It just so happens that Ian also wanted to share dating and sex advice that he's learned from his various escapades. The problem? They're all separate. Why? Don't this things need to go together to work? What good is knowing everything about sex if you can't get a date? How can you get a date if the book telling you to do "this and that" is in direct conflict with the book telling your date to do something else?
I always wanted to tell my dating failures onstage because they are very funny and informative. They are too long, though, to work in a standup routine, so I'm glad I was able to put them in a book.

About the Author
Comedian-turned-screenwriter Ian Coburn was one of the most highly sought standup acts on the comedy circuit throughout the nineties. He still boasts the industry record 106-straight weeks on the road. Ian has written two feature length screenplays for hire along with nine of his own. He writes fast, knocking off some topnotch scripts in less than a week. His manager is currently negotiating the options of two of his scripts while he is developing a third with Davis Entertainment (Predator; Flight of the Phoenix; I, Robot.) Ian is also under consideration for a staff writing position on a newly pitched television series. His scripts have won screenwriting contests, including HSI's competition.
Standup comedy and the road shaped Ian's life and personality... it also gave him some crazy dating stories.

When I first started to date, I was the same as everyone when they start to date--confused and scared. Like most guys, I looked to magazines and movies for advice. Both sucked. Magazines told me all I needed were some cool clothes, a hot car, and the right cologne, along with a few million dollars to pay for all that crap. The articles were nothing more than guys on ego trips bragging about their sexual conquests; I learned nothing. Movies skipped the most important scenes, where the guy says all the right things to the girl. Instead, movies showed the guy meeting the girl, then cut to them in bed together; big f[...] help. To make matters worse, my mom gave me a book about chickens laying eggs and lambs suckling. Someone shoot me, I thought.
What I needed was a book with honest, adult advice--which wasn't afraid to get graphic when necessary--that taught me what to say, what actions to take, and how to read women. My sisters seemed to need similar information about guys. It would help if the stories were funny so I didn't feel so alone and self-conscious. Better yet, if some of them included celebrities, they'd be even more entertaining and really put me at ease. (If I knew celebrities struggled with sex and dating, I'd feel better about my own problems with them.)
No such book was ever published. Much to my surprise, as I got older I found I could use such a book even more. Then one day I woke up and realized: I could write the needed book. I had the celebrity stories. I had learned about sex and dating the hard way. I could tell guys how to get women. And I could tell women what men were thinking, as well as how to identify the good guys from the creeps. And I could do it all through stories of my funny failures.

