Book Description
Was he his brother's keeper?Robert and Doris Angleton seemed to have the perfect life. Until she was coldly murdered in her own home, shot thirteen times in the head, chest, and abdomen....Suddenly the ideal husband seemed anything but perfect: he was jailed, accused of hiring his older brother, Roger, to kill his wife for money-- possibly as much as $2 million. However, without the crucial eyewitness testimony of Roger-- who soon committed suicide in a Houston jail cell-- the case against Robert rested entirely on circumstantial evidence. But the facts raise more questions than answers....* Doris Angleton-- deeply involved in a secret love affair-- had asked her husband for a divorce, which might have exposed him as a tax-skipping millionaire bookie and favored police informant....* Extensive handwritten and typewritten notes, coupled with a secretly taped conversation between Roger and another man outlining the murder, were found in a briefcase Roger Angleton was carrying when he was arrested in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, it was later concluded that the second voice on the tape was not Robert's....* Also in Roger's briefcase: $64,000 in cash, along with a money wrapper with Robert's fingerprint on it....* Ultimately Roger confessed to the murder in his suicide note, exonerating his brother of any guilt....A Texas jury came to one conclusion. Read this fascinating true-crime account of greed, deception, and cold-blooded murder-- and decide for yourself. With eight pages of shocking photos!

Wonderful, fast service. The book arrived ahead of time!! Thank you so much. Sharon Monarko
An Interesting Case, But A "Not-So-In-Depth" Look At It.......2006-01-05
This book about the murder of Doris Angleton in Texas has a very easily readible narrative by the author but seems to be lacking in background information on some of the principles in the case. I came away after reading it feeling like their was much more to explore in the relationship between the Angelton and her husband that the author didn't delve into. While the story itself, complete with a bad brother - sibling rivalry - a possible revenge motive, is interesting it lacks the details that other more researched books offer that gives a real good true crime novel it's "must read" quality. I would recommend reading it just for the unusual nature of the case but with some reservations. (If you have another book that sounds as interesting - read that one first)
Tragic Tale Deserves Better.......2005-10-05
The city of Houston has been home to more than its fair share of epic American murder sagas. Many of these stories have been expertly chronicled, i.e. 'Blood and Money', The Cop Who Wouldn't Quit', 'Cold Kill'. A more recent tale-the murder of Doris Angleton in her sprawling River Oaks estate-deserves to be well told. Unfortunately, 'Death in Texas', a sloppy assemblage of newspaper clippings and court filings, does not come close to getting the job done.
I have followed this case in the Houston Chronicle and Texas Monthly. The story has taken so many odd twists and turns that it seems more like a cheap murder mystery than a real life case. For starters, consider the two main characters. Doris Angleton is a beautiful, popular wife and mother who seems to 'have it all' but has secretly turned to internet chat rooms to meet other men. Robert Angleton, her husband, has become the most successful bookie in Houston while ratting out his competition as an informant for the Houston Police Department.
Given the complicated and interesting people at the heart of this case, author Carlton Smith had a huge head start in sculpting a classic true crime book. Unfortunately, for whatever reasons-tight deadlines, lack of access, limited perspective-the end result here is not much better than reading all of the reporting on this case so far. And consider this: 'Death in Texas' ends when the jury brings in a verdict on the state charge of murder. Since then, Bob Angleton has spent a year in a Dutch jail while the governments of the USA and Holland went back and forth, negotiating the terms and conditions under which Angleton would be extradited back to Texas. In addition, Vanessa Leggert, a journalist who had conducted extensive interviews with some of the key characters in this story, spent 6 months in jail because she refused to cooperate with the prosecution.
There are not many stories that include murder, infidelity, gambling, police informants, rights of journalists, treaties between nations, suicide, etc. This story deserves to be told in all of its tragic, bigger than life, unbelievable, Texas sized detail.
