Customer Reviews:
Edgar Allan Poe's works.......2004-06-17
I think that Edgar Allan Poe is a really great Author. He completely mastered the style that he wanted to achieve. His style is somewhat of a creepy, cold feeling one. A coldness that grasps you while you read it. While you read his stories, you really can feel the creepy sense in each one. It's a great style of writing, that doesn't always appeal to everyone, but it's still a great style to accomplish, and he did it very, very well. I enjoyed reading most of his works, because they have a vocabulary on them like you wouldn't believe. I had to look up a few words that he used, but it was still nice to read. Anyways, have fun reading his books, and let them live on. :-D
Tell Tale Heart.......2003-09-09
I tought it was a well writen short story, but very strage. I would recomend this great piece of work to older people. I will read it again and I hope you read it, too.
Balance in the human nature.......2003-01-03
Lately I have been interested in the psychological state of socio-paths. In undertaking this study I was recommended "Crime and Punishment" by Fyodor and "Tell Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe. I would not agree with my friends thinking that Edgar Allan Poe's writing entail a socio-pathic behavior; as quite contrary the aggressor is faced with immense guilt and contemplating the actions taken; in the end confessing to the crime.
In this collection of very short stories which manifest them in tales of dark horror; Allan I believe is suggesting that human nature is a delicate balance of light and dark or good and evil. Most of the time this precarious balance is maintained; however, when there is a shift, for whatever reason, the dark or perverse side surfaces. How and why this "dark side" emerges differs from person to person.
The Tell-Tale Heart.......2002-01-10
Ive read this book in one of my classes at school. I would suggest it to anyone that has a wider vocabulary. Basically its about a man, the narrator, who has an obsession with another man's eye. The eye resembles that of a vulture's or in simpler terms it has a glazed look to it. The eye drives the narrator crazy. After many nights of waiting he finally gets the chance to kill him. He hides the body underneath the floorboards in the house. When the police investigate the narrator believes that he can hear the beating of the heart underneath the floor. He is sure the police can hear it to. It ocercomes him, and since he is so sure that they hear it, he confesses. When in all reality, it is his own guilt which leads him to confess... But thats a reader's digest version. :)
Edgar Allan Poe.......2001-04-02
This book of short stories and poems by Edgar Allan poe is very confusing. I would only suggest this book to an adult of teenager with an extremely wide vocabulary. I'm in middle school and I didn't really undrestand some of the stories. If you are into bazzar and weird things then this is the book for you. don't get me wrong Edgar Allan Poe is an awsome writer but the book is a little confusing. Be sure to make the right choice on this book.

Libro de Poe.......2006-08-03
The Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe is a short story to be read by all in a lifetime. This horror classic starts off in the first person narrative of a crazed psycho who assures the reader he is not mad. As he begins the detailed tail of his murder, the reader, becomes certain of the man's deranged mental state. Having a dilemma with the elderly man he works for, he decides that he must destroy his employer and his evil eye. After he suffocates him, the lunatic takes the old man's body, cuts it into pieces and buries him under the floor. When the police arrive the killer's confidence begins to fade as his "acute sense of hearing" notices heartbeats. Rapidly going insane, he believes that the police are mocking him and finally confesses to the crime. This story is a true thriller. Hearing comments from my peers about the story at a camp fire, I just had to check it out myself. The only limitation that I would give on a recommendation is for children under 13. Because of the graphic descriptions and the nature of the story it can be a little scary for the youth.
Poe's finest forte in the story is his development of characters as well as his detailed imagery. With a few words he can paint a perfect picture of the scene and of the characters. "--Nervous --very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad? The disease had sharpened my senses --not destroyed --not dulled them. Above all was the sense of hearing acute." In this first creative line of the story, Poe starts of by having the character deny insanity. By doing this the reader right away suspects that he is. Poe's characterization method is original and admirable to other authors. His morbid imagery is also legendary as he writes to describe the stalking of the old man, "..because Death, in approaching him had stalked with his black shadow before him, and enveloped the victim. And it was the mournful influence of the unperceived shadow that caused him to feel --although he neither saw nor heard --to feel the presence of my head within the room." The suspenseful story line is a landmark in literature as Poe's flawless writings carry on through generations.
Edgar Allan Poe's writings have become my favorite. His style, descriptions, and methods of creating a fiction are one of a kind. His literature is entertaining and I would recommend it to all with a high tolerance for "blood and gut" stories.

