This is an amazing book. It covers the major groups of recyclables. It shares facts, tells children how to prepare each item to recycle, and gives a comprehendable description of how they are made into new products. At the end it even gives children ideas of how they can help.

4 out of 5 stars Very informative and entertaining........1998-10-08

This book does a wonderful job explaining exactly how an item gets recycled. Its thought provoking and entertaining. The illustrations are wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Thankfully, this one is a keeper!.......2007-10-02

This book satisfies a child's natural curiosity about the everyday world around us. That garbage that we carry out in big plastic bags after raking the lawn, cleaning out the cellar, or tidying up the kitchen -- you just have to wonder where all this garbage ends up!

Diagrams, charts, graphs and cute illustrations will put kids in the know about dumps, landfills, recycling and preventing unnecessary waste to help the environment.

Well done volume on a timely subject.

5 out of 5 stars Every day Jobs that interest kids!.......2007-09-03

My son, like many curious 5 year olds, enjoys watching the Garbage Truck. And he loves to ask questions such as posed by the book's title, Where Does the Garbage Go?

As with most books I have seen in the Let's Read and Find Out Science series, it begins with a story to engage the child in the books primary theme. This one begins in a "traditional" classroom setting where the children learn all about garbage from their classroom teacher. It's a great conversation starter with a young child or group of children to ask them where they think the garbage goes.

In this book children will learn:

1. what garbage is (various types of garbage - yard waste, consumer waste, recycling etc.)

2. simple diagrams explain how an incinerator works, how glass, aluminum, paper and plastic is recycled

3. the process that transpires at a landfill, which includes bulldozers, compactors and dump trucks (a thrill for my son for sure)

4. practical ways to reduce our own garbage

5 out of 5 stars Recycle this one.......2007-01-10

My 4 year old grandson and I have lots of discussion on the things we learned in this book. Wonderfully done!

5 out of 5 stars Great informative book!.......2006-08-20

My 3 year old grandson loves this book. I bought it for him because he loves to watch the garbage truck come by every week. This book really taught him what happens to the garbage after pick-up.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to waste management for young children.......2006-03-22

This book is one of my collection for a Recycling education center. It is helpful because it breaks down the process of landfilling and recycling as well as shares what we throw away as Americans via a pie chart.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for Children, Parents and Teachers!!! .......2006-08-24

I was looking for a book to help get my children aware of our environmental problems, and help me teach them in a fun and exciting way! THIS IS IT! Easy workbook style. Easy Read, Fun projects that can be adapted to children of different ages! If you are teacher of young children, this book is a must! Help the young learn now and they will grow up into the next generation that will protect our earth! This book will definitely show children how they can start solving environmental problems right now!

5 out of 5 stars Teaching children to respect the Earth.......2002-07-20

Linda Schwarz, along with her illustrator Beverly Armstrong, has written an activity book for children on how to care for the earth. In simple format, she defines the basic terms and ideas used in environmental study. She then offers a number of activities for understanding these concepts. For example, she describes acid rain, then gives instructions for a project to measure the amount of acid in your own rainfall. This is a useful idea book for children's rainy day or school projects from about third grade on. In fact, this would be a handy reference book any of us could use for quick definitions and helpful illustrations. It could help us better make our points in conversations and community discussions about environmental problems and what we can do about them. (Originally reviewed in The Auroran)

4 out of 5 stars Great Source for Teachers!.......2001-04-22

This is a wonderful book for teachers to have for elementary age children when having a unit on Earth Day or celebrating Earth Day. Mainly it allows many different ways that children can help save the Earth. There are several sections of the book: Energy, resources, and recycling; Air, Land, & Water; Plant & Animal Habitat; and More Ways to Make Every Day Earth Day. Each of these sections provides simple facts and information while providing ways for children to help out or be actively involved in each particular topic. At the end of the book, there is a section called Where to Write & Glossary which provides a page on how to request for information and also provides many different resources/organizations that children can write to to obtain more information. I would definitely recommend this book for teachers to use for Earth Day units but also for children to read from if they are interested in helping save the Earth.

Book Description

Beginning with a short story appearing in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction in 1978, the publication of Stephen King's epic work of fantasy-what he considers to be a single long novel and his magnum opus-has spanned a quarter of a century.