This story needs a storyteller........2002-03-02
Where are Jerry Bledsoe and Ann Rule when you need them? This story could have been turned into a great book - all the elements were there except a writer. The author took a mishmash of "facts" and called it done. I wanted to know the life stories of the characters, the dynamics of the marriage, more about the victim. I was extremely disappointed and don't plan on buying any more books by Carlton Smith.
Interesting.......2001-03-29
I've read some of Carlton Smith's books and they have always been pretty well written, you can't blame an author if this is all the information he has to go on...Common sense will be able to put the loose ends together...Bob got away with Murder..no question..The author maybe could have dealt deeper into there childhood backgrounds but I don't always enjoy reading about there pasts...I think he got right down to the story although a very sad senseless death occurred here over greed and jealously mostly money from what i can tell...Bob's brother Roger seemed like a real loser anyway worth reading not one of the best true crime books but interesting

Book Description
When Marlene Cowley hires Spenser to see if her husband Trent is cheating on her, he encounters more than he bargained for: not only does he find a two-timing husband, but a second investigator as well, hired by the husband to look after his wife. As a result of their joint efforts, Spenser soon finds himself investigating both individual depravity and corporate corruption.
It seems the folks in the Cowleys' circle have become enamored of radio talk show host Darrin O'Mara, whose views on Courtly Love are clouding some already fuzzy minds with the notion of cross-connubial relationships. O'Mara's brand of sex therapy is unconventional at best, unlawful--and deadly--at worst. Then a murder at Kinergy, where Trent Cowley is CFO, sends Spenser in yet another direction. Apparently, the unfettered pursuit of profit has a price.
With razor sharp characterizations and finely honed prose, this is Parker at the height of his powers.
Download Description
One of the great series in the history of the American detective story gets even better when Spenser is hired by a jilted bride to follow a cheating husband, only to cross paths with a detective hired to tail the two-timing wife. They aren't the most trusting couple in town, but as it turns out, they are the most dangerous.
Customer Reviews:
Bad Business is Pretty Bad.......2007-09-08
I listened to this book; Joe Mantegna narrates. Either Parker can't write or Mantegna can't read. The combination made for a very annoying experience as the two-dimensional characters were made even flatter by Mantegna's choppy reading. Every syllable is too clearly enunciated: I do-not-like-what-I-see; you-are-not-a-nice-man. It's ghastly. It's like listening to a nervous 5th grader reading aloud in front of his classmates. Joe Mantegna is truly terrible.
Robert B. Parker thinks that we're going to get a frisson of sexual excitement reading about the "depraved" businessman and his hijinks. Yawn! The cover of Vogue magazine is racier than this ridiculous, phoney-baloney story of money, power and sex.
I still don't understand what makes Susan Silverman so interesting. I still don't understand why Spenser's bullying is supposed to be cute. Hawk is a virtual caricature of the tough black dude but in the end, he does his master's bidding. Spenser's still his boss.
I think I have started whining so I'd better stop now.
After listening to this book, I vow never to read another "Spenser" novel and never, ever to listen to anything narrated by the wooden Joe Mantegna.
Sex, corruption and murder most foul.......2007-08-20
Robert Parker never fails to please with the Spenser series and he hits another home run with "Bad Business," an intricately plotted maze of corporate corruption, sex and murder most foul. It all begins simply enough when Maureen Rowley walks into his office, looking for someone to follow her husband Trent to find grounds for her divorce case. There is a bit of a complication when Spenser discovers another PI following Trent Rowley's mistress, and one following Maureen as well. Then things get ugly really quickly when Trent Rowley is found murdered in his office a couple days later. As Spenser tries to learn more about what is going on at Kinergy - the company Trent Rowley worked at - as well as a man named Darrin O'Mara, a talk radio host who keeps turning up - the bodies start to pile up.
Not to be missed by the fan of Spenser and Robert B Parker!
Light & Entertaining.......2007-04-06
I enjoyed this mystery. It was fun. Spenser always has a wisecrack. The story is okay but I wasn't bored.
