Book lives upto it's notariaty .......2007-08-10
This book was a hard read BUT it was written by one of the best there is. It is packed with all the information one will need for research on Freud and his beliefs. It is an excellent book to have, especially if you are a psychology major.
A Good Introduction and Reference.......2006-03-08
The Brill translation of the basic early writings of Sigmund Freud, although arguably not the most accurate translation, provides a good introduction to Freud's early work. We can read the critics and followers, yet sometimes we just have to go back to Freud's actual work. I keep my copy handy for reference and review.
Sigmund and soul. A myth to dream by...........2005-03-16
While Ms."Oph" and her "behavorist friend" spar in the ring of modern man's thought, let's take a break while the round card girl walks the ring counter-clockwise for all to see, admire, and lust after. I say at this stage of the contest Ms. Oph is clearly the better of the two; except for her spelling. Blinkers must certainly mean blinders; yes? At least she has the thread in hand; while our behavorist friend is still holding firm to his boyish literalisms and denied (I suspect) search for a god; or an anti-god if needs be.
Bah; humbug to it all. Freud was a novelist, a writer, a teller of tales. A mythologist, he admits it; sought after it. Dismiss those who helped form western man's thought? Forget it. Despite his human follies, which were certainly no greater or worse than yours or mine, the old man was brillant. As were his peers and adversaries; Jung and Adler. Each has something to offer if we listen. Should what we consider to be real and that which we consider unreal change costumes behind the theater's veil and then re-enter the stage, would we know?
Basic Writings of Freud by Brill.......2004-05-28
This is an excellent work for Freud enthusiasts. The work discusses the theoretical underpinnings for behavioral characteristics popularized by Freud. For instance, the proclivity to forget is related to a personal motivation to
suppress unpleasant memories. Dreams tend to depict unfulfilled wishes. Pain and disgust are more frequent aspects of dreams than pure pleasure. The author explains how childhood experiences both good and bad may resurface in our dreams. Our memory can be challenged to recall things long dormant. Night hallucinations can be due to perceived rejected sexual impulses.
Freud explains how seemingly contradictory thoughts can coexist side by side. The concept of psychological tension may be related to a displeasure or aversion. Freud discussed sexuality.
For instance, he noted that bisexual tendencies could be interpreted within the context of a female brain in a male body.
The book brings out many aspects of human behavior that we rarely dwell on consciously. It is perfect for a class project in
science, psychology or medicine. Freud's theories tend to be very
complex. This work reduces some of the deepest complexities to
simple English. Finally, the book helps us to understand the dynamics of why we behave as we do. This book explains important strategies to the classic flight/fight phenomena and accomodative
strategies aimed at reducing behavioral tensions/conflicts.
Review of Freud by an electrical engineer.......2004-01-26
As so many scientifically minded people our behaviourist friend below is quick to condemn literature one could view as decidedly outside the realm science after submitting it to a scientific reading. The great questions of sanity and the pathological must be considered to fall largely outside the domain of science. How one answers these questions have important ethical implications which are often obscured by the blinkers of science. You wish to treat mental illness? I will ask you, then, to what end? And let me suggest that if you attempt to answer that question with an appeal to science you do nothing but shirk from the ethical dimension of the question. Dismissing the question by declaring the answer self evident and therefore not in need of elaboration amounts to the same.
Serious, extensive, criticism can be levied at the scientific treatment of mental illness. For considerations of brevity I raise only the most obvious one: To draw scientific conclusions one needs measurable quantities, and their determination must be anything but scientific since it unfailingly requires a choice, which I maintain, is an ethical one. Cracks can be seen to emerge, if not in the edifice of science itself, atleast then at the junction of science and our human experience, where the question of mental health must unquestionable be located. The answers one gets, and thus the conclusions one draws, depend on the questions asked, and the manner of asking. One is always in the business of putting words to science, engaging thus, as one must, the dimension of the symbolic, which defines us as humans, beings of language. There is value in reading non-scientific literature, not measured with the yardstick of science, but properly misunderstood on its own terms. After Freud, read some Lacan, see the graphs and schemas, and note specifically the conclusion that psychoanalysis is not a science.