Set in a world of extraordinary circumstances, filled with stunning visual imagery and unforgettable characters, The Dark Tower series is King's most visionary feat of storytelling, a magical mix of science fiction, fantasy, and horror that may well be his crowning achievement. In November 2003, the fifth installment, Wolves of the Calla, will be published under the imprint of Donald M. Grant, with distribution and major promotion provided by Scribner. Song of Susannah, Book VI, and The Dark Tower, Book VII, will follow under the same arrangement in 2004. With these last three volumes finally on the horizon, readers-countless King readers who have yet to delve into The Dark Tower and a multitude of new and old fantasy fans-can now look forward to reading the series straight through to its stunning conclusion. Viking's elegant reissue of the first four books ensures that for the first time The Dark Tower will be widely available in hardcover editions for this eager readership.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read Series.......2007-10-09

Roland is the last living member of a knightly order known as gunslingers. The world he lives in is quite different from our own, yet it bears striking similarities to it. Politically organized along the lines of a feudal society, it shares technological and social characteristics with the American Old West, as well as bearing magical powers and the relics of a highly advanced, but long vanished, society. Roland's quest is to find the Dark Tower, a fabled building said to either be, or be located at, the nexus of all universes. Roland's world is said to have "moved on," and indeed it appears to be coming apart at the seams -- mighty nations are being torn apart by war, entire cities and regions vanish from the face of the earth without a trace, time does not flow in an orderly fashion; even the sun sometimes rises in the north and sets in the east. As the series opens, Roland's motives, goals, and even his age are unclear, though later installments shed light on these mysteries.

This series was mostly inspired by the epic poem "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came" by Robert Browning, the full text of which was included in an appendix to the final volume. In the preface to the revised 2003 edition of The Gunslinger, King also identifies The Lord of the Rings, the Arthurian Legend, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly as inspirations. He identifies Clint Eastwood's "Man with No Name" character as one of the major inspirations for Roland. King's style of location names in the series, such as Mid-World, and his development of a unique language abstract to our own, are also influenced by J. R. R. Tolkien's work.

The Dark Tower is often described in the novels as a real structure, and also as a metaphor. Part of Roland's fictional quest lies in discovering the true nature of the Tower. The series incorporates themes from multiple genres, including fantasy fiction, science fantasy, horror, and western elements. King has described the series as his magnum opus; beside the seven novels that comprise the series proper, many of his other books are related to the story, introducing concepts and characters that come into play as the series progresses.

4 out of 5 stars Moving along..........2007-09-30

Now that the new characters are introduced and the party has gathered, we're actually starting on the quest for the Dark Tower! This one ends in a cliffhanger so now I have to read the next book! It's close, but not quite 5 stars yet. I'm still just barely able to put it down when I need to.

5 out of 5 stars Another great book!.......2007-08-24

I read this novel in exactly two days and I finished it yesterday. It rocks! Stephen King's The Dark Tower series is great. If you liked the first two, then pick this book up and give it a go. You'll love it. I am currently reading part four and I will review it when I am done.

3 out of 5 stars Blaine the Pain.......2007-06-29

After an amazing second book, the Dark Tower Series takes a nose dive back down. The adventure continues, but the action in this book is dismal. We find that Jake returns, finds a friend, gets captured, and then is saved. Blaine the Mono throws out his version of the Hobbit riddles. Then, in the end; wait, there isn't an ending. You know how you hate it when a weekly TV series throws "To be continued" on the screen. Well, expect to feel that way at the end of this book.

In the revised and updated edition of Lean Thinking: Banish Waste and Create Wealth in Your Corporation, authors James P. Womack and Daniel T. Jones provide a thoughtful expansion upon their value-based business system based on the Toyota model. Along the way they update their action plan in light of new research and the increasing globalization of manufacturing, and they revisit some of their key case studies (most of which still derive, however, from the automotive, aerospace, and other manufacturing industries).

The core of the lean model remains the same in the new edition. All businesses must define the "value" that they produce as the product that best suits customer needs. The leaders must then identify and clarify the "value stream," the nexus of actions to bring the product through problems solving, information management, and physical transformation tasks. Next, "lean enterprise" lines up suppliers with this value stream. "Flow" traces the product across departments. "Pull" then activates the flow as the business re-orients towards the pull of the customer's needs. Finally, with the company reengineered towards its core value in a flow process, the business re-orients towards "perfection," rooting out all the remaining muda (Japanese for "waste") in the system.

Despite the authors' claims to "actionable principles for creating lasting value in any business during any business conditions," the lean model is not demonstrated with broad applications in the service or retail industries. But those manager's whose needs resonate with those described in the Lean Thinking case studies will find a host of practical guidelines for streamlining their processes and achieving manufacturing efficiencies. --Patrick O'Kelley

Book Description

Expanded, updated, and more relevant than ever, the bestselling business classic by two internationally renowned management theorists shows how companies of any size in any industry can seize opportunities in the post-bubble economy.