Business Ain't So Good.......2007-02-25
I'm what you would call a very casual fan of Robert Parker's Spenser series, having read maybe half a dozen of the 31 novels featuring the well-read, tough-as-nails, gourmet-cooking ex-soldier/ex-cop/ex-pug turned PI. I'm no fan of mysteries as a rule, and PI novels are often formulaic and hackneyed -- they often have the feel of running in a groove of convention so deep it's a rut -- but some years ago I read the Spenser book PAPER DOLL and was taken by Parker's well-crafted prose, undulating plot, clever misdirection and quirky humor. Since then I've read a few more Spensers, and while none measured up to DOLL I can't say I was displeased to get BAD BUSINESS as an Xmas gift. That only came after I read it.
BUSINESS starts the way all Spenser novels start -- in Spenser's office, with him getting hired, in this case by a woman named Marlene Rowley, who suspects her spouse is cheating on her. Of course Spenser soon discovers that the routine divorce case is anything but routine, featuring layers of deceit that involve a Dr. Phil/Dr. Ruth/Frazier Crane radio personality, corporate intrigue a la ENRON, a partner-swapping sex ring, a traveling psychopath, and a number of other PI's. With trademark Spenser doggedness, replete with equally trademark sarcasm, he peels the corporate onion as the stakes mount from divorce to fraud to murder, bringing in his usual gang of sidekicks -- Susan Silverman, Vinne Morris and Hawk -- for advice and support.
As you can see, most of the traditional Spenser elements are here, and the first quarter of the book burns like a fuse with short, concise chapters that move the reader along nicely. Unfortunately, the plot soon becomes convoluted past the point of redemption, and Parker's gifts for description remain largely underused -- the vivid imagery of DOLL is missing from all but a few scenes. Worse, the characters have become completely one-dimension caricatures of themselves -- not one of the heroes has a moment of fear, anxiety, self-doubt or even emotional upset. They tackle the entire case with such an ironic, smirky attitude of supreme-self-confidence that any dramatic tension is crushed flat before it can take a breath. Are we going to solve the case? Of course we are! Are we going to win this fight? Of course we are! Sadly, this didn't have to be. We know Spenser isn't above inner turmoil -- we saw some of this in THE WIDENING GYRE, for example -- but in BUSINESS he comes off as part robot, part bully and all smug. I found myself longing for Chuck Liddell to wander in and beat some humility into him. (And Susan Silverman's constant stroking of Spenser's ego seems very childish and silly...."Could you beat him up?" For God's sake, she's a shrink, not a fifth grade schoolgirl) Ex-gangster Vinnie Morris, who used to have some personality, is an automaton who stares fixedly into the distance and speaks only when spoken to. And Hawk is just an embarrassment. The reviewer who wrote here that he's a sort of Stepin Fetchit to Spenser's Massa was actually being too kind. He acts like a combination of a plantation field hand and a second-rate blacksploitation villain.
The book's wrap-up is a no-tension ho-hummer that features several worn-out conventions (assembling the suspects in the study to reveal the real criminal/s) while stretching the limits of believability. Spenser and Hawk commit so many felonies to catch a felon that the idea that anything would stick to the guilty is ridiculous -- a fact Parker admits and then quickly glosses over in a tacked-on passage near the end.
I hate to trash the guy who wrote PAPER DOLL, which remains in my mind a template for a good crime-story mystery, but this book, except for its fine opening, is a phone-in performance that doesn't do justice to Spenser or Parker. Casual fans should avoid, and even die-hards may want to wait for the paperback.
Spenser Does it Again.......2006-12-28
This book had a enjoyable and not predictable mystery. It involved the two major components for murder - sex and money. Though not a page turner it was never dull. I always enjoy the wit and sarcastic humor of Spenser as well as his relationship with Susan and Hawk. A must read if you are a Spenser fan.

