Book Description
A world-renowned child psychiatrist offers a groundbreaking new perspective on how stress and violence affect children's brains--and how they can be helped to heal
What happens when a young brain is traumatized? How does terror, abuse, or disaster affect a child's mind--and how can that mind recover?
Child psychiatrist Bruce Perry has helped children faced with unimaginable horror: genocide survivors, murder witnesses, kidnapped teenagers, and victims of family violence. In The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog, he tells their stories of trauma and transformation through the lens of science, revealing the brain's astonishing capacity for healing. Deftly combining unforgettable case histories with his own compassionate, insightful strategies for rehabilitation, Perry explains what exactly happens to the brain when a child is exposed to extreme stress-and reveals the unexpected measures that can be taken to ease a child's pain and help him grow into a healthy adult. Through the stories of children who recover-physically, mentally, and emotionally-from the most devastating circumstances, Perry shows how simple things like surroundings, affection, language, and touch can deeply impact the developing brain, for better or for worse.
In this deeply informed and moving book, Bruce Perry dramatically demonstrates that only when we understand the science of the mind can we hope to heal the spirit of even the most wounded child.

Food for thought.......2007-09-02
The book lives up to its fascinating title. Perry has worked for years with traumatized and neglected children and his take on dealing with them is based on research showing how the brain develops and the impact of neglect and abuse on it. In other words, if a child is abused or neglected in the first year of life (approximately), physical changes take place in the brain or rather, neurological connections that should be made, are not. (This is a vast simplification.) So as a child gets older and begins exhibiting antisocial behaviors that land him or her in special classes or even mental hospitals, it is not because he or she prefers to act this way but because the child's brain is unable to function in a way that enables him or her to become socialized. Perry, having done a great deal of research on this subject himself, spits in the eye of a lot of "accepted" practices when it comes to children's mental health. I'm always interested to read views that oppose the generally accepted norms. My daughter loaned me this book which she is reading as part of her Ph.D. program in pre- and postnatal psychology. It certainly fits right in with her assertion that we need to pay much more attention to what is happening in the first year of life (and before), not only because the child's personality is being formed, but because his brain is as well (and perhaps this is the same thing). The stories in this book are heart wrenching, but Perry does show that there are ways to help or at the very least, understand.
Refreshing new ideas .......2007-07-24
As a counseling student focusing on child therapy, I was very glad I stumbled across this book in the local library. Perry explores the role of brain structure in childhood disorders. While he focuses primarily on trauma (such as how PTSD in children mimics ODD and ADHD), I believe that other applications can be made. This is novel to hear in a world of tired exclusive arguments pro or con genetics, brain chemistry, and environment. Perry combines a few of these ideas to give the mental health worker a more comprehensive look at mental illness and trauma. The case stories are heartbreaking and compelling. A worthwhile read if you are going into the mental health (or even teaching) field, and interesting even if you are not.
I feel blessed to have found this book. .......2007-07-11
My husband and I are about to adopt our first child. We are adopting through DHS. All children who are adopted through DHS have been through trauma. We have been taking classes when our teacher recommended this book. I went out and bought it and read it and it was so insightful to what we may be dealing with. I feel so blessed to have this information about the brain and how children may act out in times they feel out of control. I truly believe that EVERY foster/adoptive parent should read this book. It was amazing and I will probably read it again. I can't stop talking about it. I am just blown away and very thankful for this book.
Everyone should read this book!.......2007-07-05
I couldn't put this book down. I learned so much that I can apply to myself as well as my kids. I have two adopted children who came from severe early childhood neglect and abuse, so this book is invaluable to me. The only problem is that it has left me thirsty for more from Dr. Perry!
Truly remarkable.......2007-06-27
The stories in this book are heart-wrenching, but to people who've dealt with traumatized children the scenarios and the aftermath are familiar. What is truly remarkable about Dr. Perry's work is that he uses each case he describes as an opportunity to explain how the developing brain is affected by trauma and how healing can be informed by this knowledge. Unlike many other books in this genre, this is no "great therapist cures poor abused children" book. Dr. Perry is modest about his own contributions, and rightly emphasizes the role that parents, extended family, and community must play in helping to heal traumatized kids as well is preventing trauma from occurring in the first place.
As the parent of a child with PTSD, I've read extensively on the subject. I'd really have liked it if Dr. Perry could have included a recipe for cure in the book, but of course that's just my wishful thinking, not a realistic hope. What he does give for parents who are looking for help is guidelines and guidance for finding the right kind of help, not just from therapy but from the larger world. What I learned from this book will definitely contribute to my ongoing work to help my daughter find her way out of the nightmare that her past put her in.

What a wonderful book.......2007-06-07
I can't express how wonderful this book was. I may not be Greek by birth, but I am in my heart. While I go to Greece yearly, I long to be there year-round. This book has helped me connect to my favorite place when I have to be in the States. It is great to read some of the other women's experiences and see how they parallel my own. I highly recommend this book to any woman who loves Greece.

