Simple and Effective.......2007-08-01
This is a simple book and very stupid one, But I am sure 90% of sales persons and business people do not even impliment these simple ideas.
Learn from Google Simplicity and its effectivness !
This book gives you simple ideas which they will bring you SALES easily.
Sales Manual.......2007-07-24
This book gives detailed guidance on how to sell. Not a fuzzy, rah-rah guide, like many are, but with pointed and specific directions. It emphasizes hard work, preparation, application and discipline as keys to being successful, a Rainmaker. Some of the do's and don'ts border minutia but the author conveys the directness of purpose every sales person should maintain. It focuses on industrial sales environments where return on investment and cost vs. value are measurable. It's an easy read and should be read by every sale person who wants to get ahead. Even if you don't obey all the rules, you can pick up useful tools.
Easy read, great ideas!.......2007-07-15
This is a very easy read chock full of terrific sales ideas and techniques. Even if you're an experienced salesperson, this book will help you remember some of the small, but excellent points to being a terrific salesperson.
Hone Your Craft!.......2007-05-02
Thank you Jeffery Fox for writing a short concise work that sales professionals can use as a reality check to focus their attention on the selling process. Rainmaker is something you can refer to for brief reminders about what you should be doing during the selling process. The book is also available as an unabridged audio book. It is a great tool for sales professionals who want to hone their craft. If you only buy the book for "The Rainmakers Credo" and "the Customer Does Not Care About You" you will have gotten value. This is not a 300-page in depth how to sell book. If your looking for that try Jeffrey Gitomer's "Sales Bible".

Customer Reviews:
Solid, Fundamental Advice to Grow Your Business.......2007-09-08
I've read a number of Jeff Fox's books, and they've all been worthwhile reading. However, as someone focused primarily on bringing in new business on a regular basis (I am a 20-year veteran of the Financial Services industry), I can attest to the fact that this is Fox's best volume thus far.
"Secrets of Great Rainmakers," like Fox's other books, is written in an easy-to-read style with short chapters that get straight to the point - fast. There's no excess drivel used as filler. My copy is now highlited to the max, and I'll refer back to it with regularity.
Even after 20 years in a sales-related career, I'm smart enough to know that I certainly do not know it all; I'm constantly learning. This book is a welcome addition to that learning process. Very, very highly recommended.
Great Reading.......2007-08-23
This is the second Jefferey J Fox book I've read, and it's as a good as the first. Great real-world examples. Easy to read. I highly recommend everyone read it.
Another good rainmaker book!.......2007-05-12
I love all of the Rainmaker books by Fox. Easy to read, not boring, bottom line and to the point. This one repeats alot of what is in "How to be a Rainmaker", which I found to be better than this book. If you only buy one, but "How to be a Rainmaker". You won't need this one if you do.
Crazy like a fox.......2006-08-17
Mr. Fox's books are straight to the point. He doesn't spend a lot of time trying to help you decide if you want to be a Rainmaker, he just tells you how to do it. By learning to use killer questions and dollarize you can get what you want. I am not in sales directly, but have applied the techniques to move on in my career.
Useful stuff, much of what you won't find elsewhere!.......2006-06-10
HOW TO BECOME A RAINMAKER by Jeffrey J. Fox is one of my
all-time favorite books on selling . . . if you're in that field or know
somebody who is, do that person a big favor and get him or her a
copy . . . they'll be forever grateful.
I recently heard the follow-up, SECRETS OF GREAT
RAINMAKERS--written and read by Fox . . . for this latest effort,
he conducted over 50 interviews with industry leaders from a
variety of field . . . .he then shares what he learned in a series
of short chapters that all contain very powerful messages.
The amazing thing about Fox is that he takes what can be
a difficult task and makes it relatively simple, provided that
you listen to his advice . . . what makes it so interesting is
that much of what he shares can't be found elsewhere.
For example, he tells you not to knock your competition . . . for
if you do, you're telling your customer that he or she is stupid for
considering somebody else.
He also presents "killer questions" that can be helpful in selling
anything, such as:
* In addition to yourself, who is responsible for making this decision
happen in your country? And what might be their concerns about
going ahead?
* [when a customer has a question] Why do you ask? And how
important is it to you?
There were many other memorable tidbits, including:
* In a sales call, the customer should do 80% of the talking.