Customer Reviews:
Not Twain's best........2007-06-02
It is a mystery to me why Twain murdered this story. I forgive him because I like his other works.
The paper which makes up the 2nd half of this book is interesting but doesn't clarify anything.
Interesting complement to Twain oeuvre.......2006-04-07
In 1876 Mark Twain proposed to William Dean Howells, the editor of the Atlantic Monthly, that a number of authors including Twain himself each write a story--"'blindfolded' as to what the others had written"--based on the same skeleton plot, which Twain would devise. In the end the idea came to nothing, or almost nothing, because Howells never managed to interest other authors in taking on the task. But Twain did write his own contribution to the project. His A Murder, A Mystery, and a Marriage is a curious story about a greedy farmer's attempts to line his pockets by marrying his daughter off to a wealthy suitor. The farmer's plot is complicated, however, by his estranged brother's will and by the appearance in town, under unusual circumstances, of a multilingual stranger. The mystery--there is, after all, a murder in the tale--is laid to rest in Twain's final chapter with the unlikely introduction of Jules Verne into the story. Twain never published his novella, and part of the manuscript was lost for more than a hundred years. It appeared in print for the first time in 2001.
The Norton paperback of A Murder, A Mystery, and a Marriage includes four facsimile pages of Twain's manuscript and is beautifully illustrated with watercolors by Peter de S?ve. In a brief foreword and a nearly forty-page afterword Roy Blount Jr. discusses the history of the manuscript and places the story in the larger context of Twain's more familiar work and the politics of the day. It is not the most interesting of essays, but Twain fans who are sufficiently familiar with his oeuvre and with mid-nineteenth-century politics may appreciate it.
Debra Hamel -- author of Trying Neaira: The True Story of a Courtesan's Scandalous Life in ancient Greece (Yale University Press, 2003)
Unpublished for a reason.......2003-06-11
Finding an unpublished piece by Mark Twain is reason to celebrate, but that doesn't mean its shortcomings should be ignored. Though the story begins well and has an interesting set up, the ending is abrupt and does not fit well with what has gone before. More was needed to make this a coherent and, more importantly, an interesting read. For reasons unexplained Mark Twain ended this story savaging Jules Verne. I never read any opinions he had on Verne but would be interested in finding them, should they exist. This story is only worth reading as a curiosity. However, after doing so, one understands why Twain chose to let it languish on the shelf.
not impressed and not disappointed.......2002-01-03
I am a major fan of Twain and have always held him in the highest esteem. His "The Mysterious Stranger" got me through some tough times in college with the help of other books such as "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court". "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" IS the Great American Novel. There is little left of his that I haven't read and just when you think you've read all his best stuff, another short story comes out of nowhere and totally amazes you with his insight. This is not one of those stories. However, it's not bad and it's a nice enough way to spend an hour or so. Bear in mind that the Preface and Afterword are together longer than the story itself. There is some nice information about Twain and the the times in which this story was written but it isn't essential that you read them. Twain had an idea of taking a basic, simple plot and having 20 or so other authors of his era write their version of the story. (OK, I DID get that much out of the Preface and Afterword). His motion, however, died for lack of a second and we are left with this; his briefly written entry. It reminded me a lot of his style in "The Gilded Age". That book was too long and this book is too short but the story has an interesting twist to it. The moment I saw this book on the shelves I bought it and I have no regrets. If you're a fan of Twain's, you should buy it too. After all, if you act quickly, you too can have a first edition of Mark Twain.
LOL! My first Mark Twain book..........2001-09-20
This is my first Mark Twain book, and I got to say that I like it. For a short story, it's excellent and I usually don't like short stories.
This story tells exactly what the title is: a murder, a mystery, and a marriage. They all are excellently incorporated into each other and all has a purpose.
Also, the contributions from Roy Blount, Jr. and Peter de Sève are wonderful. The foreword and afterwords were informative about the book and the illustrations are beautifully, yet - in a way - comical. And the fact that this book is now first time published as one should cause a celebration.
