Unhappiness in marriage often has a simple root cause: we speak different love languages, believes Dr. Gary Chapman. While working as a marriage counselor for more than 30 years, he identified five love languages: Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch. In a friendly, often humorous style, he unpacks each one. Some husbands or wives may crave focused attention; another needs regular praise. Gifts are highly important to one spouse, while another sees fixing a leaky faucet, ironing a shirt, or cooking a meal as filling their "love tank." Some partners might find physical touch makes them feel valued: holding hands, giving back rubs, and sexual contact. Chapman illustrates each love language with real-life examples from his counseling practice.

How do you discover your spouse's - and your own - love language? Chapman's short questionnaires are one of several ways to find out. Throughout the book, he also includes application questions that can be answered more extensively in the beautifully detailed companion leather journal (an exclusive Amazon.com set). Each section of the journal corresponds with a chapter from the book, offering opportunities for deeper reflection on your marriage.

Although some readers may find choosing to love a spouse that they no longer even like -hoping the feelings of affection will follow later- a difficult concept to swallow, Chapman promises that the results will be worth the effort. "Love is a choice," says Chapman. "And either partner can start the process today." --Cindy Crosby. This text refers to the Amazon.com Exclusive Journal & Paperback Book Set.

This is a great book. It helped me look at the way I treated my husband and my children. I can now more fully express my love to my family in ways that they understand. I bought a copy for my mom and sisters.

4 out of 5 stars Good Suggestions.......2007-10-09

I got this book in hopes of finding ways my hubby and I can connect. He read this book really fast and I'm still reading a couple of chapters at a time. Although the suggestions are good and we are using them to mend some issues in our relationship; it wasn't something that I just couldn't put down like hubby. For overall content I give kudos.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful for all couples.......2007-09-27

This book was recommended to me by a colleague. It is actually used in premarriage counseling as well as couples therapy. I wish I'd read this earlier! A definite must have for understanding the two sides of relationships. I usually purchase a copy as a gift for close friends at bridal showers, etc. It is an easy read, and very helpful for old and new couples alike.

4 out of 5 stars Good But With Religious Content.......2007-09-26

I found the book worthwhile to listen to. The author offered good practical advice to improving your relationship. I was disappointed that the last 1/5th of the program concentrated on the writings of Jesus. I do not believe that believing in a certain religion will help my relationship.

Book Description

Distinguished novelist and critic Francine Prose inspires readers and writers alike with this inside look at how the professionals read...and write.

Long before there were creative writing workshops and degrees, how did aspiring writers learn to write? By reading the work of their predecessors and contemporaries, says Francine Prose. In READING LIKE A WRITER, Prose invites you to sit by her side and take a guided tour of the tools and the tricks of the masters. She reads the work of the very best writers–Dostoyevsky, Flaubert, Kafka, Austen, Dickens, Woolf, Chekhov–and discovers why these writers endure. She takes pleasure in the long and magnificent sentences of Philip Roth and the breath–taking paragraphs of Isaac Babel; she is deeply moved by the brilliant characterization in George Eliot's MIDDLEMARCH. She looks to John Le Carré for a lesson in how to advance plot through dialogue, to Flannery O'Connor for the cunning use of the telling detail, and to James Joyce and Katherine Mansfield who offer clever examples of how to employ gesture to create character. She cautions readers to slow down and pay attention to words, the raw material out of which literature is crafted. Written with passion, humor, and wisdom, READING LIKE A WRITER will inspire readers to return to literature with a fresh eye and an eager heart.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended to Readers and Writers.......2007-10-08

I strongly recommend this book.

As a writer of creative fiction who dreams of being published, a familiar knot formed in my stomach when I read the opening sentence of Francine Prose's Reading Like a Writer. "CAN CREATIVE WRITING BE TAUGHT?" Just like that, in all caps, this question which opens the book will surely taunt the angst of aspiring authors and leave them, like me, holding their breath, waiting for the answer.

Whether you are one of those who love books or one who wants to write the books that become beloved, I strongly recommend this book. Although I am not going to reveal Ms. Prose's answer (only because I think you should read the book yourself!), I will say that this book rejuvenated my excitement for reading and was further inspiration for my writing.

In this book, it is as if Francine Prose is your own personal literature professor, standing at the front of the classroom of your mind and giving you permission, encouraging you even, to immerse yourself in the pleasure of books. For this reader, such "permission" was a breathe of fresh air (you mean reading is supposed to be enjoyed?) and the guidance Francine Prose offers rubs away detritus accumulated from college lit courses that were conducted more in the spirit of an anatomy lab and reading groups/mainstream media that peddle the notion (which many of us buy) that she who reads the most, the fastest, earns the Superior IQ medal of honor. By the time I finished the book, I was nearly salivating at the thought of alternately devouring and savoring the books Ms. Prose recommends at the end...just - for - the - fun - of - it!