Book Description
'the greatest short story writer who has ever lived' Raymond Carver's unequivocal verdict on Chekhov's genius has been echoed many times by writers as diverse as Katherine Mansfield, Somerset Maugham, John Cheever and Tobias Wolf. While his popularity as a playwright has sometimes overshadowed his achievements in prose, the importance of Chekhov's stories is now recognized by readers as well as by fellow authors. Their themes - alienation, the absurdity and tragedy of human existence - have as much relevance today as when they were written, and these superb new translations capture their modernist spirit. Elusive and subtle, spare and unadorned, the stories in this selection are among Chekhov's most poignant and lyrical. They include well-known pieces such as 'The Lady with the Little Dog', as well as less familiar work like 'Gusev', inspired by Chekhov's travels in the Far East, and 'Rothschild's Violin', a haunting and darkly humorous tale about death and loss.

the translation.......2005-11-09
A well-picked, well-translated, small collections of stories with a sweet introduction (the same translator also wrote a biography of chekhov). She tackled C's long and bold sentences with her own, and has an interesting idea about the "musicality" of C's writing... So warm the samovar, let the serfs off early, and go nuts with this one.

entering into the world of one with Alzheimer's.......2002-12-28
One of the many values of this book is that it provides an opportunity to enter into the experiences, feelings, and perceptions of persons with Alzheimer's on a deeply human level. This is a book grounded in respect and value for the person with dementia. It is also an affirmation of the gifts of love, compassion, and wisdom to be found in relationship with the family member or friend with dementia.
BEST ON THE TOPIC.......2002-12-25
I lost my mother to Alzeimer's! Of all the books I searched for comfort and strength, this was by far the best! A wonderful and varied collection!
A touching set of true stories.......2002-12-21
This excellent little book of stories (in its 2nd edition) is well worth reading.
They are first-hand accounts, written by family members and/or friends, of loved ones who have slowly found themselves forgetting, and/or becoming confused. Some of the tales are hilarious, others very moving.
All the essays and stories are well-written, and the editing is superb.
Priceless Too.......2002-12-08
This is a heartfelt collection of true stories by family members and caregivers of people with Alzheimer's. Anyone with a loved one touched by this disease will feel much less alone after reading this book.
Beautifully written, warm-hearted stories.......2002-12-07
This is a collection of stories by people whose lives have been touched by Alzheimer's Disease. Loving, touching, humerous, moving; an indepth look at the human spirit. Primarily short-stories, some poetry - all very healing. A must read for anyone experiencing the effects of Alzheimer's Disease, especially caregivers.

This is a collection of life-affirming stories about couples who met and fell in love. So you know the endings already. Or do you? There is nothing predictable here. The storytelling is inspired, at once poetic and real. The style is deceptively simple and the themes are international. Love is old and young. Love breaks through borders.
This jewel of a book will make you cry for joy and yearn for more.

What a good idea all these Chicken Soup for the Soul books are! Instead of reading one book and hunting around for the most touching or uplifting passage, the Soup brigade of editors and writers scours the published world for brief excerpts, arranges them by category, and sells them by the kabillion.
The spoon-size stories in Chicken Soup for the Couple's Soul hit the spot and warm the heart. Take the case of Dame Margot Fonteyn, the legendary dancer. She fell madly for Latin lover Roberto Arias at 18 in 1937, but history flung them apart. He recourted her 14 years later, after he'd become Panama's ambassador to the UN. Five assassin's bullets crippled him, but not their romance: he watched from the wings in a stretcher as she took 43 curtain calls in Romeo and Juliet. "I feel it's rather a fair division," she said of their love. "He thinks. I move. You see, I love him." Another love-triumphing-over-paralysis chapter reprints the most stunning passage of Christopher Reeve's Still Me.
The cartoons aren't great, but many of the celebrity quotes in the book are, like this one from Ursula K. Le Guin: "Love doesn't just sit there, like a stone, it has to be made, like bread, remade all the time, made new." But one correction: the line "There is only one serious question ... how to make love stay" is from Tom Robbins, not "Tim Robbins." --Tim Appelo
Book Description

Warm and Lovely Book.......2006-11-30
This book was so good, I almost read it all in a day. I love true love stories. My two favorite stories were the ones about the apples and about the pay phone. It was really nice to read all these love stories.
Not What I was Hoping For.......2006-11-05
My wife and I had a cross country trip planned (driving from Virginia back to Utah) and we wanted to get some stuff to listen to that would be inspiring and help bolster our marriage of 18 years. We haven't had much alone time with four kids. Well, this one sounded good so we bought it. The stories are okay, but most of them seemed to deal with death and losing a loved one. Didn't do us much good at all.
Heartwarming........2006-08-02
The Chicken Soup series of books have certainly left an indelible mark on society and CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE COUPLE'S SOUL is no exception. There is a lot to like about all of these books. Usually presented in 2 - 3 page vignettes that make for easy reading and a variety of plots reach varied interests.
This particular volume tells of adventures of finding the love of a life. There are chapters here on finding each other, intimacy, commitment and much more. This is a treasure couples should enjoy together.
Just what I needed.......2006-06-10
I'm a huge fan of the chicken soup series, and this book did not disappoint me.
For a married woman who was in a bit of a rut, it reminded me of just what it means to be in love with someone.
Almost all the stories touched my heart and I even had the courage to share some of them with my husband. It's nice to sit down and read about couples who have had ups and downs and have still managed to survive it all. If you are 1/2 of a couple then I would suggest this book in a heartbeat.
OK, but displeased with customer service.......2005-10-12
I thought I was getting a like-new book, but the dust jacket is worn more than I would expect. I asked the seller for a small compensation due to their misrepresentation, but I never heard back from them.
Be careful with this seller.