Book is hilarious, Column better for advice.......2007-09-24
The stories in this book are flat out hilarious. I read it twice in a week it is so funny. I started by reading his column 'lunch is not a date' and then read the book. The column has more in-depth advice, often taking a concept from the book and expanding on it. While it was fascinating to read the column then read the stories from which his wisdom came from, it would have been better to read the book first I think. Great stuff - I cannot stress that enough.
Too Much Empty Sex Leads to Nothing but Empty Sex.......2007-09-09
I discovered this book in of all places half-drunk at a bar - it was advertised on a poster over a urinal at my favorite watering hole. It claimed to be a funny book about a comedian's "hilarious escapades with women." It is. But it is much more than that. Unlike pua manuals it has complete, excellent advice both for meeting and dating women. It also has lots of good advice for women, too and is also a terrific story of growth. (The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists is the only other book advising men about women which is also a story; all other books are just manuals for tawdry sex.)
Ian opens the book early on with an observation, and perhaps the most important lesson in the book, and one which pua's and other authors like Neil Strauss and Mystery would have benefited greatly by experiencing, as well, but didn't. After working early in his career with a comedian who sleeps with 3 different women in one day, Ian remarks, "And he was still on the prowl! I learned that sex can become a drug for a lot of these guys...I never wanted sex to be like eating a donut or sipping a beer...Too much empty sex - sex for the sake of simply having sex - leads to nothing but empty sex; highly undesirable." He decided early on not to become victim to his own sexual desires - which has clearly happened to the pua leaders (you have to sleep with 1000 women or something to become one, which I don't even believe any of them really have.) He goes on to state that there is a difference between adoring women and adoring sex and that some men who adore sex are actually very hostile toward women. I would say this description accurately depcits popular womanizers like Neil Strauss, Mystery and Tucker Max, who all seem destined to having empty, meaningless sex for the rest of their lives.
Unlike pua's, Ian does not preach about prescribed lines or dozens of defintions; he is about theory - like how to flirt or develop a sense of humor - and gives clear examples of how he developed these skills and how all guys can. For instance, he breaks down humor simply and tells dorks directly why women don't get their jokes. "The roots of humor are relativity and logic. People have to be able to relate to the topic to find the joke funny, which is why many women don't laugh at Star Trek or Three Stooges jokes. Women don't typically watch these shows, so how can they find references to them funny?" He goes on to describe how to develop timing, delivery and all the elements of humor. He does this with flirting, breaking the ice, making a move, yada yada yada; Ian covers it all.
Unlike pua manuals, the advice is not simply a bunch of lines (Neil Strauss promises on his web site to give you all kinds of new lines and jokes if you pay him lots of money); instead, it is the tools to develop everything you need. Once you understand how to flirt, how to be funny, how to be confident, yada yada yada, you can do it anyway you want. Most importantly, Ian explains how women see things; how everything appears from their perspective. Pua books and web sites don't do that because they don't really know; they rely on their lines and techniques; they don't have clue what is actually going thru the woman's mind and how she sees things or even why their techniques actually work. A simple perusal of reviews by women here and Ian's site, where advice is posted for free in his column Lunch is not a Date and for women on Lifetime, and you'll see that women recognize, often reluctantly, that he knows what they are thinking and more importantly, feeling - "Women act on emotion, often making decisions based on how they feel, not what they think. Oftentimes, their minds later second guess the decision, resulting in them experiencing confused emotions. It must be a dizzying experience; and one which guys need to be sensitive to in order to maintain a relationship or even get a date (sometimes women avoid even meeting a guy because they are tired of experiencing the forthcoming mixed bag of second-guessing emotions - "Should I have given him my number? Will he call? Do I really want to go out with him?")."
A great read with lots of advice. No pitches for expensive pua seminars. If you're a woman, it tells you exactly what a guy thinks but be warned - it isn't pretty all the time, though; Ian becomes a real jerk before he turns over a new leaf and he shares all of that. When something starts as new, something else often comes along as the next best thing. Pua's started the movement of books and advice for guys about women and charging money for seminars. Ian's advice is in the book and supplemented on his web site with a free column; Ian is the next best thing. Hopefully, enough guys will discover him before becoming bitter sex addicts.

The Book and Column are Gold, Pure Gold!!!!.......2007-09-07
I must admit this book and author has me eating crow. So many articles and books out there by purported experts are about a bunch of meaningless jibbersh, like getting a girl's phone number in 5 minutes of meeting her at a bar. Yeah, but how many of those women call back? Probably close to zero but the authors don't talk about that. It's bs. That's what I used to think. Then this week I read an article by Ian Coburn on ezine (man, I wish I could link to it but Amazon won't let me; just search his name or for this book and it will come up.) The article made alot of sense and told guys how to get a woman to return their call, calling out guys who try to get a number in 5 minutes as their focus. "Forget getting her digits. When you meet a woman you like, you want to do 3 things - be memorable, suggest a date, and create a reason to call." Find this article, it is gold! Then Ian's article on "The Flaw of Game" which defends the pua society turned me on to them. (I loathed the pua society before Ian's article explained to me that they weren't jerks, just guys trying to get better with women. He goes on to explain that their created terminology is what gets them looked down upon and misunderstood. He is right, the terms don't really mean what they sound like they mean.)
Basically what's happened with this book is that a comedian with alot of knowledge about women wrote a book telling the hilarious stories where he got that knowledge. It somehow became a dating guide (I agree with other college students that it is the new college dating bible) and Ian got an advice column Lunch is Not a Date. Then Lifetime hired him because he has great advice for women, too. I've been reading all of his advice and stories. It is gold, man, pure gold! Much better than anything I've ever seen and far more insightful.
I read The Mystery Method: How to Get Beautiful Women Into Bed and am reading The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists. Check them out, too, but realize, as Ian says, your goal should be to change who you are, not rely on lines and openings forever. Use them to get comfortable then move past them. Pua's don't want you to do that because they want to sell you their courses, which is a rip. Read the books. Find Ian's ezine articles "Get Her to Return Your Call" and "What About Her - The Flaw with Game Exposed". They are gold! Also, the second one has a great opener which is guaranteed to get the converstion going easily by wowing her. He calls it "2 to 9" and of course doesn't use it anymore because he is past game (i.e. needing openers, negging, etc), so it's available to the rest of us! (Ian's past lines and openers, onto what he calls the common-denominator. I'm telling you, read the book!)