Excellent book.

Fast-paced & entertaining.......1998-02-23
In this fourth of the Jenny Cain series Jenny prepares to marry her long-time boyfriend, police dective Geof Bushfield. Before that happens she gets involved with seemingly abused wives who appear to be murdering their husbands. The book delves into the the dynamics of abuse relationships and what happens to the women involved in them. Jenny also questions her forth- coming marriage to Geof while he is questioning if he wants to stay with the force. Although the book was written in 1987 it is still revalent to situations that are happening today. Perhaps the ending is a little too neatly tied up but still an enjoyable read as we get to know Jenny & Geof better.
Book Description
How To Create Your Own Murder Mystery Party will guide you through writing your own custom murder mystery party games. What sets these games apart from the store bought 'boxed' type of murder mystery games is that the party is designed by you and around the people coming to the party. After all, who knows your friends better than you? The other major and most fun difference is that the murderer is one of the guests. They know they are the killer and will be trying to protect themselves by lying, hindering others' progress, etc, while keeping their identity a secret. The book is a step-by-step guide, including many completed examples and a quick start game. The book covers how to get started, how to generate story ideas, choosing a murder weapon and body, how to choose who plays the murderer, generating ideas for puzzles and clues and the difference between the two, timing during the game, setting difficulty levels, keeping people involved and having fun and ending the game.

Spooky fun for everyone.......2007-09-10
I have used other planned party products before, and found them very constrictive. This is nothing like those. It is much more fun. What is great about this book is that it gives you choices - you can lean on the fab ideas in the book, but you also gain the tools and the confidence to make your own party. A great book for everyone who loves throwing parties with a twist.
FUN READING! Ester G. Rosiello-Saylorsburg, PA.......2007-08-21

Great book.......2007-08-01
This is definitely the best book to read if you ever thought about throwing a Murder Mystery Party. And if you don't know what a Murder Mystery Party is, this is a must read. Joseph Franco has done an incredible job explaining this stuff.
Creative and Fun.......2007-07-31
I've read Mr. Franco's book and I'm excited about hosting my first Murder Mystery Party. There are tons of ideas and suggestions and lots of help with getting started and personalizing your party. A must to own and a great gift.
A sure-fire way to have the best parties in your neighborhood.......2007-07-30
I've gone to several Murder Mystery parties, and they're always a blast. Even if you've never hosted a party--or if you're not very good at it--Mr. Franco walks you through the process of creating a Murder Mystery step by step. If you're tired of the same ol' parties week after week, year after year, buy this book and shake things up. Your friends will thank you.

Book Description
MURDER BY MARRIAGE introduces the socially prominent Lawrence family of Boston whose daughter, Angela, is soon to be married. When her parents, Andrew and Julia, arrive to open their beach house on Cape Cod for the gala pre-marital parties, a gruesome spectacle greets them in the high domed foyer. The body of an elderly stranger dangles from the second floor railing! This railing, carved over a hundred years ago for Andrew's grandfather, gave the house its name: Scrimshaw House. Terrified and bewildered, they listen to the police describe a crime which apparently happened weeks earlier. No motive for the crime seems evident. The house had been closed for the winter with only an old caretaker nearby. He recalls nothing out of the ordinary other than a few people stopping by to look at the place which was put up for sale by the Lawrences in recent months.
With impressive strength and fortitude, the Lawrence family decides to continue plans for the wedding parties, and try to forget the unpleasant death of a strange man in their home. However, this is just the beginning of a string of what appear to be random killings in their small town of Sakenett. The nightmare continues with horror gathering about each tragic death. Are the events related somehow to Scrimshaw House and the Lawrences? If so, how and why? When Angela's beloved art teacher is ruthlessly killed, the pressure becomes almost unbearable. Although no immediate pattern emerges to explain the murders, more than one of them does occur at Scrimshaw House. Fear oozes into the community with the fog.