As for the book being helpful for writers, I can only speak for myself and am somewhat reticent because, as the saying goes, "the proof is in the pudding." That being said, Ms. Prose does a superb job of navigating the area between prescribing formulaic dogma for creative writing (of course that's an oxymoron, but that doesn't stop many others from teaching it anyway!) and revealing such delicious insights into the art and practice of writing that I have most of the book dog-eared and underlined, awaiting my return. And I will, again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Yum, yum, yum.......2007-09-04

One of the functions of a critic is to slow us down.
Readers flipping the pages of a Derek Armstrong or
TK Kenyon novel may be propelled by the plot to read
quickly: chew it all up and swallow and move on.

The aptly named Francine Prose invites us to take a breath.
By focusing our attention on some wonderfully wrought writing,
she encourages us to see how that stuff is built, to go behind
the curtain and watch the wiz at work.

Some of the examples that she explores may seem odd to
one reader or another, but I found her discussion of one
passage that I didn't admire to be as stimulating as
the rest.

Reading Like a Writer was recommended to me by Martin
Donoff of Fairleigh Dickenson's MFA program in writing.
It's used as a text in that program.

For the writer, this is a reminder that the best writers
read and that what they read is the best writers. This
book is an inspiring tour that will lead the reader to
a higher level of pleasure and the writer to a new level
of the craft. Read this in small doses and let it stay
with you.

(Incidentally, the author photo is pretty hot too.)

4 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting, but still worth your time.......2007-08-21

More of a book about "reading quotes by great authors and reading rather lavish commentary by this book's author", but I really can't complain about that. Good introduction to what to look for in a book as a reader or a writer - discusses everything from narration to use of gesture. If you enjoy writing, you should read this book.

1 out of 5 stars So disappointing! here's why..........2007-08-19

What a let-down this book turned out to be. The title of the book is inappropriate. It is a decent book for people who love to read, but not for those who want to write. When Prose gave the example of a Flannery O'Connor story and discussed for one page why using the word "grandmother" instead of a few other alternatives was best, I knew I was in trouble. Did Flannery O'Connor really sit and think about this? Perhaps. But probably not. Some of the best writing happens when a writer analyzes least. There is such a thing as over-analyzing a creative work. In fact, it's probably the number one reason why people who set out to write, quit. Not because they can't write well, but because they think it has to be torture. Also, for any of you writers out there who write for children - this book, imho, is worthless. In the first chapter, Prose briefly points to what she read as a child and then goes on to state that as she grew older she read books that were "more challenging, better written..." As a children's writer, I find the presumption that fiction for adults is "better written" than children's lit. full of old-school pretension. How to compare a classic like C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia or E. Nesbit's classics with a Hemingway novel? Finally, if you have studied Literature in college, you may very well find this book just more of the same.

4 out of 5 stars Enchanting guide.......2007-08-10

I thought this book would be stuffy, but I really enjoyed it. After a slightly dull beginning, Francine Prose dives in and shares with us all these books I've never heard of: The Marquise of O by Heinrich von Kleist, Pedro Paramo by Juan Rulfo, A Ship Made of Paper by Scott Spencer, and others.

She also analyzes various aspects of writing, such as plot, character, dialogue, and gesture, and provides examples from Chekhov of how every rule can be broken.

Thus, the book functions in two ways: as an insightful writing guide and a really great recommendation source.

2 out of 5 stars To each their own..........2007-10-01

I picked this book up for free at an orchard, they have a great book give away system. I had heard of this before but never read it. It was okay, but I'm sure I'll never read it again. The story is about 3 sisters and their mom on a ranch is Mexico. The older sister marries the younger one's love, and the story takes off. The problem is, I didn't connect with any of these characters. They story would have grim reality, then fantasy in the next paragraph. I can undrestand why some people would enjoy this, but it's not my thing. I think this is one of those books that you'll love or hate. If you love this book, you'll be shaking your head and wondering what's wrong with me that I didn't like it. If you didn't care for it, you'll understand what I'm saying. Whatever, to each their own.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious!.......2007-08-04

The story of Elena De la Garza, the youngest daughter of Tita, is told by Tita's granddaughter. Cultural tradition is that as the youngest daughter, Tita must remain with her mother, unmarried, to care for her until she dies.
Tita's sister Gertrudis marries Tita's love Pedro. Rosaura has love fire and goes off to the Revolution to couple with a general in the army and becomes an officer of the army herself. This book is fantasy, magic, emotion, reality of love, told in chapters headed by ancient Mexican recipes handed down for generations. Ingeniously constructed, with a beautiful voice, this book is a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book - one of my favorites!.......2007-07-20

Laura Esquival's story is about love and passion intertwined with food and family. Each chapter begins with a delicious recipe that connects to the story about Tita, the heroine of the book.