* Play Rolodex Roulette at least once a month. Give it a spin,
pick some names, call some of them.
* Always use an intriguing postscript.
* The phone call never sells anything.
* Only after you get the order can you ask a non-business question.
* 90% of salespeople don't ask for the order.
* Always ask for something on a visit; e.g., a tour of the facility. If you're
the one being asked to take a tour, that's a buy signal.
* Take handwritten notes on every call. Then summarize your notes in
a follow-up letter to the customer.
* Don't mail your proposal. A good proposal, well written, has a 15-18%
winning percentage. Good proposals, when presented in person, have
a 55-65% winning percentage.
* People who ask for the sale in person have four times the chance of
getting it than those who don't.
And my personal favorite:
* In the future, some power point presenter will be arrested for boring
the customer to death!

Michael Beck (The Golden Seal, Xanadu), who seems to be making a career out of reading books on audio (A Time to Kill, The Runaway Jury), has returned with John Grisham's The Rainmaker, bringing the backwoods of Tennessee's legal world to life. His sultry, southern drawl animates the world of Rudy Baylor, an out-of-luck, budding lawyer who has more things going against him than bedraggled, disaster-magnet Joe from Lil' Abner. The law firm that hired Baylor was gobbled up by a larger firm just three weeks before his graduation, and now he has no job and no chance of finding one. To make matters worse, when he gets home there's an eviction notice, a process server, and a lawsuit waiting for him. What's a bumbling baby-lawyer to do? Get a case and some cold hard cash--fast. Baylor stumbles upon two possible jackpots: A tight-lipped widow with millions squirreled away and a young man whose life is cut short by a negligent insurance company. Baylor gets in over his head and finds himself up against a pack of superpower attorneys; losing could cost him his life and winning would make him a rainmaker cum laude. Grisham's knack for making tedious legalities interesting, coupled with Beck's gift for shifting in and out character like a Mercedes roadster, makes for an exciting, entertaining listen. Running time: 360 minutes.
Amazon.com Audiobook Review
The supple voice and deft narrative skills of Frank Muller are an excellent match for this tremendously popular courtroom thriller. With subtle vocal changes, accents, and thoughtful interpretation, Muller helps elevate the drama and suspense of this fascinating tale, which pits a small-time rookie lawyer against the power and influence of a corrupt insurance company. Muller's talent gives life to the entire cast: from apathetic law students to slippery corporate lawyers and heartbroken senior citizens. "It's simple... they're a bunch of crooks," exclaims the young lawyer's first clients, an elderly couple bitter over being swindled. "They think we're simple, ignorant trash with no money to fight 'em." Battling his instinct to agree, he sets out to defend their rightful claims and finds himself enmeshed in a suspenseful case of ruthless intimidation and deadly criminal behavior. (Running time: 17 hours, 12 cassettes) --George Laney
Book Description
John Grisham's five novels -- A Time To Kill, The Firm, The Pelican Brief, The Client, and The Chamber -- have been number one best-sellers, and have a combined total of 47 million copies in print. Now, inThe Rainmaker, Grisham returns to the courtroom for the first time since A Time To Kill, and weaves a riveting tale of legal intrigue and corporate greed. Combining suspense, narrative momentum, and humor as only John Grisham can, this is another spellbinding read from the most popular author of our time.
Grisham's sixth spellbinding novel of legal intrigue and corporate greed displays all of the intricate plotting, fast-paced action, humor, and suspense that have made him the most popular author of our time. In his first courtroom thriller since A Time To Kill, John Grisham tells the story of a young man barely out of law school who finds himself taking on one of the most powerful, corrupt, and ruthless companies in America -- and exposing a complex, multibillion-dollar insurance scam. In hs final semester of law school Rudy Baylor is required to provide free legal advice to a group of senior citizens, and it is there that he meets his first "clients," Dot and Buddy Black. Their son, Donny Ray, is dying of leukemia, and their insurance company has flatly refused to pay for his medical treatments. While Rudy is at first skeptical, he soon realizes that the Blacks really have been shockingly mistreated by the huge company, and that he just may have stumbled upon one of the largest insurance frauds anyone's ever seen -- and one of the most lucrative and important cases in the history of civil litigation. The problem is, Rudy's flat broke, has no job, hasn't even passed the bar, and is about to go head-to-head with one of the best defense attorneys -- and powerful industries -- in America.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Good Story.......2007-09-09
I enjoy reading John Grisham novels and as with his other novels, I really enjoyed the characters in this book. This was a very good book to read and I loved the story, but didn't love the ending, hence the reason for the 4 stars. However, if you enjoy Grisham novels, I would recommend this book to read.