Twists and turns of the plot guide readers of MURDER BY MARRIAGE to a startling final chapter before revealing why death stalks Angela's wedding plans that fateful summer at Scrimshaw House.

Murder by Marriage.......2002-11-30
Agatha Christie has left a legacy in this author's ability to weave tight plots and suspense. Having read all of Agatha Christie at least twice, I am thrilled to discover Lise Lanman!
Sounds familiar.......2001-03-08
I read Lisa Lanman's book "Murder By Marriage" and guess what???
It reads just like the 1968 manuscript that Lisa Woessner (now Lanman) typed from the story I dictated to her between September 1968 and March 1969.
The title of the 1968 novel originally was "A Summer At Sakenett" and then was changed to "Scrimshaw House," according to the two manuscripts in my possession.
I see that Lisa changed the title to "Murder By Marriage." Interestingly enough, that was the title of another manuscript that I dictated to her in late 1969. That, too, is in my possession.
Not only does the plot of "Murder By Marriage" appear in the 1968 manuscripts, the names of most of the central characters are the same.
It is a shame she didn't contact me before publishing the story as her original work, nor has she made any attempt to since then. It would have been nice.
I wanted to set the record straight.
By the way, I liked the story. It reads just like the 1968 manuscript.
John E. Fitzgibbon, Jr.
This Book is a Winner.......2000-09-27
My husband & I recently read Lisa Lanman's second novel & were very pleased with the story. It was even better than her first book. We are both mystery fans & were held by the way she pictured all of the people & the area so vividly that we felt we could see each step as the intriguing story unfolded. We visited Cape Cod many years ago & came away with just the feeling she set down on paper. The surprise ending was great because we love it when we have been kept in suspence to the very end. We look forward to more of her books in the near future.
Review of Murder by Marriage by Lisa Lanman........2000-09-01
Author Lisa Lanman shows "conceiving skill" in masterminding this intriguing mystery. Despite this ability, there is a descriptive sensitivity to the environs of Cape Cod and Beacon Hill, to tug on the heart strings of any one familiar with those areas. It makes for easy nostalgic reading and as the plot thickens, a "must keep reading" until the very last words.

Book Description
Pam White is a serial killer. In college, she and her two roommates form a covenant to avoid being implicated in a homicide that took place at a fraternity party. Twenty years later Pam is hanging precipitously near death from a ledge on a deserted mountain road. A car crash has taken place, and in the car are the charred remains of the husband of one of her old roommates. Despite a lack of evidence, Sheriff Sean Carmichael is convinced that these deaths were murders, and he begins a relentless, obsessive search for the truth. This psychological thriller, which sweeps from upstate New York to the Arizona desert to a Caribbean paradise, shows the degeneration of a womanÂ's mind as she becomes an unharnessed psychotic killer.

Book Description
Father Florian lifted the man's head, looking for signs of life. Gently, he removed the man's glasses. Dilated eyes stared blankly at him from a chalky blue face. Florian leaned across the youn man's body and raised the woman's chin. Her red woolen ski hat fell off and blonde hair tumbled down surrounding a pretty face. Her eyes were closed demurely, her long golden lashes resting on cold blue cheeks. A dribble of brown saliva seeped from her contorted, red lips.
Florian bent close enough to smell her lips. He was unable to identify the sour odor, but the Picasso-blue skin suggested cyanosis...the effect of poison. The Father passed his hand in the sign of a cross over the two still bodies, and whispered conditional absolution. He felt sorrow for the two young lives. Though he had seen death many times in many places, the irrevocable silence was always a surprise. How quickly the tenant spirit left.
Since arriving in the United States in the late '60's, the Marriage Encounter movement has become wildly popular. However, someone is taking a dim view of the encounter, when a death threat becomes reality. It is up to Father David Florian to solve the case in this great old-fashioned mystery.