You fall in love with the characters, laugh and smile when good things happen, and cry when unfortunate events tear at their hearts. It's a page turner that fires up the imagination. It will make you hungry and want to fall in love at the same time.

This is one of my favorite books. I read it at least once a year.

4 out of 5 stars Like water for chocolate .......2007-06-13

This book is a story is about a young girl that is in love with this young man. When he wants to go ask her hand in marriage Mama Elena says "No." The reason that she says no is because of a stupid tradition. That says that the youngest girl in the De la Garza family can not get married. They have to take care of there mother till she dies.

So when the young man finds out he thinks that the closes why he can get to Tita is by marring her sister. So he does. When Tita finds out she is heart broken. Not only did she just lose the man that she loved; now she had to live seeing him with her sister. What really hurt her most was that she had to make the wedding cake. When she was making some of her tears got into the ingredients and that mad the cake go bad. While her sister was eating it she felt sick and throw-up all over her white dress. Rosaura said that Tita was trying to ruin her wedding night by making her sick.

I really like the way that the author describes everything so good. Like when Tita was making dinner, how she was cutting the chilies, and the sound that the meat made when it touched the hot pan. I also liked the setting that the author had. Some thing that I would change would be the ending. But I had to read it two times to get it. But this is a really good book so you should read it if you like soap-opera romance, and fairy- tale.

5 out of 5 stars magical mystical ride..........2007-05-30

Like Water for Chocolate is a wonderful, magical even mystical ride. A lyrical tale of food, love, romance and heartbreak. Highly recommended.
Laura Esquivel writes a beautiful story that will stay with you for years.

5 out of 5 stars For everybody.......2007-08-30

I think there are very few books out there that literally anyone could benefit from. Singles, couples, kids, anybody. I recommend this book a lot, if nothing else just for the sheer value of people becoming more aware of their relationships.
I know my parents marriage was in part saved by this book and some of the deeper understanding it brought them.
If it were up to me, there would be a copy on every book shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Simple and sophiscated at same time.......2007-08-21

Over the years I have counseled many people purchased many, many excellent relationship books, despite the slight Religious References this book is among the top ten, no the top 3 under essential reading. Here advice seems simple untill you start practicing, it takes a bit of work, but the results are excellent! I intend to buy more copies of this and her book for couples on The Five love Languages, to give away. Her advice is excellent for anyone who wants to get along better with someone in their life, family, friends, business associates well as Significent Others.

2 out of 5 stars Another relationship book skimming the surface.......2007-08-01

I liked this book a lot, but it's yet another one that gives the impression that you can fix relationships by simply applying rules that you learn. It doesn't really get into the driving forces of what gets people into the relationship situations that they find themselves in before they start reading it - and these are always subconscious drivers that need to be understood and learned patterns and responses changed. Otherwise, all you do is try to apply things that are foreign to you, and in the long run that cannot work and isn't realistic. Try Fit for Love: Find Your Self and Your Perfect Mate, and then read this. I found that the two in tandem work well, but you need both.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for those in any kind of life situation.......2007-07-10

It really gives you a deeper understanding to things I would've never even thought about as far as relationships and communicating with others.
The concepts are relateable to real life experiences, in almost any situation whether family work friends or significant others are involved.
I'm only 24, but I am glad I read this book now as it has given me a lot of valuable insight into how to express love "languages" to others. A must-read for all you out there that want to communicate and understand your loved ones better.

5 out of 5 stars Very insightful! (warning: religious, but doesn't evangelize).......2007-06-25

I had the original book on my wish list for some time, and then I found out about this book. Later, I saw a friend of mine from church who had a copy, and she said it was wonderful. So I immediately ordered my own copy.

I was not disappointed.

Seeing these insights led me to realize why it was that I preferred certain activities and certain behaviors in a relationship, and it leads me to explore what another could want from me. And since this is directed towards single adults, this seemed more applicable to my situation than the original.

Now, a warning to the non-religious. Yes, this book quotes the Bible frequently. But instead of doing so with the intention of disguising a religious tract as a self-help book, the author does a masterful job of quoting scripture while staying marvelously on point, and he maintains the focus implicitly promised in the title-helping you improve your relations with others.

