Book Description
This collection of true stories examines incidents involving the use of firearms by ordinary citizens for personal protection against criminals. Three basic types of events are discussed: armed defense at home, at work, and in a public place. Each episode is explored in detail, with a look at the citizen involved as well as how their defensive actions aided them or could be improved. From convenience-store robberies to police arrests gone awry, these stories provide memorable reminders of firearm self-defense dos and don'ts.

I couldn't put it down.......2007-09-11
READ this book! You can't read this book and remain unaffected. You will be forced to come to some educated conclusion as it is really hard to argue with actual events and personal accounts.
The author brings out case examples of civilians who came to an event what would either leave them dead or severely harmed, they defended themselves or their fellow citizen with a firearm, and we're shown the outcomes both good and bad. Excellent follow up with the the major players.
I re-read the chapter on Katrina over and over again - that one chapter by itself is worth than the cost of this book 7 fold.
Read this book! And vote to allow carry concealed permits in every state of the union.
Make America Safer.......2007-09-06
If you believe your government should assist deranged criminals in carrying out rape, robbery, and homicide against law-abiding citizens, then this book isn't for you. If you believe your government should not force innocent people to become helpless victims of such terrible things, then read on.
Some people believe that criminals should be protected from law-abiding citizens, instead of the other way around. These 14 case histories, as good as they are, probably won't pull such people back from the dark side. If you aren't one of those people, you will find these 14 case histories well worth reading. If you agree that rendering potential victims helpless is a bad idea, this book has valuable information for you.
Thank God I Had a Gun provides 14 gripping accounts of how ordinary people stopped dangerous criminals. For example, 72-year old Zelda Hunt confronted an intruder who surely would have killed her. She held him at gunpoint until the police arrived in response to her 911 call. Ms. Hunt successfully defended her life and property without discharging her firearm or killing anybody.
It's hard to imagine that a 72-year old widow would safely stop a large, strong, young male attacker by using her bare hands. Assuming she's an accomplished martial artist and a fitness fanatic, one could argue this is possible. But do you know any 72-year old widows with rippling muscles and a black belt?
Unfortunately, this "she beat him up" scenario is one of the two possible outcomes that the citizen disarmament nuts ("gun control advocates") would leave us with. The other, far more likely, outcome is this: the unarmed woman is raped, killed, and robbed before the police arrive. People who value life obviously prefer the outcome Ms. Hunt experienced. It happened only because, thank God, she had a gun.
Reviewer's note: In the vast majority of such confrontations, the armed citizen never fires the weapon. The mere presence of an armed citizen induces most criminals to suddenly change their minds. That's why thousands of aborted crimes go unreported each year. Those crimes simply never happen, because armed citizens prevent them.
How do we know this number is thousands and not merely dozens? We can compare "criminal protection zones" such as the UK to citizen protection places such as Florida and note the difference. The UK is suffering from a huge increase in violent crime, while Florida saw violent crime drop 90% in the first year of RTC (Right To Carry). Or we can look at "before" and "after" the passing of citizen disarmament laws in Australia. "Before" was much safer for law-abiding citizens. "After" is much safer for criminals..
More than hardware
This book describes true accounts in vivid detail, and provides an expert analysis of each account. The accounts and their analyses show there's much more to responsible and effective self-defense than merely buying a piece of hardware. For example, in one analysis, the author discussed what was wrong with the bullets used. That led into a discussion of understanding what's behind the target.
Review's note: Self-defense expert John Deshotel says to use hollow point bullets in your self-defense pistols. Police have intense training in this very aspect of weapons use, to reduce the chances of hitting an innocent bystander or other unintended target. A couple of the accounts provide especially good cases for teaching how to use firearms more safely. Mr. Deshotel also says a pistol is a puny weapon. This book mentions an adage many instructors are fond of--use your pistol to shoot your way to your shotgun or rifle.
On any shooting range, the concept of safety permeates the air. People wear safety glasses. People wear hearing protection. People observe many rules of safety. A person who is trained in firearm use and who practices with the weapon is immersed in safety so much that the concept is "front of mind." The accounts in this book show how people used firearms for their personal safety. In the case of Mark Wilson, he made the ultimate sacrifice so that others could be safe. This book talks about safely using firearms in real-life situations, rather than just on the range.