The Psychopathy of Everyday Life: How Antisocial Personality Disorder Affects All of Us
ASIN: 0306453460 |
Book Description
This bold work proposes a completely new discipline, `the psychology of malefaction', the frank study of evil human behavior that does not explain an act of murder, for example, as simply a symptom of the murderer's psychosis. Rieber re-examines such phenomena as family violence, serial killers, modern war, and media violence in the light of regarding them as wicked, not merely insane. The author re-thinks the nagging problem of evil as it manifests itself in our society, questioning to what degree persons ought to be responsible for - and held accountable for - their actions.

Legal Look at Psychopathology.......2000-04-04
The study of psychopaths has received focussed attention the last 10 years because so many have achieved responsible positions in society, then feel free to act above the law. Instead of giving a psychological rundown, Rieber looks through the legal lens at the behavior of psychopaths, and puts forward reasonable causes of social distress that leads to social dysfunction and psychopathy. To illustrate his points he ranges through recent history, news items, movies, literature, making this book available to a wider audience than a textbook might be. Unfortunately it's published by a textbook publisher which has raised the price outside the usual range, but if you're rich enough, it's worth it.
Book Description
Is there a mild psychopath near you? Or in you? If so, what can and should you do? Find out in this riveting exploration of a personality disorder usually dismissed by the mental health profession, and never before the topic of in-depth scholarly exploration. It is comparatively easy to recognize the true, full-blown psychopaths-the Hitlers, Stalins and Gacys. But what professionals and lay people alike often do not recognize is that we are surrounded by mild psychopaths, people who do not reach the level of their infamous counterparts, yet still share some of their traits. Fifteen-time author Martin Kantor, a psychiatrist whose last work, Understanding Paranoia, also zeroed in on everyday problems, explains how to recognize, understand and cope with the mild psychopaths one encounters every day. Who are these everyday psychopaths? They are politicians who lie to get votes, swindlers who phish the Internet to steal identities, salesmen who push cars or other products they know are lemons, businessmen who dupe the public in ways that barely skirt the law, doctors who perform unnecessary surgery because they need the money. The list goes on. Some would argue that each of us must use some of the means of the mild psychopath to be successful in life. Where is the line, and what do you do when those around you cross it? The Psychopathy of Everyday Life helps you decide. Kantor spotlights and disproves widely-held beliefs about mild psychopathy, then shows us methods to deal with such people, and such traits in ourselves. His conclusions and vignettes drawn from the treatment room and from everyday life, for example, show that psychopathy is a widespread problem, not one confined to low life' people in jails, or to men and women in mental hospitals. Psychopaths are not all failures in life who could be labled either bad' or mad;' many are quite successful and held up as models. And they are not all guilt-free with no conscience; some do want to escape their aggressive and socially harmful world where being honest, forthright and ethical is abnormal. Kantor offers an eclectic approach based on classic therapies to facilitate help and self-help methods for the victim and the psychopath.
Customer Reviews:
A fantastic find, 5 stars!.......2007-02-27
In this thoroughly researched and beautifully written book Kantor helps the professional and layperson alike identify psychopathy, with an emphasis on spotting its milder forms, goes into its multiple causes ranging from the psychological (psychoanalytic, interpersonal, cognitive-behavioral and social) to the genetic-organic, and suggests ways for professionals to treat mild psychopaths and for laypersons to cope with them. As the blurb above clearly notes Kantor makes a central and surprisingly original point: that while many psychopaths are essentially guilt free due to a deficiency of conscience, not all are completely so, for the mildest ones do want to escape this inner demon and emerge into the world of altruism and empathy for their fellow men. Highly recommended, and also highly enjoyable.

