5 out of 5 stars You won't believe her behavior.......2006-12-07

As a life-long resident of Minnesota and a frequent visitor of Duluth, home of the famous Congdon mansion (aka Glensheen), I grew up with a vague idea of the murders that happened in that house. The story was that one of the adopted children of the elderly Ms. Congdon killed the poor woman for money. After reading this book, I see how very, very little I really knew--about the murder AND about Marjorie Congdon. As it turns out, being associated with the vicious murder of her own mother is virtually just part of a "normal" day for Marjorie. I was absolutely floored by her outrageous behavior--all in the name of attention and extreme greed. She literally stopped at nothing to get her way, and if opposed she exacted calculated revenge to very scary degrees. I've loaned my copy of this book to several people and have recommended it to many. In fact, while on a second tour of Glensheen recently, I stood in the gift store and pointed it out to patrons. There are many books about Marjorie, but I doubt any of them is as comprehensive as this one. It's written by the journalist who covered much of Marjorie's court drama and who became well acquainted with the lawyer from whose point of view the story is often told. It's far more than "just the facts." It's written like a novel with richly-drawn human characters. (Truly, it seems fictional sometimes, because I've never known anyone who pulled off what Marjorie does.) The book also includes a good selection of photographs and provides an up-to-date account of Marjorie's latest status. In conclusion, you don't need to be from Minnesota or even the Midwest to appreciate this book. It's an American tragedy, quite certainly. And you'll find yourself recommending it often.

4 out of 5 stars Very good .......2006-07-19

I just finished reading Will to Murder and I couldn't put it down until I was done with it. I read the first few chapters then toured Glensheen. It was very helpful knowing some of the history of the house and the murders and knowing exactly which rooms they happened in. The tour guide was asked how the University got the mansion and the tour guide said Elizabeth passed away. She didn't once say anything about the murders. The daughter has a lot of problems.

Book Description

"A wild spoof of absolutely everything: social pretenses, law enforcement, marriage, open marriage, racism, literature, television, science fiction, and sex. Dozens of plots perk along at an amazing pace . . . . raunchy, dirty, outrageous, rife with cliches -- and often very funny." -- People
"One of the most brilliant, most radical, and most subversive pieces of writing to emerge from America in recent years." -- The New Statesman
"Vidal belongs to that group of writers of our time who, precisely because they have always kept their eyes open to the disorders and distortions of our age, have chosen irony, humor, comedy -- in other words, the whole range of literary instruments belonging to the universe of the laugh -- as their means of settling accounts." -- Italo Calvino

2 out of 5 stars The emporor makes fun of himself for being naked?.......2007-01-27

While the book is funny and drew my interest in what would happpen, it was ultimately sterile and uninvolving. Quite a disappointment from the author of two of my favorites, "Julian" and "Creation". I get that it is (among other things) a satire on the dry, lifeless, oh too clever world of Post-Modernism. This still does not redeem it from being dry, lifeless, or oh too clever. Granted it archly satirizes much of what is wrong in modern American life, but that only gets you so much credit.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious, Perverse,Incorrigible, and a Great Read!.......2006-11-10

Who else but Gore Vidal can write great historical novels, contemporary essays, and some of the most subversive and hilarious "Comic Novels" out there? He deserves the Nobel Prize, but is too good for it! Anyway, here is a very tall tale about some politicos, police officers, Aztec terrorists in the barricades, and some of the most hilarious comments on 20th century US pseudo-culture you'll ever read. Throw in some real sci-fi with some strange aliens stuck inside some swampland, with multiple US Presidents, and some truly bizarre imaginings, and you have a can't- miss oddball novel that could only be cooked up by a mind like that of the great Gore Vidal!

5 out of 5 stars Caustic...dizzying...hilarious.... Brilliant.......2004-05-01

There is a tremendous amount of violence in this book; the kind of subversively funny violence that makes it a bridge from the violence of Bugs Bunny cartoons of the 1940s to Quentin Tarantino's PULP FICTION and KILL BILL today. And that violence, profoundly enough, like its antecedents and descendents, is not in the plot; it's in the construction, deconstruction and delivery of each line in the novel as a whole. It is that kind of violence that is subversive enough in how it is delivered, in terms of context and irony, that makes this book so important, and, ulitmately, hilarious.