Lean Thinking begins by helping listeners to identify value, asking, "What does the customer really want?" instead of "What can we try to convince the customer to accept?" Lean thinkers then identify the value stream -- every step required to move a specific good or service from initial concept into the hands of the customer -- for each product and ask if each step really creates value. Those that don't -- the great majority -- are then removed, and the remaining steps are conducted in continuous flow at the pull of the customer, as the firm manages toward perfection. As a consequence, lead times, costs of all sorts, and defects shrink, while responsiveness to customer needs and selling prices increase.

In an economic downturn, many companies are searching desperately for a sustainable formula for renewed growth and success. Lean Thinking is that formula -- a proven blueprint and specific action plan that will help any company stabilize its position and grow steadily while better serving its customers, employees, suppliers, and investors.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting book but very dull........2007-08-27

I found this book to be interesting, but I hard trouble finishing it because the writing was so boring. Despite the dullness the book did get me thinking of product in a different way.

5 out of 5 stars Womack and Jones, very engaging........2007-08-26

Lean Thinking- A very well written account of a long study of the theory of customer driven value thinking. The elimination of waste in accomplishing customer driven trade is the main goal of this theory. The book has been tuned over a series of revisions, so it is well polished. While I am no expert on the topic, I can at least attest to the fact that the volume is well written and referenced. Their views are spread over a period of many years, giving them the benefit of tracking case study performance over the long term. Companies both large and small have been studied and tracked to determine the benefits of these theories.

4 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny.......2007-07-30

A most readable book on an important subject of productivity. The comment on outsourcing is insightful and the emphasis on human element is so crucial. Productivity is not all about bigger and better machines but about management and employee been willing to take risks to think out of a box. Mr. Womack has made a significant contribution to the on-going dicussion of productivity in a globalized world.

5 out of 5 stars My husband loved it.......2007-04-10

My husband loved this book so much that this was actually purchased as a gift for another man in his office.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book with Detailed Lean Conversion Techniques .......2007-02-01

This book provides many case studies of companies outside of the auto industry that converted to lean production. It details the personnel changes they had to make, changes in factory layout, differences in the supply chain and much more. Where "The Machine that Changed the World" was a primer to lean production, "Lean Thinking" is more of a how-to book. Together, they make a great pair and provide a fairly in-depth view of the subject. As in, "The Machine that Changed the World", there is plenty of hard data to back up the claims that these companies improved after switching to lean thinking.

I am a college student majoring in mechanical engineering and read this book and "The Machine that Changed the World" to get a broad understanding of lean production. The two books did just that and even gave me many ideas on how to convert a student organization I am involved with (SAE) to more of a lean organization. As much as possible anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Laurie Carlson is Outstanding.......2005-02-17

I have just entered the field of preschool and was disappointed in the books for activities until I found Carlson. Her book isn't full of kiddie graphics as if the kids were reading, her instructions are clear and careful. This book is fun because it gives so many ideas of using things around the house. I liked this book so much that I bought 50 to give to preschool teachers coming to a workshop. If you like to do things with your young children and someone doesn't give you Carlson's books, buy them.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for many fascinating projects........1998-10-08

This book is filled with explicit instructions on many facinating projects. It is clear, concise and easy to understand. Excellent resource for children and teachers.

5 out of 5 stars Practical instruction and insightful comments-Super!!!!.......1998-04-28

Laurie, I just finished this book and I really appreciated it. My daughter is soon to be three and I have been wanting to learn more about environmentally friendly ways to teach her about life and our world. This is a super resource for me. Thank you so much!!

    Book Description

From systems for cottages to year-round systems with micro-flush toilets and graywater gardens, the wide range of ecological recycling toilet options are featured in The Composting Toilet System Book.

More than 40 systems—including those you can buy and those you can build—are featured.

Composting toilet systems and other ecological wastewater management methods are increasingly installed in both seasonal and year-round homes, as municipalities require systems that won't pollute the environment and drinking water. This book details why—and how to choose, install and maintain them.

You'll also find profiles of owner-operators worldwide, regulatory information for every state, compatible toilet stools (waterless, micro-flush, foam- and vacuum-flush and urine-diverting), a chapter on graywater systems, information about health risks and handling, and sources for many off-the-shelf and DIY designs.

[IMPORTANT NOTE: This book is written to be regulator friendly to make getting local permits for a system easier.]

If you are seeking to install a system that meets state codes or if you are simply seeking to make your own system, this book is for you. Stop polluting and start recycling and saving water today!

5 out of 5 stars Most complete and credible book on the topic.......2003-01-04

After reading a couple of books about composting toilets and graywater systems that were either suspiciously poetic or a little too humorous, I was happy to find this book.