Completely illogical, yet somehow enjoyable.......2007-09-02
Like most Grisham books, this is a simple book that requires no thought or effort to get into. No wonder he is so popular.
There are no plot twists. Pretty much everything falls Rudys way. Not once is he tripped up in court. The case is so cut and dried that someone who doesn't know what he is doing can win it with no effort. This is problem one with the book. Where is the drama?
The second problem is that both Rudy and the Blacks repeatedly claim that they are not suing for the money, but for the principle, and Rudy wants to put them out of business. So after he does this, but gets no money, both Dot and Rudy are upset.
Just as bad is Kelly, the typical beaten wife who deserves no sympathy because she seems to want to get beat. No one intelligent would get involved with this train wreck, no matter how hot she may be. The ridiculous part of this story line is how Rudy takes her back to get clothes. No lawyer would allow her to go to his house without police escort, this is nonsense! Then of course, he lets her gets arrested, and apparently the police are too incompetent to investigate it properly, so she walk in like two days.
The worst is that at the end Rudy decides to never practice law again. This pretty much comes out of nowhere and is based on the fact he lost out of 33% of $50 million, even though it was never about the money. Huh?
Despite all these major problems, I still liked the story. I am still not sure why, but I can't give this book the 1 or 2 stars it deserves. I can't believe people give this McBook 5 stars. He is the fast food of fiction. Grisham has always been a decent storyteller, too bad he has absolutely no concept of drama and plot twists.
One of the best ever!.......2007-08-17
I am actually surprised a Grisham book is going to make my Top 5 list of all time favorites. Oh, but it is. This was a fantastic book. The characters and plot were so well developed, it was really tough putting this book down. The story is typical Grisham. A young lawyer graduates from Memphis State. He has no money and no job. In order to make ends meet, he is forced to work for the sleaziest lawyer in town. But he takes with him a case against an insurance company that, if he gets lucky, could mean millions in punitive damages. His luck is not in his favor when the sleazy lawyer disappears and leaves Rudy and a paralegal named Deck, to start up an office of their own and take the case against one of the toughest law firms in Memphis. Grisham does the layman justice by explaining law in a way anyone can understand. I always take something away from a Grisham book. The action does not stop until the end of this one. And I have to say I was surprised but definitely satisfied with the ending. A must read!
A terrific Story.......2007-08-03
I have read just about every book by John Grisham and except for "The Client" and "The Chamber" I have enjoyed all of them. The main character, Rudy, in The Rainmaker gave me a laugh or too which was nice. The hardships that he encounters throughout the book are real-life experiences that any reader could identify with; bankruptcy, unemployed, homeless, and the list goes on. Overall, this was a fantastic novel and I would recommend it to all readers.
if only all Grisham's novels were this good..........2007-06-11
Rudy Baylor hasn't even passed the bar yet. but he's about to get the case of a lifetime. Insurance company Great Benefit has committed a possible malpractice in repeatedly denying the claims of Donny Ray Black, a 21-year old suffering from severe leukemia who doesn't have very long at all to live. Not only will they not recognize their claims, but they won't pay out any insurance money for Donny Ray to get treatment. Somehow, this case falls into Rudy's lap, and he's determined to get these people the settlement they deserve. But since he's been fired from two different law firms in the span of about a month, he's a bit strapped for luck- not to mention cash. Soon, not only does he have to deal with the rigors of a trial that has caught national attention, but he also has to haggle with an aging landlord who views Rudy as her own personal lawn workhorse, a boss with less than scrupulous business practices, and a young beautiful woman who has fallen hopelessly in love with him- and has a brutally abusive husband to boot. If Rudy ever feels in over his head, it's probably because he is!!