Just as guns don't kill people, guns don't protect people. Well-trained people protect people. We do that by using guns we have been trained to use, when and where the situation requires. Guns are tools, and have no will of their own. If you visit an automotive garage, you'll see many tools. But the tools don't solve any problems by themselves (they don't cause any problems by themselves, either). The mechanic's training and experience make all the difference. It is the same for the armed citizen.
Reviewer viewpoint
Some people believe it's debatable whether government should respect the basic human right of self-defense. In fact, they use language to the effect that government gives that right and can take it away. These people continually tout victim helplessness as a necessary solution to crime. They have not demonstrated how making crime easier to commit will reduce the number (or severity) of crimes committed. Logic dictates otherwise, which is why such policies have always caused violent crime to skyrocket.
It's worth noting that the most outspoken proponents of pro-criminal, anti-victim laws exempt themselves from the consequences. Ted Kennedy has armed guards, and so does Rosie O'Donnell. Nobody has ever proven that disarming citizens somehow protects them from violent criminals. Logic dictates otherwise, which is why the survival rates are so much better for armed citizens than unarmed ones.
I think this book will motivate people to stay current with their firearms training and other aspects of crime prevention and self-defense. These 14 accounts clearly show that ordinary people can, with the right tools and training, face death down and defeat it.
Thank you, Chris Bird, for doing the nation a great service with the research and thoughtfulness that went into this excellent book.
self protection.......2007-09-01
This is an excellent book. It gets you thinking. Chris Bird is an excellent author
My favorite of Chris Bird's series.......2007-08-14
This book should be required reading for anyone who owns a firearm for self defense. You will learn from each individuals story of what to do and what not to do during an encounter. The chapter on New Orleans is reason enough to buy the book.
Excellent support for our often infringed right to carry.......2007-08-02
Each of these stories clearly shows why we cannot rely on police to protect us from violent crime. The need for this book is all the greater because these are the kinds of stories which are NOT reported in the media. The book begins with a story from New Orleans, where someone who didn't like guns ended up finding out, in the chaos that ensued after Katrina, that the most dangerous thing that can happen to a city is not a hurricane, "It's the thugs in the neighborhood who would do more damage." The stories are well-written, the book is engaging. I couldn't put it down. The book is a great antidote to the depression one feels when reading the daily newspaper and taking in yet another story of a violent crime and a psychologically damaged if not deceased victim. The people in these stories took up their arms and refused to be victims, and that brightens my day.
Book Description
He was the perfect horse, it was said, “the horse God built.”
Most of us know the legend of Secretariat, the tall, handsome chestnut racehorse whose string of honors runs long and rich: the only two-year-old ever to win Horse of the Year, in 1972; winner in 1973 of the Triple Crown, his times in all three races still unsurpassed; featured on the cover of Time, Newsweek, and Sports Illustrated; the only horse listed on ESPN’s top fifty athletes of the twentieth century (ahead of Mickey Mantle). His final race at Toronto’s Woodbine Racetrack is a touchstone memory for horse lovers everywhere. Yet while Secretariat will be remembered forever, one man, Eddie “Shorty” Sweat, who was pivotal to the great horse’s success, has been all but forgotten---until now.
In The Horse God Built, bestselling equestrian writer Lawrence Scanlan has written a tribute to an exceptional man that is also a backroads journey to a corner of the racing world rarely visited. As a young black man growing up in South Carolina, Eddie Sweat struggled at several occupations before settling on the job he was born for---groom to North America’s finest racehorses. As Secretariat’s groom, loyal friend, and protector, Eddie understood the horse far better than anyone else. A wildly generous man who could read a horse with his eyes, he shared in little of the financial success or glamour of Secretariat’s wins on the track, but won the heart of Big Red with his soft words and relentless devotion.
In Scanlan’s rich narrative, we get a groom’s-eye view of the racing world and the vantage of a man who spent every possible moment with the horse he loved, yet who often basked in the horse’s glory from the sidelines. More than anything else, The Horse God Built is a moving portrait of the powerful bond between human and horse.