This book was so funny. I am doing some research for a class and this was one of the easiest books to get through because it was so funny. It reminded me of a show I saw as part of my research. My First Time in NYC. Both were so funny! Give them a chance.

Life changing paradigm shifts.......2007-02-21
I first saw the DVD, which I recommend watching first and using the book to supplement. Eldredge offers three versions in DVD set--a short 37 minute version, an hour long version, and a small group study version that is just over 1 1/2 hours with commentaries if you watch all 6 parts at once. I highly HIGHLY recommend that the first time you watch it, you go ahead and commit to watching the study version all the way through in one sitting. I got several life-changing insights and they keep coming. After seeing the DVD, I wanted more and read the book. While the book doesn't have quite the same impact, it does offer a little more information.
I've been a Christian for 30 of my 36 years and this DVD (and book) impacted me more than any sermon I've heard.
The Prologue sets up the format. He presents the gospel as an epic--a story and gives us a larger view of Christianity and where we fit into it. It's SOOO not all about us, yet we are a valuable part of it, we have our role to play.
The first "Act" is Eternal Love. It made me see God's nature more clearly. Yes, God is love, as we have all heard. But understanding the Trinity love relationship helped lay a foundation for the overall insight of We can trust the heart of God. That we are invited into something good that already exists and offers a sense of belonging to something greater.
The second act "Entrance of Evil" reminded me that sometimes I forget and see the world (and thus God)as if there weren't a villian. I also see how his biggest lie (You can't trust the heart of God) was being perpetuated long before creation. It was effective with the fallen angels and I fall prey to it sometimes myself.
The third act is where creation began and we currently are. I've heard (even occasionally taught) that God loves me innumerable times. While I knew in my head that this was unmistakeably true, I never experienced it like I did because of this. "The Passion of Christ" gave me a glimmer, but this much, much more so. The way Eldridge describes creation and us made in the Trinity's likeness (an echo) made me feel Psalms 139:13 like never before. I've struggled with feeling valuable and this insight offered a sense of security I've had a difficult time obtaining. Despite what we do (the she-camel verse struck my very heart), God still melts for us and pursues us, without force. Christ's life and death somehow seem more real to me. With love like this, I can trust the heart of God.
Act four talks about Heaven. NOT the typical (unfortunately) view of heaven and endless (i.e. boring) worship and praisefests. (Yes, we will worship God, but not just through song and church services in the sky) This presents a biblical view of heaven that really does sound like heaven. You really need to hear this, it's inspiring and exhilirating.
The Epilogue wraps it up and reasserts our place in the epic.
There isn't any way to convey all the ways or the degree how this DVD (and book) moved me and changed me. It's still happening. I find myself coming back to it again and again. I know Eldredge has written for men, I'm a woman and I don't think this is targeted just for men at all. I think it will speak most strongly to those who enjoy reading and movies a little more, just because he references so many. Each reference, if you're familiar with it, can evoke a feeling or situation in an instant that only adds to the message he is conveying. However, you don't have to know all the references to get an amazing amount out of it.
Good Sunday School Curriculum.......2007-01-04
I just completed teaching a Sunday School class using John Elderidge's Epic along with the DVD as a curriculum. The class was a cross generational men's group.
I must admit I was somewhat concerned about how this material would be received by the over 60 age group. My fears were unnecessay. The Epic served as a springboard for many good discussions. We discussed everything from relationships to the meaning of life. (You do encounter these topics when you ponder your role in the "Big" story.)
I was really blessed by the insights expressed by our group and came away with a greater appreciation for my seniors. The Epic also appealed to the younger members who could more easily relate to the media connections.
As some of the other reviews have pointed out, I agree that the Epic is not strongest work of scholarly theology. If this is your expectation then I would suggest you look elsewhere. If you are looking for a curriculum with broad appeal and is easy to teach this is just the ticket.