The Rainmaker is to me Grisham's best novel yet. It's the only novel from Grisham that I've ever been able to laugh out loud at (which I did in multiple parts) and even cry at (although I do admit I was ecstatic when Rudy killed Cliff, Kelly's abusive husband; he's the only character in the novel I wanted to see murdered, at least similar to the way he treated Kelly. So yes, I was happy when he got offed). If only Grisham's other novels were this good, I'd be reviewing them like this one: only five hours after I finished the last page.

Bring on the Rain.......2007-03-30
Excellent Book! I highly recomend it to all financial planners who would like to increase their access to the high net worth crowd.

This book cuts through all the bs! If you are serious about your business and are tired of all the gimicky marketing ideas we constantly hear about, then this book is for you. Matt Oechsli concisely puts together a great road map to take you where you want to go. He definitely has his pulse on what the High Net Worth are looking for (and more importantly...what they are NOT looking for). This was a real eye openner for me.
20-Year FInancial Services Veteran's Take: Great Investment.......2007-03-04
I've been in Financial Services for 20+ years, and I'm still interested in increasing my business each year. As you might imagine, when one's been in the industry this long, they see every imaginable book, pitch, idea, etc. regarding how to bring in affluent clients - and I have.
This is the best book written on the subject - period.
I'll give you a few reasons why. First of all, it gets right to the main point: bringing in 10+ affluent clients ($1 million of investable assets) each year. For most in the industry, this is a more-than-acceptable goal.
Second, it provides detailed, sensible and logical ideas to achieve that end. The book goes into the psychological issues that one must address to garner this level of success, and it also details the actions and regular activities that must be undertaken on a day-to-day basis.
I will certainly be re-reading this book a second time, this time with hilighter in hand. The book will then remain in my office for quick, easy reference.
I've known of Matt Oechsli for many years because he's a regular contributor to a trade publication that those of us in the industry receive. Now, for the first time, I've stepped beyond his monthly articles to see how really good he is.
Worth every penny, this book will yield a fabulous R.O.I for those who follow its tenets. Strongly recommended.

This book has some good things but the links to resources are very outdated. A good deal of them either don't exist anymore or are something other than what is indicated.
Successful Strategies for Real Estate Marketing.......2005-08-03
I am new in the real estate industry and I know that I will be using ideas from this book in my first direct marketing campaign. The case studies were fantastic.
This book helps you build a business............2005-06-18
.... which as a realtor, you are! Dan Gooder is as much a real estate expert as he is a marketing expert. Let me first mention that I'm a RE newbie. So I know first hand that most first year realtors blow it, because they don't realize they are building a business. I've read everything. Forget the ridiculous like giving away pumpkins. This book is a comprehensive plan. Yes, be prepared to spend money. But try starting any other business without spending it.

Rainmaker's Handbook -- worth getting if you're in business.......2004-08-11
Comprehensive, well-organised guide for creating better results in a business -- not just professional services. I enjoyed his clear writing style and the easy-to-follow layout. A good read that stands out in a crowded field.
Get Your Umbrella.......2004-06-16
Mills' book is part text, part workbook and all value.
If you ever thought you could benefit from the services of marketing consultant, stop and read this book first.
MIlls' 8 R's model for Client Relationship Marketing is a thoughtful and systematic approach that can be applied by individual consultants or service firms as a whole. The model is practical, proven and easy to apply. You just add the effort.
The book is well laid out, with plenty of practical tools you can put to use immediately. This book won't stay on your shelf for long. It'll be on your desk ready for repeated use.
Michael McLaughlin, coauthor with Jay Conrad Levinson of Guerrilla Marketing for Consultants.
The Rainmaker's Toolkit holds the answer!.......2004-04-30
I read this book hoping to pick up a few practical tips on how to win more profitable clients. As a result, The Rainmaker's Toolkit far exceeded my expectations. Within it is a revolutionary seven step marketing system on how to build a successful and profitable business. I then passed the name of the book onto several of my colleagues whom then went out, bought a copy and found it to be equally impressive. I highly recommend this for anyone wishing to find a road-map that outlines how to create profitable growth. I highly recommend this book! Harry Mills is a superb writer.
professional service firm tool.......2004-04-07
Professional service firms are notoriously poor at marketing. The odd dynamics of partnerships as a business model coupled with the idiosyncracies of individuals within them make marketing hardwork. How do you get all partners to buy-in? What strategies do you use to make everyone an effective contributor? Harry Mills latest book cuts straight to the chase. Straight forward practical procedures. We are using them and they are working. As the principal of a mid-sized responsible for marketing I highly recommend this book to other lawyers and professional service firms.