The Horse God Built.......2007-08-02
I would recommend this book to any horse lover or Secretariat enthusiast. My interest in this subject is relatively new. I learned quite a bit from reading this book. Horse racing often seems cold hearted. I enjoyed reading about the relationship between Eddie and Secretariat.
could have been so much better.......2007-07-11
Like other reviewers, I assumed this was a book about Secretariat. Why? Well, the title is "The Horse That God Built." Not "All the often unacknowledged souls who cared for the horse that God built," which would've been more accurate, if too cumbersome. I love horses, have owned, ridden and worked around them since I was young, but this book was hard going. At first, the author states that he's going to also write about Eddie Sweat, Secretariat's beloved groom. Well, that was fine, too. It sounded like an unique angle, and certainly Sweat deserves acknowledgement. I also thought it would be intriguing to read a book that seemed to promise that it would address the class differences in the racehorse world head on. However, I never did figure out what the author's thesis was.
The stories about Secretariat and his crew were certainly interesting. Hero worship of "Big Red" reached such proportions in the seventies, that he appeared on the cover of Time and fans begged for a strand of his mane or even some manure. Still, after awhile, I wanted more than just reminescing that seemed random. I wished the book's structure had shaped itself more in a chronological order of either Secretariat's or Eddie's career. Overall, it read like a magazine story and should have been given more editing in order for it to become a cohesive book.
Disappointing.......2007-06-25
I was disappointed in this book as I expected the 'Untold Story' of Secretariat. What I got was a disconnected story of the search for Eddie Sweat. There was some new info and it isn't a total waste but it surely was disappointing.
Great Magazine Article.......2007-06-20
Mr. Scanlan, the winner of numerous magazine writing awards, has written another great magazine article. Unfortunately, Mr. Scanlan has written a book instead that does not support his story line past twenty pages. The thrust of the story is that Eddie Sweat, Secretariat's groom, was a super guy who did a fine job, but got left out of the shuffle of recognition of all those who made Secretariat great. Perhaps all of that is true. It is great that Mr. Sweat is getting some focus now. The book just does not have all that much to say past making the acknowledgement of Mr. Sweat's place in the historic picture.
Some of the principles involved in the story Mr. Scanlan writes (my great privilage to know them) have told me that there are many errors of fact. For what I know first hand, Mr. Scanlan never says anything absolutely wrong, and certainly not with malice, but he is careless and he does fall back on others to suggest interpertations that do not reflect reality.
For example, Scanlan, again not directly, bemoans the preservation of Secretariat's birthplace, Meadow Farm, as the new home of the State Fair of Virginia. This shallow conclusion is made from the car window conversation he had with site scavengers. So much is incorrect with this brief passage that it would take too long to detail, but the main point Scanlan misses is that the Meadow would have been turned into 10 acre "farmettes" had the Fair and Caroline County not worked together to keep the Meadow intact. A "farmette" is hardly the fitting end for Secretariat's birthplace.
Now the Meadow will house an equestrian museum that will honor Secretariat while the site will once again become a center of Virginia equestrian events. One phone call would have put this story right. Somehow, the scavengers were unable to brief Scanlan on these plans.
Two Books that Secretariat fans should read are Raymond Wolfe's "Secretariat" (snappy writing along with many amazing images), and Bill Nack's authoritative, "Secretariat: Making of a Champion." Both are fine works.
Big Disappointment.......2007-06-11
I absolutely agree with the previous review by Kathleen. This book was the first book I have bought about Secretariat; and I found myself wishing I had read reviews beforehand and bought either of Mr. Nack's books. This book rambled and had no true focus, and the title was very deceiving. I made myself finish the book; I wanted to like it, but I was so disappointed in the simple fact that it was not about the "horse that God built".

Great Devotional for Outdoorsman.......2007-07-31
Enjoyed Steve Chapman and his down to earth and close to God experiences. Highly recommend to anyone. Thanks.
Still Hunting with God.......2001-11-04
Steve Chapman follows up his "A Look at LIfe from a Deer Stand" with a fine pocket devotional that can be a part of every person's hunting experience. Each one can be read in several minutes and provide hours of meditative fodder for the quiet, still hours one often spends on a Deer Stand. I recommend it. Great gift for fellow hunters, too. Not preachy. Very practical.