This book is the sequel to "Dinner with a Perfect Stranger." Whereas the first book involves Jesus speaking with a man, this one is Jesus' witnessing to the man's wife. Like him, she's not a Christian. Jesus slowly leads her where he wants her to go, always dealing with her in love. Jesus meets the woman on an airplane, where he also entertains the child ahead of him by making faces. Yes, I think Jesus would do that! Another wonderful book that shows witnessing done God's way. It's a book you'll want to keep.

I thought this book was an excellent follow-up/sequel to Dinner with a Perfect Stranger. As in the original...it is easy to read, thought-provoking, not bogged down or time consuming. Really, if you've read the first one...THIS is a MUST read as well!

My wife and I read this after reading _Dinner with a Perfect stranger_ and they both compliment each other. These books give some terrific insight into life's 'workings' and provide another viewpoint about love, life, religion that can be intimately identified with for each of us, although in a different manner for each.
It was a thouroughy enjoyable read.
Day With a Perfect Stranger.......2007-05-13
I found this book to be so very awesome in it's presentation, purpose and perspective. I got lost in the book and when I was finished it I felt a sense of loss; I would not have this literary "friend" to read each night before retiring.
David Gregory presented some very thought provoking ideas.
I passed it on to a friend who also gives this book a rave review.

They were not kidding, from head to toe its very good and kept my attention till the end. It has been of great help to me. Aside the history content it helps you to think on how to mitigate risk and how improve the opportunities.

Bernstein does an adequate job bringing the concepts together, but this is not a page-turner. I found myself reading on for the promise of insight, and he offers some, but the writing is a bit dull.

Bernstein is an interesting writer since he is the consummate finance insider- a practioner, regulator and academic. This range helps and harms the book - in his efforts to render the history of risk, he delves into anecdotal caricatures while amusing definitely smack of basis risk with the underlying ideas that are provocative enough! I found the behavioural finance and derivatives section to be rather basic but then realised the book was written in 1996. It's a pleasant read but a more pragmatic introduction to probability is the infinitely witty Cartoon Guide to Statistics.