A book you won't soon forget--incredible!.......2006-08-14
This latest scholarly work of Dr. Martin Kantor reads like a best-seller. It drew me in from the first page and I could not put it down! Finally I had explanations for some of the callous, hard hearted behaviors that I often see in people around me. Rich with real life examples and plenty of Dr. Kantor's characteristically brilliant insight and wit, The Psychopathy of Everyday life is a book that everyone could benefit from reading. Whether you are looking for deeper insight into the gray area of mild psychopathy to effectively treat your patients or are a lay person trying to understand hurtful behaviors of the people around you or if others have identified some behaviors about you and you want to dig deeper, this book will not only enlighten you but also give you solutions, including extensive descriptions of the various individual and group therapies that work for the mild psychopath. Kantor doesn't forget the everyday victims of psychopaths either. Perhaps my favorite chapter of all is the final chapter, "Coping with Psychopaths of Everyday Life." Here the good doctor gives a six-step method that helps us to protect ourselves from the wrath of everyday psychopathic behaviors, by identifying our personal vulnerabilities and learning to stop enabling the psychopaths of our lives. This book is a must read. Give it as a give to your therapist, to a friend who too often lets other people upset her, or to a person who could use a hint about some of his or her own behaviors. This book contains a wealth of information and makes a great addition to anyone's library. Highly recommended. Raeleen D'Agostino, Ph.D.
Book Description
The most trivial slips of the tongue or pen, Freud believed, can reveal our secret ambitions, worries, and fantasies. The Psychopathology of Everyday Life ranks among his most enjoyable works. Starting with the story of how he once forgot the name of an Italian painter-and how a young acquaintance mangled a quotation from Virgil through fears that his girlfriend might be pregnant-it brings together a treasure trove of muddled memories, inadvertent actions, and verbal tangles. Amusing, moving, and deeply revealing of the repressed, hypocritical Viennese society of his day, Freud's dazzling interpretations provide the perfect introduction to psychoanalytic thinking in action.

This book which passed through four editions in Germany and is considered the author's most popular work. With great ingenuity and penetration the author throws much light on the complex problems of human behavior, and clearly demonstrates that the hitherto considered impassable gap between normal and abnormal mental states is more apparent than real. Please Note: This book has been reformatted to be easy to read in true text, not scanned images that can sometimes be difficult to decipher. Intriguing, Logical, and Plausible (!).......2007-07-29
This is a fantastic, captivating book. The theories and ideas outlined in "Psychopathology of Everyday Life" are logical and seem more applicable, plausible, and realistic (i.e. more easily seen in everyday life) than some of Freud's other theories. Highly recommended for anyone interested in psychology, character, human behavior, or Freud's work. Covers a lot about human memory. A very good resource to have.
Intricate book.......2007-01-04
It is an intricate book for those readers who love Psychology and want to discover more. The content is difficult to comprehend because Freud used a terminology that is easy to grasp by psychologists/psychiatrists. You will need another source (dictionary, person in the domain of Psych)to help you understand what he is talking about. However,I loved "The Psychopathology of Everyday Life" and I recommend to all to buy it. As I mentioned, it is an intricate book!!
Real Value.......2006-10-21
The huge amount of evidence and research over the past 50 years is enough to convince even Freud's most loyal votaries that his "science" amounted to little more than--wish fulfillment!
But--so what? Does anyone read Freud for science anymore? I hope not. But does that make him not worth reading? Of course not!
The Freudian system of the unconscious was used by scored of brilliant artists in the 20th century. Want to understand Faulkner? Anderson? Larsen? Dali? Picasso? Anyone? If so, then you must read two books by Mr Freud: this one and The Interpretation of Dreams (only James Strachey's translation!).
Are they good science? No one believe that anymore. But do they serve as excellent and useful metaphors for better understanding art? Yes. And I'm not even saying that art is independent of scientific truth, so that it wouldn't matter anyway (or anything like that). All I'm saying is that you cannot fully understand the literature coming out of America's best writers without reading some Freud. You could then use Freud's nonsense to call the art nonsense, or you could marvel at the meaning inhered in the metaphor as used by the author. The situation and philosophical background would of course determine the matter.
Anyhow, you can't go wrong with this one here. It's a quick read; it's full of great stories; it's full of wonderful nonsense; and it's so, so very useful for literature without being offensive. All the infantile sexuality stuff--that came later. This book is easily Freud's most innocent.
Bad science. Bad philosophy. Bad theology. Useful artistic metaphor. Necessary material. Great reading!
(Only read the Alan Tyson translation as edited by James Strachey.)
why we act in certain ways.......2006-06-04
Freud presents examples and case studies of why we forget, make verbal slips. Explanation of negative assocaiations which result in suibconscious 'forgetting' is explained. This book is written in laymen terms. Parts of the discussions are sometimes tedious and I lost interest at times.
Easy for the lay reader to understand.......2003-09-11
The republication of this authorized English edition which appeared in 1914 will enable libraries to replace aging volumes with a fresh, affordable paperwork. This remains one of Freud's most widely recognized titles, blending anecdotal accounts with his personal experience and psychological insights. His first-person, chatty tone makes it easy for the lay reader to understand his concepts of underlying psychological influences.