If you are a single adult, read this book. Don't let the religious sprinklings turn you off. This book is valuable even if you ignore them.

3 out of 5 stars Review of the Five Love Languages of Teenagers.......2007-01-09

I felt really stupid after I bought this book because it isn't for teens; it is for adults who have teenagers and how to love them. My mother read some and enjoyed, but since I am not a parent I didn't read all of it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Parents of Teens & Pre-teens.......2006-08-13

Great hands-on advice for learning how to love your pre-teen and teenager. I wish now that I had this book when my first daughter was a teen.

3 out of 5 stars What Kind of Love Talk Are We Talking About?.......2007-06-14

This book includes some very helpful grids for helping spouses ( or friends - or enemies!) to understand each other. It would have rated higher with me if it had emphasized more the attitude of a servant spirit to which God calls His people, and the distinctive commands to the wife and the husband. The Excellent Wife: A Biblical Perspective

3 out of 5 stars Love Talk Book.......2006-12-22

I bought this book in hopes to find more knowledge about how to communicate better, however I soon discovered that the book coincides with a workbook. Every chapter describes scenarios/experiences that the authors went through but is followed by "please see the workbook" to find out on how to communicate better. So buy the workbook if you want to get the full use of this book as well as reap the benefits in your relationship.

On the upside the book does have some good examples of what types of communication styles there are. I hoped this is helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide to Enriching Communication.......2005-10-15

I am still working through the book but it has been an excellent guide to improving communication skills at all levels.

5 out of 5 stars Deep Wisdom Practically Explained and Applied.......2005-07-17

"Love Talk" is a very practical book that is also very deep. What a rare combination. Far too often we find deep books that are vague and impractical or how-to manuals that are shallow and unbiblical. "Love Talk," as the authors accurately label it, is "a deep yet simple plan full of new insights that will revolutionize communication in love relationships."

Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott help couples to go deep by identifying their fear factor (a catchy and helpful phrase)--a soul issue necessary to expose for soul talk by soul mates. They then help couples to go simple (but not simplistically so) by helping husbands and wives to determine their communication styles.

They also help couples to go deep by exposing the deep mystery of the male-female relationship, doing so in a way that honors the complex nature of masculinity and femininity. They then also go simple by sharing a "doable" plan for moving husband-wife communication from good to great (another catchy and encouraging phrase).

"Love Talk" offers many deep/simple tools such as the Love Talk Inidicator, the Secret to Emotional Connection, and a short course on Communication 101. Two companion his and her workbooks provide exercises and self-test to help couples apply the content and concepts contained in "Love Talk."

Reviewer: Dr. Robert W. Kellemen is the author of "Soul Physicians," "Spiritual Friends," and "Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction."

5 out of 5 stars College student.......2005-07-01

I got this book because it was required for a class taught by Les & Leslie Parrott at Seattle Pacific University. The class and book are awesome! I'm not married, but I still learned a lot of practical tips for communicating with my future wife (hopefully) and even my friends and family!

They truly taught me a lot about the importance of communication & understanding each other...then you'll reach Love Talk!

Among the themes explored are the Toltec wisdom of the heart and the war of control.

I enjoyed all the books put out by Don Miguel Ruiz, but this one was truly awesome. I've learned a lot about myself and the love God has for each and everyone of us. I've read this book three times and probably will read it again and again. I enjoyed his wisdom and insight.

Wish I had read this book when I was 15 years old. Even now it has been a blessing in my life! It is never too late to realize how special you are and to value the differences in each one of us. This book taught me so much about self value, self love, self esteem and consequently empowered me to create my own happiness and enjoy "la pura vida". I shared this blessing with my whole family by giving them a copy of this enlightening book.

Book Description

Communication between couples has been dissected in thousands of books and articles, so why does it remain the number one marriage problem? "Because," says Dr. Emerson Eggerichs, "most spouses don't know that they speak two different languages. They are sending each other messages in 'code,' but they won't crack that code until they see that she listens to hear the language of love and he listens to hear the language of respect." Dr. Eggerichs' best-selling book, Love and Respect, launched a revolution in how couples relate to each other based on Ephesians 5:33: "The husband must love his wife . . . and the wife must respect her husband." In Cracking the Communication Code he shows couples how to speak each other's distinctly different language-respect for him, love for her. The result is mutual understanding and a successful, godly marriage.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very good book, but a bit long-winded.......2007-06-27

I read Emerson's previous book "Love And Respect" 7 times, just because it was so good and it touched my heart deeply. The principles in his book are so profound and important that it was no surprise that Emerson decided to write a follow-up book called "Cracking the Communication Code: The Secret to Speaking Your Mate's Language". The material in this book goes into great detail about the inner workings of conflict and Emerson picks apart typical marital arguments and shows the reader exactly the dynamics that are at play.