2 crucial ponits in this book:
1.Sociological: Bernstein describes how risk was first imagined as an essentially modern cultural form and significantly operationalized in early mercantile capitalist shipping, where individual losses in rapidly expanding global trade become large enough to encourage their socialization in insurance arranegemnts. This book implies some viable if crude forms measurement and scaling of risk. In his narrative, risk was there waiting to be discovered, carrying its own intrinsic meaning, which the visionaries, through their heroic powers of access to msteries of Nature, were able to reveal to men of commerce and others who could then drive the economic, cultural and technological revolution of modernity. We can note from this account of risk how an implicit normative framework`and a claim of control are advanced as defining features of this new state`of enlightenment. It is this scientific risk discourse which gives total control`of `the future at the service of the present', the implication being that risk`analysis identifies and domesticates all significant future consequences of the`relevant actions. In this way ignorance and unanticipated consequences - lack`of control - lying beyond the reach of existing scientific knowledge, thus`potentially embarrassing in future to risk assessment, are seamlessly deleted.`Risk is thus assumed to define the full sphere of conceivable meaning for considering`new technologies and their implications, and science reveals this`independent meaning. Historical: While it is apparent to historians that both Khayyam and Kharazmi were Persian thinkers, the author in keen to be selective inattentive to this fact such that he argues the system of numbers were imported from Arab world to West whereas it was firstly introduced to Arabs at the time Persia was invaded by them. Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Rising With The Son: A Diary Of A Growing Soul
There is a larger story. John's epic tale of our own story as told in the gospels in a valuable tool for a clear and revealing understanding of why life is so darn hard! Biblically sound and written with a heart for the Lord, this is a great give away book for people who have lost trust in the Lord or curious about the Christian walk.
John's insight is clear and fresh and he delivers another home run with this short book. I recommend you go to his website and roll out the entire curriculum he offers in the DVD and workbooks! Go for it, and take your place in the battle.
Blasphemy.......2007-09-07
The third chapter of this book is of great offensive to me and dilutes any positive attitude I have for this book. In fact, I have little motivation to finish the book because the third chapter was so distasteful.
John Eldredge is fond of making analogies about the Christian faith by comparing Christianity to popular movies... popular filthy, vulgar, profane, immoral, and blasphemous movies!
John Eldredge does make some analogies with appropriate movies such as The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia. There are many appropriate stories he could make analogies with, which makes it even more shameful for him to compare Christianity to the likes of The Matrix, The Titanic, and Braveheart!
It all starts in chapter three where John Eldgredge compares God's creation of romance to scenes from Braveheart and the Titanic. It is blasphemous to say that God's version of romance is anything like what is depected in Braveheart or Titanic. Let me begin with Braveheart...
Braveheart is rated R for brutal violence, sexuality, nudity and mature themes. This fact alone should prevent Christians from comparing God's creation to Braveheart! John Eldredge refers to the beauty of God's creation of romance by comparing it to the relationship between William Wallace and his girlfriend... a relationship in which they have premarital sex in a scene involving nudity! This is sinful fornication and Christians should not be watching movies with these scenes. It's bad in and of itself... but to make it worse John Eldredge compares that to God's plan for romance in creation! This blasphemy drags down God's name!
In between Eldredge's Braveheart and Titanic analogies, he compares Christianity to the Matrix. Where do I start? The Matrix is a mix of multiple religions, which results in something clearly NOT Christian. Does the movie have Christian themes? So what? The movies are full of blasphemy, profanity, nudity, and sex. The Matrix does NOT glorify God. Eldridge compares Neo's awareness of the Matrix to Christians realizing that the world is under the dominion of Satan... huh? Eldredge even plays the "find the Jesus" game and compares Jesus' salvation work to Neo setting the Matrix free... The thought of comparing Jesus to Neo makes me gag.
Eldridge goes so far to say that Neo's "death and resurrection shatter the power of the Matrix, set the captives free." Neo's death is just like Jesus' death on the cross? NO.
The most offensive and disappointing part of this book is when John Eldredge compares our relationship with Christ to the relationship between Jack and Rose from the Titanic... their adulterous fornicating relationship! This analogy made me so upset that I don't want to finish reading the book. Eldredge calls Jack a "Hero" and a "Lover" who "lays down his life to rescue his Beloved". This makes me sick! Jack in the Titanic has an adulterous affair with an emotionally unstable engaged woman and has sex with her soon after meeting her, even drawing her nude in a scene that many CHILDREN saw when parents expected to be watching a PG-13 movie! This is what John Eldredge compares to our relationship with Christ? How can anyone justify this? Eldredge describes Rose as a "prisoner to a man she doesn't love," then supports Jack's actions by saying that his adulterous affair "rescued" Rose from an engagement she did not want to be part of. Huh? Rescuing her through adultery and fornication?
John Eldredge ends page 71 by quoting Rose: "He saved me in every way a person can be saved," referring to how Jack "saved" her by having a lustful, fornicating, adulterous affair with her. John Eldredge then makes the analogy that Christ saves in the same way! Are you serious!
That's not all of it. Consider this sentence from page 67: "The coming of Jesus of Nazareth was far more like the opening scenes of Saving Private Ryan." Are you kidding me? No! Jesus coming to the world compared to a world war 2 gun battle?
This blasphemous nonsense makes the whole book unbearable to read. If you disagree with me, please tell me how it glorifies God to make the analogies I explained above.
And if you think that it is OK to take "positive" aspects from wicked movies, then I ask you - Would you watch pornographic movies that have "good stories"? I thought so.

Eldredge begins this book with a quote from Chesterton: "I had always felt life first as a story--and if there is a story there is a story teller." With that as the backdrop, Eldredge claims that far too many Christians have lost their story, lost the narrative that gives meaning and purpose to their lives - and without the storyline, they are relegated to a role behind stage, out of the limelight of life, destined for insignificance and mediocrity. Eldredge claims that a life of mediocrity is not why God sent His only Son to die for mankind - there must be something more...there is something more!
In a book that feels like you're reading The Chronicles of Narnia, The Epic is a dive into the land of enchantment and mystery where there is a battle and you are a warrior. Eldredge paints the picture for the reader that the great cosmic struggle of the day is actually centered around each person - a battle for their heart and their mind - and, claims Eldredge, too many followers of Christ are relegated to sitting on the sidelines watching as others engage for the cause of Christ. For John Eldredge, the sidelines of life might was well be hell itself - clearly no place for the follower of Jesus Christ, a man of passion, a man of purpose, a man whose life bubbled over with meaning and transcendence - and if He is our model, what should the life of those who claim to be His follower look like? Nothing less, says Eldredge.
The Epic is a great read, very encouraging and powerful, but not for the faint of heart and not for the theologian looking for a biblical discourse on a particular doctrine - it is a book from the heart for the heart.

