-08

I bought this book for my four year old neice. It is a great story of friendship with the added bonus of being a true story. There are a lot of great photos in the book and my neice really enjoyed talking about the pictures and she added some details to the book just my commenting on what she could see in the pictures. I think this is a good purchase.

Book Description

Aspiring wizards can tune in to the age-old wisdom of Merlin with this dazzling compendium of all things magical — unveiling novelty elements throughout.

For any apprentice determined to learn the arcane arts of wizardry, could there be a better teacher than . . . Merlin himself? Originally discovered in 1588, this remarkable text by history's most respected wizard is revealed to the world for the very first time. Lavishly illustrated by four delicate artists, WIZARDOLOGY's intricate design even conceals a series of hidden symbols that spell out a secret message when their code is deciphered — if the reader is clever enough to find them.

Among WIZARDOLOGY's special features are:

-a glittering crystal ball-like jewel on the front cover
- a world map showing locations of wizards around the globe
- tactile samples of a "fairy flag" with one wish remaining and a phoenix feather to aid in flying charms
- booklets explaining the proper use of spells, familiars, and potions
- a removable dragon pendant allowing the user to dowse for mythical beasts
- a pack of eight removable fortune-tellling cards
- a 48-page mini book of divination on the final spread

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book!.......2007-08-02

These "Ologies" books are great! I even love to look at them. They're crammed full of interesting information and all the little pull out items and 3D trinkets are really cool and engaging. These books keep my kids occupied for good periods of time, and they'll go back and look at them again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book, sure to capture the young imagination.......2007-07-21

If the saying "don't judge a book by its cover" is true for 90% of books out there, then Wizardology falls into the other 10%. Captivating from first sight and not letting up all the way to the end, this book is just right on so many levels. Consider:

1. Its rich graphics are anything but boring. Elaborate designs, drawings, old-style text font, and drawings make every page rich and colorful.
2. Almost every page has something to touch, pull, or feel. This book engages the kinesthetic learner very well.
3. The author clearly knows what kids like. Wizards, dragons, magic, spells--they're all here.
4. Topics for discussion are everywhere. What does it mean to say yes to Magic and no to Science? Can animals communicate with us in ways we can understand? That's just the tip of the iceberg.

The one caution is that this book contains a lot of big words. However, in my experience, children are so engaged by everything else going on that they really don't stumble over them. Even so, I'd recommend this to about the 4th grade and up. Younger kids might get confused and overwhelmed, which would be a loss, because the actual text is arguably Wizardology's strongest attribute. Also, as some have said, I wouldn't worry about this book convincing kids to start casting spells everywhere or actually believing that Science isn't a good thing. The book's style is clearly presented as fiction, and young people quickly pick up on this.

All in all, I highly recommend this book for the upper elementary student, whether you're a parent, tutor, teacher, or a kid yourself. And it's pretty fun for adults as well.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

I can't honestly vouch for the fact that the book covered absolutely everything as the author claims, but it's really hard to imagine what she might have left out. There's some serious research presented here, along with a lot of laughs! Don't miss out on this book!

5 out of 5 stars Great "Science".......2007-09-07

It's a beautifully produced, funny, most amazing book I've seen on the "science" of Dragonology. Very good idea, beautiful illustrations, witty text, fun pull-outs, even samples of shed dragon skin, wing membranes and dragon dust. We learn much about dragons, from their life cycles and behaviors to their flying techniques... At today's meeting all mother's from my son's preschool made a collective order for 17 copies of Dragonology together with additional 17 copies of Why Some Cats are Rascals ( Book 3) - an incredibly educational cats stories for children. Especially Book 3 of the series gives a lot of information about American history and geography.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific!.......2007-08-05

My now-9-year-old daughter has ALWAYS been fascinated by dragons and dinosaurs; there has never been a time when she wasn't. Today was a Dragonology birthday. This book and it's companions (Dragonology Handbook, Dragonology game, toys, etc.) are an utter delight to children AND adults alike. It's amazingly real, and even has me wondering if Ernest Drake was a real man and lived in the 19th and 20th centuries. It's SO much fun for my daughter to actually be able to study dragons in an in-depth manner. But, I think Komodo Dragons will always have a special place in her heart. I highly recommend this book and its companions to any dragon-lover!