Only someone as well associated with the barbaric hypocrisy of the bourgeousie in American society like the Master Gore Vidal could write a book that reveals it to such maddening detail with such incredible humor. And yet, like an ADD child gone too long without his pills or a self-loathing genius comedian riffing while high on drugs, Vidal refuses to stop there. He begins to contemptuously deconstruct the very art form that is the novel to rip from it the very selfsame pretensions of artistic superiority inherent in it via its destruction--as it has existed for mainly the middle to upper middle classes in the first place. He makes his point that the novel is essentially dead, replaced with movies and the television hour drama as a vehicle for storytelling in the modern world; yet he does it while going off Hollywood television culture, in the context of his many stories. He even goes off on the very self-conscious postmodernistic style of novel writing after Pynchon, while staying true to the character and story development of about six or seven different absurd plots that form the bedrock of this sick but oh so American town named Duluth. Imagine a small, racist, politically corrupt town in the mid West with UFOs, Aztec terrorists who speak like Shakespearean heroes when their Spanish colloquialisms are translated, and people who, when they die, get reincarnated into characters on a television soap opera made about the town itself...and you have about HALF of what is going on in this incredibly silly and profoundly beautiful novel.

Gore Vidal is to Mark Twain what John Coltrane is to Charlie Parker. Read this novel, and see what I mean. Brilliant.

2 out of 5 stars weak beer.......2003-06-28

To judge by one of his responses to the Proust Questionnaire published in Vanity Fair, Vidal considers this peculiar little volume his chef-d'oeuvre. One can only assume this is another example of the well-documented phenomenon of a parent reserving his fiercest love for his sickliest child.

Although written in the nondemanding (for authors and readers alike) turn-the-squares'-cliches-against-them style of his celebrated poleminc-cum-sex-comedy "Myra Breckenridge", "Duluth" generally fails to sting or tittilate. Consider this representative (you'll have to take my word for it) sample of the book's approach, taken from its opening pages:

----------

"I believe, Edna, that a Negro is being lynched."

"You'll love Duluth. I can tell." Edna revs up her jalopy's motor. "We have excellent race relations here, as you can see. And numerous nouvelle cuisine restaurants."

------------

Oh, that vile bourgeois complacency! I can just picture Vidal's Washington-elite nostrils twitching with contempt as he composes at the writing desk in his palazzo in Ravello, Italy. Only one can't help but wonder: is it racism that excites his disgust or just the stench of the middle class?

5 out of 5 stars A book to be read.......2000-02-08

This book is Ha-Ha funny and Hmmmm interesting all at the same time. It is a satire, among many other things. Read it and read it again, and then once more, then put it aside for a few years, then read it again. You'll thank yourself for doing so.

5 out of 5 stars Great book........2006-07-02

Bravo to those who understand domestic violence dynamics and write important books like this to help others! Bravo to those who have read this informed piece of literature and let it change their lives! The Duluth Model places power and control at the center the analysis of the relationship dynamic and shows the various ways in which this control has been commonly used and justified, resulting in the most common source of injury and emergency room visits for women in this country. Do not fear, the Duluth Model is ANYTHING but prejudicial against men. As a woman, I have found it to be helpful in seeing how my desire for power and control can affect how I interact with my husband.

1 out of 5 stars Too many things wrong.......2005-04-08

Domestic Violence is a PEOPLE problem. Not a gender issue. The Duluth Model only seeks to embarrass and blame men as if it were exclusively a male characteristic, rather than giving real help to stop abusive behavior. Nevermind that women are just as likely to initiate violence against a man. Programs that use the Duluth Model are only creating an adversarial dynamic between men & women. It clearly reflects the feminist IDEOLOGY of male oppression towards women. So there is obviously a heavy bias.