This is the BEST BEST BEST book in my opinion. Each page describes how the mama bear and daddy bear wanted a family, and they waited, and her belly grew bigger and they prayed each night for a healty baby, etc.. It's just such a great book. Each page ends with the phrase, "God Gave Us You!" When I read this book to my baby I point up her tummy to her nose each time I saw the 'God Gave us You' part and she always smiles.

This book I would recommend for young teens as well as adults. Anyone who has looked for love, but in all the wrong places, or anyone who is uncertain that they will ever find love at all; this book will comfort and guide you. Using scriptural backing, this books tells the reader how they must first love their heavenly King before they can every hope to find their earthly handsome prince.

I think the book is ok in that it offered new insight into my relationship with God that I was unaware of, and for that, I appreciate the book. However, as "the ultimate approach to guy/girl relationships," I don't think it was quite that. I think that they should have elaborated more on what is wrong with most current guy/girl relationships and talked about how we should approach these differently, both in the aspects of friendship and dating. The prime example would have been to use their own relationship as an example, which they did not. The reader just discovers one day (towards the end of the book) that they were friends who were not even considering marriage and the next thing you know, they're married. Maybe they elaborate more in their other books, but I am not buying those when stuff like that should have been explained in a book that is supposed to tell you the "ultimate approach to guy/girl relationships!" I think that their book titles should reveal that this is one couple's limited perspective because even the references of other people's experiences as examples do not tell you much.
Also, they seem somewhat limited in their experience and their thinking to be telling others how to correctly approach these relationships. In the aspect of loving yourself and growing closer to God, the book is good, but I don't really think it helps too much with relationships.
Another thing is the writing style was kind of a turn off to me, and I found it to be annoying. But I think that perhaps it may appeal to some people. It seems somewhat simple and patronizing, which immediately made me think this book was for high schoolers, but even when I was at that age, I still would have regarded it as too simple. Plus their humor did not appeal to me so they should try to keep that to a minimum in their future books. Honestly, they sounded as if they were young adolescents when they wrote this, and there is a difference between trying to appeal to a certain age group and sounding like you are from that age group.
Lastly, they should not paraphrase what is in the Bible. I actually did look up something they paraphrased and had a completely different understanding of it so I think they should write exactly what is in the Bible and then offer their perspective. Overall, I tried to get as much out of it as I could, but I would not want to buy another book written by them.

Shepherd as clear and crisp as when his storied craft was developing before our very ( and not so very) adolescent ears and eyes. There is something very archtypical in the Raulphie, Flick, The Old Man, Mom, Winnie Randie and the enevitable unobtainable Wanda Hickey that we all coveted and set our eyes on the reality of our own fragile and wonderful lifes!

This book took me back, an interesting assortment of characters who shaped the time(s) and town(s) we all grew up in. From the school yard bully to the nosey neighbor to the town oddities, they are all there. You'll remember things from that time that you thought you forgot.

New York-based writer Ralph Parker is sent back to his hometown of Hohman, Indiana, to write an article about small-town life. Instead, he winds up in a bar run by a childhood friend, trading stories and reminiscing about what it was like to grow up in Hohman during the Great Depression, warts and all. Most of you are probably already familiar with at least parts of this book, even if you don't realize it. Several of the stories in this book were pieced together to make the script for the classic movie A Christmas Story. Those stories are just as entertaining here in their original form.
But in addition to the stories of the Red Ryder BB Gun, Ralphie's battle with the school bully, and the tale of the Old Man's still legendary Major Award, Jean Shepherd provides us with over a dozen other stories of life in Hohman -- the trip to the top of Magic Mountain, Ralph's attempt to impress his teacher by writing a book report on the biggest book he can find and the climactic tale of a movie theater promotion gone wrong all come together to make this a truly wonderful book. I listened to Jean Shepherd on WOR radio when I lived in NJ. Jean was THE funniest personality I had/have ever heard. Stories about when he was a kid, when he was in the Army, all kinds of neat, funny stories.
When this book came out, I got an autographed copy in Newark, NJ one day, still have it too. Outstanding tales about youth in the "better days" of America! You will LOVE this book if you like "Christmas Story" on TV every year.