Book Description
The memoir of a former top tennis player who dedicated her life, and the entirety of her immense fortune, to helping disadvantaged children. In the 1980s, Andrea Jaeger was a tennis phenomenon -- she turned pro at the age of 14 and was the #2 ranked female tennis player in the world. But, despite her success, she was unfulfilled. After an injury ended her career early, Jaeger began to answer her true calling: following the Word of God. Listening to His voice ultimately led Jaeger to put the entire fortune she had amassed on the tennis court into developing The Silver Foundation, a non-profit camp for children with cancer, and dedicating her life to bringing joy to others. This is the story of how she went from tennis great to her second service and the story of the incredible kids she's helped along the way.

A great example of Loving your Neighbor........2004-11-05
Arthur K. Dugan, an avid reader.
Andrea Jaeger's book " FIRST SERVICE " is one of the finest I have ever read on personal spirituality and I have read many. Her life of service to God through the giving of all her great amount of money to develop a place for children with cancer called The Silver Foundation. As I read through her book she reminds me of dedicated people like Mother Teresa in her work with the poor. I will read the book again and highly recommend it to others and how each of us needs to be aware of the less fortunate.
Wholesome Inspiring Book.......2004-10-30
Andrea is defintely an exceptional person, first as a tennis pro, then as a philanthropist. The latter is easily her passion and her excelling service to God.
She relates this story as it unfolds in personal memoir of her life and its turns, each one very much influenced by experiential leadings by God. This continues to develop as she senses signs which she responds to which eventually culminate in the founding of her magnificent work with cancer children.
Puzzling and of concern is her admission that she was babe in the Scriptures and still seems to be convinced by outward confirmation of rather bizarre happenings, rather than clear fountain of God's Holy Word. For example, her story in Detroit with the key to the kingdom is more poignantly given in Scripture repeatedly said to be Christ crucified for sins, e.g. Luke 24 et al.
While truly a model for all, but especially young and talented, to serve humanity, her tendency to follow outward occurrences and inward emotions to the exclusion and reduction of clearly revealed Word of God is dangerous and suspicious.
Don't let any of this reviewer's spiritual concerns detract anyone from this fine read and inspiration to all to get involved and serve.
The Inspirational Autobiography of a Former Tennis Champ.......2004-05-17
In the early 1980s, Andrea Jaeger was a household name, even among people who had little or no interest in tennis, the sport that catapulted her into the limelight. One of the youngest players ever to turn pro, Jaeger at 14 was everywhere --- in newspapers and magazines, on television. Her signature long, blonde pigtails made her immediately recognizable. She was the media darling of the tennis world.
Her career was cut short by an injury, prompting her to pursue a dream she had had since childhood --- not all that long ago, at the time --- to work with children. After spending several years acquiring business skills and other related experience, Jaeger and a friend moved to Aspen, Colorado, where they eventually set up a foundation and started a ministry to reach out to cancer-stricken children at a place now known as the Silver Lining Ranch. Jaeger's entire $1.4 million in lifetime earnings provided the seed money for the organization.
That's the straightforward account of what happened. In FIRST SERVICE, Jaeger fills in the details, the often remarkable, behind-the-scenes story of a woman whose childlike faith in God never questioned that He would bring to pass the hopes and dreams she held out for the future --- a future she always knew would not find its center in professional tennis. In her telling of the story of her life, her faith and her ministry, Jaeger clearly demonstrates that what was once considered to be her youthful exuberance is instead who she really is, because her energy, excitement and enthusiasm for life is every bit as much a part of her personality today, at the age of 38, as it was when she was a celebrity teenager.
Throughout her life, as well as the pages of the book, God plays the dominant role. From an early age, Jaeger sensed the presence of God even though she did not grow up in a strong faith environment. Many of her experiences with God have been nothing short of mystical; as a child, she had a vision of the Children's Crusade long before she ever knew anything about the actual event in history. Her narrative is sprinkled with accounts of dreams and visions that are bound to make believers shiver with supernatural delight and skeptics question her grounding in reality. But much of what she saw in those dreams and visions has come to pass and has contributed to the success of the ranch, so the skeptics may have to look elsewhere for something to disbelieve.