3 out of 5 stars Taken For What It Is, It's Good.......2007-07-19

What it is is a Children's dragon book, obviously influenced by "Tolkien's" Mythology. This book would be most entertaining to the tween-early teen market. Repetitive insert of the "dragon dust" cost this book another star. In the end it's a pleasant read that gives a nice overview of several breeds of dragons.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-21

This is probley the best book i have ever read! (well, thats not counting fantasie...) Look, i am 12,and I think its great. I firmly belive in Dragons, faries, and things of those sort. The drawings are great, and it has just about as much information on dragons as you will ever need. Five star!

5 out of 5 stars where is my dragon book??.......2007-06-12

i loaned it out three times... but the last time it didn't come back.... i guess i am not the only one who loved it!!!

1 out of 5 stars Ugh.......2007-07-10

I bought this book on a whim to see if it was really as bad as they say. While it does cover a lot of topics, most are glazed over. She also spends pages and pages writing about things unrelated to the subject. It seemed like every sentence had extra words added to it to take up more space. There several instances where for four pages + (this book is pretty large) she typed and typed but managed to say nothing useful at all.

I may be fairly new to this but I'm pretty sure glitter has no place in magick. The book does not talk about the gods and goddess save to provide a rather lame list of deities associated with each pantheon. Over and over again hiding your magickal activities is stressed. While the more important aspects, like being in touch with nature get misplaced behind Acne Removal spells.

This book is definitely meant for teens.

Her use of long repetitive phrases really bothers me because it seems like half the book is just filler. Not to mention the history being off and the almost total omission of deity.

Don't buy this book.

1 out of 5 stars A "Victim".......2007-07-02

This is a review about all of Silver Ravenwolf's "To Ride a Silver Broomstick" and its sequels and her BOS-Encyclopedia book.

Until today, I never realized the ineffectiveness of Silver Ravenwolf's books. I am 16. I have read/owned her books since I was 11. When my (christian) aunt came into my room about one week ago when I was playing with my cousins, my immediate reaction was "Oh no, she's going to think I'm corrupting her children with what she thinks is a 'Satanic, evil' religion." When I reflected upon my reaction, I realized I was judging my aunt, and Christianity, and that I, I was the one who was being judgmental and persecuting her. Silver Ravenwolf's books do slam Christians. I totally bought into her slander. Who doesn't want to feel better than one third of the world, more enlightened than one third of the world? Everyone wants to feel like they know secrets that other people do not. Everyone wants to be "right." I was/am no exception. If you want tolerance, it is not in these books, although they preach tolerance.

I have also come away with a paranoid attitude toward Wicca/Witchcraft. I feel like it is forbidden, hated by society. Silver Ravenwolf encourages teens to hide their practice from people for fear of persecution. Maybe she is right, but I feel scared to even TALK about it. That is not an attitude that anyone should have about divinity or their chosen religion.

Also, if you asked me to define "Wicca" or "Witchcraft" I would give you a very vague answer. I do not know the difference - what have I been practicing?! I could tell you some stuff about paganism, but not Wicca.

Well, I have begun studying ceremonial magic out of "Modern Magic" by Donald Michael Kraig. I have not read any reviews of the book, but I feel like I finally have an idea what I am supposed to be feeling in the rituals I perform. Kraig is very clear about what is factual history and what is mythical "history." With Ravenwolf, spellcasting techniques were so vague that I felt I had no solid base to work from.

The only way to practice a religion is the way it is meant to be practiced, not any way you feel like it. Even Wicca, a new religion, does have core beliefs that need to be adhered to. You can't just study the occult in general and consider yourself Wiccan or a Witch.

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE A BEGINNER. YOU WILL ONLY GET WRONG AND VAGUE INFORMATION. I WAS MISLED BY HER BOOKS.