Book Description
The Tell-Tale Heart strips away the myths that have grown up around the life of Edgar Allen Poe, and provides a completely fresh assessment of both the man and his work. Symons reveals Poe as his contemporaries saw him - a man struggling to make a living out of hack journalism and striving to find a backer for his new magazine, and a man whose life was beset by so many tragedies that he was often driven to excessive drinking and a string of unhealthy relationships.
Fittingly written by another master in the art of crime writing, The Tell-Tale Heart brilliantly portrays the original creator of the detective story and reveals him as the genius - and unashamed plagiarist - that he was.
Customer Reviews:
Well done and significant. Return it to print!.......2007-02-08
Too bad this book is out of print. One of England's most respected mystery writers of the 20th century and a decent critic, Julian Symons, envisioned this much as today's "Penguin Short Lives" series is conceived: to nail a prominent life in a swift moving narrative with style and critical thinking. He originally published it in 1978 for an English audience but it serves Americans very well. In fact, the absence of American academic obfuscation and the neutrality of perspective are extremely refreshing. He has moved an analysis of Poe's criticism, poetry and fiction, as well as his enduring reputation, to the back of the book to make for an uninterrupted biographical narrative up front.
Poe is hard on any biographer. He was hard on his contemporaries for that matter. He was known to embroider his own back story, and he inspired enough animosity among former colleagues that at least one, his literary executor, went to great lengths to rewrite Poe's life most unflatteringly. Symons performs a yeoman's job of getting down to the facts and reconciling a complex personality whose facets often opposed one another. He critiques the popular Freudian view of Poe and clears up a number of questions about his marriage to a young first cousin. Most importantly, he affirms Poe's place in literary history and provides a fascinating look at early American literary culture.

Madness.......2002-10-04
This is one of Poe's best short-stories.
It's about obsession, and how guilt can drive someone insane in a matter of hours.
I guess Poe himself had a huge guilt complex. Anyway, the fact is that Poe can write in a style that leave the reader in a "edge of the seat" condition in less than ten pages.
As with Poe's many other stories, we don't know the character's motivations or reason to do what he does, and it certainly helps to get the story a little more obscure. Poe is able to pass an atmosphere to his stories in very few pages, and the final effect is amazing.
Fast and good read.
Grade 8.8/10
Best short story of his.......2001-04-03
It was a very good book. It is about the narrator who is convienced that this old man's eye is evil and it is going after him. His compulsive disoder takes him to go and see the eye every night. Until one night he goes to see it and the old man is up. The mad man shines the light in his wide open eye. the man kills the poor old man and does unmetionable things to him. The police finally get there and question him. To convience them that he is inocent he invites them in for tea. While sitting down he starts getting insane and hears his heart beating, but he thinks it is the old mans. He finally fesses and is sentenced to death.
A superb combination of art and story.......2000-12-16
(Note: This review refers to the graphic novel version by Mojo Press) What a shame this item is no longer available! This title reinvents Poe through illustration, most strikingly when the artist interprets the narrator of The Tell Tale Heart as a female servant revealing herself through dialogue, and the voice rings eerily true. Also included in this graphic novel version are favoites such as the Bells and Annabel Lee, illustrated with dark gothic flair. A must have for any gn collection, and a fine compliment to other Poe collections -- but good luck finding it!
The Tell Tale Heart.......2000-11-05
The Tell Tale Heart, as many of Poe's stories, takes us on a trip through the extremities of the narrator's mind. This un-named and unexplored narrator has obsession with an old man's eye. He see's the eye as different from his other and calls it evil. His excessive compulsive disorder takes him to the old man's apartment every night at midnight and very slowly and carfully looks in to see the eye, when he doesn't see it, he goes away as slowly and as carefully as he came. He does this until one night the old man is up and hears the creepy narrator coming to his house unaware of who it is. He is shaking with fear his heart pounding, and then the narrator shines the light on the wide open evil eye. The mad-man kills the poor old man and does unmentionable things to his corpse. This is not the end of the story. Finally, the police come and start to question the narrator. To convince them, the mad-man invites them to stay for tea after they find him innocent. The narrator starts going more insane and hears his own heart beating, but thinks its the dead old man. He finally fesses up to the crime, and is sentenced to death.
This was intresting:-).......1999-12-10
The Tell Tale of Heart by Edgar Allen Poe wrote about a mad man who killed someone, Eventually tells on himself. This man is known to be crazy. Every night he goes in a room and watches the man with the evil eye. Until one night he decides to kill him. The mad man thinks the evil eye is after him. This book would be of interest to middle school level to adults. I loved his vivid details and use of vocabulary. This story is one of many stories I loved of Edgar Allen Poe. His twisted mind makes many of his works enjoyable. I recommend this book to many people.