Book Description
In The ADDed Dimension, Kate Kelly, Peggy Ramundo, and D. Steven Ledingham offer insight -- with wise, clear eyes and well-developed senses of humor -- into every facet of the ADD experience, from issues of work, parenting, and relationships to those of organizational skills and stress. ADDers know enough about the "disadvantages" of ADD, and this is much more than just a guide to solving problems. At its heart, its aim is self-realization, the feeling of standing, feet firmly planted, on the common ground all ADDers walk. Along the way, it celebrates the good news about ADD: the fact that "different" doesn't mean "worse," and more often might mean "better," especially when energy, creativity, and humor are concerned.
What to do after you or your loved one has come to terms with ADD, but need help at times in keeping perspective, in relating the disorder to everyday life issues and experiences? Now, with The ADDed Dimension, there's a single book that can help.

Cuts the Fat in Half.......2002-11-21
I'm glad to have read the work of two of ADD's most steadfast advocaters. This book represents a very different approach to dealing with ADD problems (shall we say 'as we find our way through our daily fog?') as it is geared straight at the level of dysfunctionality- the ADDers themselves.
The sections are organised into single page 'problem & answer' format, each topic being introduced by a relevant notable quote from celebrities and well-known persons. Although I find the information useful, witty, and practical, this is not the be-all or end-all approach to solving the ADDers' multitude of problems. It does serve, however, to heighten awareness and could easily serve as the catalyst for future action.
One recommendation would be to label each of the single page topics for easy reference in the table of contents as opposed to identifying it by the quote only.
The rhetoric and theoretical 'fat' has been cut to a minimum, thank God...too many books contain 'extra' information that may not appeal to the target reader. Let me say that the matching of content is dead-on for the ADD person who buys this book. In fact, this may be the first self-help book written for Attention Deficit Disorder adults. Strange to think that merely a decade ago this disorder was not widely recognised as existing in adults.
Thanks to Kate Kelly and Peggy Ramundo for taking such giant steps in the battle to cope with ADD.
commentary by the author, D. Steven Ledingham.......1997-08-08
As one of the authors of "The ADDed Dimension" I was thrilled to be involved in this book. At last we could focus on the positive side of ADD. It was neat to be able to write about the experience of ADD and not just more information on the medical condition and treatment options.
This is a book about the real feeling and life experiences of those of us who learn differently and face the daily challenge of living with ADD.

Book Description
This book demonstrates that drama is not only a metaphor for everyday life, but also provides a means of self-examination and life enhancement. Asserting that emotional well-being depends upon an individual's capacity to manage a complex and often contradictory set of roles, the author shows how role offers a uniquely effective method for working through significant personal problems when used as an element of drama therapy. The volume combines theoretical discussions with extensive clinical illustrations, and covers issues including learning to live with role ambivalence, complexity, and contradiction.

Book Description
Deviance is a reality in all of our lives. In the author's words, it "is both an analytic sociological concept and a lived experience, both a label that is applied and an emotional reality that is sustained." This book looks at deviance as it is lived. The personal accounts give a voice to the human beings who lead unconventional lives and experience stigma as a result. These narratives allow the reader a glimpse into the lives of people who experience society's sanctions for violating its norms. The first two chapters set the stage for the reader's voyage of discovery through the account. The structure of each narrative, what the author includes and excludes, and how individual voices organize and shape the raw material of their lives offer different responses to numerous questions: How is deviance created? How are judgments of norm violations decided and by whom? What sanctions are applied? What do personal accounts tell us about how social relations work? How do people who know they are violating a norm negotiate their relations with persons who accept that norm? How do rule violators experience sanctions? How does the experience influence their way of looking at the world? What do accounts reveal about both deviance and conventionality?