True to her nature, which apparently is an extraordinarily generous one, Jaeger is donating all of her proceeds from sales of FIRST SERVICE to help hurting children. In addition to the Silver Lining Ranch, Jaeger and the Silver Lining Foundation (www.silverliningfoundation.org) support children's charities in the U.S. and around the world.
First Service -- Finding a Purpose to Life.......2004-04-06
This book by Andrea Jaeger is ideal for anyone who wants to get insight into finding out what is important in life. Andrea was a great tennis player but she has found joy and purpose off the court -- helping others and being close to her faith. She tells her story in a way that makes it clear how others, too, can find joy. The book is also excitng to read as you learn about miracle after miracle that has helped her build a beauitful ranch in Aspen, CO, where children with cancer go to have great days of peace and joy. Andrea rocks! This book is a perfect gift for anyone you love.

Book Description
In a previous life, Herman “Hank” Fins-Winston had been a golf pro—an excellent teacher of the game who never quite made it on the circuit, having missed his one real shot at greatness. He now lives in a lovely condominium on the thirteenth fairway of one of heaven’s 8,187 golf courses. God and His closest companions, you see, play the game often. And though Jesus never bothers to keep score, Buddha never takes a practice swing, and Moses doesn’t consider it cheating when he parts the courses’ water hazards, they all take the sport very seriously. In heaven, even God replaces His divots.
Hank’s afterlife takes an unexpected turn when he is summoned to help a player whose game is in a slump. To his dismay, his new pupil is God Himself. Or Herself. Depending on the day. As they play the most heavenly courses in paradise and back on earth, Hank realizes that it’s he who’s learning the lessons—about fearing failure, about second chances, about the connectedness of all living things, about not taking the next breath for granted, and about our God-given ability to improve ourselves—one stroke at a time.

golfing with god.......2007-09-24
A quasi-philosophical book, the message of which we have all heard before. The best parts were the descriptions of the golf matches. Mr Merullo's conception of Bhuddism sounds good, but are not up to the facts. Go to Bhutan and see the Bhuddist fortresses, and one will see even the Bhuddists war and plunder.
Another look.......2007-08-12
A compelling story, well written and interesting.
Not necessarily for a person who is reluctant to
question their belief systems.
Golfing with God.......2007-03-26
This is the best book I've ever read, and I've given copies to all my closest friends. It is appealing to those who are outwardly religious and those who aren't. I read it periodically and love it more with every reading.
A good read lacking a little substance.......2006-08-14
Everything was great about the product itself, but there was not as much substance to the story as I thought there would be. It was a good story, but I just thought it would go further in depth.
Golfers will love it, others probably not so much.......2006-02-06
Herman Fins-Winston, or Hank, as he prefers to be called, was a professional golfer in his previous life. A young, talented golfer with a bright future until one day, at the Western Pennsylvania Open, he missed a gimme putt, and he fell apart completely. Hank fell off the tour and became an extremely successful golf instructor, but he was always deeply unhappy and disappointed in himself. In heaven, Hank lives in a condominium on the El Rancho Obispo country club. One day, he gets an offer he can't refuse: help out God on His (or Her) golf game. Hank plays a few rounds in Heaven, a couple with God, one with Buddha, and one with Jesus, Mary, and Moses. In the second part of the book, Hank and God go down to earth to go on an ultimate golfer's vacation, including rounds at Augusta and Greenbrier.
During this trip to earth, Hank realizes that he is not the one doing the teaching; he is the student. Throughout all the rounds of golf played, God is grooming Hank to overcome all of his earthly desires and become a "great champion."
Golfing With God is a very entertaining novel, and a real page-turner. While the overarching spirituality of the tale is a little convoluted, Roland Merullo does an amazing job of interlocking spiritual meaning with the game of golf. Many golfers believe golf is tied into your inner spirit, but Merullo takes it literally in this novel. God, who appears as a young, beautiful woman for most of the novel, is a very complex character. Merullo does an admirable job of trying to make God's infinite love and forgiveness apparent and vivid throughout the novel.