I am myself a recovering batterer. I began my process of change well over ten years ago after attending a Duluth Model program at the Center for Nonviolence in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Previously I had attended two six month long Anger Management Programs conducted by PhD Psychologists and MSW's. Today I conduct a batterers program myself using the Duluth Model outlined and explained in this book. This program has changed my life.

5 out of 5 stars Not done but convinced she's psycho........2007-07-02

I haven't finished the book yet but had to take a break to comment. I wait tables in a restaurant in Tucson frequented by Hagen after her 2004 release. I must have waited on her twenty times and never even suspected what kind of person she is. She always came in with her Greyhound guide dog and always attracted attention because of how beautiful the dog was. She rescued it from a racetrack and took such pride in the fact that he was the first Greyhound guide dog in Arizona or the U.S., one or the other. She would absolutely glow with pride from the attention she got from this dog. And frankly I tired of hearing her tell the same story to anyone who would listen. But I always found her to be fairly pleasant, but a little frumpy. And cheap. I always made sure to give the dog love and special attention, yet never yielded more than a $[...] tip. When we heard of her arrest in 3/07 for [...], and that the guy she ripped off was a close friend who died and she had cremated before notifying the family, we were floored. You just don't know people anymore, and now reading her history it all fits. I hope she never gets out.

3 out of 5 stars OK read. Had a tendency to be confusing and not connected.........2007-05-23

I checked this book out from the library about a week ago and I am still making my way though it. It is a laborious read because the author is confusing at times. I like to understand what I read, and I sometimes find myself rereading a section or paragraph just to understand. I found myself doing that a lot in this book. I felt that the writer bounced around during some explanations, and I had to reread the paragraph several times just to get a general understanding. Other times, I just gave up and continued on.
It seemed to me that some items that are relevant to a good understanding of the story could use more explanation, and other items that seem to have small relevance to the story are covered in great detail.
I also felt that the writer had little actual connection to the story. I felt like it was a compilation of facts mixed in with some actual writing. More actual writing and attention to detail would have made this book an exceptional read.
I would still recommend the book because the story itself is so interesting. I would pick up the other books that were written about this story just so that I can possibly pick up on the things this writer failed convey.

5 out of 5 stars Glensheen's Daughter, The Marjorie Congdon Story.......2007-05-15

Totally interesting, true story about a woman who never had enough. She outsmarted the law for years and years, even when murder was involved. A real page turner.

4 out of 5 stars Very well written.......2002-05-05

I had never heard of Marjorie Congdon or Glensheen's Mansion before, so this was very interesting. So much detail, I thought it would never end, but interesting nevertheless. What a creep she must be! Thanks to Amazon.com I found this book; I have never seen it in a book store in my area in southern California.

3 out of 5 stars Not riveting.......2001-08-27

It's just that I can see the author probably never met M. Congdon and just wrote the story from articles and interviews. It would have been a better telling with a little psychology....there was no mention of her upbringing or really of anyone's real personality. The whole thing was a bit cold I guess. It was interesting to see at the end that M. Congdon's name may be in the news soon...............

5 out of 5 stars Will to Murder.......2007-08-30

I have followed the story for over 30 years now.
I do not see Marjorie as "greedy", as a normal person would be greedy. She gave more to others and to her children, friends, and family than she did to herself. I think she had a "spending" problem, I see her as probably a bit spoiled by a person who knew nothing about discipling children, and she certainly was raised in a lifestyle that most of us never had, but did she kill her mother? NO, I don't believe she had anything to do with it. Upon Elisabeth's death, there had to be over 100 people that would have benefited.
Her husband never once implicated her as an accomplice, even though he certainly could and had a right to, especially after she dumped him while he was in prison. Even after she was acquitted of the crime in her own trial, her husband certainly could have pointed the finger at her at that time, as she could not have been tried again for the same time. Yet, he did not. In fact, he said to his dying day that he didn't kill them either.
I am just wondering why the so-called "third party" was never gone after, and why the case was closed?
I think all of Marjorie's problem were a sign of this anger and rage she had inside of her over this money, that she could never seem to get her hands on. Her mother set the precident by giving her money as she needed it, but after the Trustees got control of it, she had to grovel and was humiliated by it. I would have been mad too, if someone was always trying to keep my money from me. What business is it of theirs if I wanted to spend it all in one day! However, there are proper and improper ways of channeling anger of course.
A very good read in my opinion, but way too many holes in the story to be able to know who really did what.
Much was based on hearsay.