As someone who needs a variety of systems for a variety of high-use sites, I was glad to find a book that deals with this topic in technically and responsibly (in terms of public health). I showed this book to my local health agent, and he was far more amenable to permiting an "experimental system" afterwards, saving me a lot of money.

Also, after experimenting with various systems over the years, I am aware that some systems still described in books and magazines just don't work well. The authors of this book have apparently had the same experience, and I appreciate their researching this so completely.

4 out of 5 stars The best book out there.......2002-11-15

I would venture that the authors have forgotten more about toilets than most of the rest of us will ever know. There is no possible toilet configuration that does not receive at least cursory discussion. I only have 2 complaints about the book, both of them minor. First there were a couple of systems that I felt were described incompletely and critiqued a bit unfairly. Second, much of the book seemed to be a compilation of other writings without a lot of editing. Consequently there is significant repetition, and a presentation of information that is sometimes slightly disorganized and confusing.

I definitely think that the book is worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive, comprehensive, reader friendly, practical........2000-04-06

The Composting Toilet System Book is an impressive, comprehensive, reader friendly, and practical guide to choosing, planning and maintaining composting toilet systems for those seeking an alternative to traditional sewer and septic tank systems. David Del Porto and Carol Steinfeld collaborate to explain the technologies, sources, applications, graywater issues, and regulations relevant to a composting toilet system for the home, whether manufactured or site-built. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Composting Toilet Book.......2000-01-01

Del Porto's book is the definitive composting toilet book at this time. There is nothing even close. His book covers all aspects of composting toilet systems and touches on graywater issues as well. He treats the composting toilet as part of the home system. If a person is seriously interested in installing/having a composting toilet, this book can save him/her all of the mistakes people usually make. He even (carefully) explodes some of the advertising myths that the purveyors of composting toilets would have us believe. The book covers ready-made systems as well as home built sytems. As trite as this sounds, the book truly is a must for someone considering intstalling composting toilet.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book to read while your sitting on the pot........1999-05-13

This book was well worth the wait. Whether you want to buy a system, or build one, if it's not covered in this book, then chances are it doesn't exist. It covers wet and dry toilets, self-contained composters and also cental units. What I like about this book is that it discusses the pros and cons of each type of design in a very straight forward manner. The authors did a very nice job on this book. If you ever plan on, or are even thinking about a compost toilet system, buy this one now. I leave my copy on my coffee table for guests, it always stirs up a conversation. No sh_t....

3 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE! Check with the seller first!.......2006-11-09

I was excited to get this book as I love to recycle stuff and make new stuff. But when I got the book in the mail (which even used, I paid over 20 dollars for including shipping) it was missing the clear templates. And of course, without the templates, you can not use the book. The seller who I purchased it from did not mention the missing templates in the item description and I assumed that if it wasn't mentioned, everything would be there as expected. That is the problem with these large warehouse-type online stores; they have so much inventory and most of the time, they don't even know when a product doesnt have everything it should have in order to sell it. I am waiting feedback from the seller in regards to a refund but I'm now going to have to eat the cost to send it back, which is money out of my pocket. The book is great in theory and I can't wait to try it WHEN I can get a copy of the book WITH the templates. I'm now going to have to try other sellers and make sure to check and double check that when I repurchase that it DOES have the templates. If you are interested in the book, I would encourage you to do the same.

    1 out of 5 stars Missing templates.......2006-09-22

The subject of this book is how to create envelopes from printed materials using the plastic templates included in the back of the book. They were missing from the book I received. If the advertisement for the book had stated the templates were missing I would not have purchased this book, because without them the book is useless.

    4 out of 5 stars Price inflation.......2006-06-30

I received this book as a gift, and it is one of my favorites. HOWEVER - could someone please explain why a book issued in
1995 at a cost of $19.95 is currently priced from $44.00 to $50.00??

4 out of 5 stars great but not for what they are charging..........2006-06-21

I just noticed that they are wanting over $40 for this book. I like this book BUT it is just a beginner book on this subject and not worth $40. The book has envelope templates but you can get templates FREE on the net. Otherwise this book is just "eye candy". If you saw Ms. Harvey on HGTV then you pretty much saw what is in her book.

So unless you can get it for $15 or under I'd say skip it.

    3 out of 5 stars A bit basic.......2005-02-21

This is an ok book. If you have envelope templates already then I'd say pass on this book because the text isn't that novel. There just isn't much to it......select a page from a magazine, plop the template down, draw around the shape of the template, cut it out and glue it up. Voila. I'm actually surprised the author was able to turn this topic into a book. It does have a few unique ideas like using special scissors like the deckle edge to cut out the envelope shape. It might be a good book for someone just starting to play around with templates and making envelopes. I was just looking for something for more advanced mail art.