Book Review of
A Couple of Kooks and Other Love Stories
&
The Eagle
The Book A Couple of Kooks and Other Love Stories is by Cynthia Rylant.
This book is about different people who all fell in love in the strangest ways. The first story was about a boy who was mentally challenged and he fell in love with a store clerk, who worked in a store across the street from where he ate. He never saw the lady before only her long dark hair. The boy always had a thing for flowers since his mother had died. So he planted the flower seeds that were in a box his mother had left and began to send flowers to the store clerk across the street. She didn¡¦t know who sent her the flowers or anything. People who saw the flowers in the window thought somebody had died since the flowers kept coming in, and piling into the window. Nobody thought that the store clerk would ever get a secret admirer because of her tom boyish ways.
What made me want to read this book were the illustrations on the cover it seemed like a fairy tallish sort of book. The title seemed to be comical since it had the word Kooks in it. I wanted to read this book because my teacher requested it for me and I had a book review to do.
I think this book would be great for awkward lovers and people who like to read love stories. It would probably be great for young adult, more say girls.
I think the very first story is the best part of the book which is the one I described above which is entitled ± Crush. The way the unfamiliar characters came familiar with each other through odd behaviors.
The events that made up the story were how the boy was very special. He wasn¡¦t even able to communicate with people until he was 12 years old, and the lady that worked at the hardware store across the street wasn¡¦t at all lady like. It didn¡¦t add u together but it worked out in the end.
The boy in the story was described very thoroughly. The author told his life so precise that you were able to suspect that something was wrong with him. I like the way the author describes the store clerk as well because you would never have guessed that someone would have a crush on her.
The settings in the story painted a picture in your mind because of how well they were described. The way the author described the setting of the day it made me feel as if I was there.
The theme was sarcastic and hearty warming at the same time. You can identify how the person felt because of the way Cynthia Rylant described the characters voice volumes and the way they said their phrases.
The story was told by a narrator. The style was romance and humorous. It was fantasy. The author¡¦s message was probably, you can find love in the most unusual places.
There really wasn¡¦t any weakness to Ms. Cynthia Rylant¡¦s story. I liked the book very much, because of its style and level of understanding the way things were being told. I would really recommend this book to young adults and teens.

Couple of Kooks: and Other Stories about Love.......2002-09-18
THIS BOOK IS GREAT!!! I have always enjoyed reading Cynthia Rylant books because she is a very compelling and expressive writer. I was surprised to find the story "A Crush" inside my 7th grade class's reading book. My exact thoughts were oh joy another story that I will like and the students won't but I was proved wrong. The first words I heard after I completed reading the story out loud was "What happens? Why didn't you finish?" My students enjoyment of the story has led me to purchase the book and use it as my read aloud book for the next book.
Rylant is hardly a kook.......2001-12-23
Worth the purchase if only for her wonderful story "A Crush," a low-key story about a mentally challenged individual whose withdrawal from his self-imposed shell managed to make at least three other people very happy. Rylant has a remarkable way of writing fiction as though reporting an on-the-spot event, with the result that her crisp lack of easy bathos is in itself enough to make the reader wallow in tears. A very worthwhile reading.
An Ok Book.......1999-12-07
This was an ok book, but I would rather read one longer love story than a collection. They were easy to read and some were quite enjoyable. If you want to read a book that goes straight to your heart, read Stolen Moments by Barbara Jeanne Fisher. . .It is a beautiful story of unrequited love. . .for certain the love story of the nineties. I intended to give the book a quick read, but I got so caught up in the story that I couldn't put the book down. From the very beginning, I was fully caught up in the heart-wrenching account of Julie Hunter's battle with lupus and her growing love for Don Lipton. This love, in the face of Julie's impending death, makes for a story that covers the range of human emotions. The touches of humor are great, too, they add some nice contrast and lighten things a bit when emotions are running high. I've never read a book more deserving of being published. It has rare depth. Julie's story will remind your readers that life and love are precious and not to be taken for granted. It has had an impact on me, and for that I'm grateful. Stolen Moments is written with so much sensitivity that it made me want to cry. It is a spellbinder. What terrific writing. Barbara does have an exceptional gift! This book was edited by Lupus specialist Dr. Matt Morrow too, and has the latest information on that disease. ..A perfect gift for someone who started college late in life, fell in love too late in life, is living with any illness, or trying to understand a loved one who is. . .A gift to be cherished forever.