5 out of 5 stars Loved this book.......2006-11-27

My husband bought this book for me since I loved touring Glensheen and also I'm a big fan of true crime books. This book was the perfect combination. Loved all the nitty gritty details of everyone's life - really made it enjoyable - Like you're there.

5 out of 5 stars Inconceivable...........2006-04-16

If this book were fiction, I might dump it for being completely unbelievable. Most people would think, "No one could possibly do all that." Unfortunately for Miss Elizabeth and her nurse, it was not fiction.

I had been told it was boring--and horrible to read. I got it from the library and soon realized I couldn't put it down. I bought my own copy (online!) and couldn't wait to finish it. I have since loaned it to friends across the country (many are on the waiting list).

If a reader doesn't like non-fiction where the authors really include their deep-down feelings, then he or she might not like this. If someone just wants to read what seems like an inconceivable story, this should be perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Very well written and put together........2005-09-14

As a Generation Xer, I remember only some of the happening of this story as it unfolded in real life. I had toured the mansion couple times and knew of the story while living here in the Twin Cities.
I saw this book for sale and bought it at once. The book is very detailed, stocked up with facts before and after the murders, and very well put together.
I first thought it would be a little boring read about Carla and Chester but I did not know how famous and rich they were in Duluth. This book does a good job explaining the eariler life of the Congdon's.
Then reading about the murders and after. Man, I didn't know a person could be like that. And she lived in my area in Washington county. Marjorie Congdon Caldwell Hagen really did a lot of "bending the truth" and getting in trouble. I was suprised they could not get her on some of the facts, which the book later goes through towards the end of the book.
I recommend this book for your reading. I didn't know how I would like it but the more I read, the more I was curious on the final ending. I did not know what happened to Roger before the book. It will be interesting to see what ends up with Marjorie and where she will end up.
I thought the authors did a good job. I liked some of the photos and even a small family tree to help picture in your head some of the people in the book. At the end there is also a timeline story for you to follow if you wish. The print is smaller then some books but it is packed full of info and the whole story of Marjorie Congdon Caldwell Hagen and how much of a charactor she is.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!.......2005-07-11

While I was in college at the University of MN-Duluth, I worked as a tour guide at Glensheen. I have seen some of these things (i.e. the murder weapon, blood stains, etc.) first hand. This is a very gripping account of the tragedy that happened that night. Although tedious at times, it was very interesting to read what happened behind the scenes to build the case against the Caldwells. Also, it was amazing that the authors had DNA testing done to some evidence and the results were interesting. That woman is crazy (in my opinion), and this book gives you a very detailed account of how she grew up and how she could spend money like it was water. I would, and have, recommended this book to everyone that has interest in Glensheen.

Book Description

In a riveting debut thriller that has drawn comparisons to masters of the genre like Dennis Lehane and Michael Connelly, Brian Freeman weaves obsession, sex, and revenge into a story that grips the reader with vivid characters and shocking plot twists from the first page to the last.
Lieutenant Jonathan Stride is suffering from an ugly case of déjà vu. For the second time in a year, a beautiful teenage girl has disappeared off the streets of Duluth, Minnesota—gone without a trace, like a bitter gust off Lake Superior. The two victims couldn’t be more different. First it was Kerry McGrath, bubbly, sweet sixteen. And now Rachel Deese, strange, sexually charged, a wild child. The media hounds Stride to catch a serial killer, and as the search carries him from the icy stillness of the northern woods to the erotic heat of Las Vegas, he must decide which facts are real and which are illusions. And Stride finds his own life changed forever by the secrets he uncovers. Secrets that stretch across time in a web of lies, death, and illicit desire. Secrets that are chillingly…immoral.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A remarkable book.......2007-09-21