Bilquis Sheikh describes her journey, beginning with her initial interest in spirituality. She tells of her search for the truth, studying her Koran and the Bible she had requested, and struggling to know which book was God's. She humbled herself to visit a missionary to ask questions. She knew how to pray; prayer had been a ritual performed five times a day. However, she was startled by the new thought of praying to God as a father. In which of the two holy books was God a father? She decided to accept the Bible. She studied it, and began to spend time with the missionaries. She listened to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, and became convicted about so many things: baptism, her temper, her responses to other people. Christ gave her the strength to defy her family when they insisted she have nothing to do with Christians, as well as the courage to live calmly when her life was threatened. It was such a hard decision, even after she knew in her heart that she believed, and had become a Christian. Her family was close, and she enjoyed so many tender relationships cut off by her choice to follow Jesus. Her family, who had shared such love with her, even tried to kill her for rejecting Islam.
In this book, she chronicles this process. It is precious to see the Lord at work in hard places, like South Asia. We see that He is not limited, only we are. She also gives us insights into her own culture, and values of family and community which are remote from the individualism of the West. It is enlightening to glimpse into a Muslim family, and how she continued to live among her relatives after her conversion. Most of all, it is encouraging to read of another sister's journey to live before God in communion with Him as He has called us all to do. It brings reflection on our own lives, and the depth and closeness of our own relationship with our heavenly Father.
At the end of the book, there is an epilogue of Bilquis' life after the conclusion of the book. Then another perspective is added by Synnove Mitchell, the missionary to whom Bilquis first spoke about the Lord.
Written in an easy manner, this book can be read in an afternoon. Bilquis was open and honest about matters of the heart, and I did not find her to by dry at all. Who should read it? Those interested in this kind of conversion and culture, those wanting to know how God can be a Father, and Christians who want to understand this sister and those like her, and Christians who want to deepen their own relationship with our heavenly Father.
A Reminder of the Basic Truths.......2007-07-04
I'm trying to find the words, but the only thing that comes close is refreshing. At the time I read this, I was in a very dry place, but her tale planted a seed to allow God to raise me out of it.
It reminded me of the basic truths and just how complicated we make religion. The truth is God wants our obedience and through it all, he loves us unconditionally.

I first heard of this woman when she was on the 700 Club with Pat Robertson way back in the early 1980's. She was interviewed and told how she came to know Jesus, when God called her to come to Him. She had been the wife of a very important head of state, and she was well known and respected. She kept this part of her life a secret for a very long time as if she was found out they would have killed her. She tells about how God would take her out of body over to america or some other continent to pray for someone that was sick, and the return her later to her body. She was sold out to the Lord, and fell in love with Jesus, as we all must do, and He began to use her to win other souls, and to heal the sick. It is a touching testimony of God's Love for all, and how He longs for all to come to Him. God is Love.
Read this book, and you will be touched by the love of the Father.
True Account of a Muslim Woman Coming to Christ.......2007-02-14
Bilquis Sheikh was a traditional Muslim woman living in Pakistan during the 1960s. At the age of 52, after discontent with life she began examining the Koran in more depth to try to find greater purpose and hope for life. During her search, she noticed the prophet Jesus mentioned within the Koran and thought perhaps reading more on his teachings would be interesting.
As one who came from a well respected and wealthy family, she had many resources and servants at her beckon. She instructed one of the servants to obtain a Bible for her and began to read it. Though it was in a difficult to understand version of the Urdu language, she became intrigued and had a couple dreams relating to John the Baptist and Jesus. She had not read about John prior to her dreams. The dreams struct her so vividly that she had to learn more and so cautiously approached a local Christian missionary.
Over the next weeks and months, God revealed to her that the Jesus of the Bible was the true message of hope for life. She struggled tremendously with the decision to follow this Jesus of an aberrant religion and the implications of intense persecution/ostracization that she would experience if turning to Christ. However, she was continuously brought back to being at peace when dwelling on the things of the Bible and when she talked with God as if He were her father.