I give this book 4 stars instead of 5 because it is rather long-winded in places and because this book comes across to me as Emerson's exhaustive exposition and commentary on the core principles and crux of the "Love And Respect" book. In other words, there isn't a lot of NEW material.

Having said that, I don't want to discourage anyone from reading this book. If you haven't read either of these two books, then I'd suggest the "Love And Respect" book first, but if you buy this one, you get a "mini-Love And Respect" recap "book-within-a-book" in the first few chapters.

Good job Emerson! I would love to attend one of your conferences when you are in my area!

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring book........2007-05-12

After reading the book, I realize that marriage is a spiritual path. Marriage is a relationship that tests me to reach a higher spiritual plane and to connect with God. I really liked Emerson's prayer of commitment. I don't normally buy Christian books and I had to "decode" a few things for myself to so I could relate to it, but after reading it, I have more appreciation for the nature of man and the nature of woman and how to respect and appreciate our differences. I also have more appreciation for the teachings of Jesus. Thank you Emerson!

5 out of 5 stars Eye Opening Reading.......2007-04-11

I've not read the entire book yet, but am anxious to do so. This, in my opinion, is a must read for every couple wanting to strengthen their marriage. Good basic "stuff" we all need to know.

2 out of 5 stars More of the same...wordy.......2007-02-22

More of the same... I would stop at Love and Respect, the first book. This book is too wordy and seems to go nowhere. No real new information. I sold it back right after I bought it, but I kept Love & Respect. Don't bother.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2007-01-06

WOW! This book is one of the best books I have ever read. The part on T-U-F-T-S is so insightful. Dr. E helped me to decipher what my spouse is really saying to me. I learned how to speak her distinct different language---"love" for her, "respect" for me---building mutual understanding, and enjoying a successful, godly marriage!!!!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Handle with care! Please!.......2007-05-27

I am dismayed by reading all of the praise for this book! Coming from the perspective of a voice teacher and professional vocalist, I am concerned at the number of people following blindly into the potentially damaging advice in the book. I have an old one from 1999, along with instruction CD's, and Love demonstrates his glottal action (which is the technical term for his "gluggs" that he tells you to do). I think I rated as low as I did simply to attempt to lower the overall rating and get people to pay attention to the potential danger.

It is true that glottle action helps to develop a more forward voice, and that is why songs with glotal emphasis can be valuable. However, to spend as much time doing these exercises as Lov recommends, can cause permanent damage. As the vocal folds are repeatedly slapped against one another, the abrasion will quickly cause fatigue and irritation within the vocal apparatus, particularily the delicate vocal folds. Over time, your skin will become calloused and you will not feel the abraision anymore, but that's only because of the long-term damage that has occurred.

Rather than this, I recommend The Vocal Coach by Chris & Carol Beaty (published by Star Song). They have a wide range of instructional tools, and a phenominal daily workout series for all voice types.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-05-17

This book is incredible. I had no idea I ever had the potential to improve my speaking voice. I do the exercises almost every night, and can see serious results in my singing voice. I'm now working on incorporating the singing voice into my every day speech (they are really one and the same), and feel much more optimistic about using the incredible instrument of my voice to get my message across to people in a much more efficient and pleasant way in the future.

Thank you, Roger Love.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2007-05-14

I am a music director at a local church resposible for teaching vocals. I can not sing, but because of the information in this book I can teach and instruct the vocalist. This book is a must if you want to teach correct breathing control and diaphramic breathing.

5 out of 5 stars The bible of pop singing.......2007-05-09

Play the included CD in your car for the next 3 months and sing along. If after those exercises you don't have good voice control, you're doing something wrong because the exercises DO put you in the proper position for maximum flow and you eventually develop a continuous, steady, vocal pressure.

I had to learn sing with a jazz band a year ago , and without this book and CD I would have been lost. There are lots of people who will give you their opinion as to the proper way to sing, but few who know the mechanics behind it.

Though the book has a bit of hype related to the name-dropping, it is nonetheless an excellent text on how to sing pop music, properly.

Would have liked some guidance on how to sing properly with microphones as I found that the next problem one faces in pop music

5 out of 5 stars Review of Set Your Voice Free.......2007-01-05