5 out of 5 stars It's a helpfull book.......2007-06-30

I love the book.
Some people said that is complicate. But what in the live is not? Is more easy if you read the other book of the author
My firsth language is not english but I don't think that the vocabulary is too complicate.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for those who grew up with "Teen Witch" (like I did).......2007-06-20

I'm a big fan of Silver RavenWolf, even though many people really like to trash her style. So her historical information may not be completely, perfectly accurate, or she may not write what everyone wants or expects her to write. I can guarantee that no one's book on The Craft is perfect, and Ms Ravenwolf is no exception. But what she never fails to do is to encourage her reader to follow their heart. Although the information in _Solitary Witch_ is mainly aimed at the college-aged group (those who grew up with _Teen Witch_ and now are adults), the information and rituals in this tome are beneficial to practicioners of all ages. I highly enjoy this book, although I believe that it could have been organized a bit better. Overall, it is a perfect book for those who have progressed past _Teen Witch_ and are hungry for the next step up.

5 out of 5 stars Solitary Witch: The Ultimate Book of Shadows for the New Generation.......2007-05-29

I admit to being a fan of Silver Raven Wolf. I am enjoying this one every bit as much as her others. There is a wealth of information that is simultaneously mystical and practical.

I'm so glad I bought this book. It's the perfect book to read while on the can.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-04-06

This is a great bathroom book! I have learned so much from my trips to the bathroom now. Everyone that comes over and has to use my bathroom now has to know where to find this book because they have to have it. It's great for all that "everything you ever needed to know but never thought about" kind of stuff.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!!.......2007-04-02

Ive read this book front to back; I love facts.
It's a tad nerdy, but if you like to know things that are obscure that make great for awkward silence or everyday conversation starters, this book is for you.

4 out of 5 stars A good diversion from Game Boy.......2007-02-13

My 8 year son loves these Ripley's books. He will read it cover to cover in one sitting. He loves to take Ripley's to school to share and gross out his friends about people with metal studs all over their bodies or incredible animal feats. He forgets that he doesn't like to read when he's reading Ripley's. OK, it's not Shakespeare, but if this is what it takes, then it's well worth the cover price.

My boys (age 8/9) have loved Ripley's books since they were 6! The concepts, stories and pictures fascinate them. These books motivate them to read, so I support them. They are great to take in the car as an alternative to watching a movie! The wild stories spark family conversations, too.

4 out of 5 stars Dragonology.......2007-03-17

This is a great book. I loved it but it was very short for the price I paid.

5 out of 5 stars A huge hit with 8-12 year olds.......2007-01-08

My son and his friends are nuts about the dragonology series. This handbook has stickers, puzzles, lore, and fantastic illustrations. The entire book is made to appear as a relic from 1893. I love the "oath of a dragonologist" included in the front. My son very earnestly inscribed his name here: "I ___ ___ do solemnly swear to conserve and protect those dragons that still remain and in no way to harm them or reveal their secret hiding places to those who do not believe in them or would wish them anything other than good fortune." It's a real treat!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-01-06

Great for kids with a great imagination. My son has all of the book created by this author and loves them all!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful interactive adventure.......2006-12-26

I bought this for my 8 year old for his birthday. He is currently facsinated with dragons and a friend recommended this to me. We are having the best time reading and doing the "lessons" in this book. It not only relates to dragons, but also to real animals, habitats, food chains, etc. It's a fun book, but it also introduces structured research methodology and encourages the reader to think and learn. We both love it and highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Decent Companion to Dragonology.......2006-08-03

I originally bought this for my nephews, who have a fascination with dragons and such at the moment. It's definitely a result of the Harry Potter phenomenon, but the similarity ends at its "magical" quality. Its intent is the opening of minds to the hidden worlds of the imagination, and a rekindling of young peoples' interests in areas of mythology and classic literature. Supposedly the work of the last dragonmaster, the book aims to dispel the myths on dragons, recalling Hagrid's comments that they are "very misunderstood creatures". While Dragonology has lots of bells and whistles and moving parts, this is, as it says, more a handbook, and not as fun as its predecessor. It is great for stimulating the imagination of children (of all ages, apparently), but it's a slightly more involved text than Dragonology, and therefore likely to appeal to children 10+. It's artwork and some of its content appears based on The Flight of Dragons, by Peter Dickinson, upon which Discovery's Dragon's World DVD was also based. Both of these are great additions to this book, if you can get them.