Immoral is a remarkable book for a first time author. Brian Freeman has a great career in the tradition of Michael Connelly or Stuart Woods in that he creates believable characters that you care for and then he walks you step by step through how their lives intersect and what it means at a human level to encounter violence and understand what it does to people's lives. Immoral jumps from Minnesota to Las Vegas and back in a way that kept me riveted to the book. His portrait of a systematic deliberate killer with no remorse is utterly believable and extraordinarily chilling. I would read anything Brian Freeman wrote.

4 out of 5 stars A promising debut.......2007-08-27

The first thing I did after wolfing down Brian Freeman's Immoral one hot summer weekend is to go out check out the customer reviews on here. I see there's no need to summarize the story; no need to comment on the slightly incredible world of BF, where most of the woman are bootylicious babes, or that the conclusion of the book may be a bit hard to swallow (although it went down just fine for me).

So my impressions are that this is a remarkable debut novel and that the intricate plotting and detail have all the earmarks of bestselling author...not great literary figure, but bestselling author. This is a great beach read, a stay-up-past-your-bedtime, can't-put-it-down thriller, and the author should go a long way in the genre. I think this books cooks the way it does is because Freeman not only knows how to craft a suspenseful thriller, but he also knows how to create characters we can really care about and who have unique feelings beyond being pawns in the suspense. I don't really agree with some of the other reviewers who call his characters two dimensional or cardboard--I think for the genre, they're way above the norm in terms of histories and detail and each one of them seemed real in my imagination (despite the literary "ogling" of women Freeman does, he still succeeds in making even the hottest sex objects real people and often powerful ones).

All in all, a highly recommended example of excellent genre writing...and a great read!

1 out of 5 stars What a disapointment!.......2007-03-30

The story was slow and the writer seemed to use blatant gmmicks to end many chapters.
The entire story is implausable, and the silliness of the story is even worse.
Rachel is some super woman! graeme is some nut, but he "hunts" only after having been turned down by Rachel? That is the stupidest thing i have ever read.
The entire ending is such a gimmick, it is a blantant attempt at hiding a bad story. There was no suspense, this is not a nailbiter. I wasted hours reading this book, hoping for a payoff. the payoff never came. The words "intelligent plot" shoudl never eb used to describe this book.

HORRIBLE!! The fact that this was nominated for an Edgar Award shows how bad books and writers have become.

2 out of 5 stars Nominated for an Edgar . . . but why?.......2007-02-12

The middle third of this book is pretty good. That's the part that is a police procedural even though the police follow no procedures I've ever heard of. The first third, the courtroom drama is probably good if you care for legal mysteries. The last third, where the author descends into soft porn, and realism going totally out the window, is just to be endured. All this sprinkled with cliches (jeans so tight you need a knife to cut them off?) and thrown into a blender to make the storyline as convoluted as possible.

There is talent here. With a stronger editor and a decision on what genre he's writing, Mr. Freeman has the ability to write a novel that is qualified to be nominated for an Edgar. But this wasn't it.

1 out of 5 stars lacking.......2006-12-10

Another reviewer was completely accurate in describing the immature sex scenes which the author seemed to feel necessary throughout the book. I felt he portrayed police and investigators as sex-starved, mindless twits who were too easily distracted from their case. There was no reason to care about any character, which made the ludicrous, slap-it-together ending less of disappointment. Pop-lit with some relationships what you're looking for? This is it. But for someone seeking a plot that actually keeps you guessing and surprises you with a satisfying ending, keep looking. And please let me know when you find it.