An Excellent Book for the Service Provider.......2004-03-12
If you provide a service, this is a must-read --- especially if you don't have a lot of background in how to develop your business and how to get and keep the best clients.
It is, however, not just for people new to this sort of thing. It is an excellent manual for those who have been in business a long time.
Some of the material may be old hat. But there are gems in the book which make it worth the price and worth your time. It is written in a similar vain of Harry Beckworth books, which are very popular.
The book is a fast-read and well laid out.
Highly recommended.

Good info for designing a Financial Planning practice.......2006-12-11
As a Registered Investment Advisor planning my own Financial Planning practice, this book was an excellent source of marketing data and potential marketing strategies.
Based upon survey data with significant sample sizes, the best way to land high net worth clients is through their lawyers first, and accountants second.
I enjoyed the alternative methods for encouraging lawyers.....and/or accountants to refer high net worth clients to financial planners.
All-in-all a good source of marketing strategy information for financial planning professionals.
Book was easy to read and written well.
High net worth investors might enjoy the book, in order to understand the various marketing strategies and relationships between financial planners, lawyers, and accountants.

Rainmakers function better in a forest.......2004-08-23
By thinking of Rainmakers as separate from the organization, the firm severely limits its potential and actual benefits from the rainmaker's efforts. This book is valuable for training potential rainmakers, but probably more useful in helping the firm to understand what the rainmaker is doing, why and how they can help. By focusing the energy of the firm on rainmaking, a much more powerful force will be generated to serve existing clients and encourage new business. This book provides a good basis for creating this new synergy for the firm.
Who doesn't need a little rain?.......2004-01-16
I am the author of the book Futures For Small Speculators and Single Stock Futures For Small Speculators as well as the president of Liverpoolgroup.com.
Our focus is in the futures, commodities, and option business. We trade oil, cattle, gold, currency etc. And each one of our employees is an "independent" contractor. The problem with that is the fact that often times this very independent entrepreneurial group has a hard time working together to develop client relationships.
Everyone is competing against everyone else. There is little to no synergy or teamwork.
This book showed me MANY examples of how to guide and direct the individuals of the group to be more cooperative with one another and how to help them make more money. I was astonished that I was doing somethings right, but the things that I was doing right were being negated by the actions I was doing wrong. Over and over again Mr.Harding says that rainmakers get in their own way when it comes to training other potential rainmakers and he is right! If I had not read this book I would have lost some valuable members of my team due defection.
This is a great book and was a joy to read. One reading is not enough. This book must be read three to four times with a highlighter and a notepad- so you can write down the numerous ideas that will occur to you as you read the book. Then keep this book as a reference that you can go back to time and time again.
The ONE Guide to Read.......2002-06-18
Of all the books available on business development in the professions, this is the best of the best. Concise, practical yet never simplistic, Ford Harding hits the strategic issues of business development, then ties the issues to solid implementable actions. As an advisor to CPA and law firms, I consider this book to be the "course textbook" for learning the subject matter quickly. Professionals don't have time for volumes of thick how-to manuals. Give it to them straight and quickly. This book does that. Every page unlocks another important concept in business development. When finished the reader not only knows the subject, but knows what to do next. Instead of throwing the book in a cabinet, it should be kept in a handy place, and as the professional becomes more experienced, it can take him/her to the next level of understanding, and to the highest reaches of successful rainmaking. A must read for any professional who wants to grow their practice.
A bible for the training of business development staff........1999-11-07
I used this book in the planning of a training program for business development activities at the engineering/surveying firm, Psomas and Associates. We needed a training program for every level of staff from principals to marketing support staff. This book was amazing! It made the job sooooooo much easier! The information in this book was nothing short of inspiring and the success we are having in the program is testimony to the quality of the ideas and programs described in the book. I recommend it very, very highly!
A fascinating and thought-provoking book.......1999-04-16
I am a consultant in a company which does not have an organised rainmaker system (yet). As such, much of what I read in this book was new to me and I have discussed its contents with my boss. I think that this book will help us to improve our business. It is full of insightful ideas.