Part One of the novel, which takes place entirely in heaven, is the stronger part of the novel. It is much simpler in its exploration of Hank's spirit than the second part, in which Hank is forced to figure out the meaning of his previous life, and all the ones before it. My favorite part of the book was when Hank plays a match with, that's right, the prince of darkness, himself. What could have been really corny is written very well, and has a deep meaning that is tough to completely understand until the end of the novel.
If you love golf, and believe in God, obviously, you will love this book.
Book Description
The spectacle of modern sport displays all the latest commercial and technological innovations, yet age-old religious concerns still thrive at the stadium. Coaches lead pre-game and post-game prayers, athletes give God the credit for home runs and touchdowns, and fans wave signs with biblical quotations and allusions. Like no other nation on earth, Americans eagerly blend their religion and sports. Playing with God traces this dynamic relationship from the Puritan condemnation of games as sinful in the seventeenth century to the near deification of athletic contests in our own day.
Early religious opposition to competitive sport focused on the immoderate enthusiasm of players and spectators, the betting on scores, and the preference for playing field over church on Sunday. Disapproval gradually gave way to acceptance when "wholesome recreation" for young men in crowded cities and soldiers in faraway fields became a national priority. Protestants led in the readjustment of attitudes toward sport; Catholics, Jews, Mormons, and Muslims followed. The Irish at Notre Dame, outstanding Jews in baseball, Black Muslims in the boxing ring, and born-again athletes at Liberty University represent the numerous negotiations and compromises producing the unique American mixture of religion and sport.

A one-of-a-kind slice-of-life tale turned grandiose........2007-03-06
Written by Southwest Chicago native Jack Zimmerman, and set in his home town during the summer of '59, Gods of the Andes is a novel about ordinary, borderline destitute people struggling to get by in their daily lives - and a masterful betting scheme concerning baseball's White Sox, who are poised to seize the American League Pennant. A colorful novel of dreams tantalizingly out-of-reach pervading a neighborhood, and the willingness to risk all in hope of fantastic payoff, Gods of the Andes comes alive with vibrant impressions, boisterous dialogue, and the urgency of desperate hope that threatens when one's life is barely a step away from being penniless on the streets. A one-of-a-kind slice-of-life tale turned grandiose.
Great for White Sox Fans!.......2007-01-10
I really liked the way the book covered many different people in many different occupations and in various stages of their lives.
It had a predictable ending, but the ending is really what you had hoped it would end like, so I ended up pleased with the overall experiehce.
I had a lot to relate to with the location and story period of the book, so I probably enjoyed it more than the average person would enjoy it.
A fascinating, all-around FABULOUS read!.......2006-09-19
Each character in this novel is so incredibly well-developed that you won't want to say goodbye when the book ends! If you love Chicago, or baseball, or the 1950's or a just a great, solid read, you'll love this book. I can't wait for my wife to finish reading it so I can read it again! I've already ordered extra copies for Christmas presents!

Customer Reviews:
This book is awesome.......2003-12-17
The Book is wonderful and a great read--finished it off in one night--left me awestruck and wondering when the next one will be available.
A great book about hockey.......2003-12-17
The cover is fantastic! Looking at it kind of makes you feel like you've been checked by Gordie Howe himself. That is if being checked by Gordie were a good thing! This is one book you can tell by its cover! Of course what's most impressive is on the inside.
Shakespeare wrote in one the sonnets "so long as eyes can see, so long lives this. And this gives life to thee." Richard Kincaide has done his part to keep the legacy of these great gentlemen of hockey alive to inspire and entertain for, well, forever now. The rest is up to the fans. This book should be on the shelf of anyone who loves sports.
More than just hockey.......2003-11-12
Meet the greatest hockey players of all time. Rich Kincaide has caught the excitement, spirit, frenzy, and love for the game in these interviews of players on some of the best teams in the history of the Detroit Red Wings.
He may be interviewing men who played the game 50 years ago but you don't feel like you're reading history-- you are right there and enjoying the conversation with him.
Rich Kincaide's "The Gods of Olympia Stadium" is a great book for anyone with a passing interest in hockey and a must have for those who love it. Everyone: This book is a great holiday gift idea for the sports fan in your life!