Book Description

Duluth, Minnesota, ìThe Zenith City of the Unsalted Seas,î is located on the shores of Lake Superior. Once a center for shipping, lumber, mining, steel, railroads, grain, and one of the nationís largest ports, it housed some of the wealthiest people in the country. During the 1880s, the New York newspapers believed that within 20 years it would be larger than Chicago. ÝÝDue to all of this wealth, the city grew at a remarkable rate, yet it also suffered through several recessions that almost destroyed it. With many handsome houses and remarkable buildings, Duluthís architectural heritage is among the strongest in North America. At the turn of the 20th century, it boasted more park land and green space, per capita, than any other American city, and offered residents a lifestyle that was incomparable.

5 out of 5 stars Aweswome pictoral history of Duluth!.......2007-07-01

I bought this book for my Grandmother who has lived in Duluth her whole life and knows the story behind every building, mansion, and important Duluthians and she loved it! She recognized many of the old buildings and names, and she even learned a thing or two from it! She said it was the best book anyone has ever given her and I really enjoyed looking through it myself. I would really like a copy for myself!

5 out of 5 stars Historic photographic view of a beautiful city .......2004-10-03

The quantity and quality of photos in this book amazed me. Sheldon T. Aubut and Maryanne C. Norton do an outstanding job captioning the photographs, giving plenty of interesting information, but not enough to lose one's attention. Being born and raised in Duluth, I was surprised at how little I actually knew about the city and some of the buildings I knew so well. I couldn't put the book down.... I truly was mesmerized.

5 out of 5 stars A Story Well Told..........2002-08-03

Sheldon T. Aubut and Maryanne C. Norton bring the history of Duluth, Minnesota's buildings to life in this book. "Duluth" starts with an early history of the Indian settlements of the Sioux and Ojibwe people, to Minnesota Point and the street car line serving both residents and businesses in the late 1800s.

Then we tour the West Downtown business district with its two-story structures where families lived on the second floor, to the West End now known as Lincoln Park. Continuing on our journey to East Downtown discovering mainly retail with fraternal organizations and theaters built in the 1870s and 1880s to the early government buildings constructed from the 1860s to 1900s and later.

Our hosts guide us through the hills, which rise from Lake Superior for a look at one of the nicest residential areas of the time. Personally, I did not know the city once had more millionaires per capita than any other city in the United States and this wealth produced many beautiful commercial buildings, homes, and bridges.

We then steer towards the East End, an area filled with the period revival homes that were much in vogue. Lastly, the "Streetcar Suburbs" where it was possible to live away from the crowded downtown area and commute, and Skyline Parkway, a roadway near the top of Duluth's hills.

"Duluth" is the perfect gift book for architectural aficionados and those that want to learn more about this area. The book offers a wonderful sampling of the city's significant structures and makes for enjoyable reading about its wonderful historic treasures.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent look at historical Duluth.......2001-10-25

Sheldon T. Aubut and Maryanne C. Norton's 'Duluth, Minnesota' gives an inexpensive look into the history and architecture of this picturesque city. I wish it had been available before my last trip up there last year. I will definitely re-read it before my next visit. The book's easy-to-read conversational style keeps you moving through, and the photographs tell a fascinating story. Very highly recommended for anyone with an interest in this part of the country.

5 out of 5 stars Handy guide book tells Duluth's story well.......2001-09-25

Sheldon T. Aubut and Maryanne C. Nortonýs ýDuluth, Minnesotaý allows readers to glimpse Duluthýs impressive past without spending $50 to $100 on a large format coffee table book
The medium format paperback, which sells for $19.95 (part of Arcadia Publishingýs Images of America series), is big enough for large, clear photos that give readers an idea of the wealth and power the late 19th century Duluth leaders enjoyed. The city is broken into several sections or neighborhoods, outlining the history of each ý mainly in photo captions. The authors are able to give a solid background on city history without bogging the casual reader down and without allowing large gray blocks of text to mar the book.
The stories and photos of several people who helped build Duluth and some of the celebrities who had connections with it are interspersed with historic and a few contemporary photos. President Rutherford B. Hayes owned property there and singer Bob Dylan was born in Duluth, to name two.
The captions under the historic photos tell readers what they most want to know: what the buildings were used for, what year they were built, and what became of them. The authors give enough architectural detail to help casual readers see what a Richardsonian Romanesque or Shingle house looked like, without sending one scurrying for a dictionary of architectural terms. This is an entertaining and handy little book to have, whether someone has visited Duluth or not. For someone who IS contemplating a visit, it would be an ideal guide book. I would definitely recommend it.

    Book Description

Located on the shore of Lake Superior near the Iron Range of Minnesota and, for much of its history, the site of vast steel, lumber, and shipping industries, Duluth has been home to people who worked tirelessly in the rail yards, grain elevators, and harbor. Here, for the first time, By the Ore Docks presents a compelling, full-length history of the people who built this port city and struggled for both the growth of the city and the rights of their fellow workers.

In By the Ore Docks, Richard Hudelson and Carl Ross trace seventy years in the lives of Duluth’s multi-ethnic working class—Scandinavians, Finns, Italians, Poles, Irish, Jews, and African Americans—and chronicle, along with the events of the times, the city’s vibrant neighborhoods, religious traditions, and communities. But they also tell the dramatic story of how a populist worker’s coalition challenged the “legitimate American” business interests of the city, including the major corporation U.S. Steel.

From the Knights of Labor in the 1880s to the Industrial Workers of the World, the AFL and CIO, and the Democratic Farmer-Labor party, radical organizations and their immigrant visionaries put Duluth on the national map as a center in the fight for worker’s rights—a struggle inflamed by major strikes in the copper and iron mines.

By the Ore Docks is at once an important history of Duluth and a story of its working people, common laborers as well as union activists like Ernie Pearson, journalist Irene Paull, and Communist party gubernatorial candidate Sam Davis. Hudelson and Ross reveal tension between Duluth’s ethnic groups, while also highlighting the ability of the people to overcome those differences and shape the legacy of the city’s unsettled and remarkable past.

Richard Hudelson is professor of philosophy at the University of Wisconsin, Superior. He is the author of, among other works, Marxism and Philosophy in the Twentieth Century and The Rise and Fall of Communism.

Carl Ross (1913–2004) was a labor activist and the author of The Finn Factor in American Labor, Culture, and Society. He was director of the Twentieth-Century Radicalism in Minnesota Project of the Minnesota Historical Society.

      Book Description

In this unforgettable collection of essays, Sam Cook portrays the enchanting North Country as a state of mind as much as a geographical area. Up North captures the mystic moods, seasonal subtleties, and colorful characters that fill the region from the Minnesota canoe country to the vast expanse of the Northwest Territories.

Organized by time of year, Up North describes every season's pleasures-sled dog racing in winter, hooking a northern pike on the first spring fishing trip, building a summer campfire, watching the aurora borealis in fall. Up North is an invitation to explore canoe country through Sam Cook's eyes and your own.

"My favorite book for the dreamers or for any outdoor person who enjoys a good story . . . Sam Cook is a master at weaving a tale." -Outdoor News

In 1976 Sam Cook trekked north from his native Kansas to work for an outfitter in the Superior-Quetico canoe country. Now, as the Duluth News-Tribune's award-winning outdoors writer, he uses Duluth, Minnesota, as "base camp" for creating his humorous, powerful, and compassionate columns.

2 out of 5 stars misses the mark.......2004-04-01

I can see quite clearly what Sam Cook is aspiring to here and that is the only reason I gave even two stars. In my opinion he fails to evoke the true feeling of this wonderful part of the country. He also has the irritating habit of refering to himself as "he" or "the man". People interested in the north woods will be better served by reading Sigurd Olson.

5 out of 5 stars Up North By Sam Cook.......1999-12-17

This is one of the best books I've read in a long time about going up north. Fish, hunting, camping, and meeting other people are the best settings in the book. The book makes you feel like your up in the wilderness hunting or on the lake fishing.

5 out of 5 stars Great to bring on trips and read the stories........1998-09-12

It's just a really good book about life in general and especially the way we feel about being Up North.
